It’s definite: Garth Brooks confirms Las Vegas residency.
BY: Robin Leach/www.vegasdeluxe.com
Country king Garth Brooks confirmed this morning in Nashville his new residency at Steve Wynn’s casino hotels, and full details are forthcoming shortly.
The residency ends Garth’s self-imposed retirement that began back in late 2000 when the 47-year-old wanted more time with his three children.
Beginning at 7 a.m. Pacific Time, Garth is talking with reporters in Nashville for the next hour about the decision. Then they will join him on a flight to Las Vegas, arriving here before noon.
At 1 p.m., I’ll be at the former Danny Gans Theatre in the Wynn when our Las Vegas media mob gets to hear from Garth and hotel tycoon Steve Wynn, and then I have a lot of questions at lunchtime.
We expect the run to start as a total of 16 weeks of concerts starting in 2010. Garth’s appearances will be keyed to major holidays, and he will move into a Las Vegas home with his wife, country singer Trisha Yearwood, and his three children.
Speaking in Nashville, Garth said: “We're going to take the retirement roof off over our head, and I already feel taller.”
Garth said he has no immediate plans to resume touring and will make a decision about that after he sees the reaction to the Wynn engagements.
“As for touring, if I can’t eat it, sleep it, breathe it, then it ain’t me,” Garth said.
It’s all as we reported here last week — click HERE for that story. We’ll file real-time reports on Twitter and then update with a full story and photos after the interviews today.
Congratulations to Steve for the coup! The shows, which should sell out by this weekend, will be a tremendous tourism boost to the Strip.

LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
If Garth Brooks and Steve Wynn had anything close to a sticking point, ticket prices might have been the issue.
"This is where we really went at it," Brooks said Thursday.
But that as well as all the other details were sorted out leading the biggest-selling solo performer of all time to end his retirement with an extended engagement at the Wynn Las Vegas.
Brooks admitted he wanted cheaper tickets. He charged $35 for his first Las Vegas show, in 1991 at the Desert Inn, which stood where the Wynn does now.

Steve's Las Vegas Quickies:
Good news, bad news about Lotus of Siam, the ultra-popular Thai restaurant in the Commercial Mall off East Sahara. First the bad: It's closing after Thanksgiving. The good news: The closure is only for three weeks, for an expansion.

An illuminating glove worn by Michael Jackson during his 1984 Victory Tour, fetched $70,800.
Comedian Bobby Slayton left the Tropicana at the end of September. He had a contract until May. He's shooting a Showtime special next month.
It was more than the music that scored in the recent run of Cheap Trick shows at the Las Vegas Hilton for Sgt. Pepper Live. Producer Bill Edwards and the rockers donated $20,000 from booming ticket sales to support the emergency health and human service and addiction recovery programs of MusiCares and the music education programs of the Grammy Foundation. A portion of every ticket sold during the Hilton run was donated to these nonprofits of The Recording Academy.

The Conservatory & Botanical Gardens has transitioned to the fall display, which features autumnal colors, a 35-foot-tall cider mill, 13-foot scarecrow, a 10-foot-tall mythical tree made of recycled paper and wood. The exhibit is free to the public and will be on display through November 28th.
MIKE WEATHERFORD: New Hard Rock Cafe adds to live music scene.
The new Hard Rock Cafe brings a new entertainment venue to the Strip, but it's more modest than the big Joint most Las Vegans associate with the Hard Rock name.
Hard Rock Live is on the third floor of the new eatery next to the Showcase mall. It's a 21,000-square-foot room with a capacity of about 600 seated, or 1,200 for shows without tables and chairs.
The venue will host two or three ticketed events per month, starting Sunday with Dark Star Orchestra, a Grateful Dead tribute. A grand opening event with Chris Cornell officially christens the room Oct. 15.

NORM: Goodman to land on 'Planet Holly'
It was only a matter of time before Mayor Oscar Goodman and Holly Madison joined forces.
Goodman will be joining her next week when filming begins on her VH1 reality show, "Planet Holly," at Planet Hollywood Resort.
His appearance will involve him naming five things that will make Las Vegas better; she will then go out and do those five things.
The mayor talked about his participation on Thursday during his weekly media sitdown.
He also mentioned that he will be narrating another reality show about Vegas.

HEIDI'S PICKS By Heidi Knapp Rinella/LVRJ
THE GRAPE
Town Square, 6599 Las Vegas Blvd. South; 220-4727
Two things surprised us about The Grape: That the wine list wasn't more broad, and that the food was so good. We thoroughly enjoyed our glasses of 2007 Two Hands Gnarly Dudes Barossa Valley Shiraz, however, as well as a classic Caesar salad; cambozola, prosciutto and fig flatbread; baked brie in pastry; and a tenderloin steak sandwich. (6/19/09)
Overall: A- $$
LAWRY'S THE PRIME RIB
4043 Howard Hughes Parkway; 893-2223
Lawry's the Prime Rib has a limited menu — mostly prime rib cut at the table by a guy pushing a domed silver cart, with a couple of seafood selections and a ribeye steak tossed in — but maybe it's just that stick-to-what-you-know philosophy that had made the company so consistently reliable for 70 years. We love the prime rib (both the California cut and the slightly larger Lawry cut) and also the crisp-crusted sourdough bread, Spinning Bowl Salad, mashed potatoes, creamed corn and lovely Yorkshire pudding. (11/20/08)
Overall: A $$$
MARKET GRILLE CAFE
7920 W. Tropical Parkway; 396-0070 (also at 7175 W. Lake Mead Blvd.)
This sure doesn't look like a counter-service restaurant and the food sure doesn't taste like it. It's actually more of a hybrid since the food is brought to the table on real dishes and with real flatware. The Greek cuisine is the real deal, too, and we say "Opa!" to the dolmades, saganaki, pomegranate chicken, moussaka and — talk about something living up to the name — Aphrodite's Cheesecake, which is on a baklava crust. (10/10/08)
Overall: A $$
MARSSA
Loew's Lake Las Vegas, 101 Montelago Blvd., Henderson; 567-6125
Marssa's happy hour is a little unusual in that it's only an hour, fairly late as these things go — 6 to 7 p.m.– and Tuesday through Saturdays, instead of just weekdays. We think that's a bid to get people to come in and try the place, and it works, because Marssa puts on an awfully good face during happy hour. We were particularly enamored of the crunchy salmon roll, the beef kushiage and the lumpia, and the sake portion that was very generous at happy-hour prices. (10/2/09)
Overall: A- $$

SHOW REVIEW: Mystery key to entertainment value of Strip's mentalism shows. BY Mike Weatherford/LVRJ
Can we get that cool-guy TV mentalist to come and explain these Las Vegas mentalists so we can move on?
Both "The Mentalist" at the V Theater and "Mental" at O'Sheas can thank the CBS hit "The Mentalist" for at least getting people to look twice at their ads.
But TV Sherlock Patrick Jane (played by Simon Baker) is a reformed phony psychic who figures out mysteries. Two Las Vegas mentalists hope you can't.
And if one day their secrets creep into the public domain? Then they're basically toast. That's the thing about mentalists: It's the one niche of magic that's still genuinely baffling and all about fooling you. But if that ever ceases to be the case, there isn't a lot of entertainment value beyond the mystery.

SHOW REVIEW: "A Bronx Tale"
'Tale' of Two Cities: Palminteri's touching, funny 'Bronx' a good fit in Las Vegas.
By MIKE WEATHERFORD
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
They say there is a book in everyone's life story. But you'd rather read some than others.
Chazz Palminteri's youth found him under the wing of a neighborhood mob capo as his surrogate father. An interracial crush ended in "West Side Story" tragedy.
Small wonder that when an Actor's Studio pedigree failed to put Palminteri on the map 20 years ago, "A Bronx Tale" did.
For the past two years, the 57-year-old actor and writer has been back on the boards with his star-making vehicle. A middle-age man steps back into his youth under a prop street-corner sign of 187th and Belmont and still makes it uniquely thrilling; resonant and personal, but told in a showy, one-man format seldom seen in these parts.

WOBBLY FINALE BY Norm Clarke/LVRJ
Some observations after seeing "America's Got Talent Live," which on Wednesday opened a 10-week run at Planet Hollywood Resort:
Thursday's finale on media night, I thought, ended on a flat note — or two — when country singer Kevin Skinner, the Kentucky chicken farmer who won the $1 million prize last month, struggled vocally with "Sweet Home Alabama."
He was out of his comfort zone. And it's going to need a bigger finish.
The night before, I'm told, Skinner received some boos.
On a happier note, I saw something during Thursday's show that I've rarely witnessed in a decade on the entertainment beat: numerous standing ovations. The crowd gets into it, most likely because they followed their favorites on the NBC series.
Opera singer Barbara Padilla, a cancer survivor, created the biggest stir.
Exit surveys were very high, in the 90s, I'm told. With some shoring up, it could be a Strip surprise.

Infinite Imagination.
Cirque du Soleil submerges the senses with sensational production.
BY: Kiko Miyasato/Las Vegas Magazine
Drip, drip. Drip, drop. Drip, drip drop. The sound of trickling water envelops the theater. A giant red curtain hangs luminously over the stage. Two roaming clowns toy with the audience. What's in store as the lights dim and the curtain lifts still astounds theatergoers after 11 years. Cirque du Soleil's "O" is a timeless piece of aquatic artistry. Through visually stimulating vignettes, the unconventional show is sure to reawaken your imagination.
"O" made its debut on Oct. 15, 1998, on the eve of Bellagio's opening. Cirque du Soleil's second show to open on the Strip (Mystère at Treasure Island is the first) broke the mold of traditional theater, even by Cirque standards, by turning the stage into a 1.5 million gallon pool of water. However, throughout the performance a platform rises out of the water to create different landscapes. The innovative technology used in the show is the vehicle that drives the world of "O."
Following the story of "O" is akin to following a dream. With no particular plot, the audience is taken into a world of visceral imagery. The basic elements – earth, water, air and fire – come to life. Each scene evokes emotion, wonder and awe. Vignettes stretch our imagination between the real and the surreal. It's as if you're staring at a Salvador Dalí painting come to life where mismatched objects pair up to make a sublime whole.
And it's the cast of performers, composed of world-class trapeze artists and synchronized swimmers, remarkable high divers, contortionists, aerialists, dancers and clowns, that keeps "O" so high in theatergoers' esteem. In one scene a large steel ship fl oats above the stage and hovers over the giant pool of water. As the ship sways back and forth, gymnasts catch and release one another as they fl y through a series of parallel bars. Another scene summons the element of fire as the lights in the theater dim, the stage turns solid and dancers perform intricate fire dances as fl ames lick the air. In a jaw-dropping scene, a ladder hangs from the top of the theater over the pool. High divers ascend the ladder where a platform outlined by a glowing circle awaits. You can hear the audience collectively gasp as the divers jump off and perform beautiful twists, turns and somersaults and land safely in the water.
It's the combination of superior performance and phantasmal topography that make "O" so breathtaking. The aquatic journey is one that connects with even the most linear of minds.

Signed, Sealed and Delivered.
Human Nature: BY: Jack Houston/Las Vegas Magazine
Consider the following: Four white boys from Australia singing Motown hits at a hotel on the Las Vegas Strip modeled after a Chinese palace. The thought just spins the head a little, doesn't it? You might call it crazy, but William "Smokey" Robinson calls it Human Nature.
Touted by the Motown pioneer and "My Girl" composer, Human Nature has earned dozens of accolades and hit records back home but remain largely unknown in the U.S. That should all change once audiences get a whiff of Michael and Andrew Tierney, Toby Allen and Phil Burton, four childhood friends who have undertaken the unenviable task of performing some of the biggest hits from the Motown songbook.
After a video introduction by Robinson, the boys get to work with a medley of "Dancing in the Street" and "You Keep Me Hangin' On." Things hit a high point with a version of the timeless "What's Going On" and during "Stop! In the Name of Love," where the group takes time to teach the audience a few Motown moves.
Where they really shine, however, is the more intimate moments, such as when the four members perform renditions of "People Get Ready" and "Ooo Baby Baby" without accompaniment. The a cappella performances prove that Human Nature are worthy of the material and that Robinson, in his sixth decade in the business, still has an ear for talent.

Imperial Palace is pleased to announce that “Frank Marino’s Divas Las Vegas” recently signed a one-year contract to deliver dynamic performances six nights a week at 10 p.m. in the Imperial Theater starting Oct. 17.
Presented by comedic icon and Strip headliner of more than 25 years, Frank Marino, Divas Las Vegas is a 75-minute energetic and over-the-top production featuring 16 male, lady look-alikes impersonating some of music and entertainment’s biggest superstars including Cher, Beyonce, Diana Ross, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Celine Dion and Tina Turner. Marino acts as the emcee for the production, portraying Joan Rivers and in a variety of her more infamous styles of decades past.
“I am so excited to be working at the Imperial Palace and to be a part of the Harrah’s family. After all doesn't every Queen need a Palace to call home?” said Marino.
Marino’s “Queens” will be decked out in flamboyant and fabulous costumes by world-renowned wardrobe designer Bob Mackie. Mackie is most famous for designing clothing and costumes for Cher, but has also created masterpieces for an impressive roster of A-list celebrities including Diana Ross, Barbra Streisand and Steve Martin.
Each of the 16 acts is set to a high-energy music medley appropriate to the individual performer. Hollywood’s top set designer Andy Walmsley (creator of sets for American Idol, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire) is creating an all-new custom set that will be unveiled at the Imperial Palace in early 2010. Six of Sin City’s most electrifying back up dancers round out the on-stage spectacle of “Divas Las Vegas”
“Frank Marino’s Divas Las Vegas” is co-produced by Adam Steck, CEO of SPI Entertainment. Steck also produces the hit Motown tribute show, “Smokey Robinson Presents: Australia’s Human Nature – The Ultimate Celebration of the Motown Sound” at the Imperial Palace.
“I'm thrilled to join with Las Vegas entertainment icon Frank Marino in co-producing one of the biggest and best drag shows of its kind," said Steck.
Marino is an accomplished author, newscaster, columnist and spokesperson and often refers to himself as “America’s Favorite Male Actress.” In Marino’s 25 years of show business, he has performed for more than ten million people and in 2005 Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman declared Feb. 1 “Frank Marino Day.”
“Frank Marino’s Divas Las Vegas” performs six nights a week (Dark Fridays) at 10 p.m. Tickets are on sale now. Ticket prices are $69 (plus tax & fees) and VIP $79 (plus tax & fees) and are available at the Imperial Palace box office, online at www.imperialpalace.com or by calling (888) 777-7664. King’s All Star Band nightly.
Step into the role of a crime scene investigator at CSI: The Experience at MGM Grand. Based on the top-rated television series, this interactive exhibit challenges guests to solve one of three true-to-life mysteries using real scientific principles and investigative techniques.
Two of The Strip’s newest headliners now can be found at Monte Carlo. Popular Las Vegas music act Zowie Bowie and comedian/impressionist Frank Caliendo are must-see experiences. Zowie Bowie’s unique blend of today’s hottest dance, hip-hop and Top 40 music has crowds on their feet dancing to the sizzling sound while Frank Caliendo’s side-splitting comedy features dead-on impressions of such well-known celebrities as Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, Dr. Phil and John Madden.
In just two months, Las Vegas will change forever when CityCenter makes its December debut. Opening December 1, Vdara Hotel & Spa will offer all-suite accommodations to visitors who love the excitement of Vegas but prefer to enjoy it in a more exclusive, non-gaming and smoke-free environment. On December 3, Crystals will become the city’s preeminent shopping destination, pairing dramatic architecture with some of the world’s most elite brands including Louis Vuitton, Hermès and Van Cleef & Arpels. Wayne Newton’s debut preview goes off without a hitch.
BY: Robin Leach/vegasdeluxe.com
Mr. Las Vegas opened his six-month run of Once Before I Go at the Tropicana last night, and the first night of previews went off without a hitch. The grand opening is set for Oct. 28, and Wayne’s show is a celebration of his incredible 50 years as the reigning king of Las Vegas show business. My friend comedy impressionist Rich Natole opened for Wayne last night.
Once Before I Go is an intimate journey through a life spent onstage, from a 15-year-old just off the bus to his place as one of America’s most celebrated entertainment icons. It’s the life story of Wayne told by the man who is living it. It’s a rare opportunity to experience his career through his own eyes, and no other performer has seen 50 years performing for more than 40 million from center stage in the ever-changing Las Vegas. It’s probable nobody else ever will.
Click HERE for our recent one-on-one interview with the legendary entertainer about his new — and probably final — show. Wayne is using state-of-the-art technology, plus the latest in photos and videos, to tell his half-century journey, many of which have never been seen.

Heidi's Picks by Heidi Knapp Rinella/LVRJ
CREATE
7290 W. Lake Mead Blvd.; 586-0430
Our burgers were overcooked because we were unaware they could be done to order (next time we'll know), but we liked most everything else about Create, including the upbeat (if a little personal) attitude of management and employees. The Impressionist burger was just spicy enough with its jalapenos, pepperjack cheese and atomic mayo, and our do-it-yourself option was pretty much as ordered. Also worthy of note: nice crispy fries (both sweet potato and regular), and truly delicious frozen custard. (1/23/09)
Overall: B $
PRIMARILY PRIME RIB
South Point, 9777 Las Vegas Blvd. South; 797-8075
The food at Primarily Prime Rib is pretty decent but the water is awful. Just awful. That said, our shrimp cocktail had five large, succulent shrimp, off-the-boat fresh and just firm enough; onion rings were crisp and sweet; a South Point cut of prime rib was decently flavored and reasonably priced and although we thought a blackened Cajun-style prime rib a little too tame, that's much better than being a little too wild. (7/18/08)
Overall: B $$
RAO'S
Caesars Palace, 3570 Las Vegas Blvd. South; (877) 346-4642
We had to reserve well in advance to dine at Rao's; in keeping with the New York original, this is a tough table. Was it worth it? For the most part, yes. Clams oregonata had been overbrowned, but we liked the Insalata Caprese, fettucine alla Bolognese, Uncle Vincent's Famous Lemon Chicken and ricotta cheesecake. (6/1/07)
Overall: B $$$
WOK ON IN
1040 E. Flamingo Road; 892-9480
We sure didn't expect much from Wok On In when we walked on in; the drab atmosphere and little we're-not-real-serious cues like a beer-pong signup sheet get the blame (or credit) for that. But once we filled our bowls from the fresh meats and vegetables on the long buffet line, got them back, cooked, from the wok chef and dug into our creations, we were pretty happy — in large part, we think, because of Wok On In's sauces. A starter of fried wontons was a little on the oily side but fried shrimp were better. Next time we'd skip both and stick with the wok-fried food and the soup and bread that come with them. (10/9/09)
Overall: B+ $

Planet Hollywood's 'America's Got Talent Live!' a fractured variety show.
By Mike Weatherford/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
Vegas is a lot of things to a lot of people. So is America.
Jerry Springer says as much hosting the live version of "America's Got Talent," a show a lot of people will like and a lot of others would laugh right off the stage.
Springer tells the Planet Hollywood Resort audience that when he first saw the country vocal trio The Texas Tenors, he proclaimed, "This is Vegas."
Then the Tenors come out in their cowboy hats and launch into Alabama's "Mountain Music."
It's Vegas all right. Vegas in 1982.

CityCenter Condos Cost Cut
BY Rick Garman
In yet another sign that the economic conditions in Las Vegas are nowhere near to recovering, MGM Mirage has announced plans to drop the prices of more than 2,000 condominium units in three different buildings at CityCenter. How much of a cut? How does 30% sound?
The move was partially spurred by a threatened lawsuit from the people who put deposits on the condos several years ago at the height of the real estate boom. Now saddled with units that are worth significantly less than what they agreed to pay, the owners were looking at being underwater on home values before they even have a chance to move in. The drastic decline brings the units more in line with what most analysts agree is current market value.
Original prices on the units ranged from half a million dollars for a small studio to over $9 million for the massive penthouses and about half of them were under contract. The price cuts are being applied to both sold and unsold units so they are going from insanely expensive to just plain old expensive.

MADAME TUSSAUDS OFFERS FIRST ‘AFTER DARK’ EXPERIENCE
Ten years after its debut, Madame Tussauds Las Vegas is hosting its first Madame Tussauds After Dark starting Oct. 13. The fun is Tuesday through Saturday at 10 p.m. through Oct. 31. The entire attraction will go dark until 1 a.m. Guests will be provided with “glow sticks” to find their way through the entire attraction and around more than 100 celebrity life-like wax figures.
Guests will have a spooky photo opportunity upon arrival and be welcomed by a creepy Madame Tussauds host. The experience will also include a complete blackout, spooky noises, creepy characters, and random blood curdling screams. Admission is $20 and a combo ticket for a regular Madame Tussauds visit and a return “After Dark” visit will be $35.
An eerie note is 200 years ago the real Madame Tussaud first made her living casting death masks from wax. One of her first “clients” was a freshly beheaded Marie Antoinette.
THE SCINTAS WILL RETURN TO THE SUNCOAST
The Scintas will return to the Suncoast Showroom Oct. 30 through Nov. 1. Buffalo, N.Y.-raised brothers Joey and Frankie, sister Chrissi and “Irish Scinta” Peter O’Donnell, provide a show filled with music, comedy and impersonations. Tickets start from $29.95, call 702-636-7075.
Frankie was a musical prodigy and appeared on “The Merv Griffin Show” at age 11. He plays the keyboard in the show and is also a master guitar, mandolin, banjo, drum and bass player. Joey, who originally intended to become a music teacher, developed and mastered his talent for comedy and impressions. The baby of the family, Chrissi, is known for her stunning renditions of the big ballads. Although not related, O’Donnell has been a member of the close-knit clan since 1988. He has played gigs with more than 700 bands.
