This "Topic Of The Week" comes from Lori:
I think we've all been to Vegas enough times that there was always something we wanted to do and put it off because we thought we go so often that we would do it eventually however, with the ever changing landscape of the strip and, now, downtown, the question becomes: What one thing have you always wanted to do in Vegas and now it's too late?

I guess if I had to pick something I wished we had done it would be to have gone to more shows that featured the stars that made Vegas famous. We saw Sinatra in 82 and Rickles in 92 but somehow decided against others like Jerry Lewis or Dean Martin or that era. At one point or another there was the opportunity to see them and we decided on something else. They are what made Vegas, Vegas and soon they will all be memories.

Every trip to Vegas, and there were many, we also said before we left, this will be the trip to see the S&R show- neer seem to get around to it and well...you know what my chances of seeing are now.

Well, It's not officially too late yet, but I fear that by the time I make it back to Vegas in August, it will be: I always wanted to stay at the Tropicana. I have a soft spot in my heart for the Vegas of old, and I've always loved this hotel. I always wanted to stay during the summer so I could play swim up BJ! They aren't taking reservations past April and the buzz is leaning more and more toward's them closing...:(

I always wanted to see Siegfried and Roy and now it's too late. The last time we were at Mirage and they were still performing, we won about 800.00 and my dh asked if I wanted him to go see if we could get into the show that night because he knew how much I wanted to see it but I decided against it and figured we would catch it next time.
The attack happened the day before we left for our next trip after that and we had plans to see the show. :(

I'd have to agree with the Siegfied and Roy line. kept putting it off and then they were gone. Also wanted to see the show at MGM(forget it's name). I think it was called FX or something like that.

I would have loved to have seen the Rat Pack. I always wanted to see Sammy Davis.
Everytime I go, it's as if there's never anyone that I've heard of at the casinos. Maybe I'm just not meant to see shows. I did however see S&R twice.
On my next trip, in October (I hope), I plan on seeing Danny Gans.

Never got to the Dessert Inn either and wish I had. Also, never had a "ho dog", we kept saying next trip. Siegfried and Roy is another example of shows we put off and now can't see.

Aside from getting just one more of those huge Westward Ho dogs and strawberry shortcakes, I would have liked to have seen Siegfried & Roy ( I guess I'm not the only one!)
We saw WE WILL ROCK YOU last year, but I wanted to see it again with the changes they had made - Loved the show! I can't believe it didn't last longer.

I have stayed at the Mirage for the last 15 years and never saw the Siegfried and Roy show. How sad for me. Now it is to late.
I did get to see Siegfried and Roy, on my third attempt. Cancelled first due to technical problems, cancelled second time due to Siegried having flu. Third time loved it and went a fourth time on the same trip. I wonder about the white tigers now. Wouldn't be marvellous to have some way of seeng them living at S&R's Ranch. I would like the "acquarium" approach. We could walk through metal encased walkways and the tigers could be moving around. I would prefer to be in the cage, not the tigers. ;)

I wish I would have seen Elvis at the International (now Hilton) many trips I could have. Always thought "someday". We did see most, if not all, of the "big timers", i.e. Frank, Dean, Jerry, Lib, Sammy, Joey, Margaret, S&R, etc. and glad we did. Lots of memories.

I wish we would have seen Elvis, the real Rat Pack and other entertainers of that era - Newhart, Rose Marie, Rickles, Jerry Lewis, Shecky Green, Buddy Hackett, etc. I also wish they'd bring back more of the free lounge shows - they were usually very entertaining and the price was right.

Well, back in '70 I was in the Navy, stationed outside of LA.
So on one times off duty, I drove to Vegas. After a few hours of sleep,
I hit the casinos. Plus I got a little plastered doing it. On my way back to
my motel to get more money (maybe 40 bucks) to gamble with,
a cop stopped me for not driving in a straight up steller approved fashion. Fortunatley, he let me go with a warning, after understanding I was
a serviceman on my weekend.
The point is, I remember seeing the sign that ELVIS was showing.
Back than I didn't have the bucks.
Went back in '84 for the next trip, fourteen years later.
Didn't have a lot of bucks than either. Didn't see any big name entertainment.
Than I started going back in '94 through 2003. That was the "New Ziegfried and Roy Vegas" emerging.
Figuring I'd be back to the "White Tiger" act, cause it will always be there,
RIGHT!
I never did see it.
We know what happened.

Of course I wish I could have seen the Rat Pack but since I was a child when they were famous in Vegas that was not possible. In the last 10 years or their lives both Sinatra and Martin still performed some in Las Vegas and I wish I had made an effort to see them in the 80s and 90s. Other than that, there isn't much I feel I missed that I really could have seen or done. I got to eat at the Venetian (not the strip hotel, the original restaurant) and I was able to go through the Moulin Rouge before it burned. Most of the things I always wanted to do, we got around to doing. We always have a car while in Las Vegas and we stay at least 10 days so we get around. I have never regretted not having seen Siegfield and Roy. I like magic but their show never appealed to me and although I was never a big Elvis fan, I think most everyone would wish they had gotten to see Elvis once and I did, in my home town at one of his last concerts. I actually drove an older couple to see him and when I picked them up I went in for the last 15 minutes of his show. At that time I was very young and interested in other kinds of music and I was not particularly interested in Elvis but now I'm sure glad I got the chance to see him.
I would suggest to younger people to stop and smell the desert roses when you can. Go see the long-term acts like Blue Man Group, get in some last time in hotels that are soon to be destroyed. Places such as Tropicanna, Stardust, Riveria, Sahara...these places will be memories in 5 years. So go to the Congo Room at Sahara and take some time to listen to some good music. Play in the poker room and place a bet at Stardust. Eat at Katie's at Riveria (use their "buy one get one free" coupon for the $9.99 16 oz. T-bone steak dinner and 2 of you eat like a king for $10.00!) Enjoy these institutions while they last and you'll be able to tell your kids and grandchildren about "old Vegas".

I have been going to LV about 4-5 times a year for the last five years and I have never had a Westward Ho $1.99 Jumbo Margarita. I guess I better head to the Boardwalk. Oh wait, that's gone now too. I guess that makes it two things.

In the 70's we were vacationing in Reno, none of us had ever been to Las Vegas. We heard Elvis was appearing in Las Vegas and as ignorant as we were we thought we could just rent a car and drive on down and see Elvis! Of course it didn't happen nor would it. I will always regret not seeing this man in concert. My whole family still listen's to the King's songs and know he had a wonderful Gift from God. These days I make my memories and hopefully will never again have to say "I wish I had...." Kaiden

How could I have been so stupid? :) One of my all time favorites and I've never seen him live. I lived in So. Cal at the time, so it would have been a breeze.
My mother and my aunt did get to see him, and I am now the owner of a black and white polaroid picture of Elvis in the middle with his arms around my mom and aunt. I also have his autograph from the same trip on the back of one of my moms checks. Pretty cool! But cooler would have been to see him myself.

without question that is my biggest regret that i never went out to LV to see him. love the little shop at the HIlton that plays his Aloha special.. and sure hope it is still there when all of the redoing is redone.
that said... i actually did see him in the infamous Gold suit when i was a very young girl ( tho it does still age me ) a memory i will never forget.
of course it saddens me that I never saw S and R as they helped remake the Vegas of today. It still saddens me not to see their faces on the BLVD.

Interesting question ... outside of "Seeing the Rat Pack" (I was far too young) or even the days when each of the 'greats of yesterday' were individually at various venues ... I have no real desire to go backwards in time. Visiting on average 3 times a year (sometimes quarterly) since '92 I'm one who says the new Vegas in the past 8-10 yrs is better. One always hears of what-it-was-like-back-when, but outside of the era of the family-ized Vegas (thankfully on it's way out) I do not long for the days of less than fabulous, bigger than life, sparkling and bright, Disney for adults Vegas. Count me in for the Bellagio, Venetian, Wynn Vegas! I just love it and so does my wife ... and at my level of play I still get the free nights and comps. Love You, Vegas - keep changing!

We are another couple that kept putting off Siegfried and Roy until it was too late. Since then we've tried to see other long running shows and attractions that we've missed that may disappear. These have included Lance Burton, Rita Rudner, Jubilee, Danny Gans, Wayne Newton, and the Star Trek attractions at the LV Hilton, among others. It can't bring back S & R but we feel a little better about knowing we won't miss these.

Just want to let the Forum members know that Bacchanal at Caesar's Palace was the site of the first ever getogether when I was posting on the AOL boards before I started the newsletter. What a great place this was. Dinner was about $100 per person and worth every penny. There was talk about bring the "B" back but I have not heard anything about it in quite a while.
Also did the Magical Empire a few times and it was a lot of fun.
I have seen just about everything in Modern Day Las Vegas but would have loved to see Elvis and Liberace.

I actually have more than one opportunity that passed me by:
I always wanted to stay at the Dunes. I thought their exterior lights were very pretty.
I wanted to sit and listen to jazz at the Bluenote Cafe that was part of the new Aladdin when it opened.
I would have liked to have seen Siefried and Roy. On that subject, perhaps some of the large production shows that were once an integral part of Vegas. The only one I ever saw was the one at the Stardust.
I wish I could have seen downtown before they closed Fremont Street and put up the canopy. I went downtown for the first time approximately 5 years ago.

I'm not a big fan of shows, so I haven't missed much there. With the new baby at home, it may be a couple of years before I get back. So this year, I'm dedicating a day or two to see all the major off-strip casinos - so I hope not to miss any of those.
For now, I guess I'll say that I never got a chance to see how bad the Surf buffet really was....

This may be minor to most, but the first time I went to Las Vegas with my cousin, we rode the Race for Atlantis ride at Caesar's Palace. It was so much fun that when I took my new boyfriend to Vegas for his first time I knew it was something that we had to do. I was so disappointed when we got to where was and there was a car museum in its place! The guys there said the ride was in Europe somewhere. My boyfriend enjoyed the museum, but I know he would have enjoyed the ride more!

Needless to say, I have been back to Vegas 16 times since that December 1999 trip and have loved every one of them. When I go, I look to see who is out there and if I am interested, I go. How about driving down the Strip from the south, and waiting at the traffic light to turn left onto Fremont Street. Someone in my 1967 Pontiac Lemans Converible is filming this all the way. We all wave to Vegas Vic as we go by.
Actually, I would settle with showing my first born, who is now 19, the "Classic Rock and Roll" show under the canopy. God, I miss it.

I wish I could have seen more of the casinos and hotels of the old days. I first went in '91 and there were still some of the "old" places around. The old Aladin, the DI-which was unimpressive by then-The Dunes, which I only saw from the outside for some reason did't go in and by my next trip it was gone and they were buidig the Bellagio.
The Stardust is probably the most "old school" casino left. It's fairly small inside and not too fancy like most of the bigger ones today.Walk thru there if you get the chance before it's gone, too.

I was going to be so embarassed to say that I also planned to go see Siegfried and Roy, but never did....but now I feel better that I've seen several others who share the same sentiment.

I suppose it would be to have seen The Rat Pack and stayed at the Sands. When I first discovered Vegas, the Sands was still standing and I went to visit but never stayed there. I should have probably tried to but they tore it down before I got back.

I feel very privileged to have done so many things in Vegas and really had a hard time to answer this question, since, over the years, we have done it all. From seeing two shows a night in the old days, including Elvis and S&R, to the numerous times we went to Circus Maximus - wow, what memories.
But, if I come up with one thing - I guess it would have to be not staying once at the Dunes and playing a round of golf there.

My family took many trips to Vegas before I first visited, and each time they made sure they saw Liberace. I would have loved seeing his show, along with Elvis.:(
Fortunately, I was able to see Siegfield & Roy when they were at the Frontier (one of the best shows I have ever seen!). As I mentioned in another post, I went early enough to enjoy the dinner shows, and saw many folks like Shirley MacLaine, Dean Martin, Rodney Dangerfield, Joan Rivers (opening for Bobby Vinton! ), Mel Tillis, Tom Jones, Mac Davis and many others.
Managed a luncheon at the Dunes too, and remembered the strip when the Tropicana was the last major hotel toward the airport.
I think I'll miss the older hotels the most.

There was a show at the Rio, called De La Guarda that I really wanted to see on my very first trip. Went in Spring of 2001. The show closed the week before the trip. Bummer.

I guess my regret is not seeing We Will Rock You!! Had plans to go when we went last Dec, but alas, it closed before we got there.

You didn't miss much. Eileen and I were invited to opening night and gala for this show. According to Eileen, the only good thing about the show was Oscar De La Hoya who was in the audience and walked right past her.
One of the few Vegas shows I did not enjoy.

That makes me feel better. The rest of my first trip kicked Ass. Hit my first Royal the first night, and I've been hooked ever since!
Can't wait until April! Staying DT for the first time.

Missed seeing two comics due to cancelled shows. The first cancellation was Jerry Lewis right before he became very ill and cancelled his LV appearances. The second was Rodney Dangerfield who had cancelled because of surgery and must say that I miss him now that he is gone. Luckily we were able to get a refund for both shows.
With all the hoopla on TV about Texas Holdum, now days ,it would have been fun to be in attendence in the old days of Winner Take All with all those colorful characaters !

I wish I would have seen the strip in the old days..before all the mega resorts took over. My first trip was in '88 when I was 30. I missed 9 years of gambling!
Had a chance to stay at the Desert Inn for $79 a night, must have been a year or so before it closed. Will always regret not doing it.:(

Someone mentioned Mac Davis. I think he had one of the best Vegas shows
I ever saw.

Oh no!!! I didn't know it was gone. We are going to be in Vegas for my son's 21st birthday in May and he loved that ride!!! His girlfriend is coming with us and she has never been to Vegas before. I had told her all about Race for Atlantis. She was so looking forward to it.:( The last time we were there, 2001, we didn't go on it and said next time. :(

My wife and I were talking about seeing Sigfried and Roy the following year when the accident happened. We had been going to Vegas at least three times a year but never saw that show. At least we saw Rodney Dangerfield a couple of years before he died.
I wish I would've gone to Vegas before my first time in 1998. I'm too late to see Elvis, the Rat Pack and various others before they passed on.

I've always wanted to see Steve & Eydie, but they're never appearing when we're in town. We could have seen them years ago, but my husband wasn't interested at the time. Now that he IS interested, it seems we can't make it work.
As for all of you who never saw Sigfreid & Roy, frankly I was disappointed and felt the show was highly overpriced. I took my Mom to see them about 5 years ago and they seemed to perform the same tiger trick over and over. A couple of years later we went to the Rick Thomas show and it was a winner - at a fraction of the price, too. Magic, singing & dancing - it had it all.

missed seeing him many, many years ago. showing our age, but he is the one we really made the mistake of not seeing.

WIN...WIN...WIN...WIN...and get comped into the Penthouse Suite!!
How about a Royal Flush on a $1 machine.
If we are restricted to reality - I would have liked to see Cher.

With only one exception, evry trip we took to Las Vegas was a good time and a winning event. Now that I am alone, I would like to take that once in a life time gambling - winning vacation. Then when flying out at night, be able to whisper to my late wife...'look honey, we hit'em so hard they are dimming the lights'.

Am I to understand from a couple of the above lines that the Westward Ho Dogs are no more?.. ..Every time we go to Vegas, (with the exception of our last trip last Sept)we look forward for DAYS to going to have a "big Weenie" as we lovingly refer to them. Not that they were good or anything....just one of those things we do. My heart aches!! ( Could it be from all those dogs of the past?)
Oh yea...So sorry we missed S&R.... a tragic end to a beautiful thing.

Well it seems I've done everything I have wanted to do! Seen S & R dis-like the rat pack - old one eye at a show in my home town was a flat bust!
Traveled all over the area - lucky - no - just easy to please - I guess if its anything maybe stay at Ceasars - once - but it's just to big - like most of the new mega places - jim j

Every trip to Vegas, and there were many, we also said before we left, this will be the trip to see the S&R show- neer seem to get around to it and well...you know what my chances of seeing are now.
I am SOOO glad that I made the effort in 2002 to go and see their show. It was GREAT. My friends thought I paid too much for the tickets, but I would just tell them it WAS worth every penny and would do it again. And, yes I do know we won't get that chance.

Hey nswanzy... Westward Ho! is no longer ... it was closed in November. Hence the reason there are no longer any Westard Ho Dogs.

#1...Not having seen Elvis. I was born just a few years too late to appreciate Elvis' music back then. Now I'm totally taken with Elvis and can only appreciate him through some of the Elvis tribute artists.
#2...Not having seen the early years of Seigfried and Roy. They were the only reason I wanted to go to Vegas for the first time. Booked my airfare and then bought my show tickets. Enjoyed the show okay, but by then their show had become more about being a big production number than about the big cats. Would have liked to see them when it was more about the big cats!

My mother saw S+R a couple of weeks before the end. She had seen them years before and didn't care for them much, but was on a solo trip and didn't feel like going far that last night, so she got a single ticket, which resulted in a really good seat, right by the stage.
And she came back home and told us how Roy walked the tiger right past her and she was careful to sit very still and not make eye contact because animals don't like that, and it wouldn't have taken anything at all for that tiger to jump into the audience. And we, of course, laughed and mocked her for being a scairdy cat.
Then, of course, what happened happened.

I really miss this place - It was on the corner of Sahara and the Strip - I still have a shirt from there that I wear when I am in town once in a while and it always gets comments from the older dealers. The place itself was nothing to write home about, it was just different.

I remember seeing a different "field bet" on a craps table in the LV Hilton - it paid on 6 & 8, paid double on all 5's, hard 6's and hard 8's. I haven't seen a felt like that in years.
I still haven't made the time to get to play "crapsless craps" in the Stratosphere - does anyone know if they still have them?

I wish I had a chance to visit Vegas 25-30 years ago. We only started going in 1999. Wish I saw the old Vegas much as I love the new Vegas and the way it reinvents itself every year.
