Thread: downtown

  1. Default downtown

coming to Vegas and Rio on 24th but looking to stay downtown for 2-3 nights downtown (21-23) before going to Rio. I know the Nugget is probably the best but really stuck on some where else. The Nugget pretty much pricing themselves out of my range.

Fitz and 4 Queens cuz of location and price is kinda right. Main Street and California because of price and certainly El Cortez for the price of regular rooms and cabana rooms but is it safe to walk late at night back and forth from Fremont street to hotel. I am overlooking the Golden Gate?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

No worries, Kev. I think you'll get more responses to this post, though. If you were coming in September, I'd say to check out The Plaza. Their newly remodeled rooms look beautiful and they're also remodeling the casino. Should be one of the nicer joints downtown, when it re-opens.

What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. What happens at an ELV slot tournament gets photographed and posted!

You'll be just fine on Fremont (and even E. Fremont) if you do choose the El Cortez. You have a lot of choices & price ranges. The El Co gives a lot of bang for the buck. It's not the nicest, but worth taking a look at.

The Fitz... is okay "hotel wise" & "casino wise".

MSS... is a popular choice for many. Diane (boardmember from HI) stays there now and then, perhaps she can shed some light.

Getting back to walking around... you may find a few folks scattered about that are "down on their luck" lets say. But, usually they leave you alone. There is a sidewalk/courtyard/pedestrian thing that links DT to El Cortez that's just north of Fremont Street East itself. It's well lit, lined with trees, and security cameras.

The 4 queens is pretty solid value wise (as i'm sure you know).
You dont always get what you pay for... but you always pay for what you get.

Although it was only for one night, I really enjoyed my stay at Main Street Station. The room was a decent size and nicely decorated. Perhaps not as plush as some of the Strip places, but comfortable, clean and pleasant. I also really like the casino there.

I wouldn't worry too much about location. Everything downtown is so close together, it doesn't take long to walk from any location to another. Even the El Cortez. I don't find the walk there creepy at all.

    Kevin,
We have stayed at Main Street Station off and on for the last 12 years. It is our home away from home. The rooms are okay. It does not take that long from the casino up to your room so it makes it nice after a long day of gambling and drinking to not have to go too far. If you do stay at MSS ask for a high floor. The higher floor rooms have refrigerators in them. No pool at MSS though. Can use the pool at california but it is not that great.

My husband stayed at the California his last Trip and said it was okay. They recently remodeled and he had a flat screen tv and a refrigerator in his room.

We stayed at Fremont last September. out of the 3 Boyd hotels I would not recommend Fremont. The rooms are well worn.

We stayed at the Golden Gate 3 years ago during slot tourney week. The rooms are actually okay there. The beds were comfortable. Our room overlooked Fremont Street experience and it was not all the noisey at night. so that is another option for you. As an added bonus there is a coffee maker in the room!

I checked and the boyd properties are very reasonably priced for the time you are there $36 Sun to thurs and jumps up to $55 and $65 for Friday and Saturday nights. If you have a B connected card rooms are even cheaper!!!

    Good luck
    Diane

Cool the El has it's upside...

The absolute lowest roulette limits I've found anywhere! 25 cent chips, with $1 minimum per spin! Drink service is pretty good there.
Low limit slots tend to be tight, but the dollar slots are pretty friendly.
One drawback is that almost all casino employees are more fluent in languages other than English than they are in English, so it's sometimes hard to understand what is being said. It also seems that when there is a dicrepancy or dispute, the language problem gets worse...possibly a planned tactic. Just watch yourself, I've seen some weird stuff happen there, and the player is usually the one that loses out when there is any problem or dispute over what happens on a game.
On a happy note, the recent improvements to the eastern section of Fremont makes the short trek away from the canopy much less scary than it was even a few years ago. There are less vacant properties, and the doormen/bouncers at the new places that have opened are pretty much close enough together that you are under supervision the whole stroll. I like it! Although I always stay at the Golden Nugget, I spend most weekday afternoons at El Cortez, because I can have fun and drink a few beers without losing much!

    Good advice for FREE!

What popps said. Area around the ElCo is really picking up, between the old clinic and the Vanguard lounge across the street. If you like gyros and other MidEast food, stop by kabob korner. My only disappointment with the ElCo is the diner. The Flame may be better tho. My all time downtown fave dinner is Hugo's Cellar at the 4 Queens.

I agree, Hugo's Cellar is excellent.

Also at the El Cortez, I saw (but didn't try) them offer "room service" at the slots.
