Cool Memorial Day weekend change of venue!

It appears that Memorial Day weekend will be a busy one in Vegas, or at least downtown Vegas. We waited too late to book our usual rooms at The Golden Nugget, finding it was sold out. Several other places downtown were also sold out, so we are going to experiment with the newly remodeled Plaza. I've seen Youtube videos of the new casino, and it looks great! (The old one was scary bad nasty!) The videos of the rooms seem to be ok, at least clean and fresh, but still the same small room and tiny bathroom of old no matter how much lipstick you put on it. My wife and I always get adjoining rooms so each has his or her own bathroom, tv, dresser, safe, etc. When we open the door between the two rooms it will seem more spacious. The rooms we are used to at the Nugget are large, and with the door open between the two rooms it gives us the feel of a small suite.
I don't care... I'll still be in the most fun place in the world! I can make do with slightly more cramped housing. Beats staying in a cardboard box under the expressway overpass.
I'll post a trip report upon my return with a review of the Plaza's facelift.
We stayed there once several years ago and it was just ok, We've visited the casino in more recent years and watched it crumble into dank filth. Being the low rolling redneck that I am, my expectations are not all that high, and I will probably be offended if they have tried to be too fancy, trendy, upscale, and strip-like. Cleaner and brighter without losing the oldschool downtown charm is what I'm hoping for.

    Good advice for FREE!

    Wink The Plaza is awesome!

Hi, I saw your question and couldn't help but jump to respond. I am a Las Vegas local and I have stayed at the Plaza twice now since their renovation. It is a great hotel and one of the best values in Las Vegas. The room renovation is very nice. They gutted everything except for the bathroom door (which is bizarre). The room has a very nice fresh clean look to it. As for the casino, it has been completely gutted. They have a ton of new food outlets. Everything from a full fast food court with Subway, McDonalds, coffee shop, etc. to great restaurants such as Hash House A Go Go, Island Sushi (my favorite), and the former Mayor Oscar Goodman's steakhouse. It is a great location with a perfect view of Fremont Street.

A couple words of caution, if you get a room facing Fremont Street you will hear loud music playing until around 3am, so if you plan on going to sleep early this is not the room for you despite the view. It you want something quiet get something in the South Tower, not the North Tower. Also, the wall are very thin, so be careful about having a loud conversation if you want privacy.

Thanks for the Plaza info. Dorene and I will be having dinner at Oscar's in July. There is also a rotating banner at the forums offering rooms at the Plaza for $29.00 a night.
