It's really upsetting hearing about all these hidden fees and the holds on your credit cards for your stay. I'm just glad that when we checked in at the IP a couple weeks ago the girl asked if I would like to use a credit card for any "room incidentals." I told her that we didn't plan on having any and that was the end of it.

Hotel tax is now 12% strip, 14% downtown.

Funny you should mention that. I sent an email to casino marketing advising them to stop sending out misleading promos, lol. In this case, the resort fee isn't even buried in the fine print anywhere.

You're right. It didn't, hence my surprise and dismay. I didn't know that the TOT went up--probably because I was comped the last few times. It has been 12.5% here in San Diego for a few years now. Vegas was always a little bit behind us. Makes sense that strip and downtown have two different tax rates--they're in two different cities (as we learned in another thead).

That's the best way to do it, Hold 'Em, but, in many cases, you can't get any extra comps (F&B for instance), if you don't charge to your room.

I have to admit that with all the comps and stuff I never really looked at my bill that closely. It was less than my print out from when I booked the room, so I was happy.

I think we all need to be very careful over the next year when booking rooms. Make sure you get a printout of the total cost before you go and bring it with you. That way if they do try to charge you more, you have a very strong foot to stand on.

5 Years ago when I stayed at the Trop., they tried to hard sell you an upgrade at check-in. I expect things like this may become more common.

I'm quite sure you paid the tax increase. Since it is a city tax, it's not a hotel charge and the hotel has no obligation to "honor" the tax rate that was in effect at the time you booked or checked in. They're just following the law and collecting money on behalf of the city.

I hate to burst your bubble, but regardless of how many printouts you take with you, you have NO foot to stand on regarding the tax rate change.

Taxes are charged at the time the service is rendered, not when you make the reservation. The hotel can only quote the rate at the time the reservation is made but wil rightfully charge you the rate in effect when you are there.

I would not have tried to argue the tax. My post was really about all those other fees. I just wanted to also answer the tax rate question. The resort fee went from $5 a day when I booked to $11.95 when I got there. That I would have argued, but I think they took all the resort fees off my bill anyway. The TV in my room was showing them at $5 a day anyway, so I did not worry about it after that.

We stayed at a Harrah's property, Flamingo, on Oct. 18 -23. I just looked
at our bill after your post and there was no additional charges at all. I
called the Flamingo direct and made my reservations. There is not a
reservation fee or really anything except the food and shows we charged
back to our room. I would really question them on this.

Default How about if your room is comped?

Would there still be the resort fee/tax charged?

Lois,
I think some do and some don't for comped rooms.
Just find out at check-in.
I've seen it go both ways.
