This week's Topic Of The Week question is:

What are some items people have made a Vegas collection out of? Some folks collect t-shirts, some collect casino chips - what else has become a collection?

We collect silver strikes, the collectable casino coins found in some casinos. They are in a slot machine type machine. The centers are silver surrounded by a brassy metal.

I have collected $1.00 chips since about 1970. I have many chips from casino's long gone. Guess I will never get my money back. By the way Steve I leave tomorrow morning for Vegas for a week. I am flying US Air so say a pray for me.

Keep up your great work on Vegas as we all truly enjoy your info and that of your subscribers.

I collect used decks of cards from the casinos. When I get 28 of them, I get a poster size frame and some matting and create a framed set.

I also collect logo golf balls and display them in the golf ball cases.

Back in the early 80's when they first started slot tournaments I used to get all kinds of offers to play in the tourneys. Some were free (which I usually ended up entering) and some were for a small buy in. I also saved all the offers from various casinos (free rooms, dinner, etc.) and the Las Vegas magazines (What's On, etc.) My big project now is sorting them into years and casinos and mounting them in scrapbooks. I think my kids will get a kick out of seeing what Vegas would do to bring the gambling tourists in. My earliest is 1981 (when my now 27 year old son) was 1-1/2 years old!

We have a nice framed set of thirty-five silver strikes mounted on the wall in our hallway. We have also saved almost all of the slot cards we have amassed over the years while visiting Las Vegas. We don't really go out of our way to collect either item anymore; just sort of let them come to us;) .

I used to collect Match Books but now we collect all the free stuff in the room ----soaps, shampoos, lotions, etc.... I also will collect a souvenir golf ball on occasion and have a few of them. One thing I started collecting purely by accident but now I make a point of getting are the tickets from slot machines when I'm done playing. I'm talking about the ones for less than a dollar. It's kind of funny to show people all my "winnings" and they see a collection of payout tickets for .01 each.

I/we collect shot glasses and match books. The latter is kind of an oddity because neither of us smoke.

the slot machine paper slips for .01, slot cards. And we save our room keys. It is interesting to look at the items from casinos that are no longer there.

I started out collecting plastic coin cups. I have a stack of them but use one to collect quarters for my next trip.

I've collected some ashtrays when they used to have the casino's logo on them. I have a few silver strikes and $1 coins from the different casinos. I also kept a lot of the 'freebies' given out when you signed up for the slot clubs (a big gold necklace from the original Caesar's, fanny pack from Circus, Circus, etc.) But the biggest collection by far are the club cards themselves. Seems everytime we go they are either issuing new ones or you get one that is good at multiple casinos. I also kept some of these souveniers from Indian casinos in Michigan and Arizona. My goal is to gamble in every state of the union. Also added the Bahamas to the list on a visit last year.

Same as a few have noted: shot glasses (not sure why, as have hundreds already!), matchbooks from everywhere (even have friends traveling overseas pick them up for me), and slot cards. WISH I would have begun collecting gaming chips when I first began visiting 10 years ago as many casinos/chips are no longer available. LOVE the key collection idea as I never can remember the room # once I get home. Would be nice to be able to recommend a room or even a side of hallway (odd/even, etc) when people ask what to request. Thanks for the great tip!

:D Well I do collect tshirts as well as sweatshirts. But I specifically come out during the rodeo week in December so..............I also collect Rodeo jackets, tshirts, sweatshirts and other rodeo and country western clothing as well as other western items. I seem to collect cowboy boots made of resin now also.
Cowboy Marketplace and Cowboy Christmas get quite a bit of money out of me as long as the casinos cooperate..........lol :D

Years ago I used to collect ash trays. Many casinos started using plain non-logoed ash trays. Now you can hardly find any with a casino name on them.

I then switched to collecting match books. When I visit a casino for the first time I either go to a bar or ask a floor person for a couple books of matches.

I also have a collection of general memorabilia like drink stirers, pamphlets, coffee cups, drink coasters etc.

I have collected Silver Strikes, but at $10 a collectable, I have cashed in or sold most except for one from the casinos that are gone.

Despite much abuse from my girlfriend, I collect hotel Keys and Slot Club cards. She's coming around tho!!! :)

We also send a postcard to ourselves from any trip we take so we have a picture, time/date stamp and a nice memory.

I've collected the decorative goblet glasses over the years. Most of them came from excalibur, but other casinos have copied their idea and design.

I've also collected matchbooks from the various hotels.

My most unusual--I've saved all my Hypnotiq bottles that I've emptied over the years, and if I can find a good glass cutting tool, to cut off the necks off of the bottles, I plan to make a grand candle display, complete with turquioise votives. Someday!

When I first visited Las Vegas oh so many years ago, I found that the playing cards were cheap...at least at some places anyway. So I have decks of all varieties from all casinos around the Las Vegas and Laughlin too. Also found a knack at collecting Silver Strikes too. I won one on a machine once and I was hooked. I have to try and win one on each trip.

I've collected a bunch of those plastic coin cups (back in the day when slots spewed coin).
I'm still wondering what to do with the things...

I use them under the bathroom sink to put combs, razors, and other things that you want handy. When they were available I got a couple from the casino and used them in my room to put my makeup etc, in on the counter so I would not have to search for things.

I just remembered a collection I got rid of when I got married.

For years I've collected business cards and still have a huge collection.

Before the days of the "porn slappers, the call girls use to place their cards on the newspaper boxes along the strip. You'd see them sticking out on the tops and sides of these boxes. Being that they were business cards I thought I'd collect them as well.

One day I was driving down the strip with my father and I saw a whole line of newspapers boxes just stuffed with dozens of different cards from the call girls. We were approaching a red light at that corner so I asked dad to jump out a grab me some. The sight of this distinguished looking, white haired, gentleman jumping out of the car and furiously grabbing up all the different cards he could get his hands on before the light turned green was hystarical. :D

I collected those cards (until I got married), but, for the record, I never called any of them.

Over the years I have been collecting a couple of different things. I used to purchase refrigerator magnets (my favorite says "I lost my ass in Vegas" with a four legged one on it),then I found that by keeping the room key and attaching a magnet on the back it became a souvenir to hang on the frig. I now purchase anything that says "Welcome to Las Vegas" - clocks, belt buckles etc. I also have a drawer full of slot cards. One of my friends connected fish line to her slot cards and hangs them on her Christmas tree as garland.

I have been collecting $5 chips from any casino I go to since 1993. I keep them on my desk in my office so I am constantly playing with them thinking about my next trip to Vegas. I have $315.00 worth of these chips but some of the casinos are long gone by now.
I was at the Stardust the last night they were open and they wouldn't give me a chip from the cage. I actually had to pretend to be playing and cashed a $10 bill, then left. It was sad to say goodbye to a Las Vegas Icon.

I started collecting pens about 5 years ago. I collect a pen if it is from a casino that has a story behind it from my visit. I use the pens on a daily basis as they remind me of the fun I had. My next visit is in June and we will see Mamma Mia....I will be sure to get a pen from Mandalay Bay then. :)

I don't really collect anything, but I do have some souvenirs.....t-shirts and a few dollar chips I saved from Bellagio, and Mirage.

My daughter has quite a few objects from Luxor, her passion (and possible future career) is ancient Egypt so she got quite a few souvenirs.

A friend of mine has a collection of shot glasses from each casino, and I know someone elso who collects dice and cards from each casino.

I collect some mugs, have some from Aladdin, some silver strikes, only have 3, 2 from Westward Ho, 1 from Barbary Coast, I have casino tubs which I use to put flower pots in on the windowsil in the basement, I have players cards from various casinos, notepads, pens, etc. Of course I use the pens and the notepads but they remind me of LV.

As for soaps and shampoos from hotels, they go to my Daughter-in-Law who gives them to their church for the homeless. They bring in a busload of homeless people every Wednesday for lunch and dole out clothing and personal grooming items (much needed by the homeless).

I also have a lot of players cards and many from casinos no longer in existence. Not difficult the past few years the way casinos have disappeared or changed their names.

I do have a $5 casino chip from Casino Niagara which we got free with coupon in 2000 for the centennial.

In other words, I have a bunch of junk in my house.

As for a use for those old coin buckets, if you do any kind of painting or refinishing work, pour the gallong cans into the smaller coin buckets. The large buckets are a little too big to hold in one hand, but the smaller ones are perfect for me.

Suzy used to save all of the free toiletries, until it exceeded about 100 pounds of pure, unadulterated junk. I had 4 suitcases full of the stuff.

I don't collect the pens, but I take them and use them until I lose them.

My favorite collectible is a $25 chip from Hard Rock with Jimi Hendrix on it. Purple Haze ....

And for the woman who collects men, I think we need to meet, unless you turn praying mantiss, in which case I'll stick to what I have.

We collect mostly casino dice from the craps tables. But, we also collect $1.00 casino chips, and a few other casino collectibles like playing cards from the Blackjack tables. Click here to see some of the items we collect: Casinobilia (http://stores.ebay.com/Casinobilia)

We started collecting casino memorabilia about 4 years ago, and now we have a collection of about 2000 dice, and several hundred chips.

We also have casino matchbooks, ashtrays, tokens and a few silver strikes. We really enjoy collecting stuff from the casinos.

I really don't have anything I specifically collect. It's all random. If I find something to be unique I'll buy or keep it for a souvineer. Some stuff I have collected over the years include:

Ceasars Shadow Bar napkin (has a cool outline of a Shadow Bar dancer printed on the napkin). If there's any unique napkin designs I'll take one.

Las Veags snow globe with all the Strip casino's inside. I want to buy that small Welcome to Las Vegas sign that lights up that they sell in those Vegas souvineer shops.

Decks of cards from the Plaza (2005 design with cool vintage pattern). If I find any unique designs on decks of cards I'll pick some up.

Pens from my hotel room and those Keno crayons/markers.

If there's any cool looking designs on matchbooks then I'll take one.

I save all my trip itenaries (air & hotel) every few years so I know how much I use to pay for my trips to Vegas. It's not really a collection just something I keep for a while then eventually toss to record how much trips cost each year.

Any unique ads from those Las Vegas magazines they put in the hotel room. Example: TI Club Tangerine ad with the vintage looking burlesque chick posing.

Other paper media such as unique show programs (my favorites being Follies Bergere and Jubilee).

I try to collect unique things only, not common stuff, because if I were to collect everything with no rhyme or reason it would get out of control and half of it I would end up tossing and wasting. I don't like to take stuff just to take stuff.

I seem to have a little bit of everything that I've accumulated over the years. Plenty of Match books, old and new, ashtrays old with casino names, promotional items like t-shirts, picture frames, tote bags, coffee and travel mugs, a couple of commemorative chips, plenty of players slot cards, key chains, and room keys both from casino's of the past and present. Shot glasses, sun visors, jackets, and even a slot players glove. I almost forgot the photographs, with and without souvenir frames. I am running out of space, but I can't seem to throw away any of it and I don't know why. My original goal was to just collect lots of winnings. I ended up with lots of great memories. ;)

Our main collection is unique drink ware, including the Paris "Balloon" ceramic drink holder, Excalibur Tournament of Kings beer stein, Luxor smoked glass extra tall liqueur glass, the "New Aladdin Hotel and Casino" mugs (which were from the original imploded building - where we stayed on our first visit to Vegas ever in 1987 - well, it was newly renovated then! LOL), Bally's tall shiny Daquiri cups in both Gold and Red, and a tall blue space-age fluted glass from Quark's bar.

Other neat odds and ends we've collected from Vegas include: the souvenir menu from Quark's bar when it first opened; programs from Jubilee, Follies Bergere and Phantom of the Opera; romantic photos snapped of the two of us by the in-house photographers at Stratosphere, Harrah's comedy club, and Follies Bergere; photos from Quark's gift shop including myself as Seven of Nine and my husband as a member of the Enterprise Crew (next generation). Oh, and I bought the Luxor nightgown with the cat posing next to the Egyptian cat years ago and it's still my favourite nightgown. Yes, the souvenir hucksters have made a mint off of me.

We also inherited a matchbox collection from my husband's uncle. They appear to be from the 1960s/70s and are from Vegas and Hawaii.

Like my sister mentioned above, I collect the beads from Rio. It all started when hubby and I participated and rode one of the floats and they gave us what seemed like hundreds of strands to wear, and hundreds more to throw. They were so beautiful and colors so vibrant, I tried to think of some use for them. Then I had the idea to hang them on my Christmas tree like tinsel. They are really shiny and the Christmas lights reflect off the beads making the tree look like it has thousands more lights. Now, whenever we go, I bring home the beads I collect from each trip and add them to my collection! I've gotten so many compliments on them...It really does look beautiful and, of course, also is a nice reminder of my home away from home!

With changing attitudes about smoking, match books may become the next item that will be hard to find. Swizzle sticks are also becoming harder to find.I try to get a $1 chip from every casino i visit.I also go for the silver strike coins and will pick up the special souvenir chips when availible. It seems as if the casinos know they have a good thing going, the souvenir chips use to to be in $1, $5 denominations .now most are in $5, $25 denom. LOL

I loved Johanna's response! Unfortunately, that could be mine, too<g>. We collect silver strikes, used casino cards and refrigerator magnets. My favorite collectable was the lighted Las Vegas sign...I made a display with a Dept. 56 Casino Riverboat (for those unfamiliar with Dept 56 they make porcelain and ceramic lighted buildings) using the Las Vegas sign, some palm trees and water....it's the Lake Mead casino! When I light it up, it's almost like being there.

Haha they sell the Welcome to Las Vegas signs at Spencer gifts too? Thanks I'll look into that! If that's the case that's one thing less I'll have to lug home this summer, so thanks for the tip! Now that you guys mention it I think I seen them on eBay too but I can't remember.

Oh yeah I know the Wal Greens in Vegas definately have them. I was in some convienence store Downtown last year and noticed them. Whatever that store is across from Neonopolis... might have been a Rite Aid or Wal Greens.

I have an odd assortment of items, such as pens, matchbooks, hotel keys, cars, old slot club cards, etc.

I also keep the toiletries - but a friend collects them for a local church which supplies sandwiches and toiletries to the needy - so when I get enough....I give them to him to bring to the church.

My favorites are hotel keys, which are on my bulletin board at work, and do not disturb signs - my fav. do not disturb is from Paris LAs Vegas, which says it in French!

I always try to find some money to collect from out there but I seem to have a hard time doing it. Can anyone help me find the right one to get it at?

I collect the $1 chips. I never really put any time or effort into it, but I will keep a $1 chip from the casinos where I gamble.

I also buy 5 or 6 decks of casino cards every trip, but I always use them so I don't really collect them.

I also get Coffee Mugs every year if I can find one I like that I don't have.

I too collect matchbooks. When I was young my grandparents had a big bowl of matchboooks from places they had visited. I adopted the idea and have a big vase with matchbooks from all over, with many Vegas ones of course.

Could someone figure out how to use the hole in the slot club cards to sew them together? If so, I think I could put together a 'birdman of alcatraz' coat of many colors on the cheap.

I collect chips (metal & clay), matchbooks, pens, hotel room keys and slot cards. My husband collects shot glasses. Did you know that you cannot get a Riviera shot glass. All their shops are leased and there is no Riviera casino gift shop.

I collect chips from the Hard Rock Hotel. Doesn't matter what denomination is. It started when my brother was going back to LA and we had one chip left and gave it to me. It is a $5 chip and ever since then every time I go to Vegas and I go to the Hard Rock Hotel and pick up a chip.

Eileen and I stopped by the Frontier to look for souveniers and all we were able to find were some Frontier pens. Everything else was either sold or removed from circulation.

Everything else was gone. They were still using the Frontier brand of cards and chips.

We even stayed a while and played Pai Gow and a few slot machines.

I still have 2 Riviera coffee mugs that they gave us when signing up for their players card about 3 years ago. Also a 5oth anniversary Riviera windbreaker jacket.

I also have some Riviera coffee mugs, a hat, matches, and playing cards, but those are mostly things you get from either signing up for a slot card or playing their $40 for $20 game.

I collect $5 tokens from the different casinos. I try to get the basic token and stay away from the commemorative ones unless they mark some sort of anniversary for the casino. My mom plays the silver strike machines and gives me the token if she hits one. I must have about 50 of those.
