Southwest trims flights to Las Vegas.
Airline plans to have 12 fewer daily round trips into McCarran starting Nov. 7. BY: Richad N. Velotta/Las Vegas Sun.
Southwest Airlines will offer more than 1,600 fewer seats a day into the Las Vegas market in the winter months following a seasonal schedule change that takes effect in November.
The Dallas-based carrier, the busiest at McCarran International Airport, will have 12 fewer daily round trips into the market beginning Nov. 7. The Las Vegas market took the biggest hit in Southwest’s system as the airline trimmed its schedule by 106 flights to 3,156 a day.
Southwest currently operates 217 flights a day in and out of Las Vegas according to McCarran figures.
The end of two of the 12 flights will mean the loss of two nonstop markets for Las Vegas: Long Island’s MacArthur Airport and Norfolk, Va.
Southwest also is eliminating two daily flights between Las Vegas and Salt Lake City, reducing the total number of flights from seven to five, and three flights to and from Southern California.
One round trip each will be eliminated on flights to and from Albuquerque, N.M. (from six flights a day to five); Baltimore-Washington International Airport (from four to three); Buffalo, N.Y. (from two to one); Denver (from nine to eight); Los Angeles International Airport (from 12 to 11); Omaha, Neb. (from three to two); Ontario, Calif. (from eight to seven); and San Diego (from 12 to 11).
Reno-Tahoe International Airport lost six flights in the schedule change with one round trip each eliminated to and from Boise, Idaho; Los Angeles; Oakland, Calif.; Phoenix; Portland, Ore.; and San Jose, Calif.

Sandy Hackett reveals his heartache that lingers long after his father’s death. By Sandy Hackett/Las Vegas Sun.
My father was Buddy Hackett. My whole life, I never liked to tell people that because as soon as they found that out, they almost always had a perception of whom I was that wasn’t even close.
My father was fortunate to have a great career. He was paid well for his work, and fame came with his success. He had a cherubic face and was like a living Pillsbury Dough Boy. People always wanted to touch him. Most thought he was rich and, therefore, I must be rich, too. That’s not how it was.
I had my first job when I was 11 working for the recreation department refereeing games after school and on weekends. I think I made about a buck an hour. I always liked to work. It was something my folks instilled in me at a young age. At 14, I worked as a runner making and delivering blueprints for an architectural firm. The summer I turned 15, my father helped me get a job as a lifeguard at the pool at the Stardust in Las Vegas. I did that during the day, and at night I worked as a cook’s helper in the coffee shop of the Sahara, where my father headlined 20 to 30 weeks a year.
My father didn’t start out wealthy or famous. He was the son of immigrant parents who worked ridiculous hours to make ends meet. My dad wanted to be a doctor but didn’t have money to go to college. He was drafted in World War II and went into the Army. The war ended before he was shipped overseas. My father’s father was an upholsterer; he taught my father to work with his hands. The Army left my father with a fascination about guns. My father always worked hard, and he taught me to do the same.
When my father passed away, he left behind an accumulated wealth in the millions. My father talked to me about estate planning when we use to tour together. I wish he had taken his own advice. His estate planning was antiquated and set in place before he had amassed the better part of his wealth. He told me endlessly that he wanted his money to go to his children because he had worked hard for his children. He also left my mother very well off. He trusted her to fulfill his wishes and manage the trust he set up for his kids 35 years before his passing when his kids weren’t old enough to make decisions.
new man found his way into my mother’s life. I call him The Felon. He is 24 years my mother’s junior. He served time in prison for stealing from others. He is a con man and a crook and has already managed to get my mother to fire my father’s lifelong friend and accountant, who helped my father hold on to what he worked so hard for all his life. He’s conned my mother into making him a co-trustee on the Hackett assets. He’s already gotten her to give him millions, and recently I came to find out he got her to marry him.
My sister and I were forced to file a petition in L.A. Superior Court to safeguard my father’s legacy, protect my mother from the undue influence of The Felon and prevent him from fleecing her of everything and leaving her destitute.
My mother refuses to talk with me or my sister despite our repeated attempts to open the lines of communication. The Felon served time for conning people out of thousands of dollars. Now he’s conning for millions. In the process, I have lost a mother, and The Felon is trying to manage my father’s legacy. It’s all so pathetic and not what my father wanted.
So here’s the lesson: If you are someone who has done well for yourself, then you should be very precise in your estate planning for your money and assets when you are gone. You should make detailed plans, trusts and a will. Update them regularly. You should speak for yourself as to what you want to happen when you are no longer here, and you should make sure that nobody can alter your intent.
You should have a conversation with those you are leaving behind and let them know how you feel about them and that you have left a plan for when you are gone. You may choose to let them know or not know your plan, that choice is yours, but if you want them to have your belongings, then you should probably let them know while you are alive. If you are the children of someone who has done well, you should approach these uncomfortable subjects with your folks.
Do it now before it’s too late and they are either incapacitated by health or death. None of this is easy or fun to discuss. The alternative is to leave behind a mess, pain and heartache that never go away.
If by telling you my story I am able to save one other person the grief my sister and I have been forced to suffer, then my suffering will have purpose.
If you run into my mother and her new husband, please remember that he’s a con man and a felon. He’s taking her, and he will take you if you let him.

Unholy Matrimony from What’s-On Magazine.
Do you ever get the feeling when you’re sitting in a room full of strangers that one of them, maybe even the person sitting right next to you, might be a murderer? At Marriage Can Be Murder, the interactive, mystery comedy dinner theater at Fitzgeralds downtown, someone in the room is a cold-blooded killer!
As you casually sit at your communal table with your pre-show salad, make small talk with your fellow diners, checking them out for questionable behavior. That sweet little old lady across from you who claims she’s from Des Moines? She might not be who she says she is.
As the show begins, your hostess—a ditzy platinum blonde with a sharp wit—leads the audience through the evening, complete with impromptu conversations with audience members, many of which will have you in stitches, until the first body drops. The evening is then somewhat taken over by a bike cop who happens to be on duty—the hostess and cop are played to great comic effect by real-life married couple Jayne and Eric Post, who created the show.
Suddenly, everyone is a suspect (except the dead guy), and while you mull over the crime, you’ll also be dining on your main course—lemon chicken, beef sirloin, salmon or a vegetarian option. Using a handy notepad on your table, you can write down clues as every suspicious person is grilled by the hosts. Will you know whodunit by the time the strawberry cheesecake is served? Or will you be the next victim?
Marriage Can Be Murder is not only one of the most entertaining evenings to be had, it’s also the longest-running dinner show in Las Vegas and the mysteries change every few months, so you can see the show every time you’re in town!
Marriage Can Be Murder | Nightly, 6:30 p.m. | $60.45, $76.95 VIP | Showroom, Fitzgeralds | 702-388-2111

At Palace Station, Louie Anderson sets the stage for self-improvement with new show, new room. By: John Katsliomentes/Las Vegas Sun.
For Louie Anderson, it’s a yet-to-be mined vein of comedic gold. It’s a way to connect on a human level with millions of his fans, and those who might be.
More important, it’s a means of adding years to his life and career; the most effective way to improve his health and enhance the quality of his life.
We speak, of course, of weight loss. Potential weight loss, in this instance. Anderson’s potential weight loss, specifically.

Steve’s Las Vegas Quickies:
Wayne’s World: August 2010. BY: Wayne bernath.
Lance Burton’s record 14-year run at the Monte Carlo Resort &
Casino is unprecedented. Remind your fares to see his “Master Magician”
show as soon as possible since his final show at the Monte Carlo will be
Saturday, Sept. 4. It’s all part of the evolution of show business on The Las
Vegas Strip. The big question is what’s next for the Master Magician. Only
Lance Burton and Siegfried & Roy have had a custom showroom built for
them by the hotel owners. Remember to watch for him on Discovery
Channel’s “Cash Cab” this fall. “Lance Burton & Friends” will do a
benefit for the Zelzah Shrine Temple (The Shriners) at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug.
22. Tickets can be picked up at 2222 W. Mesquite Ave. (corner of Rancho
& Mesquite).
Here’s a trivia question for you. What are the two longest running
shows in Las Vegas? Would you believe “Jubilee” and “Legends in
Concert.” “Tournament of Kings” is now the fourth longest running
having recently celebrated their 20th anniversary.
Believe it or not now there’s a magician performing at the Can Can
Room on Industrial. It’s the oldest all-nude club in Las Vegas. Bram
Charles performs two sets between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. on Fridays,
Saturdays and Sundays.
At 2 p.m. on Thursdays, Sam’s Club will host a 75-minute musical
variety show thru Aug. 26. Admission is free with a Coast Club member
card. There will be an array of musical acts such as the ladies from
“Menopause the Musical.” Clint Holmes will host as emcee and James
D’Arrigo is the musical director of the full orchestra.
Music, dance and magical skills will highlight the Las Vegas Hilton’s
newest show to open on Oct. 3. Larry and Rafael will star in “Triumph.”
It delves into the influences of H.G. Wells and Jules Verne supported with
technology. It’s a story of good vs. evil. Tickets will be a reasonable $34.95
+ tax and up.
Cher’s show at Caesars Palace gets a “10.” The two-plus extravaganza
not only offered her many hits such as “If I Could Turn Back Time,”
“Believe,” “Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves” plus much, much more but she
changed costumes with each song while her dancers and acrobats did their
routines. She returns on Sept. 4th for another run at The Colosseum. The
only show in August performing in this fabulous theatre is Bob Dylan and his Band with John Mellencamp on the 18th.
Cher is certainly a superstar and puts on a show that you will never forget. Don’t miss her!
Thunder from Down Under” who recently celebrated their 8th
anniversary at the Excalibur on July 5th flew to Peachtree City, GA for a
part in Lifetime’s hit show “Drop Dead Diva” starring Brooke Elliott in a
dream sequence. This episode will air on Sunday, Aug. 1st. I recall taking
my wife to see “Thunder from Down Under” at the old Stardust in the
mid-‘90s along with her girlfriends so I could review the show. They
performed in the convention room and had a good crowd.
Louie Anderson is leaving the Excalibur for the Palace Station. He will
be opening sometime in September.
Here’s the line-up for some worthy shows coming up in August: Bob
Dylan & John Mellencamp at The Colosseum in Caesars Palace on Aug.

Las Vegas Advisor’s Top Ten Values: August 2010.
1. Casino Expansion – South Point – Daily – Free
In line with LVA’s tradition of highlighting new and improved properties in the Top Ten, number one this month is the casino expansion at South Point. It’s not exactly grandiose and we debated whether it was enough to warrant the honorary placement, but South Coast just might be Las Vegas’ best gambler’s casino, so adding even more for gamblers was reason enough for us. Take the five-mile drive south of the Strip to see for yourself.
2. Room Rates – Wild Wild West – 24 hours – $24 and up
Room rates remain low enough to mark 20 consecutive months at the top of the Top Ten, displaced from number-one only on occasions when new properties open, such as this month.
3. Steak Dinner – Ellis Island – 24 hours – $6.95
Ellis Island’s steak dinner consists of a 10-ounce filet-cut sirloin, salad, garlic green beans, choice of potato, and a microbrewed beer.
4. Happy Hour – Caesars Palace Palm/Forum Shops – Mon.-Fri. – $1-$3.50
Las Vegas’ best happy hour is at the Palm steakhouse in the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace; hours are 4:30-6:30 pm and 9:30 pm till closing.
5. Dollar Days – Sahara – Daily – $1
At the Sahara’s Dollar Days, get beers, shots (with souvenir glass), and hot dogs for $1, along with $1-minimum blackjack, in the back of the casino near the NASCAR Café.
6. Buffet – M Resort – Daily – $14.95-$29.95
Studio B buffet at M Resort (#5) has returned to serving breakfast, from 7 to 10:30 am Monday through Friday, for $9.99. The weekends continue to run the seafood brunch all day for $29.95.
7. Pizza & Pitcher – Binion’s Gambling Hall & Hotel – Daily – $10
The 16-inch pizza and 60-ounce pitcher of beer at Binion’s is served in Benny’s Bullpen.
8. Beer – CityCenter Todd English P.U.B. – Tuesday 9-midnight – 5¢
On Tuesdays from 9 pm till midnight, you can get 5¢ beers. Yes, you read that right. No, that’s not a typo. Beers for a plug nickel. And they’re not at some dive bar that only Anthony Curtis could love. Rather, these eight-ounce cups of Pabst Blue Ribbon are served up in the new Todd English P.U.B. in the Crystals mall at CityCenter! Bring a quarter and drink all night.
9. Prime Rib – South Point – 24 hours – $12.95
We keep trying prime ribs, but we keep coming back to the big slab at South Point for the one-two combo of quality and price. It’s served 24 hours a day in the coffee shop, with your choice of soup or salad, potato, and rolls if you ask.
10. Dinner Show Special – Fitzgeralds – Nightly – $29.95
Departing the list is the special LVA deal on Zumanity, which concluded in July. The current best deal on a show is at Fitzgeralds. “Feast of Laughter” combines the Fitz of Laughter with Kevin Burke show and a good dinner for $29.95 (after a $3 ticket surcharge). To get your tickets, call 702/388-2111. There’s an additional discount available if you’re an LVA member; check the current issue for details and the promo code.

Angelica Bridges, the first-ever billed star of “Fantasy,” will bow out of Luxor’s topless revue Saturday.

Updated Hotel Review: Flamingo Las Vegas by Rick Garman.
It seems only appropriate that the retro-cool wave that has been sweeping Las Vegas should finally sweep back around to this place, one of the most famous (and now oldest continually operating) hotels on the Las Vegas Strip: The Flamingo. By embracing its fun and funky past, the hotel is well on its way to reinventing itself for a new generation and, believe it or not, now has some of the coolest rooms in town.
When The Flamingo opened in 1946 it was not, as is often reported, the first hotel on the dusty piece of desert that would eventually become ‘The Strip’. The first one was actually The El Rancho, which burned down in the 60’s. But although it wasn’t first, it certainly was the most heralded – a million-dollar oasis for the rich and powerful built by legendary (reputed) mobster Benjamin (Bugsy) Siegel.
Poor Bugsy wouldn’t recognize the place now. The last little bit of the original remaining structure was torn down in 1993 to make way for new construction. These days, The Flamingo is a huge, upscale tropical themed palace – not a mobster or moll in sight. Oh well.
The glittering pink and orange neon façade is one of the most famous in Vegas and the casino area is a faux-tropical wonderland. The gaming area wanders and meanders throughout the property so there are lots of different sections in which to spend your money but the overall feeling is pretty good. This is also one of the few places where you can still find low limits on blackjack tables, although they are becoming more rare here as well. To be honest, this isn’t a place that I spend a lot of time gambling in but not for any good reason other than there are places that I like better. They do have a full spectrum of gaming options including slots of all denominations, all the usual table games, a race and sports book, and a poker room.
But it is once you get upstairs that the real magic of The Flamingo begins, with their “GO” rooms. Done with a big nod to the Bugsy Siegel era, the rooms feature decidedly retro décor with big white padded vinyl headboards, white built in desks and chairs that look like they time traveled from the 1940s, and full walls of white drapes (electronic no less) offset by vibrant pinks and deep browns in the wallpaper, carpeting, and accents. Flat panel televisions, CD/DVD players, and high-speed Internet keep it modern so the overall effect is very hip. The bathrooms have also been completely redone with frosted glass walls, a television built into the mirror, and all new fixtures, lighting, and amenities. Staying in one of them will cost you extra (about $50 more per night if the website is any indication) but it’s totally worth it.
The standard rooms are much more pedestrian although larger than average with comfy furniture and all the typical amenities you’d come to expect in a Vegas room. Crisp white linens and throws give it a modern enough feeling but still, this is a comfortably plain room and nothing more.
Another truly remarkable part of the hotel is the pool that rivals The Mirage for the nicest in town. Dense tropical foliage frames the area and there are even live tropical animals including penguins and, you guessed it, flamingos. Get it?
There are several restaurants (including a branch of Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville) plus a couple of shows and a health club. If you’re really into committing to Vegas you can buy into a time-share.
It’s difficult to pin down prices here – sometimes they are higher than they have any right to be, but when they are moderate this is really a hotel you should pay attention to.
Although the overall package still places The Flamingo in the second tier of hotel choices for me, those GO rooms make a huge difference and move it up several notches in esteem.
The exterior has been given a sleek white coat, and the interior has adopted a look that resonates with Las Vegas’ increasingly younger customer. A new hotel called Rumor Las Vegas is the end product of the Siegel Group’s revamping.
The hotel opened last week to invited guests and will celebrate its grand opening in mid-September.

Lolita’s promises tequila on tap, food you’ll actually eat. BY: April Corbin/Las Vegas Weekly.
Real DJs battling holograms versions of themselves; flavored tequila on tap, delivered straight to your table; a quick-stop window for taco takeout; a barber-shop shot chair; a Mexican-themed bar with quality martinis; the possibility of balloon animals. … Is this crazy talk?
Nope. It’s the latest in food and nightlife, courtesy of the Lolita’s Mexican Cantina, which opens Friday inside Town Square.
“The whole concept is about having fun, being really interactive,” explains owner Eric DeBlasi. There will be Lolita’s Girls — some with flesh, some as digital illusions — and the former may grab reluctant customers in an effort to get the dance party started. A built-in stage provides an area for live entertainment — DJs, the requisite mariachi band, singers, etc.
Two bars (and a satellite bar on the spacious outdoor patio) offer a full alcohol selection, including more than 100 types of tequila and a variety of specialty margaritas and martinis. One half of Lolita’s dynamic duo, celebrity chef Carlo Cavallo, is an award-winning mixologist — something DeBlasi says will make a difference.
“We’re a Mexican bar, but we’ll be known for other drinks, too,” says DeBlasi.
And food. Joining Cavallo as an executive chef is Tacho Kneeland, formerly of Pink Taco and Border Grill. DeBlasi describes Lolita’s menu as Dos Caminos-quality food without the Dos Caminos price point. Fresh-made salsas are only the beginning of the modern Mexican menu, which will include tequila gelato.
“We really needed to do food right,” says DeBlasi. “I think most places are either known for being a great dinner spot, where you leave and go somewhere else afterward to drink, or a great place to party but you wouldn’t eat there. We need to have both.”
Lolita’s also will have a taco-takeout area called Tacos-A-GoGo, which will service customers on the go, or anyone too afraid of the futuristic holograms and tequila shots to stay inside. DeBlasi also hopes to market daytime Lolita’s as family-friendly — maybe with kid-appropriate holograms and balloon animals.
If it sounds like there’s something for everyone, you may be right, but DeBlasi insists it’s been done with care. “You can’t be everything to everyone. That never ends well. But everything we’re doing has been thought out and will work together.”
The kiosk will have the look and feel of REHAB cabanas on property and will be open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. thru the end of September. It will feature more than 40 REHAB branded items including t-shirts, jewelry, towels, VIP line passes, hats and more. Prices start at $6.95 and go up to $295.
Inspired by the beautiful villages of Europe, the AAA Five Diamond Bellagio overlooks a Mediterranean-blue lake in which the Fountains of Bellagio perform their magnificent aquatic ballet. Award-winning dining, a world-class art gallery, the exquisite Conservatory & Botanical Gardens, Cirque du Soleil’s stunning performance of “O,” a sumptuous spa and salon and exclusive luxury shopping all work together to compose the symphony that is Bellagio.
Chuck Rounds’ Las Vegas Entertainment News/ August 2010.
August is synonymous with the dogs days of summer here in Vegas-instead of a hot and dry 115 degrees, it’s 105 with enough humidity to make you sticky and sweat. The monsoon showers are always a threat at this time of year, and thunderstorms could pop up anywhere, anytime. According to all of the weather records, July is the hottest month in Las Vegas…but August always seems hotter. There are still a lot of pool parties and summer concerts going on. There are a lot of new shows in town, and the convention season is just getting started.
July was a very busy month in town…I think that the heat got to a lot of people…
Lani Misalucha and her show “Voices,” closed at the Hilton, and it will be replaced by a production of “Nunsense” starring Cindy Williams. Williams is best known for her role in “Laverne & Shirley.” She will kick off the production for the first six weeks. It is scheduled to open on September 1st.
“The Naughty Boys of Hypnosis” closed their show at the Harmon Theatre after a one-year run. The show is being replaced by “Hypnosis Unleashed,” with Michael Johns and Terry Stokes. “Unleashed” had been at the Harmon a long time ago before moving to the Tropicana Hotel. Now they are moving back because the room at the Trop is being renovated.
“Sin City Bad Girls” has closed at the Hilton…a shame…it was the best show of that genre in Las Vegas. Lead singer Lorena Peril is moving over to lead the cast of “Fantasy,” while former lead Angelica Bridges heads to Los Angeles for other opportunities.
The John Lennon Tribute show, “Just Imagine,” starring Tim Piper has left… suddenly and without notice it is gone. After just a few weeks into their three-month run, the show has disappeared. It was either a victim of the bad economy or legal issues about the use of the Beatles music…whatever the case, the show is gone.
Elvis impersonator Trent Carlini is moving from the big showroom at the Hilton one day a week to the Shimmer Cabaret for five days a week.
Zowie Bowie is heading back to the Red Rock Casino. The Red Rock is where it all got started for the duo. Chris Philips and Marley Taylor had been popular in Scottsdale, AZ for a long time before moving up to Vegas. Their success at Red Rock allowed them to move to several different venues before realizing that what they had at the Red Rock was the best thing for them. Their show re-launches the first weekend in Sept.
Mat Black, “Professional Bad Ass,” gets an opportunity to head his own show at the Harmon Theatre for a week while impressionist Larry G. Jones takes a vacation. Mat Black is characterized by his fairly raunchy and outrageous bits. It is a showcase and a test for the young comedian. If he does well, it could spawn a regular gig. The show is at 7:00 and is free with the purchase of a drink band.
Louis Anderson is moving out of the space at the Excalibur and into the comedy club at Palace Station. He is promising a family friendly, non-offensive show…as long as it is just him, because he is also promising appearances from a lot of his comedian friends…and he can’t promise that their content will be family friendly. I am a bit confused where that leaves the show…is it family friendly or not?
MGM Grand’s Crazy Horse Paris, the only sensual French cabaret in Las Vegas, shares the beauty and female form of art up close and personal with guests as they begin “meet and greets” with patrons Friday, July 30. The classically trained dancers will offer VIP “meet and greets” between the 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday evening performances…for a small fee.
July 30 marks 29 fabulous years at Bally’s Las Vegas for Donn Arden’s Jubilee!. To commemorate the anniversary, Bally’s Las Vegas is offering a special $29 ticket price to Nevada residents through Tuesday, August 31. One of the longest-running production shows on the famed Las Vegas Strip, Jubilee! features beautiful rhinestone-clad showgirls, lavish costumes, elaborate sets, world-renowned specialty acts, dynamic music, and graceful pageantry.
If you are interested in participating in the 2010 Las Vegas Showgirl Art Competition, the deadline for entries has been extended to August 10th. Go to: www.ShowgirlLegacy.com for more information. Rockhouse Bar & Nightclub, the only ultra-dive bar on the Las Vegas Strip, has introduced a delicious ultra-dive bar menu. Now Rockhouse revelers can sober up with mouthwatering grub after a game of beer pong or take a break from the dance floor to chow down on some chimichangas.
Rockhouse will provide finger-lickin’ bar fare to partygoers daily, from noon until 8 p.m. Guests can choose from a selection of menu items including hamburgers, fries, mini corndogs, chicken fingers and chimichangas while sipping an 80-ounce daiquiri from a souvenir guitar cup or slamming shots from a tire-swingin’ cocktail waitress.
The best laid-back place to party on the Las Vegas Strip, Rockhouse gives partygoers the ultimate nightlife experience – minus the “VIP” attitude. With a knockout lineup of gorgeous bartenders, bottle service that won’t break the bank, a walk-away daiquiri bar and casual dress code, it’s always the right time to party at Rockhouse.

With beautiful bartenders pouring drinks from the bar tops, playing in the giant bird cage and dangling from tire swings suspended from the ceiling, Rockhouse is the spot where the party never stops. Rockhouse is located on Las Vegas Blvd. in front of Imperial Palace, directly across from Caesars Palace in the middle of the Las Vegas Strip. Click Here for Las Vegas couponResort Fee Contest. BY Rick Garman
Speaking of contests, Harrah’s Entertainment is continuing to trumpet the fact that they are the only major company on The Strip that doesn’t charge those nefarious resort fees by giving away three year’s worth of the fees to a lucky winner.
Harrah’s started their big marketing push by bringing Planet Hollywood into the “No Resort Fee Zone” with a stunt that involved “Peepshow” star Holly Madison unveiling a pile of $12 million – the amount that Harrah’s says visitors have wasted in paying the fees at other hotels in the last month. Then they announced the sweepstakes that will give the big winner $21,900, equivalent to $20 a day for three years.
They even put up a Facebook site that will allow you to “join the cause” against resort fees. Expect to be marketed to by Harrah’s if you join it.
For those who haven’t been paying attention, most hotels in Vegas are now charging a daily fee of anywhere from $6 to $20 per day on top of the room rate for things like gym access, wireless Internet service, and more. You have to pay the fee regardless of whether or not you use any of that stuff. Public reaction has been almost completely negative (at least what I’ve heard from my readers) and so Harrah’s has siezed on that by banning the fees at all of their Vegas hotels including Harrah’s, Caesars Palace, Paris Las Vegas, Bally’s, Rio Las Vegas, Flamingo, Imperial Palace, and now Planet Hollywood.
Mob War. BY: Rick Garman.
There’s going to be a mafia war in Las Vegas next year, although one that will presumably not involve bloodshed. Two competing museums about the mob will be opening in the city – one at the Tropicana and the other in Downtown Las Vegas – both looking to examine the history of organized crime with a focus on how it affected Las Vegas.
The first one out of the gate will be the Las Vegas Mob Experience at the Tropicana, and although it isn’t set to open until late this year, a preview center is opening this week. It will showcase the attraction’s floor plan, artist renderings of its interior, as well as a representative selection of artifacts from its vast collection.
Meyer Lansky II will open the preview center and will show off some rare artifacts from his father, the mob boss who took control of The Flamingo in 1947 after Bugsy Siegel’s “unfortunate demise.”
The preview center will be open daily from 10am until 10pm at the Tropicana and if you are so inclined you can purchase an annual pass to the actual museum for 2011. For more info, visit the website.
The Las Vegas Museum of Law and Organized Crime is the official name of the place that is being informally known as The Mob Museum. It will be located in Downtown Las Vegas in the former courthouse building that was the site of the 1950-51 Kefauver Committee hearings on organized crime.
Due to open in Spring of 2011 the building will feature more than 16,000 square-feet of exhibition space that will showcase artifacts, interactive displays, and profiles of significant figures in organized crime. Among the proposed exhibits: The Legacy of the Mob, which will examine the mafia in today’s world; Notable Names in Mob History including Al Capone, Bugsy Siegel, John Gotti, and more; Mob Busters, about those who helped bring down major mafia figures; and Sin City, an in-depth look at the mob in Vegas. There will also be a retail store and event space in the 41,000 square-foot building. For more info, visit the website.
The Mob Museum has been championed by Mayor Oscar Goodman who was a lawyer for the mafia in the 1970s. He has spearheaded the fundraising drive, which has now approaching $9 million due to a recent grant from Centennial license plate fund.
So is there room in this town for two mafia museums? Guess we’ll find out next spring.
NORM: Mob Experience fuels conspiracies. From: The Las Vegas Review Journal.
The Las Vegas Mob Experience will feature some tantalizing organized crime links to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
Jay Bloom, managing partner of the attraction that opens at the Tropicana in December, said his group has acquired a videotaped death-bed confession of a 96-year-old mobster who told his family he had information about Kennedy’s death in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963.

Lady Luck revamp plans on hold.
Council delays decision on closed casino after mayor voices concern about pedestrian bridge. BY: Alan Choate/Las Vegas Review Journal.
Plans for revamping the Lady Luck casino were almost approved Wednesday, but Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman’s concerns about a pedestrian bridge and the Mob Museum held them up.
On a 6-1 vote, the City Council delayed action on the plans for two weeks so that Goodman can rest assured that changes to the walkway over Third Street will allow the Mob Museum building to be visible from the Fremont Street Experience.

Tim Arnold concerned for Pinball Hall of Fame reaching the next generation; no cross-promotion for mob attractions. BY: John Katsliomentes/Las Vegas Sun.
People are like pinball machines. Sometimes they go “Tilt,” and that happened recently when Pinball Hall of Fame owner Tim Arnold had to be re-set.
“I had a little incident with my ticker, I’m OK now. I had a patch put in, and I’m feeling great. Back to normal,” the 54-year-old Arnold said a couple of weeks ago during an interview for “Our Metropolis.” “I was sleeping, I woke up with chest pains and went to the hospital. They probed me and took pictures of me decided I was broken and fixed me.”
Sounds a lot like the way Arnold fixes the hundreds of machines in his pinball fortress.

The full Monti Rock, and then some.
Checking in with Las Vegas’ icon of inexplicable fame. BY: Ric Lax/Las Vegas Sun.
Monti Rock is not a has-been. Monti Rock was a has-been, decades ago, but now he’s something else, something transcendent. It’s hard to say what.
It’s easier to say what he’s done. Monti Rock (born Joseph Montanez Jr., in 1942) sold 7 million disco albums, appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson 84 times, and had a cameo in Saturday Night Fever.
But Rock’s not a singer or an actor — he admits this much. So what is he? A personality? A punch line? A parody? A VH1 Celebreality show waiting to happen? What does he do?

Thunder From Down Under celebrates nine years on The Strip. BY: Penny Levin.
This month, we at Australia’s Thunder From Down Under proudly celebrate nine years of headlining on the Las Vegas Strip, with eight of those at Excalibur where the 400-seat showroom was named in our honor.
This is a far cry from the days when we found ourselves at the Last Frontier, and all of us joined with Adam Steck, CEO of SPI Entertainment, co-owner of Thunder and producer of the show, crossing our fingers every night that we would fill the 80-seat venue.
Suddenly one Saturday night, we found ourselves scrambling to find chairs because we had 125 sold tickets. Everyone was so excited we went out for pizza after the show and probably spent the night’s profit!
Today, we are blessed to be playing to sell-out crowds (almost 800 ladies on a Friday or Saturday night), our brand is international and we have appeared on numerous national TV shows, including three appearances on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Wayne Brady Show and Gene Simmons’ Family Jewels (Gene stole the show when he mooned the showroom audience, but it was shaded out when it aired!).
Our most recent national TV appearance is tomorrow on Lifetime Network’s top-rated Drop Dead Diva. Four Thunder performers appear in a dream sequence with Brooke Elliott, the star of the show who plays Jane. The buffed blokes caused quite a stir on the set and were a favorite with all the ladies.
Donovan Lewis, David Moore, Adam Hughes and Leigh Hawira so impressed Diva creator and executive producer Josh Berman that, on the spot, he created a second dance number that will be seen on a Webisode and included in the Season 2 DVD.
This is great national publicity for the show and certainly helps draw attention to our Las Vegas and touring productions. Thunder stands for quality in the entertainment business and specifically in the adult male revue category.
We deliver sexy, sizzling fun for ladies (some couples and a few men attend) and have guests from 18 to 100 years old in the audience.
Thunder is a premiere choice for bachelorette parties, and we have happily provided memorable moments for thousands of brides-to-be and their wedding parties. The men of Thunder have charmed grandmothers, mothers and daughters.
AOL City Guide has awarded Thunder Best Adult Male Revue, and over the years, we have garnered dozens of awards, including having our Donovan Lewis named Sexiest Male Dancer in Las Vegas in a citywide contest.
Many of our guests visit time and again and have returned to see the show and their favorite performers during these nine years. Franny King, a beloved fan who is in her 80s and recently attended her 400th show, is always pleased to see Lewis, Marcus Deegan (our emcee), Marty Ammiott, Matthew Fardell and Dave Harris, who were with us at the Last Frontier and are still with the show, and she also adores the new dancers.
“We love being at the Excalibur and want to extend special thanks to hotel President Felix Rappaport, Mike Hartzell, director of entertainment, Brad Goldberg, vice president of marketing, and the entire Excalibur team for being so supportive,” said Steck, hinting that there is a major announcement on the horizon.

Planet Hollywood’s Pleasure Pool boosts attendance with weekly bikini contest. BY:Sonja Padgett/Las Vegas Review Journal.
Looking for a way to stand out in the Vegas pool party scene, managers at Planet Hollywood’s Pleasure Pool decided to try a weekly bikini contest.
Sure, other pool venues host them but few do it once a week, offering cash prizes to the winner and runner-up. And few lead up to a final event with a grand prize of $5,000 cash, a cocktail waitressing job and a professional photo shoot.
