La Montagna Italian Bistro, 4864 W. Lone Mountain Road, features straightforward Italian cuisine with a homemade touch.

"The restaurant business is our passion," says Gina Sedita, who with her husband, Giovanni, and brother James Muscaglione and his wife, Cheryl, own the restaurant that opened last month.

The family previously owned three restaurants in New Jersey, but moved to Las Vegas last year with no intentions of opening a restaurant. Still, they couldn't stay away from the business.

"We're restaurant babies," Gina Sedita says, explaining that her family and her husband's family all have backgrounds in the business. Gina and Giovanni even met in a pizzeria in New Jersey.

"This is just like a mom and pop restaurant," Gina says. "You walk in and it's unpretentious. We're giving out four-star food but in a more relaxed atmosphere."

Giovanni, who grew up in Italy, is the restaurant's chef, and makes everything from scratch, Gina says. "It's completely the way we were brought up eating."

Soup leads off the menu with choices including pasta fagioli ($3.50), French onion ($3.50) and tortellini brodo, meat-filled, ring-shaped pasta in a light chicken broth ($3).

Salads include mixed field greens ($4.95), garden salad ($3.95), Caesar ($5.25) and chef's salad ($5.95).

Among the appetizers are sautéed New Zealand mussels in a light tomato broth ($5.95); eggplant rollatini ($5.95); clams oregenata ($5.95); and stuffed portabella mushrooms with crumbled sausage, peppers, onions and Mozzarella ($5.95).

Big sellers among the entrées are chicken Vesuvio, fillets of chicken sautéed with hot peppers, mixed mushrooms and roasted potatoes in a balsamic sauce ($9.95); chicken scarparello, chicken sautéed with sausage, sweet peppers, mushrooms, garlic and spices ($8.95); chicken montagna with sautéed mushrooms, artichoke hearts and melted Mozzarella ($9.95); pasta bow ties and broccoli featuring chicken, sun-dried tomatoes, broccoli, extra virgin olive oil and garlic ($7.95); and penne vodka ($7.95).

La Montagna also offers pizza, including Hawaiian with pineapple, ham and cheese ($14.95), meat lovers with sausage, pepperoni and ham ($15.95), veggie with peppers, onions and olives ($15.95); and the boardwalk, with sausage, peppers and onions ($15.95).

Hot sandwich selections include meatball ($5.50), sausage parmigiana ($5.50), and pepper and egg ($4.95). Cold sandwiches include the Italiano, with ham, salami and provolone ($4.95); the Brooklyn, with Mozzarella, prosciutto and sun-dried tomatoes ($5.95); and the Park Avenue, with turkey, American cheese and honey-Dijon ($4.95).

Seating 35, La Montagna is open for lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Dinner hours are 5-9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 5-10 p.m. Fridays. The restaurant is open Saturdays from noon to 10 p.m., closed Sundays except for private parties of 20 or more.
