Is there any place in Vegas you can get good old Tex-Mex? We are Texans who prefer the traditional echiladas, tamales, cheese tacos, beef tacos, nachos, fajitas, guacamole, pralines, etc. We don't like that bland stuff that is billed as REAL Mexican. Don't tell me to go to Taco Bell.

I agree with Lindo Michoacan. It's got some excellent food.

I would also recommend Viva Mercado, which is off-Strip, and Don Miguel's at The Orleans. Both were excellent as well.

Yep, the one @ The Orleans. Ate there twice, and would go again. Food was Great, and service was good as well. Price was very fair.

Sonntex,
I live in Dallas and so understand your plight of finding good TexMex when not at home. I would recommend Don Miguel's at the Orleans. The food is very reasonably priced and you'll find your regular TexMex dishes as well as some of the more unusual items. The food is quite good and a very good value. Their margaritas are very good also and very big.

Locals rated Lindo #1 and I do too. FABULOUS food
Although is is more pricey, I also suggest the Border Grill in Mandalay Bay. Probably the best Quesadillas I have ever had.

Another thumbs up for Don Miguel's at the Orleans. We used the 2 for 1 coupon from the ACG for the fajitas. Mr. P had the beef and I had the chicken and then we switched.

Yummmmm!

My favorite is a local mon-and-pop place called Casa Don Juan. It's on Main Street between the Stratosphere and downtown. This neighborhood used to be kinda dicey but is making strides at being cleaned up. Casa Don Juan used to be a real hole in the wall but on my last visit I found they had taken over several other storefronts on the block and did a major remodeling. Usually I'm the only non-Hispanic person in the place - which to me is a pretty good indication of the authenticness.

Downtown's rebirth isn't coming only in the manner of $5 million lounges and chichi outlet malls (though we love those, too). Visiting the completely reborn (after a fire years ago) Casa Don Juan is like stepping out of Las Vegas and into Downtown, Anyplace. Freshly handmade tortillas wrap the expected tacos and burritos, but digging deeper on the menu reveals Baja-inspired parrillada (seafood grill), steak ranchero and chilaquiles.

Another review

With authentic Mexican fare and flavorful fare, you'd be hard-pressed to find a Mexican restaurant in the valley to rival Casa Don Juan. With all the colorful decor -- pinatas and streamers ushering you into the restaurant, telenovellas on the TVs and a mariachi band or two in the evenings, it's easy to lose sight of the first reason for coming to Casa Don Juan: the food. Tostadas and tacos are listed singly on the menu and with good reason; if you order more than one, they'll come on separate plates. Burritos are the size of a small forearm and the seafood is recommended. And then there are the drinks: you haven't had a pina colada until you've had one served inside a fresh pineapple. A full selection of Mexican beers is also available. -- Jennifer Prosser

Casa Don Juan winner of
Best Lunch Deal in the Staff poll.

1202 S. Main St.

Considering the rotating lunch specials, we could eat lunch at Casa Don Juan every day of the week -- or at least Monday through Friday. Casa Don Juan's special is $4.99 per person, which includes soup. There are enchiladas one day, fajitas another, carnitas still another. Pick your favorites and pick your days. It's a deal we can't pass up -- and that seems to be the case, as well, for employees of the Clark County Government Center.
