Left on July 30 for 5 nights with sister & Mom for Mom's 75th birthday. We stayed at the Golden Nugget this time, and let me say, from here on out that's where I'll be staying!
We used to stay at the Four Queens (years ago) and always enjoyed it. However when it started going downhill we moved to the strip to Flamingo. I didn't think I'd ever become a downtowner again, but wrong...We decided on downtown due to Mom being able to walk to various casinos easily (unlike strip).
I cannot say enough about the Nugget. I loved it soooo much that husband & I will be going out for the week of Thanksgiving and staying there again.
The weather was hot, but being on Fremont St. we didn't feel the heat much due to the light show cover.
As for gambling, let's just say I DID NOT come home with all that I took, but did have a few nice hits. At the Freemont one day I was playing $.25 Double Diamond Delux and for the first time I lined up the DD symbols! (we call them snake eyes). That was a nice $400. Hit a few hundred on some dollar machines; straight flush on 3 card poker; and some nice wins on blackjack. Won enough to keep me playing but not make me rich!!
We ate at the Four Queens (Magnolia Room) a few times. They have a great breakfast for something like $4.95 and good prime rib for $7.95. Also ate at Tony Roma's one evening. Had several shrimp cocktails ($.99) from the Golden Gate as well as some sandwiches from the Golden Gate. They have really good sandwiches. In fact, night before departure walked down there and got 3 pastrami sandwiches to take and eat on the plane. We had brought baggies and this worked out perfectly.
Didn't go into Mermaids or the other joint (with all the beads), but spent a lot of time in the Nugget, Four Queens, Binions, Fitz. & Freemont. I don't particularly care for the Plaza anymore. Years ago it used to be a great place, but....
I never felt unsafe or afraid at any hour walking up & down Freemont St. There were police on bikes at all hours watching. There were a few street people but they never, never bothered me or asked me for a dime. It was very clean and nice.
In the evening Freemont comes alive. The Sax player is fantastic and to watch the guy spray painting pictures from cans of spray paint is awsome. What a talented guy.
As I said, it was a great trip. We didn't visit the strip once, which I did miss. When hub. & I go in Nov. we're renting a car for the week so I'm sure we'll visit the strip a few times.
However, I'll be staying at the Nugget again. Lovely rooms, safes in room, clean and courteous staff. Awsome.
