Announcing Wayne Newton "Once Before I Go" at Tropicana Las Vegas.
His name has long been synonymous with the city he calls home, and now Wayne Newton – Mr. Las Vegas – will celebrate his 50th year of entertaining audiences on The Strip with an all-new, limited engagement production, Once Before I Go, at Tropicana Las Vegas beginning October 14. Tickets to this once-in-a-lifetime production will go on sale beginning September 23.
A celebration of 50 storied years as told by the man who shaped them, Once Before I Go is a rare opportunity to experience an iconic career through the entertainer’s own lens. No other performer has seen 50 years from center stage in the ever-changing city of Las Vegas and it’s likely none other ever will.
Once Before I Go is an intimate journey through a life spent on stage. From a shy 15-year-old just off the bus, to his place as one of America’s most celebrated entertainment icons, Once Before I Go is the story of Wayne Newton told by the man who is living it.
Having performed live to more than 40 million people, Newton has epitomized the talent, glamour and energy that is Las Vegas. From the tale behind his signature tuxedo to his storied history with Elvis, the Rat Pack and many others, Once Before I Go is his unique life story, 50 years in the making.
“Being the new kid on the block back in 1959, it is both exciting and artistically challenging that in 2009 I am able to do the kind of show I’ve always wanted to do here in my home town that I love,” said Newton. “It is the icing on the cake to bring this show to Tropicana Las Vegas at the request of my dear friend, Alex Yemenidjian.”
Once Before I Go will feature Newton with an exhilarating full orchestra, photos and video, the latest in theater technology and lots of surprises. It is only fitting that this never before seen show celebrating the man who has been such an integral part of the rich history of Las Vegas will come alive in the equally iconic Tropicana Las Vegas, one of the first resorts to make The Strip an international sensation.
“We are thrilled that the one and only Mr. Las Vegas, Wayne Newton, has chosen Tropicana Las Vegas as the venue for the most important celebration of his career,” said Tropicana Chairman and CEO Alex Yemenidjian.
Once Before I Go will be performed Tuesday – Saturday at 8:30 pm in the Tiffany Theatre at Tropicana Las Vegas. Schedule is subject to change without notice. Tickets are priced at $79.99, $99.99 and the exclusive VIP Package for $149.99 plus tax and surcharge. The VIP Package includes a golden circle seat, a meet & greet with Wayne Newton and the opportunity to have a photo taken with the one and only Mr. Las Vegas.
Tickets for Once Before I Go can be purchased by calling the Tropicana Box Office at 702-739-2411 / 800-829-9034 or online at www.Tropicanalv.com.
Lion King Las Vegas/Truly A Spectacular Event:
BY: Denise Alamas/www.accessvegas.com
Lumbering down the aisles towards the stage, life-size puppets of elephants and rhinoceroses gather with giraffes and gazelles to greet Simba, the future Lion King of Pride Rock. With the renewal of life, the jungle is alive with hope as King Mufasa’s son is presented to the animals.
“The Lion King” is truly a unique addition to Las Vegas. By bringing this award winning show to a town that is not always “kid friendly,” Disney has given visitors and locals alike an opportunity for a truly unforgettable night with the entire family. It is also an excellent choice for a romantic night out.
As the story progresses, we see young Simba fall into trouble as his evil Uncle, Scar, would like to be king. Scar readily admits that he is no physical match to Simba’s father, Mufasa; however, he insists that he got the brains in the family and should be the rightful king. Unfortunately for Scar, Simba’s birth meant that he would never have the opportunity. So, Scar leads the playful young Simba into danger. While Simba is rescued by his father from a stampede, Mufasa is not so lucky. After convincing the young lion that his father’s death is his fault, Scar urges Simba to run away.
Predictably, Scar becomes king and Pride Rock begins to fall apart. In the midst of this darkness, Simba’s wanderings with some new friends allow him to forget his troubles, as well as lose himself, for a while. As Simba grew, he became restless and tired of wandering. When his childhood friend Nala, the lioness to whom he was betrothed, finds him and reminds him of who he is, Simba begins to find what he lost – himself.
Like all coming of age stories, there is a moment in which a child becomes an adult and is ready to take his place in the world. After much reflection, Simba returns to Pride Rock, confronts his past, and reclaims his thrown.
Though most people are familiar with Disney’s “The Lion King,” the stage version is both breathtaking and wondrous. This simple coming of age story is transformed into a spectacular event through vibrant costumes, puppetry, dancing, and music. The blending of African rhythms with music created by Elton John and Tim Rice makes this production truly fabulous.
This show is definitely suitable for all ages and, most remarkably, this production does an excellent job of conveying themes such as life and death, as well as good versus evil, without scaring the children. Instead, younger children will be amazed at the elephants walking down the aisle next to them and delighted by the music and dancing. As my four-year-old daughter commented with delight, “The Lion King is wonderful!” I could not agree more.

Steve's Las Vegas Quickies:
The Sahara Hotel & Casino and master illusionist Rick Thomas have announced new show times for “The Magic & Tigers of Rick Thomas” production effective immediately. Due to popular demand and schedule changes, the show will now be seen daily at 7 p.m. inside the Theater at the famed property. There will no longer be a 4 p.m. performance on Saturday and Sunday.
The Las Vegas skyline is about to change as the new, giant Cloud 9 balloon is tethered up opposite Mandalay Bay. Vegas should be able to claim another record as having the world’s largest helium balloon! There are similar but smaller ones in Paris, Dubai and Hong Kong. Starting Oct. 5, the behemoth balloon will carry 30 passengers in a gondola basket 500 feet above the Strip on 10-minute flights day and night!
The balloon is so massive at 11 stories high and 7 stories wide that it will be seen as far as halfway to Primm! The European-style balloon was originally commissioned for the America’s Cup in Valencia, Spain. It’ll make for perfect wedding experiences high above the Strip as the newest tourist attraction.
The buzz about MGM’s CityCenter opening in December intensifies on an almost daily basis. Seven of the complex’s master architects and 12 of its contemporary art stars have joined forces for an extraordinary showcase now the Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art. Think of it as an advance look at their work, which will revolutionize the Las Vegas landscape when CityCenter opens shortly before Christmas.
The display features work by Maya Lin, Jenny Holzer, Antony Gormley, Tony Cragg, Nancy Rubins, Peter Wegner and Richard Long, along with the early sketches and architectural models of CityCenter by architects Pelli Clarke Pelli, Helmut Jahn, Studio Daniel Libeskind, Rafael Vinoly, Kohn Pedersen Fox, Foster + Partners and the Rockwell Group. The Artists and Architects of CityCenter exhibit will remain on view through April 4.
In a move that is a surprise to anyone except those close to the production, Erich Bergen has quietly left "Jersey Boys," the Frankie Valli and the Four Season production at the Palazzo. Bergen was publicly active in his role as Bob Gaudio as recently as Sept. 9, when the cast appeared on "America's Got Talent," but word from those familiar with the show is that his departure was long anticipated. It was first made public today on a Twitter update by KVBC Channel 3 entertainment reporter Alicia Jacobs.
More classic neon signs from Las Vegas' past are being installed along a stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard near Downtown. The signs, ranging from the Silver Slipper to an old Binion's Horseshoe sign, are being restored and added to medians from Washington Avenue to Sahara Avenue. It's all part of a $1 million project designed to spruce up the street and the signs are being provided by the Neon Museum. There will be three installed to begin with and organizers hope to have more than a dozen by the time the project ends.
Veteran rockers the Steve Miller Band hit The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel on Oct. 24. Tickets start at $49.50.
At the Greek Isles, scary-looking fire guy Antonio Restivo says his "Ignite" revue will close Tuesday. He was given notice a new promoter will book titles for the little casino that changed hands last month after a foreclosure. Italian magician Antonio Casanova already slipped in last weekend, with an Interstate 15 billboard but nary a listings notice for our Neon showguide.
At the Las Vegas Hilton, advertising for "Voices" in the Shimmer Showroom has removed mention of Earl Turner; the show is now fully in the hands of co-star Lani Misalucha. Turner was to return this week after a cruise-ship booking. But after deliberating issues he didn't want to make public, co-producer Angelo Giordano says "a tough decision" was made to not have him back.
"The Guy Fieri Roadshow" comes to the House of Blues on Dec. 19. Tickets are $31 and already are on sale at the venue box office and Ticketmaster outlets.
Twitter and email emergencies went into overdrive yesterday with reports that Mindfreak magician Criss Angel had been taken ill and canceled his Cirque du Soleil Believe shows at the Luxor. There was such a volume of alarms and concerns within a 60-minute window that I had to jump into action!
So it’s now great to safely report that Criss is healthy and well, and no Believe shows have been canceled. In fact, Criss was happily debating ketchup or mustard on his hamburger lunch at Iron Chef winner Kerry Simon’s restaurant Simon in Palms Place.
Throughout the pro football season, Fitzgeralds poker players receive one selection card to choose the winners in that week's games (based on actual score). Those choosing the most winners will split a prize pool up to $3,000 every week.
Starlet Holly Madison has extended her run as "Bo Peep" in the striptease spectacular "PEEPSHOW" at Planet Hollywood for a year until September 2010.
Madame Tussauds at the Venetian is celebrating its 10th anniversary. The famed attraction, an offspring of the 200 year-old Madame Tussauds London, was one of the first locations outside of England. More than 100 world-famous figures, each costing an average of $300,000 to create, are featured at the attraction at one time, in various themed areas.
Casino Gaming, LLC debuted its newest game COLORS at The Orleans, which is a new betting option for Roulette, allowing players to bet that either red or black will hit three consecutive times in a row. The player is paid 8 to 1. The Orleans is the first casino in Las Vegas to feature the multi-spin Roulette option.
Cher is back at the Coliseums through Oct 11, then takes a break and will be back again through December. Once again, she is sell-out. Her new Bob Mackie costumes are, as usual, fantastic.
There was drama at the Luxor last week when Paige O'Hara, one of the stars of Menopause the Musical, injured herself and the understudy couldn't go on. Fortunately, a standby understudy from Reno came in at the last minute and did an incredible job. As we all know, the show must go on!
Mariah Carey was a smash at Pearl at the Palms. Can a residency be in the works? Let's hope so. Hubby Nick Cannon was busy as emcee for the finals of America's Got Talent and seems to be getting better at it. Wasn't he a rap artist? I could be wrong.
The Las Vegas Hilton's Race and Sportsbook was named The Best Book by The Las Vegas Advisor's readers. The votes were cast by The PUBLIC and by The PROS and The LVH won in both catagories. Great job, Jay.

The Gold Spike Coffee Shop has a $4.99 Prime Rib Special from 4-11pm daily.
Esquire magazine surveyed a bunch of Las Vegas celebrity chefs and asked them what their favorite fast food restaurant was. In and Out Burger won hands down.
The Sahara has reopened The House Of Lords Steakhouse.
The Nevada Supreme Court today upheld the constitutionality of civil enforcement of Nevada's indoor smoking ban. A number of Las Vegas businesses had appealed, on the grounds that the law violates equal protection guarantees because it exempts gambling areas in large casinos, plus stand-alone taverns, and gentlemen's clubs.
Wolfgang Puck's Bar & Grill at the MGM Grand has just introduced a new late-night menu. Served from 11 p.m.-6 a.m. daily, the new menu features small bites including Puck's famed Truffled Potato Chips with Maytag blue cheese; Garlic-Chili Chicken Wings; signature pizzas from the wood-burning oven; burgers, paninis and sandwiches, classic breakfast favorites, and entrées.
Six guests at Main Street Station were treated for smoke inhalation today after a small fire broke out in a guest room. There was no one in the room when the fire was detected — it started in a waste basket and may have been caused by a cigarette. Staff were able to put it out with fire extinguishers and the damage was minimal (estimated at $1,000).
Hawaiian Tropic Zone's just launched Aloha Hour from 3 to 6 p.m. daily. The new happy hour features half off all appetizers, plus drink specials including $3 wells and $10 pitchers of Coors and Coors Light, all served up by their bikini-clad waitresses.
As part of the fruits of its $125 million property-wide renovation, Tropicana Las Vegas today announced it's to open two new restaurants: Havana Go Go Cafe is a breakfast joint/cafe open daily at 7 a.m. Menu items include Cuban bread pizza, paninis, deli-style sandwiches, soups, salads, bagels, muffins and a range of specialty coffees and will debut shortly in the Island Tower soon. Bacio Pasta & Vino is an Italian bistro that debuted today and will be open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Tix4Tonight has opened its seventh Las Vegas outlet, located in the Casino Royale Casino and Hotel. To celebrate this event, which also coincides with the company's seventh anniversary, there will be a promotion, likely next month, with free tickets to top Las Vegas shows and dinner packages to popular Las Vegas restaurants up for grabs. Details have yet to be finalized but we'll keep you posted.
Terry Fator's Puppets Are Just The Begining.
BY; Nicole Acevedo/www.accessvegas.com
When you say “Art”, many will think of Van Gogh’s “Starry Night”, Michelangelo’s “Sistine Chapel”, or even The Golden Gate Bridge, but almost no one will ever think of ventriloquism. Except for maybe one man, 8 puppets, an auditorium full of people 5 nights a week on the Las Vegas Strip, and millions of American viewers who voted Terry Fator the winner of the 2007 America’s Got Talent show on NBC. Art is not only talent it is imaginative and fun, soulful and straight from the heart. It is exactly what Fator delivers night after night to an audience echoing shouts of laughter and cheer.
Fator immediately impresses the audience with an impersonation of the great Etta James singing “At Last”, by his puppet Emma. Following Emma came one of his most popular puppets, Winston The Impersonating Turtle. Winston undoubtedly wins audiences over with his humorous charm along with impersonations of Maroon 5 singing “This Love” and the Bee Gees singing “Stayin’ Alive”.
This is not an ordinary hand puppet show for the kids. Fator’s show is unique in his ability to accurately impersonate and sing with a wide vocal range of popular artists and hit songs using ventriloquism. His art is so polished that it is easy to forget that he is doing all the voices. There were long periods where I would find myself being so carried away by the chemistry between Fator and the puppets that I forgot the puppets were not real, like a child watching Sesame Street believing that the puppets are really talking and interacting with other people.
Soon after each puppet is introduced in the segment there is a sense that each one undoubtedly has its own unique personality, completely separate from Fator. Even though Fator is demonstrably handling the puppets himself and singing and talking for them, his transitions between voices are so smooth and his interaction with them so natural, that the whole performance seems effortless and “real”. One such puppet is Maynard Tompkins the Elvis Impersonator.
Others have personalities all their own. Maynard is shy in front of audiences and has a speech impediment so he tends to stutter. Another example is the heavy metal puppet, Dougie, with long hair, torn jeans and a black AC/DC shirt. Also known as “the annoying neighbor”, Dougie rocks audiences by singing Guns N’ Roses’ “Sweet Child O’ Mine”, but when Terry Fator tries to rock audiences with Z.Z. Top, Dougie falls asleep on Terry’s shoulder. Dougie gets the crowd going again with the whole audience singing along to “Sweet Home Alabama”.
Accompanied by an amazing live band playing many more hits than I was able to mention, Terry Fator has so many unique characters, each one charming and entertaining audience members with their humor and uncanny impersonations of classic hit songs. Even Fator himself does a hysterical impersonation of Michael Jackson followed by a side-splittingly funny dialogue and duet with Walter The Country Man. Don’t let the mere idea of a ventriloquism show fool you. This is more than ventriloquism, but an artful performance of humor, creativity, and fun. Fator is a one-man show of a multitude of voices and talents as he fills the night with non-stop laughter!

RICARDO¹S FIRST RESTAURANT IN NEVADA TO OFFER ³PAY AT THE TABLE TECHNOLOGY.
Ricardo’s Mexican Restaurant is the first restaurant in the state of Nevada to introduce “pay at the table” technology, allowing guests to pay their bill without their credit card or debit pin transaction information ever leaving the table.
The program was created as a means to eliminate identity theft by allowing the customer to keep their credit card at all times. Ricardo’s is the first restaurant in Nevada to partner with Ingenico, creators of the hand-held remote device that guests use at the table, and Micros, the point-of-sale computer system used in many restaurants. Alpine Payment Systems manages the processing.
“We’re excited to offer this to our guests and so far they have been thrilled with the new, safe technology,” said Ricardo’s owner Bob Ansara. “Our guests get to keep their credit card in their possession at all times, creating a safe transaction from start to finish.”
The system is currently in-use at Ricardo’s and will be available to all dine-in guests. For more information, visit www.RicardosofLasVegas.com.

Guess who's coming to dinner?
Las Vegas' hottest performers share top billing with the city's tastiest restaurants.
BY: Kiko Miyasato and Jach Houston/Las Vegas Magazine
What better way to pay tribute to the classic Las Vegas evening – dinner and a show – than to showcase some of the city's most scene-stealing performers at restaurants in the hotels in which they perform? That was our mission, and from magicians and showgirls to a ventriloquist and one "girl next door," it was carried off with aplomb. Behind the scenes, the performers are not unlike their onstage personas, full of life and larger than it at the same time. Sharing the spotlight with the performers were some delectable dishes, food that defied its menu description by far. Together, they form the foundation of modern Vegas – a hotbed of talent, both onstage and in the kitchen.
Peepshow star Holly Madison slices into the famed 16-ounce New York strip with a side of sumptuous black truffle creamed spinach at Strip House at Planet Hollywood Resort.
Dining at Kokomo's at The Mirage, Vikki "The Cougar" flirts with headliner Terry Fator over a plate of herbed chicken breast and a crispy rock shrimp cake as Elvis impersonator Maynard Thompkins munches on.
Yesi, Tracey and Jennifer of Luxor's Fantasy share some pints and signature small plates, including fried mashed potato sticks and pork spare ribs, at Company Kitchen and Pub House.
Penn & Teller joke around at the salad bar at Carnival World Buff et at Rio, where live-action cooking stations, cuisines from around the globe, a full bar and sumptuous dessert station await.

Siblings make new memories. BY Jack Houston
Las Vegas Magazine
They knew we were waiting for them; it just took 30 years for their busy schedules to coordinate. Jimmy Carter was in the White House the last time Donny and Marie Osmond played an extended engagement in Las Vegas, and judging by the packed showroom inside the Flamingo, their return was long overdue.
Bounding onstage to the Aretha Franklin- George Michael hit "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)," the siblings defy what you'd expect from a performance by forty- and fiftysomething former teen idols. Their rapport is fluid and playful, and their song selection is impeccable. Covers of Stevie Wonder, Patsy Cline and the Isley Brothers take precedence over the well-traversed hits of their youth, which are showcased in bite-size chunks.
When there's reminiscing to be done, it's through video clips: a pint-size Marie introduced on The Andy Williams Show as the "youngest Osmond brother," Donny's turn in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and, of course, Marie's Dancing With the Stars stint. Speaking of, not only can Marie dance, but she looks and sounds better than ever. Ditto for Donny, who unleashes an unlikely soulfulness on several numbers.
While he can't match Marie with his footwork (but he'll get his chance on the new season of Dancing), he gets points for trying, especially during a dance-off that leaves him dripping with sweat. Marie's out of breath, too, but she gets the last laugh in a showcase of two exemplary performers.

In big showroom, Zowie Bowie’s ‘Vintage Vegas’ needs to grow.
By John Katsilometes
Chris Phillips talks with great passion of this dream he’s had for years, his dream of a lifetime. He wavers on how long he’s had the dream. Sometimes it's 35 years. Sometimes it's 32. Sometimes it’s 40, from the moment he first heard “Elvis in person at the International Hotel” in 1969.
Whichever, it is the dream to keep alive the essence of Las Vegas, that maverick, coo-coo, Rat Pack-ian swagger on which the city’s entertainment reputation was forged.
In this dream, Phillips is half of the act billed as Zowie Bowie. He’s singing with a partner, the buxom and blustery Marley Taylor, so stacked she makes Jayne Mansfield look positively dowdy.
Setting up residency in his dream is a 16-piece orchestra conducted by trumpet player and pianist David Perrico (who sits in with the great Lon Bronson on Thursdays at Green Valley Ranch and is rehearsing for the Cirque/Elvis show to open at CityCenter in December) and featuring Bronson himself in the horn section. Famous friends stop by in this dream, played out onstage at Monte Carlo’s Lance Burton Theatre. There are a couple of the “Rat Pack Is Back” performers from the Plaza, up for a frenetic “Luck Be a Lady Tonight.” There’s Vince Neil of Motley Crue, decked out in a charcoal suit and soaring through “Fly Me to the Moon,” carefully steering the tune like an IndyCar driver suddenly plopped into a Bentley. There is even a famous canine, Alicia Jacobs’ Star, a doggie by now famous enough to require her own agent, who is invited onstage as Taylor chirps “Crush on You.”

Vegas4Visitors Weekly Awards
The Mmmmm, Hot Dogs Award of the Week goes to Pinks, the classic LA wiener stand that has opened its first Las Vegas location at Planet Hollywood. The Mmmmm, Hard Rocks Awards of the Week goes to the Hard Rock Café, which has opened a second location at the Showcase Mall, just north of the MGM Grand. This is a restaurant only – no casino.
The What's in a Name Award of the Week goes to MGM Mirage, which has reached a deal with no fewer than 10 different companies that could put its marquee brand names on hotels around the world. The company will manage the hotels but will not have to spend any money to build them. This strictly franchise deal is only good, for now, in other countries but could lead to non-gaming properties abroad with names like Bellagio and MGM Grand.
The Really? Award of the Week goes to Steve Wynn who is rumored to be putting in yet another nightclub at Encore Las Vegas. The new club will reportedly go along The Strip in the space between Switch restaurant and the high-limit club and should open next summer. Another nightclub? In a town that has a bazillion of them already? In a hotel that has three of them already? Really?
The Happy Birthday Award of the Week goes to The Mirage, which will turn 20 in October. To celebrate they are planning a huge rock concert at their Bare pool lounge featuring Slash, Tommy Lee, Courtney Love, Rob Zombie, and more.
The Saving History Award of the Week goes to The Clark County Museum, which recently rescued and will reopen the Candlelight Wedding Chapel on their grounds. The chapel opened in 1966 on The Strip and hosted weddings for Bette Midler, Whoopi Goldberg, and other luminaries. It was moved to the Clark County Museum in 2007, was restored, and will reopen in November.

Harrah's Eyeing Planet Hollywood? BY Rick Garman
While virtually every other casino company is pulling back and downsizing, Harrah's is making moves that will expand its reach as the biggest gaming corporation in the world. The big Vegas news is that the company has purchased a portion of the struggling Planet Hollywood Resort's debt, estimated to be over $860 million total. This could be a sign that Harrah's is aiming to take over the hotel/casino, which would give it an almost uninterrupted string of properties from Harrah's at the north all the way down to Planet Hollywood at the South, including Imperial Palace, Flamingo, Bill's, Bally's, and Paris Las Vegas.
Planet Hollywood has been fighting the same kinds of economic turbulence that has sent many other companies into bankruptcy. A couple of weeks ago it officially defaulted on part of its debt, a bad sign that spells trouble for the property. Without the deep pockets of a major company behind it that can better handle the debt that is piling up, the hotel has been at risk for just such a takeover.
Meanwhile, Harrah's is also moving into Ohio by purchasing the Thistledown Race Track in Cleveland. Why do they want a horse track you might be asking? Because a plan is afoot that would allow them to install slot machines at the track.
But Harrah's is not stopping there, instead going not only global but world wide, as in the web. The company has partnered with a London based online gaming company that will bring their Caesars and World Series of Pokers brand to the lucrative UK Internet gambling market. Many are seeing this as positioning for a possible change in the law that may make it legal for online casinos to operate in the United States.

Phantom Fans Show Off.
Convention attracts 'crazy' followers.
By COREY LEVITAN
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
Larry Tetewsky, 50, and his wife, Janice Mergenhagen, 62, made it to Phantom Fan Week in Las Vegas despite a cruel scheduling dilemma. This is also the weekend a pirate convention takes place aboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach, Calif.
"We cursed for a while," Tetewsky said.
The world's first "Phantom of the Opera" convention kicked off Thursday morning at The Venetian's Phantom Theatre, drawing superfans from around the globe to celebrate the long-running Andrew Lloyd Webber musical.
Continuing through Sunday, the convention includes Q&A sessions with cast members from "Phantom: The Las Vegas Spectacular" and demonstrations of costumes, makeup and the show's famous giant chandelier.

HEIDI'S PICKS: BY Heidi Knapp Rinella/LVRJ
MANTRA MASALA
8530 W. Warm Springs Road; 598-3663
Mantra Masala bills its food as healthy without making any specific claims of that nature but a clear avoidance of excess fat is an obvious good start. A plus is that unlike much "healthful" food, Indian cuisine — especially as executed by Mantra Masala — is inherently flavorful. We loved the sweet, sweet Mussels Masala and greatly enjoyed the simple vegetable samosas, garlic nan, lamb korma and chicken mantra. (11/7/08)
Overall: A- $$
PIERO'S ITALIAN CUISINE
355 Convention Center Drive; 369-2305
Piero's has many of the trappings of a conventionaire/tourist-centric restaurant– the location close to the convention center, the high prices, the multitude of tables for large parties– but much about it doesn't feel touristy, and that would include the quality of the food and service. We were extremely pleased with the roasted artichoke, Saltimbocca alla Romana, Fettucine A Modo Mido — fresh fettucine with broccoli, mushrooms and pancetta, to you and us — and a creamy, not overly sweet tiramisu infused with a striking coffee flavor. (9/11/09)
Overall: A $$$$
SIMON RESTAURANT & LOUNGE
Palms Place, 4381 W. Flamingo Road; 944-3292
There's a definite whimsical air about Simon Restaurant & Lounge — witness the cotton candy and Rice Krispie treats — but the kitchen knows when it's time to be serious, too. That's evidenced by the various surprises hidden in the menu, such as the shredded-apple and celery-leaf "slaw" with the Crispy Rock Shrimp and decidedly citrus notes of the braised shortribs. Also worthy of note: classic steak tartare and Grouper Casino, with the flavors (and clams) of the classic Clams Casino. (6/5/09)
Overall: A- $$$$
SUSHIWA
790 Coronado Center Drive, Henderson; 263-5785
What we think of as second-generation sushi places — those that borrow from other culinary traditions for innovative sushi that's particularly appealing to Americans — are extremely popular, which means they tend to be extremely crowded. Not so with Sushiwa, which hasn't been discovered. Yet. We loved the Henderson Roll, Banzai Roll, the whole-avocado Pocky Roll, a shrimp tempura roll — even a Korean barbecue sushi roll. (7/6/07)
Overall: A $$$

SHOW REVIEW: 'Sgt. Pepper Live'
'Sgt. Pepper Live' does justice to celebrated Beatles album.
BY: Mike Weatherford/LVRJ
Cheap Trick, whose entire career has been a form of Beatles tribute, anchors the collective effort at the Las Vegas Hilton through Sept. 23. The perennial rockers have pulled off this show in other cities, but on opening night they still seemed a bit rushed at times, looking like they were working hard not to look like they were working hard.
Maybe someone needed to send a tray of Cuervo shots backstage. With a couple extra for the six male singers who stood at attention next to the orchestra, and three for the guy who recorded the goofy voice-of-God narration, which actually introduces guest singer Ian Ball as being from the "critically acclaimed band" Gomez.
By the end of it, guitar Trick-ster Rick Nielsen wandered over to the sitar band to pull violinist Gingger Shankar into the "All You Need Is Love" chorus, perhaps realizing the need for some wild and craziness.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Cab, limo drivers help steer show traffic.
It always starts with a question: "What's a good show to see?"
In this case, the answer led limousine driver Dan Holmgren to a backstage meet-and-greet with Barry Manilow after a recent show.
Not bad for a guy who was never a huge fan. But Holmgren understands, "You can't go wrong going to see his show."
Manilow's '70s hits "take you back to a time when things were better," he says. "You just get a relief for that amount of time that you're there."
Manilow and his personal assistant, Marc Hulett, recognized Holmgren's role in the support network for Las Vegas shows. Cab and limo drivers are all part of the circuitry.

SKY HAS ITS LIMITS: Crane-based restaurateur's attempt to move along the Strip thwarted.
By SCOTT WYLAND
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
A crane lifts into the air 22 people strapped into padded chairs around a white-linen-draped table.
Their excitement grows as the Strip's neon cityscape comes into clearer view and the scattered lights below brighten in the darkening sunset.
The table stops at 150 feet and rotates slowly to provide bird's-eye views of Las Vegas.
No plastic or glass barriers enclose the patrons, who eat a light gourmet meal and drink wine, champagne or water on this sweltering night.
Each has paid $200 to dine alfresco at a dizzying height.

Stupak gravely ill
Posted by John L. Smith/LVRJ
Bob Stupak, creator of the gaudy Vegas World casino and the incredible Stratosphere Tower, is said to be gravely ill and suffering from medical maladies related to lung and blood disease.
His body weight has diminished to under 100 pounds, one longtime friend said this morning after a recent visit with Stupak.
Stupak’s health has been in noticeable decline in recent years, but neither doctors nor a weakened physical condition could convince him to quit smoking.
Like the kamikaze-style gambler that he is, Stupak has managed to make amazing medical comebacks before. I visited him just a few months ago at Valley Hospital when it appeared he was moving quickly toward life's exit.
Within a day, he was back to harassing nurses — and looking for a place to escape for a smoke.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Construction may keep tourists away.
But what about the little guy?
It's a question you hear a lot in the political arena. Now it's time to catch up on shows that may be gone before you even knew they were here. But there are a thousand stories in the topless city, like the one about the hypnotist walled off from his potential audience.
It's hard enough to find the Harmon Theater from inside the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood. You have to go outdoors to a sidewalk to get back in. Now it's no picnic from the outside either. Harmon Avenue is under construction in front of the club — blocking the usual valet and taxi stand — and barricades on Las Vegas Boulevard herd pedestrians right past the building.
Great time to open a new show at the theater, as producer Ray Wolf did with the "Naughty Boys Hypnosis Show" recently. "We're going to hold out and do the best we can," he says. "We did a show with 13 people, believe it or not."
That is pretty amazing. Figure that in most hypnosis shows, that's about how many people would step up to volunteer. Could give new meaning to Penn Jillette's description of hypnotism as "the audience entertaining each other." Hope there were lap dances for all.

Rumjungle at Mandalay Bay morphs from restaurant to club as evening progresses.
By John Przybys/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
Plenty of nightclubs around town like to tout how their guests easily can make an evening of their night out.
But perhaps nowhere is that statement as true as it is at rumjungle at Mandalay Bay.
Every day, rumjungle opens its doors for afternoon drinks and a bar food menu and, at 5 p.m., full dinner service featuring the restaurant's popular rodizio menu.
But then, at 11 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, rumjungle transforms itself from a restaurant into a full-tilt nightclub that offers all of the amenities even the most avid clubber could want.

SHOW REVIEW: Rick Thomas.
Magician Rick Thomas picks up at Sahara right where he left off.
BY: MIKE WEATHERFORD/LVRJ
Thomas got squeezed out of town two years ago, after the Stardust closed and his move to The Orleans — a dubious stretch for tourist pedestrians from the get-go — ended amid backstage union drama.
Now he's back at the Sahara, in a theater that looks and sounds good after being upgraded for the short-lived "Raw Talent Live." Thomas picks up where he left off, as though he'd never missed a day since he first showed up on the Strip in 1997.
The magic is versatile but standard. If anything has changed, it's more in attitude. Thomas seems more at ease in his own personality, marching around barking mock-indignant orders at people: "Go back and think about what you just did!"

ARANYA THAI BISTRO
4195 S. Grand Canyon Parkway; 243-1912
Aranya Thai Bistro has the basics right — the interior is pleasant, service is good and the execution of the food is fine as far as it goes — but we thought the food needed a flavor boost to really showcase the cuisine of Thailand. While fried tofu was pretty good with its vinegary peanut sauce, the too-timid seasoning tendency dumbed down the chicken satay, pork pad Thai and cashew-nut beef. (9/18/09)

CATFISH ALLEY
3620 E. Flamingo Road; 450-3474
It's pretty much all fried, all the time at Catfish Alley, but that's OK (as long as your cardiologist doesn't mind), because they sure know how to fry. We loved the fried green beans and the corn nuggets — crisp-coated lumps of creamed corn — and also the hush puppies, catfish, fried shrimp and baked beans. (5/1/09)

LE PROVENCAL
Paris Las Vegas, 3655 Las Vegas Blvd. South; 967-7999
The high-profile guys who get all the hype provide great adventures, but hidden gems like Le Provencal are lots of fun to find. We loved the free entertainment — our waitress and two colleagues, singing operatic-style — and the slightly Provencal-inspired, mostly Italian dishes that included bruschetta, stuffed clams Nicoise, open lobster ravioli, a grilled veal T-bone and buttery crepes Suzette. LAS VEGAS HISTORY-THEMED CAFÉ WILL OPEN DOWNTOWN.
After a remodel, longtime producer, host and entertainer Tony Sacca plans to open the Las Vegas Rocks Café, a Las Vegas history-themed restaurant at Neonopolis downtown in the space once occupied by Jillian’s. The new eatery will offer themed-style foods and an atmosphere filled with a historical perspective on Las Vegas.
“What a perfect fit,” says Sacca, “To have the Las Vegas Rocks Café situated on Fremont Street and Las Vegas Boulevard, where the ‘real’ Las Vegas began.”
The owner of the controversial Neonopolis, Rohit Joshi says, “I do believe that if anything can be successful in this location, it’s the Las Vegas Rocks Café.”
The café will have a creative menu with items named after legendary entertainers and food selections such as the “topless dancer,” an open face turkey breast sandwich, that will be trade marked.
Sacca will partner with food manufacturer, bakery owner and internationally known Chef Josette Leblond, who has the experience and knowledge to operate a restaurant and produce fresh foods. Chef Josette has opened and sold a variety of restaurants from France to the United States, and she is also the creator and owner of Normandie Pate.
Four years ago when Sacca celebrated the 20th anniversary of his television show, “Entertainment Las Vegas Style,” he wrote the song “Las Vegas Rocks.” His next creation was the Las Vegas Rocks musical clock and a line of souvenirs soon followed that are being sold at gift shops.
From producing, hosting and researching Las Vegas history for his television show for 24 years, Sacca has developed a library that captures and catalogues interviews with more than 500 major celebrities, specialty acts, lounge acts, producers, and video coverage of show and hotel openings and implosions.
“This project seems like my destiny,” claims Sacca, who moved to Las Vegas in April 1981. “We’re aiming to have a soft opening in early December and be ready ‘to rock’ for New Year’s Eve.”

Within the casino sits the Lion Habitat that allows guests a 360 degree view of real lions playing, sleeping and eating.

Recession cuisine brings celebs deeper down food chain.
The month’s big red carpet event is the opening of a hot dog stand on the Strip.
BY: Brendon Buhler/Las Vegas Sun
The celebrities strolled the red carpet, the cameras flashed, television reporters waited with their microphones and the crowd shrieked, holding cell phone cameras aloft and straining against the barrier.
And thus a hot dog stand opened on the Las Vegas Strip.
Oh, how the glamorous have fallen.
Three years ago, even only two years ago, it seemed you couldn’t throw a $300 bottle of table service vodka on the Strip without hitting some castaway from Planet Fame. (Alas, no one tried.)

‘Bodies’ offers education with its skinless anatomy lesson.
By: Jerry Fink/Las Vegas Sun
Las Vegas offers two types of body exhibits – with or without skin.
If you prefer with skin there are plenty of choices, among them “Fantasy” at the Luxor, where the curvy dancers are full of life.
The Luxor is also home to a skinless display of lifeless forms, “Bodies … The Exhibition,” featuring a cast of cadavers supplied by Dalian Medical University in China.
“Bodies” features more than 260 full body, organ and partial body specimens revealing the complexity of our physical selves. The bodies are preserved by “polymer preservation,” a process involving the use of liquid silicone. All systems are go in this display of the human body – the skeletal system as well as muscular, nervous, respiratory, digestive and urinary systems. The only thing the display lacks is a background soundtrack of Frank Sinatra singing “I’ve Got You Under My Skin.”

Is Wayne Newton’s new Tropicana show his swan song?
BY: Robin Leach/Las Vegas Sun
As Vegas DeLuxe revealed early Friday evening on Twitter and then followed with full details Monday, legendary Las Vegas singing star Wayne Newton is back on the Strip. Click HERE for that report!
The official corporate announcement confirming his new show Once Before I Go will come shortly before noon today at the Tiffany Theater in the Tropicana.
In an exclusive interview yesterday with our Senior Editor John Katsilometes, Wayne said the show will be autobiographical and use state-of-the-art video and photomontages to trace his 50 years of entertaining in our city as Mr. Las Vegas.
He told John: “I want it to be autobiographical, but not so autobiographical, it won’t be entertaining.” Wayne says he’s scheduled to play through the holiday season after the Oct. 14 debut and would like it to continue through next April.
Johnny Kats reported: For Once Before I Go, Newton will be backed by a full orchestra and will weave old standards “and a few surprises,” he says, into a multimedia presentation that will include a video montage of some of his favorite moments throughout his career. “I want to emphasize that this will be state-of-the-art production, some art production values that we’ve never had.” Celebrity guests also will appear onstage, in a Vegas tradition dating to the days of The Rat Pack. “I think that’s sort of inevitable, isn’t it?” said Wayne.
But then he admits that it might also well be his final performance as a Strip headliner: “I’m considering that,” he told John candidly. “I’ve made no decisions after the run ends in April.”

Mom-to-be Celine Dion signs new contract, sets starting date.
By Robin Leach/Las Vegas Sun
Singing superstar Celine Dion and husband and manager Rene Angelil may not have settled on a name for their new baby to be born in late April or early May, but they have picked the return date for a new run of shows on the Strip! I’m certain that my exclusive will be shot down by all concerned because it’s so far in advance, but I can reveal that Celine plans to be singing New Year’s Eve of next year back at The Colosseum in Caesars Palace!
It would be some three years since her extraordinary Dec. 15, 2007, final night of the New Day residency that grossed $400 million and was seen by 3 million fans — and just days from her 16th wedding anniversary!
Despite expected denials from both resort casino officials and the giant concert conglomerate AEG, who will produce her new shows, I have been reliably told “the deal is now done.” As yet, I don’t have the full details of the number of shows or appearances, but I’ve learned that she wants to kick it all off on Dec. 31, 2010, “to start a new year right!”
Cirque du Soleil news: founder’s space flight countdown; Elvis show secrets.
By Robin Leach/Las Vegas Sun
Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberte is about to fulfill a childhood dream in 15 days by rocketing into outer space for a 12-day stay aboard the International Space Station. As Canada’s first private explorer in space, he has shelled out nearly $50 million for the ride! It will coincide with the launch of Cirque’s first-ever residency show in Moscow, and Guy got a break from the tough disciplined pre-flight workouts over the weekend to welcome his troupe to Kiev.
When he returns to Las Vegas, Guy then immerses himself in yet another dream: bringing the Elvis Presley story to life as the newest Cirque musical production opening in December in MGM’s CityCenter. It will become his seventh major spectacular on the Strip.
Lift-off for Guy’s space adventure is set for Sept. 30 and winds down nearly six months of training and preparation in Russia, where he will blast off from near Kiev in a Soyuz 16 rocket with the Expedition 21 crew. He missed his son’s birthday in Montreal, so they had long Skype sessions to make up for the separation.
