Everything Las Vegas: Issue # 704

August 9th, 2009

GARTH RUMBLINGS by Norm Clarke

I'm hearing that country icon Garth Brooks has signed a 16-week headliner deal to appear at Steve Wynn's Encore Theater, starting in October.

Wynn's PR department issued a quick denial, saying there is "no deal, officially."

Brooks was spotted at Beyonce's concert Thursday. He has performed two free VIP shows in the Encore Theater in recent months, after it was reported here that he was in talks with Wynn about coming out of retirement.

Brooks walked away from a raging career in October 2000, saying he wanted to spend more time with his three daughters.

Beyonce's weekend engagement was so well received, she could be returning during the holidays, I'm told.

‘Le Reve’ remains the Strip’s splashiest work in progress.
By: John Katsliomentes/Las Vegas Sun

Somehow in “Le Reve’s” boundless and endless maturation process, it makes perfect sense that giant, blooming flowers are juxtaposed against a dozen water-soaked ballroom dancers.

This resilient water spectacular at Encore/Wynn Las Vegas is one of these “barometer shows.” I check in every few months to see if the tinkering is continuing because with “Le Reve,” when the creative process is finished, so is the production. The two are intertwined. I expect that changes in scenery, costumes, cast and music will be constant for as long as the show is in production. This 4-year-old show hardly resembles the hardly buoyant production that rolled out to harsh reviews when the Wynn opened in spring 2005.

Steve's Las Vegas Quckies:

Flamingo headliner Marie Osmond's television talk show, planned for a September premiere on stations in 80 percent of the country, has been canceled. A weak economy was to blame. "This project, under proper conditions, still remains a strong passion of mine," she said in a statement.

Flamingo headliner Marie Osmond will reign as "Woman of the Year" at the Nevada Ballet Theatre's Black & White Ball on Jan. 23 at Paris Las Vegas. After debuting on "The Andy Williams Show" at age 3 with her brothers' act, The Osmond Brothers, she had a No. 1 hit at age 13 in 1973 with "Paper Roses." A year later, she teamed up with brother Donny on "Leaving It (All) Up to You," which reached No. 4 on Billboard's music charts. Bette Midler received the honor for 2009.

Two of the bachelor millionaires on VH1's new reality show "Megan Wants a Millionaire" are from Las Vegas. The two Las Vegans are 38-year-old TJ Diab, CEO of Johnny Love Vodka, and 31-year-old Corey Thomas, director/founder of The Web Squad. VH1 estimated Diab's worth at $6.5 million and Thomas' at $5 million. Both made it past the first round, which premiered Sunday with 17 contestants.

Chef Emeril Lagasse's latest venture, Lagasse's Stadium, is opening this fall in The Palazzo space that originally housed the 40-40 Club. The 24,000-square-foot venue will have 100 high-definition televisions and New Orleans-style fare.

A familiar Las Vegas faces return this fall. Ventriloquist Ronn Lucas, once an afternoon mainstay, opts for five single evening shows at South Point spread out from Sept. 3 to Oct. 8.

Best pork chop ever? Chef Sam DeMarco's Kentucky-fried pork chop at First Food and Bar at the Palazzo is A-No. 1, top of the heap, in my book. It is served with broiled Georgia peaches, a dollop of cream and honeycomb. It's on the daily menu for $14.44 and is available with the DJ Sunday brunch, which runs from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and features the Bottomless Champagne Fountain for $7.

Pop superstar Mariah Carey comes to The Pearl at the Palms on Sept. 11 and 12 and Oct. 9 and 10. Tickets are $129, $179 and $254 and go on sale at noon Saturday at The Pearl box office, 4321 W. Flamingo Road, and Ticketmaster outlets.

Storied singer-songwriter Van Morrison hits The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel on Sept. 25. Tickets start at $75 and go on sale at noon Saturday at The Joint box office, 4455 Paradise Road, and Ticketmaster outlets.

The hard-hit local restaurant industry is losing another well-known nightspot.
Ruth's Chris Steak House on Flamingo is closing Sunday night, ending a 15-year run.

Owner Marcel Taylor said he will continue to pay the rent in hopes that the economy and convention will turn around enough by early 2010 to reopen.

Sammy Hagar is ready to rock Vegas – Cabo style. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer will open his world famous Cabo Wabo Cantina this fall inside the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood. The two-level, 15,000-square-foot nightclub and restaurant will replace the highly visible location previously occupied by Trader Vic's. Cabo Wabo Cantina transformed Cabo San Lucas from a sleepy Mexican town into a major tourism and party destination. The venue will offer a blend of live music and coastal Mexican fare.

The famous Boulder Dam Hotel, which is a historic landmark in Boulder City, was built in 1933 during construction of Hoover Dam and it recently closed due to the poor economic times. The building of late has housed a 20-room hotel with shops, a restaurant and the Boulder City Museum and Historical Association. The nonprofit association that owns the property hopes to raise $250,000 by Sept. 10 to reopen the property.

Carmen Electra's week-long special guest performance in the MGM Grand's "Crazy Horse Paris" had her going topless in the nearly-nude show, which she did twice a night. She did two numbers "Chain Gang" and "Eroticism" and audiences loved her.

The Plaza downtown has opened "Stuffed: The Buffet at the Plaza." The all-you-can-eat upgraded buffet replaces Lucky 7's Buffet. Prices are $7.77 for breakfast and lunch, $9.99 for the weekend Champagne Brunch from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., $12.99 for dinner Sunday through Thursday, and $15.99 for dinner on Friday and Saturday.

The NCAA will no longer hold championship tournaments in states such as Nevada that permit betting on single games (the ban excludes states that allow parlay betting, lottery tickets, pull tabs, and sports pools). Chancellors and presidents from all three NCAA divisions approved the measure Thursday, saying it applies to "any session of an NCAA championship." University of Nevada Athletic Director Cary Groth called the decision "outrageous".

In comments following its second-quarter earnings filing, Boyd Gaming Corp. indicated that it's still interested in acquiring some of the assets of Station Casinos, which recently filed for bankruptcy. Station immediately responded that it has no interest in selling. Boyd also said that it's continuing to evaluate its halted Echelon Place, and is not seeking a buyer for the project.

From August 13, the spa at the Rio is implementing a Thursday happy hour for ladies, with cocktail and treatment packages at discounted prices, plus drink coupons for the iBar and free admission to the VooDoo lounge. Relax and unwind from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. with options like the Mojito and zesty lime mani/pedi for $80 or the Glass of Vino and 50-minute, deep-cleansing facial for $85. Locals get an additional 20% off, so see you there, ladies!

For the fourth consecutive year, South Point will host the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon, which will be broadast from 9 p.m. EST on Sunday, Sept. 6 until 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 7 on 180 television stations throughout the U.S. and Canada.

The "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign is currently out of bounds while Metro investigates what they are ruling a suicide in the new parking lot area. An off-duty officer noticed a man slumped over the steering wheel of a car parked near the attraction around 5:30 a.m. this morning; upon closer inspection he was found to be dead from a gunshot wound that appears to have been self-inflicted.

Academy Award-nominated actor Chazz Palminteri will be bringing his critically acclaimed one-man show, A Bronx Tale, to The Venetian Showroom for a limited engagement October 7-18. Tickets are priced at $46, $66 and $86 (plus taxes and fees) and go on sale tomorrow, Wednesday, August 5 at 10 a.m.

New Tower at Golden Nugget: The downtown property's ongoing expansion and upgrade continues with news that it's taking reservations for the new Rush Tower, due to open November 20. In addition to 500 (almost) new rooms and suites, the extension will add a new pool, a casino expansion, retail outlets, and a restaurant featuring a 50,000-gallon, tropical-fish aquarium to the Golden Nugget's offerings. For now, reservations can only be made over the phone by calling 800/634-3454.

SHOW REVIEW: Barry Manilow
Singer takes admirable detour in 'Ultimate Manilow: The Hits'.

By Mike Weatherford/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Barry Manilow seems bored by repetition, judging by the first half-hour of his current Las Vegas Hilton run. That's why, when it takes a crazy left turn, you wonder if he has completely lost his mind. And you applaud him for it.

The '70s ballad king stays put but doesn't stand still, changing his Hilton showcase more than the Strip's other resident headliners.

It started in early 2005 as a sort of autobiographical shout-out to the Vegas trouper tradition. By 2007, it followed the course of his home-shopping best-sellers, a quartet of albums remaking pop hits of the '50s through '80s.

HEIDI'S PICKS
By Heidi Knapp Rinella/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

BOUCHON
Venezia Tower at The Venetian, 3355 Las Vegas Blvd. South; 414-6200

It still seems as incongruous among the Italianate trappings of the Venetian as on the day it opened, but Bouchon has worn very nicely, delivering French-bistro fare that's as authentic as it gets. Notable were a charcuterie board, the Poulet Roti (roast chicken), Triute aux Amandes (trout almondine) and the silken-sin richness of the Mousse au Chocolate Noir, which requires no translation. (7/31/09)
Overall: A $$$

BRIO TUSCAN GRILLE
Town Square, 6653 Las Vegas Blvd. South; 914-9145

Brio looks a lot more like a Tuscan manse than an outlet of a restaurant chain based in Columbus, Ohio, but that's just part of its appeal. It manages to deliver the familiar with a slightly innovative edge, as in the garganelli carbonara, with not only the customary bacon and Parmesan and also grilled chicken and fresh spinach leaves, bruschetta Caprese that blends the best of both dishes, a somewhat-too-subtle artichoke-and-herb-crusted pork chop, a trio of creme brulee and a lovely soup of the day, creme of morel. (9/5/08)
Overall: A- $$

MIX ZONE CAFE
2202 W. Charleston Blvd.; 388-0708

Mix Zone Cafe is a Thai restaurant but the dish that blew us away was a starter of puffy fried eggplant that didn't strike us as traditionally Thai, but who knew? The mix works for us. We also liked the mint-chicken pot stickers, minced pork Ga Pow, tofu Panang curry and the mellow music and bright colors that give the little place a serene yet energetic vibe. (2/20/09)
Overall: A- $

MONTANA MEAT CO.
6371 Centennial Center Blvd. (also at 9135 S. Durango Drive); 396-7615

We were impressed with the 16-ounce rib-eye in Montana Meat's signature pepper marinade not because it was a great steak — it was more of a good steak — but because it was priced at $18.95, when other places around town are charging twice that for similar quality. A starter of flavorful tiny lamb chops, moist bacon-wrapped scallops with a sprightly orange-mango chutney, macadamia-crusted Alaskan halibut and some really good sourdough bread were all likewise worthy of note. (8/22/08)
Overall: B+ $$

Talk about crazy! Liz Grantham’s life as a Crazy Girl. By Robin Leach/Las Vegas Sun.

I’ve never been a girl who could sit still for very long. I’m always off and running somewhere, trying new things, foods and experiences. Living in Las Vegas has been a perfect fit for this single and swinging girl. It seems to satisfy my yearning for more, more, more! Between dancing in Crazy Girls and Vegas nightlife, I certainly can get my fill of burning the dance floor along with experiencing some of the sexiest encounters ever!

(Like the time I took a dare and kissed a complete stranger on the elevator ride up to Ghostbar in the Palms, only to find out that his girlfriend was waiting for him on the top floor. Glad I wore stain-proof lipstick — she was big!)

I’m a super-active gal (my mom says hyperactive), and being part of the best show in Las Vegas (yes, I’m biased, but it is!), I get to be involved in so many things that you might not normally get a chance to do. Like all the gorgeous photo shoots where I get to wear the sexiest lingerie and bikinis, and now I have many photo galleries of me on our new Crazy Girls Web site CrazyGirlsLV.com. All that time spent posing in front of the mirror is being put to good use, Mom! I’m proud of my photos … so sexy!

Vegas4Visitors Weekly Awards. By Rick Garman

The Stick Around A Little While Award of the Week goes to Donny and Marie who have extended their contract at The Flamingo through October 2012. That’s a lot of country and a lot of rock and roll. The Happy Birthday Award of the Week goes to Mayor Oscar Goodman who turned 70 on July 31st. he celebrated the way most of us would mark such an occasion – with a big public party on the Fremont Street Experience complete with showgirls.

The Cuchi Cuchi Award of the Week goes to Charo, who has returned to the Vegas stages with a new revue at The Riviera. I haven’t personally seen it yet, but her past Vegas shows were a lot of fun so its worth noting.

The Smug Mutha Award of the Week goes to the VIP package of the same name now being offered for Bette Midler’s show at Caesars Palace. The package includes front-row seats, drinks, autographed merchandise, and a meet-and-greet backstage with The Divine Miss M herself. The cost? Only $1,000. Smug indeed.

The Edge of Nightclubs By Rick Garman

For years, the nightclub scene helped to fuel a modern Vegas boom. Helped along by an anything goes ethos (“What happens in Vegas…”), the party spots in town seemed to be the primary places where the hedonistic overindulgence was not allowed but encouraged, and crowds flocked to them. Not just any crowd, mind you, but a younger one that seemed to set the city up as the destination for a whole new generation of visitors. Could those days be coming to an end?

A crackdown seems to be underway on the city’s hotspots and the results have been dramatic to say the least.

A couple of weeks ago, Planet Hollywood was socked with a $500,000 fine for failing to adequately police what was going on in their nightclubs Prive and The Living Room. The clubs had their liquor licenses pulled and have closed while the hotel’s management tries (but so far has failed) to appeal the decision and get the booze flowing again. Although the details of what was happening inside have not been released, it is rumored to be everything from underage drinking to lewd behavior.

Last week another club got socked, this time at The Rio. The hotel’s Sapphire Pool club was closed after nine women were arrested for charges ranging from prostitution to drugs. Done in partnership with a local strip club, the daytime pool club was the subject of an undercover police investigation that Rio owner Harrah’s Entertainment asked them to do.

Word on the streets is that these incidents have scared the hell out of the Vegas casinos that house these clubs, less for the impact on their food and beverage revenue and more for the danger to their gaming revenue. That half-million dollar fine that Planet Hollywood paid was levied by the Gaming Control Board, the state agency that regulates gambling licenses. This very powerful agency has the power to shut down casinos if the offenses are egregious enough and none of the owners want to mess with them.

So things could be getting a little more buttoned up at the Vegas party spots, which couldn’t be more overdue if you ask me.

I’ve been to almost every nightclub in town to review them for this site and the things that I’ve seen have shocked me. Mind you, I’m not easily shocked. I worked in nightclubs in Los Angeles for more than a decade but back in my day the drugs and sex happened in the bathrooms where they belong (that’s a joke, by the way). I’ve been to clubs in Vegas where I saw people openly doing lines of cocaine on their bottle service tables and various *ahem* “adult activities” happening right out on the dance floor. And let’s not even get started about the men and women I’ve seen who were so drunk that they didn’t even bother to go all the way to the bathroom to throw up. Apparently the hallway is good for that sort of thing too.

Now, I’m all for having a good time. God knows, I have a drink or 12 every now and then and I certainly have done things in bars that I shouldn’t have, but the difference is in Vegas clubs the behavior seems to be tolerated and even endorsed.

How much of an effect this recent crackdown will have on the Vegas nightclub scene is yet to be, uh, seen. But all you party people should be on notice that things may not be as freewheeling as they used to be.

Not For Kids Only
Entertainer's got the whole family in his hands.
By: Jack Houston/Las Vegas Magazine

Where did that earthworm go? Also, where did that goldfish come from? Questions come as fast as the illusions in The Mac King Comedy Magic Show, but by the end of the 75-minute performance, you're not so much confounded as you are satisfi ed. The man knows how to put on a show.

Born in Kentucky and raised on the magic books of his grandfather, King has been a staple of afternoons at Harrah's for nearly a decade. He's well known for his baggy plaid suits, country drawl and family friendly demeanor. He's not as well known for a routine that has enough comedy and innuendo to keep adults in stitches. While that sort of thing soars right over kids' heads, the magic hits home with just about everyone.

King takes tried-and-true rope and card tricks and twists them into something else entirely. He invites an 11-year-old boy onstage for a camping trip during which a goldfish disappears and then appears in the most unlikely of places. Then there's the Cloak of Invisibility (King in a yellow raincoat), the part where he smashes his head in a paper bag and a final disappearing act that tops them all.

There are those who say the only good things in Las Vegas happen at night. Give King an afternoon, and he won't only change your mind, he'll blow it, too.

Mac King
Where: Harrah's
Cost: $24.95 and up

Monti-Licious from Report On Vegas.

I went to see Donny & Marie's newest show at the Flamingo. It really is entertainment at its best. Let's face it, Donny & Marie have a great show business history. Their performances are an absolute must see for anyone in Las Vegas, locals or tourists. They are the quintessential iconic entertainers you would expect to see. I simply can't say enough about this show.

We took in Anthony Cools show at Paris Las Vegas on Thursday evening, where he proudly announced that his wildly popular extravaganza is extending its run for four more years. This highly entertaining – not for children – performance uses Cool's uninhibited comedy to hypnotize the audience, and volunteers become the stars of the program. The shows are never the same since audience participation makes for new material every single night.

How about Joan Rivers' dishes and jabs at Jay Leno. After the Johnny Carson incident, Joan never again appeared on The Tonight Show. Both Joan and Jay will be appearing in Las Vegas over the Labor Day weekend, Joan at The Venetian at 7:00pm and Jay at The Mirage at 10:00 pm. Get the gloves ready!

I received a call this week from my friend Frank Marino telling me he'll opening his new show at the Imperial Palace over Labor Day weekend, performing twice daily. Frank is fresh from six weeks of appearing in Tony and Tina's Wedding at Planet Hollywood. He said he realized it was time to get back on stage and will produce and star in The Ultimate Drag Show. Frank must have been very young when we first met, but when I arrived in Las Vegas more than 10 years ago, he reached out his hand to me. You never forget those moments of friendship. Hurry up, Frank, and get back to the stage. We miss you!

The Hard Rock Hotel and Casino opened its new lavish 450 room tower on July 31. Beautifully decorated rooms, suites and poolside suites are a great new addition to the hotel/casino scene. Sluggish economy or not, Hard Rock, City Center and hopefully The Fountainbleau will be creating much needed employment opportunities to our local scene. These are the things that keep Las Vegas growing.

This summer is a great time to catch up on shows like Phantom, Cirque and, of course, Bette Midler. Discounts are available and Bette is offering a special VIP package through November 15 that includes meeting the superstar performer after the show and taking pictures with her.

Try and catch comic and singing impressionist Larry G. Jones at the Royal Resort Hotel on the Strip Larry, billed as "The man of 1002 voices", is a favorite on the corporate circuit and is now making a name for himself in Las Vegas.

Muchos kudos to my Latin bombshell, Charo. The reviews are in for her show at the Riviera and they are glowing. It's true. She's still funny, a bundle of energy and a true talent. Of course her back up musicians and those fabulous looking and talented dancers are a wonderful compliment to the show. I love you Charo.

The Stratosphere has just announced Cloud 999 Wedding Package. This is an en masse wedding ceremony limited to 99 couples. The ceremony will take place at the Indoor Observation Deck at the Stratosphere and will include about everything a happy couple might need, including a minister to perform the service. My only question at this point is why hasn't the Reverend Monti Rock III been contacted to perform this service? Reservations can be made by calling (800) 998-6937 for the 9/9/09 event that will take place at 9:09 PM and is all yours for $99.09. The Rev Monti can be reached by phone, e-mail, blog, etc. Call me!

Returning to Las Vegas after his world tour, Rick Thomas has found a home at the famed and long standing Sahara Hotel & Casino."The Magic and Tigers of Rick Thomas" in the showroom at the Sahara is a nice addition to the north end of the Strip. The show is produced by John Stuart who also produces "Voices" at the Las Vegas Hilton and was the producer of the long-running "Legends in Concert" at the Imperial Palace.

It's been another week of gossip and innuendos. Leave Terry Fator alone, he's allowed to have a new girl friend. He filed for divorce a long time ago. Taylor Makakoa,(aka Taylor Dew), is 21 but some say she may only be 19. I say Terry Fator, winner of America's Got Talent, who is currently starring at the Mirage deserves a new arm piece.

Last week I went to the opening of Marriage Can Be Murder at Fitzgerald's. It's dinner theater with a twist and has been enjoying a a successful run in Las Vegas for the past ten years. Our wonderful Mayor Oscar Goodman is a great sport and my hat's off to him. He was first to bite the bullet on opening night. The following night it was Monty Hall, or at least that's what the billing read, to bite the bullet. Actually it was yours truly, Monti Rock. Monti Rock dying on stage—it could never happen–but it did. This interactive show is quite entertaining and dinner was more than expected. The move to downtown can be nothing but good for the show. John Bentham, who directs Caveman, also directs Marriage Can Be Murder. He has a way of putting everyone in their place and he does a great job.

A good friend of mine, Jimmy Emerson, who was one of the mainstays of La Cage and Bottoms Up at the Riviera, has become a producer. How divine!. His co-producer is Michael Moss and their show at the Onyx Theatre is called "Naked Boys Singing." I understand the show was a hit in New York City and is quite funny. This is singing in the nude, not singing in the rain. Ticket prices are $30. and there is a Sunday matinee as well as Thurs.-Sat evenings.

Brett's Vegas Views By Jackie Brett

A special "Las Vegas Celebrates the Music of Michael Jackson" benefit performance on what would have been his 51st birthday will take place on Saturday, Aug. 29, at 3 p.m. in The Pearl Concert Theater at the Palms. The multi-artist production celebrating Jackson's songbook will include cast members from "Jersey Boys," "The Lion King," "Peepshow" and "Phantom: The Las Vegas Spectacular" plus more TBA. Acts will be backed by a 10-piece band.

Better than purchasing television advertising, comedy magician Nathan Burton, who holds down an afternoon show at the Flamingo where he's signed a three-year extension, keeps auditioning for "Americas' Got Talent." He gained fame on the talent show's first season and went on to be a guest performer on the show. Not getting that offer again, Burton made a trek to Los Angeles to again audition and garner valuable exposure.

The Country Superstars Tribute show that was at Fitzgeralds downtown for two years has opened in the Whiskey Pete's Showroom in Primm, Nev., which is about a 25-minute drive from Las Vegas. The 75-minute production features four or five acts backed by a live band paying tribute to a varying combination of the following acts: Brooks & Dunn, Reba McEntire, Tim McGraw, Willie Nelson, Garth Brooks and Charlie Daniels. There is no lip syncing.

Show times are 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. After each Friday and Saturday show, the Country Superstars Tribute band hosts an after party in the Whiskey Pete's Lounge from 10 p.m. to midnight. Show tickets are $21.95, call 800-FUN-STOP.

The Las Vegas show, "The Amazing Johnathan" at the Harmon Theater at the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood will return to Australia to perform in Melbourne Sept. 4 and. 5, and in Sydney Sept. 11 and 12. This is the eighth consecutive year that the Amazing Johnathan has headlined a resident show in Las Vegas. Johnathan continually adds new material but always showcases the same impulsive, bizarre humor and abrasive wit that has earned him widespread critical acclaim.

The popular "CSI: The Experience" interactive exhibit will open this summer at the MGM Grand. EMS Exhibits, Inc., under a license from CBS Consumer Products, will produce the attraction in the hometown of the top-rated CBS series.

Originally developed by the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History with a grant from The National Science Foundation (NSF) for a tour of U.S. science museums, "CSI: The Experience" gives guests the opportunity to play the role of a crime scene investigator, learning scientific principles and real investigative techniques as they try to solve one of three crime scene mysteries. Two state-of-the-art crime labs will help guests piece together the evidence. With input from investigators from the television show, guests will formulate a hypothesis, validate their findings based on scientific evidence and try to crack the case. For additional information, visit www.csiexhibit.com.

"CSI: The Experience" also continues to tour around the United States and Europe and will open this summer in Dublin, Ireland, and Budapest, Hungary.

COMEDIAN TODD PAUL AT HOOTERS EXCELS AT NONSENSE

At first glance, you think, "This guy is strange." Comedian Todd Paul says, "I'm taking nonsense to a new all time high," and that's actually a pretty good description of his show.

When Paul gets on stage with his long hair, which he constantly swishes back with his hands or a toss of the head, and heavily tattooed covered arms, the thought crosses your mind, "Yikes, what are we in for?" Very quickly and with a sense of relief, you get your answer. .."a whole lot of fun."

Paul starts with a card trick that eventually has him mounting a unicycle with a low-ceiling as an obstacle. He's aided by two volunteers (?) that he skillfully manipulates. He tells them because he's going to stab a card in mid-air with a sword, "When I give the 'verbal cue'_run like hell," and adds, "That reminds me of what my father used to say to me when I was a little kid."

Paul sums up his physical mayhem act with "I've got 30 years of worthless skills" and then proceeds to juggle clear balls and do a top hat routine with a member of the audience.

Paul performs Saturday through Thursday at 7 p.m. The ticket deal is buy-one-ticket get-one-free for $24.95, call 702-739-9000 or visit www.hooterscasinohotel.com.

'NAKED BOYS SINGING!' IS FINDING A HOME AT THE ONYX THEATRE

It seems the Big Apple's hit show "Naked Boys Singing!" is now a hit in Las Vegas at the Onyx Theatre located in the off-Strip Commercial Center where it is now playing indefinitely.

"Naked Boys Singing!" is like a traditional musical revue, but with one big difference. Like the show's title infers the boys don't even have a g-string as they sing, dance and throw in laughs. The show presents 16 original musical numbers, ranging from the comical opening "Gratuitous Nudity" to the circumcision-based "Bliss of a Bris." Show times are Thursdays through Saturdays at 10 p.m., and Sundays at 3 p.m. Tickets are $30, call 702-732-7225.

Terry Fator gets by with a little help from his friends. By Robin Leach.

As the first ventriloquist to ever sign a long-term deal in Las Vegas, I was so honored to have the opportunity to write a guest column for Robin Leach.

My brain was reeling with possibilities! What would I write about? The fact that before every show, I play my Nintendo Wii to get relaxed enough to perform? Or that I go regularly to the EDR (Employee Dining Room) to grab a bite to eat and get a cup of coffee? It doesn’t seem like a big deal to me, but sometimes a Mirage employee appears a bit surprised to see me waiting for the tongs at the salad bar. The food is good (I am not kidding), and I usually meet some nice people.

Then there’s the amazing perk of being able to sleep in my own bed every night. After 26 years of travel, I must admit it approaches nirvana to be able to wake up in my own bed day after day. Wow! How great is that?

I kept thinking about what to write and then decided to ask my co-stars, aka puppets, to help me out. So here’s a little from each of them, in their own voices:

It’s celebration, then litigation, for Zowie Bowie.
By John Katsliomentes/Las Vegas Sun

Zowie Bowie are used to jarring shifts afield in their stage act. One moment it’s dance and hip-hop. The next, Rat Pack-era standards. But today presented a U-turn that was radical even by their … well, standards.

In mid-afternoon at the Monte Carlo, Marley Taylor and Chris Phillips made official what has been reported (first by URL — Ubiquitous Robin Leach) for more than a week: They will perform an extended engagement at The Pub and the Lance Burton Theatre. Dates at The Pub, formerly known as the Monte Carlo Brew Pub, begin Labor Day Weekend, Sept. 5-7. The show at the Lance Burton Theatre, which will be the duo’s earnest nod to Old Vegas called “Vintage Vegas,” begins Sept. 13. That engagement is set for three months.

Chuck Rounds' Las Vegas Entertainment News. August 2009.

August is synonymous with the dogs days of summer here in Vegas—instead of a hot and dry 115 degrees, it's 105 with enough humidity to make you sticky and sweat.  The monsoon showers are always a threat at this time of year, and thunderstorms could pop up anywhere, anytime.  According to all of the weather records, July is the hottest month in Las Vegas…but for some reason, August always seems hotter.  There are still a lot of pool parties and summer concerts going on.  There are a couple of new shows in town, and the convention season is just getting started.

July was a very busy month in town…I think that the heat got to a lot of people…

The huge Fourth of July stunt by Steve Wyrick went horribly.  Just as the stunt was getting underway, the entire rig burst into flames…crewmembers were injured, and the entire event was blown.  In spite of the fact that there were injured people up there, the crowd booed.  It was a bad day.  Steve Wyrick and his company, Wyrick Magical Productions, filed suit against the pyrotechnics company that is being blamed for the accident and the outbreak of the fire. Wyrick's suit alleges breach of contract, negligence, and failure to indemnify Wyrick for his damages and defamation because the incident allegedly damaged Steve's reputation.  Steve does have another big stunt slated for the Labor Day weekend.

In other Wyrick news, "Lord of the Dance" quickly closed at the theatre due to lack of sales.  The show was quickly replaced by the production, "RockStar", which closed before it ever really got started.

Controversy has surrounded Terry Fator as of late…Fator separated from his wife of 18 years and started dating one of his former stage assistants, who just turned 21…they continue to claim innocence that one thing has nothing to do with the other, but it has all the feel of a mid-life crisis.  Let's see…Fator (who is 44) and his wife stayed together through all the years that Fator paid his dues working clubs, parties, conventions, and tours.  Then Fator gets his big break, gets a multi-year, multi-million dollar contract, and now he wants to get separated and suddenly he finds a young model that's less than half his age that is interested in him.  Does anyone else recognize the obvious?

Pool parties have been certainly trying to push the envelope and create a daytime club atmosphere…well; things finally got pushed too far.  The Rio All-Suites Hotel had teamed up with Sapphire Men's club to have topless women lounging around their pool.  Upon a recent investigation there was rampant prostitution and drugs found around the pool party.  Several arrests were made and the Rio shut the party down and severed its relationship with Sapphire.  Harrah's had asked for the investigation, calling it an "integrity check."

Nightclubs have been having there own problems…Prive nightclub lost its liquor license when an investigation uncovered…you guessed it, prostitution, drugs, harassment, underage drinking, etc.   This is serving as a wake up call to all of the nightclubs in town to do more to clean up their acts.

There is certainly good news on the entertainment front in Las Vegas.  There are several new shows opening and a few shows returning to the city.  The late summer, musical chair like shifting of venues is on…

*Bobby Slayton has moved from Hooter's to the Tropicana.

*Rich Natole (formerly at the Harmon Theatre) will be moving to the Tropicana the first part of the month.

*"Country Superstars" has closed at the Fitzgerald's and has reopened down at Whiskey Pete's in Primm.

*Moving from the Canyon Club inside the Four Queens and into the Fitzgerald's is the venerable production of "Marriage Can Be Murder."

*Rick Thomas is back from a two-year break and has moved into the Sahara.

*"Shear Madness" closed its doors at the theatre in Town Square, but the operators will be reopening with a production of "Schoolhouse Rock."

*"Matsuri," which previously ran at the Riviera and the Sahara, is opening at the Imperial Palace.  The "muscle musical" was always one of my favorite shows, and I have always hoped for its success, but the cast of approximately forty performers was always a burden to pay the rent.

*The comedy magic of Todd Paul is opening at Hooters.

*…And coming to the Harmon Theatre will also be The Naughty Boys of Hypnosis.  Their show, featuring two hypnotists instead of just one, promises to be more of what everyone wants out of a hypnosis show.  Their show opens at the end of the month.

The legendary "Empress of Soul," Gladys Knight has had a deep influence on the music world throughout her five-decade career, and from August 7-9, Knight will be bringing her one-of-a-kind performance to The Orleans Showroom.  Gladys Knight made her solo singing debut at the age of four in a Baptist church in Atlanta.  In 1952, shortly after winning a prize for her performance on the televised Ted Mack Amateur Hour, eight-year old Gladys formed The Pips with her brother, sister and two cousins.  With young Gladys supplying the throaty vocals and The Pips providing impressive harmonies and graceful choreography, the group went on to achieve icon status, recording some of the most memorable songs of the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s.

The MAGIC convention comes to town at the end of the month.  This monster show kicks off the start of the fall convention season.   The winter show of MAGIC will bring in nearly 100,000 people and a much-needed boost to our economy.  The men's garment convention is always a popular and well-attended event.  From its humble beginnings, it is now a huge convention that is in town, twice a year.

The month starts off a bit slow as far as the headliners go, but it certainly picks up steam, and of course, September will be crazy.

Donny and Marie, HOT? Oh, yes, and hand me a tissue to wipe my brow.

Donny and Marie Osmond are sizzling at the 750 seat Flamingo Showroom on the Las Vegas strip. They are still incredibly energetic and entertaining at ages 49 and 51, even after more than 5 decades of stage performances all over the world, on TV, in movies, and on Broadway. Despite premium ticket pricing and killer economic times they are playing to full houses, and really giving their all for their screaming teen-like forty to fiftyish baby-boomer fans.

The show is amazing and wonderfully exhausting. Nutra-Marie walks out on stage appearing more svelte that a mother of eight ever should look, and all over the room men gulp the word “wow,” under their breaths. Ageless Donny walks out and women become 12 or 13 again, jumping from their seats to stretch out their hands and scream for his touch. Somehow after all these years they’ve gone from a cute brother and sister act to sexy and sazzy sex symbols. Both Donnie and Marie stir up the madness further by singing in the audience and walking on tables to touch and torture their D&Maniacs.

We can’t help remember who they were before this show because forever behind them play video reminders of their journey. We see pictures of 4 year old Marie sitting on Uncle Andy’s lap, performing with almost every star of the last 5 decades, and her wilting performance on “Dancing With The Stars.” We also see 5 year old Donny dueting with Uncle Andy, rocking with his brothers to hit record after hit record, his Dreamcoat years on Broadway, wearing long hair and Elvis-like costumes, winking at screaming teens, and promoting his fifty-first and latest album.

Not that younger people wouldn’t enjoy the show, it’s a great clean family experience. But maybe being able to understand the lyrics and watching older folks swoon like ‘tweens would put them off just a bit. Let’s rate it “E-13? for “Everyone, but minors should have a driver’s license so they can transport their intoxicated parents home.”

After opening with Donny, Marie solos first singing her greatest hit “Paper Roses,” of course. Next she goes step for step with backup dancers who are young enough to be her grandchildren, and they have to keep up with her. She dances, sings, jokes and teases the audience and works her way through Boogie-Woogie, show tunes, and edgy pop rock numbers. Her most surprising offering, however, is the introduction of the newest love of her life, Opera. Marie is amazing again and beautiful in voice and style.

Donny’s solo set is pure charisma and a joyous outpouring of zesty showmanship. Donny is well trained and properly voiced in every song. He never “croons,” but still delivers every familiar tune with deep affection and feeling. His adoring audience responds in kind. After “Puppy Love,” “Soldier of Love,” and “Any Dream Will Do” Donny gets to break out and whack the audience with a little Acid Osmond-Rock. “Crazy Horses” slams and spins out over the edge of conservative sanity and really delivers the fun, if not the absurdity of harder rock songs.

When Donny and Marie come back together they joke and tease and poke at each other like brothers and sisters, and compete against each other in a “Westside Story” like dance competition that even takes their breath away. Here the question is answered that everyone is dying to ask. Yes, Donny is thinking about competing on “Dancing With The Stars,” and the crowd goes wild.

The show literally ends with a bang as party string is shot out over the showroom and the audience screams for more. Of course they get their encore, and the sizzle continues in the hearts of the D&Maniacs as they pour out the showroom door.

“What Las Vegas has been missing is a true variety show that conveys the real essence of America and the country’s love of homegrown talent,” said the late Danny Gans, winner of numerous “Entertainer of the Year” accolades, and producer of this show. “When you couple that element with the current Las Vegas entertainment landscape, we feel Donny and Marie provide the perfect combination and something no one else is making available.”

Donnie and Marie perform at 7:30pm Tuesday through Saturday at the Flamingo Hotel.

Far-Out Feats From the Far East
Japanese athletes astound. By: Robert Wiley-Brown/Las Vegas Magazine

The flavor of France has touched Las Vegas for years with the welcomed invasion of Cirque du Soleil. And now, our neighbors from the western side of the Pacific are bringing their influence to the city with Matsuri.

This elaborate production encompasses some of the best physical entertainment that Japan has to offer, as well as dance, comedy and a dose of Japanese culture. The cast consists of professional athletes and Olympic medalists performing acts of extreme sportsmanship that require them to push their well-tuned talents to their limits – all set to a fast-paced, high-energy score. You will find yourself wanting to jump up and join them just like you and your family and friends do from the comfort of your living room during a televised football game.

Still, regardless if the entertainers are catapulting you into a different world as you watch them do unimaginable things with BMX bikes or simply hypnotize you with the rhythms of their native drums, one thing is for sure…a good time will be had by all.

Matsuri

Beyonce Knowles spreads her wings in smaller venue.
By MIKE WEATHERFORD/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Can she come back and do this again sometime? It seems like something this child was destined to do. Only next time, can we skip the $1,100 ticket part?

There’s no safer bet for future Cher-style Vegas divahood than Beyoncé Knowles. She’s still a month shy of 28 and, with the box office rake of “Obsessed,” only now starting to explore the full potential of her movie career. Vegas can wait, ’tis true.

But nothing in this career is left to chance. Beyoncé is staking an early claim on her Las Vegas future with a four-night custom run in the Encore Theater, which concludes Sunday night. Cameras are set to roll on the final show, with a planned DVD to give regular fans a chance to see this early and respectable attempt to grow beyond arena-pop mechanics into a more intimate and authentic showcase.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Show lineups a game of chance.

I look at the lineup for The Mirage and yawn: Jay Leno, Ray Romano, Brad Garrett, Kevin James. Sometimes they really shake things up and team Romano with James instead of with Garrett.

Nothing wrong with all this from a tourist's perspective. Or from that of corporate parent MGM Mirage, which is trying to keep its stock price above the cost of a fast-food lunch. These are big names, and if they can fill a big theater several times per year, locals can't complain about the lack of variety.

I look at the coming attractions for the South Point and I go, "Huh?"

LEGENDARY LAS VEGAS HEADLINERS: CAROL LAWRENCE: One Step At a Time.

Dance career blossomed into Broadway and club stardom
By STEPHEN MICHAEL SHEARER
SPECIAL TO THE REVIEW-JOURNAL

Forever remembered as Maria in Broadway's "West Side Story," Carol Lawrence is what is called in the industry a "triple threat." She is not only a singer and actress, but a trained dancer.

These skills served her well in Las Vegas, both as a solo act and with her former husband Robert Goulet.

When she made her Las Vegas debut at the Flamingo on Dec. 27, 1963, she stunned audiences and critics alike with her dancing prowess and her comedic skills, as well as with her strong singing.

DOUG ELFMAN: Talent show acts have links to Las Vegas.

A handful of performers with Las Vegas ties made it into the top 40 of "America's Got Talent," including triplets who play violin; George Wallace's sometimes-opener Mosaic; and a chain saw juggler who likes to play with fire.

If you watch the beginning of the quarterfinals in tonight's two-hour episode (at 9 p.m., KVBC-Channel 3), here's a primer.

Nostalgic, not noble: Mob Museum not meant to glorify organized crime, officials say.

Mob Museum not meant to glorify organized crime, officials say
By ALAN CHOATE
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Tuesday's Mob Museum announcement could make your head spin from the contradictions.

There were elected officials and a former U.S. senator dressed as mobsters in suits and fedoras giving their blessing to a project they hope will energize downtown Las Vegas and give tourists a new reason to visit.

For props they had a crowbar and a baseball bat, implements for which the mob famously found creative uses. And with great excitement, one of the exhibits was announced: a wall where seven people were mercilessly gunned down.

Which just shows the tricky nature of the task of the Las Vegas Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement: showcasing the role of mobsters in local history while trying not to glorify the organized crime.
