A total of 2,470 square feet of additional gaming spaces were added, as the team renovated the previous Race & Sports Book area, and created a gaming lounge in the Palms Tower hall. Top Ten Las Vegas Values from Las Vegas Advisor

Ellis Island: The complete steak dinner at Ellis Island remains at #1 this month. The filet-cut sirloin comes with soup or salad, choice of potato, and green beans and is served 24/7 for $7.99. To get that price you have to print out two coupons from an EI kiosk, the second after playing at least $5 in any slot machine with your club card inserted. We tried it again this month and discovered a good new wrinkle that you can read about in Dining.

SkylineGreater Las VegasShrimp Cocktail24 hours$1.49The shrimp cocktail at Skyline is served 24/7 at the main bar and comes in a cocktail glass, with no filler lettuce or celery, and topped with a tangy sauce.

Klondike SunsetGreater Las Vegas$1.49 BreakfastDaily$1.49The $1.49 bacon or sausage & eggs breakfast at Klondike Sunset is served every day in Sarah’s Kitchen from 7 to 11 am.

Flamingo Las VegasStrip5¢ Draft BeerDaily5¢Amazing us by surviving for another month is the Flamingo’s 5¢ beer deal in the Margaritaville Casino area’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere bar that runs daily from 5 to 6 pm (#5). It’s a bit of a cram-fest to beat the clock in that one-hour window, then there’s the dilemma of what to toke on a 25¢ tab. But it’s the spirit of the thing that makes it a great way to start an evening out.

Harrah'sStripMac KingTues.-Sat.$14.98There was a mix-up of some sort last month and we received multiple reports that the Mac King promo tickets (#6) were no longer available. It turns out to have been a temporary glitch and we’ve confirmed in person that the $14.98 tickets (after all fees) that include a drink are still being handed out at the Total Rewards booth. Great deal on an excellent show. Just walk up and ask.

South PointOff StripHot DogDaily$1.25The $1.25 hot dogs at South Point come with onions, kraut, and relish at no additional charge and are served from a cart in the sports book from 10 am until 5 pm. It’s not only the best hot dog deal in town, but these are some of the best dogs period.

Stage Door Casino and LoungeStrip$1 Beer24 hours$1On the other side of the coin, an institution ended last month with the price of a Michelob in the bottle at Casino Royale rising 100% to $2. Not to worry, there’s another dollar-beer deal right around the corner. Pabst Blue Ribbon in the bottle is available for a buck 24/7 at the Stage Door slot house on Flamingo, just a stone’s throw from the Strip. We break down the differences for you in Entertainment.

HootersStrip$1 Blackjack24 Hours$1.20The $1-minimum blackjack game at Hooters runs 24/7 in the pit. The rules aren’t good, with naturals paying even money on bets of $1-$4, but it’s the only dollar game on or near the Strip. The $1.20 “cost” is the expected loss for one hour’s play at flat $1 bets. Also, parking at Hooters is free, which is another good reason to check out this deal

Crown & AnchorGreater Las VegasLunch CompDaily$20 buy-inLast month we listed the Crown & Anchor deal (#9) as “Steak & Lobster,” rather than “Lunch Comp.” We corrected it online, but it couldn’t be addressed in the hard copy of the newsletter. It’s correct here. Play $20 through a machine and get anything on the menu comped. Hours are 8 am-2:30 pm at the east location (Tropicana/Maryland Pkwy.) and 11 am-3 pm at the west (Spring Mtn./Decatur). If you miss lunch, the offer is extended for appetizers until 6 pm on the east and 7 pm on the west.

Binion's Gambling HallDowntownPhotosDailyFreeReturning to the list this month is the free photo with $1 million dollars at Binion’s (#10), available 9 am-11:30 pm; the photo takes 30 minutes to process and you can get one per day.

Are you a boss at Mario Kart? If you think you’re the champ at that type of cart racing video or arcade game, it’s time to up the ante and bet on it.

Running Rich Racing by Competition Interactive, which just had its worldwide debut at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino, is the next evolution of casino skill-based gaming and it’s seriously fun.

If you’re wondering how one wins money off what looks like a sweet racing arcade game, well, so were we. It turns out it’s simple and there are multiple ways to score a victory. Players can win based on skill and they can also win based on chance. That means if you tend to “enjoy the scenic route” in racing games, aka ride the wall on every hard turn and have a better knowledge of what the backs of your opponents’ carts look like, you still have the chance to win money.

“INFERNO: The Fire Spectacular” at Paris Las Vegas is truly unlike any other show on the Strip. It’s definitely a whole lot hotter and that’s not just because of the copious amounts of fire. The Fuel Girls are the new breed of Vegas showgirl and their sultry allure is one of a kind.

This brand new show is heating up the Strip in a unique way. Your evening will be more exciting at “INFERNO” because the performers are literally playing with fire. You think you’re tough for putting out a candle with wet fingers? Imagine swallowing flames and escaping a straight jacket while fire nips at your toes. The stars of “Inferno” do all this and more, all while looking incredibly sexy.

European master magician Joe Labero elevates his magic with the addition of fire, making his illusions that much more impressive. Labero has received the prestigious “Illusionist of the Decade” award from the Merlin Award Society. Expect expert sleight of hand that will definitely leave you scratching your head. We don’t want to give too much away but be on the look out for an astonishing card trick that’s really super cool.

Cue Alicia Keys’ “Girl on Fire” because The Fuel Girls are literally on fire! The Fuel Girls aren’t your average magician’s assistants. They’re tatted up and can crack a fiery bullwhip like you wouldn’t believe. Once they start twirling flame-filled props, you won’t be able to look away. Expect some of the hottest aerial stunts with a side of high flying flames.

Gasoline flows like water at this fiery spectacle that makes use of video screens so you can see all the close-up magic. “Inferno” makes use of every inch of the gorgeous Paris Theater stage with grand scale illusions and artistic acrobatics, with the added element of flames, of course. The bottom line is everything’s sexier in Paris and it gets even hotter at “INFERNO.”

11 Las Vegas resorts take top honors from U.S. News & World Report By Richard N. Velotta Las Vegas Review-Journal

Eleven Las Vegas resorts made U.S. News &World Report’s list of the world’s top hotels, the Washington-based organization reported Monday.

The 11 “gold badge” winners, the top 10 percent of the list, out of 46 ranked hotels in Southern Nevada place Las Vegas in a tie for second with Los Angeles for the most gold properties in the United States. New York has 24 out of 231 ranked hotels on the list, and Los Angeles has 11 out of 87 ranked properties.

Six properties affiliated with MGM Resorts International are toward the top of the list as well as two each from Wynn Resorts and Las Vegas Sands. The highest-ranked Caesars Entertainment property is Nobu Hotel at Caesars Palace, which placed 18th.

Stevens has ‘Grandissimo’ vision for downtown Las Vegas resort by John Katsliometes

Derek Stevens, co-owner of The D Las Vegas, is busy remaking what he calls “the most important city block in the history of Las Vegas,” on the corner of Main and Fremont streets. Stevens is demolishing, in a very measured manner, Las Vegas Club, Glitter Gulch and Mermaids to create a block-long resort near the very spot where Las Vegas was born.

“The significance of that location is hard to overstate, with 20 million people visiting downtown every year,” Stevens said during an interview on Kats! On the Radio on KUNV 91.5-FM (I am the Kats in that equation). “We have a responsibility not just for downtown, but for all of the community to do something special there.”

Stevens offers no specific timeline or details on design or how many rooms are to be open in his new resort. He did say the name would be a throwback Las Vegas reference.

Clint Holmes, Earl Turner open ‘Soundtrack’ at Westgate by John Katsliometes

This soundtrack has passed “The Rainbow Test.”

    Earl Turner explains.

“A few weeks ago we were talking about what a set list for this show would be, and Clint started singing, ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow,’ kind of randomly,” Turner says, referring to his close friend and, now performing partner Clint Holmes. “It’s a song everyone knows that touches everyone. We decided then that every song we do for the show must pass ‘The Rainbow’ test.”

Thus is the template for “Soundtrack: Your Songs. Our Story. The Show,” the latest production show booked at International Theater at Westgate Las Vegas.

After the fall, ‘Fantasy’ aerialist has become a star by John Katsliometes

The first time I ever talked with Sonya Sonnenberg, she was out of it.

“I was heavily sedated on morphine that day,” she said Monday. “That’s all I remember about that interview.”

Sonnenberg was referring to our July 1, 2009 phone chat, which happened while she was in the trauma care unit at Sunrise Hospital. In a harrowing incident at Las Vegas Hilton Theater, Sonnenberg was seriously injured in a fall three days earlier during rehearsals for the Golden Rainbow “Ribbon of Life” charity show.

Renovations at Tuscany casino include $5 million in upgrades to suites by Mick Akers

A $5 million room renovation project at the Tuscany is almost complete.

The two-year project refreshed the off-Strip hotel and casino’s 716 suites with new furniture, carpeting and tile, paint, baseboards and bathroom vanities. Showers will be updated through the end of the year with new plumbing fixtures and marble.

“We are an all-suite property, so I think we have a unique property in respect to the size of our rooms, and we wanted a fresh contemporary” look, Tuscany owner Brett Heers said. “We did something that we think will be competitive.”

Heers said he's wanted to renovate the rooms for the past eight years but didn’t pull the trigger until after he became the property’s full owner two years ago. It’s the first time since the Tuscany opened in 2002 that the rooms have received a total makeover, he said.

Scott Conant Ready to Debut His Newest Italian Restaurant by Susan Stappleton

    Scott Conant
, a frequent judge on Chopped, made quick work of revamping the former Salute Italian Trattoria at Red Rock Resort into Masso Osteria. Now the chef plans to debut his new restaurant on Friday, Feb. 16, with a decor inspired by the desert and a menu of Italian fare.

Conant plans to serve whole sea bass al forno, tagliata di manzo, lamb shank, steak Fiorentina, stromboli, creamy polenta boscaiola, a wood-roasted clams casino, and perhaps his most famous dish, pasta al pomodoro.

Conant even introduces a clever cocktail, the Lightbulb, with Bols Genever, Campari, and sweet vermouth, served in a light bulb. A portion of the proceeds from every one of these Instagram-worthy cocktails will benefit to Keep Memory Alive, the charitable effort to study and prevent brain diseases in cooperation with Las Vegas’ Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health.

Conant chose the word “masso,” which is Italian for “boulder,” “to reflect the rocky desert landscape that surrounds his adopted city.”

Conant got his Vegas start with D.O.C.G. Enoteca and Scarpetta at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. D.O.C.G. closed in June, and Conant is no longer involved with Scarpetta.

China Tang Now Has an Opening Date at the MGM Grand by Susan Stappleton

One of the biggest restaurant openings of the year gets ready to showcase its Chinese fine dining dishes for the first time in the United States. China Tang debuts at the MGM Grand on Jan. 26 with an elegantly appointed dining room and a menu of Cantonese cuisine, inspired by Sichuan, Shanghai, and Beijing regional favorites.

The restaurant features a huge bar and lounge facing Emeril’s New Orleans Fish House, along the restaurant row of The District at MGM Grand. The prime position, inside the former home of Pearl will be impossible to miss for conventioneers and Monorail passengers headed to the casino floor.

This marks the first U.S. expansion for the Hong Kong-based Lai Sun Dining company, whose restaurants have earned 10 Michelin stars. Lai Sun imported executive chef Albert Au Kwok Keung to oversee China Tang. Keung is the world’s youngest Chinese chef to helm a three Michelin starred restaurant, the Cantonese-focused The Eight inside Macau’s Grand Lisboa Hotel.

The restaurant takes over 5,484-square-foot space and last year China Tang had allocated an estimated $1,286,800 in construction costs for the structural work alone.

China Tang plans to be open Monday through Thursday from 5 to 10:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to midnight, and Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., with extended hours during the Chinese New Year.

A Barbecue Restaurant Closes at Town Square by Bradley Martin

Barbecue restaurant Pot Liquor has shuttered at Town Square, for a surprising and unpredicted reason.

While rumors circulated that the restaurant planned to close before the end of last year, the Southern Nevada Health District pulled the plug on the space for “non-payment of permit fees” in 2017-2018 on Jan. 22. The restaurant phone number is no longer accepting incoming calls.

Pot Liquor has yet to address the forced closure, making no mention on its website, social media pages, or still active Grubhub account. Town Square also still includes the 6,622-square-foot corner restaurant on its own website. It remains unclear if the shut down will become permanent. The restaurant was last visited by the health district on Dec. 22, passing a re-inspection with a C grade.

Launched in 2014 as Pot Liquor CAS, an abbreviation of “Contemporary American Smokehouse,” owners Flip Arbelaez and Doug Bell changed the name to Pot Liquor Smokehouse Barbecue in June of last year. Peach, mesquite and cherry woods smoked the meats for up to 12 hours inside the “Big Hank” smoker.
