I usually tip a $5 chip once every 1/2 hour or so to my dealer regardless of whether I am up or down chips but when I feel lucky I place another chip behind mine in the circle for the dealer to "play". If I win, he/she wins. Are there any dealers out there that can tell me what system they would prefer as a tipping method?

I AM NOT A DEALER, BUT my guess is they are happy to get any tip so do what you think is best.
Want to work the comps while tipping try this idea. Get five $1.00 chips, make your normal bet say $5.00 and put the $1.00 chip on the top of your bet. Your $5.00 bet just became $6.00. You have just increased your average bet. think comps, average bet x time played = a slightly larger comp. If you lose you lose. If you win you now have two $5.00 chips and two $1.00 chips, give one of the $1.00 chips to the dealer, make your normal bet and put the other $1.00 chip on top of your bet. With luck you can last a long time tipping the dealer this way. The dealer can figure out what your doing very quickly and doesn't mind being in on the action. Don't forget to put the $1.00 chip to your double down bets. If you win the double down the dealer gets two $1.00 chips. When the five $1.00 chips are gone wait a while and do it again. The pit boss likes to see his dealers earning tips and maybe just maybe the pit boss rates your play at an average of $6.00. on the rating card for the entire session, and with the double down bets maybe he rates you at a $7.00 average per hand.
I used to put the $1.00 chip on the side as a bet for the dealer. If I won the dealer got two $1.00 chips. Then I read a book on working the comps and changed the way I tip.

When I play Pai Gow, I make a $1.00 bet for the dealer on every 5th hand. Sometimes the dealer would move the chip and place it on the bonus bet to increase their odds. Now that's gambling!

I like that idea!! I'll buy $1 chips from now on and use this method. Thanks a lot.

I think about tipping the dealers when I tip the cocktail waitress. I order a drink, tip the waitress $1.00, then place a $1.00 bet for the dealer. I always remember to tip the cocktail waitress, so if I tie my dealer tips to that, I always remember to tip the dealer.
