I came upon the LV Taxi Authorities March official report. It's interesting that the number of trips are down but average revenue per trip is up!
Screams........ LONG HAUL....TUNNEL.....SCENIC VIEW..!!!!!

Yes, there are so many newbies or people who don't read the boards - they don't know that they are getting tunneled or long-hauled. They have no earthly idea what the average cost of a trip should be.

One must also suppose that it might have something to do with the fact that, a year ago this time, gas was careening toward $4 per gallon and fares were increased to compensate for that expense. Since gas is down and fares haven't decreased (why is that, do you think?--rhetorical question), it would be logical to assume that this is a second variable in that happy windfall.
I hate to say this, but if you get long hauled and you report it, i dont think there going to do a frickin thing. Yea they will tell you they will get right on it, but the truth of the matter is, the long hauler is the one who brings in the money, and that's all they care about. The reason i have come to this conclusion is because there doing it now more than ever, so obviously there is no fear on there part of reprimand.

I didn't get long hauled in Las Vegas, but I did get cheated in Columbus, Ohio when I got home. I live about 2 miles from the airport and that short ride, the last time I took a cab there cost $6.00. This time it should have been $12.50, but when we got to my house the guy pushed a button and showed me a fare of $17.60. I'm sure he locked in the highest rate he had for the day and showed it to me to pay. He said that was the total with tax. $5.00 in tax? Come on! In Las Vegas I would have questioned it more, but here at home I just wanted to go in my house and go to bed. I'm still mad about it though- mad that I was too tired to argue- mad that I let him get away with it- and mad I didn't write his number down to report him. It was 1 am- I was supposed to be home two hours earlier. I'm not surprised at all that people are trying to rip others off. It really makes me sad that there are so many unscrupulous people in our country. Did you hear about the lotto clerks telling people they didn't win and then stealing their tickets and cashing them in?

I have not been to Vegas in about 3 years. Can someone tell me what I should be telling the driver? My husband usually does this but he is not going on this trip. How much should it cost so I know I am not getting swindled? I am asking about the trip from the airport to the Strip. Thanks!

Whatever you do don't let the driver know you're a novice about the trip from the airport to your hotel.
After you get in the cab and have told the driver your destination be sure to say "No Tunnel". One driver responded to me..."Freeway faster" I responded "I have made many trips to LV and I know the quickest way to ....... , the freeway is not the best way and I know what the average fare costs."
Once in the cab try to lighten up the conversation saying things like:
"So glad to be back in LV. I always stay at .........."
"It seemed busier at the airport today then last month."
This is a link to the LV Taxicab Authority site that gives you an average trip cost. There are many variables such as road construction, day and time of arrival, red lights.

If I get stuck in slow moving traffic I have jokingly said "Why don't you turn the timer off, your boss is rich enough, I'd rather give you the tip then your boss the money."

It depends on where on the strip but $10-$15 is an average. Also you can call the taxi authority and they will tell you the typical rate. Kep in mind that if you hit a lot of red lights it will increase the fare some.

I stay at the LUXOR.
Every year it is about $15.
The first two years, I took a shuttle, big mistake. The shuttle is about $10, and very slow. If there are two of you, the taxi is cheaper and much faster.

The above is good advise. If you have never been to Las Vegas before, or have only been there a few times, and the cab driver asks you if you have ever been to Vegas before, tell him you have been there around 40 times. Like LVloverNana also advised, give the cabbie the impression that you were also in Las Vegas just a month ago.
Always remember to say, "No tunnel!"

The year I took the shuttle to the Luxor was a bad decision because it was one of the last hotels on the trip. It took muc longer than I thought it would considering the airport is close.

Bill, don't you know that's "Shuttle Law" - kind of like Murphy's law. Whichever hotel you're going to will be the last stop! It happens to us every time, but Mr. Cheap will only spring for a cab on the way BACK to the airport.
The reason why we take a cab to the airport is because we almost missed a flight one time. We got on the wrong shuttle and after sitting outside the Stardust for 20 minutes I asked, learned it was a tour shuttle instead, and we ran like hell for the taxi stand around front, making it to the airport just under the gun.
T-7 for us.

Hi Legalios
With it being two of you, does the taxi really cost more? I thought the shuttle was around 8-10 dollars a person.
I luck out in that the luxor is so close to the airport it does not cost much for the taxi. I fly from BWI on the east coast, so after 5 hours in the air, I just want to get to the hotel and there is very little waiting for a taxi.
June 24th here I come.:D:D:D

Lois,
That shuttle is a nightmare - the first several times I took the shuttle because I did not know better - Memorial Day weekend, 2005 I was traveling to the Wynn to give it a shot since it had just opened and I was excited to stay there. Not only was The Wynn the very last stop (it took about two hours from the airport because of the holiday weekend traffic) but the driver refused to turn to go into the Wynn driveway and made me get out in the parking lot of the Frontier (where the next to last passenger had been dropped off) and I had to drag my bags down the block, cross the strip and drag the luggage up to the entrance. I know I should have reported him, but the previous trip had been my first ever to Vegas and there were so many calamities I refused to start off another Vegas trip with more insanity because I almost never went back to Vegas again because the first trip was so bad. Luckily that was the only bad part of the trip and that was the LAST time I used one of those shuttle services. I believe the previous poster is correct - it would be just about the same for a taxi as it would be for two in a shuttle and even if it is a couple of dollars extra, it is worth every penny to get a private taxi to take you right to your hotel and get your trip started on the right foot!
T-5 for me!! YES!!!!

This coming trip in August I'll be telling the cabbie "No Tunnel" as April when we stayed at the Palms the cabbie took the tunnel that longhauled us. In january the cabbie was good and didn't. But from now on I will get used to that phrase.

Thanks

Would I have to mention "no tunnel" if I am going to Mandalay Bay?
I have always said it before, but I always stayed at Harras or Mirage.

I have never said "no tunnel", and stay at Luxor. Never been more than $15 before tip, and never been tunneled.

You should. If a taxi is going to longhaul you, it's not going to matter at what hotel you are staying.
