Lucky 7: The Best “Cheapest” Hotels
BY: Rick Garman

Money is on everyone’s minds these days and perhaps especially so here in Vegas where the almighty dollar is almighty in just about every way. As visitation has declined (down double digit percentages) so too have room rates, with even “expensive” hotels offering rooms as low as a third or even a quarter of what they used to charge.

But the really good news is that the formerly moderately priced and inexpensive hotels are now, often, dirt cheap. I’ve seen rates at some places as low as $29 and these are for really nice hotel rooms in really nice hotels. Of course not all cheap hotels are created equally, so I thought it was time to take a look at my picks for the Best “Cheapest” Hotels, where you can usually get a very inexpensive room and not feel like you are sacrificing too much in the way of comfort or amenities.

Note that prices vary wildly in this town so you may not always be able to find a cheap room at one of these places, but generally speaking they are usually going to be less than their competitors.

In alphabetical order:

Bally’s
There is nothing overtly fancy about Bally’s – it’s not Palazzo or Wynn Las Vegas – but there is also absolutely nothing wrong with the place. Clean, comfortable, large rooms are filled with well-kept furnishings, the location is perfect, and the prices are often significantly lower than neighboring hotels.

Eastside Cannery
Yes, it’s a bit of a trek to get here (probably 15-20 minutes depending on traffic), but this newer hotel on the east side of town has gorgeous, sleekly modern rooms that will leave so much extra money in your wallet that you won’t care about how many red lights you have to sit through to get there.

Excalibur’s Wide Screen Rooms
The castle’s recently redone “Wide Screen” rooms are a million times better than their standard rooms, which of course normally wouldn’t be saying much but they did a pretty good job on these. They are a few bucks more but it’s still a lot less than what you’ll pay at nearby hotels.

Main Street Station
Downtown Las Vegas’ hidden gem, the Main Street’s rooms are on the small side but they are charming, comfortable, and, most importantly, often very cheap.

Monte Carlo
Looking like a dollhouse next to the soaring CityCenter, the Monte Carlo is literally being overshadowed by its bigger, newer brother. But instead of paying the (expected) exorbitant rates at one of the hotels there, why not stay right next door and save yourself a ton of money?

Silverton
It’s a ten minute drive from the south end of The Strip and while the rooms won’t win any awards, they are nice, well-maintained, and tremendous bargains.

South Point
Just a little further away than Silverton, the South Point ups the ante with stylish rooms (they had flat screens before they were popular) that will make you wonder why people pay five times as much just to stay directly on The Strip.

Colorful Vegas Icon Bob Stupak Dies at 67
BY: Rick Garman

Most of you have never heard the name Bob Stupak, although if you are longtime readers of this column you might remember me referring to him as “Wacky” Bob. Well, the casino developer, colorful character, big time dreamer, and a man who literally changed the skyline of Las Vegas passed away last week at the age of 67 from leukemia. Believe it or not, I meant the Wacky thing in a good way. Bob Stupak was one of the last of his breed; a showman of sorts who realized that the last thing Las Vegas needed was to get all serious. He was constantly in the news, especially during the go-go ‘90s, floating one crazy sounding idea after another. This was the guy who wanted to build a hotel-casino shaped like The Titanic, complete with a shopping mall in the iceberg.

But perhaps his most audacious idea was to build the tallest structure in Las Vegas and one of the tallest in the United States. The fact that he quickly lost The Stratosphere after it sank into bankruptcy shortly after opening is really not the point… he got it built and considering the fact that it was done more out of sheer moxie than anything else points to how good the guy really was.

Stupak grew up in Pittsburgh, the son of a reputed mobster who ran the underground gambling rackets in the city. As a young adult he did everything from running his own illegal card and dice games to singing and recording under the name Bobby Star.

He came to Vegas in the early ‘70s, buying a tiny parcel of land just north of Sahara Avenue along Las Vegas Boulevard. In 1974 he opened his first Vegas business and, always a master of hyperbole, named it Bob Stupak’s World Famous Historic Gambling Museum and Casino. The joke was that the name was “10 feet longer than the building.”

The place burned down less than three months after it opened but Stupak used the insurance money to open Vegas World in 1979, a 20-story hotel-casino that became a favorite for serious gamblers.

The Stratosphere was his dream project, as outsized as his personality and ego. Originally the place was going to be the tallest building in the world at 1,800 feet but the FAA put the kibosh on that saying it would be a danger to planes flying into the nearby airport. He settled for 1,049 feet making it the tallest observation tower west of the Mississippi. Ever the gambler – this is a man who bet $1 million on the Super Bowl (and won) – he risked everything he had to get the place built.

A combination of a difficult location (not really walking distance to anything of note) and poor timing quickly sent the Stratosphere into bankruptcy, but Stupak wasn’t done with his big dreams.

He touted his Titanic idea for years, trying to get investors and approvals for a 400-foot long replica of the ship that would’ve had 1,200 rooms, time-shares in the smoke stacks, gangplanks from a parking garage next door, and an iceberg with a shopping mall in it. Neighbors of the project, that was to be built just north of The Stratosphere, objected loudly and the city council killed it.

Stupak spent the last decade of his life a little more quietly than his previous ones, although he could regularly be seen in the World Series of Poker, wagering big as he always did.

Bob Stupak has been called everything from a huckster to the Vegas version of PT Barnum, but I’ll always think of him, lovingly, as Wacky Bob – the guy who “got” Vegas and new how to put on a show.

Lots of people have been asking how Las Vegas can survive and thrive after we come out of the economic downturn into a world that may be thriftier than it was before – a world were people may be unwilling to spend bucket loads of cash like they have for the last couple of decades. I say take a lesson from Wacky Bob: everyone loves a good show.

Happy 65th Birthday greetings to our hero Roy Horn. By Robin Leach.
Las Vegas Sun

I remember it so vividly — as they say, as if it was yesterday. Six years ago this weekend, I stood on a stage at The Mirage, where the Cirque du Soleil Beatles musical Love is performed today, with Masters of the Impossible Siegfried & Roy. We were celebrating Roy Horn’s 59th birthday!

We never dreamed a day later after that happy occasion, we would be standing vigil and praying for Roy as he fought for his life after the tragic accident with 7-year-old male tiger Montecore. Doctors told me at the time that Roy had died three times on the operating table, yet refused to die.

It was to become a medical miracle — and a human miracle because as manager Bernie Yuman told me, “Roy has the strength of a thousand men. He never lost the will to live.” Even when surgeons had to remove a portion of his brain to lessen the swelling and secure it in part of his stomach, Roy continued to fight.

Over the years, Roy has continued to fight. He was told he would never walk again, yet last Christmas, he walked the entire length of the Opportunity Village Santa Claus 5K route. Nobody thought he’d ever perform magic again, yet earlier this year, fulfilling a promise to me, they accepted my invitation to perform again at our annual Keep Memory Alive gala. The incredible event was televised by ABC’s 20/20 as a one-hour special, and Roy won yet another standing ovation.

He has defied all the odds and simultaneously proved everybody wrong. His courage, determination and diligent discipline are humbling. Roy Horn has taught us so much about the true meaning of winning. He has served as an inspiration to so many, and now he’s supporting the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health downtown.

I couldn’t let his 65th birthday tomorrow go by without noting it here on Vegas DeLuxe. His favorite chef, Spago’s David Robbins, will prepare the special birthday dinner at their Jungle Palace home for Roy, Siegfried, Lynette Chappell and their friends. I was there a year ago, but tomorrow I will be in Los Angeles to emcee their friend Wolfgang Puck’s annual chefs benefit fundraiser for Meals on Wheels.

Roy’s journey of recovery has been spectacular and hopefully will continue on gaining in strength. Happy Birthday, Roy: You are an inspiration to all of us, and we are grateful to you for the entertainment you brought us over the years and the lesson of courage and the will to win you still teach us today!

Steve's Las Vegas Quickies:

The Luxor's topless "Fantasy" may be close to signing a name actress to compete more directly with Madison in "Peepshow." Producer Anita Mann said in January she would love to snag Madison "before any other hotel could get her," but Madison apparently wasn't serious about Las Vegas at that point.

The local cast of "Jersey Boys" has imported actor Drew Gehling from the Chicago company to play the role of Bob Gaudio. If there was any question about the return of Erich Bergen, who was dismissed for unexplained reasons, there isn't any more.

"Scarlett and her Seductive Ladies of Magic" closed shop at the Riviera on Monday, opting not to continue beyond a contracted 90-day run. Manager John Lewis says they have signed with a new management company that plans to invest in a whole new — and not topless — show with unique illusions. They hope to open in six months to a year.

Comedian Bobby Slayton has vacated the Tropicana, choosing the road over disputes with management and heavy comedy competition on the Strip. "I just really need to get back out there and make some money," he says. A probable Showtime special could bring him back in a position of strength, he adds.

Impressionist Rich Natole, an afternoon tenant in Slayton's venue, also had to close, at least temporarily, when he had no one to share production costs with.

In Las Vegas, Elvis is still the King. So says "Legends in Concert" producer Brian Brigner, who had to make a call on which icon — Elvis or Michael? — gets to close the show now that both are in the lineup. Damian Brantley, formerly of "American Superstars," joined the Harrah's Las Vegas lineup last week as Michael Jackson.

After a four-year run, The Comedy Festival at Caesars Palace is "taking the year off," leaving the door open to a future return.

A Garth Brooks Web site is abuzz over chatter that he has an Oct. 15 news conference scheduled regarding the Wynn Las Vegas offer.

Esquire has selectedSociety Café inside the Encore at Wynn Las Vegas as one of the Best New Restaurants in America for 2009. Chef Kim Canteenwalla’s wealth of upscale American signature dishes, including mac ‘n’ cheese with truffle dipping sauce and lobster roll club with pancetta and avocado, may have had something to do with the selection.
From October 25, British Airways will join Virgin Atlantic in offering daily non-stop flights to and from Las Vegas. Unlike Virgin, whose route operates out of London's Gatwick Airport, BA will fly to and from Heathrow's luxurious new Terminal 5. Prices will begin at around £550 ($875) for a round trip, depending on day of travel.

Let's Make a Deal, the game show hosted by Las Vegas headliner Wayne Brady and filmed at the Tropicana debuted today. It will be aired weekly from 9-10 a.m. on CBS.

The annual Forbes 400 list of America's wealthiest individuals reveals a new top dog in the gambling industry. Carl Icahn, majority owner of Tropicana Entertainment, lines up in 22nd spot overall with an estimated net worth of $10.5 billion. Last year's top industry representative, Sheldon Adelson, fell to 26th spot by virtue of a net worth of $9 billion (down from $15 billion last year). Kirk Kerkorian dropped from 27th to 97th with his net worth reduced from $11.2 billion to $3 billion. Others from the gambling industry on the list include Steve Wynn (141st, $2.3 billion), Donald Trump (158th, $2 billion), Phil Ruffin (193rd, $1.85 billion), and Ed Roski, Jr. (236th, $1.5 billion).

The Cafe's at four Station Casinos properties are closed, pending conversion to Coco's restaurants. After a successful debut at Santa Fe, the change is now being implemented at Palace, Boulder, Sunset, and Texas Stations.

Palace Station
has placards in the casino advertising 2-for-1 shots of Patron at all bars. PS (along with all Station and Fiesta casinos) is also offering dollar beers and hot dogs in the sports book during the football games.

The striptease production “Peepshow” at Planet Hollywood has welcomed pop starlet Aubrey O’Day to the cast. She joins Holly Madison, who is in the show for another year.

Las Vegas’ newest headliner, comedian and impressionist Frank Caliendo will begin his 10-year run at the Monte Carlo on Oct. 12 in the Lance Burton Theater.  His show will be a mix of high-energy comedy and fast-paced impressions enhanced by live music, video sketches and much more.  His schedule will be 9:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. Prices range from $59 to $95, call 702-730-7160 or 877-386-8224.

Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday to remember deceased loved ones with the offerings of favorite food and drink. Dos Caminos at The Palazzo will celebrate the holiday with a post-Halloween hangover brunch on Sunday, Nov. 1 from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Word is after seven years the “Coasters, Drifters, Platters” are going to move from the Sahara’s Congo Room to the Steve Wyrick Theater at the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood.

In celebration of longtime Las Vegas casino owner Jackie Gaughan’s 89th birthday, the El Cortez, the oldest continuously operating hotel-casino in the valley that Gaughan owned for years, will be serving birthday cake and champagne on Saturday, Oct. 24 from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.  Players can also sign a giant birthday card, and showgirls and an Elvis impersonator will be on hand.

Fantasy at the Luxor will continue to make some changes. While visiting with Felix Rappaport, president of the Luxor and Excalibur, I learned there's a new set being put in place and there will be some new guest stars arriving this week. The show's original lead Stephanie Jordan - now known as Stephanie Dianna – is focusing on a new CD, a new band and spending quality time with her family. Fantasy producer Anita said Stefanie may become company manager.

Carmen Elektra is headed back to Crazy Horse at the MGM for another guest appearance. The original Crazy Horse was a favorite hang out of mine when I lived in Paris. I understand the MGM's Crazy Horse will be adding more guest stars in addition to Carmen's appearances.

Frank Marino's new show is scheduled to open this month at the Imperial Palace. His reps say it's a done deal, but I haven't heard a firm date yet. In the meantime, Human Nature continues to do good business at the Imperial Palace and their surprise hit of the season is Matt Goss.

Entertainer Tony Sacca is planning to open The Las Vegas Rocks Cafe at Neonopolis. The cafe menu will feature items named after legendary entertainers. Tony, as most of you know, has been a part of the Las Vegas scene since the early 1980's. Hopefully this will be the hit that Neonopolis needs.

JOHN L. SMITH: The Strip's long overdue for street-savvy, soulful show like 'A Bronx Tale'

Our sit-down takes place not in a shadowy social club filled with characters with colorful nicknames, but at a sunlit table at Mimi's Café.

That's my first clue this Chazz Palminteri fellow is the real deal and, thankfully, not just another Hollywood tough guy.

The street of Palminteri's youth comes to life in "A Bronx Tale." Starting Oct. 7, his Memory Lane stretches from a tough street corner to The Venetian showroom with a performance that includes 18 characters in about 90 minutes.

Planet Hollywood, Westgate bringing 1,201 rooms to Strip with PH Towers.

By ARNOLD M. KNIGHTLY
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

While attention has been focused on the bigger project across the street, the 1,201-room PH Towers at Planet Hollywood Resort has been moving toward a December opening.

The tower's opening will be competing for county inspectors' attention with MGM Mirage's CityCenter, which will be opening around the same time.

Meanwhile, construction is continuing on the nearly 20,000-square-foot lobby area overlooking the pool. The lobby area will include a check-in counter, restaurant, Starbucks, a bar and retail space.

Construction is also nearing completion on a 15,000-square-foot convention area and seven additional meeting rooms.

Strip now tattoo conscious.
Social acceptance of body ink means big business, and casinos notice.

By ARNOLD M. KNIGHTLY
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

The marriage of tattoos and Strip casinos is something tattoo artist Mario Barth would never have imagined a few years ago.

"When I saw my logo for the first time on the marquee, I was like, are you kidding me?" said the Austrian-born Barth, who opened his shop, Starlight Tattoo at Mandalay Bay, in February 2008 after two years of talks with the gaming property.

The tattoo industry has gone mainstream and is becoming big business, with nearly 24 percent of all adults in the United States having at least one tattoo, according to a 2006 article published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.

HEIDI'S PICKS BY Heidi Knapp Rinella/Las Vegas Review Journal.

BOULDER DAM BREWING CO.
453 Nevada Way, Boulder City; 243-2739

The beer's the thing here — and so is the only real beer garden in Southern Nevada — but Boulder Dam Brewing Co. offers some pretty solid bar food as well. The bar-staple spinach-and-artichoke dip, for example, was much better than most, and the Brewer's Bratwurst was plump and flavorful. And if the Ploughman's suffered a bit from too-timid cheese and the Bavarian Beer Pretzel was a little too charred, you can't miss with the beer. (10/26/07)

CAFE HEIDELBERG
610 E. Sahara Ave.; 731-5310

Despite a pronounced service shortage (read: one woman to serve the entire restaurant) we enjoyed our dinner at Cafe Heidelberg, thanks to the Old World German soul food. We loved the Bavarian potato soup, a special of creamy curried soup, Leberkase with fried eggs and the Schnitzel Combo, which brings together Wienerschnitzel and Jagerschnitzel. And we sure didn't go away hungry. (5/22/09)

HOFBRAUHAUS LAS VEGAS
4510 Paradise Road; 853-2337

An experience at the Hofbrauhaus has much to do with the room in which one is seated. The rear "indoor beer garden" is almost too quiet, but the raucous front room is more in keeping with the atmosphere of the Munich original. As for the food, the Sauerbraten was a tad on the dry side but the Nurmberger Rostbratwurstl, Bavarian Liver Mousse and Obazter, Swiss cheese with radishes, butter and rye bread, and Schwarzwalder Kirschtorte would make Oma proud. SHOW REVIEW: 'Peepshow'
'Peepshow' more settled with better shot at success.

BY: Mike Weatherford/LVRJ

"Peepshow" really is more of one now. How much more? The singer gets topless before the famous Playmate.

When the singer is nasty girl Aubrey O'Day, it should be no surprise she would shed more than the all-talk Scary Spice (Melanie Brown), who opened the thing in April, or the respectable Broadway performer Shoshana Bean, who fell in between.

Yes, it's early to review the upscale burlesque revue again. Especially since O'Day sounds like a royal mess who might not make it another three weeks, let alone the full three months of her contract. She's already stirred up attention by calling Fidel Castro and Adolf Hitler "brilliant" on FOX News, and by stripping in a YouTube rant after someone sneaked photos of her first show and mocked her on the Internet.

But in all other aspects, "Peepshow" seems more settled now. The original was, as they say on the news, not sustainable. The new edition plays like the "real" one that stands half a chance of making it.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Final curtain not always the end.

Four shows closed last week. But the producer of one told me "closed" is a harsh word. That's because, in their mind, all four will return.

That may explain why Tuesday's final curtain of "Ignite" seemed more routine than the old movie musicals, where the crusty-but-benign producer herds everyone to a bar for a toast and some tears.

Some of the 17 cast and crew members, still in costume, chatted with friends and family who came to cheer their final show at the Greek Isles. Others lingered in street clothes as the castle walls of the heavy-metal fire show were wheeled away.

I wasn't at the Riviera on Monday to test the mood of magician Scarlett and her cast. Bobby Slayton and Rich Natole, both at the Tropicana, were one-man operations. But the "Ignite" cast was united by a supreme confidence in their leader, Antonio Restivo.

P.R. efforts low-key even as opening of CityCenter nears.
BY: Liz Benston/Las Vegas Sun

In normal times, a casino company within months of opening a major resort would use every opportunity to tout its virtues.

But until recently, MGM Mirage has been distracted by a steady grind of negative news surrounding CityCenter, its $8.5 billion complex that opens in December.

CityCenter was announced in 2004 with pitched excitement, the most ambitious commercial project in the country, a head-turning vision with six high rises and 7,000 rooms. But in time, various factors created a negative buzz.

‘Mental’ at O’Sheas may not amaze, but will at least amuse you.
BY: Joe Brown/Las Vegas Sun

“Mental,” a new mind-reading show at O’Sheas, invokes a Las Vegas oxymoron: “Mind” and “reading” don’t really go together in this town. “Mind” is something most people come here to lose, or at least get away from for a few days. And “reading,” since it’s done privately and is so dang hard to monetize, well, it’s not something we talk about much around here.

Anyway, Luke Jermay has come to Vegas from London’s West End and the tough crowds of Scotland’s Edinburgh Festival, where he made a reputation as a mind-gamer. His mission: To find out if anything remains of our over-served, hyper-stimulated minds to read.

Jermay’s act joins the flashier, fleshier “Freaks” in the upstairs showroom at the eternal frathouse that is O’Sheas, and it’s part of hypnotist/producer Anthony Cool’s ingenious strategy of booking unusual low-overhead shows with high word-of-mouth potential.

Rumors by Robin Leach/Las Vegas Sun

Barry Manilow
Rumors of Barry Manilow departing from the Las Vegas Hilton aren’t new to Vegas DeLuxe readers. When I talked with the singer-songwriter on May 20, Barry said that he didn’t know if his expiring contract at the Hilton would be renewed, but he did say that if terms couldn’t be agreed on, he wanted to stay on in Las Vegas. (Click HERE for that exclusive interview with Barry.)

That’s why there also are rumors now that he’ll move onto the Strip, possibly to the currently little-used Theatre des Arts at the Paris Las Vegas.

He told me: “I certainly don’t want to retire. I love Vegas, and I don’t want to go anywhere else. Retirement is a dirty word, and I’ve got much more to give and do.”

Barry, who celebrated his 66th birthday in early June, has recorded 42 albums, with sales approaching 100 million worldwide and two new albums already recorded for release. As this story develops over the next couple of weeks, we’ll keep a close eye on his possible jump to a new showroom.

Wayne Brady

Incidentally, there’s been a lot of confusion about comedian Wayne Brady trying to hold down two shows at once in competing Strip resorts: his new Let’s Make a Deal at the Tropicana and his long-running Making It Up at The Venetian.

So after I’d questioned the grueling schedule and asked if rumors were true that he would give up one or the other, here’s the statement from his representative:

“Due to vocal strains, Wayne Brady has decided to postpone his show Making It Up for all of October at The Venetian to give his singing voice a rest. He will continue to shoot Let’s Make a Deal at the Tropicana, but will return to The Venetian in November where his show will continue through September 2010.”

Las Vegas Top Ten Values from The Las Vegas Advisor. October 2009.

1. Room Rates – Golden Gate et al. – - $19 and up
Low room rates remain at the top of the Top Ten, as prices continue to be discounted at least 20% (official numbers) from 2008, when they were already down from 2007. And it doesn’t look like things will change anytime soon. CityCenter’s 6,300 new rooms are now just a couple months away, with 500 more in the Golden Nugget’s new tower not far behind. It’s a simple supply-and-demand result that’s a bummer for the casinos, but a big money-saver for the consumer.

2. Steak Dinner – Ellis Island – 24 hours – $6.95
The complete steak dinner at Ellis Island is the best-value meal deal in a city full of good-value meal deals. It’s a 10-ounce filet-cut sirloin, which comes with salad, garlic green beans, choice of potato, and fresh microbrewed beer, all for $6.95.

3. Buffet – M Resort – Daily – $8.95-$25.95
Rarely have we named a best buffet in the past that hasn’t garnered at least some negative feedback. But other than minor complaints about the traffic pattern, the M Resort’s Studio B Buffet, so far, is virtually blemish free. It’s that good!

4. Dollar Days – Sahara – Daily – $1
Dollar Days continues at the Sahara: dollar beer, shots (with souvenir glass), hot dogs, and blackjack, all in the rear of the casino near the NASCAR Café.

5. Shrimp Cocktail – Golden Gate – 11 am-2 pm – 99¢
A tiny tweak in the Golden Gate’s deal for getting the 99¢ price for the shrimp cocktail incurs a drop in placement to #6. Previously, you got the dollar discount simply by showing a GG players card. But now you must earn a minimum of one point on the card to get the deal. What does that mean? Not much. It’s a one-time requirement and $1 earns 1 point, so all you have to do is play a dollar in any machine with your card inserted and you’re good for life (or until the deal changes again). It’s a mathematical change akin to a $1.95 special being raised to $1.99.

6. Prime Rib – South Point – 24 hours – $12.95
The prime rib deal at South Point is a stunner. It's advertised as 10 ounces, but that’s underestimating it by about half. Plus, it’s served 24 hours a day in the coffee shop, with your choice of soup or salad, potato, and rolls if you ask. If you have a hankerin' for a prime rib special, it's worth the trip down to South Point.

7. Lunch Comp – Crown & Anchor – Daily – $20 Buy-in
Rooms might be priced at rock bottom, but games and comps seem to be tightening. Bucking the trend is the long-time lunch comp at the Crown & Anchor pubs. The free lunch with a $20 video poker buy-in, available 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., is still going strong. Plus, if you miss lunch, the $20 buy-in entitles you to a free appetizer (including the great chicken fingers) from 3 p.m. to midnight. And all the while, you’re also drinking comped premium draft beers from around the world. It’s ironic that the best comp in Comp City is now available outside the casinos (locations are at 1350 E. Tropicana and 4775 Spring Mountain).

8. Steak & Eggs – Arizona Charlie's Decatur – Daily – $3.99
The Arizona Charlie’s Decatur steak-and-eggs breakfast special returns to the list this month. The meal deal is served 24/7 and costs $3.99, but you have to show a player’s club card to get that price (four people can get the deal on one card). You can also get the steak (or ham) and eggs at Arizona Charlie’s Boulder for $3.29, but it’s a bit more difficult to travel there and the coffee shop isn’t open around the clock.

9. Beer – Casino Royale – Daily – $1
The $1 beer special at Casino Royale is back. You can find a lot of dollar beer deals around town, but Casino Royale serves bottled Michelob around the clock right in the heart of center Strip. Or you can opt for $1 margaritas (traditional or strawberry served in 12-ounce plastic glasses).

10. MNF Parties – Sam's Town Suncoast – Mondays – Free
It’s the time of year for Monday Night Football mania, with multiple dozens of parties all over town. There are some excellent options this year, but we’ve always been partial to free-dog-and-beer fetes. This year two casinos — Sam’s Town and Suncoast — are offering that deal, so they get our nod. Doors open at both an hour before game time, and while you need to show the casino’s slot card at Sam’s Town, you only have to show up to get the goodies at Suncoast.

Wayne's World: October 2009 by Wayne Bernath.

Hotel 32 at the Monte Carlo offers the most high-tech suites that I’ve
ever toured. The very top floor is where the high-rollers will be coveting to
stay. The Monte Carlo has completely recovered from the fire and the top
floors are open to the public and high-rollers. The opulence is beyond
luxury. The penthouses can also come in different configurations for those
who have many in their party. The service-oriented Hotel 32 just shows
how a first-class hotel can bounce back from a disaster.

For the best secret hideaway gourmet room with reasonable prices try
the Pahrump Valley Winery only 55 minutes west of The Strip in the
Symphony Restaurant open Wednesday thru Sunday evenings. The
first-class restaurant offers up a glass of wine, lobster and filet mignon,
soup or salad plus dessert for only $39.95.

There are enough shows in Las Vegas to make your head spin when trying
to decide upon one to see. “Lance Burton: Master Magician” at the
Monte Carlo is a sure fire best bet. Here’s what the stars say: Wayne Brady
says, “Lance Burton is one of the greatest magicians working in the world
today.” Nicholas Cage says, “I loved the show and Lance is great.” John Walsh
says, “Lance Burton’s magic show is nothing short of spectacular.” Dana
Carvey says, “He’s brilliant, he’s amazing.” Carl Reiner says, “Lance Burton
is the best working magician in the world today.” Siegfreid & Roy say, “He is
great for the art of magic because he brings his own touch of class to the
stage.” Keith Olbermann calls Lance Burton “The Johnny Appleseed of
magic.” Lance Burton took up a collection the week leading up to Labor Day
with his audiences who donated on their way out of the theatre doors at the
Monte Carlo. The audience members generously donated over $2,500 for the
MD telethon. He speaks with ABC affiliate Channel 13 anchors Nina
Radetich and Brian Schofield along with Murray a comedy magician. Lance
Burton told the newscasters how the illness has struck extended members of
his family. Next year he would like to see every show on The Las Vegas Strip
follow his lead to show Las Vegas cares.

Beginning Monday, Oct. 12 for the first time ever there will be a show
after Lance Burton’s spectacular magic extravaganza. On Mondays,
Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 9:30 p.m. a family friendly
comedian-impressionist Frank Caliendo will take to the stage with
impressions of the likes of John Madden, Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro,
Dr. Phil McGraw, Robin Williams, Donald Trump, William Shatner and
former Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton. Show tickets run from
$59-$95. Caliendo is best known for his work on FOX’s MADtv. His
signature John Madden impression is frequently seen on FOX NFL and
Mohr Sports. You may have seen him on “Comedy Central Presents.” For
tickets or further information call 730-7160.

October is a wonderful month in Las Vegas. It brings a cooling off spell,
the pools are closed and the big business of conventions is upon us which
are especially good for the taxicab drivers. Speaking of spells Halloween
falls on a Saturday in ’09.

“Frank Marino’s Divas Las Vegas” showcased with eight shows over
the Labor Day Weekend at the Imperial Palace was a complete sell-out and
a big hit for that genre. The characters include the star Frank Marino as
Joan Rivers with his quick wit and funny monologue along with boy
impersonators of Bette Midler, Liza, Dolly Parton, Wynonna, Britney,
Donna Summers, Celine, Beyonce and Cher. I’m rating this show an A+
and let’s hope Harrah’s Entertainment gives him a showroom.

Woo! Yard House at Town Square is good to the tummy but more
famous for carrying the largest selection of draft beer in Las Vegas with
125 types of brew. Good advice is to order by the pint in a glass as their
half-yard 32-ounce beers will set you back more than the meal at $13 while
a mug of draft beer is $4.25. Nice wide range menu, serves many moods.
The pizza is outstanding especially the BBQ chicken. There’s classic rock
in the background which is a plus because it creates a mood and isn’t too
loud. It’s always nice to sit out on the patio as I dislike dark restaurants. The
service is good and on a Labor Day Weekend it was packed but we didn’t
have to wait. My wife had the turkey burger but claims hers are better.
She’s probably right!

The performers drum with their hands at Margaritaville in the
Flamingo Hilton which brought back memories of Don the Beachomber’s
in the Sahara of the ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s. It’s action-packed with the
flavour of the South Seas but the food is Mexican and American. I enjoyed
steak Fajitas. The food is great and the wait staff is fast and efficient. You
can be in and out of there in an hour for dinner and they serve lunch and
dinner all day long. The décor is interesting when they turn large boats into
dining room seating. For being on The Las Vegas Strip they don’t strip you
of what’s in your wallet either. You can get a dinner for $10-$15. As most
of us know these theme restaurants make their money on how much booze
they serve and it’s a lot.

After Dark at Madame Tussauds

Guided by a single light, your eyes struggle to adjust and your heart races as you begin your journey through the eerie blackness.  Will you make it through? This Halloween season, we'll take you where you've always been afraid to go and show you that it is not all glamour and celebrities at Madame Tussauds After Dark.

What dark secrets lurk in the depths of the world-famous wax museum? Our history tells of a dark side that few care to revisit. During the French Revolution, Madame Tussaud was forced to dig through piles of executed noble's bodies, creating death masks of famous victims and collecting gruesome artifacts for her travelling Chamber of Horrors like the guillotine blade that beheaded Marie Antoinette.

Do you believe the stories of restless spirits, some tormented and others playful?  Do you fear being trapped overnight? You won't want to miss your chance to find out what happens at night as we keep our doors open late this haunting season. This Halloween, we'll take you where you've always been afraid to go and show you that it's not all glamour and celebrities.

Your heart races as you prepare to begin your journey. Guided by a single light in the still of darkness, will you make it all the way? Is there life after dark? Will you survive Scream, our own Chamber of Horrors, Prepare yourself for a restless night after a tour that will keep you in constant fear. Whoever said you shouldn't be afraid of the dark…lied! Don't miss your chance to find out what happens at night as we keep our doors open this Halloween season. 15 nights only!

The lights go out Tuesdays through Saturdays at 10:00 p.m.; the last ticket through will be at 1:00 a.m.
October 13th through October 31st (dark on Sundays and Mondays).

All Admissions are $20 (no discounts apply as this is a special event outside of normal operating hours).

Graveyard Specials from Big Empire

We won't pretend to have a comprehensive list of graveyard deals. That's dang near impossible to keep up to date and keep complete. But, here are the best deals in town that we know about and that seem to be there for a while. Plus, we don't list the late night specials that actually aren't that special. Just the dirt cheapest ones are here.

Boulder Station - After 11 p.m. three bucks gets you a basic American breakfast, or a Denver omelet. Served with a smile, so we hear.

California – For under four bucks after 11 p.m. you can get chicken strips, a half-pound steak with fries or potato, and–what's this– a banana fritter? That's weird, and cool, too. Sort of like a roommate we used to have.

El Cortez - For under four bucks after 11 p.m. you get a standard breakfast. No banana fritter, just eggs, hash browns, toast and bacon or sausage.

Ellis Island – Steak, eggs and potatoes for under four bucks. We guess $4 must be the magic breaking point. Late night drunks won't travel for ameal that costs more.

Orleans – While Ellis Island has the Widowmaker, the Orleans simply offers the more modest Widow-enabler with their $2 biscuits and gravy. They also have a few other dishes for about $3-$4 like ham or steak and eggs. Heck, at these prices, why not get two? But only on weeknights after midnight.

Riviera – All you can eat pancakes for about $4. Really, how mmany pancakes can you eat? And aren't you already full of them from the pancake breakfast at the senior center? You know, the time you stole the silverware and made a scene when that 94-year-old man caught you? Don't worry, you're not the only one who did that.

Silverton – Biscuits, gravy and scrambled eggs for… about $4. Ask yourself, are those scrambled eggs worth the extra two bucks over the price at the Orleans?

South Point - Late at night, after the children are tied to the bed, sneak away with a loved one and treat yourself to the ultimate in romantic indulgence: a range of dirt-cheap graveyard specials, including steak and eggs for four bucks and other full breakfasts for a couple of bucks. Nothing says I love you more loudly or firmly. Well, except maybe a burp or fart.

Terrible's – As though the old photos of gas stations weren't reason enough to come out here late at night and while drunk. Now a full breakfast is only $4 late at night. One we call the Windowmaker, comes with four eggs. The sleepy, sad guy has only two, but adds a couple pancakes.

Tuscany – Man, we didn't even know this drowsy place stayed open until midnight. Apparently it does, and for five hours in the middle of the night you can get pancakes for a buck. Or biscuits and gravy for two. If you got more money than common sense, go ahead, splurge on the $4 steak and eggs.

Las Vegas Tipping Guide
BY: Rick Garman

The most important guideline about tipping is that in Vegas, just as in any other city, it is at your discretion. If the service you are receiving is not up to your standards, don't feel like you have to tip "just because." Having said that, most of the people who work in the service industry in Vegas (and anywhere else for that matter), depend upon your tips to help them get above what is often not a lot more than minimum wage. So if you can blow $20 on a slot machine without a care in the world, why not match that $20 in tips to someone you encounter who made your stay in Vegas more pleasant?

Here are a few guidelines for who to tip and how much, but remember, these are just guidelines. If you win big at the tables, nobody is going to complain if you are more generous with your gratuities.

Taxi Driver: 15-20% of the fare Valet Parking: $2-3 for check in, $2-5 for check out Bellman: $1-2 per bag (more for heavy luggage) Housekeeping: $3-5 per night (more for messy rooms) Waiter/Waitress: 15-20% (even if the drinks are free) Buffet Waiter/Waitress: $1-2 per diner Cocktail Server: $1 per drink, including non-alcoholic (even if it’s free) Bartender: $1 per drink (ditto) Showroom Maitre d': These are rare these days, but $10-20 for better seats Dealers: Varies – often $5 for big wins or great hands Hand Pay Jackpot: 5-10% of the winnings

Vegas4Visitors Weekly Awards BY Rick Garman

The Sky’s the Limit Award of the Week goes to Cloud Nine, the massive balloon now parked across from Mandalay Bay that will offer rides starting October 5. The balloon is the world’s largest (what else?) at over eleven stories high and can hold up to 30 passengers. For $22.50 you get a 10 minute float at about 500 feet above The Strip. For info and tickets call 800-585-8688.

The I've Got a Right To Sing The Blues Award of the Week goes to The Mirage, which will open an outlet of the BB King Blues club in early 2010. The new venue will feature a restaurant serving Creole and southern cooking plus several bars (including one outdoors), a retail store, and a stage for intimate concerts and shows.

The Everything Must Go Award of the Week goes to the Fontainebleau, which may go into liquidation soon. Several of the lenders on the project who had been supporting an orderly bankruptcy are now asking for all assets to be sold and quickly. A decision should be made by the bankruptcy judge in the next few weeks.

The Intriguing Idea of the Week Award goes to Las Vegas Rocks Café, a new restaurant going into the nearly dead Neonopolis entertainment and shopping complex along Fremont Street in Downtown. The new restaurant will have a Vegas theme, celebrating its history and offering up cheeky menu items like the “topless dancer,” an open-face turkey breast sandwich. The restaurant is scheduled to open in late December, 2009.

Chuck Rounds' Las Vegas Entertainment News
October: 2009

I have friends that say, "October is the 'funnest' month of the year," and though I may not fully understand why they feel this way, I can appreciate so much about this time of year.  Spring and fall are my favorite times of the year.  The weather is perfect, and one gets filled with a sense of renewal.  The summers get long in Vegas…you just get tired of the heat all the time, and this summer seems to have lasted longer than most.  The energy is just sapped out of your body every time you walk out of doors.  So when the fall comes, it is exceedingly uplifting.  In Las Vegas, fall usually also means big business.  It is time for the busy convention season to begin, and the football season is under way, hockey is getting started, too.  Casinos are usually very busy this time of year, and the economy usually booms…however, this is an interesting year because of the economic collapse of our country…but it’s bad all over the country, and when times are tough, a lot of people decide that a Vegas trip just isn’t in their best interest.  This town has suffered, and there have been a lot of layoffs and unemployment in Las Vegas is some of the highest in the country.  October could be a month of salvation for this city…or we could continue our slow slogging path to some sort of recovery.  We have some great high points in the month; Football parties, Festivals, and of course, Halloween is always a big celebration.  This year, Halloween is on a Saturday—which can only mean bigger and better things.  There have been some big changes in the shows recently…sadly, several shows having to close.

A lot of the intrigue surrounds a legend’s return to the stage…Wayne Newton is starting a new show, "Once Before I Go – Celebrating 50 Years on the Strip," on October 14th at the Tropicana.  Lately, the Tropicana has been replete with shows—8 to be exact, and in order to avoid diluting the ticket sales for Mr. Las Vegas, it has been reported that the hotel has asked several of the shows to leave.  Now the actual fate of these shows is still unconfirmed, but the list includes: Bobby Slayton (who was said to be closing, but still has tickets on sale,) Rich Natole, The Fab, Hypnosis Unleashed, and The Soprano’s Last Supper.  It will both be interesting to see who really leaves and who really stays.  It will also be interesting to see Wayne Newton back on the Strip.  Newton has a great personality and tremendous charisma, but hasn’t really had a voice in years… I hope that he does more emceeing and less singing.

The new owners of the Greek Isles decided that they wanted to go in a different direction with their showroom and gave "Ignite" a two-week notice.  "Ignite" had been making great strides to build its audiences, so it is a shame to see it close.  Hopefully, it will be picked up by another venue.

The reinvention of Scarlett into a sexy late night magician failed at the Riviera.  Everyone saw this one coming, and it really was only a matter of time.  I think that I had mid-September in the poll.

"Voices" is now really "Voice."  Earl Turner left the show to fulfill some cruise ship bookings and never came back…  Lani Misalucha will continue with the show either as a solo artist or fill the second spot with guest singers.

"Divas Las Vegas," the new Frank Marino show was just picked up by the Imperial Palace.  It should make a great addition to their line-up.  The producer at the Riviera should have never let this one go…

"The Platters, Cornell Gunter's Coasters & The Marvelettes" will be moving from the Sahara's Congo Room and into the Steve Wyrick Theatre.  The move occurs in the middle of the month, and the show will close at the Sahara one night and open the next at the new venue.  This show is as much entertaining as it is a musical journey into the seminal times of American Pop Music and Rock and Roll.

"Mario Barth's Biggest Tattoo Show on Earth" will be at Mandalay Bay. The 2009 Tattoo Expo promises to be even better than the previous years. The Biggest Tattoo Show on Earth enjoys a preeminent reputation as the ultimate and most powerful educational forum on every level-including tattooing, body piercing, body modification, jewelry manufacturing, reconstructive tattooing, permanent cosmetics, laser removal, the newest fashion trends and many more. It is cutting edge, fun, exciting, transforming, and it continues to grow.

In A BRONX TALE, the celebrated play on which he based the legendary movie, Chazz Palminteri vividly depicts a young boy's rough childhood in the 1960s-era Bronx and the unforgettable people he encountered. A classic coming-of-age story about reaching your true potential and trusting your heart, A BRONX TALE is directed by four-time Tony Award-winner Jerry Zaks.  It will have a limited run at the Venetian showroom.

The Fourth Annual Pure Aloha Fall Festival will be presented by Vizzun Entertainment at the Silverton Casino.  The three-day festival runs Friday, October 9 through Sunday, October 11. The event includes concerts from popular Hawaiian and Polynesian acts and daytime festivals that bring a little bit of the Hawaiian homeland to Las Vegas.

Stagecoach Depot’s haunted corn maze will open in Glendale on October 9th.   Nevada's largest Halloween festivity runs from Friday, Oct. 9th to Halloween night on the 31st.  The night ends with a barbeque and entertainment.  The admission price is $10 for general admission and children under the age of 6 are free. Bring a can of food to donate to the poor and receive a dollar off admission prices.  It’s a 35-minute drive north of North Las Vegas off of I-15. There is plenty of parking.

Madame Tussauds has their own Halloween treat… This Halloween season, they'll take you where you've always been afraid to go and show you that it is not all glamour and celebrities at Madame Tussauds After Dark. Don't miss your chance to find out what happens at night as we keep our doors open this Halloween season. 15 nights only!

For the 16th year, a medieval kingdom will take over Sunset Park with lavishly costumed knights, knaves, fine ladies and wenches as CBS Radio, Miller Lite and Clark County Parks and Recreation present the annual Age of Chivalry Renaissance Festival, Oct. 9-11.

Several stages will feature entertainment with costumed performers presenting more than 50 shows per day along with historical re-enactments, jousting tournaments, medieval pageantry and more than 100 artisans – including blacksmiths, stained glass designers, jewelers, wood workers, toy makers, perfume blenders, stone carvers and sword, dagger and armor craftsman — to demonstrate and sell their wares. Authentic food, from fish and chips to an English feast, also will be available as well as beer and ales for adults with proper identification.  Concerts all weekend will feature local acts with nationally known acts as well as a royal parade with kings, queens, warriors and peasants, takes place on Saturday and Sunday. The festival offers full-contact jousting tournaments; no-holds-barred gladiator battles; black powder demonstrations, strolling minstrels, contortionists, magicians, storytellers, jokers, jugglers, flame eaters, belly dancers, trained parrots and pirates. Additional attractions include rides, bow and arrow and axe target games, medieval barber and surgeon demonstrations and Renaissance guilds.

Southern Nevada Pug Rescue (SNPR), a non-profit organization, will host its seventh annual Pug-O-Rama Picnic on Sunday, October 17, from 11 a.m.- 3 p.m. at the Silver Springs recreation center amphitheatre. The Halloween-themed event will continue to feature costume contests, prizes, raffles, and a silent auction.  Pug owners are encouraged to dress up their Pugs, pack a picnic, and enjoy a few hours socializing with other Pug parents. Pug-O-Rama Picnic tickets are available now for $10 per person, $7 for children 6-12 and children 5 and under are free. Check or money order should be made to SNPR and sent to P.O. Box 20875, Las Vegas, NV 89112, along with your name, number of guests and contact number. Tickets will be sold at the door for $15.  Pug-O-Rama helps SNPR to raise funds for spay, neuter, shots, exams, and other medical necessities that take place when a rescue Pug is brought into the organization. This year the annual Las Vegas Houdini séance will again be held in the THEATER OF MAGIC at the Royal Resort hosted by Dixie Dooley, located at 99 Convention Center Drive (between the Encore and the Riviera). Fright Dome takes over The Adventuredome at Circus Circus beginning October 3rd.  This season of fright, not even the sky is safe.  Drop Demons are the latest addition to the already horrifying experience known as Fright Dome, ranked 4th Scariest Haunted Attraction in the country by AOL.  Multiple Drop Demons will unexpectedly fall from the sky and torment passers by.  Dressed in professionally designed costumes and intricate masks as they descend from the ceiling, these flights of horror will induce blood-curdling screams from all that they encounter.  In addition to the Drop Demons, Fright Dome also will add new attractions such as a terror-filled Wax Museum, a haunted 4D Special FX Theater and the haunted house, Killer Clowns in 3D.   Fright Dome will offer five enhanced haunted houses, including all new Cell Block 13, Chainsaw Massacre, Morgue of Misery, Cavern of The Living Dead and the brand new Killer Clowns in 3D. Three spine tingling ride films, four extreme scare zones plus rides and attractions.  Pitch black and fog filled, Fright Dome will set a chilling atmosphere with the dramatic Drop Demons, roaming scare monsters, high-powered strobes, multi-colored lasers and eerie sound effects.

Halloween is always an interesting day in Las Vegas.  Most available venues will host some sort of costumed ball—usually having to do with some sort of sexual content, and the more outrageous the better.  There are a couple of Fetish and Fantasy balls, several Erotic balls, and the Pimp an’ Ho ball, of course. It’s a strange night and not one for the timid.  It will continue to be a huge party weekend in Las Vegas.  Vegas continues to prove that there might not be a better city in which to celebrate Hallow’s Eve.  Of course, one sure highlight will be the 43rd annual Beaux Arts Ball, a huge costume bash which will help raise money for the Golden Rainbow Foundation. Studio 54 always goes above and beyond on Halloween with a whole week of parties…be sure not to miss this year! After all, it is Halloween in Las Vegas…

Freakling Bros. was voted Las Vegas' scariest haunted attractions in 2008.  By concentrating on primal fears, relying on the power of live performers, and employing the art of theatrical illusion, Freakling Brothers will once again frighten yet delight thousands of Las Vegas' bravest thrill seekers!  This October, in its 18th season, Freakling Bros., creators of Las Vegas' premiere haunted attractions, will retire one of its most popular creations – The Mortuary. After 10 years it will be laid to rest … paving the way for an all new attraction in 2010. Pay your final respects … don't miss it! To honor this occasion, Freakling Bros. will present 3 of the most terrifying haunted attractions imaginable!
