View Full Version : What Type Of Gambler Are You?
Steve

This week's Topic Of The Week is:
What kind of gambler are you? Slow and Steady, Fast and Furious? Do you set a specific time aside for gambling? etc
My husband and I are so totally different it's not even funny.I'm sure there are lots of different types out there!

My style is perverse.
I am a heavy better most often.
I do not gamble that often, but when I do ...
I pl;ay blackjack and ...
I generally play from 12 to 24 hours.
Yes, you read correctly.
When winning I may quit as early as 6 or 8 hours.
When losing I tend to play longer, natch.
24 hrs. is ludicrous; especially when the shift changes 3 times and the first pit crew that I saw returns 24 hrs. later to say "welcome back" and I chuckle.

I set myself about 2 to 3 hours per day to gamble, depending if I am winning or losing. I think that I am a steady gambler. I set aside about 300 dollars a day to gamble. With any winnings I get I save up for the last day before I leave, and either spend the money on having a nice meal, or Shopping for clothes, or seeing a nice show.

I love to play Blackjack. I can sit at a table for hours if I am winning or staying close to even. If I am ahead ($20, $40 ...) and I think the table has turned (lose three hands in a row) I quit. If I lose $40 right away, I know this isn't my table and I quit. I don't want to wait around until the table is in the players favor. Also, I like being at a table where everybody knows 90% of basic strategy. It seems if everybody knows how to play basic strategy overall, the majority of the people at the table will win and I hope that I am one of the winners.

I like Nakedmel's style. It is perfectly logical and manageble.
However, talanhart said that a majority of players with reasonable basic strategy skills win. That is demonstrably incorrect.
On a related issue, the skill level of your table-mates has NO effect whatsoever on your results.
You believe that losing 3 hands in succession is some kind of omen that yopu ought to leave the table. Not only is that wrong, but consider the following:
Losing hands TEND TO contain excessive amounts of small cards, slightly INCREASING your winning chances on the hands that follow; but of greater importance is understanding that at ALL TIMES you are an underdog to win your next hand, even if you are a card counter. ALWAYS. The only reason that winning is even possible is because of the 150% Blackjack payoff, double downs, and (some) split hands.

Careful and confident.
I have a daily budget set aside for losses and wins and will not go over it. My budget depends on how many days/nights I am playing. I actally budget day sessions and evening sessions.
If I had a bad day, there is always tonight and if I'm hot, I play until it just starts to turn and stop. Take my winnings and try again at a later session.
I learned this the hard way, years ago but it works for me.
I love to play video poker, drink, smoke and have fun.

cautious and cheap.
I take a pre-planned stake, and when it's gone, it's gone. I go expecting to lose it and simply treat it as play, usually I break even and often I win.
I never go to ATM's for more gambling money, ever.

We normally have a gameplan of what shows we want to see and when. And what nights we are going to make reservations for supper. So I work around those items when planning gambling time. We always make all the tour through the main strip locations and gamble a little in each as we sight-see. But, normally we try to end our night at the hotel we are staying and gamble most money there. So we gamble slow and steady during the day and at night I turn it up and risk a little more. And we schedule an afternoon for O'sheas and blackjack. Always had luck there.
My wife enjoys gambling but not for hours at a time. If she doesn't win within the first 30 minutes (on slots) she is ready to go do something else. I on the other hand am just getting started in 30 minutes. We play roulette together which is fun when we can enjoy each others wins. The wife is a trooper and knows how much I enjoy hanging out in the casino and playing blackjack so she does some shopping and watches me play to pass time. But our gambling habits are not the same. My normal gaming time per day is 6-8 hours while hers is 2-3.

I prefer to play blackjack and/or craps using gambling systems that I purchased and or was taught over the years. Still believe in entering the casino with $2000.00, play untill I am $275.00 ahead, leave a $25.00 tip and walk away from the table not colored up. Cash in and leave with my original $2000.00 in my pocket, + $200.00 profit + $50 in spending money. So far I am up $400 for the year which is one week old. Some days it takes an hour, some days 12 hours.......

I am a bit like G-alan, but in reverse.
Let me explain - I am the long session gambler, and my hubby only gambles for short periods. The main reason is that he does not play table games, just slots and VP.
I restrict myself to 8 hours at the BJ tables - hard to get in that much time if in Vegas with my husband, but if there alone - I must restrict myself or I'd be there longer!
Because I am such a low roller, I CAN sit at my low limit table for the full 8 hours - usually - if losing steadily, I cut the session short.
I keep a BJ fund and play off that - been doing it for several years now (about four visits to Vegas per year), and still up!!!! Slightly up, , but up!

My husband and I are the steady type of players. He would stay forever, but I have learned to handle the stakes and thus get him to be more disciplined. We go very often now that he is retired. He loves 3 and 4 card poker and craps, but they can get expensive quickly if things are not going well. I love craps, too, but play 99% of the time on video poker. He plays it, also, because that is what keeps us afloat over the long run. We take breaks when we lose our session stake and always put back what we win and start over with the stake. Lately, we have been losers, but last year was so good, we are still playing on our original stake for the year.

I would have to say I'm a fast and furious type of gambler also. I will sit and play slots for hours ( at least as long as the money holds out ) and still be ready for more. My wife, on the other hand, tends to get bored with gambling a lot quicker than me, and will wander around ( or bug me to go elsewhere ) after she is done.

I would be the steady type, play at least 10-12 hours most days. Start out with about 3-4 hours of VP every morning before the other half gets moving. I stay on eastern time and sleep very little so am usually started by about 4a.m. Vegas time. So its very esy to play for over 12 hours in a day............

I try to play at least 4 hours a day at my home casino, set a budget for each day and don't exceed it. Play an hour or so at other casinos we visit, I play VP and only play slots when I have brain freeze after a long session and only play "fool around" kind of slots that have cute bonus rounds. I never use an ATM or cash advances. If I've had a really terrible day and lost my budget I go have a drink somewhere and people watch an hour or so.

I am a laid back gambler. I can't wait to gamble, but once I find a table or slot machine, I take my time. Not in any rush to lose my money...;)
I play Let it Ride, Paigow Poker, Roulette, VP and slots. I usually have $300 a day put aside for my gambling (we stay approx. 6 days). I have hit the ATM, but just enough to get me thru that day.
My hubby is an aggressive player. He loves poker, blackjack and craps. He could play for hours and hours and not know if the world is crumbling down around him. He definately does not stick to a budget.

Slow and steady here. I set aside $100-$200 per day. I don't stay with anything too long as I like to wander around and I want enough money to play, if something catches my fancy. If I'm winning, once I've doubled my initial stakes, I pull the money out and just play on the winnings until either I've exhausted it or one of my traveling buddies tells me it's time to leave (which means they're losing and it's time to move on).

We (wife and I) take it easy. We really don't have a set time or budget for gambling. We are there to relax and have a little fun. So I guess we fall into the slow and steady category.

I am at the racebook at least one hour before the first race at the first track. I usually don't leave for 4-5 hours unless I don't cash a ticket in my first ten bets, which has happened more than once. I bet with the idea that if I hit one bet out of five, I am at least even as I only bet $10-$20 a race.
I will then either hit the slots and play Pai Gow. I could be at a Pai Gow table anywhere from 2-5 hours and I usually bet $15 a hand. I admit to being hooked on the penny slots but I have played up to a $10.00 slot at Wynn just one time.
I only stop gambling to go to the restroom, eat or go to a show. I would guess that per day I am in the gambling mode at least 10-12 hours. I have only went to an ATM two times and I do know when to say when. I don't have to pay for too much in Las Vegas and I go there with my "yard sale" money from my business. I have had a few trips where I have lost more than $700 but most of the time I stay under a $500 loss and I have even had quite a few staying even and ending up ahead trips.

This is my plan (A) for a gambling trip to Vegas. First I take with me all the money I possibly can loose that month and still pay the bills. Then I divide it up into the amount of days I'm staying, which is usually 6. Every day I drop my husband off at the poker room or blackjack tables, I go play the slots, VP, roulette, and blackjack, sometimes tournaments. make an arraignment to take a break and meet in about 3 to 4 hours. Then eat or get a drink and people watch, or go to a show. Then start over again, and again and again, until we are either too tired or too broke. Yes, I have cheated and dipped into the next day's money many of times, that's plan (B) and have hit the ATM on the last day more than once, plan (C), but I never have not had fun though, and have actually come home way ahead several times, enough to keep us coming back. We love Las Vegas :D

I set my gambling amount $3oo.oo per day. If I,m winning I might go to a higher slot I usually start a 25 cent machines but lately seem to hit a lot better on the penny slots.I thought I would never play penny slots but seemto have a lot better time any losing on them. GO EAGLES:D

I try (emphasis on "try") to remember that those little round clay tokens symbolize what I work for a lion's share of the week. On that note, I try to make sure that if I am going to gamble, I have criteria of where I am going to do it:
-Most of all, it has to be FUN (why else do it?)
-The place I go to, can not take me for granted as a customer (ok, that usually leaves out MOST of the Strip; believe it or not, a pit boss at the Monte Carlo once said to me, "don't bother showing me your card, if your base bets are less than $25." Most places on the Strip have that policy, but at least they have the class not to say it out loud. Guess where I won't even buy a soda anymore?). At least give me the illusion that you care, and I'm yours.
-The table: Once at the Mirage, now one of my favorite places, I had the pleasure of playing 21 at a table that had 5 great people playing, with 2 or 3 coming and going. Also the 2 dealers that were trading off shifts, were very friendly, funny, helpful, and made everyone feel comfortable. after about 8 hours (I kid you not), I think I was up around $15, and the dealers were pretty much getting all of my winnings (take care of the dealers, and you get all the good karma you need, I always say). The same 5 other people were there, no one was winning big, but everyone was talking like they knew each other for years. Newbies to the table were also welcome and thought the table was a gas by the time they left. A couple of hours later, I did actually go on a tear, made some bucks, made some bucks for the dealers, made some new friends, and had the time of my life. You get on a table like that, it's a lifetime experience.
For Craps, get on a hot table, and I don't have to tell you what an experience that is. If the rest of the casino can hear your table, you have one. Also, is it me, or when a person who has no idea what they are doing, has $5 on the pass line, and holds the dice for an hour, always ends up on a table like that, and is happy to win his $5!!!!
-The rules are very important. Some places are playing wicked games with their rules. Remember that when the rules stink, your money isn't going to last as long.
-Use the safe or safe deposit box in your hotel. Just go through a certain amount at a time. You should NEVER regret going on vacation, let alone feel bad about what you lost gambling. If you think you are losing too much, too fast, then go over to the sports book and bet on a sporting event, sit there and watch it. Bet $20 on a basketball game, bet a 2-team parlay on a team and the over/under, and what you have there is a 2-hour horse race with a $72 payoff. Not too bad, and not for a lot of money.
-Last of all, if you're sitting somewhere playing long enough, after you have taken good care of the dealers, who are no doubt talking you up with the pit boss, ASK FOR SOMETHING like a meal or something (tell them you'd like to make it up to your spouse for being away so long, and you'd like to take them to dinner or the buffet). If you're doing OK, how can they say no?
I also play the new Penny slots (where you end up playing $2-3 a spin), and I'm a pretty good video poker player. Lately I have been getting some decent hits, and have had the sense to see when a machine is going cold on me. I also like making long-range bets in the Sports Books, and put the tickets on my fridge to give me hope for my next trip. Had Florida last night at 12-1 (bet it last MAY), Texas last year, and the Pats at HUGE numbers on their past Super Bowl wins (at 60-1 & 70-1). Love doing that. (pick an NHL team this year, since the league seems to be wide open, if you want to try it) The hotels I play at take GREAT care of me, with FREE rooms, among other things. THAT is what makes Vegas a special place to go. I would move there, but where would I go on vacation???
If it isn't fun, or if you feel cheated, why do it?
GO PATS!!!

Slow and Steady
starts about 5AM vegas time ends about 10 PM.
First black Jack, I have a set amount to lose for that session. When the session money is gone it's right to a jack or better Video Poker Machine. When the VP session money is gone it's right back to black jack.
If winning I will leave the black jack table when I feel things turn, take the profit and run right to the VP. When winning at VP I will stop when the screen gets blurrryyyy. Then back to the black jack table.
The only breaks are for food, an afternoon change of cloths along with an shower to clear the head, a show, or a quick walk out side for a breath of fresh air and see if it's day or night which helps clear the head.
If a visit includes taking my wife. It's in warm weather only. You better believe I spend 30 minutes pool side lounging with her before having lunch from the pool snack shop and 30 minutes after lunch lounging with her pool side.
This will go on from Arriving Monday morning leaving about noon Friday. All this will work out to about 40 hours all total of gambling.
I go to Vegas to gamble...
--------------------------------------------------
My kids in their twenties sleep all morning, hit the pool all afternoon and party in dance clubs all night. Maybe two kids will risk a total of $100.00 gambling for a 3-4 night stay. One kid won't even put a $20.00 bill in a machine.
The times are a changing...

most of the time it's the way i gamble. i try not to go on tilt. l begin by dividing my stake by the days i will be in vegas, then i divide each day in to sessions. when that sessions money is gone. it's time to do something else until the next session,go to the pool, see a show or sight see. if winning i still leave when that session is finished. having so many things to see and do is abig plus in L.V. you don't feel as if their is nothing to do but gamble like other casino towns.i always set money a side for the sports book when i come to L.V. since this form of wagering is legally found no where else i always spend part of my day here.

I don't have time in Vegas to gamble. So much to see and do. My money goes for shows. I have thrown a few quarters in while waiting around for my friends, but that's it. I've won a little doing that years ago anyway. My friends are addicted to slots. Others run the $trip with me. Everyone's happy.
I go there because I like to forget my business. Its therapy. So I want to do as little thinking as possible .So, nowadays I play the slots and V.P. First chance I get I see which lots are paying, and I write down their name a, location and number. .....I bring about 24 self addressed envelopes, and when I hit a win I put it in an envelope and mail it home. I never give any winning back. Most machines have a RNG and I try to find its pace or tempo, then I guage my play to fast or slow because the RNG changes so many times a second. Its not real science but I am getting free Room, and food etc.Its great therapy to be a winner.

I usually go for a 5 day trip. The first 2-3 days are low limit blackjack, just playing for the fun of it and trying to make some spending money (enough to cover food and other incidentals for the days). Usually by day 3-4 I am up to a $25 minimum bet trying to make a little take home cash if the first few days went well, or trying to make up the losses from the first couple days. Then, on the last day I will usually go to a $100 minimum blackjack table and either make a killing or take a beating. I don't mind coming home broke as the money I go to Vegas with I expect to spend.
My bankroll is high enough that I never have to worry about money until I hit the final day. That's when I make it or break it. Sometimes I come home with a few thousand, and sometimes I have a couple quarters, but either way I am happy 'cause I had been to my favorite place in the world!
I guess conservative. I have a set limit for the day. However when I shoot craps I bet just the 6 and the 8 until I make a few dollars. It takes a while but you can make some money doing that.

I like to break my days up into sessions - usually morning, afternoon, and evening. I love getting up early (usually around 6:00AM), grabbing some coffee, and playing VP for a few hours. Then it's usually time for breakfast, followed by a late morning/early afternoon jaunt. Then it's back to gambling during the afternoon until it's time for a nap (I usually do table games during the afternoons when people are friendly and not too drunk!). Usually nap until dinnertime and then have an evening activity. After the evening activity, I usually gamble for a few hours before calling it a night (usually back to VP). I usually try to get to bed by midnight so as to allow myself 5 or 6 hours of sleep. Then I do it all over again the next day!

We do the set budget divided by number of days way of figuring what to gamble each day, usually around $200 each per day. We have a tendancy to stroll until something catches our eye, stay if our mojo is working, move on if it's not. The one thing we swear by though is this....( now everyone will think I'm NUTS, but here goes!) Hubby and I don't both gamble at the same time....when we do, we both lose. We're both slot players. I prefer .25 or.50 he prefers $1. While he's on, I sit to his left, while I'm on he stands just over my right shoulder. When things start to go sour for one, we walk until something catches the others eye. Granted, he has more luck than I do, so he spends more time playing than I do. But with the exception of one trip a few years back, we always come back with at least part of our gambling budget as we "rat hole" any sizable winnings each day. Most trips we break about even. Occasionally we bring home a fair chunk of change
Sounds crazy, but it works well for us:rolleyes:

Glad to see I'm not the only one that sets a limit at about $200-300 a day.
I used to be embarrassed to tell...thinking I was at the bottom of the totem pole for a gambling allowance.
Anyway, I like to play at night when there's lots of activity in the casino.
It also makes the money last longer when there's more people betting aound the roulette table. I play either roulette or slots. It takes no thinking on my part. I'll play for about 2 hours then walk around and watch other people play then go back and play more. I did spend 12 hours at 1 roulette table at the Bellagio the first time I ever played roulette. I wished I had known about a players card at that time. Last year was the first time I'd ever used one.
I've learned alot from the folks on this board about dos and don'ts. For example: on slots, play the machines with the largest payback (25X) and such. Someone also recommended taking a $100 and playing a $5 Wheel of Fortune. Bingo! Nervous dropping $5 coins but winning made me feel better.
Going for 5 days in March/April. I'm going to try something new. Each morning I think I'm gonna drop a $10 on either Red or Black on the roulette table. If I win, I get the buffet. If I lose, I eat peanut butter and crackers.

I only play blackjack and the slots. When I start doing bad at one I switch for a while. Blackjack I usually play the minimum so I can play longer and slots you have to play the max to win anything. I try to limit my gambling to $200.00 a day. I've been known to stay at a table through many shift changes. I play all night and sleep all day or watch all the TV programs I miss while at work.

I play what i call "jungle gambling." If the machine/table is cold, I leave immediately. If the machine/table is hot, play it until it turns, then leave. The hard one is when you win a little, then lose a little, then go back and forth. In that situation, I hang around because I figure I'm gaining comp points. But when it turns, I leave.
But I mainly leave when my girlfriend starts whining, saying something like "I could have bought a _____ with the money you just lost in the last 15 minutes." It's a true statement, but definitely would not have been as much fun.

I tend to be a very conservative when winning. When I first get to Vegas anyways. I'll play 25 dollar hands, one or two hands a piece, and If I get up a 150$-200 at a table, I have a tendency to leave once I lose the first or second hand after that. I pocket the winnings and keep track of how much I am ahead. Towards the end of my trip I will start playing with my winnings at a higher denomination table aprox 1-200 a hand. When I am conservative, I seem to have more winning sesssions than losing ones. When it gets towards the end of my trip it seems to be quite the opposite. I probably dont use the bank roll needed to play that amount of money, but I just want to go on an amazing run, and clean some house. Maybe one day ... I must say if i play "big" hands its always with the houses money. You run of of chips(ammo), you cant be in for the battle.

Well I don't gamble!
I play for fun!
3 - 4 - 5 hours a day!
My loss limit changes depending how much fun I'm having!
But I know, like everyone here, Vegas is built on losers - and losers who claim they never lose!
So shows food good table friends - & $25 & up tables make it a fun trip!
Some 5 cent slots with my wife to relax!
Thats a vacation!

You're not crazy = we couples always seem to cancel each other out when playing, don't we?
...and your husband isn't luckier - he plays higher denominations and gets rewarded for the higher risk; generally in a casino, the higher the slot denomination the better the payback percentage - and his jackpots are bigger because his denominations are bigger... :p
The one playing at time strategy also helps with money management, since you actually both play less than if you played at the same time....less time to lose......the rat holing is good money management too....
you're not crazy at all.....but then, I must admit that we use similar methods - right down to my hubby playing higher denoms than me, too
if you are crazy, I'd call it "crazy like a fox"

I am a compulisive gambler while my husband is much more reserved. I would keep going all day while my husband knows his limits. In fact, I try not to too much money on me or I will spend it all if I am not winning. After all that next hand or that next spin is going to be a winner right??????

I play mostly pocker, I at a level where I am comfortable but not so low that I do not respect the bet. I play until either my vision blurs (about 12 hrs or I make 2 mistakes in a 1 hour period. In blackjack I am a winning edge progressive better but the game bores me so no more than 1hr sessions. Slots are a rip off so I almost ever play them, but once a trip I will cycle $1000.00 thru a $5.00 Wheel of Fortune machine and will leave up atleast 5k or broke (guess what is more common). Roulette is my guilty pleasure bad house edge but I love the game, no more than 15 minutes at a time. Pia Gow Poker is my #2 game and I play it big for up to 6hrs at a time but only where they let the players bank every other hand. No craps or anything else for me except a couple of dollars in VP machines. Typical 3 day bankroll is now up to 10K have yet to loose it all. Most of mt session wins come from Poker and Pia Gow

I had submitted this question because my husband and I are so very different players. Two things we have in common,1- we both like to gamble 2- we both love the slots, but thats where it ends. My husband is fast & furious(when the slots still took coins,he couldn't get the money in fast enough) and he will play anything(pennies- $5) Me,I am slow and steady,I have to LIKE the machine(will look for just the right one) only on pennies or nickles will I hit the max button, all other denom(25-1.) I count off the credits 1 by 1. I have a plan when we go(but you know what they say about the best laid plans) We have hit the debit cards and the credit cards(usually not too badly) but I feel that if I come home with a little of my money it was a winning trip(and, as someone else posted, you had to have had fun!) We just got home at 2am today(5 days) and this trip was no different than our others,he plays his way and I play mine.I think our differences makes us interesting, also, we can't play beside one another for very long(drives each other crazy)

When we go to Vegas it is usually for 8 or 9 days so we have to manage our money. My very first trip to Vegas I was sure I could beat the blackjack dealer and with the help of God knows how many Coors I went through most of my meager bankroll. I learned then that Vega on short money is tough.

I guess I am a "pit stop" gambler in that I play slots along the way to meet Steve at the race book. By the time I reach the race book I may have hit as little as 2 or as many as 8 slots machines. I will bet the horses for a while but as soon as I lose about $30 (I only bet $5 a race) I will go off to play some more slots and win my horse money back (this happens 60% of the time!). Then I'll head back to the horses for a while before going back to the slots. If I'm not having luck either way, I'll play some Pai Gow. I'm a faster player than Steve with little patience for slow players. Even when we are playing slots together I get impatient if he's too slow hitting that button!

The Mister (alias Mr. Cheap) has a very small budget for each day and when he loses it all, he's finished for the day, or so he says. You can't prove it by me. I have no idea how much he brings but can almost book that it's not a quarter of the amount I have with me. He plays Blackjack and Let It Ride and will try a few dollars in slots. He's not really a gambler. His hopes of winning hardly ever come to fruition, but he just loves the atmosphere.
I'm more of a games player than a gambler. I allow $200-$300 a day but bring more than that - just in case, but I never spend it. I like the idea of bring home money, even if it's only mine. I love Let It Ride and usually buy in for $50 at a $5 table. If I'm not getting the cards, I'll play it down to $10 and walk. If my husband is playing beside me, I'll slip him the $10 before I leave. I also love all the goofy slot machines and play mostly pennies and dollars. The penny ones because they're more fun and the dollars because I'm hoping to hit a decent win once in a while. I also like roulette, but know the odds suck, so if I can find one with 25 cent chips (usually someplace like Circus Circus) I'll buy in for $20. Once I double my buy-in, I'll walk. Otherwise I'll play it all down. I don't go crazy on my bets, so my $20 lasts quite a while. I bet 3 numbers straight up and 0-00, so I'm actually only betting $1 per spin. I also like Craps but have trouble figuring out the odds and will only play if I find a $2 or $3 table and can stand next to the stick man.
We're booked for April, with 2 free nights at Harrah's and getting anxious.

If I was to categorize myself, I would be slow and steady. I play $.25 and $.50 video poker machines. I enjoy dropping coins into machines so I first try to play at the casinos where they still have the older machines. If there are only ticket machines, I hit the single coin in button until I reach the maximum then either the machine automatically deals or I have to hit the deal button.

A cheap one.....since I live in vegas anything more would be fatal to my bank account. However once I do play You can tell I live in Vegas. While back in colorado We went up to cripple creek to play some .25 poker machines ( which is all I play since slot odds suck) and while playing up there you can tell by the speed at which the players hit buttons that they are tourist gamblers...... My wife gets dizzy watching Me play as I hit the buttons so fast that she can't even see what hand I had before it is gone.........

I tend to be a careful, I like to start slow maybe $50 start and depending on whether I my winning or losing. I'll play for maybe 3 hours at at time. I'll play more and bet more if I'm on a roll. Though I may not be a huge winner, I am pretty good about coming out ahead.
