Left on July 30 for 5 nights with sister & Mom for Mom's 75th birthday. We stayed at the Golden Nugget this time, and let me say, from here on out that's where I'll be staying!

We used to stay at the Four Queens (years ago) and always enjoyed it. However when it started going downhill we moved to the strip to Flamingo. I didn't think I'd ever become a downtowner again, but wrong...We decided on downtown due to Mom being able to walk to various casinos easily (unlike strip).

I cannot say enough about the Nugget. I loved it soooo much that husband & I will be going out for the week of Thanksgiving and staying there again.

The weather was hot, but being on Fremont St. we didn't feel the heat much due to the light show cover.

As for gambling, let's just say I DID NOT come home with all that I took, but did have a few nice hits. At the Freemont one day I was playing $.25 Double Diamond Delux and for the first time I lined up the DD symbols! (we call them snake eyes). That was a nice $400. Hit a few hundred on some dollar machines; straight flush on 3 card poker; and some nice wins on blackjack. Won enough to keep me playing but not make me rich!!

We ate at the Four Queens (Magnolia Room) a few times. They have a great breakfast for something like $4.95 and good prime rib for $7.95. Also ate at Tony Roma's one evening. Had several shrimp cocktails ($.99) from the Golden Gate as well as some sandwiches from the Golden Gate. They have really good sandwiches. In fact, night before departure walked down there and got 3 pastrami sandwiches to take and eat on the plane. We had brought baggies and this worked out perfectly.

Didn't go into Mermaids or the other joint (with all the beads), but spent a lot of time in the Nugget, Four Queens, Binions, Fitz. & Freemont. I don't particularly care for the Plaza anymore. Years ago it used to be a great place, but....

I never felt unsafe or afraid at any hour walking up & down Freemont St. There were police on bikes at all hours watching. There were a few street people but they never, never bothered me or asked me for a dime. It was very clean and nice.

In the evening Freemont comes alive. The Sax player is fantastic and to watch the guy spray painting pictures from cans of spray paint is awsome. What a talented guy.

As I said, it was a great trip. We didn't visit the strip once, which I did miss. When hub. & I go in Nov. we're renting a car for the week so I'm sure we'll visit the strip a few times.

However, I'll be staying at the Nugget again. Lovely rooms, safes in room, clean and courteous staff. Awsome.

When you return be sure and book Gordie Brown at the Nuggett. $4$ the best show in Vegas. Book now and I'll bet you get fantastic seating.

We stayed at the Nugget in 2002, and had a great time. The sports book needs work, although there's something pretty cool about watching the lines change on the dry erase boards. The pool area was nice, the room was clean and updated, and the casino was well lit and comfortable. . . . .The table limits at the Nugget are always the highest on Fremont, but it's a pleasant place (at least it was in 2002) to gamble.

LadyLuk, are those 99 cent shrimp cocktails kind of nasty? or are they good?

Dave...the 99 cent shrimp cocktails, in my opinion, are really good. So much so that we ate several of them while were there. Looking forward to having more come Thanksgiving!

We had the shrimp cocktails last visit - really fresh and good. They sell so much shrimp - that's a good recommendation.

Glad to read the recommendation to see Gordie Brown. We already have reservations to see him at the end of Oct.

Has anyone seen the Lon Bronson Band at Golden Nugget at 10 p.m.?

The Lon Bronson All Star Band is another show you are going to enjoy! They are a funk, rock, R & B, jazz "old time Vegas" band (12 piece) with great vocals. You'll enjoy this one a lot too!

Here is their website link for more info:

I think it's the 2nd best show I've ever seen. He's excellent! The first of course, was Mr. Tony Bennett. :)

Glad you enjoyed the Nugget. Having stayed in various places their check-in staff is among the nicest and most efficient. On a Friday afternoon it took very little time to check in even though there was huge line.
I agree with your comments about the Plaza, I hit the McDonalds there for breakfast once and it was really seedy compared to when I stayed there a few years ago.
