I have a problem wth the odds on craps. I've played craps and enjoyed it it, but always feel to embarassed to ask again what I need to put down for certain numbers. I should play on the computer until I have it down but I just never get around to it.:o As far as being afraid to try something those rides that jut out over the edge of the Stratosphere (not the roller coaster) are definitely not for me!

Strip Clubs. Have friends and acquaintances who have been to them, and have been encouraged to go, but I don't think it's for me. I see them while traveling around town, but have yet to make a visit.

I love playing poker but have always been afraid to play in Vegas. I guess I'm just to cheap. I tried a Texas Hold Em tourney at Tuscany, total cost $50.00 and enjoyed it but I don't think I'd enjoy a $2- $4 game of regular poker . :)

Lets see.......I guess it would be going offstrip to hotels/casinos. I would like to see them but still have not..........at least not YET.......;)
I would also like to FORCE myself back up to the top of the Eiffel Tower. I am afraid of height & I think I was too scared the first time SO I would like to force myself up there one more time........

You definitely should tray out PaiGow Poker (the cards, not the dominos). It has a reasonably low edge, and is VERY low variance (you push on average 47% of the time), so it's hard to lose a lot of money very fast. The other thing that is nice is that if you don't know how to set up your hand (split your 7 cards into the 2-card hand and 5-card hand), the dealer will always tell you the 'house way' to do it, which is 99.8% of the time correct for the player.
Baccarat is really low edge, but completely no-skill. All those people that write down the history of the hands on those long white cards are fooling themselves. There is no system possible. Just don't bet tie. Banker and Player bets give you almost exactly the same chances.

I think I'll have to add the Strat rides, and any other thrill ride or coaster to my modest list.

tryon4,
Most casinos offer a $1-$2 no-limit holdem cash game. You should try that. At least until you get comfortable, you don't have to get into any pots unless you want to. And with blinds that low, you're only obligated to invest only $3 for every 10 hands you play. But don't worry, you'll feel comfortable soon enough. :)

Brothels. Sound like fun, but in reality they appear to be quite scary.
I walked in one once out of curiosity, bought a souvenier chip, and left. It was quite scary.

I was really afraid to play Blackjack until the last trip I made to Las Vegas. I am proud to say that I made 85% of the right moves according to Blackjack strategy. I did take a few risks with the other 15%.
I was at a $10.00 table and the largest bet I made was $40 after Doubling Down. I started with $80 and walked away with $230. My son, the expert lost all his $$$ that he started with. Guess I cam still teach him a few things?

cocaine. In the movies guys are always doing coke in Vegas, so I thought if I were to ever try it I would try it in Vegas. I really only thought about this before my first trip to Vegas in 2000. I have no desire to even bother with it now, but that is the only thing I can think of that I was afraid to try.

I would never do the rides on the Strat there isnt enough beer in the world to get me on one although the observation deck was totally awesome.

HI
I would buy a book about craps, that will tell you how the odds work, A good way to play is waite tell a point has been made, like 4-5-6-8-9-or 10, at that time place your bet on that number, lets say the point is 6, lay a five dollar chip and a one dollar chip on the table and tell the dealer six dollar six, if the shooter rolls 6 before he rolls 7 you win 7 dollars, if you put that same 6dollars on the pass line you only win 6 dollars, you can bet a 5 dollar pass line bet and a 5 dollar odds bet, and you would win 5 dollars for the pass line bet and 6 dollars for the 5 dollar odds bet, always remember that the pass line always pays even money, no odds, so if you bet 5 dollars you win 5 dollars, if you bet 10 dollars you win 10 dollars, lets say the 10 is the point if you bet 5 dollars on the pass line and the shooter rolls a ten you win five dollars, if you take that same 5 dollars and tell the dealer to put that same 5 dollars on the ten and he rolls a 10 you win 9 dollars, a lot of books will tell you the pass line with a odds bet is a good way to play, but remember 5 dollars on the pass line and 5 dollars odds pays you 5 dollars for the pass line bet and ten dollars for the odds bet, for a total of 15 dollar win, a beter way to bet is to take the 10 dollars and place on the 10 if 10 is the point, this way you win 18dollars. the best book to buy is the dice doctor which can be purchused at the book club in las vegas. good luck, reply if you want

Don't be afraid of sitting down at a table and pulling out your BJ basic stratagey card. And never be afraid to ask for help from the Dealer. Remember the Dealers only make money when we win, because we don't tip when we lose. Oh! and always tip during play not when you are leaving the table the Dealer can't help you when you are gone.
Maybe the casinos should set up a novice table for all of us who are nervous about playing with more experienced players, I know they do the lessons but those are always during the day, on weekdays. I can only get to Vegas on weekends.

I had a fascination with that show before it ever opened. I followed new developments on their web page, as the opening drew nearer, and then....
the critics and celebrities who were at the premier, absolutely bashed it. When I read about the content of the show in more detail, I decided it might not be for me. But, I have been on a mission to see all of the Cirque shows as they come to town, so someday, I may even have the courage to see Zumanity. Hey, it must have some kind of draw. It's been here for over 3 years!
Just an FYI, the Strat coaster is now gone! So, if you wanted to and never did, you missed out. They have newer, scarier rides now. One got stuck and hung two girls over the edge for several hours one cold night. But, that's still not as scary as a wheel falling off of a roller coaster at 1,000+ feet. That did happen once. The coaster went very slow, but the heigth factor told me not to do it. I won't try any of the Strat rides, or the coasters here. Yes, I'm a whimp with a weak stomach!

First of all let me say judyqu and BOBNDEE, you can play Blackjack with me anytime. I have no problem whatsoever with novice players. It took me an eternity to understand that stuff myself. And I still aggravate people by not always following the "rules". I've shown a dealer or two a thing or two by not always following the rules too, like not always standing on 17. It's fine to follow the rules as long as the cards do. That said, my fear is Bungee jumping, I almost did it 7 years ago for my fortieth birthday, but by the time I found where the place was, it was closed due to high winds. I haven't summoned up the courage to try again since.

I have a suggestion. Watch a table - watch a lot of tables if necessary and then bet behind. Are you allowed to do that in Vegas? Pick someone who seems to know what they are doing and go on the ride with them. :)

No one should be afraid to play Blackjack. Only a few jerks get mad about other people's play. Most of us realize that what other players do doesn't effect you in the long run and that everyone is free to play however they want.
My advice if you are new is just don't sit in 3rd base (the seat directly to the dealer's right). That seat takes a lot of heat from the jerks if they make any plays that aren't considered Basic Strategy.
I find it very rare that the jerks say anything directly to the players, they usually make snide remarks to the players next to them, but do it quietly.

never be afraid to ask other players what you should do if you don't want to make a mistake. If the play is a borderline play, like hitting a 13 against a 2 showing, ask the player with the most money bet at the time. Other wise, go to the gift shop, buy a stategy card, and follow it. Or just ask the dealer, they all know proper play.

The last time I was in LV (unfortunately ) was a couple of years ago. I wanted to see Wayne Newton and happened to be at the right place at the right time. They always keep some seats that open up late at night around 11pm, for hotel guests for the next night. They had to many to leave open and I happened to be there got a discount, and front row seats. You might want to try this. I doubt that Celine has the same policy, but if the show is affiliated with a hotel you might be able to get some discount and good seats using this method. :)

otherwise it would be 5 dollar VP or Slot.... just too cheap and never won enough to allow be to be that brave!.........
Last trip, I promised myself that if I got $50.00 ahead while playing $1 VP, I'd move up to the $5 machines, which I did. I played $5 at a time, ( wrong, I know, but I wanted to stretch it out ) and when I got ahead on THAT machine, I pushed "max" and four kings came up ! I believe it was $ 625. I put maybe $100 of that back in, again, one token at a time, and when I didn't come up ahead , I went back to the cheaper machines. My craps playing husband just happened to be with me when it happened...as you can tell, it was a win I will always remember. Well worth it.
As for craps, I was afraid, also, for years, until the hubby talked me into it. I played the minimum, starting only with ONE bet...once I "got" it, I would make TWO bets....etc. You don't have to make a bunch of bets, like some people do...you can go slowly and still have SO MUCH FUN. Try taking lessons at your hotel, you will learn a lot,it will be fun, and you may even play later in the night "for real" with the dealer that taught you.
I want to play pai gow ( sp?). I WILL play, next time.
I have often thought about being gutsy and placing a $100 bill on red on roulette or on one hand of blackjack. To date I have been too afraid. My luck I would play blackjack and then get a hand where I would have to double down or split and then I'm screwed. My anxiety would send me into a panic. Beth

Let's be honest, some things in Las Vegas are intimidating. Some for different reasons but still... so here's the top 10 Things I, The Gumbo Man, have been Afraid to Try in Las Vegas:
10. Baccarat. I just don't get it. Put my money here: lose. put my money there. lose. put my money there again, WIN. Why? Don't freakin' know, take the money and RUN!
9. Getting a haircut at that place where the barbers are all hot women and they all wear sexy lingerie and nightgowns.
8. A real tattoo. I have yet to see any picture I want to look at every single day for the rest of my life. I think thats why lots of folks get them on their backs. If I did get a tattoo. thats where I'd put it. It would be a lot of little doodles and cartoons and a tic-tac-toe game, and it would say "Please don't tell this guy all the (stuff) we put on his back... he thinks its a picture of a boat!!!"
7. Any of those shows where men dress up like women and sing and dance. Not that there's anything wrong with that! It's a phobia.
6. Asking the "chef" what kind of meat that is in the stew, featured at the $3.95 Dinner Buffet
5. Asking the pit boss where he got that fabulous suit!!!
4. Asking the hot blonde Paris-Hilton-Wannabe at the Palms Pool Party if she wants to dance. With me. In front of everybody. Just. Once.
3. Any of those phone numbers on the little cards with the smut pictures the poor people try to hand me while I'm walking down the strip.;)
2. Getting on an airplane to go there or come home! Thats why I drive!
And the Number One Thing I, The Gumbo Man, have been Afraid to Try in Las Vegas:
1. Anything made with fresh spinach or fresh Lettuce
I fold.

I'm afraid to try to go to one of those "hip clubs" all the young beautiful people go to. They are mostly filled with 20-30 yr old thin beautiful people and I would feel out of place and very uncomfortable. I'm 49, short and overweight. :o I definately wouldn't fit in, but I shouldn't care and just go and drink and dance and to hell with what anybody thinks or says, but....I still haven't been to one.
Perhaps someday I'll get the nerve up and go to one of these clubs and act like a 20 yr old even though I sure don't look like one...;)
Another thing I'm afraid of trying is actually playing craps. I watch my hubby and others play, I've even thrown the dice, but haven't played...yet. Someday I'll get the nerve up and try it, but I need to learn more so I don't make a total fool of myself!

Okay, I was afraid of blackjack- I tried it and didn't like it. I was afraid of baccarat- tried it, loved it, but don't have the bank roll for it. I was afraid of craps- tried it, loved it, and will continue playing. I was afraid of the clubs with the 20-something too cute girls who don't eat and carry real Prada bags instead of the Frauda bag I carry- my friends insist on going to a club whenever we go to Vegas- I usually hate every minute of it, but I've done it.
What I'm really afraid of... renting a car and actually driving it in Vegas.

I've seen it in the casinos at Niagara Falls on the Canadian side. I actually won about $75 playing behind someone who obviously knew what he was doing. You're not allowed to tell the person what to do, but they can ask you IF they want. I had never met the guy before that night and never saw him again after. It was really pretty fun as when we won he'd give me a high-five. Since the casino was really crowded there was nowhere to sit and play it worked out.

Dancing behind the scene at the shadow bar. What a great surprise for my husband but then he would be late due to a run at the crpas table or he would be laughing at the girl behind the screen trying to be sexy and then it would be me!!!Or no one clapping,etc...
As far as being afraid to play the tables, I say everyone should try it. If people at a low lilmit table get upset about a 3 or 5 dollar bet then maybe they should not be gambling in the first place. I have gotten to the point that I do not always follow basic stragety and if it pisses someone off then I smile and do it again. It is not that I do not know what I am doing, but after the 7th 16 in row, I am in the mood to try someohting different.
Look for a table where people are laughing and hvaing fun and join that table. Do not worry about ruining someone's fun. If they are taking it too serious it is not fun for them anyway. Gambling is a form of entertainment.

I'm intimidated by the idea of sitting down at a table game - thus have only played slots - but we hope to find some dealers giving lessons on our next trip.
I really felt intimidated before finally sitting down at a Blackjack table on my last trip. It's good to know basic strategy beofre playing to avoid those dirty looks, especially if you play with "know it alls."
A lot of casinos have lessons but it is the actual playing that will make your self-confidence kick into place.
Here is a tip you might find helpful. The tables are least busy in the early morning hours. (6:30am-10am) Find yourself an empty table and sit down.
That way the dealer might even take the time to help and instruct you.
I remember seeing beginners tables a few years back but I don't think they lasted very long.

Some other folks suggest buying a book, and they're right, especially just so you can learn the math behind craps and some of the more risky strategies. But the free-odds are pretty simple.
1) Always bet in units of three (ie. 3 five dollar chips, or 3 one dollar chips)
2) The free odds to put behind your initial 3 unit pass or come (for rightway bettors) corrilates with the point established by your bet and roll.
3) Free odds bets can be placed as such for maximum EASY best odds:
Points of 4 & 10 = 3 unit free odds bet
Points of 5 & 9 = 4 unit free odds bet
Points of 6 & 8 = 5 unit free odds bet
Thats all there is to it for the basics, just memorize that, and play away the night.

Oh you haveeee to try the Bungee it is sooooooooooo fun we have done it about 30 times now and beleive me it is scary and exciting all at once. its also fun just to sit there and watch people ..... there are different ways to jump each time you try it but TRY IT next time you go you wont regret it Hugs :)

My biggest fear is driving on the Las Vegas Strip. I have never rented a car in Las Vegas. I think I could handle the outer areas but driving on that strip scares me. I think if I lived there I would drive to an off-strip hotel that has a free shuttle to the Strip and take that.

Also afraid of Heights, I bailed out on dinner reservations for the Top of the World Restaurant on my 50th b-day last year. Nearly pooped in my britches up in the Eiffle Tower, never got so far as the Top of the World. :(
