I just heard on the news that the Sportsbook at the Hilton was robbed this morning at 6:15 am. They were held by 2 guys with handguns, and their faces were covered. It's believed that there may have been a 3rd guy in the getaway car. Although not at all confirmed, it is believed that they got away with Hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Oh my gosh... scary stuff. Even the 'run' to the back door is a good jaunt. Why do people take chances like this (especially with CASINO SECURITY).

To be honest with you, personally, I kinda doubt if it was hundreds of thousands of dollars. I would think that most of the cash is kept in the main cashier cage. The security guards would've made a cash pick up. Besides it was 6:00 am in the morning on a week night. It's not like it was during the Super Bowl weekend.

But then again, I can be either completely misinformed (it was never confirmed on the news) and/or completely naieve.

For what it's worth...here is the link for the LVJR (newspaper) for the hold up.

I got a breaking news email from KLAS this morning to say that the robbers got away with $500,000. This really is frightening. Anyone seeing this happen would be absolutely traumatized. I know I would be anyway!

I knew i wouldnt stand still... i may try to stop them.

I guess i'm not a person who FREEZES (to go off topic).. so i'd either do that, or run the other way.

I really hope you would run away Matthew, I'd hate to think what would happen if you tried to stop them! :(

It really is scary though. It's the kind of thing that you really think belongs in the movies. Thankfully it doesn't happen that often or I'd spend my time in Vegas OUTDOORS!

If you are ever in that unfortunate predicament you would be better off running the other way - your life is worth a heck of a lot more than $500,000

This is an article that will be in todays newsletter.

It seems highly unlikely to me that there was that much cash or even ANYONE in the Superbook at 6:15 AM. The Supervisors don't get there until 7am and the book doesn't open until 8am.

yeah, something smells fishy here. I can't believe that there would be that much cash readily available, without having to call a supervisor. Calling and waiting for a supervisor would slow the thieves down, or maybe deter the theft completely. Haven't they ever heard of a drop safe? Don't they have a button to push to alert security they're being robbed? Heck, my cashiers aren't allowed to keep enough $$$ in their registers to break a hundred dollar bill! Something needs to be revamped at the Hilton.

As for misterkeno chasing them down--are you nuts! I think I'd run the opposite way if guns were involved. I had a gun pulled on me a few years ago, during a liquor theft, and it was a life changing event. I pretty much said "take what you want", got a license plate number, and left the cops handle it!

Well, i know i wouldnt run after them in a pursuit.

I guess what i meant to say... is that i dont just freeze & find myself 'unable to move' -- like some of us do in life (or in infrequent dreams). We've all been there.

I've been running this thru my mind... say if there was robber, i may randomly stick my foot out so he trips. Then, another good samritan would grab the weapon. It's all teamwork.

Or, i could throw a drink in the robbers face juuuust as he's about to turn around and run -- a diversion of sorts. This would drown the robber as the LVH often has watered-down drinks.

Now, i'm not an action hero... nor do i want to make it sound like i'm foolish. But, you think about stuff. Life makes you think. Scenarios of great tension:

i.e. the robbery at the LVH sportsbook:confused:

Life also makes you think about things you just cant explain:

i.e. the ice is always clear & perfect at the casino, the stuff out of my fridge is a clouded white:confused:

yeah, I've thought of tripping the villains too. But with my luck, they'd fall down, roll over, and shoot me anyway.

I fear these types of crimes may be more frequent as the economy worsens. But I still say something smells fishy with this one.

As for the ice thing--can't explain it. You're on your own with that one! Actually, go visit the people at the new ice bar at Mandalay Place. Maybe they can explain it! Everything looked perfectly clear there too, when they featured it on the news yesterday.

misterkeno,

All that sounds great on paper or when you are sitting there and fantasizing about how you would take down the thugs....but let me tell you that it is a whole lot different when you are actually staring down the barrell of a real live gun in a serious situation.

Living in NY this has happened to me three times - once a guy on the subway held a gun to my head and demanded everything I had - there were other people on the train and I told him to forget it and walked away from him (yes a foolish move but I was a teenager and fearless and would never do that same thing today!!); another time I was on a subway train and two thugs entered the car and drew guns - I was sitting right next to the door the entered from and as soon as I saw them headed to the opposite end of the car I dashed between cars and ran through the subway cars to get away from the incident. It turns out they had been watching a guy with thick gold chains on the platform and were after him to rob him; and the third time I was mugged in my own neighborhood (which is a very good and normally safe area) fairly early in the evening at gunpoint by three armed teen thugs. Even though I quickly and willingly gave them everything I had (all of $40) they still held my arms behind my back and smashed my face into a metal railing (luckily no lasting physical scars but the emotional impact stays with you for life - believe me you are a lot more cautious after you have been through an experience like that. Until you actually live the experience (and I sincerely hope you never do) you really cannot say what you will do or how you will act.

what are the odds on a heist at a vegas sportsbook? sounds like an inside job.theres alot no one is saying.maybe they placed a futures bet on obama and wanted thier money back.lol.what a crazy planet this is.

jr, those are certainly MAJOR things... i'm happy you're alive (of course). Good insight.

Roxy - that's what i'm starting to think also.

1) a stick-up
2) cash handed over
3) the guys leave
4) 50 seconds later.... THEN... the ticketwriter informs a supervisor?

Again..I repeat..there is no one at the Spotsbook at 6:15am. I have been there that early and the place is closed.

This area is the most unsecured area in the entire casino with a side door exit that in all my times at the LVH has never had a guard anywhere near it. It is less than 100 feet from the Sportsbook main windows and actually makes for an easy getaway.

It's all a bit weird isn't it? I wonder what's going on?

Do you think it was:

(a) a fictional robbery?;
(b) A bit of publicity? (although it would be a bit extreme for publicity); or
(c) An insurance job to help them pay to get Michael Jackson in to fill the Star Trek space? :D

Obviously that is in jest. It is, in all seriousness though, rather strange.

I think it may have been an insurance job to pay Michael Jackson off to completely drop any and all notion of headlining a show and get out of Vegas immediately lol
