Trip Report – Oct 16-20. There were three ladies, my mother, sister Kathy and I. It rained two of the days and that was a bummer. Because of the rain, we rode the monorail a couple of times. I was not impressed because of all the walking you had to do to get to the station. We also had to check out the Wynn Casino. That place is unbelieveable. I window-shopped through the stores. The casino is huge. Steve Wynn even has his own megabucks slot machine game.
Hotel: We stayed at Harrah’s. We had already made reservations for two rooms because my friend was originally planning to go, but she had to cancel. Kathy and Mom stayed in one room and had two nights comped. I had three nights comped and stayed in my own room. I did end up using my comp points to pay for the other night. I had a very nice room in the Carnaval tower with a view of Caesar’s Palace. Even on the 23rd floor, you can hear the noise from the Carnaval Court. Of course I didn’t stay in the room much so the noise didn’t bother me.
Shows: We love the shows in Vegas, so we always try to see a few while there. On our first night, we went to the Gold Coast and got tickets to see Forever Plaid. It was a good show with lots of songs from the 50s. The show is about 4 guys on their way to their first gig as a group. They are killed in a car accident by a bus carrying a group of girls to see the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show. The quartet gets one opportunity to come back to Earth to perform the show they never got to do in life. They sang songs such as Love is a Many Splendored Thing, Three Coins in the Fountain, Rags to Riches, Anniversary Song, Chain Gang. My parents always listened to music so I knew all the old songs.
We found out that Elton John was playing that week, so I went on-line and got tickets to see him. It was a wonderful show. We were in the 1st Mezzanine and I thought these were great seats. He sang all my favorites and I felt like I was in high school again. The show was over 90 minutes long and he ended with my favorite Elton hit, Your Song.
The third show we saw was Clint Holmes at Harrah’s. This was the third time for my mom and me. He is a great entertainer and we enjoy his show each time we see it. The show changes some through the years. The latest change is that his sister has joined his show and sings a few numbers with him. He also talks about his recent experience with colon cancer. We had front row seats and this is a fairly small showroom. My mom was thrilled that he came down into the audience and kissed her hand.
Food: Most of our food was comped on this trip. The only meal we paid for was at the Todai Sushi Buffet. I don’t eat raw fish, but there are lots of other good Japanese food as well as some cooked sushi. Of course, my mom was in heaven at this place. She loves sushi and enjoyed their vast selections. I enjoyed the tempura and stir fried dishes. Also, I love their little bite-size desserts. We had the Paris breakfast buffet one morning. This has got to be the best breakfast buffet in Vegas. There is such a large, varied selection. We had buffets at the Gold Coast, Bally’s, and Mirage. We also ate at Harrah’s Cafe and the Flamingo Cafe.
Gambling: I was a big loser in this area, but I had a blast playing penny video slots. I tried many times to win a million dollars on the Millioni$er slots, but even though I got the random bonus several times, I couldn’t get that third guy to show up. It was fun trying though. I had to try all the new games, like Zorro and Agassi. They are progressive machines, like Fort Knox, and the bonus seems to come up pretty often. I also played a Jackpot Party progressive that was fun but I hate when the party pooper comes up on your first pick. I didn’t play it, but I saw a 100 line penny machine called Stinkin Rich. I also played some fun quarter slots that had bonus game, like Mad Martian and Quack Shot. I thought that the Gold Coast and Orleans had the best selection of slots.
We came home on Thursday and I was exhausted from getting little sleep in Vegas. We did bring home good memories of the great shows we saw and the fun and excitement of being in Vegas. Now, I get to dream again until my next trip which is in January.
