TROPICANA OWNERS PLAN $100 MILLION UPGRADE.
By ARNOLD M. KNIGHTLY/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

The Tropicana’s new ownership group plans to spend more than $100 million in the next year for a total transformation of the property, the group’s chief executive officer told gaming regulators today.

Former MGM Grand Inc. President and Chief Operating Officer Alex Yemenidjian discussed his company’s plans for the Strip property during an appearance before the Gaming Control Board, which recommended approval of Armenco Holdings, a limited liability company controlled by Yemenidjian, to take over a gaming operations until the property’s new owners are licensed.

“We’re going to embark on a journey to transform the Tropicana to pre-eminence,” Yemenidjian told regulators during the hearing in Carson City.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Charo headed back to Vegas.

The famous cry of "Cuchi-cuchi!" hasn't echoed down the Strip since 2003. But look out boys, Charo is headed to the Riviera, taking over the former "An Evening at La Cage" showroom on July 10.

Perhaps the only entertainer who combines boobie jokes and flamenco guitar, Charo was set to get some early exposure by going on Fox News' "The O'Reilly Factor" Wednesday. She taped a rebuttal to recent jokes by comedian Dennis Miller about Latinas and "marry(ing) Xavier Cugat," Charo's first husband.

Charo briefly headlined the Sevilla nightclub (now the V Theater) at the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood before it went bankrupt in April 2003. The part-year Las Vegan mostly has toured tribal casinos since then.

Steve's Las Vegas Quickies:

Confirmed sightings of Wynn's British girlfriend, Andrea Hissom, have increased this month at Wynn Las Vegas and Encore, amid rumors that she's in the process of moving here after an amicable agreement was reached between Steve and Elaine Wynn, who are divorcing.

Beginning today, Hawaiian Tropic Zone inside Miracle Mile Shops hosts a movie night every Tuesday and Sunday at 10 p.m. Catch the biggest blockbusters and beloved classics on Hawaiian Tropic Zone’s 36-foot tall plasma screen wall while snacking on complimentary popcorn. Tuesday nights feature newer releases while some of the most popular flicks from the past couple years are screened on Sunday. Guests must be 21 years of age or older.

Lance Burton's future at the Monte Carlo remains a big question mark, but two new magic shows arrive elsewhere during the family vacation season.

Rick Thomas and his white tigers will open at the Sahara on July 1. Thomas had a long tenure on the Strip, performing at the Tropicana and Stardust before his show at The Orleans closed in June 2007.

"Amazed" teams three magicians — Mike Rayburn, Tim Gabrielson and Buzz Sutherland — for afternoon shows in the V Theater at the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood starting June 27. Gabrielson performed "Keep It Funny" at the House of Blues in 2007 and has filled in for Mac King at Harrah's Las Vegas.

"Trent Carlini's Elvolution" is closed at the Steve Wyrick Theatre at the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood, though at this writing there seemed to be indecision about whether it would return.

"Country Superstars Tribute" is wrapping up at Fitzgeralds on June 28, with "Marriage Can Be Murder" moving in the next day.

After two years, the Canyon Club continues to be the coolest room downtown that no one has ever seen. Despite its underwhelming track record, it will remain an entertainment venue, with new plans to be announced soon, says Four Queens spokeswoman Lisa Robinson.

Gary Canter's legendary Jewish delicatessen from Los Angeles brings its famous sourdough rye to the Race & Sports Book at Mandalay Bay. This genuine deli experience features a menu of original corned beef, pastrami and other Canter’s favorites, including matzo ball soup and New York-style cheese cake.

Gary Canter’s Delicatessen is open Sunday – Thursday, 10 a.m. – 10 p.m.; Friday & Saturday, 10 a.m. – midnight.

Sgt. Pepper, a young dolphin at the Mirage Dolphin Habitat, died yesterday due to complications from a lung infection. He was born in captivity on June 8, 2007 so would have turned 2 years old on Monday. Captive dolphins typically suffer much higher mortality rates than those in the wild and he's the 12th dolphin to die since the Mirage opened the habitat in 1990.

After months and months of ominous rumblings, Trader Vic's had made it official: It's closing. The date has yet to be announced and the restaurateur has employees on schedule through June 13, so there still may be time to partake of the Polynesian fare.

It's rare when a casino publicizes the fact that it's losing a show to a competitor, so give props to the The Four Queens. It told us what Fitzgeralds would not: Marriage Can Be Murder is closing at the 4Q and will reopen at the Fitz on June 29. It will play Sun.-Sat. at 6 p.m., as before. Ticket prices will also hold firm at $60.45 and $76.95. Country Superstars closes at the Fitz on June 12.

Throughout the summer, Station Casinos will be offering special BBQ stations at all Feast and Festival buffets featuring a variety of meats, BBQ sauces, sides, and desserts available during lunch and dinner. There's also a daily raffle at each buffet at 6:30 p.m. for a Weber grill. One raffle ticket will be given to each paying guest 21 years and older and at the end of the day, raffle ticket holders can check at the Rewards Center to see if they've won (you have 24 hours to claim your prize).

First there was the Hoops game from Zumanity and the slot game at Fantasy… Now, we have a whole heap of craziness from MGM Grand's Crazy Horse Paris, including your "Crazyscope," "Find Your Crazy Match," "Ask a Crazy Question," "Send a Crazygram," and, while you're waiting for any of these to load, get a load of "Crazy Facts" (like, they get through 720 pairs of false eyelashes a year). Must be 18+ to enter any of the aforementioned sites. For reviews of all three of these shows, plus all the other erotic productions, gentlemen's clubs, and European-style pools in Las Vegas, download our unique and up-to-the-minute Topless Vegas guide.

A mid-June opening is slated for the opening of a downtown branch of The Omelet House, a local institution. It will be just inside the valet-parking entrance of the Plaza Hotel & Casino. Famous for its zucchini sticks, Omelet House was a Las Vegas Review-Journal staff pick for "Best Power Lunch." The Omelet House currently has two Vegas locations: 2160 W. Charleston Blvd. and 316 N. Boulder Hwy. The downtown Omelet House will reportedly maintain the same 7 a.m.-3 p.m. hours as its outlying counterparts.

The Westgate timeshare tower at Planet Hollywood is taking bookings, starting Nov. 1. Rates are as low as $137/night for a 400-square-foot studio (based on single occupancy and a two-night stay Nov. 1-3). Amenities specific to PH Towers — its official name — are a health club and a tropical pool boasting 32 cabañas.

Hot on the heels of our discovery of the castle's strip poker nights every Saturday (yep, it's for real — and it's a dancer, not the players, thank goodness, who removes items of clothing as participants are busted out), comes word of their new property-wide beer pong promotion! Purchase a $20 pitcher of beer to participate in the game — apparently beer pong tables are located throughout the resort. Must be 21+

The latest addition to the Palms "Fantasy Suites," which currently include the famous Hardwood, Kingpin, Hugh Hefner, Realworld, Crib, Celebrity, and Erotic suites, among others, is the Barbie Suite. Naturally, it features a lot of pink, plus features including a mirror frame constructed, Busby-Berkeley-style (should that be Busby-Barbie?), from 100 swimsuited dolls, and Barbie-print upholstery and wall coverings

All summer long Wolfgang Puck will be offering Las Vegas locals 25% off their check at his CUT, Spago, Chinois, Postrio, and Trattoria del Lupo restaurants.

There's a new mentalist in town: British mind-reader Luke Jermay opens at O'Shea's on June 5. He'll hold down the 7 p.m. slot Tues.-Sat. and tickets are $32. However, if you buy tickets to both Jermay's show and Freaks, O'Shea's is offering a combined admission of $43.96.

Lounge legend Butera, 81, dies.
Swing saxophonist played with Prima.

By MIKE WEATHERFORD/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Sam Butera, whose saxophone kept the Strip swingin' for 50 years, died Wednesday in Las Vegas. He was 81.

The Louis Prima band, with Butera as his saxophone sidekick, gave Las Vegas a distinctive sound and a freewheeling, all-night image when they made the Sahara lounge "The Wildest Show in Town" in late 1954.

Prima died in 1978, but Butera kept the legacy going until 2004, when he hung up the saxophone and declared himself retired, citing complications from a heart condition and disappointment in a Las Vegas that had moved beyond its lounge legacy.

A Las Vegan since 1961, Butera died about 6:15 a.m. Wednesday of complications of pneumonia at Sunrise Hospital, a family member said.

Farmers market at Palazzo provides pleasant surprise to Strip visitors.

By BENJAMIN SPILLMAN/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Portland, Ore., claims to host "the best farmers markets in the country.

"But until those hippies get cocktail service, blackjack and a Cartier watch store within a few steps of the produce, can they really say it's better than a farmers market at the Palazzo on the Strip?

Granted, the Las Vegas market lasted all of four hours and boasted just eight vendors compared with hundreds of vendors and five weekly markets for our patchouli-scented friends to the north.

HEIDI'S PICKS By Heidi Knapp Rinella/LVRJ

HUGO'S CELLAR
Four Queens, 202 Fremont St.; 385-4011

A dip in service after a change in ownership a few years back has been reversed, we're happy to say, and Hugo's Cellar has returned to its rightful place as the downtown spot that best perpetuates all that was good about Old Las Vegas. The Hot Rock Specialty is a long tradition that was even better than we remembered (the stone seasoned with chopped shallots and used to cook fish, beef, chicken and shrimp) and we liked the Duckling Anise Flambe and the classic Veal Oscar. Oh, and one of the best things about Hugo's — the tableside salad cart. (2/13/09)

LA MADONNA
6115 S. Fort Apache Road; 586-0925

La Madonna calls its food "avant-garde" and maybe it is, but only insofar as it's more sophisticated and skillfully prepared than much of what passes for "Mexican" food in our fair city. To wit: amazing crab cakes, shrimp tamales, a fresh-corn tamale, shredded-beef enchiladas, fish tacos and some nice fruity, housemade sangria. (5/23/08)

THE MELTING POT
8704 W. Charleston Blvd.; 384-6358 (also at 8855 S. Eastern Ave.)

The Melting Pot isn't the kind of place to consider if you're looking for cutting-edge cuisine, but sitting around a pot of fondue with friends or a loved one can be a fun, memorable experience. Of the various flavors and combinations available, you won't likely go wrong with the traditional cheese with Emmenthaler and Gruyere; the Signature Selection of fresh fish, shrimp, chicken, beef tenderloin and teriyaki-marinated sirloin; and nearly any version of chocolate. Rio's VooDoo Beach offers pool parties with plenty of music, drinks, comfort.
By John Przybys/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Remember when sneaking into a hotel pool required nerves of steel and a bit of stealth?

These days, thanks to Las Vegas' spate of summertime pool parties, locals can check out area hotels pools deception-free.

Take the Rio, whose pools always have been among the city's coolest. Thanks to the hotel's VooDoo Beach summer pool parties, locals now can party in the sun just like the tourists do.

VooDoo Beach has been a summertime staple at the just-off-Strip property for two years now, says David DeLeo, the Rio's I-Bar and pool manager.

BY: Cy Ryan/Las Vegas Sun

For the 16th straight month, gambling win on the Las Vegas Strip tumbled, falling 15.7 percent in April with only penny and $100 slot machines showing a gain.

The state Gaming Control Board reports the 41 casinos on the Strip won $441.3 million, computed before expenses and taxes. And over the past 12 months, the gaming win has been down 15.1 percent.

North Las Vegas and Boulder Strip casinos in Clark County produced an increase in the state in the year-to-year comparison.

The board said casinos statewide won $859.4 million, down 14 percent from April 2008.

Vegas names round out Forbes Top 100 list.
BY: Amanda Finnegan/Las Vegas Sun

A magical team, a longtime illusionist and a cooking legend all represent Las Vegas on Forbes’ annual list of "The World’s Most Powerful Celebrities."

The Celebrity 100, which includes film and television actors, models, chefs, athletes, authors and musicians, is a measure of entertainment-related earnings and media presence.

MGM Grand regular David Copperfield hit the list at No. 80 after making an estimated $30 million from June 2008 to June 2009.

One of Las Vegas’ most famed chefs, Wolfgang Puck, made the list at No. 95 with $18 million.

Magic duo Penn and Teller rounded out the list at No. 96 with a combined $20 million.

Not a resident but a regular fighter in Las Vegas, Manny Pacquiao, was new to the list, ranking No. 57 with $40 million.

"The Celebrity 100 is a measure of power based on money and fame,” Forbes said of its report. "Fame is calculated using Web hits on Google Blog Search, TV/radio mentions on LexisNexis, overall press mentions on Factiva and the number of times a celebrity's image appeared on the cover of 25 consumer magazines."

Rich heritage of exotic dance. BY Kristen Peterson/Las Vegas Sun.

That the annual Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend takes place in Las Vegas seems logical — what with the boas, the costumes and the Strip’s all-around “sex for sale” mentality.

But if this weekend’s events teach you anything, it will be that equating today’s pole dancers with yesterday’s burlesque performers is a big faux pas, especially among the women who carved out careers combining the artistry of theater, costuming, character and even comedy with the ol’ bump and grind.

“Burlesque is so big right now. It’s become this catchall phrase for adult entertainment,” says Laura Herbert, Burlesque Hall of Fame representative. “But not everybody who takes off their clothes is a burlesque performer.”

Entertainer says he’s exporting Vegas to the rest of the country.
White tigers in tow, magician Rick Thomas will tour U.S. and Canada through summer.

BY: Jerry Fink/Las Vegas Sun

Tourism is down. Conventions are down. Fewer folks are coming to Las Vegas to see shows.

So if America isn’t coming to Vegas, magician Rick Thomas — known for his white tiger co-stars — is taking Vegas to America.

“There’s nothing wrong with taking Vegas to the people,” the 46-year-old performer said shortly before departing on a 50-city tour of the United States and Canada that will continue at least through August. “When stage lights go on, it doesn’t matter where you are.”

Taking a full-scale magic show on the road isn’t as complicated as it might seem.

Mini Reviews BY Rick Garman

Peepshow Mini-Review
Most topless shows in Las Vegas come in two varieties. There’s the old-fashioned, and nearly extinct, showgirl/variety show style with women in big headdresses parading across the stage in between trained dog acts and then there is the modern, some will say trashier, versions which is usually just women stripping down to their g-strings, often in a variety of fantasy style set pieces (naughty nurses anyone?).

“Peepshow,” the new production playing at Planet Hollywood, falls into its own category. It’s a re-imagining of classic fairy tales (Little Bo Peep, Three Little Pigs, etc.) told as an excuse for women to take their clothes off. It’s odd, definitely, but compelling in a strange way since at least it’s something different – at least they are trying to be creative before they show you the flesh. Some may not think that’s a good thing, but they are probably in a cab to a strip club instead of coming here anyway.

Headed by Mel B. (formerly of The Spice Girls) and Kelly Monaco (soon to be replaced by Holly Madison), the cast includes several fantastic singers, a lot of talented dancers (doing much more than just showing their hardware), and some pretty good choreography. Music is a mix of original numbers and cover tunes but they are all sung live with a full band, which is another nice change of pace.

Terry Fator Mini-Review
Fator won a season of the NBC competition show “America’s Got Talent,” and he is proving he has plenty of it with his unique show at The Mirage that blends ventriloquism with celebrity impersonations. Sound odd? Yes, it is, but also confounding in its old-fashioned sensibility.

Here’s how it works: he’ll bring out a puppet (there’s a cowboy, a stoner, a “cougar,” and more) and each of them banters with his or her master and then “sings” a song or three in the style of whomever did that song originally. So you might have one doing Garth Brooks while another does Aaron Neville and a third does Elvis. The impressions themselves range from pretty good to perfect, but all of them are pretty amazing considering the guy doing them isn’t opening his mouth.

While enjoyable in a mostly inoffensive way, there’s something not quite there about the show. Fator seems to be more comfortable with a puppet on his arm than as himself and his pacing in between numbers and by himself was laconic to the point of sleepiness. And the layout of the theater doesn’t help, with large chunks of the audience facing giant television screens instead of the stage (try to get a seat in the center if you want to see him instead of a broadcast image of him).

Lion King Mini-Review
What do you do after you’ve won a Tony award and played forever on Broadway and in touring shows around the world? Come to Vegas of course! It’s like a step in the natural evolution of anything showbiz. Such is the path for Disney’s “The Lion King” now playing at Mandalay Bay.

For those who have never seen the show or the animated movie it is based on, the story is fairly simple – it’s sort of a stripped down version of “King Lear” with lions, as the evil Scar plots to murder his brother and steal his kingdom, exiling the rightful heir to the throne, cub Simba. The plot and the Elton John/Tim Rice music are almost incidental to the dramatic and delightful staging featuring puppets and costumes that evoke rather than emulate. It is a beautifully done show and a delight for children, although it does have some scary moments so parents of wee ones have been warned

The show is mostly intact from its Broadway version although even though it is slightly shortened, it still runs a remarkably long 2 ½ hours with intermission patience is required.

Lenny's Las Vegas BY Len Butcher

Blues, Brews & BBQ
You’re in for a real treat June 20 at the Cannery as it hosts the eighth annual Blues, Brews & BBQ Festival Saturday, June 20. Headlining entertainment includes Marcia Ball, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, John Lee Hooker, Jr. and Ironing Board Sam. In addition, delicious summer barbecue and handcrafted beers and ciders will be served up by several of Las Vegas’ best restaurants and breweries. The festival begins at 5 p.m. at The Club’s indoor/outdoor festival grounds. Admission is a paltry $5 at the door.

If you’re not that familiar with any of the entertainers, let me tell you a bit about them. Singer and pianist Marcia Ball offers up her smoldering blend of southern boogie, roadhouse blues, heartfelt ballads and playful piano pounding singing tunes from her newest album, Peace, Love and BBQ, showcasing her broad repertoire of deep soul ballads to can’t-sit-still party songs.

Mixing vibrant instrumental pieces with simmering, scorching vocal numbers, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band is one of the most prolific modern New Orleans brass bands today. Established in 1977, the eight-piece band revolutionized the New Orleans brass band style by incorporating electric instrumentals into innovative blends of traditional New Orleans and modern jazz sounds. In 2006, The Dirty Dozen released their newest album, What’s Going On, their version of the entire 1971 Marvin Gaye landmark disc What’s Going On as a response to the devastation of Hurricane Katrina that struck New Orleans.

John Lee Hooker Jr. was born in Detroit with Delta blues-filled blood running through his Motown veins. The son of the great John Lee Hooker, he was exposed the life of the blues from a young age, performing in prestigious venues such as Detroit’s Fox Theatre with acclaimed musicians like Jimmy Reed by the time he was 16. Hooker Jr. was able to develop his own sound of blues mixed with modern, contemporary arrangements. Now, with five albums under his belt, John Lee Hooker Jr. has built upon his colorful past as he continues to distinguish himself as a contemporary “Bluesman.”

Ironing Board Sam, born Sammie Moore, learned to play the piano at an early age before forming his own band and in 1959. Without the regular legs to support his keyboard he improvised, using an ironing board stand and earning his name, “Ironing Board Sam.” In 1974, after moving to New Orleans, Sam was billed as The Eighth Wonder of the World, due to his ability to strap the keyboard around his shoulders and walk through the club as he played his tunes.

Local restaurants and vendors will be serving up some of Las Vegas’ best BBQ and more than one dozen brands of micro brewed beers and hard ciders will be available. The brews start at just $5 and, for those who cannot decide, the Brews Sampler Pack, offering eight-ounce samples of up to 10 different beers is available for just $20. Take it from me, this is a real fun event and the music, food and beer are all outstanding. Have a great time!

Abba Fans In For A Treat
If you’re a fan of Abba, you’ll be able to hear all of their great music when Abbacadabra performs at the Las Vegas Hilton June 12-14. This tribute show features 20 Abba songs that will have you dancing in the aisles and humming the music long after you leave the theater. Just don’t break into song if you stop to eat at one of the Hilton’s fine restaurants. Other diners may not appreciate it.

The shows begin at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 7 p.m. Sunday. Tickets  are $19.95, $29.95, $39.95 and $49.95 for VIP seating with personal meet-and-greet and a gift bag featuring an autographed photo, CD and live performance DVD.  Prices exclude tax and fees. To purchase, go to the Las Vegas Hilton box office, online at www.lvhilton.com, www.vegas.com, www.ticketmaster.com, or call the box office at 702-732-5755 or 800-222-5361. Now how hard is that?

Menopause: The Musical Finds A Home
There really is a god. Recently, Menopause: The Musical which had played to SRO audiences at the Las Vegas Hilton for the past few years, ended its run there and I had a hollow feeling in the pit of my stomach that it wouldn’t find another home in our town. But the cast has moved this very funny, brilliant show to the Luxor and although I’m not happy with its time slot (5:30 p.m. except on Tuesdays or weeks when Carrot Top is on vacation, when it will go at 8 p.m.) it remains in Las Vegas.
I have said it before and will say it again, “This show, pound for pound, is the best entertainment value you will find in Las Vegas. Period.” Add to the fact that Queen Emily — she with the magnificent voice — has joined the cast. If you like to laugh and we certainly need more laughter in our lives these days, do not miss this show. Even the guys will get a great kick out of it.

NORM: Garth Brooks has pal in high places.

Is Garth Brooks planning a Las Vegas homecoming of sorts?

The country superstar was spotted in the company of hotel developer Steve Wynn at SW Steakhouse at Wynn Las Vegas on Thursday night, further confirmation that Brooks has friends in high places too.

The sighting set off speculation that Wynn was courting the semi-retired star who broke records for both sales and concert attendance in the 1990s.

Back in January 1991, he packed 'em in at the Desert Inn (which Wynn bought and turned into Wynn Las Vegas and Encore). Tickets for Brooks shows went for $35.

CONCERT REVIEW: Santana

Santana offers more than just the hits: Nostalgia gives way to duets during Hard Rock showcase.

By MIKE WEATHERFORD/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Don't worry, the original hippie didn't sell out.

It was likened to Elton John's "The Red Piano" and billed as "A Trip Through the Hits." But "Supernatural Santana," Carlos Santana's new showcase at the Hard Rock Hotel, isn't any huge departure from what he's been doing in recent years. At this point in his career, why would you want it to be?

And one thing's for sure: You don't see any of the Caesars Palace divas calling for the legalization of marijuana — with the revenue earmarked for schools, of course.

Oh, sure, the 100-minute set might be a little shorter than longtime followers are used to. But only the most hard-core fan will complain they didn't get enough cowbell — or congas or timbales — from the 10-piece band to rattle their heads the rest of the night.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Mystery tops secrets of magic.
From: The LVRJ

If a masked magician exposed secrets on a UHF station in the woods and no one cared, did they make a sound?

School lets out this week, and magicians are looking forward to their busy season. David Copperfield plans three shows each Saturday in June. A new one called "Amazed" starts at the V Theater June 16. And no one worries that MyNetworkTV (KVMY-TV, Channel 21 locally) devoted a whole spring's worth of Mondays to "Magic's Biggest Secrets Finally Revealed."

What a difference 11 years makes. In late 1997, a Las Vegas magician named Valentino stepped away from his afternoon gig in "Viva Las Vegas" to become "The Masked Magician" on a Fox special.

It was 1971, and Tommy DeVito was cleaning houses for a living. One low day, he was scrubbing the country club house of a big shot's wife, when it leaked out in conversation Tommy had been the guitar player in the Four Seasons.

"She stood there looking at me. She was crying like she was my sister or my mother. She couldn't believe I was cleaning her house."

"I don't want you doing that anymore," she told him.

"What do you want me to do?" Tommy asked. "Go out and steal?! I'll clean your house."

Holly Madison’s weekend includes Peepshow, Pure — and a wardrobe malfunction. By: Robin Leach/Las Vegas Sun.

Platinum blonde Playboy beauty Holly Madison loves Twitter, and this weekend, she was busier than ever tweeting all her jam-packed activities. It was Holly’s first full weekend in Las Vegas after moving in full time to her new home at Planet Holly-wood!

I treated Holly and her friend Laura Croft to a “rich and famous” pizza at star chef Wolfgang Puck’s Spago in Caesars Palace shortly after midnight this morning after we had attended the 6th Anniversary Vegas magazine party at nearby Pure. In fact, the hungry twosome ordered up five different kinds of pizzas to sample, and one was boxed up to go for a through-the-night snack!

Venetian restaurant up for top honors — for bathroom.
BY: Amanda Finnegan/Las Vegas Sun.

The Venetian has won a slew of accolades over the years, including top awards like the AAA Five Diamond Award and Mobil Four Star Award. But soon the luxury property may be adding one of the most bizarre to its lengthy list.

The Venetian’s upscale Italian restaurant, Zeffirino Ristorante, is up for the award. It’s not for the food or the service or the ambiance, but the bathroom. The restaurant’s restroom is one of 10 finalists in the America’s Best Public Restroom contest, presented by Cincinnati-based Cintas Corporation.

Magic's a Drag at the Harmon Theater

Add one part Bette Midler, a dash of Dolly Parton and mix with the talents of David Copperfield and poof! you have “Magic’s a Drag” starring Cashetta, the Queen of Magic. “Magic’s a Drag” opens Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. at the Harmon Theater.

Cashetta gives magic a fabulous makeover as one of the only female impersonator magicians in the world. Her act includes cards that disappear and reappear in unlikely places and a gypsy rope illusion that rivals Harry Houdini’s famous escapes — with a twist. She even teaches an audience member, dressed in drag, to perform an illusion. And just wait to see what she does with a five-foot balloon. Cashetta relies heavily on her interaction with her audience, pulling them on stage to help with her illusions. The atmosphere is more of a party than a show.

Cashetta, aka Scott Weston, has headlined at the Crown & Anchor in Provincetown, Mass., for the past three seasons, at Cinema Paradiso in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Caroline’s Comedy Club on Broadway, Windstar Cruise Lines, Atlantis Events and tours internationally with her one “woman” show.

“Magic’s a Drag” replaces the highly successful “Lucky Cheng’s Dinner Caberet,” which ends its three-year engagement at the Harmon Theater on Feb. 14.

Tickets: $44.95 plus tax and processing fee for general admission
$59.95 plus tax and processing fee for VIP, which includes an all-you-can-drink wristband.

Rich Natole at the Harmon Theater.

“Voices of a Generation” from comic impressionist Rich Natole starts making audiences laugh May 15 at 2 p.m. at the Harmon Theater. Dozens of celebrity voices are showcased in this fast moving, very funny show. Audiences are guaranteed a good time laughing their way through Natole’s hysterical comedy impressions. Avid television and movie buffs will appreciate Natole’s pinpoint accuracy of their favorite stars of yesterday and today. Political junkies will enjoy his equal opportunity approach to spoofing their favorite (or least favorite) politicians.

Natole’s comic impressions cover the gamut from every president from John F. Kennedy to Barack Obama to celebrities such as Dr. Phil, Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Dustin Hoffman and Clint Eastwood. The comic impressario blazes through as many as 85 impressions from his 300-voice repertoire during a show that changes daily.

Natole comes to Vegas from Orlando, where he delighted corporate audiences for years before making the move to Las Vegas last October. Over the years, he has received rave reviews from The Hollywood Reporter (“A successful, multi-talented comic impressionist.”), the Los Angeles Times (“True comic capability…met with great laughter by young and old alike.”) and Variety (“Confident and likeable — he appeals to the audience.”). Seeing is believing in this incredible one-man show.

Get Ready
Australian pop group pays homage to Motown.

BY: Kiko Miyasato/Las Vegas Magazine.

On the heels of celebrating its 50th anniversary, the music of motown is still alive and well…and living in the Imperial Palace showroom via the Australian musical import, Human Nature. But let's backtrack just a bit.

Its history begins in 1959 in Detroit with a group of African-American singers, musicians and producers. Names like Berry Gordy, The Miracles, The Four Tops and The Supremes are synonymous with the musical movement. African-American artists crossed over to the mainstream and conquered the Billboard charts for more than a decade. Fast forward almost 50 years and the sound of Detroit emanates from the mouths of four white mates from Sydney, known as Human Nature. How can this be? Well, it's a testament to not only the sheer talent of the group but the power and relevance of the music itself.

Almost 20 years ago, high-school classmates Andrew and Michael Tierney, Toby Allen and Phil Burton started a doo-wop group, the 4Trax. The boys eventually signed to Sony Music Australia and changed their name to Human Nature. In 1996 the group released their first album, Telling Everybody, which has since been certified triple platinum. More than a decade later, Human Nature has nine albums under its belt, 17 top 40 hits and five top 10 hits, making them one of the best-selling artists in Australia.

Taking a step back from their own music, they decided to pay tribute to the music that influenced them in the very beginning – Motown. "We grew up on soul music," Allen said. "When we first got together as a group, all the people we were listening to – like The Four Tops and the Temptations – helped us get a great sense of our sound together as a group." In 2005 they released Reach Out, an album that peaked at No. 1 on the Australian charts and covered all the Motown favorites. Then Smokey Robinson got wind of them.

After meeting Robinson at a studio in the U.S., the group blew him away with their a cappella skills. "It was an instant gratification, an instant joy for me to see and hear them, because you don't hear that all the time," Robinson said. And now the world can share in the magic as Robinson presents Human Nature singing the classic hits of Motown during their resident show at Imperial Palace. "We're channeling the energy that made Motown so incredible," said Andrew Tierney. Adds Robinson, "A lot of people can sing, but they can't entertain you. A lot of people can dance, but they can't entertain you. These guys can sing and dance and they are entertainers, and that's what you can expect."

Dark Angel
Blurring the line between reality and imagination.

By Kate Silver/Las Vegas Magazine

It's 2 p.m. on a Tuesday afternoon, and the line is unrelenting. They wait patiently by the dozen, and despite the delay there are no looks of annoyance or frustrated sighs. That's because they're here buying tickets for Criss Angel Believe.

The anticipation level is high and for good reason. Combine the creative genius of Cirque du Soleil with the unabashed bravado of magician Criss Angel, and that line shouldn't have come as a surprise.

From the moment you enter the specially built theater the reality check begins. Large, framed, hologram-like pictures line the walls, changing before your very eyes, with shots of Angel and rabbits disappearing and reappearing. The message is clear: Things are not as they seem.

It's a haunting motif that's carried throughout Criss Angel Believe.

Angel is one of the world's most recognizable magicians. Devoted fans have watched him walk on water, escape an imploding building, successfully saw off body parts, levitate and more. The magical pretty boy made his television debut in 1994 in an hourlong special called Secrets. He went on to host Criss Angel Mindfreak at the World Underground Theatre in Times Square, which led to the A&E series.

Now, he's combined forces with Cirque du Soleil to create a show he's been dreaming of for the past 15 years. In Believe, Angel is a Victorian noble on a journey through a disparate world of light and dark, good and evil, real and imaginary. Along the way, he encounters an array of characters who are beautiful, spooky, surreal and often a combination of all three. The show relies on illusion with dance, acrobatics and the phenomenal sets and costumes for which Cirque is famous, all inside a custom-built theater within Las Vegas' very own pyramid – an appropriately mystical structure for such a mystical show.

Production designer Michael Curry, who created the costumes and props for the show, says he wishes he could go back in time and capture the wonder and surprise he felt when he first saw Believe.

"It's a little bit like seeing the shadow in your closet that really looks like a bogeyman, and then there's a moment at which you realize it's just a shadow," Curry said. "So we play on the fantasy."

Curry has worked on magic shows in the past, including Siegfried & Roy and David Copperfield. But this one, he says, is different.

"We've made attempts to modernize the theme of magic, not only the illusions but the context we present them in, and try to embed it in a story. That's not been done very much," he said.

Curry spent two years working on some of the show's puppets, which include multiple rabbits, a cockroach and even a leech…or so he says. Considering the premise of the show is based in illusion, it's hard to know if, well, anything is for certain.

"What you think you're seeing isn't really what you're seeing," Curry said. "This is what Believe is about."

Roar Shock
The stage version of the animated film opens eyes in Las Vegas
By: Jack Houston/Las Vegas Magazine

Life in the Pridelands is all sunshine and blue skies when Simba, the son of the reigning lion king, is presented to the animals of the African savanna. But his uncle, the truculent Scar, has devious intentions, arranging for the death of Simba's father, Mufasa, and accusing the young cub of the deed.

The story of Simba's subsequent exile, coming of age and return to his homeland is chronicled in The Lion King, the stage adaptation of Disney's beloved animated film. Fans of the movie will be quick to notice the differences between the two versions: a longer runtime (two and a half hours, including intermission), an expanded role for Nala, a female Rafiki and a few jokes tailored to a Las Vegas audience. Otherwise, the story follows much the same arc as the movie with Simba returning to conquer Scar and take his rightful place atop Pride Rock.

But the real star of the production is neither an animal nor the familiar songs of Elton John and Tim Rice but Julie Taymor, the director of the original Broadway musical, who created for The Lion King some of the best costumes this city has ever seen. Elephants, giraffes, antelopes, cheetahs and flocks of birds come alive, thanks to Taymor's innovative touches. She renders the main characters, too, in striking detail, reinventing the likes of Timon, Pumbaa and Zazu in ways only she could imagine.

Chuck Rounds' Las Vegas Entertainment News: June 2009

June is here!  School is out, and everyone wants a vacation…whether or not they can afford a vacation is another question, but nonetheless, we all want to get away.  Vegas (of course) is eager for everyone to come and get away here.  We want and need your tourist dollars.  Oddly enough, while Vegas sends out advertisements for people to visit our city, local ads encourage people to take a "Stay-cation" and remain in Vegas to enjoy all that the city has to offer.  The entire city has deals everywhere and all of the hotels and attractions are cheaper now than they have been in years.

Normally temperatures never reach 100 degrees until the month of June…and with one exception, it will happen again this year…and yes, it is true, it is a dry heat; and yes, that does make it more tolerable.  This is good and bad—it is as if you're standing in a convection oven, rather than a sauna.  Without lotion, the dry air will suck out any moisture that you may have in your body, and you will burn faster here than a day at the beach.  Summer in Vegas is hot…pools and parties are the main tour de force for the season, and the entertainment usually brings a lot of wonderful surprises throughout the few months ahead.  Schools are out all over the country.  College-aged people will come to Vegas and try to emulate the commercials and the mystique of this town—usually without the success and panache for which they would hope.  Sometimes these folks think that normal rules of society don't apply to this town…trust me though; drunk and disorderly and drunk driving will still get you thrown in jail.  Families will come in, have a good time, but feel that there is less and less that the entire family can do on the Strip. (Actually, there are a lot of things that the family can do, but most tourists don't venture away from the casinos to find them.)

Entetainment abounds in Las Vegas, and June is a busy month…

The Burlesque Hall of Fame weekend will be at the Orleans Hotel from June 5th to 7th. It is a showcase for over 100 of the world's top burlesque acts from international entertainers.  The Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend attracts outstanding artists, both exotic and mainstream.   The weekend will also include a Striptease Reunion, now in its 52nd year, at which newer performers can learn tricks of the trade from surviving superstars of the 1940s, '50s and '60s.

CineVegas will be holding its annual film festival at the Palms again this year from the 10th to the 15th.  This even has grown every year, (now in its 11th year,) and draws some of the top names in the entertainment industry to Vegas.  It has become one of the major "Hollywood" events here in Las Vegas. Opening night will feature the film "Saint John of Las Vegas" and eight "Jackpot Premieres". Closing night will include Bobcat Goldthwait's film "World's Greatest Dad," starring Robin Williams. Festival fans can watch the trailers for many of this year's films online at www.cinevegas.com.

After approximately six weeks, Trent Carlini has closed the doors on his production, "Evolution," at the Steve Wyrick Theatre.  It is a shame…I saw the show, but never got around to reviewing it.  I thought it was going to be around a bit longer and didn't recognize the urgency.  A foolish move on my part…I should have seen the writing on the wall immediately.  All in all, it was a karaoke version of the King.  Carlini has a good look, but certainly not the charisma to carry a show.  He was great when he did merely a segment in "Legends in Concert," but since then he has been pushing the one-man show format. He did the "Dream King" at the Sahara for several months last year and has attracted national exposure on the reality show, "The Next Best Thing," but it hasn't been enough to get him to deliver inspiring performances.  Most of his time was spent changing costumes, when he should have been spending time making a connection with the audience.  His other undoing was probably his ticket prices…the average ticket price was around $100.  Are you kidding?  That's more expensive than some of the Cirque shows in town with none of the production value.  At best, it was a $35 show…  At that price he might have been able to generate some business.  It is rumored that he is just suspending the show while he competes on "America's Got Talent"…I'm not sure I'm buying that line, but okay, we'll see…

Award-winning comedian Kathy Griffin will perform her witty comedy routine inside the Mandalay Bay Theater Friday, July 3.  Griffin has been making audiences laugh for years discussing Hollywood gossip and celebrity blunders.  A multi-faceted performer with a rapid-fire wit, Griffin has hosted the Bravo A-List Awards for the past two years and won the Vanguard Award at the 2009 GLAAD Media Awards.  In June 2008, Griffin released her first comedy album "For Your Consideration," featuring tracks such as "Straight Guys Wake Up!" and "Hi Barbara Walters."  The album was nominated for a Grammy® for "Best Comedy Album."  Currently, Griffin is lending her voice to the animated adventure film "Around the World in 50 Years in 3D."

Earl Turner and Lani Misalucha are now getting into their groove at the Shimmer Cabaret inside the Hilton.  These are two talented performers that were somewhat thrust together to put a show together.  After some minor bumps getting started, the pair has settled in nicely.  The new show, "Voices" is a great break from some of the over-produced productions in town and a chance to see some really great talent.

Charo is set to have a new show opening soon.  She will be taking over the showroom at the Riviera where "An Evening at La Cage" had been playing for the past couple of decades. Her show is set to open in mid-July, and it should be a lot of fun.  Beyond all of the quirkiness that is attributed to Charo, she is an extremely talented woman that is quite capable of carrying an evening of entertainment.  I look forward to her arrival.
