Fabulous Las Vegas welcome sign now is historic.
Strip icon makes it onto the national register.

By SCOTT WYLAND/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

The iconic sign that has greeted motorists entering the Strip's south end for a half a century is officially historic.

The "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada" sign has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This designation comes in a year that marks the sign's 50th anniversary.

"This sign is one of the most recognizable images associated with Nevada and its tourism industry," said Ron James, Nevada Historic Preservation officer, in a written statement.

THEATER CHAT: Mandalay Bay's 'Lion King' magical stage production.

By Anthony Del Valle.
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Watching "The Lion King" at its Friday Mandalay Bay opening, I was struck by how much this show celebrates theatrical conventions. It's all about telling a story through stage fakery. You're not likely to look at it and say, "What a movie this would make!" or "What a TV show!" — at least not this version — because its beauty is so uniquely stage bound. It's the sort of experience that can get you hooked on theater, because it weaves a magic that only live performance can spin.

I remember the groans in some circles when Disney Productions announced it would be bring their 1994 animated hit to Broadway. Was Disney going to turn Broadway into its own brand of wholesome muck? But theater lovers were stunned when Disney picked Julie Taymor to be in charge. Here was an artist widely recognized in New York for her creative abilities with visuals (puppets especially) but who never had had a major show. Could it be that Disney's bucks were going to be used to improve Broadway? — and give a career to a major but struggling visionary?

Smokey Robinson throws support behind Australia's Human Nature.
By Mike Weatherford/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Yes, it's tricky to be a reformed Australian boy band, basically starting over from scratch in the United States because no one has heard of you.

But you have a couple of things on our your side. For starters, "We're sort of finding people are charmed by the Australian accent," says Toby Allen, one-fourth of Human Nature.

It also helps to have Smokey Robinson at your side — literally — talking to reporters at a press event to promote Human Nature's shot at Las Vegas stardom, which launches Saturday at the Imperial Palace.

The ever-gracious Robinson speaks as though the pleasure is all his.

Steve's Las Vegas Quickies:

"Defending the Caveman" at Excalibur has shifted to 4 p.m. daily, with extra evening shows at 7 Fridays and Saturdays.

Tropicana afternoon star Dirk Arthur has moved his "Xtreme Magic" into a 7 p.m. time slot, so his matinee moves to 4:10 p.m. (Yes, that's the advertised time. Talk about honesty. Wouldn't want people to quit the slots 10 minutes early, would we?)

Carmen Electra finally gets into a Las Vegas show as the guest star of "MGM Grand's Crazy Horse Paris" July 8-13. Electra almost starred in "Lumiere," which never opened in 2001. And she wisely backed out of "The Beauty of Magic" at Planet Hollywood in 2007; Pam Anderson replaced her in the dud.

The Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens has unveiled its summer tribute. The features: sunflowers, a lemonade stand, a 42-foot-high Ferris wheel and an aviary with exotic birds.

The Palms' Rain nightclub will be heating up June 6 when 17 local men walk the runway at the 10th Annual Fire & Rain Firefighter Bachelor Auction. Fire station dinners will also be available for auction and raffle. Proceeds go to the Firefighters of Southern Nevada Burn Foundation. Doors open at 6 p.m. To purchase tickets visit www.theburnfoundation.org. For more information call 702-416-6767.

The Mirage marquee has a new addition: a video announcing the arrival of "Beacher's Madhouse." Producer Jeff Beacher and his dozen or so speciality acts are booked once a month in a new 1,200-seat theater, starting this fall. Beacher was back in the news earlier this month for threatening to sue Luxor headliner Criss Angel over a cat. Beacher's attorney, Robert Reynolds, wrote a letter to Angel saying Beacher gave the cat to a female friend to cat-sit while both of his parents battled serious illnesses and later died. Beacher wants the cat back.

The first show in Danny Gans' former theater didn't make it to the end.

During Whoopi Goldberg's closing minutes, a male patron suffered an apparent seizure near the front of the Encore Theater, according to several witnesses.

The Golden Nugget will break some new ground by booking standards singer Steve Tyrell during a Gordie Brown vacation June 12-15.

Lance Burton's return to the stage at the Monte Carlo has been delayed until June 23. He's on the mend after breaking a bone in his right foot during his May 7 show.

The way-off Strip Hash House A Go Go recently had a segment of Travel Channel's series "Man v. Food" filmed there. "Man v. Food" follows Adam Richman as he travels the country in search of restaurants that serve the biggest and best local meals.

Las Vegas Hilton headliner Barry Manilow, who will appear May 22-24 and 28-30, has released a new DVD, "Barry Manilow: In Concert – The Legendary 1978 Concert at the Greek Theatre," which is only available at www.Starz.bz/,

The Las Vegas Hilton's "Cool By The Pool" events has returned with 2-for-1 drinks, $2 shrimp cocktails, live entertainment from 5:30-8 p.m., and daily drawings at 7 p.m.

The Flamingo's adult-only Go Pool is open for the summer and features Tan Ambassadors, lush cabanas and hotel packages. "The Girls Next Door" and "Dancing with the Stars" beauty Holly Madison recently spent a Saturday afternoon at the Go Pool and the Rio's topless-optional Sapphire Pool.

The Rampart Casino has unveiled a brand new high-tech electric vehicle technology in the valet parking area, making it the first-ever casino property to provide customers with a low-cost, alternative fueling source for electric vehicles. The Coulomb electric vehicle (EV) charging system, installed by EV-Charge America, offers electric vehicle drivers a place to plug-in. There's no service cost for casino guests.

Rod Stewart will perform on the MGM Grand Garden Arena stage on Saturday, Aug. 1 as part of a limited engagement North American tour. Fans will hear memorable hits from Stewart's four-decade career. Tickets are $50, $100 and $150; call Ticketmaster at 800-745-3000.

The Main Bar at Jerry's Nugget is offering $1 bottles of Pacifico beer (ooh, that's my favorite!) 24/7 daily throughout the summer, starting June 1.

Although bingo has become the red-headed stepchild of the casino industry in recent years, current hard times are bringing it back into the fold, at least briefly. The Flamingo Las Vegas and its president, Don Marrandino, have been developing a reputation for creativity and it's come to our attention that the Flamingo recently hosted a three-day invitational bingo tournament. It climaxed with a "coverall" game in which $250,000 went to the first player who could cover all the numbers in 50 balls or less. Not only were tourney players comped to multiple-night stays at Total Rewards-enabled Strip casinos, they received something near and dear to every bingo player's heart: free daubers. Our managing editor and resident bingo-room critic is kicking himself for having missed out on the action.

Get this for a wild promotion: Book any room online at Planet Hollywood and get a free bottle of wine, champagne, whiskey, rum, gin, vodka, or tequila off the special "Drinks Are on Us" menu per night. Yes, you read that right: A free bottle every day of your stay.

The Thin White Duke is now playing the Strip, Legends in Concert having added a David Bowie impersonator to its rotating lineup. He joins a corps of tribute acts that includes Britney Spears and Celine Dion impersonators, as well as — who else? — Elvis Presley.

Every Friday throughout the month of June all drinks in all bars at South Point will be $1 only from 4 p.m.-10 p.m.

Alexis Park is home to a new comedy show which debuts tonight. Las Vegas Comedy Show with Joe Lowers is scheduled to perform Tues-Sat at 9 p.m. Tickets are $29.95 (includes one free drink). Must be 21+.

Stripburger, the outdoor upscale fast-food joint attached to Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba on the Strip, has a daily happy hour and reverse happy hour with select $2 tap beers, $2 frozen lime margaritas, $2 mini burgers, and $2 fries from 4-7 p.m. & again from 11 p.m. (good for late-nite munchies — their food's yummy!)

The Rockhouse Bar & Nightclub,
(located in front of the Imperial Palace on the Strip), is putting a happier spin on our economic woes by presenting "Summer of Recession,", a weekly calendar of events for budget-conscious party-goers featuring nightly drink specials, including: "Mandatory Mondays" (industry night — show local ID for 2-for-1 Bud Light Limes and industry business card for $100 bottles); "Going Out of Business" Tuesdays (enjoy bottles starting at $25, 2-for-$5 assorted canned beers, and $5 Cuervo margaritas and Jager bombs); "Ladies Night" Thursdays (complimentary drinks for chicks 10:30 p.m. to midnight); "Ultra-Dive Bar" weekends (2-for-1 well drinks, domestic bottles, and $5 shots 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; no cover before 10 p.m.); and "Sin City Sundays," with DJ Sincere ($5 money shots, $5 your call Ketel One drinks, no cover before 10 p.m.) Party on!

According to Robin Leach's "Luxe Life" blog, Las Vegas' Crazy Girls will be taking their brand of sexy on the road in the form of a new chain of Crazy Girls-themed cafés. Apparently, producer-owner Norbert Aleman intends to debut the concept in New Orleans' French Quarter, with future venues planned for Reno, Atlantic City, and up to another eight cities across the nation. The bar/restaurants will feature dancers strutting their stuff atop the bar and customer tables, plus other entertainment, including female vocalists.

The mysterious new suites at the Monte Carlo will allegedly debut soon. In the meantime, here's another preview: Hotel 32 tour.

Columnist Robin Leach reports that Jeff Beacher will bring his Madhouse Costume Ball to a ballroom-turned-1,200-seat theater at The Mirage beginning in early October. Beacher has been touring his show – which includes everything from little people impersonators to huge pink gorillas and giant bunny rabbits – across the country and has dates scheduled in California, Florida and Georgia until the end of July. Before he took his show on the road, Beacher enjoyed a three-year run at The Joint at the Hard Rock.

Through Sept. 30, Wynn Las Vegas and Encore are offering $75 "resort credits" on select stays. Your two-night (or more) reservation must be prepaid to receive the credit, which may not be redeemed for retail, casino play, gratuities, or tax. If you book a suite, not only do you qualify for the credit but also for private car service to and from the airport, two spa passes per day, Internet access, and long distance and local calls for up to $25 per day each.

It's been a week since the opening of The Lion King at Mandalay Bay and the press response is overwhelmingly favorable. Stiffs & Georges has a summary of the local papers' reaction: four raves and two mixed notices but not a pan in the bunch. Approbation of Julie Taymor's staging is unanimous, although a few critics think the show could be tighter, while a couple of others chafe at the Elton John/Tim Rice tunes. But, on the whole, a "win" for MBay.

Every Saturday in June, the Gold Coast will draw 10 names to spin a cash wheel and win up to $10,000 in cash. Both slot and table game winners can begin earning entries on Monday, and double entries will be awarded on Fridays. The Saturday drawings will take place at 8:15 p.m., and players must be present to win.

Singing sensation Robin Thicke and Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Chaka Khan will perform at the NHL Awards on June 18 at the Palms. Also attending will be Snoop Dogg, Michael Buble and actors William Fichtner, Tricia Helfer and Lauren Holly.

This June, Hawaiian Tropic Zone inside Miracle Mile Shops features the tantalizing Lei-Monade cocktail, a refreshing libation perfect for visitors looking to flee the sizzling summer heat. Boasting a flirtatious pink hue, the sinfully delicious cocktail is a swirl of Finlandia Grapefruit Vodka, Patron Citronge liqueur, cranberry juice and fresh lemon sour mix. Served up by one of the beautiful and bikini clad Hawaiian Tropic Zone girls, the Lei-Monade is sure to drive taste buds wild.

Negotiations are being finalized for Terry Fator to host a new TV show direct from his theater at The Mirage. Vegas DeLuxe has learned exclusively that discussions have centered on a one-hour special to “test the waters with the concept” and to “gauge ratings response.” If all goes well, it will be rolled out as a weekly series for next year.

Mandalay Bay Beach is bringing back last year's Dive-In movies series with a schedule right through mid-September. Don your flip-flops, throw down a beach towel, and enjoy the following R-rated movies (no cover but 2-drink minimum applies):

Friday, June 12 – Role Models

Friday, June 26 – Tropic Thunder

Friday, July 17 – You Don't Mess With The Zohan

Friday, July 24 – Baby Mamma

Friday, Aug. 14 – Step Brothers

Friday, Aug. 28 – The Big Lebowski

Friday, Sept. 11 – American Pie

Friday, Sept. 18 – Superbad

NORM: Fans to pay tribute at Gans memorial.

Speakers for Danny Gans' memorial today will run the gamut from Steve and Elaine Wynn to Mayor Oscar Goodman to entertainers Donny and Marie Osmond.

The 3 p.m. service will be held in the 1,600-seat Encore Theater, Gans' former showroom.

The celebrity vocal impressionist will be remembered for his grit that lifted him from a career-ending baseball injury to a 13-year headliner run as one of the top acts in Las Vegas.

He died at his home of unknown causes on May 1. He was 52.

The Clark County coroner has not released an official cause of death and said it could be weeks before toxicology reports are made public.

Originally announced as an invitation-only gathering, the memorial will include some fans, firefighters and police who were offered complimentary tickets this week.

The Web site Showtickets4locals.com, co-owned by Gans and his manager Chip Lightman and other partners, offered the tickets several days this week via e-mail.

Original song is Gordie Brown’s tribute to Danny Gans.
BY: John Katsliomentes/Las Vegas Sun.

The moment arrives without warning, and it surfaces whenever the mood strikes Gordie Brown. But there is a point in his show at the Golden Nugget when he speaks of the late Danny Gans, softly saying that Gans will be terribly missed and was one of the true pioneers among Las Vegas entertainers. Then Brown’s voice shifts to its power gear and sings the Louis Armstrong favored by Gans, “What a Wonderful World.”

Brown sang the song during a show last week, dropping it suddenly into his fast-paced repertoire just after a quickie Elvis Presley medley.

“I’m just doing it out of respect for Danny,” Brown says. “He really was a great entertainer and showman. I’ve done it only when the mood strikes me in the show, in different spots.”

Memorial service reveals real Danny Gans.
Family, fans and fellow performers gather to bid entertainer farewell.

By MIKE WEATHERFORD/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

An impressionist, by nature of the craft, makes himself nearly a blank canvas to create other personas. But it was Danny Gans, the offstage man, who was revealed in a memorial service Thursday.

Friends, fans and fellow performers gathered in the Encore Theater, where Gans performed about 12 weeks as the resort's signature headliner before he died at home on May 1 at age 52. A cause of death has not been established, pending toxicology test results from the Clark County coroner's office.

Donny Osmond, the one entertainer to address the crowd of 1,048, spoke amid reflections from three pastors — two in person, one on video — and poignant memories from Gans' three children: Andrew, Amy and Emily.

NORM: Family never knew of any health woe.

Danny Gans' family never had an inkling that he had a serious health problem.

Not once?

"Never!" his son, Andrew, 19, said firmly, after Thursday's memorial for his father at the Encore Theater. It came as a complete shock, said Andrew in the first interview granted by a family member since Danny Gans' death.

"We knew he had high blood pressure but was taking something to control that, and he had to watch what he ate."

NORM:DUKING IT OUT

Annie Duke has recruited 20 Joan Rivers impersonators to go head-to-head with poker players in a charity event next week at the Hard Rock Hotel.

Before beating Duke in Donald Trump's "Celebrity Apprentice" earlier this month, the trash-talking Rivers raised the hackles of the poker nation by referring to poker players as "white trash"and "mafia."

The event, which will feature Duke and longtime Rivers impersonator Frank Marino together on the red carpet, will benefit Duke's pet project, Refugees International.

Rivers sued Marino, the lead of "An Evening at La Cage" for 20-plus years, for $5 million in 1986 for impersonating her.

The case was settled out of court. "The only thing she was able to copyright was 'Can we talk?" said Marino.

The red carpet begins at 5 p.m. with a lineup of top poker pros.

The public can participate in the $200 buy-in, No-Limit Texas Hold 'em tourney.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Campy musical reopening.

Kathi Glist was watching "America's Got Talent" when the contestant known as Queen Emily rocked the house with "Chain of Fools.

"Her first revelation was, "Who knows the original lyrics anymore?" In Glist's world, as co-producer of "Menopause The Musical," the Aretha Franklin classic is forever known as "Change of Life."

Her second thought was, "If she doesn't win, we've got to put her in the show." Emily (David) became the first star ever to receive special billing in any run of "Menopause" in the show's final five weeks at the Las Vegas Hilton, where it had run since early 2006.

Ticket sales perked up for Emily, who again will be onboard when the campy musical reopens at Luxor on Tuesday, sharing the Atrium showroom with Carrot Top and "Fantasy."

Passion gives Dian Diaz lounge longevity.

By John Przybys
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Passion gives Dian Diaz lounge longevity.

Las Vegas is a fickle town where buildings, people and even trends in entertainment come and go with whiplashlike regularity.

And that, in large part, is why Dian Diaz's 10-years-and-counting tenure at Bellagio's Fontana Lounge is so impressive.

But it's no surprise, either. Diaz brings to her shows not just ample talent, a longshoreman's work ethic and wide-ranging versatility — audience members might hear anything from slow ballads to high-energy dance tunes to Latin-flavored pop — but a personality that turns casual visitors into loyal fans.

HEIDI'S PICKS by Heidi Knapp Rinella/LVRJ

CJ'S TEXAS BARBEQUE
7865 W. Sahara Ave.; 233-0190

This is no-frills barbecue that might remind you of those Texas roadside places with the picnic tables and stock tanks of soft drinks and meats ordered by the pound and served on paper. The barbecue includes very good brisket, ribs and turkey; as for the sides, the macaroni and cheese was the best of the bunch. Oh, and we liked the Shiner Bock. (11/23/07)
Overall: B+ $

LA FOCACCIA
8975 S. Eastern Ave.; 650-9800

There were some minor problems with our entrees — spinach and ricotta ravioli with tomato sauce, browned butter and sage, and chicken pizzaola — but our starters were nothing short of spectacular, owing to La Focaccia's excellent focaccia. The focaccia in the bread basket, served with olive oil and balsamic vinegar, and focaccia-based bruschetta with its tomatoes and basil, roasted garlic and tapenade (and also the mozzarella and roasted red peppers) were so good, we plan to return for the pizzalike special focaccias. (4/24/09)
Overall: B+ $$

ORIGIN INDIA
4480 Paradise Road; 734-6342

I loved the service, atmosphere — even the ease of access and parking — at Origin India, but especially the food, of which we sampled the Dahi Ke Kebab (shrimp in garlic sauce), Lhasooni Jhinga (deep-fried patties of yogurt cheese), Murg Lehsooni Kebab (tandoori chicken with garlic), Gosht Dahiwala (lamb cooked with yogurt and a cashew sauce) and, for dessert, a carrot cigar. (10/6/06)
Overall: A $$

THE STERLING BRUNCH
Bally's Steakhouse, Bally's, 3645 Las Vegas Blvd. South; 967-7999

We thought the food at the venerable Sterling Brunch was as good as ever but were more than a little turned off by the clumsily engineered seating system differentiating high rollers from those who are not. But if you're the former or a highly tolerant member of the latter, and if you like roasted half-lobsters, lobster bisque, pepper-and-mint-crusted rack of lamb, desserts, salads, fruits and pastries, you'll probably feel right at home. (5/8/09)
Overall: A (if you're a high roller)  B- (if you're not ) $$$$

NORM: Local bullfights will be bloodless.

Cheers of "¡Ole!" will be echoing through crowds at the South Point Arena come September.

The city that prides itself in offering a bold buffet of entertainment is adding bullfighting — the bloodless kind.

Organizers are planning a mid-week announcement on what is believed to be the first bloodless bullfights in Las Vegas

They will be held over six days, starting Sept. 14 at the South Point Arena, where the announcement will be made at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

A publicist said organizers believe it has been more than 40 years since bullfights were held in Las Vegas.

The matador lineup includes Mexico's Eulalio Lopez, better known as "El Zotoluco." He has been a featured bullfighter at Tijuana's bullring.

The first dates will be held Sept. 14-15, a Monday and Tuesday, leading into Mexican Independence Day festivities on the 16th. The second run will be Sept. 27-30.

With Captain Buffett, it’s not entirely wastin’ away again at the MGM Grand.
By: John Katsliomentes/Las Vegas Sun

I expected flip-flops out of Jimmy Buffett. He sings about them, having blown out one on a pop top, so I thought he’d wear them last night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. He didn’t. Buffett traipsed out in bare feet. I’ve known two other artists to have walked onstage sans footwear: genre-defying guitar great Ottmar Liebert, and the late Ronnie Van Zant of Lynryd Skynyrd. But it’s a safe bet neither wore bright-orange T-shirts and tangerine-splashed, dark-blue beach shorts to any gig they headlined.

Buffett did. No wardrobe changes for the star, either, even during the 15-minute intermission of a 2 ½-hour event that was equal parts beach party, rock concert and (for thousands of fans) costume contest.

Manilow discusses fan club concert and Hilton plans.
By: Robin Leach/Las Vegas Sun

Recording superstar and Hilton headliner Barry Manilow says he faces two dilemmas, and he might not solve the more pressing one until he walks onstage this weekend. From Friday through Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, Barry plays host to the annual International Barry Manilow Fan Club Convention at the Hilton.

Thousands of fans are traveling here from across the U.S. and Canada and as far away as Britain and Australia. Barry knows they will be here to listen to his incredible collection of hits, but instead he wants to treat them to a special performance of his personal favorite album Here at the Mayflower, which critics have hailed as the finest album of his career.

Gang of (almost) doppelgangers.
‘Legends in Concert’ at Harrah’s a tribute revue with some real talent.

By: Joe Brown/Las Vegas Sun

There’s one show on the Las Vegas Strip at which the farther away you’re seated from the performers, the better.

At Harrah’s Showroom, “Legends in Concert” offers a buffet of showbiz knockoffs, close-enough simulations of a handful of pop music stars. But sitting close-up serves only to disturb whatever fragile illusion the impersonators manage to create.

The “Legends” company is a mini-industry, supplying impostors to six cities, including Atlantic City, N.J., and Branson, Mo., rotating casts from a roster of nearly 100 impersonators, including at least five Elvii. The current lineup at Harrah’s features look- and sound-alikes of James Brown, Britney Spears, David Bowie, the Temptations and (always) Elvis Presley; the most recent cast featured Jay Leno, Tom Jones and Whitney Houston.

Big Elvis: Big man, big voice.

But the biggest thing about Pete ‘Big Elvis’ Vallee is the 500 pounds of him that are no longer there, thanks to old-fashioned diet and exercise and the above-and-beyond dedication of friends.

By: Brendan Buhler/Las Vegas Sun

The first time you see him, on the sign, he’s a cartoon, an apple-bellied goof in a gold-studded white jumpsuit, tall black hair, a guitar and gold sunglasses.

Big Elvis, the sign says.

He’s the free weekdays lounge show at Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall & Saloon, just across the Strip from Caesars Palace. Go into the lounge and settle into a chair out of granddad’s rec room for the three o’clock show.

Big Elvis’ intro music is “Thus Spake Zarathustra,” better known as the ascending theme from “2001: A Space Odyssey” — ba baa baaaa BAA-BUM bum-bum bum-bum bum-bum.

Cashing in on History.
The past is present at the Rio during the 40th annual World Series of Poker.

BY: Paul Szydelko/Las Vegas Magazine

Forgive even the most stoic players attending the World Series of Poker at the Rio for enjoying a wave of nostalgia this summer. After all, this is the 40th year poker players have gathered in Las Vegas to compete.

A gallon of gasoline cost 36 cents, a first-class stamp cost six cents and Richard Nixon was in the White House in 1970, when the first modest WSOP was held. Benny Binion invited the seven top poker players in the country to his casino in downtown Las Vegas to decide the best.

The late Johnny Moss was voted the top player and went on to win the WSOP's championship events in 1971 and 1974. Doyle Brunson, winner of 10 bracelets, including Main Events in 1976-77, was there at the beginning and continues to draw cards and attention at the WSOP.

Brunson is expected to be part of the first invitation-only, no-limit hold 'em free-roll event featuring prior Main Event champions, to be held May 31-June 1. A commemorative Binion's Cup, a restored red '70 Corvette and bragging rights as the champion of champions will be at stake during the event, to be broadcast on ESPN on Aug. 4.

Also in honor of the 40th anniversary milestone, a $40,000-buy-in, no-limit hold 'em event has been added to the schedule, the second of 57 bracelet events. The second most-expensive event of the WSOP, set to get under way on May 28, is expected to draw "the best players in the world and a produce a final table for the ages," WSOP Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack said.

The inaugural PokerPalooza, July 2-5, featuring interactive and social elements as well as poker and lifestyle exhibitors, will add to the festive atmosphere of the WSOP.

Other changes this year: a revised Hall of Fame nomination and selection process, featuring online fan submissions; a bigger spotlight on bracelet ceremonies, scheduled for 2 p.m. each day after the conclusion of an event; a written, real-time log of all warnings and penalties issued to players.

The Main Event, to get under way on July 3, will continue until the final nine players are determined. The November Nine will resume play on Nov. 7, with the heads-up final on Nov. 10 broadcast the same day on ESPN.

Boosted by television coverage and Internet play, the stakes have soared and the game's popularity has exploded. Last year, Denmark's Peter Eastgate outlasted 6,843 other players to win the Main Event and $9.2 million. Scotty Nguyen took home nearly $2 million in the prestigious $50,000-buy-in H.O.R.S.E. event. A total of 58,720 entries from 124 nations participated last year.

"Whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned pro, this is the best year ever to come to the WSOP," Pollack said. While fondly recalling the game's legends, players are always anticipating what the next big deal will bring.

Dazzling Effects.
Production engages diverse audiences with varied acts.

Step into the Jubilee! Theatre at Bally's, and it's as though you've sashayed back to the 1950s, when the showgirl and Las Vegas entertainment were as intertwined as the feathers in her headdress.

Donn Arden's Jubilee! is a delightful tribute and celebration of a culture that is truly iconic to this town. There are beautiful women (with their, ahem, naturalness showing through many of the acts), handsome men, elaborate costumes, dazzling sets and a sense of history – not something you'll find in most Las Vegas shows.

The show is divided into four acts: "Showtime!," "Samson and Delilah," "Titanic" and "The Finale," which is a tribute to Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. Audience members should learn to time their blinking properly: With 100 different sets and backdrops and nine to 11 costume changes per cast member per show, it's easy to miss snippets here and there.

Be sure and keep the eyes peeled during "Samson and Delilah." In addition to the men in studded thongs, you'll want to see the giant, steel-framed bull's head that was made even more famous by its appearance in Rocky IV. And the Titanic replica is equally impressive. The iceberg collision scene involves 5,000 gallons of water inundating the stage, as pyrotechnics engulf the giant ship.

Shark Reef Aquarium Successfully Breeds Sandbar Sharks

Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay welcomed four new residents, two female and two male Sandbar shark pups, on Friday, March 13.  The new additions averaged 54 centimeters in length and weighed one kilogram at birth.

The female Sandbar shark who gave birth resides in Shark Reef Aquarium’s 1.3-million-gallon Sunken Shipwreck exhibit with 11 other Sandbar sharks.  Once the pregnancy was confirmed by the facility’s animal care staff last October, she was transferred to the on-site Husbandry Center.  The shark pups were born five months later.

“This is a very rare occurrence,” said Adrienne Rowland, the facility’s director.  “To our knowledge, captive breeding and birthing in the United States for this species only has happened successfully at one other facility.”

While not endangered, Sandbar shark populations in the wild are declining partly because of overfishing.  These bottom-dwelling sharks are found in the shallow coastal waters in the temperate and tropical zones of the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans.

The Sandbar shark pups are currently on display in a special exhibit located in the Gallery section of Shark Reef Aquarium.   The shark pups will be available for viewing through July 6, at which time they will be moved to the Husbandry Center until they are mature enough to be introduced into one of the facility’s larger exhibits with sharks of the same species.

The shark pups join an impressive group of animals at Shark Reef Aquarium, a 90,560-square-foot, predator-based aquarium – the only one of its kind in North America.

Since its debut in 2000, Shark Reef Aquarium has become a must-see Las Vegas attraction and educational facility, where adults and children alike can enjoy and learn about more than 2,000 divinely dangerous animals including a rare Komodo Dragon, a Giant Pacific Octopus, sharks, crocodiles and piranhas.

Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay is open daily from 10 a.m.  Ticket prices are $16.95 for adults and $10.95 for children; children four and under are free.  Nevada residents with a valid ID receive a discount on admission – $13.95 for adults and $8.95 for children five and older.

For more information, visit www.mandalaybay.com, www.sharkreef.com or call (702) 632-4555.

Holmes, Anton, Allen and Nievera in VOCAL SOUP at the Suncoast – June 19-21.

Long-time friends and performers Clint Holmes, Susan Anton, Domenick Allen and Martin Nievera combine their talents onstage for the first time in Vocal Soup at the Suncoast Showroom, June 19, 20 and 21.

The 90-minute showcase of solo performances, duets and group numbers will leave fans wanting more as the stars of Vocal Soup fulfill a shared dream of rekindling the Las Vegas tradition of entertainers coming together in an “anything can happen” atmosphere. The show will feature a variety of musical genres, including rock ‘n’ roll, hits from Foreigner, popular songs and standards, Broadway classics and originals, including the title song “Vocal Soup.” In addition, special guest Vincent Falcone — pianist and conductor for Frank Sinatra — will perform and conduct during a segment of the show dedicated to the music of “Ol’ Blue Eyes.”

Each an accomplished performer, Holmes, Anton, Allen and Nievera bring their individual vocal ranges and standout showmanship skills together for a rare group performance. Holmes, known for his powerful voice, magnetic stage presence and success in theater, enjoyed a six-year run in Clint Holmes at Harrah’s, during which readers of the Las Vegas Review-Journal named him Las Vegas’ best singer. A charismatic performer with a smooth style, Holmes had a Top 10 smash hit with “Playground In My Mind (My Name Is Michael).” He’s currently working on a theater project called JAM.

Susan Anton is known as one of the most enduring and versatile performers in show business, having achieved fame on Broadway, the big screen and in numerous television shows, including Night Court and Murder She Wrote. Anton, with her beautiful and free-spirited style, spent more than five years as special guest star with the Great Radio City Music Hall Spectacular and its renowned Rockettes at the Flamingo Hilton on the Strip.

Holmes and Anton, whose bond of friendship has spanned two decades, will perform alongside their friends Domenick Allen and Martin Nievera. Rock ‘n’ roll legend Allen is a former member of the multi-platinum rock group Foreigner, known best for such hits as “I Want To Know What Love Is,” “Double Vision” and “Cold As Ice.” A professional actor, singer and musician, Allen also toured the world for four years with the famed pianist Liberace and appeared on the London stage in several productions. He co-starred with Helen Reddy in the musical Blood Brothers on Broadway and was a regular on the daytime soap opera Days of Our Lives.

Recording and television star Martin Nievera, who has 15 gold hits in Asia and is regarded as “The Concert King” and a heartthrob in his native Philippines, has performed at the Golden Nugget and other Las Vegas venues. He has dazzled crowds with his diverse repertoire, including his signature “On the Right Track,” Broadway medleys and his swing rendition of Michael Jackson songs.

The American Superstars show at the Stratosphere Casino Hotel and Tower has re-introduced a Britney Spears tribute with Abby Galloway filling the role, announced American Casino & Entertainment Properties officials.

“Britney Spears. Some people love her. Others love to hate her. Say what you will, Britney Spears is entertaining, and from what I have seen she is capable of pulling off a comeback,” said Mark Callas, who produces American Superstars with his Springtime Productions partner, Donny Moore. “We had a Britney Spears tribute in the show last year, but we decided to go in a different direction. We decided to bring on Abby Galloway as Britney Spears because there is an energetic fan base for Ms. Spears’ brand of entertainment,” he added.

Galloway will perform a six-song set of some of Spears’ biggest hits including “Hit Me Baby One More Time,” “Gimme More,” “Toxic,” “Slave,” “Circus,” and “Womanizer.” Galloway’s set was conceived and designed by veteran American Superstars producer and Las Vegas Walk of Stars 2008 inductee Donny Moore.

Galloway is a singer, dancer, model, and actress who has performed everywhere from theme parks and cruise lines to production shows and musical theater. In addition, just last month, JERSEY BOYS was named “Best Show” in Las Vegas by the staff of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, in the newspaper’s 28th annual “Best of Las Vegas” poll.

“Las Vegas has proven itself to be a great home for JERSEY BOYS during the last year,” said JERSEY BOYS producer Michael David. “We are honored that the community has fully embraced the show and we look forward to sharing this remarkable true story with Las Vegas audiences for a long time to come.”

In honor of the show’s first anniversary, the cast of JERSEY BOYS will present a medley of songs in a rare, live performance in support of Race for the Cure and its valued mission Saturday, May 2 at 9:50 a.m. on the 3rd Street Stage of the infamous Fremont Street Experience.

JERSEY BOYS received the 2006 Tony Award® for Best Musical and the 2006 Grammy Award for Best Musical Recording; that recording was certified Gold by the RIAA in February, and is regularly found at the top of the Billboard chart of best-selling show CDs.

JERSEY BOYS is the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons: Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi. This is the story of how a group of blue-collar boys from the wrong side of the tracks became one of the biggest American pop music sensations of all time. They wrote their own songs, invented their own sounds and sold 175 million records worldwide – all before they were thirty. The show features such hits as “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You,” “Oh, What a Night,” and many more.

Special Edition: Rumor Control: BY Rick Garman

Las Vegas is a city that loves rumors. It seems that every day there is a new one popping up – a hotel is going to close, some superstar singer has signed a deal. It’s amazing how much traction these rumors can gain, with some often being reported as fact in otherwise reputable sources. Every now and then I like to take a look at the current rumors and try to put my two-cent spin on them, not so much in an effort to confirm or deny them – often rumors pop up because they are real things that are about to happen that people can’t confirm for one reason or another – but rather to remove the breathless hype and look at them from a more logical viewpoint. This way, when a co-worker or friend repeats some rumor as fact to you, you can smile and say, “Well, that’s not exactly true…”

As you’ll see, there are LOTS of rumors running around Las Vegas right now, so this week’s column is all about the control.

Rumor: The Tropicana is closing.
Reality: Sigh. I’ve been dealing with this particular one for years now, almost for as long as I’ve been writing about Las Vegas. The current situation is that the parent company that owned the Trop filed for bankruptcy protection. Under the reorganization plan, the company is being split up and a new owner – one of those mysterious private equity firms – is taking over the joint. The company is called Onex and they are the third largest such firm in the country. Who knows what they will do to the hotel in the long run but you don’t generally spend hundreds of millions of dollars on a hotel just to shut it down and therefore turn off its revenue, especially in this economy. The Tropicana is staying put.

Rumor: The Sahara is closing.
Reality: You’ll remember that the hotel was purchased a couple of years ago by an LA nightclub impresario who announced plans to remodel the bargain-bin property into a hip and swanky joint catering to a well-heeled party crowd. Not much has happened since the ownership change, leading some to believe it never would. But recently, the hotel has been pulling back dramatically on its offerings, shutting down some services and amenities all together leading some to believe they are preparing to close it so they can start the remodeling in earnest. Management for the hotel strongly denies this as being even a remote possibility and I tend to believe them since the idea of not only shutting down a revenue source but spending a lot of money right now in this economic climate doesn’t make any sense.

Rumor: The Fontainebleau will not open as scheduled.
Reality: Construction on the $3 billion hotel-casino near The Riviera has all but shut down due to a series of lawsuits and financial shenanigans that have besieged the developers. While it is theoretically possible that it could all get worked out and they could still meet their scheduled October ribbon-cutting, every day that ticks by without a resolution puts that date more and more in question. If things aren’t settled by the end of May – and it’s looking like they won’t be – I would expect an opening date that ends with 2010.

Rumor: CityCenter will not open as scheduled.
Reality: It depends on what you call “as scheduled.” At first they had planned to open the entire property at the same time in late 2009 but that changed as things moved forward. The whole thing was in jeopardy for awhile due to financial concerns but that has all been worked out and now things are on track to open in stages starting in October. The first of the condo properties will open then and the main hotel-casino will open in December.

Rumor: Steve Wynn is buying back the Bellagio.
Reality: As I reported here a couple of weeks ago, Steve Wynn expressed interest in the possibility of buying Bellagio or Circus Circus, but that’s all it is right now. There are no formal negotiations and certainly no formal deal.

Rumor: Danny Gans did not die of natural causes.
Reality: The coroner has not released final findings on the cause of death yet. Let the guy rest in peace until they do.

Rumor: The Lance Burton show is closing.
Reality: The illusionist broke his foot and is out through June. Interestingly, that’s when his contract with Monte Carlo is up and according to some published reports the contract has not been renewed yet, leading some to speculate that the show will not go on. This is pure conjecture at this point so don’t let anyone tell you they know exactly what’s going to happen unless Lance Burton calls you himself.

Rumor: Criss Angel is leaving “Believe.”
Fact: The show, a partnership with Cirque du Soleil, has not been doing well from a critical perspective but what I’m hearing is that the ticket sales remain at an acceptable level considering the downturn in the tourism market. This rumor kicked into high gear after the very public in-theater feud with Perez Hilton, which apparently made the Cirque folks mighty unhappy. But again, this is strictly a rumor at this point and for now no one is going anywhere.

Rumor: Cirque is offering two-for-one tickets to all of its shows.
Reality: Close, but no cigar. To celebrate its 25th Anniversary, Cirque is offering a deal where if you buy a full price ticket to any of their Las Vegas shows, you can buy a second ticket for only $25. It’s good for shows through October and of course there are restrictions so be sure to read the fine print. You can find out more here: http://www.cirquedusoleil.com/CirqueDuSoleil/en/LasVegas/summerPromo.htm

Rumor: Holly Madison will go topless in “Peepshow.”
Reality: The Playboy playmate will be taking over the co-lead in the topless show at Planet Hollywood from the departing Kelly Monaco. But Monaco never performed totally topless so there’s no reason to believe that Madison will either.

Rumor: A performing arts center will be built in Las Vegas.
Reality: This one is true. Although it has been in the works for ages, the funding has finally been settled and the Smith Center for the Performing Arts will have a ground breaking at the end of May. It will feature a world-class concert hall and a theater and is going to be located near the Las Vegas Premium Outlets near Downtown. It should open in 2012.

Rumor: All the buffets in town are changing to all-day passes.
Reality: A few buffets are offering this deal, specifically MGM Grand, Excalibur, and Stratosphere. You pay a few bucks more than any single meal but it is good for you to come back all day long. If you don’t want to do the all-day thing, you can still get the per-meal price.

World Series of Poker champ faces knows odds against repeating.

Thousands expected to ante up $10,000 when Main Event begins July 3.

By HOWARD STUTZ/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Peter Eastgate did the math. The odds aren't in his favor.

In November, the Danish-born Eastgate became the World Series of Poker's youngest-ever champion, besting a field of 6,844 players to win $9.15 million in the tournament's No-limit Hold'em Main Event.

World Series of Poker officials expect at least the same number of entries to ante up $10,000 when this year's Main Event begins July 3.

Even at 22, with his poker career in its infancy, Eastgate knows winning the game's ultimate prize for a second time is a long shot.

THE COMIC'S STRIP: Comedians share their favorite jokes about Sin City.

Those who play casinos regularly keep things light.

By COREY LEVITAN/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Few jobs in a Las Vegas casino are more important than stand-up comedian. Ever since Rose Marie was hired to tickle the opening-night crowd at the Flamingo in December 1946, it has fallen almost entirely on this person's talent to reverse negativity — to make the guest forget all about that recent bet on 13 red that effectively condemns junior to community college.

We asked top Strip comedians, and others who play here regularly, to tell us their favorite joke about the town that pays such a large portion of their bills.

NORM: Rat Pack fan has 'Ocean's 7' idea.

Music producer Jermaine Dupri is on a mission to bring back The Rat Pack vibe.

Dupri, Janet Jackson's longtime beau, wants to see Las Vegas return to the era when the coolest dudes in town wore tuxes and suits.

He has recruited Usher and Nelly into a group Dupri has dubbed "Ocean's 7," after the Rat Pack movie, "Ocean's Eleven," starring Frank Sinatra (as Danny Ocean), Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford.

HEIDI'S PICKS BY Heidi Knapp Rinella/LVRJ

B&B RISTORANTE
The Venetian, 3355 Las Vegas Blvd. South; 266-9977

This is clearly not your parents' Italian restaurant; ueberchef Mario Batali and partner Joe Bastianich skip the Sinatra in favor of the screamin' guitar and breathe fresh air into their fare, such as a roasted beet salad, prosciutto San Daniele Riserva, orechiette with sweet sausage and rapini, grilled lamb chop with eggplant, roasted cherry tomatoes and a limoncello and poppy seed torta. (9/28/07)
Overall: A- $$$$

CATFISH ALLEY
3620 E. Flamingo Road; 450-3474

It's pretty much all fried, all the time at Catfish Alley, but that's OK (as long as your cardiologist doesn't mind), because they sure know how to fry. We loved the fried green beans and the corn nuggets — crisp-coated lumps of creamed corn — and also the hush puppies, catfish, fried shrimp and baked beans. (5/1/09)
Overall: A- $

KILROY'S
1021 S. Buffalo Drive (also at 4340 S. Grand Canyon Drive); 363-4933

Kilroy's reputation as the home of top-notch burgers is time-honored but there's no resting on laurels here; they continue to bring it each and every day. Don't be scared off by the poker-bar location because the dining room is blissfully smoke-free — all the better to enjoy such half-pound all-American delights as The Bleu Baron with blue cheese and a mountain of onion straws, the Three Cheese Mushroom Burger with jack, Cheddar and Swiss and plenty of gently sauteed 'shrooms, a side of crisp shoestring fries and cups of decent enough baked beans and cole slaw. SHOW REVIEW: "Voices"
'Voices' of performers speak for themselves in old-school show.

BY: Mike Weatherford/LVRJ

There ought to be a law: Las Vegas always should have at least one show like this one, which is the way most of them used to be.

Audiences might not realize they miss a show like "Voices," which is all about personality instead of stagecraft, and entertainers getting down on their knees (literally) to earn your applause.

With Clint Holmes, The Scintas and Society of Seven no longer in permanent residence, the torch now passes to old-school showman Earl Turner and Lani Misalucha, who had a pop career in the Philippines before working on the Strip with Society of Seven.

It's not asking much. Just let these two talents get up there and sing as themselves, dressing nice without doing costumed impersonations, fronting a live band in the Las Vegas Hilton's cozy Shimmer Cabaret.

‘Mistress of Sensuality’ makes ‘Zumanity’ accessible.
BY: Brendon Buhler/Las Vegas Sun

Christopher Kenney’s job description is “Mistress of Sensuality” in Cirque du Soleil’s “Zumanity” at New York-New York. The description really belongs to his drag creation and other self, Edie, an impossibly tall, black-haired throwback to 1960s chanteuses with long, slender (and large-kneed) legs. Kenney developed those legs as a professional ballet dancer in Oregon, before creating Edie in 2000 in New York City. Kenney — and Edie — joined “Zumanity” as its hostess in January 2008.

“Zumanity” is more pan-sexual than the usual Vegas topless revue or male strip show. How do you make the audience comfortable?

Edie adds a finesse to it. She makes it accessible, so it’s not scary. I’m kind of scooping everybody up and taking them with me, so everyone is “us” — not “us” and “them.”

Guitar great Carlos Santana launched his residency in Las Vegas last night with the first performance of his new show Supernatural Santana: A Trip Through the Hits. The music legend has a two-year contract of performances at The Rogue Joint in the Hard Rock Hotel.

The show opened with a surprise guest group of percussionists from The Lion King at Mandalay Bay, who made their way through the crowd drumming and then onto the stage, where they joined Carlos and his band, reports our contributing photographer Erik Kabik. It turned into a percussion jam that led into the classic tune “Soul Sacrifice,” followed by an uplifting “Everybody’s Everything,” which featured a heavy showcase of his horn section.

Santana immediately launched into his soaring guitar solos and leads that he’s so well known for that seem to transcend the music itself.

Said Erik: “I liken Santana and his style to such jazz greats as John Coltrane and Miles Davis or rock guitarists Jerry Garcia and Jimi Hendrix. Like Santana, their soloing style seemed to be channeled from a higher place and took them into a trance-like state during their delivery of the music. Santana always seems to take his art to the next level and plays with intention and emotion, and he appears to be having a good time, always stopping to enjoy the grooves of his band and take it all in for himself, as well.”

His band mates of many years Chester Thompson on the keyboards, Raul Rekow on congas and the other members of the band were in top form for this opening night show. Song after song, the band delved deep into its 40-year archive of music. The most notable tunes were a rendition of John Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme,” plus “Incident at Neshbur, “Jingo” and the crowd-pleasers “Smooth,” “I Ain’t Got Nobody That I Can Depend On” and the great Abraxas album tunes “Black Magic Woman” and “Oyo Coma Va.”

Erik summed up: “It was a highly charged set of music from one of the greatest guitar players of all time. He sounds as fresh on his leads as ever and has that signature attack and tonality that sets him apart the minute you hear his fingers touch the strings. It was a great premiere for what is sure to be a legendary run of shows over the next two years in Vegas.”

How about drinks after work at the Crazy Girls Cafe?
By: Robin Leach/Las Vegas Sun

There are no ifs, ands or butts about this story: The Crazy Girls are on the move across America. Don’t misunderstand: They are still appearing in their topless show at the Riviera, but now a Crazy Girls Cafe is coming to a neighborhood near you!

Producer-owner Norbert Aleman is in New Orleans today getting ready to unveil the first Crazy Girls Cafe in the French Quarter. Then he has ambitious plans set for a string of them from as nearby as Reno — the second outpost — to as far away as Atlantic City, N.J.

Norbert tells me that his dancers will strut their stuff atop the bar and customer tables at each place, and there’ll be a gorgeous female singer who’ll play mistress to oversee the party hijinx.

“It’s a fun, wild concept that marries fabulous food with delicious drinks and an outrageous party feel,” Norbert told me. “It’s priced right so people will want to shake off the economic blues with a real fun night out without feeling pained when the check arrives.”

Norbert expects to have 10 of them open over the next 12 months under terms of a deal he has made with a Las Vegas gaming entertainment company.

What a welcome to: Las Vegas for Whoopi Goldberg. One hour into her show at the Danny Gans Theater, a patron seated in the front, needed emergency medical care. Whoopi closed the show so as to allow this person to receive the care he needed. This lady has run the gamut in show business, but most important, she is a gracious lady.

There's more than just the heat headed to Las Vegas for the summer season. The season's kick-off starts with the Fremont Street Experience and the Summer of '69: Vegas or Bust. Fremont Experience has put together an outstanding plan that includes performances that started on Memorial Day and run all the way through Labor Day week-end. What a great way to celebrate and great for the Fremont Street Experience, too.The line-up for Summer of '69 includes performances by The Guess Who, Jefferson Starship, The 5th Dimension and even Three Dog Night, just to mention a few. Bring back memories? You bet. Let's face it,the music from forty years ago was pretty good…, and I should know!

For those of you who missed Mamma Mia at Mandalay Bay and for those of you that still remember all the music of the Swedish band ABBA, here's your chance to reunite with that special sound. It's the Ultimate ABBA Concert. The Las Vegas Hilton introduces both locals and visitors alike to what has been acclaimed the greatest tribute band around when Abbacadabra appears for three nights only starting June 12.Call the Hilton's box office (702) 732-5755 for ticket information. The familiar sounds, the dancing, the swaying and all that feel-good attitude will take everyone to the ABBA experience we all love. Abbacadabra is managed by Mirage Tribute Bands which is headed up by Jerry Greenberg and James Elliot. Greenberg signed ABBA in 1974 to their first U.S. deal when he was president of Atlantic Records and says he knows ABBA inside and out. In addition, Elliot says Abbacadabra is like watching the real deal. Guess you might say these guys have the inside track on the sights and sounds Abbacadabra brings to their audiences.

Carmen Electra will make a guest appearance at MGM's Crazy Horse Paris for one week beginning July 8th. Another line-up change is Holly Madison's replacement of Kelly Monoco in Peepshow at Planet Hollywood, beginning June 7. One of the original plansfor the show was to change some of the leads every 3 months.

The words were eloquent as friends spoke at the Memorial Service for Danny Gans at the Encore on Thursday. This was by invitation only but Danny's longtime manager, Chip Lightman thought it only appropriate to offer a limited number of invitations to Danny's fans on his website. His 3 children, who idolized him, spoke eloquently at the service, wore his favorite colors, and son, Andrew, his father's signatuare"spectator" shoes and red socks. Other tributes came from Mayor Oscar Goodman, Steve Wynn, and an especially emotional send-off by Donnie Osmond. George Wallace, on a lighter side, was both touching and funny. Other attendees were Clint and Kelly Holmes, Rita Rudner, and The Scintas, to name a few. All in all, a beautiful farewell to a fine gentlemen.

Steve Tyrell, who is referred to as the Ultimate Vocalist, will be appearing at the Golden Nugget starting June 12. Not only is Steve known for hisvocals he's also been key to production and collaboration of hits by such artists as Linda Rondstadt, Rod Stewart, Ray Charles and Dolly Parton to name a few.. His visits to Las Vegas have become few and far between and Steve's fans are glad to see him return for this limited engagement.

The Luxor is going to be offering some special deals to introduce the latest addition to their lineup, Menopause the Musical.. Menopause will be sharing the showroom with Carrot Top and Fantasy. and Paige O'Hara will be sharing the spotlight with Queen Emily of America's Got Talent. fame. As of this writing, Menopause will be presented at 4:30 PM. If they add any more shows the Luxor would have created a tenement. The Luxor's huge east facadeis also becoming the base for the promotion of selected feature films.

Back by popular demand: Bootlegger’s open mic night.
Inspired by ‘Cast Party’ event in New York, revue revived with new name.

BY: Jerry Fink/Las Vegas Sun

A popular weekly open mic night returns to the Bootlegger Bistro on Monday.

The misnamed “Celebrity Karaoke” was one of the most popular weekly entertainment events in town during a three-year stay at the Bootlegger.

It drew standing-room-only crowds every Monday night to hear a wide variety of entertainment, from rank amateurs to some of the most talented performers in town. There were singers and musicians and jugglers and comedians and puppeteers. And all of it was free.

Entertainer Kelly Clinton, founder of the showcase, ended the revue two years ago for a variety of reasons. And she’s decided to bring it back to the Bootlegger, 7700 Las Vegas Blvd. South — for a variety of reasons — beginning at 9 p.m. Monday.

Bikini Babes Wash Cars
Hey, guys, if you want your car washed by babes in bikinis, the Pavilion Lot at the Rio is the place to be tomorrow (Friday, May 29) from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. as the girls of Sapphire and Rio employees take hose in hand to make sure your car is clean and to raise money for the United Way of Southern Nevada.

This open-to-the-public car wash includes exteriors only with a $5 on-site cash donation. There will also be a food booth sponsored by McFadden’s Restaurant & Saloon, and an old-fashioned, fun-filled dunk tank. Should be a lot of fun and plenty of eye candy to ogle.

More Show Dates For Bette
Good news for Bette Midler fans. Her hit show at The Colosseum in Caesars Palace, The Showgirl Must Go On, has added 36 new dates for this year — from Aug. 11-Sept. 6, Oct. 14-25 and Nov. 3-15. Tickets for all are now on sale. If you haven’t seen it already, make it a point to do so as Midler’s 90-minute extravaganza flaunts plenty of girls and gags and features an enchanting repertoire of her greatest hits, with some of Midler’s favorite characters like Delores Delago – the wheelchair-bound mermaid – and Soph, the oldest living showgirl in Las Vegas. Great fun, great music and lots of energy. A real feel-good event.

Palazzo Introduces Farmer’s Market
How would you like to get your fresh produce at a Farmer’s Market in the Palazzo? Your wish will come true as Celebrity Chef Mario Batali makes it a reality on June 3 from Noon to 6 p.m. where local farmers will set up the Farmer’s Market at the Palazzo Waterfall Atrium, providing fresh produce for guests and restaurant chefs to purchase and sample.

Additionally, biodynamic wines presented by restaurateur/winemaker Joe Bastianich will be available to taste. Products such as tomatoes, cucumbers, honey, organic juices, and artisan bread will entice you to indulge in the greener side of Vegas as you walk through the beautiful waterfall atrium. The Farmer’s Market will celebrate Chef Batali’s three certified-green restaurants by the Green Restaurant Association: Carnevino at The Palazzo and B&B Ristorante and Enoteca San Marco at The Venetian.

Batali said, “I hope that this will be just the beginning for all of our friends in Las Vegas to help preserve our planet for the generations to come and to participate in long term goal oriented decision making in all of our businesses.”

The Farmer’s Market will consist of displays dedicated to produce with seven local farmers throughout the space selling items such as local quail, chicken and duck eggs, apricots, peaches, figs, golden tomatoes, local desert honey, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, white peaches, local herbs, tomatoes, asparagus, bread, a variety of lettuces and fresh juice from a local orchard.  The displays will be placed throughout the atrium space.

As we head into summer and many locals are figuring out what to do with their kids — or if you‘re visiting, wondering what you might see that‘s a little bit different, let me recommend any one or all three of the following: Haunted Vegas Tour, Vegas Mob Tour and Las Vegas Séance.

All are the brainchildren of Robert Allen, a comedian who graced Las Vegas stages for almost 25 years before retiring in 1999.

“I had spent more than 30 years working in 28 shows and it was time to do something else,” he says. “I started off with producing a show called Shock! but I think we were a little ahead of our time and couldn’t seem to find the right audience for it, plus I couldn’t find a good room that would take it. So that was the end of that, but in the meantime, I had an interest in the paranormal — ghosts and parapsychology — and had, for many years, been going on ghost tours in different cities around the country.

“My wife and I were talking one day and thought it would be wonderful if we could do a ghost tour in Vegas. So I went on the Internet and found that Redd Foxx’s house was haunted, Liberace’s restaurant in the Plaza was haunted and Bugsy Siegel’s monument was haunted. I said, ‘Hey, not only do we have ghosts, but they’re famous’.”

And so the Haunted Vegas Tour was born. Allen says he bought a van and for the first year, “a big night was three or four people. Then it sort of took off and now we’re doing 30 to 50 people a night. The tour is offered six days a week — every day but Friday — and it runs two and a half hours. We have flat screen TVs on the bus that show actual ghost photos, and we take you to a haunted location and let you go ghost hunting. So it’s not a Halloween ride in any respect. It has to do with parapsychology and actual documented ghost stories from the History Channel. Everything you see has been recorded on Haunted Nevada, which was one of the History Channel’s stories.”

The tour is now in its fourth year. It leaves at 9:30 p.m. each night from the Royal Resort at 99 Convention Center Dr. and costs $56.25 per person.

People taking the haunted tour were responsible for Allen’s next venture. “While we were doing the Haunted Tour, people would always be asking us if the Mob was still here. There remains a big fascination with that and after hearing this for some two years, my wife said, ‘If they’re asking for it, why not give it to them?’

Allen began looking into Las Vegas Mob stories — Tony Spilotro, Bugsy Siegel etc. and decided to give it a try. “Like the Haunted Tour, the Vegas Mob Tour started out with a little van and for a while only had two or three people, but now it’s up to 20 to 30 a night.” As with the Haunted Tour, it runs every night but Friday and leaves at 6 p.m. from the Royal Resort as well. It also runs two and a half hours. “The bus has flat screen TVs where we show Bugsy’s morgue shots, the car bombing of Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal, autopsy pictures, and lots of great footage.”

Allen’s consultants are an “ex-FBI agent who arrested the Hole-in-the-Wall gang, and Frank Cullotta, who was Tony Spilotro’s hit man.” Spilotro was the Chicago Mob’s man who oversaw their Las Vegas operations. “Both men have given me authorization to use their stories, so its all authentic. We don’t make up anything.”

To provide some relief to his tours, Allen employs four tour guides, who are all entertainers of various forms — magicians, comedians etc. “They dress up as mobsters for the Mob Tour and as undertakers with top hats for the Haunted Tour. In fact, one of our guys who conducts the Haunted Tour is a licensed mortician, so that brings a lot of questions from those taking the tour. Although are tours are serious, these guys bring some entertainment while we go from one venue to the next.”

Allen opened a new show this year called Las Vegas Séance which is a 7-day a week, 30-person live séance beginning at 10 p.m. All he would say is that it is held at a secret location that is actually haunted. Like the other tours, it starts from the Royal Resort and the ticket price of $56.25 is the same for each tour.

Motown legend Smokey Robinson is presenting Australia's hit recording artists Human Nature and their show "The Ultimate Celebration of Motown." The show will open at the Imperial Palace on May 23 and be the first new production in the showroom in 26 years since earlier this year "Legends in Concert" moved next door to headline at Harrah's.

While unknown to America, Human Nature, made up of brothers, Andrew and Michael Tierney, and high school friends, Toby Allen and Phil Burton, has toured with top names in the music business including Celine Dion and Michael Jackson. They have 23 platinum records and five No. 1 albums.

Human Nature's clean cut young men have been together for 20 years and met Robinson in Los Angeles a couple years ago when they recorded "Get Ready" with the legend.

HOLLY MADISON JOINS "PEEPSHOW" AT PLANET HOLLYWOOD
"Peepshow," the new striptease spectacular at Planet Hollywood, has announced blonde bombshell Holly Madison will join the cast on June 22 and be replacing "General Hospital's" Kelly Monaco, a "Dancing with the Stars" champion.

With a plan to feature rotating headliners, Madison, who appeared on this season's "Dancing with the Stars," will be strapping on her dancing stilettos and taking over the role of "Bo Peep," a modern woman who has yet to find her own confidence and sexuality.

Model Madison is best known for appearing as one of Hugh Hefner's girlfriends on the reality TV series "The Girls Next Door" and modeling for "Playboy."

DISNEY'S 'THE LION KING' HAS EXHIBIT ON DISPLAY AT MANDALAY PLACE An exhibit that celebrates the inspiration and reveals the evolution of the groundbreaking Disney's "The Lion King" production is now on display indefinitely at The Shoppes at Mandalay Place. Vegas Values Report:

Vegas TV this week!

Las Vegas Top Ten Values: June 2009.

Since 1983 the Las Vegas Advisor has provided hundreds of thousands of Las Vegas visitors with a monthly list of the best bargains in town.

1. Room Rates – Golden Gate et al. – - $19 and up
Room rates continue to top the Top Ten, down 30% and more off the traditional averages through June and barreling into the big summer-discount season. This is the first time in the nearly 30-year history of the Las Vegas Advisor that rates have bridged the gap between our traditional number-one room deals months (December and July).

2. Steak Dinner – Ellis Island – 24 hours – $6.95
The complete steak dinner at Ellis Island is the best-value meal deal in a city full of good-value meal deals. It’s a 10-ounce filet-cut sirloin, which comes with salad, garlic green beans, choice of potato, and fresh microbrewed beer, all for $6.95.

3. Shrimp Cocktail – Golden Gate – 11 am-2 am – 99¢
All you have to do is show a players club card to get the shrimp at the old 99-cent price; otherwise, you pay $1.99. Sure, the extra step (if you’re not already a member) is a little inconvenient, but a coupl of sign-up bennies mitigate the five-minute detour. More important, the shrimp are bigger and better than ever.

4. Buffet – M Resort – Daily – $8.95-$25.95
We finally tried M Resort’s Studio B Buffet and all we can say is “Wow!” This spread sets a new standard for buffets in the Buffet Capital of the World. Yes, the lines are still a problem, but once you’re inside, the huge turnover of patrons ensures that the fresh food keeps coming and coming and coming. The freshness, quality, and variety (when was the last time you saw a chocolate souffle at a buffet?), along with prices that are among the lowest for a Las Vegas superbuffet, dictate that M’s Studio B take over the best-buffet position on the list.

5. Prime Rib – South Point – 24 hours – $12.95
The prime rib deal at South Point is a stunner. It's advertised as 10 ounces, but that’s underestimating it by about half. Plus, it’s served 24 hours a day in the coffee shop, with your choice of soup or salad, potato, and rolls if you ask. If you have a hankerin' for a prime rib special, it's worth the trip down to South Point.

6. Fontana Bar – Bellagio – Daily – $6
The $6 charge at the Fontana Lounge is the cost of a beer to satisfy the one-drink minimum and see the show in Las Vegas’ classiest lounge, which overlooks the dancing fountains and the center Strip, and has live music from 10 pm on weekdays and earlier on weekends.

7. Lunch Comp – Crown & Anchor – Daily – $20 Buy-in
Rooms might be priced at rock bottom (see #1), but games and comps seem to be tightening. Bucking the trend is the long-time lunch comp at the Crown & Anchor pubs. The free lunch with a $20 video poker buy-in has appeared in the Top Ten in months past, but we revisited it recently and it’s still going strong. Plus, if you miss lunch, the $20 buy-in entitles you to a free appetizer (including the great chicken fingers) from 3 pm to midnight. And all the while, you’re also drinking comped premium draft beers from around the world. It’s ironic that the best comp in Comp City is now available outside the casinos (locations are at 1350 E. Tropicana and 4775 Spring Mountain).

8. Show Discounts – Cirque du Soleil – Daily – Five Shows
New this month is Cirque du Soleil’s first-ever appearance in the Top Ten. But in a nutshell, you can buy one ticket to any of the five Las Vegas Cirque shows (Mystère, O, KÀ, Zumanity, and LOVE) and get a second ticket for $25. We’ve never seen anything like this for any Cirque show and all indications are that you can save a bundle.

9. Beer – Casino Royale – Daily – $1
The $1 beer special at Casino Royale is back. You can find a lot of dollar beer deals around town, but Casino Royale serves bottled Michelob around the clock right in the heart of center Strip. Or you can opt for $1 margaritas (traditional or strawberry served in 12-ounce plastic glasses).

10. Steak & Eggs – Arizona Charlie's Decatur – Daily – $3.99
Competition among breakfast deals has suddenly heated up. There’s the previous Top Ten $1.49 bacon & eggs that’s still available at the Gold Rush, along with multiple good options enumerated this month in Dining. After due consideration, we’re going with the $3.99 steak & eggs at Arizona Charlie’s Decatur, based on its strong showing in our audit. You can get the ham if you prefer, or go to AZ Chaz East if that’s more convenient (where it’s 70¢ less, but not served 24 hours). The $3.29/$3.99 prices apply when you show a players club card; at AZ Chaz Decatur, it’s $6.99 without (four people can get the deal on one card). The hours are 6 am to midnight Monday to Friday and round the clock Saturday and Sunday.
