My very fiirst trip was a stop over night on our honey moon. Did not see a lot that was in 1967. Remeber Cesars and not finding the strip until that night.
On to the real trip. February of 1981. Three of us women (moms) saved our money to go to Vegas. Left the kids with grandma or husbands and flew from St Louis to Las Vegas. WE flew ozark and landed, not at McCarren but at that time Howard Hughes. We walked down the steps onto the tarmack. Things have changed.
We got a cab and went to our hotel. Circus Circus. Don't remeber much of that first day. The next day we decided to go downtown. We walked to what is now the Stratosphere but was Bob's Vegas World back then. From there we got on a bus. We did all of downtown casinos. REally dumpy back then but we enjoyed it all. Remember catching the bus for the trip back what a mess.
We took the bus as far as Cesars Palace, which was pretty much the end of the strip. I know there were more up farther but they were spread out. We toured Cesars and just totally enjoyed ourselves.
From there we walked back to Circus, crossing back and forth accross Las Vegas Blvd. Very Little Traffic back then. We hit every place along the route. Things were really different back then. Lots of junky stores and small casinos along with the few biggy's.
I remember going to bed about 3 or 4 am. At 6:00 AM the phone rings. It was 8:00 AM at home in St. Louis. I answered the phone and it what Charlottes husband. Could have killed him. Still talk about that. After that i got up and tried to walk. I fell down. My legs gave out from all the walking. We about died laughing.
What is really different about going to Vegas now is that back then. We allowed ourselves $50 a day for gambling and that did the job. I could sit and play video poker for hours. Try that now and its gone in no time.
It was quite a few years before I got out there again but now usually get out there once a year. But sometime in there made it 2 or 3 times a year. I'm sure if there weren't cacinos in St Louis or close in Mississippi I would make it out there more often.
This past year I went in July (Never never again) and in December about a week before Christmas which is a good time. Cheap flights and good deals on rooms. No big crowds either.
Hmm, think I'm ready to go again.
