Harrahs is the only one on the strip that has African-American headliners, first with Gladys Knight, George Wallace and now Toni Braxton all at the Flamingo. Why don't some of the other hotels on the strip feature more African American headliners?? Hats off to Harrahs!!!

That's a great observation but I think Gladys Knight and Geoge Wallace started when the Flamingo was owned by Caesars Palace?

Also you also have to remember back to the days Of Red Fox, Sammy Davis Jr, Nat King Cole, Lena Horne, Bill Cosby, Richard Pryor, Slappy White (Geez, I am really showing my age with this name?) and many other African Americans that also were headliners long before there was a Harrah's Entertainment.

More recently we have seen Wayne Brady, The Drifters The Platters and The Coaters (Currently Headlining) The Temptations, The Four Tops, and a lot of other African Americans in a headliner role.

And let's don't forget, Clint Holmes father was African-American.

Clint Holmes was one of the 1st African-American males to "headline" a long-running show on the strip. Because of his endeavors, George Wallace, Gladys Knight and now Toni Braxton have or are currently receiving that same opportunity at other HET owned casinos.

I have found that Harrahs is very progressive in providing diversity in their entertainment. I remember seeing Clint's show and he stated himself how proud he was to be appearing in the theater that his mentor, Sammy Davis, Jr., christened for Harrahs years ago. That was a bold move for Harrahs because Las Vegas hotels and casinos were still segregated at the time.

Delisco, the winner of The Entertainer title, from the Wayne Newton hosted TV show of the same name, was picked by Wayne Newton from a roster of hopefuls, is African American (half).

Although he won a contract with the Hilton, they did not know the winner would be Afro-American. They did, however, also book him for the Shimmer Cabaret.

The Sahara Casbar Lounge has also booked him as an act. (May 06) :)

The Sahara also has a long running (and great) show called The Platters, The Drifters, The Coaster - all on stage performers are Afro-American.

While not headliners, I have seen great little combos perform at the Paris LV -Le Cabaret - all and/or partly Afro-American performers.

There is a talented AA man, Daryll Ross, who has performed in at least the last two feature shows in the Clint Holmes Showroom. He has been the male lead in shows at Harrah's, with choreography by Mistingett (sp?) - the shows were/are:
Skintight and Bareback.

No, there are not tons of AA headliners, but there are performers in Vegas, if you are looking.

Hats off to Harrahs for what? Casinos are in the bussiness of making money, not catering to crass politically correctness. They headline whomever they feel will bring in the bucks. That being said, there have been countless headliners of multiple ethnic/cultural heritages....the only color the Vegas execs care about is GREEN!

I worked at the Lake Tahoe Casino back in 1964. We did not care what color you or they were. What mattered for entertainment was who brought in the most potential gamblers. Black or white was considered, as long as they had green.
