Has anyone eaten at the Tropicana? If so, what restaurants, and is it worth taking the shuttle from the Gold Coast there?

I haven't ate at the Tropicana or Gold Coast Restaurants. Why are you thinking of going to the GC to eat? Some of the MGM Casino restaurants are running $29-39 unlimited eat all day buffet specials. You won't have to leave the strip.

If you are planning to go to the GC just walk from GC to the RIO. Lots of restaurants at the RIO.

I am staying at the Gold Coast and they have a shuttle to the Orleans and Tropicana.

I had the buffet years ago and it was the worst in the history of going to buffets in Las Vegas.

I also had dinner at The Steakhouse, that is now closed and reopened under anothe name with my son. He got sick after the meal and I got sick when I got back to my room.

Haven't been there for a while..probably never will go back, so things may be improved.

I ate at the Orlean's Buffet about 3 years ago. It was doable but nothing to write home about.

Also the GC/Orlean's Shuttle doesn't run very late. Be sure to have proof of having reservations at the GC because the shuttles fill up quickly and seats are given 1st to people staying at their Casinos. The Rio/Harrah's Shuttles tend to run later. If GC strands you on the strip head to the nearest Harrah's shuttle stop and ride to RIO then walk to GC. If the shuttles have stopped running get a taxi at the Flamingo for the cheapest fare.

I would not eat anything at the Tropicana...however..if you are staying at the GC and take the shuttle over there it's a short walk to either the MGM or New York New York both of which have some excellent restaurants. The ones I would recommend would depend on what type of food and your price range.
Also , if you like prime rib I would recommend the Prime Rib Loft at the Orleans, it's a great value.

Going a bit off on a tangent.... but, i've had 3 meals @ the Orleans 'cafe'. Two were very mediocre. The third was their 11.95 prime rib special - this was VERY GOOD. Wonder if it's the same 'stuff' from upstairs?

Matthew I think it probably is!!
I have always had the theory that the Coast hotels only buy one kind of Prime Rib and you pay accordingly for where you eat it!
Now it's still a good value at the Prime Rib Loft because I believe it's $14.95 with a salad and choice of side included. You can get a fun table near the edge that overlooks the casino and watch those dice roll as you eat or take a more intimate booth but atmosphere is nice in that restaurant. The buffet at Orleans serves a regular roast beef BUT the buffet at the Suncoast serves the prime rib....and I am pretty sure it's the same one.
They also have a much fancier restaurant at the Suncoast on the second floor
called SC Prime. It's your basic meat and seafood...they have the prime rib there as well but it's much more expensive and doesn't include sides. Still, my bet it's the same one seeing as how their basic one is good quality...no one would be disappointed.
That restaurant is really nice inside with an expansive view so I guess that's what's you paying for...or the fact you can add crab legs or a lobster tail to any meal for $10 bucks there...and they are good.....but your average dinner plate is upward of $25
So I guess it just depends on which atmosphere you choose to eat it in!!

re: Trop Dining.

If you read Steve's most recent newsletter, there is mention that Trop has opened a couple of new restaurants. So it may offer better choices than in recent years.

Well, I spent 6 hours at a taping of Let's Make a Deal today. When I left at 4 p.m., I was starving. I hadn't eaten all day, because of going to the show. As I walked past the Island buffet, I thought to myself, "should I be brave and try this?" But after remembering what Steve said about getting sick, and looking at the selections, or lack there of, I decided it was a resounding "NO!" I only counted 6 people in there. That speaks volumes too!

I saw a "now open" sign for Havana Go Go. So, I figured it must be a relatively new place, and I gave it a try. I had a cuban grilled pannini, and it was very good. Roast pork, ham, swiss, mustard, and dill pickle. $9 for the sandwich, and $2 for the medium soda. Very reasonable for a Vegas casino. My only negative comment would be that they grilled the pickle too. It might just be me, but I'm not into hot, soggy pickles. The clerk told me they've been open for 3.5 weeks.

I'd give them an 8 out of 10.

Vegasbabe, I don't want to hijack this thread, but I would really like to hear about your Let's Make a Deal experience - have you written about it someplace else in the forum?

Deciding whether to go for it on a NOvember trip - 6 hours out of a Vegas day seems like alot!

yes, on the showthread. And somebody else reviewed their experience on the trip reports thread, I believe.
