Howdy y'all!
I've been lurking for about a month now. Having been on a number of boards, I always think it's funny how long it takes lurkers to chime in! Usually, it's when they get comfortable, depending on the board's intentions.
My observation in these parts is that y'all are a right friendly group, and I can't tell you how much good info you have given me, so thanks!
The last visit I made to Vegas was in 2000, to meet a bunch of other board members of a longtime internet group. It was fabulous to say the least! There is absolutely nothing like meeting in person and getting to know each other! So I wish each of you luck on the slot tourney come July. Wish I could be there, but I've already scheduled a trip to the PNW then. Maybe next time!
Before that, I was in Vegas twice with the hub. Once before his massive stroke in '89, and once afterwards. The pre-stroke visit was fabulous and I have to give accolades to the Circus-Circus for both trips, as they were more than accomodating to his handicap (he's in a wheelchair). I couldn't believe it when we decided we wanted to go to the Pink Pony, but then looked down at the stairs, and the fella at the door, said "no problem" and proceeded to pull out a ramp so that he could easily go down. Truly, every where in Circus-Circus we went, they were sooo accomodating!
It was the same when we back after his stroke, but what was hard was that he just didn't have the brain power to play poker anymore. It's difficult when part of one's brain is gone and doesn't work anymore. Just is. Funny thing is pre-stroke in our marriage he got an offer to be a dealer at Circus-Circus. I'm so glad I talked him out of that one! Just wasn't meant to be.
Before I got married, or even thought of it (LOL), I took my beloved father to Las Vegas. I had the time of my life! And so did he, I think. He was a life-long gambler and made his living doing it, before he settled down in his forties. Our trip was scheduled for Nov 11, 1980 and our reservations were for the MGM. Yes, the day after their big fire.
Again, I have to give accolades to the casinos for pulling together to cover the bad situation. I kept telling my father, not to worry, "we have reservations and they would have called us if there was an issue". Well, that was close to 30 years ago, and back then there wasn't the communication on the media that there is now. When we got off the plane, there were signs everywhere saying "If you have reservations at the MGM, please call xxx-xxx-xxxx. So I did. They were putting people up every casino that pitched in to help out their neighbor. I was more than amazed. So we got a room at Caesar's and love it of course! So elegant!
My favorite memory of staying there is taking my dad to the Japanese restaurant there. He was so funny! Most foodies know that oriental soups are very light for the most part. But Daddy, being from the midwest, after having his soup said: "If that was chicken, the chicken must have walked through it." I thought I was going to split my sides!
But we had a wonderful time together, and it lives in my memory as a spectacular time. I think it was one of the highlights of his married life, as he and my mother only took two vacations in the forty-some years they were married. He talked of it often, which always made me feel like I had given him a special time. He's gone been gone over fifteen years, but I still have those very wonderful memories of our time together.
So to bring you up to date, I'm taking off for Vegas again-tomorrow! I'm going with a friend, and her hub will keep an eye on my hub. I can't tell you how excited I am! Truly, my father's gambling blood runs in my veins! Plus I'm a major foodie, or so I think!
I'm packed and ready to go, so YAY! I'll post trip reports if y'all are interested as I'm taking my laptop (wouldn't go anywhere without that!).
Thanks for listening, and wish me luck!
