Just got back from 4 days in Vegas and was able to play in three hold-em tournaments with disastrous results.
#1 - Binions - They run Hold-em tournaments at 10am, 2pm and 8pm daily. $60 buy-in; a $10 "Bonus Buy" for additional chips; and one optional rebuy for $40. They had about 80 players on Friday and we were down to about 40 when I looked down and saw A-K offsuit. I moved all-in and there was one caller. He turned over K-10 offsuit, and I had a BIG lead going into the flop. He caught a ten on the flop, and this pair held up, knocking me out.
#2 - Binions - The following day I was back and we were down to about 30 players from a start of over 100. Again, I look down to see A-K offsuit and moved all-in. A woman across from me called and turned over A-Q. Again, I am in the lead. She does not improve on the flop or after the turn, BUT catches a queen on the river and I'm knocked out AGAIN.
#3 - Harrahs - They have a daily 11am tournament with a $30 buy in; with $10 additional bounus buy and a $40 optional rebuy. I built a huge stack, up to about 14000 in chips and a woman across from me moves all in. I looked at my hole cards and see TWO ACES. I moved all in and cleared out the rest of the field, but one other guy called. Three of us went to the flop. He turns over garbage and she turns A-3 of spades. She catches one spade on the flop, and at this point I am a 9-1 favorite to win the hand. She then goes runner - runner to catch the spade flush and takes about 2800 in chips from me.
#4 - Harrahs - LESS THAN ONE HOUR LATER... - A guy moves all in with about 19000 in chips, and I again look down to see a pair of aces. I call with about 13000 in chips and a woman to my left calls the all-in as well. There is about 39000 in the pot, he turns over K-Q of spades and she turns over Q-3 of clubs. AGAIN, dominating before the flop. Two blanks and a queen come on the flop, but I am still in good shape. Not for long. A king comes on the turn, giving him two pair (kings and queens) and he improves on the river with another queen for a full house.
I played solid, agressive poker, getting all my money in before the flop, ahead on ALL FOUR ALL INS, and lost them all. Oh, well, that's poker. And, I'll be back!
