NORM: Heart problems in Gans' family.
Entertainer Danny Gans had high blood pressure "for years" and a history of heart problems in his family, his manager said Saturday.
Chip Lightman said Gans, who died May 1 at 52, three months into his long-term deal at the Encore hotel, "really watched his health, knowing it (heart trouble) was in his family."
Lightman acknowledged he has heard "all the rumors," but said he is not concerned about what might surface in toxicology tests that could take several weeks before the Clark County coroner's office releases the results.
"I can swear on a Bible I never saw Danny involved with drugs," Lightman said. "I can't imagine that being a factor. In my 18 years, he's never done one thing in front of me. Ever. I'd be surprised."

Coroner awaits facts to reveal cause of Gans' death.
By BRIAN HAYNES/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
The mystery of Danny Gans' death remains almost two weeks after he died in his home, leaving rumors to fill the information void.
Clark County Coroner Mike Murphy has heard the rumors, but doesn't care about rumors.
He cares about facts, specifically those that are uncovered by the investigators and doctors in his office who are charged with determining the causes of death for the 52-year-old impressionist and thousands of others who die in the county each year.
"It's kind of a total picture, and that's what we're trying to do, is put all the pieces of the puzzle together," Murphy said.
Gans died May 1 at his Henderson home. His wife had called 911 about 3:45 a.m. and reported him having breathing problems. Paramedics couldn't revive him.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Gans was 'down in the dumps' before death
If Danny Gans was sad on the day he died, don't blame Beyoncé or Whoopi Goldberg.
David Graham, a personal pastor and golf buddy to the late impressionist, said his friend was "unusually low in spirits" when they golfed on the day he died.
But Graham said "heavens no" to the idea that it had anything to do with the coincidental on-sale announcement for Beyoncé doing four shows at Encore in late July.
Gans "liked Steve (Wynn) a lot" and Wynn was "very happy with him," Graham said.

Steve's Las Vegas Quickies:
A court battle between former "Crazy Girls" gal pals Marla Gomes and Angela Sampras has resulted in a $1.3 million judgment against Sampras and her husband, Matt Stabile, producers of "X Burlesque" at the Flamingo and "Men of X" at Hooters casino hotel. The award included Gomes' $150,000 investment as a co-producer in 2005, plus attorney fees of $74,596, and costs of $5,659. Sampras said she is filing an appeal.
A lineup featuring an all-star cast of blasts from Las Vegas' past will provide the entertainment for Sunday's Italian earthquake benefit in the main showroom at the Orleans Hotel and Casino. Nearly 40 entertainers will take part in the main event, including Shecky Greene, Rich Little, Pete Barbutti, Clint Holmes, Charlie Callas, Frankie Scinta, Phyllis McGuire, Cork Proctor, Lorraine Hunt, Frankie Randall and Denise Clemente. Organizer Nelson Sardelli will emcee the benefit, which starts at noon with pre-show entertainment. Admission is $35.
Members of Bobby Darin's former band are getting together Sunday at 6 p.m. at the South Point for "Music from the Heart," a tribute to the late singing great. They'll share stories and flash video memories, while marking the 50th anniversary of Darin's classic "Mack the Knife." Proceeds benefit the Children's Heart Foundation of Nevada. The talent includes the Las Vegas-based Fat City Horns; Bill McCubbin, Darin's music director; Dennis Tufano, original lead singer of The Buckinghams; Gene Sironen, who worked with Legends in Concert in a Righteous Brothers act; and Dakota, the Chicago Singing Sensation.
No one's willing to discuss it, but there's an insurance issue involving Danny Gans and his deal with Encore at Wynn Las Vegas that suggests Gans had concerns about his health.
"Peepshow" is officially topless now. The Planet Hollywood burlesque review has "lost a lot of the pasties" worn on opening night, confirmed show spokeswoman Kate Whitely.
The false modesty was originally the artistic choice of director Jerry Mitchell, based on the policy of his annual "Broadway Bares" in New York. But he has since yielded to local custom. However, the show's two stars, Mel B. and Kelly Monaco, are keeping theirs.
Two shows open Friday in a new space inside the V Theater in the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood. "The Mentalist," comic mind-reader Gerry McCambridge, relocates from Hooters to take the 7:30 p.m. berth.
That's followed at 9 p.m. by "Sin City Comedy," which combines two comedians with two burlesque performances. Producing comedian John Padon also is the first headliner. "Men of X" producer Angela Stabile said the male revue will stay in the 9 p.m. time slot at Hooters. She wants to run another show in the 7 p.m. slot abandoned by McCambridge, and recently staged a showcase for casino executives.
"Menopause the Musical" will reconvene at Luxor on May 26, nearly two months after it closed at the Las Vegas Hilton. It will reopen with "America's Got Talent" singer Queen Emily, who came on near the end of the Hilton stretch as the show's first billed star, as well as Paige O'Hara and other local veterans.
Afternoon magic headliner Dirk Arthur is starting a 7 p.m. show at the Tropicana to fill the void left by "Folies Bergere" closing, but management says it's more of an interim move than a permanent one.
Dixie's Dam Bar at Hooters Hotel, 115 E. Tropicana Ave., has introduced keg service — sort of like bottle service, but with beer. Four beers (Budweiser, Widmer Hefeweizen, AmberBock and Michelob Ultra) are available in quarter-kegs for $200 each. The kegs fit into each of seven custom tables and provide about 60 12-ounce beers — and the service includes a beer-tender.
Giorgio Ristorante at Mandalay Place, 3950 Las Vegas Blvd. South, has created a special menu to welcome "The Lion King," with matinee and pre-theater tasting menus available, including a Simba kids' menu for $8.95, a matinee special for $19, a surf menu for $29 and a turf menu for $29.
Francesco's Pizzeria at the Treasure Island, 3300 Las Vegas Blvd. South, now serves lunch.
Say sayonara to the Sahara you once knew. It's still alive but barely: Room service and the keno lounge were scuttled last month and the buffet is currently closed on weekdays. Now there are rumblings that the House of Lords Steakhouse, a celebrity magnet during the Rat Pack era, and Paco's Mexican restaurant are closing this month. Senior management has been bailing. Can't be long before the new owners close the doors and start the hip transformation.
Fremont Street had a different type of "experience" this week, with the ribbon cutting event at The Cortez. The new Cabana Suites are now open and are beautifully decorated in an updated art deco design. It's like looking at a modern version of a Fred Astaire-Ginger Rogers room setting, and shows that downtown is still alive and worth seeing.
Comedic impressionist Rich Natole will be opening an afternoon show at the Harmon Theater starting on May 15.
Frank Marino, who starred for 25 years in "An Evening at La Cage" at the Riviera, is a special guest star in "Tony n' Tina's Wedding" at Planet Hollywood.

Travel & Leisure magazine has named Encore to its roster of the year's 45 best hotels, or the It List. The hotel-casino's profusion of natural light and of greenery were among the qualities that led T&L to single it out amongst Vegas resorts.

Claudine Williams, the first woman to run a casino on the Las Vegas Strip, has died following what is described as a long illness. Williams is most famous for having been bought out of the Silver Slipper in 1969 by Howard Hughes. The reclusive billionaire was annoyed by the glare of the hotel's iconic, glittering slipper and purchased the place so he could get rid of it, according to Williams. (He never did remove the big shoe, which now reposes in the Neon Boneyard.) She would later go on to run the Holiday and to chair the American Bank of Commerce, as well as becoming a philanthropist of note.
Five wins is the over/under for the upcoming Detroit Lions season (coming off an 0-16 campaign last year) and even that may be generous, writes Jeff Haney. In their first four games, the Lions' best hope of victory is against the Washington Redskins and even then it's a slim hope: less than 26%. Haney's bottom line: "you would do better than 100-1 by betting the Lions on the money line four times, rolling over your profits after each game."
In return for signing up with Goldstar, you can get two tickets to The Mentalist Live, with Gerry McCambridge (a $120 value), for only the $8 service charge. This offer applies to McCambridge's V Theater performances, which begin May 15, is only available for certain dates, and is limited to two tickets per person.
To celebrate their 25th birthday, the nice folks at Cirque du Soleil are offering a huge summer deal: Buy one ticket to any Vegas Cirque show and get a second ticket for just $25. Whoo-hooo! Just click here for the details. And as if that isn't enough, now through October 31 they're also running a summer sweepstakes with a humungous prize up for grabs. If you win, you and your companion of choice get a trip out to Vegas and spend four nights at MGM Grand and Bellagio (yes, that's a whopping eight nights in total), with three dinners for two thrown in, plus spa treatment, AND VIP tickets to all seven* Cirque shows. (Yikes, is it possible to OD on Cirque? Consult with your physician beforehand if you're concerned.) Click this link for all the details and rules. *Seven? we hear you say. Haha! We should have run a contest of our own. Yes indeed, there are a staggering total of seven Cirque shows in Las Vegas, or at least there will be by the time you win the contest: Mystère (the original bendy-people one), O (the water one), Zumanity (the naughty one), KÀ (the extrasupercool one), LOVE (the Beatles one), Criss Angel: Believe (yeah, that one), and the-new-one-that's-going-to-open-at-Aria-but-doesn't-have-a-name-yet-or-at-least-not-one-that-we-know-of (the Elvis one).
Lance Burton's June performances at Monte Carlo could be his last at the property. No contract extension has been announced and MGM Mirage refused comment, referring LVA's query to Burton's manager. An LVA source says the Burton camp is still in talks with MGM but isn't committing to any performances beyond June 20.

NORM: Injured magician to miss 19 shows.
Monte Carlo headliner/magician Lance Burton will miss 19 shows after breaking a foot bone during Thursday's show.
Burton is undergoing surgery Monday on his right foot, according to his publicist, Wayne Bernath.
The accident occurred 15 minutes into the show as Burton was preparing to do the floating bird cage with Elvis the bird.
When Elvis flew into the audience, Burton left the stage and retrieved the bird. The injury took place when the entertainer twisted his right foot on his way up the steps.
Burton finished the show despite considerable pain but "not knowing anything was broken," said Bernath.

The World Series of Poker's first high-stakes event starts on May 28. Which means we're just 18 days away from Phil Hellmuth's first temper tantrum of the tournament.
A new discipline system, however, could render his next outburst his last.
World Series of Poker officials want to do a better job tabulating infractions by players and improve enforcement. Players could be assessed penalties ranging from warnings to one-hand or one-round suspensions.

The slaying was the second homicide in less than a week to occur at a resort on the Strip.
Las Vegas police said the victim was a white man in his 20s.

Police: Caesars slaying suspect beat man with rock.
BY: Mary Manning/Las Vegas Sun
Metro Police say they have no motive as to why 27-year-old Bryan Hall, who is the suspect in a violent homicide outside the Caesars Palace Forum Shops on Monday, beat the victim with a rock the size of a grapefruit.
Metro Police homicide Lt. Lew Roberts said Hall was arrested about 2:30 a.m. today at his southwest valley residence in the death of 27-year-old Brandon Flamm of Las Vegas. Police had a warrant in hand and Hall was taken into custody peacefully, police said.
Hall is charged with one count of homicide with a deadly weapon and one count of robbery with a deadly weapon, Roberts said. Police are investigating the case and homicide detectives did not recover any money from the suspect this morning, Roberts said.

CAESARS PALACE: Family seeks justice in slaying.
Victim 'was the happiest he has ever been'
By ANTONIO PLANAS/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
Brad Flamm was the kind of man who always gave his grandmother a Christmas present, a birthday present and called her on Mother's Day.
Brad's mother said her 27-year-old son also had recently found the love of his life, a girl he had been dating since Valentine's Day.
"He was the happiest he has ever been," Jennifer Flamm said.
But his life ended sometime after midnight Sunday. His bloodied body was found Monday morning near a loading dock at Caesars Palace. His family, who said he didn't have a violent bone in his body, is at a loss to understand why he was slain.

Change in the air as Menopause moving to Luxor.
By: John/Katsliometes/Las Vegas Sun
The best little production show you've not seen — and I know I haven't seen it — "Menopause the Musical" is moving to the Luxor's Atrium Showroom beginning May 26. I know, it's not the first time visitors to the Luxor have gone through the change (ba-dum-bum), and this show should serve as a balance to the Luxor's entertainment lineup, which features "Believe," Carrot top and the adult-themed "Fantasy." The show logged more than 1,500 performances in three years at the Hilton, making me wonder, how the hell have I not seen this yet made it to "Believe?"
Tickets go on sale Friday at the Luxor box office and are $49.95. Give 'em a $50 and tell 'em to keep the change, and hey-OH! I'll stop now.

They sound like Motown. They look like the Four Seasons. They are Human Nature, the Australian quartet presented by Smokey Robinson, which just signed to a one-year deal at Imperial Palace. The show's official title is "Smokey Robinson Presents Australia's Human Nature," but maybe they should call it "Detroit Boys," as the cast so resembles the stars of "Jersey Boys" at The Venetian. Regardless, hotel president Don Marrandino says he has a winner with the show supplanting "Legends In Concert," which has since moved to another Harrah's property, conveniently Harrah's. I've learned not to argue a show's prospects with Marrandino, who usually hits the target with his entertainment decisions. "I do see the comparison (with "Jersey Boys") he said during a news conference/mini-concert announcing the show's residency at the IP showroom. "But I think Motown music has a wider appeal. I know all these songs. They don't sing anything I haven't heard of." In fine voice are Human Nature members Toby Allen, Phil Burton, Andrew Tierney and Michael Tierney, who simply belt out the greatest hits of Motwon while donning early-1960's styled suits.
The show begins May 23, fast-tracked to launch in just 10 days, but the key time frame is six months from now. That's when Marrandino will decide if the Aussie crew, backed by the coolest guy in any room (that'd be Smokey) will have earned a longer stay. Same as the way he approached Donny & Marie at the Flamingo, actually.

MGM Grand, Stratosphere join all day buffet trend.
By: Amanda Finnegan/Las Vegas Sun.
More casinos are turning to the all day, all-you-can-eat method to draw visitors to their properties.
The MGM Grand is offering an all-you-can-eat pass for breakfast, lunch and dinner for $29.99 per person, Monday through Thursday. The price for Friday, Saturday and Sunday is $39.99. Prices without the new pass are $13.99 to $27.99 for each meal.
Those who sign up for the players club at the Stratosphere will be eligible for the all day buffet pass for $19.99. The price goes up to $24.99 on Sunday mornings, and also Friday evenings for the seafood buffet. Regular prices without the deal run $11.99 to $20.99 per buffet stop.
The Excalibur in February began offering unlimited, all day access to its buffet for $25. The Luxor has a deal that packages its buffet with tickets to Criss Angel’s “Believe,” and includes access to other amenities.

Criss Angel in wax: Magician to get Madame Tussauds statue.
BY: Melissa Arseniuk/Las Vegas Sun
Criss Angel is about to become immortal.
No, the “Mindfreak” magician hasn’t discovered the secret for eternal youth. Instead, his likeness is about to be forever preserved in wax.
Angel’s waxen image will be unveiled May 21 during a special event at Madame Tussauds at the Venetian.
The 41-year-old magician is expected to attend the unveiling ceremony.
Like the statue of iconic rapper Snoop Dogg, which was unveiled last month, Angel’s wax figure required months of work to create.
Hundreds of pictures were used to ensure the lifelike replica was, in fact, lifelike.
An official announcement is expected from the famed wax museum later this week.

‘The Lion King’ promises to be an emotionally gripping theatrical, technical triumph.
BY: Jerry Fink/Las Vegas Sun
The strange musical sound flows out of Buyl Zamma’s throat and chokes me with emotion. My eyes water as I sit awed by the opening number of “The Lion King.”
I wonder how the full-blown show will affect me if listening to a simple rehearsal with the singers and musicians in street clothes brings tears to my eyes. This is first time the 53 cast members, 23 orchestra members and conductor have gotten together.
“This will be the only time the orchestra will see the actors,” says Jack Eldon, vice president of Disney Theatrical Productions.
As the Tony-winning musical finishes up previews and “The Lion King” gets set for Friday’s grand opening at Mandalay Bay, most of the musicians now hide in the orchestra pit beneath the stage. Only two percussionists can be seen flanking the stage.

The Lion King roars into Mandalay Bay: By Robin Leach.
Las Vegas Sun
The Circle of Life will be complete again at Friday night’s star-studded premiere of The Lion King at Mandalay Bay. Siegfried & Roy will lead a contingent of Las Vegas celebrities to welcome musical genius Tim Rice, director and creator Julie Taymor and Thomas Schumacher, head of Disney Theatrical.
Contributing photographer Tom Donoghue joined me yesterday for an afternoon with the cast and crew of the amazing show, and each day now through Friday’s premiere, we will bring you our one-on-one interviews and exclusive photos.
I talked with actors Alton White, who plays Mufasa; Kissy Simmons, who plays Nala; Buya Zama from South Africa, who plays Rafiki; and Clifton Oliver, who plays Simba. The entire cast staged several scenes from the must-see hit musical for our Vegas DeLuxe cameras, and Kjeld Anderson, the production wardrobe supervisor, showed off several of the masks worn by the actors in the show.

As Disney's The Lion King premieres at Mandalay Bay, a look back at how the animated movie made its groundbreaking transition to the stage.
BY: Jack Houston/Las Vegas Magazine
It had worked for Beauty and the Beast, the first Disney movie to make a successful transition to Broadway, and Cats, too, a musical with animal protagonists. But when Disney CEO Michael Eisner approached his then vice president of development for feature animation about staging The Lion King on Broadway, there were reservations. Major ones.
"There was nothing about the film that called out to be theatricalized," Thomas Schumacher recalled telling Eisner. "Frank Rich in The New York Times called Beauty and the Beast an animated Broadway musical. No one ever said anything similar about The Lion King."
But Eisner was persistent, so Schumacher set out to find a creative spirit who could translate the cuddly animated feature to the stage. He found that in Julie Taymor. Relatively unknown outside of the theater world, Taymor was the one who, as director and costume designer, would bring The Lion King to life on Broadway.
With Taymor onboard, the next step was conceptualization. Rather than follow a strict interpretation, she used the movie as a jumping off point. There would be no furry animal costumes cloaking unseen actors; instead, actor and animal became one. A giraffe is created by an actor on two sets of stilts wearing the animal's neck and head as a hat. A zebra is almost life-size with its head emerging from an actor's chest and the actor's head rising from its mane. Merging man and beast is a tradition that has existed since ancient mythology, yet Taymor's interpolation of it into the framework of a pop culture phenomenon was a bold masterstroke.
So, too, was toying with the story line. The original film clocked in at 89 minutes, more than an hour shorter than its eventual Broadway length, so there would need to be some embellishing. Simba's exile from Pride Rock is shown in greater detail, and the role of Nala is expanded to include a similar journey of discovery.
Kissy Simmons, who portrayed Nala on Broadway and reprises her role in the Las Vegas production, says the new production stays true to the majesty of the Tony Award-winning original.
"People really need to be prepared to be blown away," she said. "It doesn't matter where you're from, who you are, how old you are, your ethnic background or your culture, people always end up enjoying The Lion King."

Fab Lads,
Kids of Liverpool provide glimpse of young Beatles before path to fame and fortune.
BY: Paul Szydelko/Las Vegas Magazine
Two hours before the first notes sound in the glorious theater at The Mirage for The Beatles Love by Cirque du Soleil, the youngsters are lying on couches in a backstage lounge, enjoying SpongeBob SquarePants. So, what happens after they casually watch a pineapple under the sea and before they soar high in a bed above the majestic "Octopus' Garden" in front of thousands of audience members as the Kids of Liverpool?
The six youngsters, ages 9-12, the only children performing in a Cirque show in Las Vegas, rotate into four roles. From 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday to Monday (Tuesdays and Wednesdays form their "weekend"), Dakotah Rhoades, Noah Rotroff, Santino Cardinale, Mason Conner Roberts, Ty Wells and Seth Wright attend private school at Cirque headquarters together.
The children are driven from the school to The Mirage about 4:30 p.m. and have a snack or do homework until 5:30. On this Friday, they take a dance class from 5:30 to 6. They then go to their own dressing room, apply their makeup and change into costumes. By 6:15, technicians spray paint sores, scrapes and bandages on their arms and legs. At 6:30, they're ready for their cues, the first arriving about eight minutes into the production. They have dinner between the two nightly performances and they're picked up by their parents shortly after 11 p.m.
Never more than a few feet away from them is Susannah Denney, Cirque's child technician since Love's opening in June 2006, who has worked with more than a dozen boys.
Integrating new boys into the cast is a challenge. "You're immersing a 9-year-old into a professional performance," Denney said. "This is real theater, and they've never experienced the darkness backstage and the props and everything going around a million miles a minute."
Denney is in charge of the kids from the moment they arrive at The Mirage until they leave in the evening, defining the structure of their days, enforcing discipline and acting as a liaison between the production and the parents. "When they're first hired, we do an extensive tour, and the parents get to see exactly what the kids are going to be doing. When the kids are first here, the parents are allowed to stay with them until they're comfortable."
From there, Denney's goal is to provide a unique learning experience as well as helping to fulfill Cirque's vision of The Beatles. "For the most part, they grow up very quickly. When we hire them, we're very clear: This is a wonderful opportunity, but this is only temporary and as you mature, which is a good thing, we're going to be looking for younger boys, and you'll move on and have more experiences in life."

Smokey Robinson brings new headliners to the Imperial Palace.
By Robin Leach/Las Vegas Sun
Smokey Robinson has just announced that he will present Australia’s vocal group Human Nature in The Ultimate Celebration of Motown. Smokey has signed a one-year deal for the Down Under boys to headline at the remodeled 653-seat showroom at the Imperial Palace starting May 23.
The group features the distinctive, dynamic harmonies of members Toby Allen, Phil Burton, Andrew Tierney and Michael Tierney as they perform Motown’s greatest hits. “I was so impressed with the group when I saw them perform that I knew they would be a huge success,” the Motown legend said.
Human Nature has opened for such superstars as Celine Dion and Michael Jackson. Celine has said the members of Human Nature are “wonderful vocalists who really know how to entertain a crowd,” and Michael once raved, “Human Nature is amazing!”
“Human Nature has certainly proven that they have the talent to perform with some of the biggest names in the music business, and we are excited to bring them to a Las Vegas stage,” Imperial Palace President Don Marrandino said. “The Imperial Palace Showroom has been upgraded with a top-of-the-line sound system that will really highlight the guys’ incredible voices.”
Formed as a doo-wop band in 1989 in Sydney, Human Nature signed to Sony Music in 1994 and released their debut album Telling Everybody in 1995. They will release their first U.S. album this year.

Hilton headliner Barry Manilow to receive prestigious advertising award.
By: Robin Leach/Las Vegas Sun
For the first time, the advertising world of Madison Avenue moves to Las Vegas for its prestigious Clio Awards, and Hilton headliner Barry Manilow will be honored tonight with the highest recognition of a Lifetime Achievement Award.
The singer, pianist and record producer created and composed numerous hit jingles for various products over the years. He’s best remembered for the McDonald’s “You Deserve a Break Today” campaign, but also chalked up successes for Kentucky Fried Chicken and Pepsi. He won his first two Clio Awards in 1976 for Tab and Band-Aid spots.
Barry was only 22 when he started writing jingles, and he continued with them well into the 1970s after he’d become Bette Midler’s pianist and arranger — and moved onto stardom in his own right. During his near 40-year phenomenal career, he has sold some 80 million records worldwide, and the weekend of May 22-24, he will celebrate his International Fan Club convention at the Hilton, where he has been resident headliner since February 2005.
I’ve learned that Barry will perform a special selection of songs from his favorite album Here at the Mayflower he recorded in 2002. Critics said it’s the finest album of his career, in which he wrote about his childhood growing up in Brooklyn. My longtime record producer pal Ron Dante sang on some of the cuts, including “Turn the Radio Up.”
I’ll join Barry at the Clios for a conversation with him about the Mayflower weekend for his fans coming in from as far away as Britain and Australia!

Encore makes magazine’s annual ‘It List’
BY: Amanda Finnegan/Las Vegas Sun
Steve Wynn just got an affirmation on his latest (and most expensive) work from one the leading travel magazines.
Travel and Leisure Magazine named Encore Las Vegas to its "It List: 45 Best New Hotels of 2009" in its June issue. The "It List" is an annual list complied by the magazine.
Travel and Leisure said while there are touches of opulence and luxury around every corner, "we fell for the natural touches: sunlight inside the casino and a botanical backdrop of sculpted flower beds, laurel trees, and potted palms that make the 2.3 million square feet of public space feel downright cozy."
The $2.3 billion Encore opened in December 2008 with 2,034 rooms and suites, 72,000-square feet of gaming space, five restaurants and 11 high-end retail stores.
Wynn’s namesake property, Wynn Las Vegas, also has received numerous awards, including the prestigious AAA Five Diamond award, Mobil Five Star and the Michelin Guide’s Five Red Pavilion.

JOHN L. SMITH: Shecky Greene's return to Las Vegas stirs up memories of Sinatra, Caesars.
From: The LVRJ
Shecky Greene returns this weekend to Las Vegas for three shows at the Suncoast, and if they're not already sold out they should be.
The mere announcement of his return generated calls from Greene's local fans reminding me of their favorite Shecky tales. It's a piece of comedy history that is called "the Sinatra story" and details how, in a roundabout way, Ol' Blue Eyes "saved" Greene's life.
Greene was tearing up an audience one night at the Fontainebleau in Miami Beach when the subject of Frank Sinatra came up. He wickedly whittled away at the Chairman, but after the show found himself being used as a punching bag for some Sinatra sycophants in hotel security.
After a couple rounds, Sinatra comes up and says, "All right. He's had enough."

SHOW REVIEW: 'Shear Madness'
Town Square audience helps solve mystery of 'Shear Madness'
BY: Mike Weatherford/Las Vegas Review Journal
Back in 1980, a comic mystery called "Shear Madness" was so far ahead of the interactive curve that its local producer now hesitates to even use the i-word.
The concept is otherwise tough to explain in Las Vegas. It's a departure on several fronts, starting with the venue. You don't herd into another casino showroom, but a funky new studio theater in the booming Town Square shopping center.
The theater is surrounded by the trendy bars that made Town Square "the locals' Strip," so it seems a little less strange when "Madness" begins with a joke about Boulder City. It goes on to name-check the likes of Super Summer Theatre musicals and Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist Norm Clarke, amid more universal quips about Somali pirates and how bad the Criss Angel show is.
The dirty word that defines "Shear Madness" is one that strikes fear into the hearts of all who traffic in entertainment on the Strip: It's a play.

From "Report On Vegas.Com"
Top Chef is planning to shoot these 10 webisodes in the B Studio Kitchen at the M Resort on Tues/19 & Wed/20. They would love to have 15-20 foodys (be it chefs, somalies, restaurant mgrs) participate in this shoot. I should have rough times soon but in the meantime, they'll need to be flexible with their hours since it is production after all and things sometimes run longer than expected.
Being originally from New York and a creative person I enjoyed immersing myself in the performing arts culture of the city I grew up in, especially the spectacular Broadway and off Broadway productions. However after relocating to Vegas, I felt a since of loss having left behind that which I truly enjoyed. Alas!, my dear readers I am happy to report Vegas has become home to the same cultural experience NYC boast of. A true happening has descended upon us a movement of sight and sound that shook the Amsterdam theater to it’s knees for so many years, a production that truly Roared into my heart! A true experince for the entire family has come to Las Vegas, the long-running hit DISNEY'S THE LION KING is opening at the Mandalay Bay Resort Hotel, bringing the same rhysmatic colorful experience right here to the Strip that has been enjoyed all over the world. An has wowed Broadway for almost 10 years. The cast of characters is as different and as spectacular as the well thought out costumes with music that will have you humming long after you've left the theater This unique stage production will have you in awe from the first moment the lights dim to the dramatic opening scene. I implore all Las Vegans to experience for yourself this truly Joyful Noise! I am proud to say the Strips lights are now shining as brightly as Broadways. The Mandalay Bay Resort Hotel will forever be known as Pride Rock!
It was a busy Saturday night at KA by Cirque du Soleil this past weekend when two superstars from the world of music and sports hit the over-the-top production, each on a boys’ night out in Vegas!
At Saturday’s 7pm show, NBA superstar Chris Bosh- Forward for the Toronto Raptors- skipped the poker tables in favor of taking in the larger-than-life Cirque du Soleil show at the MGM Grand. Following his visit, suave crooner Michael Buble- known for his hit song “Home” and for covering the likes of Frank Sinatra- slid into his seats to take in the 9:30pm show.

Monti-licious from Report on Vegas.com
With the passing of Danny Gans last week Las Vegas faced one of the saddest weeks we've known in our community. Danny Gans was known as Entertainer of the Year numerous times and has left an indelible mark on Las Vegas.
Chip Lightman, Danny's manager for some eighteen years, said the autobiography Voices In My Head is at the publishers as this column is being written., and may be out as early as June. There may be a documentary in the works about Danny, too.
Danny Gans had recently opened his show at Steve Wynn's Encore following his closing at the Mirage. The Encore and Wynn will be holding a Memorial Service in Danny's honor on May 21-guests by invitation only.
The Hilton's new show Bad Girls which is produced by Glen Medas is another burlesque type adult treat. Fabulous costumes in the show and the lead singer, Lorena Peril , who stands out . She also does an outstanding impression of Christina Aguilera, which she did in American Superstars. This girl will be abig star.
Sharing the room at the Hilton with Bad Girls is John Stewart's show Voices with Earl Turner and Lani Misalucha. Earl is well known in Las Vegas and always creates that special bond with his audience while crooning those jazzy numbers while Lani is creating her own fans with that fabulous voice of her and great comedic talent.
Comediens rule with the pitbull of comedy Bobby Slayton opening at The Bobby Slayton Room at the Tropicana on and another favorite of mine Vinny Favorito is still packing in the crowds at the Flamingo where he continues with his shows seven nights a week. The remakable thing about Vinny's show is that every night is a new show!

Vegas4Visitors Weekly Awards BY Rick Garman
The That’s Gotta Hurt Award of the Week goes to illusionist Lance Burton who broke his foot during a performance last week at Monte Carlo. Burton has cancelled upcoming performances while he undergoes surgery to repair the damage and will return to the stage on June 2.
The Yummy Award of the Week goes to Chef Paul Bartolotta of Bartolotta Ristorante di Mare at Wynn Las Vegas, although he probably prefers the Best Chef, Southwest award he won last week from the James Beard Foundation. If food had an Academy Award it would be The James Beard Awards, an event started a couple of decades ago to recognize excellence and achievement in the culinary profession. Bartolotta’s new James Beard Award will go nicely with the one he won in 1994 for Best Chef, Midwest.
The Odds on Favorite Award of the Week goes to Adam Lambert, the even money favorite to win this year’s “American Idol” according to oddsmaker Johnny Avello at Wynn Las Vegas. The just for fun odds put “Glambert” in the top position with Danny Gokey at 2:1 odds and Kris Allen at 6:1. I have a different theory that involves voting patterns, mathematical probabilities, and “guyliner” but I won’t bore you with the details – sufficed to say I don’t think Adam has it all sewn up just yet, despite his recent Entertainment Weekly cover.
How to Save Vegas: Bring Back the Fun!
By Rick Garman
If you’ve been paying attention at all you’ll know that the news out of Vegas hasn’t been very good lately. The recession has played havoc with the city’s fortunes, with tourism, revenue, and the general outlook all taking a nosedive. Several companies have already been forced into bankruptcy and several others are on the verge, with the future of many a major Las Vegas hotel in question. While issues of too much debt and not enough capital for the major corporations that run most of Vegas are certainly worth noting, my opinion is that Vegas’ problems actually started several years ago when the collective brain trust that runs things apparently decided that the city needed to be more serious.
Las Vegas used to be fun. It still is, but in a totally different, more grown-up and much more expensive kind of way.
Remember the talking animatronic camels or the robot that used to whirl around the attractions level at Luxor playing “Walk Like an Egyptian”? Remember Ginger the tic-tac-toe playing chicken at The Tropicana? Remember the silly glee you used to feel when you walked into places like New York-New York or Paris Las Vegas for the first time?
During the boom of the 1990s, the city was all about excess. It was its own version of an arms race: who could build the wildest, most over-the-top spectacle. It seemed, for a time, that no idea was too outrageous. Let’s build a castle! Let’s put a canal down the center of a mall! Let’s put a volcano in front of the hotel!
Even the ideas that never came to fruition were more fun than the ones that aren’t coming to fruition these days. The Titanic hotel with a shopping mall in the iceberg; the San Francisco resort with a driveway across a replica of the Golden Gate bridge; the 10,000 room hotel shaped like the moon; the giant gorilla that was going to climb the side of the Stratosphere. Now all we get are bland luxury hotels with sleek glass exteriors and lots of fancy furniture.
Of course along with these more “tasteful” hotels come significantly more “tasteful” price tags, which is another thing that has diminished the fun factor in Vegas. I understand that corporations want to make money and I also understand that Las Vegas was built on the concept of greed, but maybe the time has come for someone to say “It’s okay to make a little less money” and knock down those room rates and dinner checks to levels that the Average Joe – you remember him, don’t you? – can afford.
Maybe the tough times the city is going through right now is exactly what it needed. The handful of massive corporations that run most of the casinos in town may have to start selling off assets to survive, which could mean a set of fresh faces will come to town to shake things up. Competition is a good thing and the smart investor could make a big splash by returning to the wacky, headline generating days of yore.
There is reportedly a new owner gearing up to take charge of The Tropicana. My message to him: bring back the tic-tac-toe playing chicken!
