'Legends in Concert' getting an upgrade after 26 years
Show moving to Harrah's Las Vegas/By Mike Weatherford/LVRJ

In 1983, believe it or not, Elvis wasn't everywhere in Las Vegas.

But for 26 years, there has been one sure and steady place to find him: the glory-glory-hallelujah, flag-waving finale of "Legends in Concert."

That won't change, but a lot of other things are about to — including the fact that you soon will find the King next door.

On Saturday, the third longest-running show in Las Vegas, behind only "Folies Bergere" and "Jubilee!," gives its last performance in its longtime home at the Imperial Palace. It reopens Monday at next-door Harrah's Las Vegas, sharing the main showroom with comedian Rita Rudner.

NORM: 'Legends' move to feature parade.

Monday's opening night of "Legends in Concert" at Harrah's will feature a Mardi Gras-like parade down the Strip with Elvis, Madonna and Frank Sinatra leading the way.

The parade will start at 4 p.m. in front of Imperial Palace, home of "Legends in Concert" for the past 25 years.

Harrah's president Don Marrandino will join more than 50 in-costume celebrity impersonators, showgirls, crew members and performing musicians on their way to Harrah's, their show's new home.

Imperial Palace employees will gather for a farewell sendoff to the sister property, and Harrah's employees will welcome them at the hotel entrance.

Tribute artists in the parade will include: Britney Spears, Bette Midler, Elton John, Garth Brooks, Dolly Parton, Diana Ross and The Supremes, Barbra Streisand, Blues Brothers, Bobby Darin, Jay Leno, The Temptations, Frankie Valli, and Whitney Houston.

Costly Gambling Mistakes.
How to Avoid Them. By Bill Burton

The casinos have the edge over the players and they will win in the long run. Fortunately anything can happen in the short run and players do win occasionally. If you lost every time you went to the casino you would stop going.

If you play games with a high house edge and make bad bets, you will lose more over time. The game you choose to play is not the only factor in whether you win or lose. Sometimes our behavior in the casino can contribute to our losses. Here are ten costly mistakes that some players make when they visit the casino.

Wayne's World: February 2009 By Wayne Bernath

I took in Criss Angel’s “Believe” at the Luxor and found it to be a
“wonderful show.”

Donny & Marie at the Flamingo Hilton are over the top as far as showmanship,
singing and production value. In 1990 when I was an entertainment
editor-writer for the Las Vegas SUN and ShowBiz Weekly (now Las Vegas
Magazine). I spent an afternoon and evening with Donny for a feature story.
Of course, my big question was “Why aren’t you and Marie headlining at a
Las Vegas hotel-casino?” A morose Donny replied, “No one will book us.”
That evening in Caesars Palace casino I asked Bobby Wade lead singer of his
band, The Imperials, to step aside and give Donny Osmond a chance to draw
a crowd in an empty casino. Within a couple of sets hundreds of fans came
out of the woodwork. He played Calamity Jane’s to a full house but it took 19
years to make his big comeback.

If you only have time to see one show in Vegas the must-see headliner
is “Lance Burton: Master Magician” at the Monte Carlo Resort &
Casino. Even if you don’t like magic you will love this show with dancers
and comedy. Image Magazine said, “…grandparents can relive the velvet
days of vaudeville, baby boomers mesmerized by the mind-blowing magic
and children of all ages wondering how he grew up to be so, like, totally
cool.” Mention at the Lance Burton Theatre Box-Office you want the
special and get 25% off.

The Star of the Desert Arena at Buffalo Bill’s in Primm brought in
Leann Rimes to perform on a Saturday night which helped to fill their
casino afterwards. The next night she was to attend “The Grammy Awards”
of which she was nominated. Leann Rimes should have chosen a better
opening act. The lead singer said, “Next we will be opening for Taylor
Swift.” Hard to believe, but, Leann Rimes was who we went to see. She’s
one of the strongest female vocalists on the country scene and an All-
American style. With the crowd chanting for more, Leann came back out
minus her band and sang “Amazing Grace” a cappella. She’s about 28
years old now, but I remember her as an opening act when she was 11 years old at the MGM Grand Arena. She said, “I began my singing career when I was five or six years old.” The tickets started at $39.95. The arena is really in need of some video screens.

Primm is a good place to avoid high ticket prices and is hosting Chicago, March 7; Juice Newton, March 11 & 12; Los Temerarios, March 14 and Baby Face featuring Jordin Sparks, March 21. If you book 30 days out you have a chance of getting
their free tickets.

Here are my entertainment recommendations for March in addition to all of the great shows that run regularly: Kenny Loggins at Green Valley ranch on March 13 and
again at Aliante Station on March 14, Cher thru March 21 at The Colosseum, Young Dubliners at the Hard Rock on March 18, The Neville Brothers and Dr. John at the Las Vegas Hilton on March 13 and 14, Tom Jones at the MGM’s Hollywood Theatre from March 19-April 1, Kevin James on March 6-7 at The Mirage, Don Rickles at The Orleans on March 20-22, Charlie Daniels Band at the Silverton on March 28, Sha Na Na from March 13-15 at SouthPoint and “An Evening with Clint Holmes” at the Suncoast from March 20-22.

“Folies Bergere” will be closing in late March. The show recently
celebrated its 49th year and it was moving toward its 50th, but owners
of the Tropicana decided to pull the plug. This show was the last true
connection to the past glory of Las Vegas. It’s the longest running show
in America.

Here’s more on my trip to The Great Road China Show. One of the
most fascinating joys of the trip was visiting the Panda Breeding Center in
Chengdu in central China. Maybe the Congo who was represented there
should take a lesson from them. Instead of laying off all of the park
rangers who protected the mountain gorillas. They are Africa’s equivalent
of China’s endangered Panda.

“An Evening at La Cage” closed after a 15-year run at the Riviera. I
was their publicist for 15 years up until six months ago when the owner
Norbert Aleman wrote me a touchy, feely, letter explaining they couldn’t
afford PR. Frank Marino told me to look for him re-opening “La Cage”
possibly in the same showroom in May. He will call it “The Ultimate
Frank Marino Show.” Who better than Frank with so many years of
experience under his garter belt to make it a success?

In one of Las Vegas’ best arenas at The Orleans “The 3rd Annual
Valentine’s Love Affair” hosted Old School bands of the ‘70s and ‘80s.
ZAPP, Rose Royce, Tierra and Sunny and the Sunliners performed to an
audience exceeding 4,000 fans. Rose Royce did their No. 1 hit “Car Wash”
from the film of the same name. I remember first hearing the song at the
defunct Red Rock Theater at the movie “Car Wash” where I met Red Foxx
there in 1976. ZAPP was up to bat a soul and funk band that formed in ‘78
and inspired West Coast hip hop. Tierra a Latin R&B band from the ‘70s
and ‘80s had the crowd dancing in the aisles. Sunny Ozuna and the
Sunliners performed salsa.

The club and suites level has a few limited opportunities available.
There are 248 club seats and 22 suites. Call Matt at 691-5107. This
intimate arena has larger seats than any of the others.

Is the IPhone an Illegal Gaming Device?
By Bill Burton

I love my IPhone and everything that it can do. It has made it possible to leave my bulky laptop at home while I travel and the applications are entertaining and practical. I have reviewed a few of the gambling related IPhone applications and will be doing more reviews in the future.

Last week one of the IPhone applications made national news and it could affect patrons who use the IPhone when they visit the casino. The application was the Blackjack Card Counter program that allows blackjack players to count cards by tapping the screen to input the information about the cards that have been played. The IPhone vibrates when the count is high alerting the player to raise his bet.

M RESORT DINING: Focus on value.
Chairman promises guests won't be overcharged in any of his Casino's nine restaurants.

By Heidi Knapp Rinella
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

When M Resort lights up a dark corner of the southwest valley on Sunday, it will be with nine restaurants and a decided emphasis on value, and not just because of the current state of the economy.

"Las Vegas lost its way and started overcharging people," says Anthony Marnell III, chairman and CEO of the resort at St. Rose Parkway and Las Vegas Boulevard South. "You're never going to see a $15 martini in this hotel."

Which is not to say the resort has the atmosphere of Filene's Basement — or anybody's basement, for that matter. It's finished with piles of imported stone, hand-blown glass, richly grained woods and thick carpet. Restaurant patios overlook the extensively landscaped, expansive pool/entertainment area, where accents of fire and water help create an atmosphere that "almost feels like you're in Hawaii, with torches all over the place," Marnell says.

The idea that this is a high-value kind of place, though, starts in the casino, where three stations provide serve-yourself soft drinks, coffee, tea and water to anyone who is playing — or isn't. And it continues through to the very top.

M RESORT ENTERTAINMENT: Outdoor concerts to be property's main entertainment offerings.

By Mike Weatherford
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

If you don't buy a concert ticket, you can always be hungry at a strategic hour.

Almost every other feature of the M Resort, including the coffee shop, is designed around the centerpiece three-acre pool area and its outdoor stage.

The Villaggio del Sole Pool and Entertainment Piazza is the largest permanent outdoor venue since Mandalay Bay opened with Mandalay Beach a decade ago. And it's even more noteworthy because outdoor concerts will be the property's main entertainment. There is no indoor showroom, or any big plans to host ticketed concerts in the 220-seat lounge.

"Once you get committed that you're going to do concerts, building the outdoor stage is the cheap part," says Anthony Marnell III, M's chief executive officer.

VooDoo Lounge at The Rio offers great off-Strip view along with artful bartenders.

By John Przybys
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

When VooDoo Lounge opened atop the Rio about 12 years ago, it was the first area nightclub to offer Las Vegans the killer combination of a great off-Strip view and sophisticated clubbing.

Las Vegas' nightclub landscape has changed dramatically since then. But, even today, says Alex Mendonsa, the Rio's director of nightlife, "no one can match our view."

HEIDI'S PICKS By Heidi Knapp Rinella from The LVRJ

BRIO TUSCAN GRILLE
Town Square, 6653 Las Vegas Blvd. South; 914-9145

Brio looks a lot more like a Tuscan manse than an outlet of a restaurant chain based in Columbus, Ohio, but that's just part of its appeal. It manages to deliver the familiar with a slightly innovative edge, as in the garganelli carbonara with not only the customary bacon and Parmesan and also grilled chicken and fresh spinach leaves; bruschetta Caprese that blends the best of both dishes; a somewhat-too-subtle artichoke-and-herb-crusted pork chop; a trio of creme brulees; and a lovely soup of the day, creme of morel. (9/5/08)

Overall: A- $$

FREDIANI'S ITALIAN RESTAURANT
2895 N. Green Valley Parkway, Henderson; 433-1494

Despite the noise from some budding guest musicians (especially when the house musicians were doing so well …) that marred our dinner at Frediani's, we basically liked the place, mainly because the food was so good. Fried artichokes were crispy-coated bottoms with a nice chunky tomato sauce, bruschetta was good and garlicky and we also liked the sausage penne and a special of Dijon-crusted lamb. (1/30/09)

Overall: B $$

LAWRY'S THE PRIME RIB
4043 Howard Hughes Parkway; 893-2223

Lawry's the Prime Rib has a limited menu — mostly prime rib cut at the table by a guy pushing a domed silver cart, with a couple of seafood selections and a rib-eye steak tossed in — but maybe it's just that stick-to-what-you-know philosophy that has made the company so consistently reliable for 70 years. We love the prime rib (both the California cut and the slightly larger Lawry cut) and also the crisp-crusted sourdough bread, Spinning Bowl Salad, mashed potatoes, creamed corn and lovely Yorkshire pudding. (11/20/08)

Overall: A $$$

LONGHORN BBQ
4343 N. Rancho Drive; 836-9170

The proliferation of good barbecue in a place like Las Vegas — which doesn't have the ancient crusty pits of the Texas 'cue landmarks — is proof that if you know what you're doing you can get well-smoked meats out of a gas- or electric-powered smoker, and Longhorn BBQ underscores that. We loved the baby-back ribs, pulled pork and chicken, and side dishes of cole slaw, baked beans and potato salad. Oh, and don't miss the oh-so-cheesy and oh-so-garlicky cheesy garlic biscuits. (2/6/09)

Overall: A- $$

At a Legends parade, who drives the golf cart? Elvis, of course.
By: Sarah Feldberg/Las Vegas Sun

Elvis drove the golf cart, and Madonna sat shotgun. In the back seat, two showgirls smiled widely, decked out in black feathers and lots of sparkles. Behind them, Dolly Parton teetered under the weight of her breasts. Britney strode in spandex and pre-nervous breakdown blonde locks. Garth Brooks strummed his guitar. The odd Vegas family that makes up Legends in Concert poured out of the Imperial Palace and onto the Strip sidewalk, waving like dignitaries as they headed north to their new home at Harrah’s.

“Don’t forget where you came from,” shouted an Imperial Palace dealer to Diana Ross, clad in an iridescent silver sheath.

After 26 years in the Imperial Palace showroom, live tribute act Legends in Concert has moved house, heading a minute or so down the Strip to sister property Harrah’s.

25 random things about Donny & Marie
By: Joe Brown/Las Vegas Sun

We all grew up with Donny & Marie — they’ve been on Las Vegas stages since before they were tweens and they’ve been on our TV screens, our record players, Walkmen and iPods for more than four decades. About 30 years ago Donny & Marie starred in their own TV variety show, and 10 years ago they co-hosted a talk show. Together and separately, they’ve had hit singles, starred on Broadway, hosted game shows, written books, driven race cars, marketed doll collections and Danced with the Stars.

But how well do we really know them?

In freewheeling back-to-back backstage chats just before they take the stage at the Flamingo Showroom, we challenge the brother-and-sister act to a variation on the recent Facebook craze, which coaxed thousands of people across the country to reveal “25 Random Things” about themselves. Donny and Marie both get into the spirit — in fact, once he gets started, Donny can’t stop coming up with amusing facts about his sister. “But I’ve got to be careful,” he says. “If I told you some of those things, I would be dead meat… Wait, I just thought of one: Her thumb …”

And we’re off.

Our very fine ‘Phantom’
Version at the Venetian has it all — the music, acting, costumes and special effects.

BY: Joe Brown/Las Vegas Sun

I’ve seen Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Phantom of the Opera” at least five times, in four cities, and I can say without reservation that Las Vegas provides the finest “Phantom” experience possible. Beautifully sung and acted, richly costumed and detailed, the Venetian’s resident production brings grace, grandeur and good humor to Lloyd Webber’s long-running gimmicky gothic gewgaw.

“Phantom,” which opened on Broadway in 1986, is the sole survivor of the British Invasion of the 1980s, when money-manufacturing musical juggernauts like Lloyd Webber’s “Evita” and “Cats” competed with “Miss Saigon” and “Les Miserables” to dominate Broadway. Still playing at the Majestic Theatre in New York, “Phantom” has notched more than 8,500 performances, making it the longest-running show in Broadway history, and there are companies in London, Osaka, Buenos Aires, Budapest, Warsaw and Copenhagen, along with a current 11-city U.S. tour.

These “event musicals” turned live theater into a must-see occasion again, something to talk about, and “Phantom: The Las Vegas Experience” still deserves the buzz.

R-rated comedian out, X-rated show in.
Hooters replaces Slayton with ‘Men of X’.

BY: Jerry Fink/LasVegas Sun

Don’t confuse X-Men with “Men of X.”

X-Men make up the team of superheroes from Marvel Comics and can be seen in movies, cartoons and video games.

Men of X are a team of male dancers created by Matt and Angela Stabile and can be seen at Hooters hotel beginning March 13.

X-Men is suitable for children over the age of 13.

“Men of X” isn’t.

The show is aimed at women, although men are welcome as well.

The adult revue will replace Bobby Slayton, the self-styled “Pit Bull of Comedy,” who will fold his show March 8 after almost two years at the Night Owl Theater.

Cashetta: Drag’s new Vegas queen.
With ‘La Cage,’ ‘Lucky Cheng’s’ gone, Cashetta is just in time.

BY: Jerry Fink/Las Vegas Sun

Cashetta takes up a lot of room.

The female impersonator and magician from New Jersey reminds one of Divine, the oversized female impersonator from Baltimore who starred in such John Waters films as “Pink Flamingos” and “Hairspray.”

About 6 feet in stockings, Cashetta is fond of high-heeled shoes and a blond beehive hairdo that make her look 7 feet tall.

Her actual dimensions?

“Big and beautiful,” she purrs. “Just leave it at that. I’m a lot of lady. I’m a big girl.”

SHOW REVIEW: Danny Gans
Danny Gans' show pretty much the same despite move to Encore.

BY: Mike Weatherford/LVRJ

If you were holding off on seeing Danny Gans until he moved across the street to Encore, good call.

If you were expecting him to entirely reinvent his act in the process, try not to be disappointed.

Compare the singing impressionist's relaunch to getting a new car. Everything's clean and shiny. That first greasy fast-food bag has yet to hit the carpet. There's a new spirit that makes you want to go racing down the highway like James Bond. But when you see someone else pulled over and realize you can't afford a ticket, you remember it's still the same ol' you behind the wheel.

Gans has a great new showcase on the former "Monty Python's Spamalot" stage, with sound and lighting eclipsing his old room at The Mirage. And he has a new backdrop of video panels, constantly animated with vibrant graphics and film footage.

But it's still the same show with Gans in front of a bandstand, doing the impressions that have won him standing ovations since his Las Vegas breakthrough in 1996.

SHOW REVIEW: Vinnie Favorito, 'X Burlesque'

Flamingo has little trouble filling seats with Favorito, 'X Burlesque'

By Mike Weatherford/Las Vegas Review Journal.
When it gets tougher to sell a show ticket during an economic nose dive, what are two sure-fire genres that still pack 'em in?

I got the "topless babe" part right away. But I never would have figured the insult-comic thing.

While most shows are discounting like crazy to fill seats, Vinnie Favorito is running so strong at the Flamingo Las Vegas that he is adding shows. This week, Favorito starts doing an extra 6 p.m. set on Saturdays, along with his daily ones at 8 p.m.

And guess what? "X" has a comedian, Nancy Ryan, who devotes the bulk of her time to lowering the self-esteem of audience members.

The Bank at Bellagio is smaller, more exclusive than other Light Group clubs.

If you walk into The Bank nightclub at Bellagio feeling like you're in for one of the richest nights of your life, then Jodi Myers, the club's original managing partner and current president of customer development for Light Group, has done her job.

From the moment you enter The Bank, the groundwork for your experience is laid, through the name of the club to the walk through the foyer lined with Cristal bottles.

"Everything is very rich and elegant," says Myers, who came up the name. "It flows with the Bellagio" and evokes the idea of that place where people keep their precious things.

At 6,600 square feet, it's a smaller space compared to other Light Group clubs, so "we're able to be more exclusive," Myers says.

This was some of the most amazingly tender, juicy brisket we've ever had, and the ribs and andouille sausage were right up there, too. The vinegar-based slaw was so tart it squeaked (that's a good thing), and we liked the black-eyed peas and rice, potato salad, macaroni and cheese, sweet iced tea and — Oh! — caramel-walnut-apple pie that was indeed heaven on a plate, as billed. THE COUNTRY CLUB

Wynn Las Vegas, 3131 Las Vegas Blvd. South; 248-3463

We thought $54 was a little on the pricey side for a steak, but if you're willing to foot the bill, The Country Club is quite a lovely spot to have dinner, with its vaguely clubby atmosphere and commanding view of the golf course. We also liked the starter of kobe beef carpaccio, salad of baby field greens with sherry vinaigrette, side of creamed corn with bacon and marvelously tender blackened ahi. (8/1/08)

Overall: A $$$$

THE EGG WORKS

9355 W. Flamingo Road; 368-3447

The Egg Works works as a breakfast spot because whoever's running the kitchen is creative when it comes to dealing with the basic egg. We liked the Works Veggie Benny, the California Crepe and a homemade banana-nut muffin — and the kitschy/farmy/folksy decor of the place. (2/23/07)

Overall: B+ $

ORIGIN INDIA

4480 Paradise Road; 734-6342

We loved the service, atmosphere — even the ease of access and parking — at Origin India, but especially the food, of which we sampled the Dahi Ke Kebab (shrimp in garlic sauce), Lhasooni Jhinga (deep-fried patties of yogurt cheese), Murg Lehsooni Kebab (tandoori chicken with garlic), Gosht Dahiwala (lamb cooked with yogurt and a cashew sauce) and, for dessert, a carrot cigar. Overall: A $$

The Living Garden at Palazzo brings plants to life for a very Vegas experience.

Five performances are held daily.

Riddle: What do you get when you cross a living statue from The Venetian with the animatronic fountains at Caesars?

Answer: The Living Garden at Palazzo.

Riddle: What's the Living Garden?

Answer: See first question.

It may sound like it, but this isn't one of those lateral thinking puzzles that makes your head feel like it's going to explode. But to some, the Living Garden might be an enigma.

For 50 minutes, dancers dressed as statues and grape-bearing vines put on a free show for people passing through the Shoppes at the Palazzo.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Nearly nude dudes to shake it at Hooters.

Las Vegas may never shed its reputation as a guy's party town where women are commodified — but well-paid — dancin' dolls in cabaret shows, strip clubs and nightclubs.

But here's a bit of a watershed. When "Men of X" opens at Hooters on March 13, at least the first category will be at or near equality. There will be four male G-string revues to match four female topless cabaret shows (though it's five if you count the vampire-themed "Bite").

Assuming all the rest stay open, "Men of X" will join "American Storm," "Thunder from Down Under" and "Chippendales: The Show," which celebrates seven years at the Rio at the end of February.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Strip performer playing with fire.

Bite" replaced its lord vampire, but the former one will "Ignite" the Greek Isles with a new revue.

Antonio Restivo leaves a big cape to fill as the star who always kept his scary-horror game face amid the campy topless shenanigans surrounding him in the Stratosphere late show.

Restivo says he found out his contract wasn't being renewed when a security guard offered his condolences, having apparently overheard the news in a post-show cocktail gathering. The new lord vampire is dancer-choreographer Russell Hines.

But Restivo still has his other bad-guy gig as the villain in the "Tournament of Kings" at Excalibur, and will test his mettle as a producer with "Ignite." He and his brother, Joey, operating as the Restivo Brothers, launch the dance revue with pyrotechnic effects and illusions at the Greek Isles March 13.

"Fire is my real passion," Restivo says. "I eat, breathe and spin fire (the latter by swinging balls on chains)." And he traveled the world doing that as a specialty act before settling into the vampire gig. When the fire marshal pulled the pyro from "Bite" two years ago, "I kind of lost a little of my drive."

The Greek Isles showroom has been empty since "The World's Greatest Magic Show" closed in September; the casino hosts "The Soprano's Last Supper" in a separate area. But "Ignite" still won't start until 11 p.m., giving Restivo time to drive over from the Excalibur.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Rough childhood challenged Fator.

Terry Fator's book sat on the desk, unread, for weeks.

"Who's the Dummy Now?" looked like something cranked out quickly to sell alongside the plush toys in the gift shop. Probably just a quickie rehash of the popular ventriloquist's Cinderella story, and how he broke out to win "America's Got Talent" and become the new Mirage headliner.

And for the first 30 pages, it is. Then he starts talking about his father and it gets dark.

Really dark.

$950 MILLION: Boyd makes Station an offer
Deal would give Boyd bulk of rival's properties.

Boyd Gaming Corp. has made a $950 million offer to acquire a significant portion of locals gaming rival Station Casinos, the company announced Monday in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Boyd Gaming currently operates nine casinos in Las Vegas and Henderson. Under the proposed deal, Boyd Gaming would acquire the bulk of Station Casinos' 18 Southern Nevada properties, including Green Valley Ranch Resort, the recently opened Aliante Station, Santa Fe Station, Texas Station, Wild Wild West, the two Fiesta properties in Henderson and North Las Vegas, and several smaller nonhotel gaming businesses, such as the Wildfire.

Station Casinos would retain ownership of the Red Rock Resort, Palace Station, Boulder Station, Sunset Station and 356 acres of undeveloped land the company controls in the Las Vegas Valley. Those four casinos have almost $2.5 billion in debt tied to them, according to a Station Casinos' filing with the SEC last August.

Two of a Kind
Lifetime performers pull out stops.
By: Paul Szydelko/Las Vegas Magazine

Their history runs deep in both Las Vegas and in the national pop culture consciousness, and to see them perform in person is to understand why. An easy charisma radiates from the stage as Donny & Marie descend a flight of stairs together for "I Knew You Were Waiting (for Me)."

Glamorous elements of a classic Vegas production – light-up props, dancers, a nine-piece band and five large video screens – fill the intimate Flamingo Showroom, and the singers appear to be having the time of their lives.

Soon Marie takes over, flirting with an audience member onstage, singing a selection of Broadway classics and showing off the dancing skills that television audiences recently came to admire in Dancing With the Stars. Her voice soars in Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Pie Jesu."

Then Donny rambunctiously takes the stage with "Soldier of Love." He pays tribute to Stevie Wonder and sings "My Cherie Amour." He dutifully gives audience members just a taste of "Go Away Little Girl" and "Puppy Love."

Reunited, the brother and sister tease. She mocks his dancing skills and stamina, and he gently chides her operatic skills. They kick up the energy with "Rock This Town" and a "dance-off." In the end, the audience seems to become a part of the family. The duo sits onstage, sharing photos of performers who have passed in and out of their lives.

It's fresh, wholesome entertainment from two performers who have spent more than 40 years in the public eye.

Vegas4Visitors Weekly Awards BY Rick Garman

The Delayed Gratification Award of the Week goes to Disney’s The Lion King for bumping back its debut a bit. Tickets for the production at Mandalay Bay now go on sale March 14 for a May 5 bow in previews and a May 15 grand opening. The press release says the delay would allow them more time to transform the theater. The Chuck and Bob Award of the Week goes to Terry Fator who debuted his new impressionist/ventriloquist show at The Mirage on Valentine’s Day. He’ll be running in previews for a few weeks and the grand opening is set for March 17.

The Just Because You’re In Vegas Doesn’t Mean The Laws of Physics Have Been Suspended Award of the Week goes, as a cautionary tale for the rest of you, to the guy who fell to his death from an 8th floor balcony at Circus Circus last week. Police say alcohol may have been involved. I only bring this up because it’s yet another example of people taking that “What Happens in Vegas Stays in Vegas” ethos a little too much to heart. In other words, be careful out here, okay?

2008 Worst Year Ever For Vegas! Well…
By Rick Garman

That’s a provocative headline for sure; one that has been thrown around in some form or another in the last week as the official gaming revenue and visitation numbers for 2008 came out. And while it’s true that there was at least one number that qualifies as “the worst,” it’s important to look at the numbers before running to tell your friends that Vegas is doomed.

That number was 10 percent and it’s the amount of decline in gaming revenue in Nevada for the year. It represents the largest decline in state history, more than five times worse than the decline the city saw after 9/11. A huge chunk of that decline came in the last three months of the year, when revenue was down an astonishing 18.9 percent.

Visitor visitation is also down for the year by 4.4 percent – down 11 percent in December in alone.

So on a percentage basis, things are bad. But from a real number perspective?

Even at its 10 percent off pace, the state still took in $11.6 billion in gaming revenue. That’s billion, with a b or roughly 1.5% of the stimulus package recently approved by congress. And the state still drew 37.5 million people to its glittery borders, still making it one of the most popular tourist destinations on the globe.

Don’t get me wrong… times are definitely tough for Las Vegas with the major and minor casino companies struggling to stay afloat. That impacts more than just whether or not you and I will have a place to gamble, it affects people’s jobs and lives. And not just those who work for the casinos but statewide since Nevada relies heavily on the tax revenue the casinos and all those tourists bring in.

But what is important to note, I think, is that from the numbers I’m seeing, most casinos are still making money, they are just making less of it. The thing that has gotten them in trouble is the same thing that has gotten a lot of people in this country (including myself) in trouble: too much debt. Granted, this is on a much larger multi-billion dollar scale, but the principle is the same. These companies owe more money than they can afford to pay back right now.

2009 is not expected to be a lot better for the city from a numbers perspective and there will almost definitely be more bad news in terms of closures, layoffs, and bankruptcies for several major companies. The sad thing is that the billions of dollars they borrowed to make the kind of “Only in Vegas” experience that brought in the big bucks could be the very thing that comes back to bite them in the end.
