Everything Las Vegas: Issue # 692/March 13th,2009

NORM: Divorce papers filed for Wynns.

Steve and Elaine Wynn, who had teamed up to build some of the Strip's most luxurious and profitable casino properties, are facing divorce for a second time.

Divorce papers were filed, and quickly sealed, last Thursday, Clark County District Court spokesman Michael Sommermeyer told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

The filing comes about six weeks after reports surfaced that that Steve Wynn was informing his inner circle that he had fallen for a 40-something British divorcee with two children.

The Wynns had not publicly confirmed or denied their split until word of the divorce proceedings.

They had divorced before, in 1986 after 23 years of marriage, although Steve Wynn was quoted as saying he never moved out. They married again in 1991 and continued to transform the Las Vegas landscape with their billion-dollar properties.

Lon Bronson and his All-Star Band get steady gig.
Popular local horn band to play at Green Valley Ranch.

By: Jerry Fink/Las vegas Sun

Lon Bronson fans will be happy to know that he and his All-Star Band have landed a steady gig at the Green Valley Ranch’s Ovation Lounge, a venue he has long-proclaimed to be the best small concert venue in town.

Beginning April 9 the band will perform free concerts there at 9 p.m. Thursdays.

“We’ll have lots of guest stars – local as well as national,” says the trumpeter. “Just not sure who and when yet.”

He has one more gig at the Ovation before the steady engagement begins. The band will play for free at 8 p.m. Sunday, March 29.

Steve's Las Vegas Quickies:

Bobby Slayton, aka "The Pit Bull of Comedy," might need a short leash on Sunday. It's his 500th and final show at Hooters Hotel. The parting shots begin at 9 p.m. Slayton was spotted Friday at the Tropicana. He'll be the resident headliner there after a renovation of the Comedy Stop.

Encore headliner Danny Gans has a cameo in the new film "Race to Witch Mountain," starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as a Las Vegas cabdriver who picks up a pair of siblings with superpowers.

The Monte Carlo is one of the two Las Vegas casinos that nightclub mogul Andrew Sasson has been "in talks with," his rep Lisa Long confirmed Tuesday. But "nothing has developed," she said. Sasson, who founded nightclub and restaurant giant Light Group, has partnered with Wall Street analyst Jason Ader in efforts to venture into the gaming ownership side.

Cher and her dancers have been throwing sailor hats into the crowd at the end of her 1989 hit "If I Could Turn Back Time" (the music video was filmed on the USS Missouri battleship) during her shows at The Colosseum (Caesars Palace). Seemed like a good idea until one of the hats didn't sail and ended up on the stage recently, nearly causing Cher to take a tumble.

The white tiger that appeared in Siegfried & Roy's farewell appearance was tethered to a cable as soon as it exited a glass enclosure, a spokesman said. That would explain why there were no security barriers at the Keep Memory Alive benefit for the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health. The tiger was identified as Montecore, the big cat that severely injured Roy Horn during a show Oct. 3, 2003.

After a 17-month run at the Las Vegas Hilton, The Scintas wrap it up on Saturday to focus more on touring. A Suncoast booking April 17-19 suggests the old-school Vegas act might stay connected to locals through occasional gigs there, as their pal Clint Holmes has done. Locals also can score $20 tickets to the last three Hilton shows.

The Scintas will be followed in the Shimmer Cabaret by a show called "Voices," which opens April 17 and pairs local favorite Earl Turner with Lani Misalucha, the Filipino star who previously teamed with the Society of Seven in Las Vegas.

"Voices" will be produced by Angelo Giordano, who also outlines a plan to screen independent films in the venue on his Web site.

Two downtown hotels, the Plaza and the Vegas Club, are offering free standard rooms … if you can find a lower rate on one of their partner Web sites than the prices quoted on the Plaza's and Club's own sites. Partner sites are Hotwire.com, ExpediaSAGroup, Las Vegas Tourist Bureau, I4Vegas, OrbitzSAGroup, Travelocity, SynXis Priceline, TripRes, Synxis.com, Vegas.com, Hotels.com, Mark Travel and Allegiant Air. If you find a lower rate, you'll have to speak with a call-center manager to verify it and your free room is good only for the night which you were trying to book in the first place — but not if the hotels are booked up that evening or its a designated black-out date. Call 800/634-6575 for reservations.

Monday marked the start of rehearsals for The Lion King, the next extravaganza planned for Mandalay Bay. While the cast was largely plucked from touring Lion King companies, Las Vegas actors Joseph Rivera, Renata Renée Wilson and Deon Ridley are part of the mix, as are nine South Africans. Lion King previews begin May 5 and the show opens May 15.

So Binion's Gambling Hall has $1 million on display? That's nothing, says the Seminole Casino chain. It's unveiling a $5 million display that will tour six Seminole casinos in Florida March 20-May 25. Las Vegas did get a piece of the action, though: The display was manufactured here.

The Bellagio Conservatory is celebrating spring with horticulture tributes and displays from England, France, Italy and Japan. The latest transformation lasts until mid-May. Dominating the setting: daffodils, jonquils, butterflies, an armillary sphere once used by French astronomers to chart the night sky, a villa re-creation with travertine terrace and ancient stone sculpture and a Japanese Zen display. Best of all, it's free.

A $1.75 billion deal by Australia's Crown Ltd. to buy Las Vegas-based Cannery Casino Resorts collapsed Thursday when the buyer couldn't meet certain conditions in time to close the transaction.

The Australian company, which is controlled by billionaire James Packer, planned to buy the two Cannery casinos in North Las Vegas and on Boulder Highway, the Rampart Casino near Summerlin, and the Meadows Race Track and Casino near Pittsburgh. The deal had been pending since December 2007.

Tips For Stretching Your Casino Dollars By Bill Burton.

I attended a party the other night and the topic of conversation turned to the economy. Most of us admitted that we were making a conscious effort to cut back on our spending shared some of our suggestions for doing so with the others. We agreed that it is easy to fore go buying large items such as a new car or house when the economy turns bad but for many of us cutting back on some of simpler luxuries we took for granted was more difficult. One friend said that he had given up buying his daily gourmet coffee from a well know national chain and was now brewing his coffee at home. He figured that he was saving at least $50 a month making this one change in his routine. He said he also buys soda from the supermarket and brings a can to work instead of purchasing it from the vending machine which saves him even more money each day. Other said they had given up buying bottled water to help stretch their budgets

Most of my friends are also avid casino gamblers and we started discussing some ways to stretch our casino dollars. Here are a few of the tips we came up with.

Hooters Hotel Opens "Dixie's Bar."

Hooters Casino Hotel recently opened Dixie’s Dam Bar, a 3,000 square foot laid back rock ‘n’ roll bar where guests can hang out and not have to deal with the hassles of a Strip nightspot or attitude.  There is no bottle service at Dixie’s and all attitudes are checked at the door.  Originally called Dixie’s Dam Country Bar, where country music and live bands were the norm in the venue, Hooters recently decided to change the theme of the bar to have an edgier feel.  The country look in the place has been changed to rustic décor with a touch of rock ‘n’ roll.  There is no longer a live band and all tunes come from a digital jukebox playing all rock hits.  The beautiful female bartenders, called Dixie’s Divas, can not only pour you a mean drink but will also hop up on the bar and perform choreographed dance moves to songs coming out of the jukebox.  Guests can park themselves at any of the tables and booths in the place but seating is first come, first serve.  For the ladies who look to be a Dixie’s Diva for the night, raised dance platforms have been built around the room for everyone to watch.  Dixie’s Dam Bar is open Wednesday through Saturday from 9 p.m. until the party stops and entry is free for locals and $20 for out-of-towners.

RA Sushi Bar Restaurant Fund Raiser.

RA Sushi Bar Restaurant located at the Fashion Show Mall will be hosting its 5th Annual Nicky’s Week Fundraiser May 24-30.  Nicky’s Week is a weeklong event that raises money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.  RA Sushi has chosen this charity to work with because one of the owners of RA had a young nephew who had suffered from brain cancer and St. Jude assisted the family during his treatments.  Unfortunately young Nicky passed away in February 2005 but the fundraiser was named in his honor to further promote the exceptional attention and support provided at no cost to families and children receiving care at St. Jude.  During Nicky’s Week, RA Sushi will donate 100 percent of the proceeds from the sale of various food and beverage items to St, Jude.  The items are: Edamame, Tootsy Maki sushi roll, Shrimp Shumai, FIJI, Red Bull, The Republic of Tea and other select beverages.  All 22 RA Sushi locations around the country are raising money during Nicky’s Week and the company plans on raising more than $110,000 to the charity this year.  In the past, RA Sushi has raised nearly $400,000 for St. Jude since the beginning of Nicky’s Week in 2005.   RA Sushi is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. or later.

MGM Grand’s Crazy Horse Paris, Las Vegas’ premiers first American Dancer.

MGM Grand’s Crazy Horse Paris, Las Vegas’ premier French sensation, recently welcomed its first American dancer to the prestigious dance troupe.  Kristal D’Arc, a stage name provided by Crazy Horse Paris management, has begun to stun audiences with her sophistication and poise when dancing in the show.  Since the inception of Crazy Horse in Paris in 1951 and the sister show in Las Vegas in 2001, there has never been an American dancer.  D’Arc earned her position with the illustrious French cabaret when American auditions were held in March 2008 where she was flown to Paris for a three-month training with the dance company.  Prior to joining Crazy Horse Paris, D’Arc has previous experience performing with the Rockettes and entertaining on cruise ships before a dance injury sidelined her career.  When she auditioned for Crazy Horse Paris, it was the first dance tryout she had attempted in more than three years.  MGM Grand’s Crazy Horse Paris performs nightly (dark Tuesdays) at 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.

March 8, 2009 Vegas Values Report
http://americancasinoguide.com/information/vegas-values/march-8-2009-vegas-values-report.shtml

NORM: 'Idol' contestant odds established.

Church music director Danny Gokey, a man on a mission since his wife died in July after heart surgery, is a narrow favorite to win the eighth season of "American Idol" over pixie-sized Alexis Grace, according to a Las Vegas oddsmaker.

John Avello, director of race and sports operations at Wynn Las Vegas, established Gokey as the 4-1 favorite among the 13 finalists revealed Thursday. The 4-foot-11 Grace is 5-1.

Avello's odds are for entertainment only; no betting.

Mother of three Lil Rounds, a favorite of judge Simon Cowell, is 6-1.

Legally blind Scott MacIntyre, a gifted pianist, is Avello's fourth pick at 8-1.

Adam Lambert, a big-voiced showman, is 9-1. Allison Iraheta, at 16 the youngest finalist, is a 10-1 choice.

Matt Giraud, 12-1, one of four wild-card finalists chosen by the "Idol" judges, is betting on his soulful talents.

Anoop Desai, who's come a long way since starting off on Cowell's bad side by showing up for the Kansas City auditions in shorts and flip-flops, is listed at 15-1.

At 20-1 is quirky Megan Corkrey, the single mom from Sandy, Utah.

The others: Puerto Rico's Jorge Nunez, 25-1 (keep in mind that Avello had Taylor Hicks as a 25-1 long shot before he won Season 5; former Miss America contestant Jasmine Murray, 30-1; Texas oil rig worker Michael Sarver, 40-1 and college worship leader Kris Allen, 50-1.

Gokey's wife, Sophia, died after a third operation for a congenital heart problem. She was 27 and a fan of "Idol" because Gokey reminded her of Hicks. Gokey decided to pursue "Idol" after talking it over with his pastor in Wisconsin.

JOHN L. SMITH: At 84, 'Rat Pack' showroom captain is still the man who knew the men. From: The Las Vegas Review Journal.

The Plaza marquee shouts "The Rat Pack is Back!" but one foot inside the theater I can tell I'm joining "The Georgie Levine Show" already in progress.

With due respect to the sainted Tony Bennett and the femmes of the fading Folies Bergere, Levine just might have the longest-running showroom act in Las Vegas, even if he's never seen his name in lights.

He's no song-and-dance man, but at 84 he remains light on his feet. He's not a standup comedian — at his age, just standing up should be enough — but his comic timing crackles. During our interview I notice his hearing isn't so hot, but his eyes never miss a blonde.

Tall, distinguished, impeccably dressed, George Levine is one of the last of the red-hot showroom captains at a show that celebrates the Vegas mystique of Frank, Sammy, Dean, and the rest of the Rat Pack. In a show filled with impersonators, Levine is a genuine throwback. What some folks can't appreciate is the fact there was a time top celebrity showroom waiters, captains, and maitre d's not only made big bank, but were well known in their own right.

If you couldn't be the man in Las Vegas, it always paid to be the man who knows the man.

NORM: Roy Horn's magic is his courage.

So what did we learn from ABC's "20/20" special "Siegfried & Roy: The Magic Returns"? For starters, Roy Horn insists his miraculous recovery is far from over.

"My doctor has told me that within one year I will be able to do everything I want to do," Horn told host Elizabeth Vargas.

And if that should happen, what has Roy missed most? Dancing and swimming with his tigers, he said.

Vargas extracted a fascinating revelation from Siegfried Fischbacher, who admitted to deep depression that led to "a lot of crazy things," including joining a monastery in Greece and getaways to Europe.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: 'Talent' performers parlaying exposure.

Last summer's season of "America's Got Talent" became a two-way street for Las Vegas entertainment.

It gave Las Vegas female impersonator Derrick Barry a chance to break off from "An Evening at La Cage" even before he knew it would close. "I feel like I got more press than anyone from that show," he says of his Britney Spears impression. "America was ready to see a new face for female impersonation."

Barry already was a working Vegas trouper. That in itself seemed a far-away dream for his fellow contestant Queen Emily, a semiprofessional singer from Stockton, Calif., whose aspirations had been postponed by the needs of her daughters and nephews.

But Emily (David) is now closing out the Las Vegas run of "Menopause The Musical" through April 5, and she is the first person ever to receive special billing in any production around the country.

The Masked Magician: Secrets of illusionists, unmasked.
Magician finding a big market for revealed mysteries.

By: Jerry Fink/Las Vegas Sun

The Las Vegas entertainer is universally despised by magicians who recoil in disgust from the man who wears a mask to protect his identity so that he will not be burned at the stake for his betrayal of the profession.

Actually it isn’t all that bad, but it makes for great marketing.

The Masked Magician has been revealing the secrets of the trade for more than a decade now and is still alive — and happy — to talk about it.

His name is Val Valentino, a 52-year-old native of Los Angeles who was tapped by the Fox Network in 1998 to portray a character called the Masked Magician for a series of specials called “Breaking the Magician’s Code.”

Mandalay Bay’s Hornbuckle is nuts — for “The Lion King”
By: John Katsilometes/Las Vegas Sun

On Monday morning, Thomas Schumacher, whose production of “The Lion King” is lunging at full sprint for Mandalay Bay Theater, introduced Mandalay Bay President Bill Hornbuckle as “insane.” Hey, I thought, “There’s the lead!”

But Schumacher was kidding (hence the grin) in his remarks at the rehearsal home of “The Lion King,” which is a big, prop-bedecked warehouse next to the Lamborghini dealership on Dean Martin Drive (if any cast member gets bored between scenes, he or she can ask sales whiz Eden Hatle to test drive a 2009 Reventon). This crew is fired up, to be sure. Everyone involved in the show was so upbeat at this early morning event, I actually sniffed my coffee for Maker’s Mark. For the first time, the cast sang a buoyant version — as if there were going to be any other version — of “Circle of Life,” and I was reminded of the line from “A Mighty Wind”: “They’re the kind of infectious that’s good to spread around.”

Nope, when you’re with the crew from “The Lion King,” you got no problems, mon, money-wise or otherwise.

Deals hit the buffet line: Eat all day for $25 By Liz Benston/Las Vegas Sun.

The economic slump has Las Vegas casinos blitzing the Internet with offers that include free rooms, half-price show tickets and airplane vouchers for future trips.

The Excalibur is filling a new niche, so to speak, for the gluttonous crowd.

The budget property is offering unlimited, all-day access to its buffet for $25. One can only imagine how much damage can be done to a roast or pasta platter in 24 hours.

Like many surprising hotel bargains these days, it's something of a social experiment. Or maybe a Pavlovian one.

The offer is available to customers who offer an e-mail address when they sign up for a MGM Mirage player card.

Jackson adds London concerts, with Ne-Yo aboard — is Vegas next? By Robin Leach/Las Vegas Sun.

On-and-off Las Vegas resident Michael Jackson’s London concert dates have now been inked in permanently for this morning’s lucky, presale password holders.

The debut 02 Arena show in the British capital will be July 8, with following concerts July 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 22 and 24; the final concert is July 26. Las Vegas-raised singer-songwriter Ne-Yo, who reportedly collaborated with Michael here on at least one of the new tracks that Michael has been working on for the past year, will perform July 11.

Michael’s marketing ploy for 10 final concerts obviously worked because demand has been so great, Ticketmaster’s online service nearly crashed. Now the singer has decided to spend his 51st birthday in London and add three more This Is It Tour shows. Overnight, Michael has added Aug. 26, 28 and 30 to the British run. He will celebrate his birthday on Aug. 29, coincidentally the same date as me!

Exclusive interview: Siegfried & Roy look at the year ahead.
By Robin Leach/Las Vegas Sun.

The most poignant moment of Siegfried & Roy watching ABC’s 20/20 special about them last Friday was right after it ended. Roy got up out of his wheelchair, stood and turned to his lifelong partner Siegfried, and, with tears in their eyes, they hugged each other.

“It was very good,” they said turning to an intimate gathering of 50-plus friends inside the Palazzo’s Sportsbook Bar & Grill.

I was the only invited journalist to sit with them through the broadcast. In between commercials, they happily posed for photos. They gave me a thumbs-up when I asked if they were pleased with the television special. Everybody in the room stood and applauded. They all agreed it had been an incredible idea to have a final reunion performance that had made “brilliant television” and benefited our city and charity.

Top 10 Casino Tips by Henry Tamburin

Play in Tournaments
Why tournaments? Because you are playing against other players and not against the casino, you don't necessarily have to edge over the casino to be a winner. You just need to play more skillfully than your opponents do. This holds for any casino tournament – blackjack, craps, slots, video poker, etc. Nowadays most casinos hold daily or weekly fun tournaments that cost very little to enter (usually less than $50). As long as the casino puts all the entry fees into the prize pool, you should consider playing them.

Play Texas Hold'em
You've probably watched a few of those popular Texas Hold'em Poker Tours on TV. I'm not suggesting you mortgage the farm and enter one but you ought to consider learning how to play Texas Hold'em for low stakes. To help you learn the ropes about the game get Bill Burton's book for starters, GetThe Edge at Low Limit Texas Hold'em. Burton will teach you in plain English how a savvy low-limit player can turn a profit at this game. He should know because he learned the game on his kitchen table and he has become a winning player. Remember when you play live table poker, it's you against your fellow table players and the more skillful you are, the more likely you will gain the edge over your opponents.

Use Gambling Coupons
You've heard it before but it is worth repeating – use all the gambling coupons you can muster. Why? Because every time you use one you have the edge! There are many types of gambling coupons – Matchplays, Lucky Bucks, First Card is an Ace, Blackjack Bonus Coupons and more. Jean Scott's book, More Frugal Gambling, explains each coupon, how they work, and where to get them. Using gambling coupons is a no brainer. And as Jean quoted from an anonymous Internet coupon hound: "The question is not whether or not to use coupons, but how many!"

Play Blackjack Skillfully
One way to gain the edge over the casino is to get the math on your side. Card counting sounds too difficult for you? You can learn Speed Count in less than half an hour and play with an edge (read the Golden Touch Blackjack Revolution book or DVD for details).

Play Video Poker Skillfully
Here it's a question of playing the right machine using the right playing strategy while cashing in on comps and/or cashback the casino will give you just for playing. There are legions of smart video poker players that are consistently playing with an edge over the house (that includes my 90 year old father-in-law Peter, who has quadrupled his video poker bankroll). You’ll learn everything you need to know in the Frugal Video Poker book (Jean Scott) or Bob Dancer’s new book Video Poker for Intelligent Beginner. So why not give video poker a try this year? Still not convinced? Then ponder this fact.  Often the highest paying slot machine on a casino floor pays less then the worst paying video poker machine. Enough said?

Take Advantage of Comps & Cashback
You usually have to take a break to eat when you play, don't you? So why not let the casino foot the bill? That leaves you with more gambling bankroll and when you consider the cash value of comps, you can often turn a blackjack or video poker game from a negative expectation (long term loser) into a positive expectation (long term winner). No matter whether you are a low roller or high roller, machine or table player, you should try to take advantage of all the comps and cashback that you can get. Look at it this way – the casinos in the US gave away one billion dollars worth of freebies to players last year (that's billion with a B). Did you get your fair share? If not, check out Jean Scott and her daughter, Angela Sparks, advice on comps and cashback in More Frugal Gambling.

Learn How To Control The Dice in Craps
"Whoa now, aren't you getting into some black magic here." Thought you might be thinking this. But I've been there, so to speak, and watched and played with shooters who can influence the results of their dice throws (and also had their throws mathematically analyzed). They do this by how they set the dice, and how they carefully hold and toss them so as to maximize the numbers they want and/or minimize the appearance of the 7. Their amazing exploits have been featured on Travel Channel, History Channel, Playboy magazine and other publications. Dice setting and throwing is a physical skill that must be learned and practiced to be good at it. But if you are willing to put in the time and effort required to master this skill, it's possible to shift the odds slightly in your favor (you change the game of craps from random to non-random, which can give you the edge). For starters read the book "Golden Touch Dice Control Revolution or watch the Golden Touch Craps DVD where you will see for yourself how the experts influence the dice (seeing is believing).

Play Slots with an Edge
No, I’m not kidding. There are about a dozen slot machines where it’s possible to play with a mathematical edge over the house. You need to read Jerry Stickman’s book. Advantage Play Slots for all the details on which machine these are and how to play them.

Slots Winners Report March 2009 By Gayle Mitchell.

Slots Winners Report for 3-11-09

1) Slots Win over Lottery Buy
Frances Grant’s plan was to buy her weekly lottery tickets at the Seminole Casino in Hollywood, FL., however the sales desk had closed. The next move for the Ft. Lauderdale resident was to try her luck at the progressive jackpot slots available at all six Seminole Casino properties in Florida. Against these odds, the 57 year old Grant not only hit for $517,712., but the huge jackpot is paid out in total—no waiting for yearly payments.

“How can you win if you don’t put yourself in a place to win?” asked Grant. She continued, “I just had a feeling about going to the Seminole Casinos, I have played here before and I really enjoyed it.”

2) It’s Grand to be a Millionaire
Wilsing Tse, 53, from Rosemead, CA struck a huge payoff of $1,995,173. playing at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas.

After betting about $30 at a quarter Wheel of Fortune slot, Tse states, “I just knew I won something big when the picture on the reel matched the picture on the machine.
The automotive services rep and his wife were staying in ‘grand style’ this trip.
Future plans include assisting family and friends in China; however, Tse is not ready to retire yet.

3) A Return Visit Creates a Millionaire
After playing at MGM Grand Detroit Casino earlier in the month, an anonymous Ohio pizza shop owner noticed some uncashed slot receipts and the return trip created a millionaire style win.

While his particular Wheel of Fortune game was not available on his return visit, the wait was worth it when it became it available—to the tune of $1,367,715.
The 52-year-old winner plans to pay some bills, fix up his farm and buy a new car.

4) It Pays to Play the Same
Beverly Imboden, 53, of Louisiana knows what she likes. It’s the Wheel of Fortune quarter slot with the Megajackpot. That was her machine of choice when visiting Harrah’s Rincon in San Diego with her family.

She fortunately did not walk away before hitting a $245,967. jackpot. “I couldn’t remember anything, I was stunned, excited, in disbelief.” said the stunned winner. “I had to find my kids.” The retiree plans to get rid of the mortgage with her winnings.

The Many Faces of Gordie Brown
Comedian lives the dream downtown.

By: Kiko Miyasato/Las Vegas Magazine.

The familiar music starts and Gordie Brown approaches the mic and sings, "To all the plants I've smoked before." It's his comedic rendition of one of Willie Nelson's (and Julio Iglesias') biggest hits, "To All the Girls I've Loved Before." His impression is dead-on. But it's the comedy that drives the impression home. "The comic angle is the most important thing to me before the impression," Brown said. "It's a weird thing because I'm an impressionist, but what I am most is a comedic personality. I'm a comedic entertainer who does impressions as a tool to make his comedy even funnier."

Twenty years ago Brown got in his car, stepped on the gas and headed to Vegas from Ottawa, Canada. He never looked back. After landing a couple of gigs in Sin City, he headed for L.A. "I figured that I would go to L.A. like a lot of people do and try the acting stuff. I had a great time there but I always knew that I would come back to Vegas, and with the dream of headlining." His dream came true in 2006 when he headlined at The Venetian. Then Celine Dion came calling. In 2008 Brown took off with her on her North American tour as her opening act. But the place where he once performed was still on his mind. Vegas was calling again.

Brown is headlining once more at the Golden Nugget. His comedy show is chock-full of impressions; his repertoire reaches beyond the 60 mark. You'll hyperventilate from laughter as you watch Robin Williams, Alan Thicke, Nic Cage, John Travolta and Christopher Walken audition for the next Batman movie. Or bust a gut watching the celebrity golf tournament with Jack Nicholson, Robert De Niro, Clint Eastwood, Tom Cruise, Ray Romano and Jim Carrey. Brown's singing chops have garnered him his own album, coming out soon, but he's also able to morph his voice into greats such as Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong and Bob Dylan. Songs made famous by Eminem, Alanis Morissette and Michael Jackson get the Brown treatment; lyrics are turned into punchlines.

Brown's relationship with the audience is also a standout part of his show. It's as if you're an invited guest into his home. His role? The gracious host who makes you feel more than welcome. Inspired by Elvis, Paul Anka and Rich Little, Brown has already carved a sizable notch in the entertainment field himself. But, with a smile in his eyes, he says, "The best is yet to come."

She Likes to Party, He Likes to Eat.
By Kiko Miyasato and Jack Houston/Las Vegas Magazine.

I think it was Miss Piggy who once said, "After all the trouble you go to, you get about as much actual 'food' out of eating an artichoke as you would from licking 30 or 40 postage stamps," and if there's anything I would trust a pig on, it's food. Especially frogs' legs. Also, mud.

That's wonderful, Jack, but while we're on the topic of mud, can we talk about getting down and dirty for a second – figuratively speaking, of course. For it was half-dollar Curtis Jackson who once said, "We gonna party like it's yer birfday," and the only place you can do that is the club.

True, true, Kiko. But you can't hit up the club without first building the base, i.e., lining your stomach with the best Las Vegas has to offer, then breaking out the bottle full a' bub.

I'll let you have that one, Snarky, but then we must devour the midnight hour at some of the premier clubs that Sin City provides.

OK, you do your thing, I'll do mine.

Hey girl, hey.

DELMONICO + TAO
HE SAID: Bam! Why kick it up only a little bit when you could kick it up a whole notch at Emeril Lagasse's one and only Las Vegas steakhouse. With just a pinch of his trademark Creole influences, Lagasse beefs up the New Orleans' original with award-winning wines and a cigar cabinet. SHE SAID: Even Siddhartha himself would climb down from his lotus flower to check out this Asian-inspired hot spot. The 10,000-square-foot party palace where gods and goddesses mix it up is lauded for its prime VIP service, sweltering dance floor, private skyboxes, celebrity clientele and the famous 20-foot golden Buddha.

AGO + BODY ENGLISH
HE SAID: The last time Robert De Niro was a partner in something, someone wound up dead. Good thing his Italian joint at the Hard Rock is very much alive. Agostino Sciandri pumps up his Tuscan-inspired cuisine for the A-list crowd. SHE SAID: Everybody can rock their bodies at this club (and, damn, are there some good bodies here). The swank den of desire packs in the sophistication, complete with leather booths, Baccarat chandeliers, black walls and even an über-VIP area.

OKADA + TRYST
HE SAID: Overlooking a garden and waterfall, the Wynn's Okada is isolated more than feudal Japan under the Tokugawa Shogunate, babe. Modern Japanese and sushi is the name of the game at this Zen retreat that features various methods of cooking, from teppanyaki (on an iron plate) to robata (cooking by robots). SHE SAID: Bring your "lahvah" or leave 'em at home; either way, the sensuality lingers in the air at this indoor-outdoor rendezvous. Dripping in flirtatious colors, low lighting, velvet, leather and marble with a 90-foot waterfall that flows into a bubbling lagoon, your senses will definitely be left soaking by night's end.

COMPANY + CATHOUSE
HE SAID: Nicky Hilton, Nick Lachey and Wilmer Valderrama walk into a bar. While there's no punchline to this joke, the celebrities are all partners in Luxor's dining hot spot. Even those north of Houston would travel for the SoHo Kobe sliders, while Blue Moon beer-battered rock shrimp call out to my stomach and liver simultaneously. SHE SAID: Kittens, cougars and the men who like to pet them are welcomed at this 19th-century European bordello-inspired moonlight haven. The Cathouse Coquettes, clad in libido-lifting lingerie, perform dance numbers throughout the evening – these felines put peep shows to shame. Head nods go to the erotic photos that adorn the walls.

KOI + PRIVÉ
HE SAID: If it's good enough for Ari Gold, it's good enough for me. Entourage's power agent power lunches at L.A. hot spot Koi in the pilot episode, setting the stage for one of HBO's biggest hit series. The Las Vegas outpost at Planet Hollywood kicks it up a "nosh," adding Japanese and California touches to sushi, steak and seafood. SHE SAID: The temperature is about to rise, and it's a humid heat (better for the complexion), as Miami's party du jour The Opium Group and its "off the chain" nightclub also exist for the Sin City set. The sister club to South Beach's Privé stands on her own, beckoning A-listers to climb the escalator leading to her capacious playpen.

RAO'S + PURE
HE SAID: The New York original has 10 tables, but be thankful that Caesars Palace's location is bigger, badder and bolder. With Chef Carla Pellegrino at the helm, the signature lemon chicken is always a winner, as are the gigantic meatballs, taste-tested daily by amiable host-doorman Robert "Bubbles" Ubriaco. SHE SAID: If God needed a place to party, he would do it here…with the Devil right in the next cabana. Everybody and their mother – no, seriously – has partied here. It must be the 14,000-square-foot terrace overlooking the Strip, or the VIP areas with bed seating (naughty) or the Las Vegas Pussycat Dolls Lounge where the kittens shake their thangs.

N9NE + MOON
HE SAID: Maybe you move, maybe you shake, maybe you average 27 points a game for the Los Angeles Lakers. If you do, chances are, you'll love the Palms' restaurant's 24-ounce bone-in ribeye, as your stomach cries out like Audrey II in Little Shop of Horrors: "Feed me!" SHE SAID: Thank you, Mr. Hefner and Mr. Maloof, thank you. The modern disco, accessible through the Playboy Club, features a retractable roof – so you can get frisky under the stars while sipping champagne and rub-a-dub-dubbing on the dance floor. Doing the Bunny hop is optional.

Multiple Personalities.
Everyone's got something to say in amazing ventriloquist's display.

By Kate Silver/Las Vegas Magazine

You could say that Terry Fator has the whole world in his hands. Not only is Fator an impressionist/ventriloquist who took America by storm in 2007 with his performances on America's Got Talent, but each of his puppets is also an impressionist.

One minute Winston the Turtle may be singing like Roy Orbison and the next he's Kermit the Frog. Another puppet, Emma Taylor, can switch seamlessly between Natalie Cole and Etta James. Calculate all the possible permutations, between Fator's countless voices and his cast of puppets' abilities, and you'll understand the meaning of the title Terry Fator & His Cast of Thousands.

Fator has been honing his craft since he was 6 years old. By age 12, he'd perfected a handful of impressions and learned how to throw his own voice. Now he combines the two talents and expresses them through his puppets.

Although he was once a fixture on the fair circuit, Fator's big break with America's Got Talent propelled him forward, right smack dab into his own theater on Las Vegas Boulevard and a reported $100 million deal with The Mirage. Most nights that's where you'll find him, along with the likenesses of countless other performers ranging from Amy Winehouse to Elvis and Garth Brooks to Gnarls Barkley. You truly never know what you're going to get.

If the Blue Suede Shoes Fit…
Award-winning impersonator channels the King.

By: The LVM Staff

Elvis Presley is to Las Vegas what apple pie is to America, peanut butter is to jelly, and fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches are to, well, Elvis Presley.

Needless to say, there are a lot of Elvis impersonators in Las Vegas. Some perform his repertoire. Others officiate weddings at chapels on the Strip. There's even a team of 10 daredevil Elvi who jump out of airplanes.

But for an authentic tribute to Elvis that spans the years of his prolific career, head to the Steve Wyrick Theatre inside the Miracle Mile Shops to see Trent Carlini's Elvolution. A performance by the award-winning Carlini is about as close as one will come to a performance by the King himself.

With uncanny Elvis-like looks, dance moves, voice and costumes, Carlini truly channels Elvis. Likewise his female audience members channel their inner teenagers, flocking to the stage in hysterics for a chance to touch the pelvis-shaking icon impersonator.

SHOW REVIEW: 'Magic's A Drag'

Clever 'Magic's A Drag' a good start, but could use additional acts.

By: Mike Weatherford/Las Vegas Review Journal

Cashetta points out right up front that he's "the world's most fabulous drag magician," and "the beauty of that is you don't have a lot to compare me to."

Indeed. Nathan Burton does the same routine involving a beer bottle and a paper bag. He does it as kind of a throwaway while stagehands are rolling out larger illusions.

But he doesn't get the same joke out of it. Cashetta (Scott Weston) stretches the beer bottle routine into an extended opening bit, then accuses a woman on the front row of looking up his skirt to see what became of the bag he apparently crumpled up with the bottle inside.

HEIDI'S PICKS By Heidi Knapp Rinella from The Las Vegas Review Journal.

B&B RISTORANTE
THE VENETIAN

3355 Las Vegas Blvd. South; 266-9977

This is clearly not your parents' Italian restaurant; überchef Mario Batali and partner Joe Bastianich forgo the Sinatra for the screamin' guitar and breathe fresh air into their fare, such as a roasted beet salad, prosciutto San Daniele Riserva, orechiette with sweet sausage and rapini, grilled lamb chop with eggplant, roasted cherry tomatoes and a limoncello and poppy seed torta. (9/28/07)
Overall: A- $$$$

KOBE SUSHI BISTRO
6375 S. Rainbow Blvd. (also at 9340 W. Flamingo Road); 898-9998

Adding some fusion rolls and some "American" dishes to the menu has broadened Kobe's appeal in this growing neighborhood. Worthy of note: the Monkey Special (crab and spicy tuna on banana tempura), the Omelet Roll (crab, avocado, cucumber, rice and nori wrapped in a thin omelet), potstickers, edamame, Mozzarella Chicken and banana tempura with ice cream. (8/17/07)
Overall: A $$

LILY'S RESTAURANT
2101 S. Decatur Blvd.; 257-1330

Mediterranean/Middle Eastern restaurants are becoming as common in Southern Nevada as wing joints in Buffalo, but Lily's — which is Persian (Iranian) in provenance — rises above many of the others with well-prepared food and a serene atmosphere that belies its strip-center location. We liked the artfully presented Souvlaki, the Khoresht Fesanjan, the shish kabob, a combination appetizer plate of hummus, stuffed grape leaves and baba ghanoush, and baklava for dessert. (11/2/07)
Overall: A – $$

TRADER VIC'S
25B6 Miracle Mile Shops, 3663 Las Vegas Blvd. South; 405-4700

Umbrella drinks aside this is not your father's Trader Vic's; the pan-Asian menu and subdued decor reflect a more sophisticated American diner. We liked the Hawaiian poke, the Kalua pork sliders, Trader Vic's Fried Rice, tofu Thai red curry and nine-spice roasted half chicken; the authentic throwback (which is to say, not too sweet) Mai-Tai made things even better. (1/3/08)
Overall: A- $$

A DIVERSE SCENE: Krave nightclub draws gay, straight, local, tourist crowds.
By John Przybys/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Here's one possible criterion for a great gay/lesbian nightclub: Not only do straight people want to go there, they feel comfortable there when they do.

It's a standard that has been working for Krave for about 41/2 years now. Today, the 17,000-square-foot club in the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood has become a popular destination for a diverse universe of patrons, gay, straight, local and tourist.

Krave is "the only gay and lesbian club on the Strip," says Michael Palmer, the club's general manager, but it's "very straight-friendly. About 25 percent of our customer base is the straight crowd.

"What's the attraction? Krave's entertainment offerings go beyond the standard DJ/go-go dancer combo to also include stage acts and aerialists.

These additional special events are not included in the three-day pricing and are subject to additional fees.

Pre-fixe wine dinners will be available at Vic & Anthony’s Steakhouse, the property’s highly-acclaimed fine dining restaurant, as well as Grotto Ristorante, a classic trattoria-style Italian restaurant.
