Changes to 'Le Reve' make production tighter, brighter, more romantic
By MIKE WEATHERFORD/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
Perhaps it's fitting for a show about a dream. But the creators of "Le Reve" have grown used to working backward.
The aquatic revue has been in forward motion since its lackluster debut in spring 2005. But this year, finally, is the one where creator Franco Dragone pronounced himself "proud again."
It's also the year creators have been implementing this little thing known as a script.
"It wasn't like we did all that (technical work) and then discovered it was missing. It was just like the next piece of the puzzle we were able to put in," explains artistic director Brian Burke. "Even technically, we had to work backwards."

SHOW REVIEW: 'Le Reve'
'Le Reve' proves shows can get better with time.
By MIKE WEATHERFORD/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
Criss Angel should take hope. Shows can get better. Just don't go braggin' to people who bought a ticket for "Le Reve" back in 2005.
Granted, most people may just remember the big stuff that doesn't change: Jaw-dropping 80-foot plunges from a bell tower high above the circular pool of a stage. A trio of women on a spinning globe. Divers somersaulting from the giant "wedding cake" that rises from the murky depths.
And the aquatic spectacle always was better if you hadn't seen Cirque du Soleil's "O," or other titles by director Franco Dragone that were first out of the gate with deja vu music and imagery.
But "Le Reve" now goes its own way with flourishes of ballroom dancing and an unapologetically romantic story line, well-suited to the acrobatics that unfold in the water or like an aerial ballet.

SHOW REVIEW: 'Sin City Comedy'
'Sin City Comedy' mixes stand-up jokes with retro-sexy burlesque.
BY: Mike Weatherford/LVRJ
You probably thought "Sin City Comedy" was just a catchy name, not truth-in-advertising shorthand for Comedy About Sin City.
But all three comedians on the bill in the V Theater's fairly new stand-up showcase do their own variation on "What happens in Vegas …" Two of them devote substantial stage time to the one experience shared by everyone in the room: Las Vegas itself.
It's local tradition that if you see comedy in Vegas, you will probably get comedy about Las Vegas: old ladies smoking at slot machines, sidewalk porn peddlers, and that time-honored whipping post, the Circus-Circus buffet, a blast from the past that's always good for a diarrhea routine from this week's headliner, Carl LaBove ("The worst day of your life is that day as an adult when you poop your pants").

Coyote Ugly Saloon offers experience much like the movie, but within reason.
By Sonya Padgett/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
People tend to come into Coyote Ugly Saloon at New York-New York with certain expectations, says the club's spokesman, Bradley Owens.
Many of them have seen the 2000 movie of the same name so they think their experience will be similar: raucous, loud and a little destructive. And it is, Owens says, but within reason.
The movie was based on the original Coyote Ugly bar in New York. The Las Vegas version opened in 2001 and has enjoyed the kind of publicity that only a feature film can deliver, Owens says.
The bartenders are all women and they dance on the bar, just like in the movie. Throughout the night, they cool the crowd down by spraying them with soda water. Female guests sometimes donate their brassieres for the infamous display of bras above the bar which was prominent in the film.

CityCenter’s Aria to protect blackjack dealers from smoke.
BY: Nicole Lucht/Las Vegas Sun
Go ahead, blow smoke in your blackjack dealer’s face. If you’re playing at the soon-to-open Aria at CityCenter, they will hardly notice.
That’s because Aria’s blackjack tables will be equipped with an air curtain that shoots straight up from the table, dividing dealer and players.
That’s the next-to-best thing Aria could do to protect dealers’ health, aside from not allowing smoking in the casino, said Cindy Ortega, senior vice president of energy and environmental services for MGM Mirage, the company that owns a majority of CityCenter.

Japanese athletes add action to music in return of ‘Matsuri’
BY: Jerry Fink/Las Vegas Sun
Slowly, the hyperkinetic show “Matsuri” is putting down roots in Las Vegas.
The Japanese transplant tumbled into town in 2006, with an eight-week run at the Riviera. It was a showcase to introduce the production blending extreme sports and entertainment to audiences in the United States. Producers brought it back for a six-month run at the Riviera in 2007.
At the end of July it began its most ambitious local engagement, a year’s stay at the Imperial Palace. The grand opening is scheduled for tonight.
“We would like to have a permanent residency,” says Megan Belk, president of EBI Enterprises, agents for the Japanese producers.

David Copperfield sued over alleged sex assault.
From: The Las Vegas Sun
Magician David Copperfield faces a lawsuit over allegations he sexually assaulted a Seattle woman two years ago, and federal prosecutors continue to weigh potential criminal charges in the case.
The allegations received widespread publicity in 2007 when Copperfield's Las Vegas warehouse was raided as part of the criminal investigation. Copperfield continues to maintain the woman is lying.
The woman, now 22, filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Seattle last month against Copperfield. The Seattle Times in a story Thursday identified her as a fashion model and former Miss Washington USA contestant.

Planet Hollywood is allegedly finding it difficult in funding its financial commitments. This property could possibly default by the end of the year unless management can adjust its loan agreements or secure additional capital. Station Casinos, already in bankruptcy, has posted an approximate net loss of $65 million. attributing much of it to the poor performance of Aliante Station, its newest casino. The slow economy is also taking its toll on our banks, as both Community Bank and Colonial Bancgroup have been seized by regulators.
On the brighter side, The Hard Rock has opened their new 450 room/suite tower and much of City Center will open before the end of the year. The new owners of The Tropicana are spending $100 million to do a much needed refurbishing and renovation of the 52 year old hotel/casino. When complete, the site will have a South Beach, Florida. theme .
It was quite the celebration in front of the famous Welcome to Las Vegas sign on the Strip on August 12. Everything was "rock" to acknowledge the fifth anniversary of Vegas Rocks published by Sally Steele. This magazine is full of inside stuff about our fabulous city, covers all that's happening and even includes some underground tidbits. After five years of publication, we can say Vegas Rocks has become a mainstay in the world of print for this city of dreams.
I don't want to get in trouble with any of the properties but there are lots of rumors surrounding the entertainment scene right now. Santana, Santana, Santana! Could it be the six month engagement at the Hard Rock will be cut short due to reportedly slow ticket sales? And what about the Russian skating show at the Riviera, Ice? Even Beyonce's appearance at the Wynn might have been on the slow side for ticket sales. Seems her tickets were being handed out to high rollers, her entourage, and other comp earners. A call to public relations at the Wynn didn't get a straight answer on this.
All is not lost though. Rod Stewart performed to a sold out audience at the MGM Arena and of course the Garth Brooks name keeps getting tossed around. Rumors have it that he is being offered a 16 week contract at the Wynn / Encore. Are we interested in this Oklahoma cowboy? We sure are. His concerts were always SRO and he would still fill the showrooms. Other names being tossed about would have to include Mariah Carey who is already a huge star and Whitney Houston who would be an instant hit. Everyone says she's ready for her comeback.

BITE Celebrates 5 years on the Las Vegas Strip at the Stratosphere Hotel & Casino.
Launched on Friday the 13th, August 2004, BITE has become one of the most iconic and successful shows in Las Vegas today. At more than 1,500 performances and nearly a half-million audience members since it first began, the undeniably powerful combination of sexy and erotic topless dancers, amazing acrobatics, high-energy rock ’n roll and the darkly mysterious allure of vampires have proven to be a formula for success.
“There are so many factors that have contributed to making BITE a success,” said Tim Molyneux, producer and writer of the show. “The world has always had a fascination with vampires – they’ve been a part of popular culture for hundreds of years and we are once again experiencing a real resurgence in television, film and print. Some people come to see BITE simply because it’s a vampire show, but ultimately they are always blown away by the production. Vampires allow us to do the things that provide the ingredients for a great Vegas show: fun music, high-energy, acrobatics in the air and on the stage, magic, martial arts, gymnastics, contortion, comedy, drama, great dancing, live singing and sexy girls. The show tells a compelling story through the lyrics of the songs and the classic vampire lore of lost love. There’s a purpose behind everything happening and it all comes together in an experience the audience loves and won’t find anywhere else in the world,” he added.
“BITE has been, and continues to be, a great asset for the Stratosphere,” said Stuart Richey, vice president of marketing for Stratosphere. “This show gives people something truly unique and at an incredible value for their entertainment dollar. Everyone here at Stratosphere would like to congratulate BITE on five successful years and we wish them many more to come.”
BITE centers around the Lord Vampire and his search for the perfect female specimen, which he plans to seduce and crown his Queen of the Night. Aiding the Lord is his coven of sultry and nimble dancers, the Erotic Angels of Rock. Their story is told through the Classic Rock songs of the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s. The current cast of BITE includes: Lord Vampire, Russell Hines; Queen of the Night, Jessica Delgado; Cat Vampire, Kristin Ratatori; Tush Vampire, Koree Kurkowski; Ice Vampire, Michelle Diterlizzi; Fire Vampire, Kristel Nichols; Pain Vampire, Kim Langstaff; Shimmy Vampire, Samantha Hunt; Silk Vampire, Kelly Jo Millaudon; Flying Couple, Cees De Kok, Cathy Perquin; and Rockstar, Mark Giovachinni.
Tickets for BITE are just $49.45. The show starts at 10:30 p.m. Friday through Wednesday. Dark on Thursday. For tickets or more information, call (702) 380-7711 or (800) 99-TOWER.

CANAL STREET
The Orleans, 4500 W. Tropicana Ave.; 365-7111
Prices at steakhouses across the valley have gone sky-high in recent years, and in most cases, they're not worth it. So we were particularly pleased to find good value at the elegant Canal Street, where we enjoyed a salad of mozzarella and peppers, oysters Rockefeller, a filet mignon, Parmesan-crusted veal cutlet Tuscan and a chocolate lava cake. Excellent (but not snobby) service put the icing on the cake. (6/29/07)

IBO TURKISH & MEDITERRANEAN RESTAURANT
9755 W. Flamingo Road; 365-6111
Mediterranean restaurants aren't exactly a rarity in the valley, but usually they're few-frills-and-lots-of-hookahs kinds of places. Ibo is, instead, linen tablecloths, soft lighting and polished service. Oh, and great food, including a cold mixed appetizer plate of hummus, baba ghanoush, eggplant salad, haydari and stuffed grape leaves; grilled-beef patties with kasseri cheese; chicken stuffed with fresh spinach, feta cheese and garlic; and just-sweet-enough baklava. 4480 Paradise Road; 734-6342
We loved the service, atmosphere — even the ease of access and parking — at Origin India, but especially the food, of which we sampled the Dahi Ke Kebab (shrimp in garlic sauce), Lhasooni Jhinga (deep-fried patties of yogurt cheese), Murg Lehsooni Kebab (tandoori chicken with garlic), Gosht Dahiwala (lamb cooked with yogurt and a cashew sauce) and, for dessert, a carrot cigar. THE STERLING BRUNCH
Bally's Steakhouse, Bally's, 3645 Las Vegas Blvd. South; 967-7999
We thought the food at the venerable Sterling Brunch was as good as ever but were more than a little turned off by the clumsily engineered seating system differentiating high-rollers from those who are not. But if you're the former or a highly tolerant member of the latter, and if you like roasted half-lobsters, lobster bisque, pepper-and-mint-crusted rack of lamb, desserts, salads, fruits and pastries, you'll likely feel right at home. Overall: A if you're a high roller, B- if you're not $$$$

XS at Encore moves party outdoors for Poolside Sundays
By John Przybys/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
Over the past few summers, Las Vegas resorts have taken to afternoon pool parties like fashionable female sunbathers to designer monokinis.
But, at XS at Encore, that standard Las Vegas pool party paradigm has been tweaked a bit: Every Sunday night, the party at XS, the nightclub, moves outside, to the adjacent Encore pool, in an event called Poolside Sundays at XS.
The poolside clubbing event kicked off its inaugural season last month. However, XS managing partner Cy Waits says he and brother and co-managing partner Jesse Waits and XS co-owner Victor Drai had batted the idea around with one another since day one.
It's "an amazing pool," he explains, and one that lends itself perfectly to a lavish party.

THE STRIP: Historic Tropicana poised for pricey renovation
BY ARNOLD M. KNIGHTLY/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
New Tropicana co-owner and chief executive Alex Yemenidjian is still getting himself and his team acclimated to their new surroundings.
A former top executive at MGM Grand Inc., Yemenidjian is working 15-hour days trying to revitalize one of the Strip's remaining historic properties, which he acquired July 1.
Without the luxury of being able to tear the property down in the current economic environment, Yemenidjian and his partners, Canadian private equity firm Onex Corp., are launching a nearly $100 million plan to renovate the 52-year-old property.
Much of what the Tropicana of tomorrow will look like is a project in flux.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Vegas ripe for 'Talent' picking
Face it. Las Vegas and "America's Got Talent" are codependent. There may be denial, as in all dysfunctional relationships. But talk about enablers …
This week's news was almost inevitable: "Talent" will spin off into a live show at Planet Hollywood Resort in October, hosted by Jerry Springer (who has witnessed his share of dysfunction).
It merely cements the codependency. Everyone understands part of it. If you get yourself noticed on NBC's inane but highly rated talent show, you'll have a future in show business, right? Uh, yeah. Sure. Maybe. Keep reading.
You have to think harder about why "Talent" needs Vegas. Everyone's looking for the next Susan Boyle, but it's not always easy to find dowdy singers with beautiful voices who live in a small town and only sing karaoke.

LEGENDARY LAS VEGAS HEADLINERS: BRENDA LEE: Singer learned young how to rock the house
By STEPHEN MICHAEL SHEARER
SPECIAL TO THE REVIEW-JOURNAL
Songstress Brenda Lee, known for such hits as "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" and "Sweet Nothin's," celebrated her 12th birthday in a fashion no other child has matched: headlining in a Las Vegas showroom.
"In 1956, I was at the Flamingo with the Ink Spots," Lee explained to me during a recent interview. "As I remember it, I was kind of weaved in and out of the show as a kind of little hostess. And I also sang — so we co-billed.
"Of course, I wasn't even allowed to walk through a casino, I was so young. So I really didn't even know what a casino looked like. They took me in the kitchen, then into the showroom. And then when my show was over, I was brought back out through the kitchen and back up to my room. Children weren't allowed … in the casino area."

LIFE ON THE COUCH: 'Top Chef: Las Vegas' judge to show slightly sweeter side.
By: Christopher Lawrence/LVRJ
Toby Young wants you to know he's sorry. Really sorry. Like somewhere between "Honey, I swear I didn't know she was your sister" and "Honey, I accidentally killed a drifter."
The British journalist got off to a rocky start when he joined the "Top Chef" judging panel last season. Many viewers found him abrasive, and they weren't shy about saying so online.
"The funny thing was, people were kind of being rude about me for being such a rude judge," Young says, sounding bemused. "But boy, they were so much ruder about me than I was about anybody on the show.
"Viewers can expect to see a (slightly) softer side of Young — after all, he's still the author of the memoir "How to Lose Friends and Alienate People" — when he returns for "Top Chef: Las Vegas" (9 p.m. Wednesday, Bravo), sharing judging duties on a rotating panel with Food & Wine magazine's Gail Simmons and a host of culinary legends including Wolfgang Puck, Daniel Boulud and Thomas Keller.

DION EXPECTING: By Norm Clarke/LVRJ
Celine Dion is expecting her second child in May, her Montreal publicist confirmed Tuesday.
The former Caesars Palace headliner conceived after fertility treatments, as she did with son Rene Charles, born Jan. 25, 2001.
Dion, 41, ended her world tour in February and acknowledged during an appearance on "Oprah" that she was hoping to have another child.
The Canadian singing star has hinted that she intends to return to Las Vegas after a baby break.
A spokeswoman said Dion and her husband, Rene Angelil, were informed Monday and "are full of joy."
Earlier this year, Angelil, 67, had a heart procedure.

County rejects Strip site for Dinner in the Sky
By SCOTT WYLAND/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
A company that hoists patrons 160 feet aloft so they can enjoy a bird's-eye view of Las Vegas while they dine at an elegant table saw its plans crash to Earth.
Clark County commissioners gave the thumbs down Wednesday to a local entrepreneur's request to move his fledgling Dinner in the Sky to the Strip's north end.
Their resistance prompted the man to withdraw the request. Now he must search for another site.

Greek Isles changes hands.
Loanholders complete foreclosure buy, promise to keep property open.
By ARNOLD M. KNIGHTLY/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
The Greek Isles will remain open — for now.
The property's loanholders completed a foreclosure and acquisition of the hotel-casino last week. And the new ownership group said Wednesday it intends to keep the property open "while assessing the hotel and casino's future."
Canpartners Realty is the holding company for Los Angeles-based Canyon Capital Realty Partners and Bronx, N.Y.-based Spectrum Group Management.
"We are now focused on assessing the property and developing a plan to move forward," Richard Bosworth, Canyon senior director, said in a statement announcing the acquisition. "We want to make it clear that ownership is committed to keeping the Greek Isles Hotel and Casino open for business as we determine the next steps for the property."

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Television promoting Vegas acts
Maybe we'll see the day when Donny Osmond, Criss Angel and Jerry Springer are on the same TV show. Stranger things have happened.
But for now, they're all pursuing what has become the preferred method of promoting a Las Vegas production. …
News that Donny will go head to head with Tom "The Hammer" DeLay on the big ABC hit "Dancing with the Stars" only furthers his Flamingo residency with sister Marie as one of the few certifiable slam-dunks in the recent history of Las Vegas entertainment.
The Flamingo was wise to lock in the duo with a contract extension through Oct. 15, 2012. The two originally were courted by late impressionist Danny Gans and his manager, Chip Lightman, who produced under the name GansLight Entertainment.

Treats from Australia stir the senses
By Penny Levin/Las Vegas Magazine
Whether you like handsome men with long hair, short hair, shaved heads, in their 20s or 30s, you'll find one that will get your heart racing when you see the award-winning Thunder From Down Under.
The all-male revue features Australian performers, who are all sexy, buff and love to have fun and entertain women, which they do seven nights a week. "That's the goal of the show," said Adam Steck, CEO of SPI Entertainment and producer of Thunder From Down Under.
"Women find the Aussie accents extremely sexy, and our guys make women smile and feel special by delivering a wonderful ladies night out," he said.
The format of fully choreographed dance numbers draws from some of women's favorite fantasies, including pirates, firemen, cowboys and knights. In addition to the nightly show, the performers often make guest appearances on shows such as Ellen, Today, Bad Girls Club and even Gene Simmons' Family Jewels.
Donovan Lewis, a charismatic performer who has been with Thunder From Down Under the longest, attributes the show's success to its evolving with the times.
"Our audiences have gotten older. Word spread that we're not just kids ripping our clothes off, but seasoned performers who are adult men," he said.
Lewis has long dark hair, wears a nipple ring and laughed as he describes himself as having the "stripper look" from years ago. "It works for me, and the ladies tell me it suits my face. My mum calls it 'timeless,'" he added.

Dynamo in the Desert
Humor and song converge in entertainer's Vegas spectacle.
BY: Paul Szydelko/Las Vegas Magazine
The opening video sequence portends what's to come: an ominous, fast-moving tornado forms and builds strength in the desert's outreaches, stirring everything in its path, at first tumbleweeds, then trees and fi nally even buildings. It reaches the Las Vegas Strip and Flamingo Road and the stately Colosseum at Caesars Palace. The dynamic natural force that is Bette Midler has arrived.
Bawdy and elegant, sassy and classy, funny and dramatic, Midler is a joy to behold. Unexpected delights complement the powerful songs for which Midler is bestknown – " Wind Beneath My Wings," "From a Distance" and "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy."
The Harlettes (Jordan Ballard, Kyra Dacosta and Kamilah Marshall), a 13-piece band and more than 20 dancers make Midler's vision of something big, something clever, something bold achieve full life.
Don't expect anything remotely Cirque du Soleil here; The Showgirl Must Go On is more old-school Vegas, with an energetic, engaging blend of song, dance and comedy.
Self-deprecating comedy allows the audience to grow more familiar with Midler and her many talents. Delores Delago, the wheelchair-using mermaid, brings smiles, and old, old Soph, a showgirl who has seen a few too many stages, also makes an appearance.
Her emotionally charged renditions of "When a Man Loves a Woman" and "Hello in There" contrast smartly with silly puns, kitschy wardrobe choices and jokes about when "drugs" became "medications."
Born and raised in Hawaii, Midler first captured the public's attention in 1967, when she landed a role as Tzeitel, the eldest daughter, in the smash Broadway musical Fiddler on the Roof.
Midler started building a career as a nightclub performer when her pianist Barry Manilow, now performing at the Las Vegas Hilton, produced her acclaimed fi rst album, The Divine Miss M, in 1972. A self-titled album a year later also soared to the top of the charts.
She won a special Tony Award in 1974 for her work on Broadway. A starring role in The Rose in 1979 led to many additional honors and roles on the big screen, including the popular Beaches in 1988.
A vibrant rose that seems as if it should be getting ready to wilt, Midler blossoms again with this new challenge. With her knack for comedy and divine vocal talent, Showgirl is a sure Bette.

Hotel 32 Debuts: By Rick Garman
Plans had been afoot for some time to revamp the top floor of the Monte Carlo and turn it into its own boutique hotel, but the fire that severely damaged the resort last year pretty much sealed the deal. Now, after months of work, the 32nd floor is open for business but follows a very different blueprint than the rest of the building in which it is located. Hotel 32 is the name given to the top floor of the property that operates as a separate but integrated hotel. The 50 rooms include standard studios and larger suites but all are designed with an ultra-luxury touch that differentiates them from the rest of the rooms in the Monte Carlo.
In addition to unique furniture and decor, the rooms are done with high-tech convenience in mind from the flat screen televisions to the remote operated lights, drapes, and climate control. Bathrooms have hydrotherapy tubs and rainfall showers.
But it isn't just the furniture that is different at Hotel 32. Guests get a complimentary limo ride from the airport and are greeted by a "suite assistant" who is there to help them with their every whim. No need for something as pedestrian as standing in line to check in – instead guests get private in-room check in services. In addition, a club-level style lounge offers guests beverages and snacks.
As you would imagine, it isn't cheap to stay in one of these rooms. Standard studios start at around $250 per night, about 4 times higher than the rate for their regular rooms on other floors. But considering that a similar rate will get you just a standard room at some of the luxury hotels in town without the limo, assistant, and club level amenities it comes off sounding like a pretty good deal.

Tough Times in Vegas Continue: BY Rick Garman
There are some signs that the global and US economies may have seen the worst of the recession, but you'd never know it from looking at what is happening in Vegas. The number of people coming to Vegas was down again in June, a whopping 7% over last year. Occupancy rates at the hotels in Vegas were down to an average of 82%, which although significantly higher than the national average, is about 10 to 12 points lower than it usually is. In a city with about 130,000 hotel rooms, having an extra 13,000 of them sitting empty is a huge hit to a lot of bottom lines.
Gaming revenue was also down but even further – nearly 15%, marking the 18th straight month of declines. Money coming into the casinos was at its lowest level since 2005.
Earnings reports from the major casino companies continue to show signs of struggle. Parent companies of Planet Hollywood, Hard Rock, Riviera, and Hooters all reported disappointing numbers with several of them hinting at an inability to meet their debt obligations. The next step could be bankruptcy, a path that several Las Vegas casino operators have already taken.
Construction has come to a virtual standstill with CityCenter as the only major project still actively being worked on. Everything else from new hotels like Fontainebleau to expansions of existing ones such as the new tower at Caesars Palace, have gone into mothballs.
So when are things going to turn around?
Most experts agree that discretionary (some would say frivolous) spending on things like vacations to Las Vegas is often one of the last things to recover after a severe economic downturn. If things are on the upswing in the US (and that's a big if), it'll probably take a year before people really start considering Las Vegas as a good place to spend their extra income.
Certainly the opening of CityCenter in December may help to spur the desires of people who will want to come back and see the latest and greatest thing on The Strip.
But the bigger question in my mind is, have the Las Vegas hotels and casinos learned their lesson? Room rates, the cost of some shows, and even some dining prices have all come down significantly since the proverbial you know what hit the fan. That's been good news for Vegas visitors since they can get a lot more for a lot less and its one of the only things that has kept people coming to Vegas at all.
Once visitor volume starts going up again, will the hotels start raising prices to the point where most average people like you and me can't afford it again?
I have been saying it for a long time and the readers of this column have been vociferously agreeing with me: Vegas got too expensive. If it gets that way again, they only have themselves to blame if the crowds don't come back.

CityCenter Preview: BY Rick Garman
If you’ve been to Las Vegas recently, CityCenter is pretty hard to miss. Sprouting up out of a chunk of land between Monte Carlo and Bellagio, the soaring, modernist glass towers seem to dwarf everything around it, making what had been among the largest hotels in the world look like Monopoly tokens. It’s an audacious concept, becoming a city within a city, a mini-Strip within The Strip if you will. As the largest privately funded construction project in history, it represents a $9 billion (at least) gamble that could literally change the way Las Vegas does business.
Set to open in stages later this year, CityCenter is not one big hotel but rather a series of hotels, condominiums, shopping, entertainment, and gambling experiences all connected both visually and in some instances physically. It’s dramatically angular glass and steel look may not be to everyone’s taste, but it certainly makes a statement.
And while throwing $9 billion at a chunk of the Nevada desert to build a massive hotel and casino complex may not be the greenest thing one could do, the entire project is taking environmental concerns to a level never before seen in the construction of a Las Vegas project. 80% of the old Boardwalk Hotel that was imploded to make way for CityCenter has been recycled and 95% of the construction waste – stuff that normally would’ve gone into landfills – has also been recycled.
Once the hotel is complete, it will be powered by its own 8.5 megawatt natural gas co-generation plant that will reduce both energy demands on the overall power grid and emissions.
Even their limos will be powered by natural gas (the first such fleet in the world) and their casino will be cooled from specially designed air conditioning units in the bases of the slot machines instead of wasting cool air from the ceiling.
What follows is a preview of what to expect and when:
Vdara – Opens December 1.
This condominium-hotel will be the first of CityCenter’s properties to open when it begins to welcome guests on December 1, 2009. With nearly 1,500 units each with their own kitchens, owners of the properties will be able to put them in a rental pool that will allow people like you and me to stay there as if it was a hotel room. The property will have a rooftop pool, a spa, and fitness center plus a restaurant, lobby bar, and gourmet grocery. It has no casino but is connected to Bellagio by a walkway and Aria’s casino (see below) is right next door.
Mandarin Oriental – Opens December 3.
Of the 627 units in this building, 400 of them will be hotel rooms while the other 227 are condo units. Scheduled to open December 3, 2009, one of the most unique features about this property is its “Sky Lobby,” which welcomes guests on the 23rd floor of the building. The hotel will have a pools, spa, fitness center, restaurants, and lounges but no casino.
The Crystals – Opens December 3.
The 500,000 square-foot mall is the first thing most visitors see when arriving at CityCenter. Located at the center of the complex right along The Strip, the jutting angles of the building are meant to evoke its namesake. Inside you’ll find a slew of high-end stores and boutiques – everything from Louis Vuitton to Tiffany and Co. with an Apple store thrown in for good measure. Several restaurants and bars will be added to the mix including eateries from Wolfgang Puck and Todd English, plus a restaurant from “Desperate Housewives” star Eva Longoria Parker.
Aria – Opens December 16.
The centerpiece of the CityCenter development is a 4,004 room hotel that will feature twin curving 61-story towers and a 150,000 square-foot casino (the second largest on The Strip behind MGM Grand). The hotel will have its own suite of restaurants (including ones from acclaimed chefs Julian Serrano and Michael Mina) and nightclubs, a 70,000 square-foot spa, a pool, and a 2,000 seat showroom that will play host to an Elvis-themed Cirque du Soleil show. Aria is scheduled to open December 16, 2009 although some of the restaurants and show will not open until early 2010.
Veer – Opening TBD.
The twin Veer towers are perhaps the most dramatic element of the CityCenter complex. Each of the 37-story buildings is designed to appear as if it is leaning to the side by about 5 degrees, sort of an on-purpose Leaning Tower of Pisa. Each will contain more than 300 condominium units and they will have their own rooftop pools, spa, fitness center, and other amenities.
Harmon – Opening TBD.
Originally designed as both a hotel and condominium complex, the Harmon was changed earlier this year in the middle of construction to be a much shorter, much smaller hotel only property. When it is complete sometime in 2010, it will feature 400 rooms and its own pool, spa, restaurants, and more.
Encore To Go Country? BY Rick Garman
Rumors are running rampant that legendary country singer Garth Brooks is considering coming out of retirement and that his first gig will be an extended series of concerts at Encore Las Vegas. Both of the concerned parties in the rumor are heartily denying it, but it seems to be gaining traction in various media outlets. Brooks rose to preeminence in the country music world in the ‘90s with a string of hits like “Friends in Low Places,” “The Dance,” and “Ain’t Goin’ Down (‘Til The Sun Comes Up).” He stopped performing in 2000 and has remained mostly out of the public eye for the last decade except for an occasional charity or VIP appearance here and there, including a couple recently at Encore, which has helped to fuel the rumors.
For Encore’s part they are looking for something permanent to fill the theater vacated after the sudden death of entertainer Danny Gans. For now they are doing one-off or short-stand concerts, but a residency – even a short term one – from Brooks would almost ensure a big spotlight being shown on the hotel.
The length of the engagement discussed in the rumors various depending on what source you’re listening to, but generally seems to be several shows a week for three or four months.
If the rumor is true, expect an announcement within the next few weeks.

Passenger on Vegas-bound flight strips naked, arrested.
BY: Mary Manning/Las Vegas Sun
A Southwest Airlines flight with a stop in Las Vegas was forced to make a return trip to Oakland today as a man fought flight attendants and passengers, stripped naked and was eventually arrested.
The man had exposed himself to a female passenger and she screamed shortly after takeoff from Oakland at 7:22 a.m. today, said Sgt. J.D. Nelson of the Alameda County Sheriff's Office.
"Then he punches her," Nelson said, hard enough that it sent the woman to a hospital in Oakland.

Pinball Hall of Fame a balm for the Vegas soul.

I’m hanging out with gun-slinging cowboys, trapeze artists, bowling queens and rock stars. Mike and Ikes litter the carpet. Flickering lights catch my eye as I load fistfuls of gumballs into my mouth and join in on the collective nostalgia that is the Pinball Hall of Fame.
Museums are scarce in Las Vegas. History is forgotten. Casinos are king.
That’s why the Pinball Hall of Fame may be one of our city’s most precious gems. Pop culture Americana glows in vivid colors from the restored machines. Gottlieb and Bally brought us here. Tim Arnold, owner of this collection dating to the 1950s, welcomes us.

A look at Monte Carlo’s newest headliner, Frank Caliendo, in action.
BY: John Katsliomentes/Las Vegas Sun
The new headliner at the Monte Carlo “does a drop-dead, on-the-money, call-the-cops John Madden.” That’s the assessment of David Letterman (see the accompanying clip) of Frank Caliendo.
The deft impressionist who gained national fame portraying Madden on Fox Sports’ NFL coverage and also appeared on the cable skit shows “Frank TV” and “MadTV,” has signed a residency contract with the hotel running though 2019. His list of impressions includes Al Pacino, George W. Bush, Dr. Phil McGraw and Jay Leno. He has performed at The Comedy Festival at Caesars Palace and appeared on all the relevant network late-night talk shows.
In a statement, Caliendo said: “I’m excited to call Monte Carlo my new home. This is Vegas, so this show is going to be bigger and have a higher production value than traditional standup. I’ve got a live band, we’ll have video segments and maybe even some guest appearances. It’s going to have all of the excitement of a TV show, but it will be live onstage, and no two shows will be exactly alike.”
A new Criss Angel emerges in Las Vegas.
Angel much more accessible to fans and media in recent weeks.
BY: MelissaArseniuk/Las Vegas Sun
Did Criss Angel mindfreak turn himself into a whole new person?
The once-guarded magician had been far less guarded lately. He has, rather suddenly, become far more available to fans and far more receptive to media, too.
A few recent events have changed things dramatically. First, the most obvious: Angel’s A&E series, “Mindfreak,” went into its fifth season. There were five hour-long episodes to film and a season’s worth of shows to promote. Second, the magician and his longtime PR man, Steve Flynn, parted ways. And third, Angel made a series of business deals with MGM Mirage, including the opening of a second Mindfreak store at Circus-Circus and the co-branding of Luxor’s center bar, Liquidity, which is now Criss Angel Liquidity.
Combined, these recent developments seem to have resulted in a far more publicly accessible Angel.

Forty-eight atypical hours in the life of Carrot Top. BY Carrot Top.
Hey, everyone, it’s your good friend Carrot Top reporting. I’m filling in for the very verbose Robin Leach. I hope I’m up to the challenge. I would try to write like Robin, but the vocabulary of a prop comic isn’t quite up to par.
I want to talk about my last 48 hours because they have been a bit crazier than normal. I had a reporter from Details magazine following me around for two days for a feature in their October issue, so be sure to look for that. If it’s not a good story, you can blame my PR guy.
Anyway, he definitely got his money’s worth because the last couple of days have included my brother, a human cock fight, Dog the Bounty Hunter, Peepshow and painting an act of animal love on Holly Madison’s dressing room wall.
Lance Burton introduces his silent unsung hero Michael Goudeau. By Robin Leach/Las Vegas Sun
Hi, I’m Lance Burton, and I’d like to introduce you to my longtime comedic guest star juggler Michael Goudeau via Robin Leach’s Web site. Michael has been my silent unsung hero since 1991. He gives me a break at halftime and entertains the audience while I prepare for the rest of the show. He will tell you how he ended up performing for 18 years in my show at the Hacienda and now at the Monte Carlo.
There’s much more to Michael’s career than his talent in performing in the show. Come and see him for yourself, and you will find out why he is the longest-running specialty act on the Strip.
Michael: Thanks for the intro, Lance.
