Does anyone know why when comping a room using the Total Rewards Card in Atlantic City there is a 13 dollar tax that must be paid and when comping a room through Total Rewards in Vegas it is free..no extra tax or charges?

When Staying at Trump properties we pay only $7.00 . Harrahs must be a little more greedy charging you more. Noticed this is your first post welcome to this site.

Auggie, know Nadda, zilch, "0" about Atlantic City taxes on comped rooms, sorry but welcome to the board. Hope to see more of your posts. It's a great place to get info and it's fun at the same time.

I know nothing about Atlantic City. But thinking about this, it probably has something to do with state laws. My guess is that New Jersey requires you to pay tax on the value of the room if you paid for it. Just a guess, though.

First of all, welcome aboard, Auggie. There are a couple of things I can tell you. Part of the charge is the State of New Jersey and part of the charge is the local municipality. Transient occupancy tax can differ from city to city within the same state. It is called transient occupancy tax since you have to stay over 90 days to be considered a resident (in San Diego, it's 30 days) and to be tax exempt.
From what I've seen, it looks like NJ charges both sales tax and occupancy tax. In Las Vegas, like San Diego, the TOT is a function of the room rate. Thus, if the room rate is zero, the tax doesn't exist. It sounds like AC charges you just for showing up (that isn't real neighborly, IMHO) whether or not the hotel does. I'm inclined to agree with Charlie in that they are charging tax on the value of the room, hence the difference between Trump and Harrah's. Needless to say, these monies do not go into the hotel's coffers--they get paid monthly to the state/local government.

I frequently stay in comped rooms at The Borgata in AC and I have experienced the same thing - the room rate is normally several hundred dollars a night so I don't mind paying such a small amount to stay there "comped". I have recently started playing much more at Harrah's both in AC and LV and have been getting some good comp offers so I am going to give Harrah's Resort (next to the Borgata) a shot on an upcoming AC trip - I don't think being charged a few bucks a night to stay at a great hotel and have a good time is so bad - because the alternative is to be charged that same amount of tax PLUS the regular nightly rate on top of it!!

In addition to the taxes on comped rooms, A.C. charges to park in their parking garages, unlike Vegas. Parking Garage fees run about $5, but can sometimes be free during promos (Trump Marina) or if you have higher level of players cards.
With no players card, rates can jump as high as $20 to park on some busy weekends!
But back to taxes on comped rooms, as others have said, I would rather pay $9 (what I pay for my comped room at Resorts) than the full price for a room. I'm gonna gamble, anyway, so I might as well get the room for free! :p
