View Full Version : Going in December... how to impress?

OK, here's the story...

I'm from England, and I often visit Vegas to see Huey Lewis play (they were my favourite band when I was growing up, of course!). Well, over the years I've got to know the band reasonably well, and was in Atlantic City a few weeks back at a couple of shows. The point of this is that I met a girl. Yes, a nice girl. She's from New York, but has never been to Vegas - she would love to go....

So... as I'm in New York in December (seeing Huey play Richard Gere's part in Chicago on Broadway!), we've decided to take a weekend out to go to Las Vegas. I want to make this a really nice trip for her - I've been loads of times, but not in the last couple of years. So basically my question is this: What can I take her to in Vegas that will top the whole 'Chicago'/going out for a meal with Huey etc, thing?

It's gotta be good, but not ultra expensive...

Staying at IP I think... probably December 9/10, or 15/16 (waiting for exact dates)

Any help to impress women is appreciated!

John

Stay at the Venetian, get into the Venezia tower if possible. They have world class restaurants there.

Both the restaurant at the Eifel Tower and Alize at the Palms have great views with Alize probaly the more romantic of the two.

If you are looking to impress your girl, the Imperial Palace is not going to make a positive impression.

If your trying to impress please stay at either Bellagio, Venetian,Wynn or the new Augustus Tower at Caesars. IP will not impress any woman.

Imperial Palace will not make a good impression but then you also don't have to spend all your money staying at the Bellagio etc.. Even something more middle of the road like MGM, Monte Carlo, Mirage, Cesars. I guess it depends on how high maintenance she is.

The MIrage would be very nice. It has a very nice atmosphere. Great location in middle of strip. I agree with Stephanie

LOL
I guess you can blame me on setting John up at the I.P. but he never told me he was trying to impress anyone.

The I.P does have a King Luv-Tub Suite that might impress just a little bit :D

Oh well, I tried.

I would stay at the Aladdin. It's mid-strip. Price is very reasonable. Upgrade to strip view or fountain view. Still good $. Rooms are clean (fairly new - built in 2001) and bathroom is huge. Seperate roman shower, large jaccuzi tub and seperate room for the toilet. Aladdin is across the street from Bellagio and next to Paris. Hang out at those two places. Good but casual french restaurant in the shopping area of Paris. Ride to the top of the Eiffel tower ($9 per person) just before sunset. Watch the many different fountain shows at Bellagio (free) Take a cab to Freemont street. Hang out there for several hours one evening. (free + cab fare) Just my thoughts. good luck!

I agree with the others concerning the hotels Bellagio, Mirage, Monte Carlo (just recently renovated their rooms), etc.

If she doesn't mind flying, a nighttime helicopter ride is very romantic. I think they serve wine or champagne; check the web for some reputable, safe helicopter tours. It is a little expensive but a wonderful way to impress a woman. I am a woman so I know.

I am not sure if you plan to rent a car but a nice ride to Red Rock Canyon would be nice. I think there is a 15 mile scenic ride you can take. Have the hotel make a picnic lunch for you and take it with you on the ride. There are plenty of picnic areas up there. Hopefully the weather will be Fall like. Red Rock can be 10-15 degree cooler than Vegas so take a jacket.

Don't forget to write a trip report and tell us how it all went. Good Luck.

Thanks for the tips so far! OK, the IP is out then! Looks like Aladdin or Monte Carlo... and I really like that helicopter trip idea. That's the kind of thing I'm looking for!

Thanks again, and will report back on how it all went!

Hello John,

I am also from the UK and visit Las Vegas at least once a year !

One of the best places to eat is the Grand Cafe Lux at the Venitian. At weekends it does get busy so call and make a reservation.

However it is open 24 hours, so you could always chance and just pop along. They have a nice bar for drinks and the food is just amazing and very reasonably priced.

I have been here four times in two visits and recommed it to everyone. Its located on the ground floor of the Casino.

Dont stay at IP !!!!

Check out some websites for offers. We had MGM and got a free upgrade to a Celebrity Spa Suite which had a huge jacuzzi tub !!!!

Have a brilliant time,

LA, South London ;)

Even on the weekends, December is a good time of year to get less expensive rooms. So book your hotel, but make sure it is refundable if you cancel (they usually charge the 1st night when you reserve) Then, keep watching the web for specials at the hotel of your dreams.

Another way to impress is to have a limo waiting for you at the airport, and take the drive up the strip. Have the limo company put her name on the card the driver will be holding, when he picks you up. Get one with champagne and roses! I've heard that will set you back $150 or so.

My girlfriends and I are going to Vegas in December and have surfed the net for every available deal right now - The Luxor beats all the other comparable hotels by far...I've stayed there a few years ago on my first trip and I loved it there. First trip with that guy and I was impressed! ;)

Stay at any ritzy place on the strip. But you might try going to the Voodoo Lounge at the Rio for some entertainment. 50 floors up, good food, dressy casual, great view of the strip at night. There is a cover charge. $20.00 person if I remember correctly. Go the Harrahs website and check it out. Click on the Casino locator, find the Rio on the pull down screen, click entertainment and see if it fits you. You can get a copy of the menu by clicking on dining.
The Rio is kind of a fun place to go. It's different from most of the other casinos. Masquerade Show in the Sky is neat if you haven't seen it before. You probably would not want to stay there as it is not on the strip, however they sometimes have good deals on rooms, but the decor is pretty blah unless you want to upgrade to something more expensive. It's behind Caesars across the highway.

I think Steve was on the right track as the IP won't kill your budget and you could try the old, 'let's see if we can get a suite upgrade' trick ;) . Most strip hotels have excellent premium rooms.

There's lots to do cheaply; the volcano, the atrium and the fountains at Bellagio, Fremont street experience, Masquerade Show in the Sky at the Rio, etc.... For something romantic, you could do the Gondolas at the Venetian.

While the price was high  , dinner at the Top of The World at the Stratosphere was quite romantic. This resturant at the top of the tower revolves around once an hour. I had the timing planned so that we watched the sun go down over the desert and the watch the strip come into view after the sun went down.

The other suggestion for the Eiffel Tower restaurant is also very good and romantic!

Lots of views at the Palms (Ghost Bar) and Rio (Voodo) also. One recommendation: lunch al fresco at Mon Ami Gabi (Paris). Sit outside on the strip, under umbrellas, sipping wine and eating baguettes, watching the strip go by with the Bellagio fountains as a backdrop for sight & sound  .

Man, I love that town!! :)
