LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
It has been way too long since hard-core gridiron fans have been able to turn on the TV and catch some of that organized mayhem we know as NFL football.
But it doesn't have to be that way. In fact, with a bit of out-of-the-box thinking, we can watch pro football on TV all year-round.
To celebrate, we once again present the annual compendium of Southern Nevada bars, taverns and restaurants that cater to fans of specific NFL teams.
As always, this list includes no sports bars, sports books or other places where other games are shown while the home team's game is on. If your favorite bar doesn't appear here, it's because the bar's owner or manager didn't call us or didn't call us by the deadline, or because the bar doesn't fit our criteria as a team bar.
With the administrative stuff out of the way, this year's roster represents 58 team bars. (Missing in action this year are bars for the Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons, Baltimore Ravens, Carolina Panthers, Cincinnati Bengals, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, New Orleans Saints, St. Louis Rams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tennessee Titans and Washington Redskins.)
And now, this year's list, and may your team be in Miami February VII for Super Bowl XLIV.

Steve's Las Vegas Quickies:
The lull after Labor Day has other acts taking a vacation, including that other magician named Burton, Nathan. But a cruise ship booking that will keep Earl Turner out of "Voices" for two weeks raised some questions of whether he would return to the Las Vegas Hilton at all.
Producer Angelo Giordano assures he will, but acknowledges the need to figure out a better plan to let both Turner and co-star Lani Misalucha take time off when lucrative engagements come up. One might be a "guest star" policy, with actress Sally Kellerman among the names that have been discussed.
Let's Make A Deal" could be the best thing to happen to the Tropicana since, oh, a new operator came onboard in July to helm a $125 million face-lift.
Even without knowing how visible a profile the Tropicana will have in the game show that debuts Oct. 5, it has to be considered a big "get." One factor that weighed in the hotel's favor was a ready and waiting pavilion space, recently vacated by the Titanic and "Bodies" exhibits, complete with ticket booths and a long hallway where people can line up.
According to Fox 5 News, a group of four casino supervisors and managers at Planet Hollywood have been charged in a phony jackpot scheme that paid out based on 26 hands that were never actually dealt. The scammers reported false winnings from players and split the proceeds among themselves.
The annual Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon, which took place at the South Point hotel-casino this Labor Day weekend, raised almost $60.5 million for the muscular dystrophy charity, organizers say, down a little on last year's record $65 million.
The new Sunday night jazz burlesque show at Mandalay Bay’s Foundation Room continues at 11 p.m., featuring Downtown Mike Brown leading a 3-piece jazz band, plus a troupe of four burlesque dancers.
The long-anticipated Hard Rock Cafe has opened at the Showcase Mall on the Strip. This is a non-casino Hard Rock.
Sunset Station has reduced buffet prices across the board until September 30. The discounts range from $1 to $4 and result in prices ranging from $5.49 for breakfast to $14.99 for dinner on specialty nights. With the ongoing twofer coupons appearing daily in the LV Review-Journal, this is a very frugal play.
Cirque du Soleil is keeping mum about a report that Cirque's Elvis show at CityCenter will be called "Viva Elvis." Local blogger Steve Friess attributed the information to creator-director Vincent Paterson. Friess checked and found that Cirque owns the Website domain VivaElvis.Com.
After reality show jerk Jon Gosselin let it be known he wasn't doing free interviews while hosting at Wet Republic, the MGM Grand's pool party, I exercised my right to not mention his play-for-pay visit. But I couldn't pass up sharing the above photo. Yep, a picture is worth 1,000 words.
Luxor headliner ChrisAngel was in Chicago on Tuesday, taping Oprah Winfrey's show. It was part of his media blitz of the Windy City.
A burglar who broke into former "Peepshow" star Kelly Monaco's penthouse at Planet Hollywood five months ago has been sentenced to 12 to 30 months in prison. Merrill Wetter also will have to pay Monaco $5,000 in restitution. There's no mistaking Matt Goss, the new lounge headliner at the Palms, has the chops and everything in place to make it one hot Rat Pack-style show. From my perspective, adding more classics from the lounge era would take it to another level.
Jamie Foxx will bring his "Blame It Tour" to The Colosseum at Caesars Palace on Friday, Oct. 9. Tickets range from $59.50 to $195, call 800-745-3000.
Best known as the star and producer of his namesake television show "The Hughleys," and as one of the four stand-out comedians featured in Spike Lee's hit comedy docu-film "The Original Kings of Comedy," stand-up comedian D.L. Hughley will perform inside the Lance Burton Theatre at Monte Carlo Sept. 16 – 19 at 9 p.m. nightly. Tickets are $45 and $69, call 702-730-7160 or 877-386-8224.

Grammy award- winning trio Crosby, Stills & Nash (CSN) will perform at the M Resort's Villaggio Del Sole Entertainment Piazza on Saturday, Sept. 26. Noted for their intricate vocal harmonies, the widely-celebrated group comprised of legendary artists David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash have been together for more than four decades. Tickets are $88.
"Shades of Sinatra" will return to the Suncoast Showroom, Oct. 2, 3 and 4. The vintage show with humor and storytelling doesn't try to impersonate the man, but instead blends signature Frank Sinatra favorites with some of the most beloved sounds from his era. Tickets start from $19.95, call 702-636-7075.
David Hernandez, who was a finalist from "American Idol" season 7, has joined the band ENVY as its co-lead singer. ENVY performs a free show every Friday night at Club Madrid inside Sunset Station
Riviera headliner Charo has suspended her show after suffering an ankle injury backstage at Jerry Lewis' MDA telethon. The legendary flamenco guitarist is out until her doctor "gives her the OK to dance on that ankle again," according to a spokesman. Charo has been at the Riviera since July. She was among a number of Las Vegas entertainers who performed on the 44th show hosted by Lewis. The Las Vegas segments were performed at the South Point.

The decision-making is exciting and suspenseful and the audience is part of the fun. Each contestant has a 1 in 18 chance of getting chosen to play – those are some of the best odds in town.

BLT BURGER
The Mirage, 3400 Las Vegas Blvd. South; 792-7888
A inhospitable hostess notwithstanding, BLT Burger was a lot of fun and a lot of good food. The fried dill pickles were flavor-packed and so light as to be almost pickles tempura, and we also found the macaroni and cheese bites, regulation burger (with blue cheese added), a lamb tandoori burger and toffee milk shake all worthy of a fine American tradition and the reputation of the French chef — Laurent Tourondel — who's given his name to the place. (12/19/08)
Overall: A- $$
MARCHE BACCHUS
2620 Regatta Drive; 804-8008
An ownership shift launched Marche Bacchus through some turbulent waters for a little while, but after a chef change and some tinkering, all is well again. We loved the lakeside outdoor terrace and the extensive selection in the retail wine shop – and $10 corkage in the restaurant — but no less than the artisan cheese platter, beef tartare, rack of lamb, pork chop and flourless chocolate cake. (4/17/09)
Overall: A- $$$
SUSHI YAMAGUCHI
5900 W. Charleston Blvd.; 646-0300
No cutesy or risque names for the rolls here; this is an authentic Japanese sushi restaurant, which distinguishes it from plenty of others in the valley. It's a small spot, so you can see the sushi chef work even if you're not right at the sushi bar, and we liked the way he served three of our rolls on one big platter, because it seemed to make mixing-and-matching a little easier. We didn't like that they were out of some common things, but we did like the Firecrackers appetizer, artichoke roll, Alaska roll, shrimp and asparagus roll and the Futomaki, with mushrooms, spinach and crisp squash sticks. (10/31/08)
Overall: B+ $$
TUSCANY GARDENS
Tuscany, 255 E. Flamingo Road; 947-5910
The sauces were a little old-school — a little heavy, and heavy on the oil — but in the meatballs and marinara sauce, both acid tests for Italian restaurants, Tuscany Gardens acquitted itself quite nicely. We also liked the beef carpaccio and the Pollo Melanzana, with its layered chicken and eggplant and cheese, plus the fact that the Italianate decor wasn't overly schmaltzy and that this casino restaurant so close to the Strip wasn't overly pricey. (9/4/09)
Overall: A- $$

ROK Vegas boasts inviting atmosphere where patrons can enjoy good music.
By John Przybys
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
Over the past few years, Las Vegas has become a sort of worldwide Nightclub Central, where clubs that fill every conceivable niche of clientele, music and atmosphere can be found.
But, even with this diversity, not every club fits the bill for those seeking a more intimate sort of environment.
One that does is ROK Vegas Nightclub at New York-New York, 3790 Las Vegas Blvd. South, which is as cozy as anyplace where hundreds of people gather to party can be.
At first, it may look like a "vast, open space," notes General Manager Rob Boyer. "But once you come in, it's a real cozy, intimate atmosphere that you don't expect when you're going into a large club.

SHOW REVIEW: 'Matsuri'
Matsuri' packs a lot for a little, making it a viable option to Cirque.
BY: Mike Weatherford/LVRJ
Ask any teenager. It's tough to fit in, yet be your own person as well.
Now on its third trip to Las Vegas, the Japanese acrobatics revue "Matsuri" clearly has learned its way around the neighborhood. It looks more like what has become the accepted notion of a Las Vegas variety show, down to the magic tricks.
That's mostly a good thing for this fun Imperial Palace show. It stands to be formidable competition for the afternoon dollar, though its face-value ticket price of $62 is the highest of the matinees. (Could be it's "marked up to mark down" at the discount booths or with coupons.)
More here: Charo cancellation: Injured foot or poor ticket sales at the Riviera? BY: Robin Leach. Rumors abound that the real reason Charo suspended her show at the Riviera yesterday, citing a foot injury, is because of disappointing and sluggish box office ticket sales. Producers were allegedly bleeding red ink due to falling tourism numbers and the barren, darkened stretch of the Strip between the Encore and Sahara. Charo says the ankle injury sustained after a TV cable trip backstage at the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Association Telethon this past weekend at the South Point made it impossible for the show to go on. I’d have thought that because Charo is such a brilliant Flamenco guitarist and energetic singer, she could have sat on a stool with her foot bandaged up and won the sympathy vote!

Jerry Springer, one of televisions long time premier hosts, is coming to Planet Hollywood to host a 10-week run of America's Got Talent scheduled to start October 7. The show will take place at the CHI Showroom at Planet Hollywood Wednesday thru Sunday. Tickets are already on sale. Not sure where Nick Cannon fits in with this scene but I can say, even though it's redundant, I want Nick's tailor. Is anyone else besides me getting a bit tired of the Huff on the show? Huff, huff, huff, blah, blah, blah. He's kind of the Paula Abdul for America's Got Talent. He likes all the performers, some better than others.
As reported earlier Las Vegas will soon lose Don Marrandino, President of The Flamingo and other Harrahs propertiese in Las Vegas. It seems Atlantic City has become a rather dismal state of affairs and if anyone can make it work again, it's Don. He leaves a legacy here in Las Vegas that is hard to match when it comes to the right entertainer and the right venue. The afternoon shows , George Wallace, Vinnie Favorito. and the Donny & Marie show at The Flamingo all have the Marrandino stamp of success.
It will be a limited run at the Imperial Palace for Frank Marino's latest show which is co-produced by Adam Steck. Adam has a long line of successful shows including Thunder From Down Under and Louie Anderson, currently at the Excalibur plus American Storm at The V Theater, Planet Hollywood, and Human Nature, at The Imperial Palace… The well-known psychic Sylvia Brown continues to amaze audiences thanks to Adam. I would have to say to Frank Marino that Adam Steck is a good lead to follow.
Here they go again. The best rumors in town which include the one that Wayne Newton has signed a one year contract at a certain undisclosed property. Earlier it was reported Wayne had a big deal with the Tropicana but it went south. Now reliable sources are saying that they are negotiating again and he may have a contract big enough to pay back his creditors. Another current rumor is about Barry Manilow. Is he ready to "jump" the Hilton? A few months ago rumors were floating around that Caesars Colosseum was interested. With such a rumor about Barry it makes us wonder what is the status of the Hilton and the shake up there? I've heard the pink slips are flying out the door and include long term employees. There are also rumors about changes in the "Voices" show.
Grind Burger Bar and Lounge will debut Sept 25th in Las Vegas. This is a novel premium" build-your-own burger" concept allowing customers to have fun in creating the burger of thier dreams. Mark DiMartino, a well-known Las Vegas restauranteur is the power behind this. The restaurant will be located at 360 E Tropicana Ave, between Koval Lane and Paradise Rd.

DOWNTOWN DEVELOPMENT: Fremont Street still struggles.
Economy slows nongaming entertainment district growth.
By ALAN CHOATE
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
Every week, Debi Garrison drives seven hours from her farming community near Fresno, Calif., to deliver produce to several farmers markets in the Las Vegas Valley, ending her rounds at a newly established market on Fremont Street at Las Vegas Boulevard.
It's by far the slowest market she attends, and its newness and the Las Vegas summers have taken a toll. Of 17 vendors who were there when the market opened in May, only four were there Friday to maintain hope that the Fremont East entertainment district will eventually live up to its potential.
"As soon as it cools down, it'll build back up again," Garrison said.
The rest of the district, meanwhile, is waiting for the economy to heat up.

NORM: Danny Gans book tells of glory, pain.
Danny Gans' upcoming book has a chapter titled "The Glory and the Pain." In it are details of Gans' "incredible struggles to overcome pain," according to the former minister who collaborated with Gans on the book, "The Voices in My Head."
But don't expect a tell-all account of Gans' approach to pain control.
"It never came up in our conversations," covering 12 to 15 hours of interviews, said R.G. Ryan. "The only thing he ever said about that to me was that he stuck to ibuprofen, because all that other stuff — he said he had doctors prescribe heavy-duty stuff — it dried out his voice."

From: The Las Vegas Review Journal
Are the ties between "old" and "new" Vegas officially severed?
If you don't remember "then," are you perfectly happy with "now"?
A couple of acts may soon find out.

DOUG ELFMAN: Labor of 'Love' yields amazing Beatles treasures.
At home in his kitchen, John Lennon turned on his audio tape recorder. The tape picked up, in the background, Julian shuffling off to school. John bid Julian goodbye, then began singing a new song called "Strawberry Fields Forever."
Four decades later, Yoko Ono pulled the audio tape out of a closet and handed it to producers and music engineers creating a secret Beatles project called "Love," a Cirque du Soleil show set to open at The Mirage in 2006.
Now it's 2009, and at "Love," between Beatles-inspired acrobatics and aerial feats, 2,000 theatergoers per show hear this audio of John Lennon, from his kitchen, in his arresting and scratchy voice, singing that early stripped-down "Strawberry Fields," easing into their ears from 6,341 speakers in-the-round.
Lennon's simple little "Strawberry Fields" is one of many pleasure gems that came to public being only because of "Love."

GAMING REVENUES: 1,780,000,000,000 pennies bet on Nevada slots in a year — that equates to $17.8 billion.
By HOWARD STUTZ
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
At the end of fiscal year 2000, there were 540 penny slot machines in Nevada casinos.
As of last week, M Resort had nearly double that number of penny games on its casino floor.
And that's just one property.
Penny slot machines are no longer an oddity. The games have become the norm for the casino industry and a large chunk of the slot floor's revenue stream.

The Scenes of Summer
The season is in full bloom at Bellagio.
BY: KIKO MIYASATO/Las Vegas Magazine
Soak in the last days of summer by visiting the impressive floral displays at the Bellagio Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. Serving as a centerpiece for the free attraction is a 40-foot-tall, bright orange-and-yellow Ferris wheel, boasting more than 2,300 lights and surrounded by hundreds of sunflowers. A glass aviary houses colorful rainbow lorikeets and rosella and lutino parakeets. Look up to the sky as three giant hot air balloons soar over the landscape and giant flowers reach toward the sun. Wildflowers are scattered throughout the displays and a floral ladybug, frog and snail can be spotted in flower patches. Water dances around the conservatory, thanks to creative pop jet fountains placed strategically throughout. A giant floral bear and his son, gearing up to go fishing, and a lemonade stand are whimsical images, reminding us of the lazy, hazy days of summer. The display is free to the public and available for viewing 24 hours a day, seven days a week through Sept. 12. Call 702.693.7111 for more information.
The Beatles Love at The Mirage. BY: JACK HOUSTON/Las Vegas Magazine.
When George Harrison and Cirque du Soleil co-founder Guy Laliberté met in the 1990s to lay the groundwork for The Beatles Love, no one could have imagined what, if anything, would come of it. After all, The Beatles camp has been notoriously protective of its brand over the years, so much that you still can't buy their songs on iTunes. As it turns out, the union of the world's biggest band and the visionary Canadian theater troupe is an embarrassment of riches.
Achieving the green light for the $150 million production, Cirque went to Beatles producer George Martin and son Giles to construct a 90-minute musical tapestry that remixes, mashes up and upgrades the original recordings.
Cirque's performers set the songs and the stories behind them in motion. Neither nostalgia nor awe are hard to come by in The Beatles Love.

Another Reason To Go Prima from vegastripping.com
We've heard a lot of talk about MGM's new Prima program where you basically promise to spend $500 on top of your room costs and get the royal treatment in return. It's not worth rehashing what everyone's already said, but to keep it short and sweet, if your plans include dining at Joel Robuchon and grabbing a few drinks, it's very much worth the cost.
But now there's yet another reason to make the promise. A quick look at the Prima booking calendar shows significantly lower rates than any other promotion MGM is running outside of casino offers.
$48 for December? Pretty damn great.

It's Baaaak : Insane Southwest Friends Fly Free To Vegas Deal.
From:www.vegastripping.com
Southwest Airlines, in conjunction with nearly every hotel in Las Vegas, has brought back their truly incredible "Friends Fly Free Offer" for an encore performance.
The promo is here: Friends Fly, Stay, and Play for FREE when you book a Southwest Airlines vacation package to Las Vegas! Book 8/31 – 9/28.
As we stated during the first flight of the friends fly free deal, this is one of the best deals you're gonna find if you and yours need to book airfare to get to Vegas AND are serviced by Southwest Airlines at your local airport.
Here's a sample trip for the weekend of the Podcastapalooza with airfare from Chicago:
Encore (not pictured) costs about $11 bucks more than Wynn Las Vegas, Bellagio is quoted at a laughable $1500+ for the package. Some hotels are offering spa, dining and other resort credits on top of these incredible rates. There are tons of great deals to be had – and ones to skip – but by doing a little bit of comparison shopping you will definitely score a great deal with this package.
It's also worth nothing that Southwest doesn't charge baggage fees on the first two bags you throw under the plane. Nor do they charge extra for aisle, window or bulkhead seating… which can save you anywhere from $15-30 per bag, per person approximately $60-120 in hidden fees you won't have to pay.
The deal expires September 28th (or as flight/hotel inventory allocation is filled)… go get it.

The Mirage plans superstar Oct. 2 concert to celebrate 20th anniversary.
BY: ROBIN LEACH/Las Vegas Sun
The Mirage executives organizing the 20th anniversary celebrations of the casino resort promise that their Oct. 2 concert will make Las Vegas history. They say it will be the largest gathering of major rock stars in one place at one time.
Kiefer Sutherland of Fox’s 24 will host the celebration and debut his rock band. Kiefer owns the recording studio and music label Ironworks with business partner Jude Cole.
Acts who have already signed on for The Mirage concert and with more to come include Courtney Love, making a rare appearance in Las Vegas, Katy Perry, Adam Levine of Maroon 5, Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls, Matt Sorum, Rob Zombie and Slash and his wife Perla. The list is getting so long, I’ve already forgotten the others!
The concert and 20th anniversary party will take place at the adults-only, topless Bare Ultra Pool, presumably so if anybody wants to doff their bra or bikini top and jump in the pool to cool down, that will be OK!
The music act list is growing, and for those unable to get into the party, there will be eventual TV footage for iPod broadcast and possibly a DVD/CD.
