Lucky 7: New Things to Do in Vegas This Summer
    BY: Rick Garman/www.vegas4visitors.com

Memorial Day is coming up and that signals the start of the summer travel season as people pack up their suitcases and SUVs and hit the road (literally or metaphorically) to take their annual vacations. The one place most of those people don't go is Las Vegas. June, July, and August are traditionally the slowest months of the year as the convection oven temperatures and a general lack of things to do for the sullen teenagers that are often in the back of those SUVs conspire to keep people away.

The good news for sun-worshipers and those who are either always or temporarily without kids is that low visitation usually brings low room rates. I did a quick check of a handful of hotels and found rates during the week as low as $40 at Luxor and The Flamingo, $80 at Mandalay Bay, and hovering around $100 at Caesars Palace. Those rates are as much as half of what you would expect to pay during busier times of the year.

And if you do decide to take advantage of the low prices to plan a summer trip to Vegas, there are several debuts coming up that you may want to add to your Things to Do list.

    Venetian/Palazzo Carnevale

The summer festival is back for a second year at The Venetian and Palazzo. Based on the summer festivals at villages around Italy, Carnevale in Vegas will feature live entertainment, food and wine tastings, costumed characters, and a 3-D laser light show projected on to the front of the hotel nightly. It runs from May 27 through September 8.

Michael Jackson One by Cirque du Soleil

The King of Pop returns to the stage in the form of this Cirque spectacle celebrating the music of Michael Jackson. Sneak peeks seem to indicate the show will do for MJ what LOVE did for The Beatles, with remixed and remastered versions of hits like "Billie Jean," "Beat It," "Bad," and "Smooth Criminal" accompanying dance, acrobatics, and eye-popping visuals. Preview performances start May 23 at Mandalay Bay and with the official opening in June.

    Light/Daylight

Speaking of Cirque du Soleil, the first ever Cirque themed nightclub is expected to open Memorial Day weekend, also at Mandalay Bay. The nightclub will feature Cirque-style visuals and performers designed to give it a dream-like atmosphere. The day club will operate at a new pool and will feature DJs, multiple bars, and lots of pretty people in skimpy bathing suits (if the scene at other day clubs is repeated here).

    JabbaWockeeZ

After successful runs at the MGM Grand and Monte Carlo, the hip-hop dance troupe JabbaWockeeZ is getting their own custom built theater at Luxor. The group specializes in "how do they do that" popping and locking done in an irreverent style that is a must for any dance fan. The new show debuts May 18.

A sneak peek of Cirque du Soleil’s ‘Michael Jackson One’ at Mandalay Bay
    BY: Robin Leach/Las Vegas sun

In advance of our “Michael Jackson One” by Cirque du Soleil report and photo gallery to be posted this afternoon from this morning’s official sneak peek, I can tell you that the 26 scenes with 60 performers includes 70 percent of the late King of Pop’s No.1 hits — all full length.

The Mandalay Bay sound system will allow the front-stage speakers to play Michael’s lead vocals, while the headset speakers at each seat will have his background vocals. I’m told that it will be as if the audience was in the recording studio with Michael, as it is the raw audio of the master recordings just as the engineers heard it.

Again, there is no one performer playing Michael onstage, but video and audio footage of the singer envelops the plot of four unexpected characters who each portray Michael’s storytelling personality of courage, love, playfulness and agility. It is a character-driven story, and Creative Director Welby Altidor and writer and show Director Jamie King say, “We build his presence through his voice and feel his shadow as he becomes more and more present through the show. Then the apex, the moment where we’ll really feel that, he’s there, and he’s still with us.”

This raking is restricted to a single scene, or the “One” scene today at Mandalay Bay, where an invitation-only showcase of the new Cirque du Soleil production “Michael Jackson One” bounded out for the first time.

Four scenes in the renovated Mandalay Bay Theater were performed to give guests a taste of what’s to come at the show’s preview opening May 23. The premiere of what will be the eighth Cirque show on the Strip is June 29.

Frankie Scinta on ‘The Scintas’ trek back to town and performing without Chrissi.
    BY: John Katsliomentes/Las Vegas Sun

“The Scintas” have been one of the city’s best-known live acts since opening more than a decade ago at Las Vegas Hilton’s Shimmer Cabaret. During that time, the family act has featured three Scintas — Frankie, Joe and Chrissi — performing a series of high-energy comedy and musical numbers. Their drummer and music director is “adopted Scinta” Peter O’Donnell. That lineup also has headlined at The Rio and Sahara and more recently has played weekend dates at Suncoast Showroom.

The Scintas returned to a Las Vegas residency this spring, at The D Las Vegas, but Chrissi has been absent because of vocal chord surgery. As the act continues to build its audience on Fremont Street, it awaits word on when — or even if — Chrissi is to return. Stepping into the role previously occupied by Chrissi is Janien Valentine, who, like the family itself, is from Buffalo, N.Y.

Last week, Frankie Scinta was interviewed by Tricia McCrone and me on “Kats With the Dish” for the show airing at 7 a.m. Friday on KUNV 91.5-FM. Highlights of the show:

First look: What the entrance to the Linq will look like.\BY: Ed Komenda/www.vegasinc.com

Caruso Affiliated, which is developing and managing the Linq project for Caesars Entertainment, recently uploaded a 51-second video showing what the Linq’s entrance will look like. The video featured a multi-colored LED display decorated with the Linq’s logo and a running stream of advertisements below it. It has since been removed online.

While it’s tall, the marquee appears much smaller than the recently unveiled marquee at Aria. At 250 feet tall packed with 11 million pixels, Aria’s marquee is the largest on the Strip.

Linq is slated for the space between the Flamingo the Quad. The $550-million project will include a pedestrian shopping, dining and entertainment district anchored by a 550-foot observation wheel.

Hard Rock Hotel’s Rehab is still sizzling at 10 years: ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’
    BY: Andrea Domanick/Las Vegas Weekly

With trends and novelty driving the pulse of the Las Vegas party scene, perhaps the most interesting thing about Rehab, the famed Sunday pool party at the Hard Rock Hotel, is that it hasn’t changed much since it opened 10 years ago. Its central pool has been expanded and renovated, as has the performance stage graced by the likes of Lady Gaga and Deadmau5 over the years.

By and large, however, the space still looks plucked from the storybook fantasies of a wandering desert nomad, a rock- and palm-encircled paradise complete with waterfalls and sand beaches, and — depending on whose fantasy — some of the most tanned and toned bodies Las Vegas has to offer.

“It’s a pool that takes you out of Vegas and makes you feel like you’re at a beach. The music we bring in keeps it relevant, but the actual atmosphere remains the same, and there’s nothing that really touches that,” says Hard Rock Vice President of Nightlife and Daylife Michael Goodwin of the party, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this month.

By June, the extravagant ‘Priscilla’ will be ready to rumble.
    BY: John Katsliomentes/Las Vegas Sun

This is a question of “emphasis.”

The plot of “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert -- The Musical” incorporates many mainstream elements, including a father-son duet of “Always on My Mind” and “I Say a Little Prayer.”

But the musical’s storyline is not so middle-of-the-fairway, centering on three drag queens rumbling across The Australian Outback in a semi-reliable bus dubbed “Priscilla.”

This being Las Vegas, one guess as to which of “Priscilla’s” qualities is being emphasized.

Britney Spears awaits approval for start date of Planet Hollywood run.
    BY: Robin Leach/Las Vegas Sun

Pop princess Britney Spears is heading to Las Vegas with an initial two-year deal of some 40 alternating weekend shows at Planet Hollywood’s PH Live, but still unknown is the start date. However, ambitious plans for a major splash to announce all the details are under way.

“It’s a very large, moving jigsaw puzzle -- there are so many parts to this,” I was reliably told. “Key people want tickets to go on sale at the same time as the official announcement about the contract signing and show details are released.

“There will be a major marketing and advertising effort behind this. There will be a press conference in Las Vegas and other events with Britney, plus, major world TV coverage and photography.”

The Scintas Debut at the D.

Beginning tonight, The Scintas join the exciting entertainment lineup in the newly renovated showroom at the D Las Vegas. The group, known for their dynamic music, comedic antics and spot-on impersonations, will perform at the downtown property Wednesday – Sunday at 9 p.m. three weeks per month.

Voted one of the top five shows in Las Vegas, brothers Frank and Joe Scinta along with Peter O’Donnell continue to dazzle audiences with their passionate and energetic performance. Joe and Frank’s impersonations of Frank Sinatra, Tom Jones, Ray Charles, Dean Martin and many other great entertainers give guests the opportunity to relive some of the most celebrated performances of all time.

Joining the Scintas for their new show at the D is popular Las Vegas performer and former PEEPSHOW star Janien Valentine. Valentine has starred in a number of musicals across the country and has been voted "Best Female Singer and Thespian" by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The new show will be a mix of Scinta favorites alongside new material and musical elements. The group plans to incorporate more spontaneous audience interaction in a less-structured setting than their previous shows. A new horn section will join the musical ensemble delivering the sounds of a full orchestra and notable names and friends of the Scintas will continue to make special guest appearances.

“We have been waiting a long time to have a place to call home and are excited to be moving downtown to the D,” said Frankie Scinta.

“The Scintas show is exactly what we have been looking for to be our headlining act at the D,” said Owner and CEO Derek Stevens, “Their show reminds audiences of old-school Las Vegas and seamlessly fits into the vintage theme on our second floor.”

Show tickets start $39.95. For $99, guests are invited to enjoy a special dinner and show package, which includes a three-course gourmet meal at Joe Vicari’s Andiamo Italian Steakhouse. Dinner begins with a house salad, followed by a choice of Filet Mignon, Mediterranean Salmon, Lobster Risotto or Roast Chicken and concludes with a signature dessert. Andiamo, which opened last month at the D, serves gourmet Italian cuisine and offers a level of luxury and service previously unavailable in the downtown market. The award-winning restaurant concept is the first venture outside of Michigan for ...

New rooms are just the beginning of the Gold Coast’s renovations.
    BY: Ed Komenda/www.vegasinc.com

Contractors are putting the finishing touches on 400 refurbished hotel rooms at the Gold Coast.

The rooms, which are expected to reopen in the next two weeks, feature new wall coverings, carpets, blackout drapes and furniture, including armoires, dressers and desks.

"We felt it was time to reinvest in our product, providing our guests with a modern, boutique-like hotel experience,” said Kerrie Burke, vice president and general manager of the Gold Coast, which is owned by Boyd Gaming.

Beds have new mattresses, comforters and pillows. In the bathrooms, there are new quartz countertops and fixtures, with porcelain tile on the shower walls and floors. Living areas now include digital temperature controls, high-definition televisions and new alarm clocks.

The next phase of the renovation, scheduled to begin this summer, will include installing new carpeting in Gold Coast's 87,000-square-foot casino and replacing all of its slot stands and chairs.

Gold Coast Debuts New Premium Rooms.
    From: www.vegaschatter.com

For those interested in a stay at Gold Coast, the word on Vegas travel sites has been to ask for the updated accommodations. Now, guests of the off Strip property may be tempted seek out the newer, updated rooms.

Gold Coast is finishing the roll out for its Premium accommodations which, according to Vegas Inc., will feature "new wall coverings, carpets, blackout drapes and furniture" as well as new just about everything else including new beds and bedding, HD TVs, alarm clocks, and more.

The photo above is of the new accommodation. Below is a photo of the now, older updated rooms, known as Deluxe. A check of rates found Deluxe rooms can be had for a little as $28 and as much as $149. A Premium accommodation will increase those rates, on average, an extra $10 to $20 a night.

Of course, when staying at the Gold Coast, you'll also need to factor in the $3 daily resort fee (includes calls, in-room coffee, gym access, shuttle service to Strip and parking) and, if you need it, the $4.99/$9.99 charge for Internet connectivity (pricing for basic or 'elite' service, respectively).

Caesars Entertainment, Gansevoort Hotel Group and Victor Drai to open boutique lifestyle hotel on the Las Vegas Strip.

Gansevoort Las Vegas, a one-of-a-kind lifestyle experience, to replace
Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall & Saloon, set to open in early 2014

Caesars Entertainment Corporation announced today the collaboration with New York-based luxury hotel brand Gansevoort Hotel Group and nightlife impresario Victor Drai to launch a never before seen Las Vegas experience creating an intimate urban resort at the current location of Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall & Saloon. At the heart of the Strip on the prime corner of Las Vegas Blvd. and Flamingo Road, Gansevoort Las Vegas is planned to open in early 2014.

As the only standalone boutique resort, perfectly situated at the center of the Strip, Gansevoort Las Vegas’ exceptionally high standard of style and service will redefine the boutique hotel experience. Glitterati and everyday guests alike will receive the ultimate in VIP treatment and unique social experiences.

Gansevoort Las Vegas will be the fourth installment of the luxury hospitality brand following the recent success of Gansevoort Park Avenue in New York. Following a $185 million renovation, Gansevoort’s iconic style will completely reimagine the hotel experience in Las Vegas, creating the only intimate property among the Strip’s towering skyscrapers. Gansevoort Las Vegas will feature 188 Parisian apartment-style guest rooms including 19 suites, designed by Tandem Las Vegas. An intimate lobby space will welcome guests upon arrival, with a redesigned lobby bar, ultra-lounge, retail outlets, and 40,000 square-foot casino providing a unique upscale energy. A destination restaurant overlooking the Strip will round out the guest experience.

“We are confident that the Gansevoort Las Vegas will be unlike anything that exists in Las Vegas today,” said Michael Achenbaum, co-owner and president, Gansevoort Hotel Group. “The property will provide all the amenities of a mega-resort in an intimate and personalized setting.”

Gansevoort Las Vegas will also feature another first for Las Vegas – the creation of Drai’s Beach Club, Victor Drai’s reinvention of Las Vegas nightlife featuring a 65,000 square-foot indoor/outdoor nightclub and rooftop pool experience. Drai’s Beach Club will be one of the most sought after dayclub/nightclub spaces in the city, boasting breathtaking panoramic views high above the Las Vegas Strip. The legendary After Hours by Drai will also return in the same location with its discrete underground and intimate vibe, offering its dedicated club goers an all new experience.
