Plaza Hotel & Casino continues casino upgrades, leading to record growth

Continuing its commitment to enhancing its casino offerings, the Plaza Hotel & Casino provides guests with more gaming options than ever before, including the launch of Keno next month, a wide variety of slot machines with some of the highest payouts in the city and new hi-tech roulette tables. As a result, the popular downtown property is experiencing record growth.

Since the property began revamping its casino operations and hotel amenities in 2015, the Plaza has seen its gaming revenue and hotel occupancy levels surge. It consistently outperforms the impressive win increases of downtown Las Vegas, a submarket that continues to lead the state’s growth trends. While downtown gaming revenue increased 18.2 percent in the first quarter of 2017, the Plaza saw an increase of 25.6 percent during the same period.

"Over the past few years, the Plaza has redesigned and upgraded its casino floor to be more competitive and favorable to players, making it the place to play downtown," said Jonathan Jossel, CEO of the Plaza. "We have something for everyone on a fun and exciting casino floor with some of the highest payouts in the city, and our customers are really enjoying the improvements."

In June, the Plaza will open its Keno lounge on the casino floor. Games will run every 5-8 minutes from 8 a.m. to midnight daily. The Plaza will also offer MegaKeno and Mega 10 Keno giving players access to statewide progressives with higher jackpots and possible payouts in the millions.

"Given the Plaza's long and successful history of offering the only bingo room in downtown Las Vegas, adding Keno made perfect sense," added Jossel.

Keno monitors with live games will be located throughout the casino floor, including at the new Brightside - Breakfast & Burgers restaurant, the Race & Sports Book bar, Omaha Lounge, Hash House A Go Go, and inside the Bingo room on the third floor. Members of the Plaza's Royal Rewards Players Club can earn points for Keno play.

Three new, state-of-the-art roulette tables by TCSJOHNHUXLEY further enhance the excitement on the casino floor. Only available in Las Vegas at the Plaza, the new roulette tables instantly stand out as they feature the latest LED gaming surface technology enabling the table to vibrantly light up the winning numbers, colors, even or odd and winning section, increasing the excitement for seasoned and inexperienced players alike.

Reversing the industry trend, the Plaza recently added nearly 200 slot machines, including some of the industry's latest technology, two dozen classic coin machines and upgraded video poker cabinets and paytables. Most recently, the Plaza debuted the oversized Oscar's Slot Machine, a colossal diamonds game from AGS located near Oscar's, the famous steakhouse housed inside the Plaza's landmark glass dome and named for former mob attorney turned Las Vegas Mayor, Oscar Goodman.

Magician Mat Franco is feeling very much at home at the Linq by Brock Radke

Performing in a Las Vegas Strip showroom with his name over the door was never a goal for Mat Franco. For that matter, neither was winning America's Got Talent and its $1 million prize. The 29-year-old magician was perfectly happy making a living by showing his stuff at small shows across the country before he landed on AGT's ninth season and took the prize; he's still the only magic act to do so.

His life is changing again this summer when his home on the Strip, the Linq Theater at the same-named hotel and casino, will be rechristened as the Mat Franco Theater in July. We caught up with the amicable, innovative star winner of the Readers Choice Award for Best Strip Show in last year's Las Vegas Weekly Best of Vegas to talk about his fast rise and the state of magic in Las Vegas.

Gordie Brown delivers stellar impersonations at Planet Hollywood by Robin Leach/LVRJ

I lost count of the number of voices that impressionist Gordie Brown delivered on his opening night at Cabaret Show Lounge at Planet Hollywood on Tuesday night.

Gordie's delivery at rat-a-tat speed was a nonstop barrage of hilarity and music, with old and new favorites ranging from President Trump and Arnold Schwarzenegger to the late Robin Williams and all three of The Bee Gees, which was a triumph in its own right.

Gordie has swapped the showroom at Downtown's Golden Nugget for the intimacy of this lounge to return him rightfully to the Strip as a headline entertainer. The blue-haired fans get their tingles when he delivers a better Elvis than Presley himself and when Stevie Wonder cannons into Ray Charles.

Redesign pushes Resorts World Las Vegas opening date to 2020 By Regina Garcia Cano, AP

A years-delayed multibillion-dollar casino-resort project on the Las Vegas Strip that would cater to the city's Chinese and Chinese-American tourists announced Wednesday that it is pushing back its opening date by another year to 2020.

The new delay is the result of an overhaul of the original design meant to attract younger gamblers, said Edward Farrell, the veteran casino industry executive leading the $4 billion, 3,000-room Resorts World Las Vegas project.

The plans of Malaysia-based Genting Group for the site on the Strip's northern end include a 100,000-square-foot casino, dining options of authentic Asian cuisine and retail space.

The comic-magician will headline Rocks Lounge at Red Rock Resort Oct. 6-7, his first appearances since being diagnosed with a heart ailment nearly five years ago.

I don't have to worry about spending a ton of time on advertising and billboards, the Amazing Johnathan (last name Szeles) said Wednesday. I'm just going in and doing it.

As has been well-chronicled, the 58-year-old headliner learned he had a degenerative heart conditionin 2013, not long after leaving his gig at Bally's.

Over-the-top rock tributes offer fun choices by Mike Weatherford/LVRJ

You gotta rock. It's the law, etched in vinyl. Lighter thumb's twitchin, beer hand's clutchin. But where?

Do you want Heart's Alone sung by Lily Arce but backed by that dude who played guitar in the real Heart and stood in between the Wilson sisters in all their publicity photos but whose name evades you? (It's Howard Leese.) Or do you want to hear it from two women (Cassie Stone and Ann Martinez) actually suited up as Ann and Nancy Wilson, with Stone really sounding like Heart's Ann?

Want to hear Journey's Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) sung by the guy (Andrew Freeman) who used to be in George Lynch's Lynch Mob? Or the guy (Paul Johnson) who starred in the Rock of Ages musical?

Are plans in the works for the ridiculously silly SyFy series Sharknado to be transformed into a live show for the Strip? The idea seems as far-fetched as the four Ian Ziering-Tara Reid comedy disaster flicks. The latest "Sharknado 4: The 4th Awakens" had the denizens of the deep attacking our Las Vegas Strip and its thrill-ride scream attractions.

The story of Jane's Addiction frontman Perry Farrell's dream of a musical based on the sex trade and a drug bust in Thailand titled Kind Heaven has been around since his first creative idea for it in 2014. But now comes growing word that since his visit here to tour hotel showrooms, the reality of it being staged on the Strip grows more likely.

Perry says that the project, which tells of a soldier falling in love with a sex worker who runs away with him to a Buddhist monastery, will force him to put the rock group on hiatus for at least two years. Perry says he won't appear in the production, which will be more interactive performance art than traditional theater, with audiences walking through staging.

Singer Clint Holmes celebrated his birthday and residency opening at Golden Nugget.

Wow Splash: A new show called Wow Splash has been announced for the Rio. The name and description -- the set includes an open pool -- is reminiscent of Splash at the Riviera, a show that was part of the transformation from the stuffy showgirl extravaganzas to the fast-paced modern-dance-dominated variety shows. To commemorate the announcement, Ramsay skillfully ignited the series '17-foot signature pitchfork' transported straight from the set of the hit FOX show in the center of Caesars iconic fountains. This marks Ramsay's fifth Las Vegas restaurant and extends his successful partnership with Caesars Entertainment. As is the case at Chef Ramsay's other restaurants, the quality of the food and dining experience is paramount for the HELL'S KITCHEN restaurant.

Masterfully designed by Jeffrey Beers International to be an experiential and immersive destination restaurant, guests will feel transported to the studio set, as if they are participating in the globally popular television show, the 17th season of which will air during the 2017-2018 season on FOX. With design features that are engaging to all senses and are a nod to both the red and blue teams featured on the show, the dynamic and bustling kitchen will be the centerpiece of this unique eatery to be enjoyed and appreciated from every seat in the house.

Fans of the show have been asking us to bring a HELL'S KITCHEN restaurant to life since day one, so I'm thrilled to finally be doing it here at Caesars Palace, said Ramsay. The high-energy restaurant and bar will take its cue directly from the eponymous ITV Entertainment and FOX primetime television hit seen worldwide by millions of viewers, and will shine the spotlight on many of HELL'S KITCHEN cast/chef recipes and dishes featured on the show, including many of Chef Ramsay's signature dishes.

Gordon is a true visionary and all of us at ITV America are thrilled to be working with him on this passion project, which brings the HELL'S KITCHEN experience to so many fans. Blackout Dining in the Dark Opening on the Westside by Bradley Martin

They won't be needing windows or a patio, but in an ironic twist, the forthcoming Blackout restaurant space has inherited both. Located a short distance from the Gold Coast, Rio and Palms resorts at the intersection of Viking Road and Valley View Boulevard, Blackout will offer "Dining in the Dark" for guests who want to challenge their remaining four senses and enjoy a meal in complete darkness.

Created by Rachel Roberts-Levi and her husband Avraham Levi, Blackout is currently under construction, converting the 3,428-square-foot corner plot at the Valley View Business Center. The couple has experience operating another novelty local venture, Design & Dine, which lets customers "eat, drink and paint" under the supervision of instructors.

While details of Blackout are very scant, Roberts-Levi has hinted the menu will feature vegan options. At Design & Dine the menu includes paninis, flatbread pizzas and desserts. Improvements on the Blackout tenant space began in March, but an official project announcement or a projected opening day have yet to be revealed.

A previous attempt at creating a "dark dining" experience using blindfolds was hosted at the shuttered Mood Restaurant inside the Artisan Hotel.

Bigger and Better Ping Pang Pong Debuts by Bradley Martin

It has yet to be announced by the Gold Coast resort, but they have something to shout about this weekend. Ping Pang Pong, one of Las Vegas' most beloved and busy Chinese restaurants has very quietly moved into its brand new space and is open for business.

The old location has closed and is directing guests eastwards on the casino floor to the larger new home on the site of the former Gold Coast showroom.

Diners will be greeted by two Chinese guardian lion statues and the knowledge it will be easier to find a seat inside a dining room with an upgraded maximum occupancy of 301. The makeover fills 5,749 square feet and was built with an estimated $3.1 million construction budget.

So far, the menu and opening hours are exactly the same, serving lunch and dim sum from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m and dinner from 5 p.m. to 3 a.m. The open plan design features Chinese lanterns, a roomier and softer lit dining room and servers taking orders on handheld electronic devices.

Created by Kevin and Karrie Wu in 2001, they also debuted Noodle Exchange at the resort in 2009, still open daily across from the new entrance to Ping Pang Pong.

NEW PARK MGM RESTAURANT WILL BE PRIMROSE WITH CHEF SHUMAN

Michelin-starred Chef Bryce Shuman has partnered with Sydell Group to open Primrose, one of the first restaurants slated to open at Park MGM in Las Vegas this fall.

The restaurant will feature a South of France-inspired, vegetable-forward menu, with an emphasis on open-fire cooking. Primrose is part of the property's transformation from Monte Carlo into Park MGM and will be situated between the lobby and pool.

Shuman is formerly of New York City's Betony, which garnered three stars from "The New York Times," was "Esquire" magazine's "Restaurant of the Year," and a James Beard Foundation finalist for "Best New Restaurant" in the country. Shuman was named "Food & Wine Magazine's" "Best New Chef" in 2015.

Martin Brudnizki is designing the space to have a residential feel evoking a series of rooms in a country house leading out to a lush garden and terrace inspired by Southern France. The restaurant will be managed by Sydell Group. Last spring, MGM Resorts and Sydell Group announced a partnership to reimagine and rebrand the Monte Carlo to include two distinct new hotel experiences: Park MGM, and a Las Vegas-version of Sydell's widely acclaimed NoMad Hotel.

Hobak Korean BBQ might have started a trend for moving Chinatown restaurants into very nondescript business centers. The new 8 oz Korean Steak House is headed to the Mountain Point Business Park on Spring Mountain Road, claiming 3,930 square feet on the Stober Boulevard side of the mixed-use center and sitting half a mile west of the better-known Chinatown Plaza.

Serving one of the hottest trends of the moment, 8 oz will feature Korean barbecue and also install a bar. Of note, the pricey estimated construction budget of $350,000, a confident outlay when cheaper options are known to dot the neighborhood.

The $450 million transformation of the Monte Carlo into Park MGM and NoMad Las Vegas will include a French-inspired, vegetable-forward menu from chef Bryce Shuman at Primrose. But like any major resort, Park MGM knows it also needs to invest in a marquee steakhouse to appeal to lovers of quality red meat.

Yet to be named, or announced by the property, a new and impressively sized 10,035-square-foot steakhouse will solve that problem and is confirmed to be on the way. By comparison, at the Venetian, Carnevino fills 13,287 square feet and Cut by Wolfgang Puck covers 11,060 square feet. The Monte Carlo's own Brand Steakhouse currently fills an approximate 5,000-square-foot area on the north side of the casino floor. Brand will shutter on Thursday, May 11, to make way for the massive improvements.

The campaign is called "Slice Out Special" and is produced by a NYC-based nonprofit called Slice Out Hunger, which supports hunger relief and prevention organizations through the American pizza community. Evel Pie will be featuring the "Slice Out" slice topped with fresh mozzarella, Fontina cheese, cherry tomatoes, sausage and red onion. One hundred percent of the proceeds from all pizzeria sales will benefit No Kid Hungry.

    WHEN: May 1-31, 2017

WHERE: Evel Pie 508 Fremont St. Las Vegas, NV 89101

Six months after first filing permit paperwork to bring fast casual burger legends White Castle downtown, developers Herbst Richardson have finally confirmed the brand's famous sliders are on the way.

Taking over 3,428 square feet at the corner of Fremont and Fourth streets, White Castle will slot into the former home of a $10 discount store, T-shirt shop and cigar store, sharing the 5,615-square-foot building with a revamped Harley Davidson retail venture.

Fin-Addicts, rejoice. A Southern California favorite for 25 years finally lands in Las Vegas. Sharky's Woodfired Mexican Grill debuts today at the corner of Fort Apache Road and Charleston Boulevard in the former Mac Shack space, bringing its "Feel Good About Eating" menu.

Tacos and burritos, nachos, enchiladas, power plates and salads make the menu using organic, non-GMO, hormone-free ingredients. Vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free dining options are available.

Austin Russell, better known as Chumlee from the History channel's hit TV show "Pawn Stars" is bringing a sweet solution to his boss' Pawn Plaza retail center.

Originally named Chumlee's Candyland and destined for the shuttered Rita's Italian Ice space, Chumlee's Candy on the Boulevard is now almost ready to open inside the vacant home of Pawn Donut and Coffee.

From Hawaii to Tennessee, a flavor switcheroo has taken place at the Tavern Retail Center in the southwest, with the shuttered Braddah's Island Style now home to the southern smoked barbecue of Tennesseasonings.

Taking over the easy to find corner spot at the intersection of Warm Springs Road and Tenaya Way, chef Michael Harris and his co-owner wife Laura are Tennessee natives, who have dedicated their barbecue skills to slow smoked pork and chicken and created a roster of authentic Southern sides.

Open Tuesday to Saturday from noon to 8 p.m., the comfort food menu features 'meat and veg combos' and desserts such as Key lime pie and banana pudding.

The "everyday" meat selection features smoked pork shoulder and chicken and baby back ribs. A half rack is available for $16.75 and a full rack upgrade costs $22.25.

Heading in a different direction than Giada on the second floor, self-described "quick service restaurant" Eatwell is on its way to the casino floor at Cromwell, counter service spot will spend an estimated $350,000 in construction costs to build the 950-square-foot project, hosting a maximum occupancy of 28 inside the open-plan space.

The quick and simple menu is pitched to lure in the younger crowd attending the Victor Drai curated night and day scene. Contributing to the designs are locals Dezmotif Studios, last seen working on the very splashy Le Central lobby bar at Paris Las Vegas, Gordon Ramsay Burger at Planet Hollywood and and the shuttered Purple Zebra at the Linq Promenade.

Chefs up and down the Strip are abuzz with gossip that Italian chef and Food Network superstar Giada De Laurentiis will open a second Las Vegas restaurant before the end of the year. I am reliably told that the deal is set. Caesars Palace officials will not yet confirm that it''ll be located in that property. Giada has run her successful restaurant Giada at The Cromwell for three years.

Giada won't confirm its location, either, but did admit to me mysteriously: It's a significant step in the Giadization in Las Vegas. Now I don't intend to be Gordon Ramsay, but I needed another challenge, and I think that just to be relevant.

Orleans Buffet Partially Closed: The Orleans buffet has been closed for a remodel. The following notice is posted on the Orlean's website: "Effective Monday, May 15th, we have temporarily relocated across from our current location during our remodel. We will be offering breakfast and lunch only, we apologize for the inconvenience."

Taste of Tennessee: A new barbecue joint called Tennesseasonings has opened at 7315 W. Warm Springs Road. It's being promoted as the first Las Vegas restaurant to feature East Tennessee-style BBQ, which differs from the Memphis style that's already represented in town. What's the difference? According to the owner, “East Tennessee primarily focuses on pork and is best enjoyed dry " no sauce required."

Hamburger Joint Returning: More than a decade after it closed on Harmon across from the Hard Rock, Hamburger Mary's may be making a Las Vegas comeback. The LGBT-themed restaurant (that makes good burgers) is reportedly due to reopen as part of the Flair nightclub on E. Flamingo, possibly this summer.

To celebrate National Burger Day on May 28, Brightside Breakfast & Burgers at the Plaza is offering 20 percent off any burger on its menu during the month of May when the customer says "National Burger Day."

At the Monte Carlo, d.vino Italian Food & Wine Bar is celebrating National Hamburger Month with a new Italian Burgerfest menu available through May 28. Executive Chef Martin Garcia has created five gourmet burgers fusing the all-American dish with authentic Italian ingredients.

Jared's Old Fashioned Hot Dogs & Hamburgers is now open daily from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Pawn Plaza downtown featuring a variety of classic hot dogs and hamburgers with a choice of toppings, onion rings, French fries and tater tots.
