This week's "Topic Of The Week" question:

You are the next major casino complex developer in LV. Where would you put your hotel/casino?? would you implode an existing one?? what would be the theme of your project and what would be in it??
Thanks to L.T. for the question.

Do you have an idea for a "Topic Of The WEEK?"
If so, please send it to me at mrvegas98@aol.com

I Would Put It Next To The Orleans. It's So Lonlely Out There By Its Self. It Would Be Called 'the Hoover' And It Would Be A Dam Good Place To Stay! He-he

Is it too early to implode Hooters casino? They were not supposed to raise table limits. If you can get a dozen wings for $5 you should be able to play a hand of blackjack for the same.

I think Trump took my spot, but get rid of that nasty "New Frontier". It's a good location, and right where all the new construction will be on the next block.

I'm not sure what theme I'd go for, but I'd love to have a place with enclosed Lanai's or enclosed balconies. I'd love to be able to stand on the balcony and take in Las Vegas. (Just a Chicago girl dreamin' here.)

The theme could be "boutique"-like or the comfort in your room of a bed and breakfast, but downstairs is the reality of a full bong-bing-bong casino.

What do you think?

We love the old places, as well as the new ones, but the "NEW FRONTIER" has seen it day, actually had seen it years ago! Wish we could save Imperial Palace, lots of great memories there.
As far as new places, how about over by the Hilton, it is kind of lonely over there also. No theme is nesessary just clean and big with great rooms we can all afford!:D

I would open a W Hotel/Casino just south of Mandalay Bay. I've stayed at the Ws in Chicago and New Orleans (waaaaaa) and they are such great hotels - wonderful amenities, the ultimate comfy beds and so classy. Mine would be all sleek red and black lacquer. All employees would be the friendliest and most helpful staff on the Strip. They would be dressed in evening attire (black tuxes and red or black slinky evening dresses). And the casino would be called "W-IN" which I would assure all my patrons did. No one would ever want to go anywhere else! ;)

I think I would do a jungle theme and have drum beat music going inside and I would place it downtown - that's my favorite area, possibly where Lady Luck currently is, and it would have life size statues of elephants, & giraffes, tigers, etc.. , I would have people walking around doing tribe dances etc..

I would implode the Tropicana and build a casino that would be a cross between the Bellagio and Wynn. The staff would be super customer friendly; all machines would be loose; and the dining fine. No children under the age of 18 would be allowed, even as guests of the hotel.:)

I'd re-develop the entire area around the Stratosphere. Shops and a nice hotel and clean up the druggies and hookers in that area.
I like the Tower but everything else would go.

i'd like to see a proper southern themed casino, not just a new orleans theme. it would have a buffet chock full of southern, soul, cajun, and comfort food. i'd like for foreign tourists to have an exposure to all american cooking.

as for location, tear down the frontier. it's the only casino on the strip i've never been in, because neither i nor anyone i'm with has neither a reason nor a desire to go in.

my other idea would be a dollar tree themed casino. it would have a dollar tree in it as well and would specialize in $1 casino tables, $1 food specials, and $1 drinks. the slot machines would have themes of dollar tree products, like 3 liters of shasta cola, toothbrushes made in countries where there are no dentists, and moldy bread.

I have many times fantasized about imploding the Flamingo. Great central location but its time for new and fresh. The name of the hotel would be "Worlds". The theme would be many different coutries in different areas of the hotel, dining, shopping and casino. It would be top of the line. Fantastic silk fabric from India, chandeliers and crystal, sexy dim lighting, pimped out rooms that would set a new standard. Restaurants galore!! Superb customer service.

The time is ripe for slightly off-strip casino development. When Stations redevelops the Wild Wild West property, a nearby casino, on West Tropicana could attract visitors and locals as well. I think the perfect theme for the next casino would be Polynesian. Everything from the decor, to the landscaping, to staff uniforms could easily reflect the beauty and appeal of the South Seas.

Accross the street from Wynn and the site of the present Stardust Hotel/Casino ,,, which they will implode in early 2007

I've actually thought about this before!
You know how everybody yearns for the "old Vegas"?
There are tons of vintage photos available for research.

That's what my hotel would be themed around. Either late 50's or early 60's.
All the furniture would be of that era.
The casino with low ceilings, yet not crowded together.
All the staff would be dressed of that time....including the hairstyles.
The 24 hour diner would serve up on the dishes that you remember from your grandparents house.
A steakhouse would be my choice for the major eatery. NO buffet.
And when you ordered your meal, it's all inclusive...no $8 potato or $12 salad added to your steak choice.
Lounge acts would rule!
Music of all our favorite pioneer celebrities would be heard throughout.

...and as a perk: if the customer chose to dress of that era during his/her stay, at least one night's room and dinner would be comped! How fun!!

Age requirement: 21 and over to even stay at the hotel. or enter.

First the theme of the resort. My brother and I have discussed this before and it would have to have a theme based on the greatest city in the world (next to Vegas) The Windy City Resort (Chicago).
The Sports book would look like (as much as I hate to say it being a Sox fan) Wrigley Field with the Ivy brick walls.
The shopping area would be called the Magnificent Mile (Chicago's Upscale shopping district).
A mafia themed bar called Al Capone's Vault with pictures of the Chicago Outfit and guys at the doors dressed like mobsters.
Steal the Playboy Club from the Palms since that is where Playboys offices are.
Have a midway outside like Navy Pier in Chicago on the lake front.
Chicago's great restaurants like Houston's steak house, Home Run Inn Pizza, The Chop House, Como Inn (even though its closed best Italian food).

The location. I would think out by the Green Valley Ranch in Henderson. Time to start getting the players away from all the 20 something kids on the strip.

I have been dreaming of opening a Chicago-themed hotel/casino for a long time. This would only mildly pay "tribute" to the Capone era of the city. It would mostly be like Chicago is today. There are so many displaced Chicagoans in the Las Vegas area, they would love a place where they could come and get some good food from the Windy City. Old Style would be served. I would move Morton's into the complex. Home Run Inn, Portillos Hot Dogs, the Chicago Chop House, and Gold Coast Dogs would all be represented. As much as this pains me to say (being a huge White Sox fan) I would have the sportsbook designed like Wrigley Field. Borrowing from New York New York, the greatest skyline in the world would be what people would see for the hotel (John Hancock Center, Sears Tower, AON Building, etc.). I would invite Chicago area bands to play from time to time (Styx, Chicago, REO Speedwagon, Cheap Trick, etc.). Radio legend Steve Dahl would have a home for his annual Las Vegas trip broadcasts. I would build this on the empty lot north of Circus Circus, helping to revitalize the north end of the Strip. Can anyone get me a loan? :)

of course, they'll have to install a small size replica of the sears tower that they'll charge an arm and a leg to go up. don't forget that branches of mike ditka's and michael jordan's restaurants are obligatory as well.

i'm also wondering if drug dealers will congregate around the south side of the casino.

I would create and design a futuristic entertainment complex. It would be similar to a movie theater, with many different theaters, and choices. However, my venue would include all of the best small time acts, that have slowly been pushed out of Vegas by Cirque du Soleil, and other large productions. The smaller, cheaper shows have always been my favorite. Even some of the shows within a show, could survive on their own in such a complex. I saw many fine entertainers nestled inside Splash, and Follies Bergere. It would also be home to a rotating line up of magicians, illusionists, and hypnotists. If it were up to me, there would be no ticket price higher than $35, and all theaters would be in the round, on a rotating stage. (A la Valley Forge Music Fair, which is also now gone.)

My entertainment showcase would be located either across from the Sahara, SW or NE corners (Sorry Ivanna), or within the new casino/hotel that will be replacing the Sahara someday.

Another good Vegas theme would be Vegas. have the theme the History of Las Vegas.

Reading the posts...there are some GREAT ideas. I too thought of old Vegas ( going retro) and do everything in black and white. Post photo's movies, music.have the staff be in that era of uniform. have some of the classic eatteries back then.

Then again, I do like the gentlemen who talked about Chicago. I thought that idea was really cool. I only went once to Chicago but I loved it. They'd have to add a good museum as well, like the institute but smaller.

And of course I think an African theme would be novel. Or replicate what it would be like to go to So. Africa. I have never been but I have heard it is beautiful.

I would get rid of the Excalibur. I think it has seen it's day.

My Casino would be located where Bally's is now. The theme would be an underwater theme. Like the aquarium in Gatlenburg, or the one at Mandalay Bay, sharks, sting rays and other creatures of the sea would weave their way through the casino, restaurants, shops and lobby areas.

There would be lush gardens and lagoons with tropical waterfalls. Dolphins in the pools waiting to enjoy the company of the hotel guests. The rooms in the hotel would have the same nautical theme. The elevators would be like mini subs with underwater sound effects and windows resembling portholes to view your trip to other levels.

With all that water, I'd have to install plenty of restrooms within easy reach of all players and guests. :D

BTW: The African theme mentioned earlier was tried several years ago, but unfortunately it was short lived. The Fiesta, in Henderson, was originally called the Reserve and had a great Safari type African theme that was very interesting. Guess they ran out of money and had to sell. The new owners changed the theme even though the casino was only a couple years old.

The talk of a Chicago theme brought back memories of a fun slot machine with a Chicago, gangster type theme. What ever happened to those Slots? They were only around for a year or less and then just vanished overnight along with the "Press Your Luck" Machines.

;) Hmmm..........Let's see, I would make it very laid back............in a western theme.
Lots of cactus, country music playing 24/7, bars that also serve as coffee shops with appetizer type foods 24/7. Instead of tables & chairs, low tables & chairs made of cedar log................with couches.
All being served by cowboys in tight Wrangler Jeans............
All one huge room..............and you don't have to buy something to sit & rest...........

The casino............... of course the same theme! The dealers would take on an IP look..............the dealers looking like country stars! Not a huge room... but one that would make you feel the warmth of the cowboy image.

Room?...........Hmmmmmmm, of course each floor would have a theme from the western lifestyle........lol From...............a log cabin floor to the bull riding floor............
Ok...........Ok...............I admit it................I am a country music lover..:D

Where?
Between the Aladdin and the MGM. Fill up the south end of the strip and work north.
Don't build it up to the sidewalk use a lot of moving walk ways to get you to the doors.
Have your mailers and promotional material ready. Go after the gambler to stay in your hotel.

What theme?
Do you need a theme? ok,, Start with A NO KIDS ALLOWED SIGN.
How about a mountain ski resort. That would be something different in the desert. Make it big. 4000 rooms with room to add on.
"The chalete" A Swiss dwelling with unconcealed structural members and a wide overhang at the front and sides. Put up a lot of neon lights. Build the most relaxing big pool in town at ground level with lots of shade from real trees (desert folege would be ok).

Here is the kicker. Run it the way hotels used to be run. Not every department in the hotel has to make a huge profit.
Offer enough cheap food, activities or free things, (not tacky) along with enouth high end food and activities right in the hotel so people don't want to leave.
I can try the $20.00 breakfast buffett on Monday and on Tuesday I can get a $4.99 breakfast buffet.

Make your profit off the gambling.

I have heard talk of it but if it was me I would get a professional sports team to Vegas and put a stadium somewhere around the Convention Center. (A lot of traffic + Monorail) I would say ML Baseball because of the long season = more home games. But my casino/ hotel would be right beside the stadium and it would have a baseball theme. Great sportsbook, huge restaurants w/ stadium seating and plenty of TV's for the game, and must have a restaurant able to handle many large groups. The back/ or side of hotel could overlook the stadium. Every Hotel room could be named after a particular player and decorated with that person or team in mind. The Sportsbook could be called the Pete Rose Sportsbook and the workout room could be called the Barry Bonds Room. (haha) The nice suites could be tagged w/ Ruth, Aaron, Williams etc. Also, would have to have a great mall to keep the little ladies happy. Sounds a little cheesy but guaranteed to work due to all the sports fans today.

I would build a new hotel/casino next to or behind Mandalay Bay. The theme would be the four seasons, and the name..."The Four Seasons Hotel and Casino". (Only name I can come up with for now)

Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall.

Winter...Ice skating rink and a snow making machine that makes snow for a few minutes on an hourly basis.

Spring...A conservatory type place (much like Bellagio), flowers, birds, ponds, waterfall, and a miniature golf course in the middle of it all.

Summer...Huge pool with long swim up bar and blackjack tables like at Hard Rock. Tennis courts and rock climbing wall next to the pool.

Fall...Beautiful fall foliage all around with a small park to take a stroll in and enjoy the colors and aroma's of Autumn. The hotel's spa would be located here and an indoor "Hot Springs Pool and Jacuzzi" for all guests.

The hotel and casino would be the same. Each floor and room would be decorated with a season, and the casino would be in 4 sections, each section decorated with each season theme!

Corny, maybe, but hey...it's my dream and it's Vegas Baby!;)

AHHHHHH, let's hope the MJR914 never gets their wish of imploding the FLAMINGO. If they were a true lover of Las Vegas they would know that would be a crime. The Flamingo is a major part of the history of Las Vegas and I love it. I would put anther hotel by the Rio to build up that area a little more.

The Trop needs to go. It's dirty and stinks in there. Save the stained glass for some other use.

I vote to keep the Flamingo. I was there a couple months ago and they've kinda cleaned it up a bit. Margaritaville is awesome - that was a great score for that property. They've upped the table limits lately though - even late at night - a bunch of empty $10 tables and no fives. I never understood that at any casino. Everybody walking by looking at the table limits going down the street to play. Was having a bad trip and was down so I had to play $5 craps and 3-card at the Barbary.

Who cares about the theme? Just have nice pools, good games, good music, and a place to get lunch for less than $20 bucks and the people will come. And lose :)

I would build it near the Tropicana and it would definitely have a New England theme. Part would focus on Cape Cod and part would focus on the mountains of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. Maybe have an indoor ski slope and definitely a pool area that looked and felt like the coast of New England complete with a light house.
Food shops would feature real clam chowder and lobster rolls. Fried clam shops would be all over the hotel as would be the famous Boston Baked Beans.
Gambling limits at certain tables would be keeping with the "frugal yankee" and be low and negotiable.
Rooms would have the look of acadamia and be filled with classic books and Red Sox memrobilia.
As you drove into the hotel someone would beep a horn and yell at you just to make you feel welcomed.
There would be a midway that would feature games alligned with the New England sports teams.
Entertainment would be as varied as any place on the strip. From Pops concerts, to the latest musicals, to Country music and jazz festivals.
And there would be a special corner where you could stand on a pedistal and proclaim your political beliefs and argue with those who would care to challenge you. You could be the "Town Crier" for an hour at a time.

Silly, I know. But I love those sappy guys. Maybe a famous films/celebrity casino that is similar to walking through Madam Tussards? It could include famous automobiles from the movies as well. Oh, I forgot, we already have Planet Hollywood coming!

So, you want the “Old Vegas” theme to come back. Well, here goes:

I would implode both the Klondike and the MGM and build a new hotel on the MGM site that would combine the old Westward Ho and the Klondike. It would be called the “HODIKE”. The carpet theme would be fake urine stains and fake vomit. All of the machines would be the old mechanical hand pull ones. The buffet would be color coded, just like in the movie “Vegas Vacation” (Cousin Eddie:"I'll have some of that there yella, and don't go cheap on me now!)

I would hire actors to pose as street bums and roam the casino and they would approach you and give you money instead of hosts giving comps.

I’d have a special roped-off area limited for players who are porn slappers and time share hawkers only. The only game they would be allowed to play is war and they would fight it will real guns! Last man standing gets the prize of a one-way ticket to Iraq.

The gift shop would be a Dollar Store. The spa would consist of a communal bath filled with Epsom salts and iodine

The elevators to the guest rooms wouldn’t go anywhere. Once the elevator is full and the front door opens, then the back door would open-up to the alley lined with park benches. Free newspapers would be provided as blankets.

The sidewalk in front of Caesars Palace smell would be piped in throughout the casino floor.

I could go on and on. Forget the old Vegas. I’ll stay will the continually evolving new one...

The Chicago theme sounds great! Need to have Italian ice from Taylor Street and Polk and Western Hotdog Stand though. Buckingham fountain would be nice and have Taste of Chicago during July with fireworks. I wonder if anyone ever thought of really doing that type of hotel? Pretty good money maker. I also was thinking of a Mexican Theme Hotel. None that I know of, does anyone else know if there was ever one? I need to get to Vegas!!!

Since this was my question idea I should post a reply huh? My sister and I have discussed this one for awhile. We thought of a Scandinavian style. We would have all Swedish modern type of decor ( think Ikea) and heavy use of crystal to simulate the ice and snow. The cocktail server costumes would be like a skimpy one piece bathing suit with fur trim in colors like ice blue and pink. The rest of the casino staff would follow along the same theme. The buffet would actually be called a smörgåsbord. The original buffet after all!! The casino are would have a high ceiling with some simulated mountains and fjords. I'm not sure why we like this one so much because we're not Scandinavian. Maybe it's the idea of the coolness when it's 117 outside.
I read all the post and you all have some great ideas!!!

I don't completely disagree but everytime I go into Slots A Fun, I feel like I have to take a shower. Could you maybe hire a janitorial staff for your new joint? Even if they just came in once a week!

great idea, don't forget the cigarette burns on the gaming tables. luckily there's plenty of places on the fringes of downtown catering to this market.

i like the scandanavian theme, i've thought of this too. perhaps they can remodel treasure island and put a cheesy viking battle in the front. or else just take out the boats, put some herring or salmon in the water and let people fish. then have a place where people can smoke their fish. of course, mamma mia would would have to be the show here.

I think there is to many big hotel/casinos now on the strip. I think my casino would look like the strip did 30 years ago, i would have lots of old neon signs in it and alot of t-shirt shops and gifts shops and bring back the old prices of food where you could get a really good meal for under $5.00. My waitors and waitresses would be called guys and dolls and everybody would be playing keno.:)
Yes a casino should look like a casino with smoke filled air and not look like an amusement ride. Bring back the good old days:rolleyes:

Great idea, James! Lets talk about setting up a tackle/bait shop and pole rental place close to it! And if Max Baer, Jr. ever gets his license to build his Beverly Hillbillies Themed hotel and casino, we could have Granny serve up some sides of pickled owl eggs and fatback, and wash it all down with some of her Rheumatiz Medicine! When the restaurants aren't open to compete of course, I think the casinos should have free appetizers to go with the free liquor. Nothing too fancy or too messy that will get all over the gaming tables, but just a little something. Maybe some food to go with the booze will stop some people from being totally obnoxious drunks at the tables.

First thing I would do is get rid of Bally's. On the site I would build a 1920's jazz style casino. There would be a lot of art deco style with building influences from Frank Lloyd Write and the Green and Green Brothers. Jazz would also play into the theme by have a "secret" speakeasy on the property.

There would be plenty of low bid table games and plenty of minimums for everyone. Cocktail waitress would have a flapper look to them.

The biggest thing for me would be customer service and the idea of "Surprise and delighting" people. Meanings when something happens try to please the customer instead of giving the shaft. I would not promise any think to anyone but then make everyone feel like a "high roller" by over delivering. You book a simple room I'd try to upgrade you at no charge or for a minimal charge.

Food would also be important. I would have at least one place that would be a high-end vegan restaurant for people who are into that, and it would be smoke free. I would also have one place that is surf and turf. Again with focus on the customer experience. A coffieshop like the Mr. Lucky's at Hard Rock.

The pool would have sand and be like a lagoon. Cheap cabanas for rent and a bar that you could swim up to.

That is the type of casino that I would want if I could have my way.

Is it too early to implode Hooters casino? They were not supposed to raise table limits. If you can get a dozen wings for $5 you should be able to play a hand of blackjack for the same.

Hooters renovations have come along nice in my opinion and when we were there, there were $5 tables.

This sounds great, Cindy! While there is a Four Seasons Hotel located on top of Mandalay Bay, their grounds aren't as neat as your ideas! No rock climbing wall and no ice skating in winter. The current Four Seasons spa and rooms are great, though.

I'd like to see something around the area of the Harley Davidson Cafe/Polo Towers area. Could make it a Biker theme :)

I just started a book about serial murders in Las Vegas. The fictional hotel is called the Transylvania!! Ghosts, and goblins. Yikes, there is a theme I had not thought of!
