This week's Topic Of The Week question is:
What would be the one thing you would change about Las Vegas?

2 things really- :p
1- make it cheaper
2- make it easier to get between casinos (monorail is good start, but I can't wait for it to be connected)

Automatically you start thinking, what is negative about Las Vegas. First thoughts are construction, crowds, paytables, club goers, rude people, expensive hotels, meals and table minimums.
While these are all annoying, we put up with them as part of the price of enjoying our favorite destination. If I'm actually looking to change something, I'm going to look short-term and say, get rid of the construction and more specifically the non-hotel/casino construction. It makes the crowd congestion worse, its cluttering the skyline and I will in no way benefit from condos and extra shopping opportunities.
My other change would simply be - the speed that the family of 17, who are walking 10 wide on the strip, are walking.

"Get back" to what made Vegas, Vegas...
Better gaming odds (3:2 Blackjack, video poker pay tables, etc.)
Lower table Minimums

It would be nice if were not so rude. I hate it when somebody sees you walking down an isle in a casino or on the sidewalk and they are standing in the middle of the isle or with a group of people in the middle of the sidewalk and they make not attempt to move or get out of the way so other people can get by them. That is so Rude ! A couple of times after having a few drinks just yelled "Excause Us Your stainding in the middle of the sidewalk and hundreds of people are trying to get past you can you please move and not block the sidewalk" Most of the time they move & some times somebody will say something smart to me and I just get rude back with them.

Since I really enjoy using the pools and walking in the warm weather, I would change the winter temperatures to be much warmer! Then I would certainly plan more winter trips;)!

Only one thing really stands out in my mind that needs to be changed.. the people handing out the girly cards and brochures needs to be stopped. Everyone I know that goes to Vegas for the first time gets disgusted by it.

I also would like to get rid of the people that hand out the flyers [but I believe there was a Court decision that it's their First Amendment right to do this].
More over the strip walkways.

 Bring back the "comps" like the old days. The average "joe", who goes to Vegas all the time, or even once a year with friends, would like a chance to have a "freebie" thrown their way. We spend a lot of money too.
AND, I also agree about the "slappers" on the street - get rid of them!!! This just makes more trash on the sidewalks and streets.

DEFINATELY change the prices for hotel rooms!!!! I would make them more affordable to the average person. Plus I would give more freebies to entice them to stay at my hotel!
I think that it is just getting harder & harder to vacation in Vegas for the person who works their butt off all year for ONE vacation away from home.

I agree with 7777... each hotel would be independently owned.
Couldnt agree MORE!!!

The in your face sales pitches is what we hate the most. We came to Vegas to relax, eat and gamble, not spend it talking to someone who wants to sell us something. Also greeters trying to drag us into a crummy casino. Most of the time we want the "upscale" Vegas experience. Every once and a while, we'll put on the haz-mat suits and venture into one of the D-grade casinos to stretch out our slot dollars.

Better deals at Strip hotels.

Quit making all the new hotels look alike outside. I like that I can look up and down the strip and see a Castle, The Eiffel Tower, NY City etc. If I want boring atmosphere I'll go to the boats.
There would be several things that I would change.
Cheaper deals for the low rollers like myself.
Better comps.
Close all of the clubs. That would get rid of all of the "kids" in vegas. When I say kids I mean the 21 to 30 year olds.

Everything that has been posted are ALL the things I want to change, especially STOP catering to the 20 something-club-hopping-hollywood-wanna-bees!

I want the good ole' days back in the lounges. Affordable drinks, comfortable plush chairs, and the most awesome bands on the planet. I remember seeing Earl Turner, the Jets, Tribute (to the Temptations), and Jonathan & Music Magic, all on the same stage at the Excalibur within the same month, back in the 90's. There was also a great band from the Va. Beach area called Gentlemen and their Lady. You don't hear many GREAT bands in the lounges anymore. They're OK or good, but not all that entertaining, like the ones I've mentioned above. I really miss Jimmy Hopper at the Bellagio too. He did all kinds of music.
Also, bring back the great hypnotists who started the whole craze. (Justin Tranz & Dr. Naughty) The ones they have today are either disgusting, or boring!

Boogie - I agree with you. I agree with 7777 too about one corporation, one casino.
My first trip to Vegas was in 1993 and I really did think I'd died and gone to heaven. For a wide-eyed Englishman it was a lot to take in.
Now it seems that everyone is chanting the "bigger is better" mantra - and I think they've got it wrong. For me (and I've tried to explain it dozens of times to folks who haven't been) the real beauty of Vegas is the contrast. All of these high-tech hotels (and some low-tech ones) are surrounded by desert and mountains.
It's getting harder to see them as each year passes. Maybe someone will open the tallest hotel the FAA will allow and call it "Mountain View" because it will be the only place left in town where you can see them...

There are a few things I would change, but you said name one. Top thing I would like changed is ban construction on the strip. There is enough hotels/casinos. No more condos and shopping needed. It would be so wonderful to be able to walk down the strip just one time without any construction going on.

Porn slapping should be made ILLEGAL. They litter their trash everywhere and I thought prostitution was illegal in Clark county, we all know this is a legal cover for tricks. I am all for adult entertainment but keep it off the streets, if I want my husband to see it he can go to a Gentlemans Club.
I take my girls to Vegas with me to see my family that lives there and I Don't want them to see it they are only 13 for Crying out loud.
Ok now I can get off my soap box:eek:

Outlaw timeshare sellers. We have stopped frequenting the South Strip, especially Excalibur and its neighbours, because I'm sick of being harrassed. The center strip seems to be less "infested" with them...

The ONE thing I would change and the biggest problem in Vegas is......
CORPORATE GREED. Enough($)is NEVER enough($)for the Corporate Leeches, always trying to squeeze a little more money out of the public one way or another, either by changing the rules, lowering the comp rates, or raising the allready outrageous prices, all to try to justify their jobs or their existence. Most of them couldn't hit their rear end with both hands if they tried. They have never worked a day in their lives and have to no clue as to how to take care of their customers.....just milk another nickel out of everyone, however they can.
Most of these "educated idiots" that pretend to run these places, couldn't make it in the real world

I'd like to stop them tearing down the Vegas of old and putting new swanky hotels/casinos in their place. Keep Vintage Vegas!!
Plus, the old favourite, Porn Slappers - they must go!
I agree with you 100% Jacqui! I miss seeing the New Frontier, Boardwalk and Stardust especially. I like seeing diversity on the strip. I am afraid before long they will all look and be alike :( YS I agree with you too on enough condos already!

I like the Vegas experience when I first started going in early 90's. The mix of old & new on the strip. Something for everyone. It's too late now, the upscale trend is out of control & the Stardust is gone. Sad. Viva Las Vegas

I'll have to jump on the transportation bandwagon. There's GOT to be a solution for those of us who want to take in ALL of Vegas, not only the Strip or only Downtown - and I don't wanna have to pay $40 to & from the locations. The monorail was a good start but it needs to continue to Downtown or something else needs to be done.
AND - I agree with leaving some of what made Vegas "VEGAS" alone. The huge luxury casinos are NOT what drives me to visit.

1. I would limit the big corporations to just 2 or 3 casinos. The greed has spoiled the overall experience and just 2 or 3 companies now seem to control Vegas.
2. Get immigration to check the work cards of the people handing out "girl papers" on the strip. Being fluent in Spanish, I know most of them are undocumented.
3. Put the monorail down the middle of the strip or underground down the middle of the strip. Who wants to walk for a mile to ride the monorail?
4. Remind the owners of the hotels that not everyone is a high roller, and the little guy had a lot to do with building Vegas.

I wish they would hurry up with a monorial extension to the airport. It's not going to happen soon but with convention business slated to grow ( LV Sands announced they are a new redesigned convention center and hotel any way you could shuttle people to their hotel quickly makes sense.
Witness how many hotels now get built near airports ( with their own meeting spaces ). Lots of people have only been within a mile or 2 of airports near LA, Chicago and other cities and never even make to that city's downtown.
LV could be in for a rude shock if conventions like CES go somewhere else.

There are many things that I would change and most of it has already been covered. But there is one thing I miss that I would like to bring back:
COIN CUPS and the SOUND OF COINS HITTING THAT METAL TRAY!
I liked seeing how much I had won even though it took a little time to cash in, get change, etc. I can remember the proud look on my wife's face as she took a cupful of quarters to cash in. It seemed to be a lot more fun than taking a ticket to a modified ATM machine.
Other things I would change:
bring back the affordable hotel room
bring back the affordable food prices
send back the porn slappers to wherever they came from.

I would like to see more shuttles that would go to the off-Strip casinos. I would also like to see an express bus that would go from a point A on The Strip to a point B to downtown Las Vegas.
A great point A would be om Flamingo on the side of Bills or the Flamingo entrance to Bally's.
Steve
I say make the slot machines looser like they use to be before 9/11, and I
too hate rude people who want to hog the whole sidewalk when you're
trying to walk with people going in both directions. These people think
that only they have the right away. We're all trying to have a good time,
don't be so mean.

For me it would be the rudeness of the people. I notice it mostly in the foreigners. It has happened at least twice to me. Once I was standing in line to get on a shuttle and a little Asian lady ran right ahead of me. Another time I was in the cashier's line to cash in a ticket, and a man of Arabic persuasion walked right ahead of me. The cashier was smart enough to notice and asked for the next person in line. If you want to come to our country, and win our money, then at least be gracious and thankful for it, not rude and arrogant.

I would go back 10 years or more. Do away with the condos on the strip and all these big expensive hotels. Nice to see but who can afford to stay there with today's prices. I have been fortunate to get to Vegas every year for about the last 20 years but I don't stay in the Bellagio, Venetian, etc. I just want a nice room at a reasonable price.
I also would want more shuttles between the strip and off strip hotels. And also the freebies are getting less and less.

1. Porn slappers would be banned!!!!
2. Time share people would be by appointment only, if I want to buy a time share let me contact you.
3. Back in time to the old deals on food. I don't want to pay $50.00 for a buffet.

I couldn't agree with you more on all of the above!
In addition, I would add that I think they should get rid of all the beautiful people type places that cater to the people want to see and be seen but don't gamble (I.E. The Paris Hilton type and Pussycat Doll wanna be crowds). Get real. Those people don't gamble. They are there to Partyand get stinking drunk and if they are lucky hook up with someone! They should bring back the old Vegas and cater to the people who made it what it was. While they are at it, they should break up the Strip monopoly. That's a big part of why the room rates suck even though gambling is down. They wonder why revenue is down? It's no wonder to all of us old timers who've been going there for years.

With all due respect I have had similar incidents happen and it was Americans who were rude, druken and disorderly. Please don't sterotype people by their race. Something about that just doesn't sit right. FWIW, I'm from the U.S.

I'm not against construction. I'm just against it inconveniencing everyone to do it. There should be no construction whatsoever impacting the strip. Every hotel has back access roads and alternative access roads where construction could and should use for main construction access. Inconvenience the hotel/casino and not the customers by hogging up the strip. It's absolutely ridiculous.
Also, there really should be some kind of historical committee to save some of the old school culture of Vegas. I don't mean entire casinos. Just some of the old things that we all remember.
Lastly, and I'm sorry as I know this is controversial, kids don't belong in Vegas...period. The porn everywhere, smoking, drunks, prostitution, etc., etc, etc. As an adult, I don't mind any of it. However as a parent, I don't try and justify a trip to Vegas by pretending that it's kid friendly. Sure, there are things to do there for children. However, when I'm at Disneyland, I don't have to explain to my 6 year old why there's a mobile billboard that just pulled up next to our car advertising "Dancers to your room." It's a tragedy seeing toddlers being shoved around in strollers at 3am, being pushed through the gambling areas, down the strip and everywhere else. Be responsible and take them somewhere that's a little more child friendly, and quit pretending your vacation is theres.
Cheers!
