I headed to the Peppermill for breakfast on a Monday morning. I know it’s Mikey’s usual morning there, but I also know he’s out of town, so I just have to make do without. And I’m better off, since I planned on ordering something he recommended against (rightfully). Felt like I was sneaking around behind his back, but I had to see for myself. It was about 9:00, not too crowded, and I was able to get right in. As on my last trip, I opted to sit at the counter. I like to watch all the activity going on in and around the kitchen. I’m always amazed at how much the workers there hustle.
So, for breakfast, ordered three favorites of mine. Favorites in general, not necessarily Peppermill favorites. I got the biscuits and gravy ($7.25), a side of bacon ($4.75), and a side of hash browns ($3.50). And another iced tea ($2.50). If someone ever comes out with a study that says plain, unsweetened iced tea is bad for you, I’ll probably only have a couple months to live. Mikey warned me against the biscuits and gravy, and Hoya warned me not to get them anywhere outside of the South, but I risked it, and was deservedly disappointed. Sorry guys, I won’t doubt you again. The biscuits where soft/soggy under the gravy. I like biscuits that are crispy around the edges, and hold up to the gravy. There were not/did not. The hash browns were OK. I like mine really crispy, and these were just slightly browned. They could have used a little more seasoning too. And they were a lot flatter than you get at most places, almost shaved, and in the shape of fettuccini, only a lot shorter. The bacon was good though – maybe 6 slices of thick, crispy bacon.
While I was there, I finally got to witness the fruit plate – it’s as large as people say. Also got a view of the pancakes, which look like a challenge to a serious eater. And they advertise 10-egg omelets, which I can’t even imagine. Although I was disappointed in the biscuits and gravy, I wasn’t expecting much there. I still enjoy going to The Peppermill. For me, it has the same feel as Vegas as a whole – lots of activity, always things going on, a good crowd, and lots to look at.
