Hi
I am coming over to Vegas just after new year and wondered about what it was like during the first week of January - is it dead there or is there plenty going on. I am from U.K. but been to Vegas about 12 times but always in summer.

You will find many of the Headliner shows may be closed but Vegas will be far from "Dead," it might not be as crowded but there will still be plenty to do.

Typically, after New Years is when Las Vegas visitation is at it's slowest. But that isn't a bad thing as everything is more accessible such as buffet lines, access to slots and table games and restaurant reservations.

lynnm - the week imediately following following New Year's is usually pretty slow; if there is a slow time in Vegas. You should also be able to get some decent hotel prices. May the cards be with you. Tunaman

Lynnm,

Fear not... I have visited Vegas in January and February more than any other months, and I always have a great time! The weather is (usually) wonderful, although it can rain, and you shouldn't need more than a light jacket at night.

The pools are mostly closed, also. But hey, who's here to swim?

might be on the cooler side also. So dress warm. Where are you staying?

I've only been to Vegas in December - January once. It was cool to cold most of the time we were there and we were glad we brought some warm clothing with us.

I've only been to Vegas once in January (about 1/3-1/11/95). It was cool to cold most of the time I was there, so I'd advise you to bring some warm clothing. As Steve said, you should have no problem gambling or eating when or where you want to do either.

Our experience has always been great in January. ESPECIALLY if you want to see some of the newer Hotels, and be able to get around on the Strip with a little more ease..We are usually comped for the New Year's Eve Party, and then stay over a few days afterwards, and totally enjoy the "Quietness"...after the hustle, and bustle of New Year's..! Enjoy!! :)

:) Sin City is never dead. In fact, the week after New Year's is great. You'll miss the craziness and the tremendous crowds. Many of our friends come to visit the week after New Year's.

We have been many times in the winter and the fun is still there. The weather can range from warm to downright cold, so bring a warm jacket and gloves. We have found that most headliner shows are dark between Christmas and New Years but there are still plenty of great variety/comedy shows playing. As Steve mentioned, the crowds have thinned, but that means you have easier access to lots of the attractions/restaurants/buffets/tours.

The town will be very very busy the first weekend of January 5th-8th because of the Consumer electronics show that draws over 130,000 people. In addition the AVN awards the Porno show is going on that weekend with an extra 15,000 ladies and attendees. It may be a hard week to find a room for a good deal. However the town will be very crazy and busy that week. So you want crazy you may want to go that week, or wait until the second week when the town will much slower.

Do not forget your winter clothing--Gloves, scarf, ect. It is really cold and the cold wind can make it unbearable plus the casinos usually are super warm. Have a good winning trip.

Just a thought to add to Steve's post as we will be doing this very thing. Usually we come in on the first or second of January in prep for the CES convention which starts that Thursday after New Years. This year with all of the events leading up to this convention we decided to oh what the heck and see New Year's Eve in Vegas. We bought the airline tickets and started the hunt for a room for a few nites before checking into the Jockey Club for a week. Luckily we found the Barbary Coast to be pretty reasonable for the 30th, 31st and 1st. It appears so far that there are just a few shows "dark" for the monday and tuesday right after New Years. There are not a lot of headliners but there is enough entertainment for the CES conventioners and also the big Adult Show Convention is at the Sands and Venetian the same time. So you will have about 170,000+ people there that week and you won't be alone. We'll be there! Have a safe trip.

March is usually my first trip of the new year (I make it 5 times a year)...and I go for the shows.
I know many take the holiday hiatus before Christmas and then back for
New Years.
IF you're looking for shows and IF you need the 1-800 numbers for the properties or seating suggestions for the shows just ask (be specific if you can) OTHER THAN THAT, Vegas just doesn't slow down much!

Plenty going on all the time. Don't worry about Vegas being "dead"

Slower times are best because crowds and traffic are more manageable than during the peak times. It is also easier to get good show tickets.

In January you can also expect cool temps (probably 60's during the day and high 30's to low 40's at night. - farenheit, of course) Plan accordingly.

January in Las Vegas is cool to cold. This is high desert climate. At night it can get down right cold---low 30's, but like they so ---low humidity. Most of the shows will not be closed because of vacations (that happen in mid to late December). You can go sking on Mt. Charleston about 45-60 minutes away. Most pools are closed but some will be open (they're heated). Great time to explore the dessert! You will be able to do just about anything else you would want to do in Vagas in the Summer. Hotel rates are general lower right after New Years. Enjoy your time in Las Vegas!

The CES (Consumer Electronic Show) is January 5, 6, 7 & 8. Las Vegas is very busy during those times and hotel rates are at their highest, with maybe only New Year's Eve being higher.

What dates are you going to be there and do you have a hotel reservation yet?

How about over the christmas holiday? We usually go to Biloxi, :( But it looks like an extra Vegas trip this year. I understand about the big acts being off(we have seen most anyhow) Any help on how the crouds will be? any casinos in particular that have more going on then the others during the holiday? Thanks in advance for your help :)
