Has anyone ever used the $20.00 tip trick to get an upgrade on a free room? I've never tried it because I don't like to look a gift horse in the mouth.

We have never tipped to get a better room. We just ask. We are not in the room that much anyway, so as long as it is comfortable and clean, we are happy. If we ask for a strip view, we always get it unless they are full. I have found that the best way to get an upgraded room is to check in late. They will give you whatever they have left. Once, we got a two room suite with huge bath and jacuzzi and separate shower when we checked in at Midnight at Harrahs-view was of the east side mountains.
If you want a big room, stay at the Rio. Their rooms are 600 sq. ft. Some of the decor is dated but the newly renovated rooms are nice. They have a fridge, 32" TV, coffee pot, couch and large closet.

A few years ago we had a free room at the Bellagio for two nights and tipped the check-in hostess $20 to get a fountain view upgrade instead of a pool view. At the time the fountain view rooms were going for $50 more per night so we thought this was a pretty good deal.

i've said it before and i'll say it again--slipping a tip into the palm of a desk clerk or maitre d' is de classe and very 1940s movie-ish. just ask for an upgrade. if they are available, they're either free or have a nominal extra fee, like $10 - $25. in vegas, if you don't ask for it, you don't get it.

Hubby & I decided to take our son to Vegas for his birthday in March (his BIG dream!). Now 2 of his friends are also going for their first time too. We have the airline reservations made but not the hotel yet. We're going to try & find the cheapest accomodations we can so the 3 of them can have their $$ for gambling, dining, etc. rather than spending a lot on a hotel room. We've got the Players Advantage card & get offers from the Flamingo, Harrah's & Rio. We've been staying at the Flamingo for the past 3 years. So the question is....there's 5 of us going, the guys really don't care where they stay as long as it's cheap...any suggestions?

I might suggest: Sams Town; Imperial Palace; Stardust; or someplace downtown: El Cortez, Fitzgeralds, or Four Queens. Just from experience, those can all be very reasonable in rates. Good Luck!

If you have a Harrahs card and regularly stay there, you might try getting rooms for all of you there. Last year at Christmas, we had a room reserved for ourselves for 3 nights on a coupon; our son decided to go out for one day. I made the reservation for him and told them the situation. They let us have a room for him in the Mardri Gras tower for $50.00. Flamingo might do the same since Harrahs now owns them and by March all of the Harrahs and Caesars properties will be combined. (I recently called Bally's about reservations and they aked for either my Harrahs or Caesars card, so all the properties may already be doing the same thing.) Doesn't hurt to ask.
But if your son and his friends don't care where they stay, Circus Circus:eek:
is always running cheap specials. Sometimes for $29 a night. Check their website.
