View Full Version : How do you win big on slots?

My wife and I have been gambling for about 6 years now, mostly LV and Tunica.
We constantly speak with people who do great at the slots. We seldom hit jackpots and when we do they are small. If you are a slot player and you're winning thousands or more on your trips tell me how your playing. Are you staying on certain machines? How often do you switch machines? Please share your own secrets! Thanks

I keep one hand and one foot on the floor at all times, and hit the "play" button with my big toe . . . . . . :D

This doesn't always work, but every year for the last 6 years since I have been using this system, I always have several W2G's at the end of the year from my slot winnings. As I stated in another forum, one year hubby and I had $22,400 in taxable winnings.

Most machines pay off in cycles. When you are playing you have probably noticed that they hang up a little every once in a while and you have to hit the spin button several times to get it to spin (you really don't have to keep beating on it, just wait a few seconds and it will start again). This is the start of a new cycle. There are usually 99-101 spins to a cycle. The RNG (random numerator generator which is operated by a computer chip inside the machine) picks a cycle and runs with it. The first 4 to 6 spins of the cycle will usually produce a small win. If nothing comes up after a dozen or so spins, you are probably in a bad cycle and you might as well move on. This does not mean that you will hit a lot in a hot cycle; that RNG is always working within the cycle, but your chances are better.

Now I do not play full coins all the time. If I get a win, I play full coins for about 6 spins and if nothing, go to 1 coin until I get another small win, then go to full coins again for a few spins. As a rule, if it hits once it will hit again in a few spins. Sometimes you may hit a pretty good one with only one coin, but, gee, you're probably still ahead. This system can give you a little more play time and chances to win if you are at a machine that you feel comfortable with.

These are a few of our winning instances: Over $3200 at a quarter progressive, $3,000 at a $1 5x , $3600 at a multidenomination triple diamond, $8100 at a $5 9x machine, and more, plus a lot of smaller pots.

Our son used this system last summer at a Lousiana riverboat. Went in with about $50 in his pocket. Played mostly quarter triple diamond machines. Walked out with over $800.

I have been disappointed a few times but only actually regretted one time that I put only 1 coin in the machine. I had been winning a little on this machine and was trucking along putting in 1 coin and had gone 30 or 40 spins and then it hit. I just sat there stunned. (It was a 50 cent 2 coin machine.) I won $750 which was nice, but that $2,000 jackpot it would have paid would been a lot nicer. :(

Something to remember about slots. The smaller the top payoff, the more likely it is to pay some mid-range pots. Double diamond, triple diamond, and others that pay similarly across the top will give you a better chance to come out ahead. The big payoff machines do not pay many in-between pots. If you play a big progressive, or say a 10X machine, don't waste much money or time on it. If you do win something substantial after a few spins, you should walk away, fast.

That's my method, and I'm sticking to it. (Hope IGT doesn't reset their computers.)

Vegas Vickie claims to be able to feel a slot machine and tell if it will pay off in a few minutes of play or not.

She rarely plays anything larger than nickles unless the feeling is real strong. Once a machine pays anything, she cashes out and moves on. No big wins but a steady 100% of her gaming budget each outing. "Small wins build up!" she says and "Never give the casino any of their money back!".

I play pretty similar to 'sonntex'...I believe in the cycles and have been
at the right machine at the right time to take advantage of it.
I will usually play full coin most of the time...think ya got the RNG down or not.....it can still be surprisingly unpredictable (many times for the 'good')
but to me, the odds say play MAX/MAX. Slots are still one of the poorest
game choices we choose in a casino.

It's great to win, but you're just paying for entertainment so KEEP IT FUN.
Play for the fun, the money, and NOT THE HOUSE, know when to walk away.

I'll have to try your system on my next trip--T-10 and counting. I was wondering if you ever play the interactive slots i.e. Wheel of Fortune/ Monopoly and if the machines work in the same fashion.

I have tried wheel of fortune a few times, but don't have much luck. It's one of those big payout progressives and they just don't pay well. They are fun, however.

Never played monopoly. I don't like video machines. Never have figured them out. I play only reel slots.

If you like nickel slots, there is a bank of red-white-and blue 5 coin nickel reels at NYNY that I have won on. They are on a wall toward the back across from a bar/grill(can't remember the name). I won $240 once with only $20 in. They are very popular so I would assume they pay pretty well.

Hope you have good luck.

There's two type of slots...the old 'reel' type...Double Diamonds, Red White & Blue, Wild Cherry, Haywire, Wheel Of Fortune, etc. and the new 'video' slots with the two rows of numbers you select from (with all those crazy paylines)
...sounds like you haven't play them much.

Rule of thumb, ALWAYS PLAY MAX LINES on the top row of buttons. There can be 5,9,20 or more (30 on STAR WARS)...always play MAX LINES.
The lower row is how much money you want to bet on each line. After choosing what denomination you want to play, this choice is yours.
...and in re. to all those crazy paylines kriscrossing the screen at the
end of a spin...I don't even bother to try and figure them out anymore.
YOU KNOW WHEN YOU WIN/YOU KNOW WHEN YOU LOOSE!...LOL

Have tried them several times. Playing 45 nickels is $2.25. I figure I might as well play a 2 coin $1 machine. Odds are better.

How do you know when you hit a new cycle? Videos don't seem to operate the same as the reels.

i hate slot machines. poker, video poker, craps. i haven't played blackjack in a few years since they started to change up the rules. i got tired of searching for a table that offered decent rules.

i play the slots for fun. every once in a while. mostly just get a bucket of quarters and walk down the rows putting a few coins in the ones i like.

Step 1 - Approach machine that give you the right "vibe"

Step 2 - Keep your money in your pocket

Step 3 - Walk - no, run - away!

Just kidding.... I know of two different million+ dollar winners personally, so it does happen..... Best of luck!

major jackpots are few and far between. that is why i say: if you want to win, cash in. some people recommend cashing in when you are 40 credits ahead. me? i play with $10. if i double it, i cash in. sometimes i get lucky and my $10 turns into a $50 or $100 rather than the $20 i'm happy with. after all, if i had a machine in my kitchen that turned $10 bills into $20 bills, i'd stay home and make money all day. so why not approach a slot machine the same way. don't be greedy. besides, if you do put in a $10 bill and cash in for $20, then you have $10 of house money to play.

Amelan001, that's amazing! Of course we all have heard about it, and that's what keeps casino owners in the money, right? The "American Dream" cashed out all at once in a town full of losers!

Here's my story, heard through a friend. He was walking through a casino two years ago and heard jackpot bells going off. Looking around, he saw a young girl sitting in front of a machine with some friends. She was wearing a pin that said, "I turned 21 today!" and they were there celebrating her birthday. The payout on the machine? 2.2 Million. Happy birthday indeed.

I will say this. If you ever win that kind of jackpot (you won't, get over it), I'd say you have two options. 1.) Spend every last dime of it while you are still in Vegas 2.) Go home and never touch gambling ever again. If you don't do one of these two things, I'd say there's a 90 percent chance you'll become a compulsive gambler and end up losing all you've got. Don't believe me? I'll bet you. C'mon, I'll give you 2 to 1 odds.

[QUOTE=Lousal] I'll try to be brief, this may sound unbelievable but I have been to Atlantic City (Caesars) for 10 weeks in a row. Saturday until Sunday afternoon usually. My husband and I are big fans of 10x's Slingos we have won lots of money on them. We only play 25 cent machines. But after playing for 5 years now we started to try a few other slots mainly 12x's. Now here is the thing after winning every single week and I mean literally bringing home anywhere from 1,500 dollars to this past weekend over $9,000 hitting on 3 slots all within 2 hours. I am beginning to wonder if I should write a book (lol). And I mean in addition to my original money. My husband and I play like this, we will start on a machine usually putting a $20 if nothing happens we will put a $100 bill in. If still nothing happens we usually will put another $40 or $50 depending what the machine is doing. Totalling up to 170 even up to $200 per machine. If the machine is dead meaning no turnout we will then walk off, but the heres the catch we will follow that machine all day long. I will watch people play and see how much they are putting in, if the machine is still dead I will go back later on maybe 6 or 7 hours later and put another $100 in and I swear it usually works it comes around and Bingo...or should I say SLINGO. This past weekend I put $140 in a machine, my husband went back 2 hours later and put in another $100 still nothing. I went back about 1 an hour later and I got 10 10 10 winning $2,500.00. Eventually the machine comes around, but this is not a sure thing it has also backfired to where it don't hit. But usually it works, we also play 12x's alot and have done very well on those to I won $5,400 (21,800 coins) 3 weeks in a row not the same actual machine but a 12 time machine. I put in $80 the first week, the second week between me and my husband we threw a total of $500 in one machine throughout the whole day not including what ever everyone else dumped into it. I watched it do absolutely nothing all day long because we stay in the same area all the time because we can see all the machines we like to play pretty much from all around. So anyway after a day long of this machine doing nothing I walked over to it put $30 in and won $5,400 and this is not the first time this has happened. So my theory is this if you work a machine and follow it a while chances are you will get some sort of return. I can say one thing for sure why most people dont do well on slots, because I see this over and over over as I said I play a machine through sometimes I am on a slot for hours and I will watch people walk over to a slot and throw a couple of coins in or put a $20 in and walk away and then say "I don't understand how people hit on slots" what I don't understand is how do they expect to win when they put 9 coins in a machine. I mean I have seen people hit and get lucky as a matter of fact happened to my husband where we walked over to a machine and took one spin and hit for $2,500 but it is very rare. You need to work a machine so don't be afraid to put a $100 in or even a little more as I said dosent always work but if you watch it throughout the time you are there you will be able to see if the machine has hit or not. Why should I put money into a machine that I have no idea if it has hit or not when I know I put excess amount of dollars into a machine that I already invested in. In the end over the past 2 months I have w2's in the amount of $34,000 no lie. I can't beleive it myself as long as I keep winning every week I can keep going back. So let me know how you do.. Good Luck and one last thing every slot hits twice, if you win dont be afraid to dump back at up $200 because I can guarantee you it will hit again. I have won twice on the same machine tons of times, the machine will remain hot a while then die completely down and then boom it hits again. Everyone I tell that hits stays on and hit again.

I know what you mean about people hitting a few spins and moving on.

I have my system which I have posted earlier, but I almost always put in $100 or so give the machine a chance to get into a paying cycle. If it seems really cold, I move on and come back later after some one else has lost $100 or so in it and try again. I have gotten many good payouts on the second time around.

Stories/Theories/Systems on playing Slot Machines could go on for ever.
Go ahead...write a book, join the ranks of all the other Slot authors out
there...THEY ARE winning $$$ from every sucker who buys the book.

New 'gamers' are coming of age every day, the old stories and myths are
new to them, their curiousity take over and BOOM! the 'HOUSE' has
a new customer asking/wondering the same questions over and over and
over again...THIS TOPIC WILL NEVER, EVER DIE (and the HOUSE loves it)
SLOTS are one of the most popular SUCKER BET games a casino offers us
and next to Roulette or 'the BIG wheel', one of your worst gaming choices...always will be...but they're fun!

Winning events are always happening on Slot Machines...it's the nature
of the RNG which is cycling hundreds of times per second and then
STOPS/FREEZES/DECIDES if that 'Spin' is a win or not the minute you
hit 'SPIN REELS' or pull a handle........the spinning screens, the jumping
Double Diamond Deluxes', the crisscrossed paylines on video slots, are all
just there to entertain us...the machine decided seconds ago the molment
you hit 'SPIN REELS' if you're gonna win or not...and doesn't care one way
or the other.

SLOTS are fun, you sometimes win, most times not, but the 'chance' keeps
you entertained and playing. Higher denominations are your best-odds of
machines to play and the lower jackpots are your best-odds of winning
something.

Systems, cycles, hot, loose, voodoo, due to hit, try again hours later,
all are part of the lure and myth of SLOT MACHINES that 'tweek' our
minds, simulate our chances of winning, and keep us FEEDING the machines.
RIGHT MACHINE AT THE RIGHT TIME will always be the winning and ONLY
combination that works in the long term. Play for yourself, the fun and
the money, NOT THE HOUSE and know when to walk away.

I would like to respond to Gregrio. I agree with you 100 percent that its all about timing. But you are wrong when you say that its slots are the worst game to bet. In the past 5 or 6 years I have won over $35,000 a year. One year I had $62,000 in W2's and thats not including all the $500, 1000, and 1200 shots I won because they are not taxed. My accountant was astonished. Now I want you to know that I only play quarters and when I make my trip usually once a month except this past summer I have been there many weeks in a row. Because I have been doing so well taking home a minimum of $1,500 but most weeks much much more, I can afford to go back because I am winning so much. When I go I usually take anywhere from 700 to 1000 and I don't always win big, sometimes I win small shots of a few hundred here and there and that keeps me going. But I have been on a streak these past weeks because of my method. There is simply no other explanation, the timing, the rng, the whatever you want to call it but the fact of the matter is I work the machine sometimes I will go back and forth all day long and even dump a few hundred in usually around $ 200 or more and I have to say that 7 out of 10 times it pays out. How else can I describe winning every single week for almost 3 months. I obviously am doing something right. Yes it's hard to beleive I have this discussion with my family all the time. In fact I have gotten into numerous arguments because they cant believe it either. But unfortunetaly I can't prove it to you but I have showed everyone who doubts me the W2's and I have to admit its quite impressive and I shut them up, of course raising the question how can I always win. So we can call it luck or we can say anything we want but remember I am laughing all the way to the bank.

Congratulations 'tigrace507'!...may your luck continue.
I'm also fortunate enough to visit regularly, every 3d month.
For almost two years I had a couple machines that I felt I could
count on for consistant payouts...always played 'em, and won alot.

Considering the RNG has a variety of winning combinations that last
over a three year period and drift in and out of positive event cycles,
I was lucky and hit alot...THEN, one trip, the machines (who must have
been union)...went on 'break'...now they're just hungry and I don't feed
them any more.

I'd write down the numbers of my machines to keep track of them also, just
in case they get moved around the floor from time to time...these guys
just moved into some negitive cycles and I moved more into VP.
I still play alot of Slots, but like the control of video poker alot more.
SPIN REELS, DEAL AGIAIN, HAVE FUN, GOOD LUCK!

Hello again thanks for the good luck. You mention you play video poker I see lots of people winning on those machines also. In fact on my last trip I watched a woman hit twice for $2,000 on the same machine which by the way happens to me all the time. I don't know if people realize that all machines hit twicee. I never walk off a mchine when hitting usually after around 150 to 200 dollars back it hits again. But as I was saying I am not sure what the stratgery is for those machines. I tryed to play them and know how but I am not pleased with their payouts. You have to play 8 coins usually for a top prize of 4000 coins ($1,000). So I figure best to play a ten time or 12 times machine for 75 cents with a top payout of 10,000 coins or 50,000 coins for the 12 time machine. My question is what machine is best to play for the video poker machines and which demoniation? Thanks

10-15-2005, 06:51 AM
The topic of VIDEO POKER could be a whole thread in itself...and maybe should be.
Slots are fun and keep us entertained, you may have theories about
the way you play, but the fact of the matter is you have no 'choice'
in the outcome of playing slots. They're metal, plastic and lights and
are totally controled by their chip.

VIDEO POKER gives me a bit of a choice in my outcome. I am a part of
the decision making process. The machine is continuously shuffleing the
cards, and after dealing the first hand to me...THEN IT'S MY TURN.
I choose which cards to hold, then turn it back to the machine to deal
me up that winning hand based on my (hopefully) educated choice on
which combination of hands I'm playing for...jacks or better, three of a
kind, two pair, streight, flush...ROYAL FLUSH! etc.
It's that choice that separates VP from SLOTS.

Learning all the combinations/CHOICES in Video Poker takes alot of practice and
maybe best left to 'Propeller Headed Mathematicians' (which I'm certainly not)
but logical, simple, stategies can be learned pretty quick and before you
know it...you're playing.

Again, PRACTICE is the name of the game. I like DOUBLE BONUS POKER.
Probably the most universal/popular game many folks to start out with
is JACKS OR BETTER.

BOB DANCER is kinda one of the main Video Poker Gurus out there.....
I got one of his learning CD's years ago. It's a great tool to learn and
practice with at home in between trips.

'Dealer's Choice' is a gaming catalog with all sorts of gambling stuff...
Some items are basicly toys...best used for gifts, stocking stuffer, fun little
entertainment games...others are legitimate learning tools. I prefer the CD's
as aposed to learning books. 1.800.969.0711 Call and ask them to send you
a free catalog.(I hope the number is still good, got it off my 2002 catalog)

Their website IS good. To check out BOB DANCERS "WIN POKER" CD,
go to: www.casinocenter.com
'click' on Products to the Left...
'click' Software
scroll down to BOB DANCER and his "WIN POKER" CD.
...you can order by phone also if you like.

The neat thing about DANCER's CD is that it looks and plays just like the
games in a casino. All the games are there to choose from and practice
with, you can choose the 'learning screen' which pops up a 'notice' after
you've make YOUR choice as to which cards to hold.....with Bob's CHOICE.
It will tell you MAJOR ERROR or MINOR ERROR and lets you go back, re-think
your decision.

GOOD PAY SCHEDUALS in Video Poker are getting harder and harder to find.
Local casinos seem to have your better choices....you just won't find 'em
at the big Strip casinos.

Once Apon A Time, In A Casino Far Far Away...........................

you used to find 9/6 Bonus Poker/Jacks or Better....not any more.
The 9/6 pay scheduals now are placed on the Double Bonus Poker machines
and the good 'ol Jacks or Better game has considerably lower pay scheduals.

Next time you try Video Poker...look for the better pay scheduals. You can
have a bank of 4,5,6 machines, side by side, all with different levels of pay...
...obviously, you want to find the highest one to play.

The 'FULL HOUSE' and 'FLUSH' paylines are a good judge to look at and determin which machine to play. A Double Bonus Poker Machine that sports
a FULL HOUSE 10 and a FLUSH 7, would be called a 10/7 pay schedual and
THAT'S THE MACHINE YOU WANT TO PLAY...too bad you don't find many of
those machines any more...many show 9/6 these days.
Point is....find the highest paying machines, pick the denomination that's right for you ( I like quarters) but remember...if your 'bankroll' can handle it, the higher denomination machines are your best odds. (any game you choose)

I'll always play the SLOTS...Alternating between slots and VP is a nice
variety.
SPIN REELS and keep your fingers crossed....
SHUFFLE UP 'N DEAL and 'THINK' some (and keep your fingers crossed LOL!)

The last few times I've walked out of Vegas with a couple of thousand and not bet a lot of money. I play a machine 3-4 times and if nothing happens I walk on to another. I also look at the machines and see if they appeal to me or call my name. Some machines just draw you right in. I think one of the secrets is to walk away if it's doing nothing. And if you win anything over $100.00 cash out and then continue to play but at least you have your $100.00 in your pocket because if you keep it in the machine it will take it back everytime

It's funny because yesterday was my husbands birthday. We celebrated and then decided we would go to Atlantic City Caesars. I am one of those that feel that you need to work a machine most times. But last night I walked over to a 12x machine and put 20 dollars in it. I then got a 12x cherry giving me a 144 credits, a few spins later got a 12x with mixed bars now giving me 180 coins I now had about 100 dollars in a blink of an eye. Now most people would of taken the 100 and ran, not me I opted to stick it out. Thank God I did I was down to 94 coins and I suddenly hit for a double bar 12 12 giving me a $2,160 payout. I then stuck it out dumping another $120 back in and the machine had completely died out. I mean I put back $120 dollars in less then 15 minutes. I decided I would not give it anymore before it suddenly paid me again with a 12 12 triple bar for a return of $2,700. Well needless to say I was flabergasted I was there a total of 30 minutes and I was up $4,800. So sometimes you can invest very little and get lucky but its rare. Well anyway I just wanted to share my wins, because I myself love to hear stories of people winning.

I'm not stuttering, this is actually a repeat of my answer about slot denominations from another post, but at the risk of repeating myself:

HERE'S THE PLAN:

Start at nickles til you have some of the house's money to play on, then move to quarters and try to get lucky again, winning enough to graduate to dollars, and if lucky, move up again! If you lose back to your original stake, STOP and take it back to nickles and start all over again! Often this will work and take the risk out of gambling higher denomination machines...it's much less painful to spin that $5 machine when it's the house's $5! If you are on a run, you may parlay 20 bucks into a grand or more throughout a night of play.

But that's just me.....

My thing is I get what is called a "good little machine" and just play it. My other thing is - do I cash out the big win and move on? Or stay on the same winner. Seems like whenever I cash out, I move on and then nothing!!! The wished I stayed at the same machine. I suppose I could stop playing altogether, but what fun is that? lol
