Since you can't hide a pyramid in the desert and you can't tear down the walls and disguise it as a potted plant, here are my thoughts on what to do with the hotel.

#1. Keep the building as it is.
#2. Re-Theme it as the 4th pyramid of Giza. It just disappeared 1000's of years ago from Egypt and magically reappeared in Vegas.

NOW!.... THIS is where you come in. Lets all design a new mega resort out of this building. Just enter the next number and add your own ideas.

2. We used to have a chocolate bar in the UK which was a dark chocolate pyramid with mint cream inside. They could re-design the Luxor in line with that - it would be a chocoholic's paradise! :D

3. A big prism with refracting light changing colors all over it and maybe have a theme of an eco friendly environment or science (you never said it had to plausible or something someone would want to stay at ;)) But then I think it would be cool if they turned Excaliber into a haunted Transylvanian castle

Fill it with hippies sitting around incense burners chanting, sell Devo type Pyramid hats and "Heling Potions" to the guests, and charge them extra for the "Magical Healing Powers" of the Pyramid, marketing it as the "Fountain of Youth" for women, with "Amaxing Restorative Effect" for the male libido... and it channels energy from the universe, and keeps your razor blades sharp too!

:cool::cool:

Good advice for FREE!

Yeah, that's pretty poor planning to build something in such a distinct shape that there is no hiding it. At least Treasure Island isn't shaped like a giant pirate ship or treasure chest. No matter how they try to 'cover it up' it's always going to be a pyramid. Even a 3 year old will be able to tell that. On top of that, regardless of what they do, everyone will always remember it purely as 'the place that used to be Egypt themed.' Great job MGM. I imagine (if) they don't tear it down, they'll realize their mistake and spend a pharaoh's fortune to retheme it. I know part of their parking lot was recently re-zoned for residential high rises. I wonder if they are still moving forward with that.

Their parking structure is not that big. I wonder how that would work. I agree that it was ridiculous to try to de-theme a themed building...and then they'll pay big time to re-invent the wheel. As for the re-zoning, it sounds more like a future ace in the hole. I can't see that kind of project happening while CCP is bleeding MGM's money.

I have always wondered how they could re-theme the place since they started to take away any Egyptian theme inside. The one thing I noticed about the look from outside is how the glass looks so dirty and faded plus you can see the sand in between the glass plates. It looks fine from a distance and at night, but in the day it looks dated. The towers' glass looks much darker and cleaner than the pyramid.

Even though much of Luxor has been "de-themed" the Egyptian statues when you first enter the lobby remain as do the outdoor Sphinx and Cleopatra's Needle...still MGM COULD conceivably detheme the building without imploding it because the MGM Grand was built around the existing Marina hotel. The Marina was never imploded, but absorbed intact into the MGM Grand Project. MGM could construct a shell around the pyramid shape if they truly wanted to detheme it once and for all...much in the same way Planet Hollywood dethemed The Aladdin - they built over the arabian themed facade and created a new one without imploding the resort, or even having to miss a single day of business.

Pyramids of Mars! Give it a whole John Carter/Planetary Romance/pulp sci-fi kind of theme!

Or, you know, Aztecs, but that's boring.

They should have left the theming alone! And while at it, they should retheme all the Casinos.

I think they want to take the clean lines of the pyramid and infuse them into the areas inside the hotel. That seems to be what they have done. I was told they were going to be taking out the rest of the egypt themed stuff, but that seems to have been put on hold. I think they are confused by the total flop in the Cris Angle show. I also think it was a mistake to bring the Trop's retread shows Bodies and the Titanic in. Why could they not have tried something new?

They need to gut the buffet space and retool it with the bright crisp clean lines they have used upstairs. That and better food.

I think a top notch laserlight show would work in the Luxor. Have the seats interact with the music and show.

Instead of looking at the Pyramid as the past, retool it as a look into the future. I think that could work. Have slot banks with holographic people that say your name when you insert your players card. Have more touch screen items like the menue for Tender the steak house. It is a pretty cool menue to look through.

There is a ton of really neat things you could do to place the New Luxor back on the map.

That holographic idea is a very cool one - you should try to pitch it to a gaming company! I don't think the Luxor could accomplish that on it's own because the casinos get all of their slots from gaming companies like IGT and Ballys - I don't think that holographic technology has even been developed by the gaming companies yet - but the idea is a great one.

The Egyptians built the pyramids so their rulers could enter the heavens. In a way they were built as a "spaceship". (This is really true and if you don't believe me, check it out)

So, re-theme it as a spaceship! There is no theme casino like this in Vegas. Now that "Star Trek the Experience" has closed this is even more true. All the dealers could be dressed in sexy outer-space attire, the slots could be themed along the same lines and you could even have great cocktails based on the theme. Front Desk would be the "Blast-Off" Zone, etc, etc. The shows could be also based around this theme and the possibilities are endless.

Adults and Kids would find the hotel amazing!!

A while back, there actually was a proposal to do a Moon themed resort. Never came about. Looked pretty cool, though. Check it out.

like the pyramid on the dollar bill. A big eye on top to see what you are up to. Wynn began the "theme" hotel and then he realized you have to live with the "theme" forever so he went the other way with Wynn with no theme at all.

I have a different viewpoint. Aside for the Spinx, etc., as far as the pyramid goes, why does it have to pertain to Eqypt. For instance, at Cal State Long Beach, their gym is in the shape of a pyramid and they have nothing to do with Egypt. Their mascot is the 49er. I understand the association of the pyramid to an Egyptian theme, but that's with the understanding that the buildings have a theme. So, if there's an understanding that the buildings don't have a theme, then it's just a building shaped as a pyramid.

All that being said, I think from an architectural standpoint, they should build around 2 sides of the pyramid so that there will be this triangular like structure sticking out of the bottom of the building, which would basically kill any thought that it once was a pyramid. I think that can give it a real nice look. But it might be a design nightmare for the inside part of the building.

I also think they should let whoever designed the World Market, just off of the freeway, design their hotel. Or the guy who designed that funky hotel in Dubai. Those people were thinking outside of the box. This will start the trend that Las Vegas is no longer a tacky theme hotel but an education in architectural engineering. But please don't let Frank Gehry anywhere near the place. I'm still having nightmares on the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. Oh, what the heck, let him try. It'll make things interesting.

I think the original design of the Luxor was a mixture of theme and superstition. Astrology enthusiasts feel that the pyramid can bring inner peace and prosperity. Also the beam of energy the pyramid releases is reflected by the structure and neutralizes negative ions. Where else but in LV might you find many people that might not have a superstitious bone in their body but the minute they walk into a casino they start rubbing crystals on the slot machine, never place a bet when the time is 13 minutes after or before the hour, the machine number has to have a 7 in the number, etc. After all when the MGM was built the door was encased in large open mouthed Lion. MGM then realized the lion was a symbolism of bad luck so they changed the entrance(that's the story I heard).

I would go even more outlandish. I would incorporate an Indiana Jones type atmosphere. Raiders of the Lost Ark and the Temple of Doom would be emphasized. There would also be plenty of Boris Karloff and the Mummy. Bring in some snake charmers and a bazaar atmosphere. I love themes. Camp it up as much as possible. If I want bland, I will stay in a Marriott in Pittsburg.............
