I hope the rumours aren't true about the Sphinx being removed from the front of the Luxor. I really like it. There is also the small matter that the hotel was designed by a guy from Glasgow, about 2 miles away from where my mum lives!

He must be about 5000 years old.

Jacqui,

Luxor is definately de-theming the place. However, I read within the last week or so that they have NOT made a decision yet whether they will be removing the large sphinx from in front.

I can't remember exactly where I read it. Probably either the Review Journal or Vegas Today and Tomorrow.

Thanks ChicChas. I knew they were changing the theme because they had started to "de-theme" when I was there in the summer. I really love the Sphinx though. Do you think if they are going to get rid of it that they would sell it to me for my garden? :D

Jacqui,

I'm sure they would be more than happy to sell it to you, but I see a potential problem.

You'd have to cut back on your shopping to get it in your suitcase for the trip home. Do you think you can handle that?

Haha well I didn't think of that Charlie, now THAT would be a problem!:D

Let's just hope they decide to keep it where it is then!

They will just keep putting ads on it. After a while it will look like a billboard.

I was also wondering how they would de-theme the Luxor! I mean after all, it is a pyramid! I know they're removing the heiroglyphics (not sure how to spell that...lol), and statues from inside, but it will still look Eqyptian to me. Oh well, that's Vegas. Always changing....gotta love it!

You can't change the outside (although you can cover it up with big advertisements ;) ).
They are taking out all of the Egyptian references inside. The bars have all been redone and have non-Egyptian names (like Flight and Aurora). The buffet is no longer the Pharaoh's Feast. It is called More, now. The camels and camel races disappeared right after MGM/Mirage acquired Luxor.
In some respects they are trying to do what TI did a few years ago when it changed the Treasure Island image. The Luxor is going to have a harder time of it though, since they are trying to move into the non-themed, modern/hip realm where places like Hard Rock, the Palms and Planet Hollywood already have a good foothold.

Interesting article in the new VEGAS magazine with the Luxor COO and the challanges they are facing there.

Dont know if someone has touched on this or not... i've heard a rumor that the Luxor will be re-named "the pyramid".

In the article another possible name was "the Point" I liked the Pyramid better.

I heard the rumor about renaming the place about a year or so ago. Just about the time they were starting to renovate some of the different areas.

As the story unfolded, it seems that The Pyramid and The Point didn't fly with the public and they dropped those ideas. For the time being, they're sticking with Luxor.

I think the correct phrase would be a RE-Theme. Can't get rid of a pyramid.
