View Full Version : "Topic Of The Week" What's Your Denomination Preference?"

Steve

This week's Topic Of The Week question is:

"If you're a slots player, do you prefer penny machines, nickels, quarters, dollars, or more; or do you like to mix it up?

"If you're a Video Poker player, do you prefer multiple games at low denominations (like 100 play penny or ten play nickel) or do you stick to the single game in the denomination of your choice".

Seems like for me also -- penny's and nickels are the most fun! Just can't wait for the extra "SPECIALS" to come on the screen!

I like all the pennies and nickels machines that has 9,15,20,25,40, or more lines....

I also like the multi-hand penny and nickle machines such as multi-strike and super times pay poker....

I can play max bet on most of the penny machines and I love the bonus rounds. In fact I will walk around and try to find a machine I have never played before just to see what happens on the bonus round. I do it more for entertainment value, but I have been able to win a couple hundred on them also.

I'd say $1.00. I mean, come on! You've spent hundreds on airfare and hotel (not to mention food and entertainment), unless you're comped, and if you play nickes and pennnies, chances are you're not. Why waste your time? Even dollar slots are a rip-off most of the time. Learn blackjack or poker to really have a chance to win anything of significance. I've been to Vegas about 25 times over the past 7 years. Slots (unless you are the one in a million to win a large progressive) are at best, a break even game. A good blackjack player has a better than even chance of walking away with real cash even without card counting (with enough self discipline).
The bottom line is that penny and nickle slots are lots of fun, but you're in Vegas. You've spent lots of money to get there, perhaps you've taken time off from work as well. Now you're going to sit there betting pennies? If you're that desperate to gamble and can't afford at least dollar slots get a friendly card game going in your neighborhood where you can limit raises to a quarter. You'll save hundreds or maybe thousands.

We used to do only quarter machines with an occasional fifty cent machine. Last year, we started doing a $5.00 wheel of fortune machine, but only putting one $20 bill in and doing the two pulls ($10 per max pull). On the second spin, hit the wheel, hit for $250. On a quarter machine, that was equal to hitting the 1000! So, we got hooked. This year, we visited 12 casinos and searched out a $5 wheel machine in each. Dropped $20 only in each and did a full 2 pulls on each even if we hit on the first spin. Hit 3 $500 wins, one $250 and several $125 wins. Doubt that will happen again, not a run like that, but it sure was fun. My brother hit a $600 on his machine. The best hit was a $500 hit at NYNY, on the way to the airport.....made the trip out of there somewhat more bearable :)

I play quarter 10x & 12x machines for the best payouts. When I get bored I go to the 5 cent and play 60 coins in hopes of getting a quick bonus round with a good payout. It usually works and I will end up winning anywhere from $100 to 500. THe nickel machines are best to get a bonus round and walk away quickly before it eats it all back.

;) My slot machine bets go according to my table bets. After I have lost all the big money I care to lose at the tables, than I go to the $1.00 slots. If I continue to lose then I go to the .25 slots and so on untill I have lost everything or my plane is leaving. Which ever comes first.

Low Roller

It looks to me like your one of those that don't see the over all fun Vegas is - without even gambling!

I enjoy comped rooms etc but find I need to do more then just sit at a BJ table!

I like to play many different games - Vegas is not a trip to work!

I like to sit with my none gambling wife at the 1 cent 5 cent slots and laugh and have fun - at 70 we have done it all!

Two or three new shows each visit - C Dions last show 12/15 is our next trip - and yes I will play BJ but for a lot of fun with my wife of 47 years - we play the cheep slots!

They are a loser unless its for fun!!!

I perfer craps with a low limit so I can play until someone gets hot with the dice. Five dollars is about as low as you can find nowdays. I will play Pai Gow at $10-25 a hand also. For slots I like pennies at max coin and a specific machine called the 21 gambler (.25, $1, AND $5 DENOMINATIONS) with a bonus round where you play a hand of 21. For video poker, currently I have been playing .25 as there is no W2-G if you hit a royal. I will still play $1 with max coin and $5 with one coin increasing if the machine heats up. I know some contend that they make money at gamming but I perfer to view it as an entertainment expense. Budgetting is best and enjoying shows and sights as part of the "Vegas Experience" is the way to have the most rewarding Vegas trips. Last year I was going to Vegas at least twice a month and have slowed down some this year due to my daughters illness. Truly there is no place like it in the world "VIVA LAS VEGAS"

You dont have a clue about pennie slots! ;) You are betting anywhere from .40.-5.00 a pull. Trust me love you can get comped out the ARSE if you play the pennies correctly.
As a matter of fact let's do a test in vegas.... we both get 100.00 and see who can play longer:p

and look for the ones that $2.00 is the maximum bet. We usually "max bet" and either win big or loose big ! I usually am the looser but my wife usually wins! ;) She wins on enough of her play that we usually go home with at least one IRS 1099 form. :)

I hope I haven't jinxed our next trip! ;)

Although I know you give up a bigger average to the casino, I think nickel slots are more fun. I don't play slots for the winning potential, I play them for fun...so the nickels are generally more interactive, and you get more entertainment for your buck IMO.

I like $5 Top Dollar and Pinball machines. If I hit, I'll try $10 Top Dollar. I play 5 cent video slots for the fun of it. My room is always comped and some food and beverage. Occasionally I'll try my luck at $100 Blackjack tables and big Baccarat, which gets me 30 year old Scotch while and after playing.

In recent years it has been mostly 25 cent video poker. Sometimes
we will put a few dollars in the $1.00 slots. On our last couple of
trips to Vegas we have played some pennies. I won $200. on a penny
machine at the Orleans on our lst night back in April. Those machines
are fun to play, but, you usually have to get into the bonus round to
win. We never play video poker anymore on the Strip. The pay
tables are terrible. Will try our luck again the last week in Aug.

I like to start off with the $1 slots and if I keep winning I stay with the $1 slots. Mostly it's the Red,White and Blue and Blazing 7's. Then I go to quarter slots. If I'm not winning too much then I go to nickels. One of these days I'll actually try the $.50 slots. Good luck everyone on whatever denomination slots you play.:)

Hi All - I used to play 25-cent video poker almost exclusively. Can't seem to win at them any more. I don't care what the pay tables say, if they set them tight you are not going to win. Also, comps for playing video poker are accrued at only half the comps you get for playing slots. So, now I play 1-cent and nickle machines for a little entertainment. Machines are so tight anywhere you go....Vegas, Tunica, Boloxi, riverboats...you don't stand a chance. (Yes, I know I'm ranting) My husband and I only play about 1/5 as much as we used to a couple of years ago. Have a good one!

I play slots, VP, and a some BJ. When I play slots, I play just about any denomination but seem to win more on the penny machines. I play quarter VP but will increase it to dollars when I think I've improved enough.

a slot would be the old fashion reels at 25 cents with 5 lines, 3 lines sometimes ..
Put $20.00 in, order a drink, hit max credits 16 times, hope the drink will arrive before the money is gone, give the server a $1.00 tip.
That free cocktail only cost $21.00
So simple a monkey can do it.

VP it's 25 cent jacks or better, tripple play every now and then single line.

I prefer quarter slots but play nickles and pennies also. I just mix it up.
VP I like quarters but hard to win on them any more. If nickle vp is available I will play that. I do not like the 10 play poker machines.

Went to Tunica MS last week. First hour there hit $250 on a quarter slot, The next day $100 on nickle poker (4 deuces) and 10 minutes before heading home I played deuces wild quarter poker and hit is for $250. Oh what fun.

Will be going to Las Vegas in Novemeber.

It all depends on how I am doing, start out on $1 video poker, then if nothing is hitting drop to $.50 or $.25. However, I will play slots for a break and if it is one of those new slots that has 25 or 30 lines, then it is $.01 or $.02. :o

I used to be strictly dollars but things have changed in the past 2 years and the fun at the new penny and nickel machines have got me. I look around for ones that don't require too much for max bet as I can't get myself not to play max. It is getting harder and harder to find any that require less than $ for max play. I stick to quarters and $1 for Video Poker, all depends what my bankroll is for the trip. Once in a great while I wonder over to the $5 slots in the high limit room but not too often.

In old Vegas, quarter slots were the way to go. Then I got hooked on nickels and their bonus rounds. When I went in May for son's wedding, only played pennies....kind of a bummer. I would love to play dollars but bankroll just doesn't want to cooperate! I like pennies for just mindless fun but the drink gals seem to stay away. Once they find out I am willing to give them a buck or two tip or more while at the penny machines, they seem to find their way back a little faster. So, I play for the entertainment value but my heart is still at the nickels.

Doesn't matter what you play...Vegas has to learn to give some of it back. Slots are getting tighter every time we go; now about 2x a year.

We generally play 1 cent and 5 cent and move up to 25 cent only if we are able to get some money out of the lower denominations. Playing for fun but not much fun if they just chew your money up. We generally put in 5 dollar bills only and play it through. If we are lucky to win 20 to 50 bucks we cash out and get more 5s. We like trying anything new in slots.

I love to play the 50 line or 100 line video poker at max for a penny. These are hard machines to find in LV as well as AC. The pay tables are fair at best, but we plug on anyway. The most annoying thing are the people who play one line for a penny or other sucg low bets. They put in $5.00 and hog the machines forever.

Usually nickels and quarters on the VP and quarters on the slots. I'm not a big fan of the penny slots because I can never figure out where all the paylines are - it's a lot more fun watching the reels line up.

Sorry, no penny/nickle/dime slots for me - too much casino advantage. I go to Vegas to try to win. Fun for me is winning. I play $1 and some $5. If times are tough, I'll go to 50 centers. Even though I play mostly on the strip, not the best advantage, I've had only two losing trips in the last 7.

My favorite are penny slots. Have won jackpots from $200 to $3,165 - and I wasn't even paying the max amount. I can't afford $2, $3 or $5 a hit. Love the bonuses even if I don't get a high amount.

Husband plays only 25 cent traditional slots. He wins many times on the triple or double pays. Going to Las Vegas on August 22-28. Hope we are lucky again. If not, we'll have fun anyway.

I play all the slot denominations, but I do like the nickel and penny video slots for the entertainment of the bonus rounds. It also helps stretch our bankroll since we're usually out there five to seven days on our trips. Looking forward to trying the new "Top Gun" video slots next trip.

As far as VP I like the triple play in the nickel version but really don't care for the fifty and 100 play penny versions. For dollar and quarter VP I play single line.

I'll play slots every now and then - usually when I'm hanging out with friends who are playing those one-armed bandits. You can usually find me at the craps table. Don't really care what the minimum is (except for $100 min's). I'll usually adjust my betting strategy based on the minimum table bet and how hot (or cold) the table is.

I also like the sports betting. I'm addicted to trying to hit 3 team parlays.

Next trip is 7 weeks away. Can't wait.

I usually start with quarters, if not doing well, go to pennys & nickles, mainly for entertainment. I've won $500 on a nickle, a few times.
If I'm and feeling a little lucky I'll try dollars for awhile. Sometimes, I just wander around looking for that winning machine (in denominations $1 and under), don't we all-lol!

I think I tried a $5, only a couple times.

Even though I enjoy the penny machines I feel like I'm being forced into playing them as there are very few new quarters and dollar slots around.

This past trip I found a new $1.00 machine called "Temple Treasure." I put $20 in and hit for $400. It's almost impossible to do that on a penny machine. I don't think I have ever cashed out anything over $200 from a penny machine.

I play .50 and $1 three reel machines in slots and .25 in VP. I just don't get the deal with the video .1 machines. If you play max bets on these machines you might as well be playing $1 machines...with higher payouts usually on the $ machines.

I like to play pennies at max lines, but minimum bet. I play primarily for the entertainment value and if I win anything it's a bonus.

I like to play single line VP, older games such as jacks or better - 25 cent;
maybe higher if I ever get the game down correctly,

slots - nickel, after all........

any other games are just a diversion from my true love, marathon sessions of Blackjack, as cheap as I can find the minimums, with the best odds available - never a continuous shuffler, never a 6-5 payout

Between my husband and myself, we have hit 18 Royals; all but two of them were on .25 machines. The other two were on $1.00 machines. My biggest hit was on a $5.00 VP machine the first time I played it. Now I am hooked on $5.00 machines. Don't get me wrong, I will play all denominations and all kinds of games. I love the bonus rounds on the slot machines. One time my husband spent over five hours on a 100-play, penny VP machine. He put in $100 and came out $2.00 ahead. That may not seem like alot, but he didn't lose. We were in the casino less than 12 hours and our rooms and our meals were comp'd. for the rest of trip. It is not only the amount you play, but how long you play.

Pennies. I zone out better. I don't feel guilty playing pennies. I enjoy having some control over a certain aspect of my life, and the machine rarely ever refuses to spin, as long as I feed it. I can play higher denominations, but again, it's fun to have thrift control. To many people it is a mindless pursuit, but maybe I need that particular mindlessness at the time.

Wow, that's a bit harsh!

I play max bet on penny Goldfish machines and that's a $3 spin, same a $1 machine would be. I've actually won more money playing that!

;) My slot machine bets go according to my table bets. After I have lost all the big money I care to lose at the tables, than I go to the $1.00 slots. If I continue to lose then I go to the .25 slots and so on untill I have lost everything or my plane is leaving. Which ever comes first.

As I sit here, trying to pick up tips for upcoming trip on Feb 3 for 10 nights...I came across your comment...that's me!! for the last 10 trips or so and this time ...I'm telling myself I'll plan/manage my money differently....do shows in between sessions.....hopefully I will but I must say....your way is a lot of fun!!lol

The few times that I play slots, I often will play nickels, though if I'm feeling lucky then I'll play dollars for a bit.

My hubby and I really like the video slots with the bonus rounds...some of the newer ones are getting a bit pricey to play with 25 lines and up...but we usually stick to the ones with 9 lines and play 5 coins each...a bit less expensive..
I also love PGP...but no higher than $5 min. Needless to say, I won't play a lot on PGP in LV...I usually play in Reno:D
