Bellagio, Picasso and Le Cirque Receive 2009 AAA Five Diamond Award.

For the eighth consecutive year, Bellagio received AAA’s prestigious Five Diamond Award as did Julian Serrano’s renowned restaurant, Picasso.  Additionally, Le Cirque received the distinction for the sixth consecutive year, making Bellagio once again the only hotel in the United States to be home to two AAA Five Diamond restaurants.

“The AAA Five Diamond award acknowledges our commitment to excellence,” said Randy Morton, president and COO of Bellagio.  “AAA is a trusted source of quality, and I couldn’t be more proud of this important recognition for Bellagio.”

Picasso and Le Cirque are among only five restaurants in Las Vegas to earn this coveted award.  “Many of the world’s finest restaurants are located in Las Vegas,” Morton said.  “Having two of the very best among such an elite group is an incredible honor.”

Julian Serrano, executive chef at Picasso, said, “Our exemplary team deserves all of the accolades.  Receiving this prestigious award for eight consecutive years reaffirms to them we are successful in creating an exceptional dining experience.”

The regions of France and Spain where Picasso spent much of his life inspire Chef Serrano’s exceptional Mediterranean cuisine.  Picasso masterpieces, as well as a collection of his charming ceramic pieces, further delight the senses of diners enjoying the Picasso experience.

Created by Sirio Maccioni, known as the world’s most charismatic restaurateur, Le Cirque invites guests to indulge and relish world-class wines, haute cuisine and luxurious service in an intimate setting.  Le Cirque’s opulent dining room is complemented by a breathtaking panoramic view of Bellagio’s lake.

Mario Maccioni said, “As a AAA Five Diamond Award winner, we are honored once again to be among the top level of one of the most important organizations in our industry.”

AAA evaluates and rates more than 58,000 restaurants and lodgings each year throughout all 50 states, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean, providing the broadest coverage of any U.S. rating system, both geographically and by number of properties rated.  Of those, only 103 resorts and 59 restaurants, or 0.28 percent, earned the highly coveted AAA Five Diamond rating for 2009.

Michael Geeser, AAA Nevada spokesman, said, “For eight years, Bellagio has maintained the highest level of hospitality in the most luxurious surroundings.  The property is really what the Five Diamond rating is all about.  Once again, Bellagio is home to two Five Diamond restaurants, setting itself apart from the highest end properties in the world.”

To be considered for AAA rating and approval, restaurants and lodgings undergo a thorough evaluation by AAA/CAA’s 65 full-time tourism editors.  Five Diamond establishments go through a much more extensive review.  The entire experience, from arrival through departure, is taken into account.  AAA experts judge lodgings on the exterior of the facility, public areas, guest rooms, amenities and bathrooms. Restaurants are evaluated on criteria including food, service, décor and ambiance.

Fremont Street Experience Debuts "George Thorogood and the Destroyers Bad to the Bone" Viva Vision.

Fremont Street Experience presents the world premiere of  “George Thorogood and the Destroyers Bad to the Bone” Viva Vision light and sound show on Saturday, November 15 at 9 p.m.  The show premiere is in conjunction with the Scott World Firefighter Combat Challenge Championships, which began earlier this week and conclude with finals competition from 4-9 p.m. Saturday.

“George Thorogood and the Destroyers Bad to the Bone” features two of the band’s greatest hits, “Bad to the Bone” and “Who Do You Love,” and takes the viewer on a wild motorcycle ride through a dusty Vegas boneyard. With a heavy blues influence, George Thorogood and the Destroyers have been rocking audiences for more than 30 years with their heavy riffs and catchy licks.

“We have taken a new direction this year in the creation of new Viva Vision shows,” said Jeff Victor, President of Fremont Street Experience.  “We wanted to create shows around rock anthems and involve the artists themselves.  The first was ‘A Tribute to Queen’ which premiered in April, then ‘Don McLean’s American Pie’ in July, ‘Born 2 B Wild’ in October, and now ‘George Thorogood and The Destroyers Bad to the Bone.’  These new shows on the world’s largest video screen have become a must-see attraction for all Las Vegas visitors and have increased the nightly crowd enthusiasm on Fremont Street Experience, where there is a party every night.”

Viva Vision®, the LED display canopy rising 90 feet in height and stretching 1,500 feet along the Fremont Street Experience promenade from Main Street to Fourth Street, forms a spectacular foyer for the existing resorts. Stretching the length of nearly five football fields, Viva Vision serves as the showcase for the world’s largest graphic display system. Within the canopy itself are 208 speakers capable of producing 550,000 watts of concert-quality sound.

The Fremont Street Experience is a five-block entertainment complex located in historical downtown Las Vegas. In 1995, Fremont Street was closed to vehicular traffic and a giant screen was suspended 90-feet over the street to display spectacular light and sound shows on its 1,500 foot surface. The 12.5 million lights of the Viva Vision screen dazzle 365 nights a year and make the Fremont Street Experience a one-of-a-kind venue. With direct pedestrian access to 10 casinos, more than 60 restaurants, specialty retail and free nightly entertainment, the Fremont Street Experience attracts over 18 million annual visitors. The Fremont Street Experience can be found online at www.vegasexperience.com

Producer Dick Feeney Recieves His Star On The Las Vegas Walk Of The Stars Becoming The 31st Recipient.
From: www.accessvegas.com

Las Vegas Producer Dick Feeney was acknowledged for his creativity and talents Oct. 17 by becoming the 31st recipient of Las Vegas Walk of Stars. The Las Vegas Walk of Stars, located from Russell Road. to Sahara Avenue., honors those who have contributed outstanding service to their community in several different categories: show business, literary, pioneers; and civic, humanitarians, sports and military in association with the rules set by Clark County.

Feeney’s star, located in front of the New York New York Hotel & Casino, name was added among Wayne Newton, Bobby Darin, Sammy Davis Jr., Rich Little, Siegfried and Roy, John Stuart, Trini Lopez, Frank Marino, Tony Sacca, Liberace and Elvis. Please refer to www.lasvegaswalkofstars.com for more information.

Feeney began his career touring with the highly popular Boston-based band the “Lewis & Clark Expedition.” He then formed his own group “Gemini” and continued developing the talent and skills to make him one the countries top nightclub entertainers. Producing his first critically-acclaimed show in 1981 “Lullaby of Swing” in Honolulu, he then toured the production for successful runs in both Atlantic City at the Tropicana and Boston at the Bradford Theatre.

In 1985, Feeney first came to Las Vegas as associate producer of “An Evening at La Cage” at the Riviera Hotel & Casino. He went on to produce “Crazy Girls” in 1987. In that same year, Feeney won prestigious ADDY award for producing his first television commercial.

In 1991, Feeney opened “Viva Las Vegas” at the Sands Hotel & Casino. “Viva Las Vegas” now plays at the Plaza Hotel & Casino in downtown Las Vegas and remains the longest running and most successful afternoon show in Las Vegas history.

In 1992, Feeney organized the skydivers appearing in the hit movie “Honeymoon in Vegas” to form the now world famous “Flying Elvi” skydive team. Based in Las Vegas, the Flying Elvi is the only such team officially licensed by the Elvis Presley estate. In doing so, he actually invented the word ‘Elvi’ which has now become the accepted plural of Elvis.

Feeney’s genius continued as he went on to produce the classic-Vegas dinner show “The Rat Pack is Back,” the tribute to Frank, Sammy, Joey & Dean that currently plays at the Plaza Hotel & Casino. The show is the only Las Vegas created and based show with an award from the Congress of the United States and national touring theater productions.

In 2003, he conceived and produced the family-friendly “World’s Greatest Magic Show” at the Sahara Hotel & Casino with a unique format of multiple award-winning magicians all in one show.

Feeney’s talent is international. He has gone on to produce numerous other award winning shows worldwide from Japan to Monte Carlo including “Showgirls,” “The Great Gleason,” “Bottoms Up,” Forbidden Vegas” and “Playboy Girls Hit Parade.” His television productions include “The Entertainment Page,” “Las Vegas Tonite” and “Karaoke Krazy.”

Outside of showbiz, Feeney has volunteered much of his time as coach and speaker for PSI Seminars. In 1993, he started the Annual PSI Seminars Charity Volleyball Tournament, which over the past 13 years has raised thousands of dollars for local Las Vegas charities. Feeney is a recipient of the “Golden Eagle Award” for outstanding leadership, contribution and service, which has only been award to about a dozen other people.

With multiple shows currently running in Las Vegas plus touring productions, the Flying Elvi darting about the heavens, a wife Melissa and four children including Christopher 26, Katherine 7, Matthew 5 and Samuel 2, Feeney may seem busy, but loves it all.

PEEPSHOW Starring Mel B & Kelly Monaco To Open at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino In Las Vegas On March 30, 2009.

Tickets are on sale today for preview and regular performances of PEEPSHOW, the sexy new production set to open at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. PEEPSHOW, starring pop superstar and television personality Mel B. will open for preview performances on March 30, 2009, with an opening night gala planned for April 18 of 2009.

In addition to pop sensation Mel B who will originate the role as the mistress of ceremonies, the “Peep Diva,” sultry television siren Kelly Monaco will take the stage as “Bo Peep,” a timid girl who the Diva guides in her transformation into a confident, sensual woman.

PEEPSHOW is a modern burlesque show created specifically for the dynamic, glamorous audience that exists only in the adult playground of Las Vegas.  A highly stylized, full-throttle production show that combines sexy striptease and celebrity with high-level production values and a dash of passion, PEEPSHOW is a collaboration between Tony award-winning director/choreographer Jerry Mitchell and Las Vegas entertainment pacesetter BASE Entertainment.

PEEPSHOW has been a dream of mine for a long time and now that dream is coming true,” said Mitchell.  “We have gathered 20 of the sexiest dancers from film, video, and Broadway to bring a truly American form of entertainment back to the strip. The art of the tease, mixed with humor, razzle-dazzle, and today’s sexy music, with PEEPSHOW these stunning dancers will use their bodies to tell a story.”

With a plan to feature celebrities that will play multiple month engagements, PEEPSHOW will open in March 2009 with TV personality and chart-topping musical artist Mel B, a member of the world sensation Spice Girls as the show’s mistress of ceremonies, the “Peep Diva," a bold, sexy icon of female empowerment with all the answers, who guides the timid “Bo Peep,” portrayed by "Dancing With the Stars" first season champion and "General Hospital" star Kelly Monaco, on her search for love.

Mel B and Jerry Mitchell have had a long-standing relationship and worked closely together in perfecting her role as "Diva."  "I'm thrilled to partner with Jerry Mitchell and BASE Entertainment, a team known for creating some of the most spectacular shows in Las Vegas," said Mel B. "Because I'm coming out as a solo artist next year, I feel this show is putting me back in an arena that I'm most comfortable in and love doing most, which is performing and entertaining on stage."

“I started doing theater in high school and continued through college,” said Monaco. “To have the opportunity to revisit this experience again on a higher level, words can’t express how excited I am to be a part of PEEPSHOW.  I can’t think of a better place to do it than Las Vegas.”

Through many years of producing, directing, and choreographing his iconic annual event Broadway Bares in New York City, Mitchell has perfected the art of contemporary burlesque and modern strip tease – with PEEPSHOW he will bring it to life onstage in true Vegas style at Planet Hollywood.

“We are anxiously anticipating the debut of PEEPSHOW,” says Co-CEO of BASE Entertainment, Scott Zeiger.  “This show is a departure from the typical Las Vegas adult show in that it employs truly spectacular staging, design and production values as well as a top notch creative team led by Jerry Mitchell.”

In addition to choreography and direction from the venerated Mitchell, acclaimed designer David Rockwell is lending his talents to the show by designing the lavish sets and Showroom, creating a custom environment befitting the naughty fairytale world of PEEPSHOW.  Tony award-winning designer Gregg Barnes is also aboard, creating seductive costumes that will help blur the line between PEEPSHOW and reality.  To top it all off, the show will be backed by a powerhouse all-female band pumping out an engaging, contemporary soundtrack.

The Show

PEEPSHOW is a story of sexuality and empowerment told through dance and contemporary popular music, featuring the “Peep Diva,” a bold and powerful woman with all the answers, who guides the timid “Bo,” a modern woman who has yet to find her own power and sexuality, on a swift journey of awakening and self-discovery during which she’s inspired through sensual awareness and blossoms into a sexy, daring, provocative and more confident woman.

As the show begins we meet Bo with a short black and white film. Weary and defeated she falls asleep reading a book. When we zoom in on the book we discover she has fallen asleep reading a beautifully illustrated book of rhymes and fairy tales.  And suddenly she tumbles onto the stage entering the colorful world of PEEPSHOW.

Bo is whisked away by the Diva, whose powerhouse voice and supreme confidence carry a score of popular music and fuel high-end production numbers that are derived from popular fairy tales all told with a naughty twist.  It is the Diva who shows Bo a trick or two about life, men and love transforming the bookish girl into confident, sexy woman.

Tiger Sharks Now Lurk at Mandalay Bay

Two female tiger sharks now rule the waters of Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay.  The only tiger sharks available for viewing in the U.S., these exciting new additions can be identified by their distinct tiger-striped markings in the 1.6-million-gallon aquarium.

“We are delighted to unveil these powerful predators to our guests of Shark Reef Aquarium,” said Adrienne Rowland, the facility’s director.  “The tiger sharks demonstrate Shark Reef’s goal to raise awareness and appreciation of our world’s fascinating marine life.”

Attributing to the tiger sharks’ impressive reputation are their sharp, serrated teeth, powerful jaw and insatiable, non-discriminating appetite.  These sharks have been known to consume unusual items such as license plates, tires, baseballs and other debris – earning them the moniker “garbage cans of the sea.”

Currently, Shark Reef’s two tiger sharks are more than six feet in length, and the species can reach up to 14 feet in length.  The scavengers lurk in shallow, coastal waters in tropical and temperate regions such as Hawaii and Australia.

The tiger sharks join an impressive group of animals at Shark Reef Aquarium, a 90,560-square-foot, predator-based aquarium – the only one of its kind in North America.

Since its debut in 2000, Shark Reef Aquarium has become a must-see Las Vegas attraction and educational facility, where adults and children alike can enjoy and learn about more than 2,000 divinely dangerous animals including a rare Komodo dragon, a giant Pacific octopus, sharks, crocodiles and piranhas.

Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay is open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Sunday – Thursday; and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday.  Ticket prices are $16.95 for adults and $10.95 for children; children four and under are free.  Discounts are available for Nevada residents with valid ID.

NORM: Make room for new, bigger clubs.

Two major players in the Las Vegas nightclub scene are moving forward with new venues.

Rumors have been flying that Steve Wynn's upcoming megaclub, XS, in the Encore tower might be downsized from its massive 40,000-square-foot plan due to the sinking economy.

Not a chance, insiders say emphatically. Yes, it will be one of the biggest clubs in the country, but two-thirds of the square footage is outdoors. The party will move outside as the club fills up, instead of the daunting challenge of making a cavernous club look full.

The $2.2 billion, 2,034 room Encore is scheduled to open around Christmas.

Over at the Hard Rock Hotel, it's full speed ahead for the next generation of The Joint.

The new $49 million club will allow 3,000 for a seated show, 4,000 for other events. It's more than double the previous capacity.

It opens in mid-April with big-name opening night entertainment and will feature "some great new elements," said Yale Rowe, the Hard Rock's new senior vice president and general manager.

LENNY'S LAS VEGAS: Stations forges ahead with Aliante.

New Casino Opens: Despite the fact that several plans for new megaresorts and expansion at other Strip properties have been put on hold, Station Casinos went boldly ahead and opened its newest resort, the $662-million Aliante Station, in northwest Las Vegas at the corner of Aliante Parkway and the 215 freeway that circles our city.

Although the new property has the same look and feel of Red Rock Resort, the company's premier property at Charleston and 215, Aliante is on a smaller scale, with only 202 rooms. But the 80,000-square-foot casino has 2,554 slots, 40 table games, a high-limit area and a poker room.

It also boasts six restaurants , which are a blend of an old company favorite, company-owned restaurants and three new offerings. Pips Cucina & Wine Bar, the first restaurant by former Caesars Palace food and beverage director Rino Armeni, features many family recipes handed down through the generations and gathered by Armeni's mother, who traveled from Rome to see the restaurant.

Pip's is joined by Mexican restaurant Camacho's Cantina, Original Pancake House, T.G.I. Friday's and the company's own seafood and steakhouse MRKT Sea & Land, and Feast Buffet. Other amenities include a 16-screen movie theater, a food court and a pool. I was there opening night and liked the feel of the place as did the people I talked to who showed up at 10 p.m. when the doors opened to the public.

Lenny's Las Vegas:
Another "Only In Las Vegas" Offering: OK, you've had a long day, but promised the family you'd take them to a movie when you'd rather stay at home, relax and have a beer. Well, you're prayers have been answered. The Galaxy Cannery at the Cannery Hotel & Casino in North Las Vegas is now offering its patrons the opportunity to enjoy a beer with their popcorn.

This new twist began Nov. 14 with the opening of the new James Bond film, "Quantum of Solace" — somehow fitting, I think. It is the first movie theatre in Clark County to serve beer, but it will only be served in select theatres inside Galaxy Cannery daily after 6 p.m. You will have to be 21 and older to be permitted inside the theatres serving beer.

LENNY'S LAS VEGAS: Economy to blame for show, restaurant closings.

Dimming the Lights: I hate to see any shows or restaurants close in our town, but unfortunately, it sometimes happens, so here I go with two surprising closures. First of all, the high-energy production, "Stomp Out Loud" at Planet Hollywood will end its engagement on Jan. 4.

With visitor count down, and as we enter a traditionally slow winter, the decision was made to end the show’s 22-month run and possibly look for a smaller venue on the Strip. I’m told a lavish multi-million-dollar adult show starring a pop superstar and a siren of the small screen will replace it in a soon-to-be redesigned Planet Hollywood Showroom. The new show, of which I will soon have more details, will open next March.

Locals will get a break as they are being offered 2-for-1 tickets on the top two tiers ($79 and $99) for the remainder of the run. This bugs me a lot — these special for locals –  especially for Strip shows. I realize that all of our shows want to attract locals, but it’s the tourists who support the big shows on the Strip and they should be given a break as well. If you’re interested in seeing the show, I suggest you call and ask for the 2-for-1 ticket offer. If they refuse, let me know. In this economic climate, they would have to be fools to lose your business.

Interesting to note that "Stomp Out Loud" will close the same day as "Mamma Mia!" at Mandalay Bay, although that resort has already announced that "The Lion King" will replace the long-running hit. I still don’t understand the decision to pull the plug on "Mamma Mia!"

By the way, if you were planning on seeing "The Soprano’s Last Summer" at the Riviera, either get to see it before Nov. 18 — the day it closes there — or wait until it reopens at the Greek Isles on Dec. 2.

I am very saddened to report that Andre’s Downtown, a fixture in our town and in my opinion one of the best — if not the best — restaurants here, will be closing its Sixth Street location on New Year’s Eve. The other location in the Monte Carlo will remain open, but though the food is excellent there as well, it just isn’t the same — at least for me.

Andre’s has been around for almost 30 years, and was a favorite hangout for people like Frank Sinatra, Liza Minnelli, Joe Pesci, as well as Tony “The Ant” Spilotro, the Mob’s front man for many years here.

Drai’s popular with those up all night.
By Melissa Arseniuk/Las Vegas Sun

There’s nothing like the feel of the morning sun on your face as you walk out into a bright new day.

Especially when you realize, “Oh crap. I haven’t gone to bed yet.”

That fresh feeling quickly fades as the stale smell of last night’s party – the smoke, sweat and lord knows what else – lingers. You squint in the morning sunshine.

This is the inevitable experience that follows a night of nocturnal fun at an after-hours club.

The rest of the city is starting a new day before you put the last one to bed. Should you grab breakfast and join the land of the living as they get their days underway, or go find your bed, draw the blinds and get some sleep?

Why must producers say ‘Bombs away’?
By Joe Brown/Las Vegas Sun

In the line of duty as an entertainment reviewer for this paper, I recently witnessed two shows that redefined failure. Afterward, I had to wonder how things got to the point where, in spite of all evidence, the creators and producers pulled the trigger and said “Yes. This is ready to be seen, and we can in good conscience accept people’s money.”

Surely someone must have said at some point, “Um, this isn’t working.”

Or even “I don’t get it.”

Or “Iceberg ahead!”

The first and most infamous flop was “Criss Angel: Believe” at the Luxor, the $100 million collaboration between Cirque du Soleil and a TV magician, which continues to drain wallets and good will at the Luxor, and someday may be salvaged for parts. I won’t bother to review it again here, but if you want to read more, my review is on the paper’s Web site.

C’mon down: Vegas ‘Price is Right’ resembles television namesake. By Melissa Arseniuk.
Las Vegas Sun

Over the years “The Price is Right” has become a cultural phenomenon, unifying senior citizens, housewives, military personnel, so-called “Joe six packs,” college students and everyone in between in a frenzied cloud of anticipation and excitement.

“The Price is Right Live” aims to bring that same experience to Las Vegas and has been inviting people to “c’mon down” to Bally’s Las Vegas for the past three years.

The Vegas version of the CBS classic is a scaled-down incarnation of the televised original and features five of the program’s most popular pricing games – “Race Game,” “It’s In The Bag,” “Cliff Hanger,” “Hole In One,” and the universal favorite, “Plinko” – within a 90-minute show.

Neil Diamond tribute artist Jay White, who headlines at the Riviera, has launched a petition drive to have Diamond inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

“I was shocked to learn that Neil is not already in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,” White said. “Neil is one of the most successful singer-songwriters of the past half century. He has sold more than 120 million records worldwide and ranks third on the list of most successful adult contemporary artists in the history of the Billboard chart, behind only Elton John and Barbra Streisand. There’s no question he belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.”

White said Diamond fans can sign the petition at AmericasDiamondLive.com between now and Jan. 2 when the petition and signatures will be forwarded to the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. The Jan. 2 date coincides with a Las Vegas concert by Diamond.

Fans can also sign the petition at the Riviera during White’s performance at 7 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays.

They also can sign the petition at KSNE-FM 106.5, by going to ksne.com.

The Vegas radio station is giving away tickets to Diamond’s Jan. 2 concert as well as tickets to White’s show at the Riviera. Flamingo Hosts WORLD SERIES of BEER PONG Jan 1 - 5.

BPONG.COM will bring its world-renowned tournament, The World Series of Beer Pong IV (WSOBP) to  Flamingo Las Vegas

Jan. 1 -5. The five-day event is the largest event of its kind, where the winners will take home a grand prize of $50,000 and the coveted title of “Beer Pong World Champion.”

This year’s tournament marks the fourth annual competition and is expected to be even bigger and more competitive than years past. Last year’s tournament drew nearly 600 contestants from 39 states and three countries. Reigning champs Jeremy Hughes and Mike Orr are expected back this year to defend their seats on the beer pong throne.

Beer Pong, also widely known as Beirut, is a game that has gained immense popularity in recent years. Members of two-person teams attempt to lob Beer Pong balls (similar to table tennis balls) into the opposing team’s cups placed at the other end of a long table. The first team to land balls in each of the defending team’s cups is crowned winner. Cups are often filled with beer (but for the tournament, beer or water) and may be consumed by the players if they choose.

Dubbed  “the drinking game of choice for this century's twentysomething thinkers” by TIME Magazine, Beer Pong has proven to be a big hit not only on college campuses, but on the Las Vegas Strip as well.

“The Flamingo is really excited to host the WSOPB,” said Suzanne Trout, V.P. of Marketing for O’Sheas and Flamingo. "We introduced Beer Pong to the Las Vegas Strip a couple of years ago at O’Sheas Casino and it continues to be immensely successful for us; it's a pastime with a very loyal following."

The deadline to register for the WSOPB is Dec. 5. The WSOBP, in conjunction with Flamingo Las Vegas, offer a variety of registration options starting at $1,000 per team, which includes a four night stay at the center-Strip resort. The competition is open to both men and women 21 years and older. For additional details, registration information, and WSOBP tournament rules visit www.bpong.com. Seeing Red
Le Beaujolais nouveau est arrivé!
By: Leslie Frisbee/Las Vegas Magazine

Following a longtime tradition, which has resulted in worldwide wine and food festivities, at one minute past midnight on thursday, nov. 20, paris las vegas will light the eiffel tower red in celebration of the 2008 beaujolais nouveau.

What began as a local ritual in bistros and bars across the Beaujolais region and the city of Lyon in the 1930s, Beaujolais nouveau has inspired a nationwide fête proclaiming the wine's arrival with special deliveries via elephants and motorcycles, music, dancing and revelry.

Made from 100 percent Gamay grapes, known for their robust fruit flavor and low tannins, Beaujolais nouveau is light-bodied, fruity in quality and fresh on the palate. Recognized for its easy drinkability, the pale-purple wine complements a variety of gourmet and casual foods, giving it universal appeal. Harvested in Beaujolais, an area of west-central France, just south of the Burgundy wine region, Beaujolais nouveau is meant to be enjoyed young – it is suggested that vintages should be consumed by the May following its release.

French law declares that Beaujolais nouveau is not to be released before the third Thursday in November, just six weeks after the grapes have been harvested.

On Nov. 20, more than 2 million bottles of Beaujolais nouveau will have made their way to the U.S. by air and sea. And when it's all said and done, over the next few months, more than 65 million bottles, which is nearly half the region's total annual production, will be imbibed around the world, including Las Vegas.

Popping the cork on its second annual Beaujolais nouveau event, Vegas' version of the City of Lights will begin a weekend of merriment that includes uncorking ceremonies, complimentary tastings of this year's vintage and special events. The four-day celebration also features unique Beaujolais nouveau wine-pairing menus at Eiffel Tower Restaurant, Les Artistes Steakhouse and Mon Ami Gabi, presented by wine producer Georges Duboeuf.

The largest négociant of Beaujolais in the world and the most popular brand of French wine in the U.S., Duboeuf developed Les Vins Georges Duboeuf in 1964. Renowned for their quality, consistency and value, Les Vins Georges Duboeuf wines are sold in 120 countries across the world. Let the festivities begin!

Catching the Bus? Bring More Cash By Rick Garman

If you depend on the buses to get around Las Vegas you’ll need to keep a few more bucks out of the slot machines to make sure you can get back to your hotel.

Starting January 1 regular fares for city buses will go from $1.25 to $1.75 while the charge for the double-decker Deuce buses that troll The Strip will go up from $2 to $3. Day passes for the Deuce will go up to $7.

And that’s not the end of it. Fares will go up again in 2010.

Sales tax in the city helps to pay for the bus system and since tourism is down, sales tax is down and they need to come up with extra dough to cover the shortfall.

Vegas4Visitors Weekly Awards By Rick Garman

The I Need to Rest My Head on Something Cool Award of the Week goes to the folks at Penthouse magazine who are reportedly looking to buy a hotel on The Strip. The idea of that makes my head hurt.

The Second I Need to Rest My Head on Something Cool Award of the Week goes to Paula Abdul who is rumored to be developing a cheerleading themed show for Las Vegas that she would star in. Granted, it was the National Enquirer that started the rumor but they were right about the whole John Edwards thing so I’m not counting this one out.

The Told Ya So Award of the Week goes to me for telling you that this might be the best year in a long time to try to come to Vegas for New Year’s. After the piece I ran in my column a couple of weeks about lower room rates than usual for the holiday, I’ve gotten a bunch of e-mails from readers telling me that they have been getting FREE offers through the players clubs of various hotels. I’ve gotten them to – trust me, that’s usually unheard of unless you are a serious gambler.

The Family Show Award of the Week goes to “Jubilee!,” the topless show at Bally’s that will offer a “covered” edition for the first time in its nearly three decades of titillation. The 7:30 show on Saturdays will be “safe” for kids 13 and up.

Updated Hotel Review:Mandalay Bay BY Rick Garman

Named after an obscure reference in a Rudyard Kipling novel, Mandalay Bay was originally billed as the hip, happening, luxury link in the Mandalay Resorts corporate chain that included Circus Circus, Excalibur, and Luxor. The goal, as I understood it, was to create a classy but fun resort that would satisfy a younger demographic looking for an upscale place to party and play. Now that the hotel (and its siblings) has a new master, the same one that runs the luxury Bellagio and the supposedly hip Treasure Island, the mission statement of Mandalay Bay has grown a bit more murky. The only reason I bring all this up is because while the hotel used to draw a younger, sometimes annoyingly younger, crowd things have "aged up" a bit and the hotel now feels more mature - and I mean that in a good way.

Forget what they say when they describe the theme as 1800's Burma. If you know what that means then you're more educated that I am. The easiest way to describe it would be a subtle South Seas look with lots of heavy stonework, lush foliage, and myriad tropical touches.

In a welcome change of pace, you don't need to go through the casino area to get to the elevators or from the elevators to the pool area. I know that flies in the face of conventional wisdom since most places hope you'll start gambling the moment you walk in the door, but when going for the luxury market this is key - and quite a convenience to boot. If you're driving in and choose to self-park, you do have quite a hike from the parking garage to the front desk through the casino but it's not as bad as it is in some other hotels (I'm looking at you Caesars Palace).

The standard rooms are comfortable, with each one covering about 550 square feet. This makes them fairly typical in terms of size with the exception of the bathrooms that are generously proportioned. Each has a dual vanity, separate tub and shower, and a private water closet (room with a toilet).

Nice touches include the floor-to-ceiling windows that offer panoramic vistas, iron and ironing board, hair dryers, multiple phones (desk, bedside, bathroom), high speed Internet (for a fee), iPod docking bedside clock radios, mini-bars, and dual lighted closets. The decor has been updated to that sort of retro-sleek look that is all the rage these days - think oversized padded headboards, crisp white linens, low slung couches, and other mid-century modern touches. The overall effect is comfortable, casual, and inviting.

The Gold rooms are an up-level offering in terms of size and price and include about 200 more square feet that accommodates a larger sitting area and a small dining table.

There are a variety of other rooms available from small junior suites to massive two-story affairs that wrap around the entire end of the wings offering 180-degree views of Las Vegas. Amenities and prices go up accordingly.

And if these rooms don't satisfy there are actually two other hotels that are part of the same property - THEhotel and The Four Seasons.

The casino area is one of the loveliest in town with high ceilings, good spacing between the slots and table games, and a pleasing lack of flashing commotion. In the center is a large lounge/nightclub and there are several restaurants, bars, and additional lounges scattered around the premises.

There are several restaurants, a nice buffet, a showroom now featuring the hit Broadway musical Mamma Mia (through January of 2009 and then "The Lion King" in April of 2009), an arena for big concerts and sporting events, lots of shops, a large health club/spa, and convention and meeting space.

Of special note is Mandalay Beach, the resort's beautiful pool area. Open only to guests of the three hotels on site, this gigantic playground offers three pools, several whirlpools, a lazy river ride, and a full sand beach fronting a huge wave pool capable of generating seven-foot swells. You can rent cabanas, surf and boogie boards, and inner tubes and get beverage and food service from the beach bar or even gamble in the small poolside casino. They have included a stage overlooking the beach and wave pool for concerts. I have to say it is one of the most appealing pool areas in town although if you're not a fan of the kids you may want to go elsewhere since this pool area draws a lot of them.

The service is top notch in just about every area.

I know I have to let go of the "good old days" when you could get a nice room for $25 in Las Vegas, but it still hurts my heads (and wallet) to have to pay the kinds of prices they are charging here. Expect a minimum of 120 on very slow weekdays with an average in the $150-250 range and another $100 to $150 on the weekends.

Mandalay Bay has become one of the top hotels on The Strip for their combination of luxurious touches and excellent service at competitive prices (for what they offer). If you can afford it, go for it.

Updated Show Review:Penn & Teller By Rick Garman

I honestly don't know what title to assign to Penn & Teller's show, now playing at The Rio. I suppose yes, it's a magic show but there's no way you can just leave it at that. That doesn't cover the comedy, the history, and most importantly the fascinating deconstruction and reconstruction of the genre that these two masters bring to the stage. They take a magic act, rip it apart, put it all back together again, and then still amaze you with stuff that can't be possible even though they pretty much just showed you how they did it. The magic of the illusion - the creation of what amounts to, essentially, a big con game - is what sets Penn & Teller apart from the rest of the crowd that used to be dominated by Siegfried and Roy and turns this show into a Vegas "must-see."

You probably know Penn & Teller even if their names aren't immediately recognizable. You've seen Penn (the "big guy") and Teller (the "little guy") on a bunch of commercials, game shows, reality competitions, and TV specials as well.

In case you're not hip to their act, Penn is the voice of not only a billion commercials but their show as well - Teller doesn't speak. But Penn has enough to say for the both of them as he takes the audience on a journey through the world of magic, cluing them into the fact that it's all just a big sham. Of course we all know that the woman isn't really getting sawed in half, so to speak, but part of the art of illusion has always been trying to create the feeling that it really is happening - that the woman really is somehow split into two pieces and then magically put back together again.

Of course with Penn & Teller they saw the woman in half, show you how the trick is done, and then take it to a completely different level that I won't ruin by explaining here but just trust me when I say it's shocking, funny, and more than a little gross.

This is a recurring theme with their act; exposing the mechanics of magic and then still astounding you with it. In some cases they'll perform an illusion and then go back and do it again with all of the smoke and mirrors exposed.

But the amazing thing about these guys and their show is that even though you've just been let in on the con, you're still suckered by it. Even on tricks they just gave a behind the scenes peek at, the audience still sits there in amazement as if none of that ever happened.

Their justifiably righteous indignation about the con artists of magic and the so-called mentalists (psychics, mediums, etc.) is at once refreshing and somehow risqué. They name names, call it a load of crap (although they use a different word), and then do the exact same type of "mind-reading" tricks that made others famous, causing more than a few dropped jaws even though they are flat out telling people that they are being scammed.

And then, just in case the audience is feeling too full of itself with their behind the curtain peek, Penn & Teller will perform an illusion without explaining how it’s done and the amazement level goes through the roof.

The brilliant aspect of their deconstruction of the magic act is that they are not asking you to be willing participants in the illusion, believing that there was no proverbial rabbit in the hat a moment ago. Instead they are daring you to try to figure out how they do it. Where are the wires? What's the diversion that is keeping you from seeing me palm that card? You know it's all a trick and yet look… he just caught a bullet in his teeth!

Penn & Teller's show is bizarre, funny, fascinating, thrilling, challenging, frustrating, and one of the most entertaining experiences in Vegas. Go see it.

Hotel Preview: Aliante Station By Rick Garman

The newest hotel-casino opens in Las Vegas on November 11, 2008, but it is not a place that most visitors will ever go. If it's as nice as sister properties Red Rock Resort and Green Valley Ranch (which it reportedly is) then that's quite a shame because these are the kinds of hotels that a lot of people complain don't exist anymore: fashionable and fun but affordable. Located on the far north side of town, Aliante Station is the latest in the very successful chain of Station Casinos, which includes the aforementioned Red Rock and Green Valley plus Sunset Station, Texas Station, Boulder Station, Fiesta Henderson, and more. It falls somewhere in the upper middle of their "fanciness" spectrum but is on the lower end in terms of price.

The town of Scottsdale, Arizona keeps coming up in discussions of the overall design scheme. Think clean and simple lines, lots of earth tones, and extensive use of natural stone, wood, and fibers to give it a desert resort feel. Red Rock is a masterpiece of form and texture and Aliante has a similar vibe.

The hotel has 202 rooms ranging in size from 400 square feet to more than 1,000 for the luxury suites. Each room features a flat panel television in the bedroom and another embedded in the bathroom mirror, iPod docking station, CD player, high-speed Internet, minibar, and all of the usual amenities you find in Vegas rooms like hair dryers, irons and boards, and the like.

Rates are expected to start at around $59 a night, which is crazy cheap for a room of that size with that kind of appointments.

The casino features more than 2,500 slot machines, most multi-denomination (pennies and up) and many that are multi-function so you can play a bunch of different games without having to move. More than 40 table games run the gamut from blackjack to baccarat and a separate poker room featuring low buy-ins. A race and sports book completes the gaming offerings.

As usual for a Station property the place is packed with restaurants: MRKT is their signature steakhouse; Pips serves Italian fare; Camacho's Cantina has Mexican specialties; The Original Pancake House has your breakfasts covered; and TGI Friday's does, well, just about everything. There is also be an edition of their beloved Feast Buffet and a food court with a Capriotti's, Dunkin Donuts, Panda Express, and more.

Several bars and lounges are scattered around the property and although there is no formal nightclub the bar in the center of the casino will have entertainment and dancing.

For entertainment there's a 600-seat showroom, a 16-screen movie theater, and a small video game arcade. There is a large pool area but no spa so you'll have to massage yourself. Wait… that came out wrong.

Sounds fantastic, right? So what's the downside; the thing that will keep most Vegas visitors from ever visiting this particular hotel? The location.

Aliante Station is in North Las Vegas. To get there from The Strip you would hop on I-15 and go north about 13 miles to the I-215 Beltway, which for those in the know is the exit right before the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Then you take the beltway west about 8 or 9 miles to Aliante Parkway - the hotel is just off the freeway. Another option would be to take I-15 to I-95 near Downtown then take I-95 north to the beltway and go east several miles. There are surface street options as well that I won't bore you with here.

But the bottom line is that if there is no traffic the hotel is a solid 15-20 minute drive from The Strip. But of course there is ALWAYS traffic in Las Vegas so you can figure to double that on most days.

That's a barrier that most tourists won't be able to overcome. But those that do may find some rich rewards.

Monti-licious by Monte Rock from The Vegas Eye.

My head is still reeling from the Criss Angel show Believe at the Luxor. Seems like controversy has surrounded this project from day one.  As I wrote last week the show has some redeeming qualities even though it hasn't made me believe yet. Cirque or not, opportunity for improvement remains with Believe but only time will tell.

I've written in my column that I'm a great fan of David Copperfield because he's a magician's magician. It's not just about the illusions, it's that David makes you believe it.  It must be magic!  David works all year long and all over the world which has made him one of the wealthiest magician alive.  Some have tried to  include David in scandal yet he remains the epitome of what magic is about.  Seems everybody wants to be Houdini but there was only one.  Enough said.

Alianti Station, the latest creation of Station Casinos, opened 11/11 at 11:11 PM.  This was not by chance either.  It was a great evening and everything was well presented.  Lori Nelson did a great job for Alianti.  While there I ran into Danny and Robin Greenspun who were divine and gracious as ever.  The drive north to Alianti is worth a visit, it's a marvelous sight.

Everyone has heard about the Sands Corporation putting a hold on some of their projects around the world, but let's not get too excited.  After all Sheldon Adelson and his wife are at the top of the list when it comes to vision and creation.  Just look at the Venetian and the Palazzo. Maybe they had to dip into their own pockets for some loose change, so what!   Adelsons have become Las Vegas visionaries, and one of the most charitable couples int the world–  and my dime's on them.

The Sands Corporation, the Boyd Corporation and others will make it through this stretch of slow.  There have been reported employee buy-outs and some layoffs while properties trim the fat. Sands has laid off 11,000 construction wokers in the Asian market.  Station Casinos and IGT have also allegely laid off employees.

Together with my staff we dropped in at the Sahara to see Raw Talent.  The show reminds me of an eclectic but wonderful presentation that involves passion, voodoo and fabulous Latin music.  Pedro Dikan Castano and Deyamira Diaz Fernandez , formerly of Havana Nights are outstanding lead singers in the production.  Raw Talent,  like Havana Nights before it,  definitely has something.  Let's face it… music,  passion,  beautiful costumes, dancing and many great dancers….. what's not to like?

After many years Legends in Concert will find a new home at Harrah's starting December 15.  The show has been a mainstay at Imperial Palace but is expected to draw even larger crowds at Harrah's Showroom.  Legends has been home to a lot of talent over the years.

A couple of months ago I reported that Stomp Out Loud at Planet Hollywood was closing.  My facts were wrong at the time.  I can't always be right but I can now report with confidence Stomp Out Loud is closing.  It's closing the same day the curtain comes down on Mamma Mia at Mandalay Bay.   The Sopranos at the Riviera is also another closing.  Just in, Dick Feeney's Viva Las Vegas closing this week after a long run at the Stratosphere and then at the Plaza. Which one is next?

November 16, 2008 Vegas Value Report

Brett's Vegas Views By Jackie Brett

Philip Fortenberry, a magnificent solo pianist, improvisational composer and cast member of "Jersey Boys," has debuted his new intimate acoustic cabaret-style piano performance, "Liberace and Me," for a limited six-month engagement through March 23, 2009, at the Liberace Museum in the 75-seat Cabaret Showroom. Shows are at 1 p.m. three days a week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday. Tickets are $17.50, call 702-798-5595 ext. 14. There will be fill in acts between Dec. 23-Jan. 4 when Fortenberry will be re-appearing in the on-stage orchestra of "The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber" at The Kennedy Center.

"Liberace and Me," offers Fortenberry's loving respect for the spirit and legacy of Liberace and the impact he had on his life and career. Fortenberry opens with Liberace's signature arrangement of "Chopsticks," while seated at Mr. Showmanship's own nine-foot Concert Grand Baldwin. He weaves the music around his own life story and personal journey as a pianist from rural Mississippi to Broadway, from recitals and talent shows, to command performances for royals and dignitaries. For 45 minutes, Fortenberry acknowledges Liberace's empowering influence and shares his own original compositions, classical selections, and Broadway tunes. One of the many highlights of his performance is his offering of an original "Portrait in Music," an improvisational gift to the audience created in the moment that echoes Liberace's spirit of spontaneity. He closes with a nostalgic rendition of Liberace's famous, "I'll Be Seeing You."

Speaking with Fortenberry afterwards, he said, "Music becomes a tool to open a soul." Playing by memory since age 4, he adds, "My hands are a slave to what I've already heard." He's truly amazing!

Frankie's Tiki Room will open on Thursday, Dec. 4, with a tiki environment complemented by traditional carvings, original Polynesian art, a full bar and gaming. The new 24-hour place will be located at 1712 W. Charleston Blvd. Frankie's founder is P Moss, the creator of the infamous Double Down Saloon located in Las Vegas and New York City.

Guests will be greeted by tiki statues. The interior has been designed and is being built by Bamboo Ben, the world's foremost tiki room designer. Other contributing carvers include: Tiki Bosko, best known locally for carving the large tikis and Polynesian statues for the Tropicana in the 1990s; Crazy Al Evans, credited for his sculpture known as "Polynesian Pop" and for creating Frankie's signature tiki, a monstrous island warrior; and Leroy Schmaltz, the godfather of all tiki carvers recognized for creating the biggest existing tiki statue in Tahiti.

Frankie's will offer a drink menu featuring 15 original exotic drinks, five traditional tiki drinks and eight original souvenir tiki mugs that will cost $15 each or $20 with a drink.

Had another opportunity to see Larry G. Jones do his "Superstar Voices in Concert" show in the tiny showroom at the Royal Resort on Convention Center Drive. His show is a hidden gem. Tickets are $24-$34 and Cosmo's Café & Ristorante also located at the Royal offers a special three-course concert dinner menu. For information, call 800-595-4849.

The much anticipated $100 million production marrying magician Criss Angel with Cirque du Soleil's highly interpretative creativity has opened at the Luxor. It's almost easier to say what the show isn't than what it is.

For Angel's avid fans of his A&E cable "Mindfreak" street-wise show, this is totally different because it takes on the melodic, extremely-stylized, artistic Cirque approach to theater. Angel appears throughout the show after a "dreamscape" is established when the illusionist is electrocuted and carried off stage on a gurney. From then on different scenarios take place making way for giant rabbits, monsters and Angel escaping death in pursuit of his true love.

Illusions are buried inside of flowing scenes in such a manner that many viewers believe there are no magic tricks in the show. In traditional Cirque exploration, there are elaborate scenes like the wedding where the ghostly bride emerges and slowly moves downstage in a dress with an endless train that is raised into a vertical wall that Angel mystically walks down. Subtlety is key and slow moving is the pacing. The show is best described as artistic. Tickets range from $68.40-$168.50; call 702-262-4400.

Irishman Keith Barry has coined the word "hypnomagician" to describe his multi-talented act incorporating elements of magic, hypnosis, mentalism, psychology and humor. He's performing his one-man show at Planet Hollywood through Nov. 27 before he tours until next March when he plans to return to Las Vegas.

While Barry, 32, performs many standard tricks, his humorous approach is so fresh and new that you don't even know it. He involves dozens of audience members in his show and selects them randomly by tossing out jumbo foam darts and giant Frisbee-like discs. His tricks and illusions do astound and amaze but the real winning ingredient is his tremendous likeability. Tickets for his 9:30 p.m. shows are $55, call 474-4000.

Binion's downtown, which is iconic among poker players for its unmatched legacy in the game, has opened its brand-new poker room featuring 10 tables in a contemporary setting with deals such as a max rake of $3 on all live games, $2 comps per hour of live poker play, table-side food service and special room rates.

Historic photos are spaced around the room with eleven 42- and 50-inch plasma televisions. The Binion's Gallery of Champions and Poker Hall of Fame are located in the upscale concierge area, where available games are presented on electronic boards. The new 24-hour room is flanked by two full-service bars featuring cocktails and video poker.

Since the acquisition of Binion's by TLC Casino Enterprises in March 2008, Binion's has opened a new race and sports book, introduced the new Benny's Bullpen Sports Bar & Cigar Lounge, revamped its $1 Million Display, added new table games, and reconfigured the casino floor. In addition, the property is nearing 100 percent completion to Ticket In Ticket Out technology on all slot and video poker machines and remodeling all 366 guest rooms.

Singer T. Fox, who five years ago was working at the Tropicana in an open area, is now performing on the open outside patio at Trader Vic's at Planet Hollywood, which is an extension of the restaurant and overlooks the Strip. His free "Passion Patio Nights" show is from 8 p.m. to midnight, Thursday through Saturday.

AJ's Steakhouse located inside the Hard Rock is closing its doors after 10 years in business on Saturday, Dec. 13, at midnight. As a farewell until then, AJ's is inviting guests to "Dine Like Its 1999" with menu items priced equivalent to the time when the restaurant opened in 1999. In addition, AJ's will bring back the trademark grand piano every Friday and Saturday night from 9 p.m. to closing with local pianist Peter Radd playing signature tunes from the 1960s.

SHOW REVIEW: 'Fitz of Laughter'
'Fitz of Laughter' a reflection of old Vegas with card tricks, mentalism.
By: Mike Weatherford/Las Vegas Review Journal

Every night, Kevin Burke performs "Defending the Caveman," a comic one-man play that expands the horizons of Las Vegas entertainment.

Then he heads a couple of doors down to another Fremont Street casino and performs the kind of show more people still come to Las Vegas to see.

You know, the old-fashioned variety act with magic, comedy and mind reading. And if the comedian lasciviously eats fire while winking at a gal in the front row? Or bonks people from the audience on the head with swimming pool "noodle" toys? Better still.

It may push the analogy to say "Caveman," accessible in its own right, is like eating your vegetables. But "Fitz of Laughter" is definitely the dessert.

ALIANTE STATION: Variety is the key
Aliante Station offers many restaurants, including steakhouse, buffet, fast food.

By HEIDI KNAPP RINELLA/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Dining options at the new Aliante Station are as multifaceted as the casino-resort's neighbors: They include a first venture for a veteran Las Vegas food-and-beverage executive and a first venture in the valley for a family that owns a small Southern California chain, plus the requisite steakhouse, buffet, a TGI Friday's, an outlet of The Original Pancake House and a food court with varied choices.

Pips Cucina & Wine Bar is from Rino Armeni, who was vice president of food and beverage at Caesars Palace from 1989 to 1995 and marketing director for Southern Wine & Spirits until this January, when he resigned to open a twofold business of restaurant operations and consulting.

Armeni, 58, said the desire to open his own place was born of his passion for the industry.

"Secondly, because I want to make it right," he said. "I want to open a restaurant that is everything that people's expectations are."

MIKE WEATHERFORD: 'Legends' leaving Imperial Palace
From: The Las Vegas Review Journal

Legends in Concert" is moving right next door, but it's still a significant move after 25 years at the Imperial Palace.

"It will be a very sad night" on Dec. 13, says Brian Brigner, chief operating officer for producer On Stage Entertainment. But it will be happy two nights later, when "Legends" opens its holiday edition at Harrah's Las Vegas.

While the seating capacity of the two rooms is almost a wash — about 600 seats — Brigner says he embraced the chance "to go to Harrah's namesake property, which is a nice branded calling card."

"Legends" stands to boost activity in the showroom now used by Rita Rudner for about 130 dates per year. The celebrity impersonation revue will run 51 weeks per year, with nine to 12 shows each week, depending on Rudner's schedule.

In January, "Legends" plans to add a new set by "American Idol" production designer Andy Walmsley, who also has done Las Vegas work for The Scintas and "V — The Ultimate Variety Show."

"I want there to be some 'wow' factor that people don't anticipate," Brigner says, and it will be easier to relaunch "Legends" in a new location.

Nobody still believes the Imperial Palace will soon vanish in the current economy. But less than a year ago, when Brigner says he started talks about the move, the IP operated under constant rumors that it would be demolished or remodeled beyond recognition. Harrah's still offers "some good security" in a multiyear deal, he says.

Harrah's management isn't ready to say what will replace the revue at the Imperial Palace. But the answer needs to be impressive since "Legends" was very nearly the casino's entire identity, including "dealertainers" in celebrity costumes at the tables.

NORM: Topless revue to try covering up.

Now here's a switch in a city founded on the principle of more is better.

Beginning today Bally's long-running topless revue "Jubilee!" is going to test the waters for a not-topless performance every Saturday.

The 7:30 p.m. show will be covered "to see what the demand is," said Michael Weaver, vice president of marketing for Bally's.

"We've kicked around the idea for a couple years," said Weaver, because some ticket buyers balked when they heard the show was topless.

"We decided to test a covered show to see how large an audience is out there for a covered. If the numbers go up we'll keep it," Weaver said.

The move allows people age 13 and up to see the show. Showgoers will have to be 18 to see the topless version.

NORM: Penthouse wants piece of the Strip.

Penthouse CEO Marc Bell is going public with plans to buy a "significant property" on the Las Vegas Strip and join the casino wars.

"The best time to buy is in a down economy," said the South Florida financier, whose business plan includes tying in his 10,000-Web site empire, most of them social networking sites, to generate business.

"We have no intention to rebrand the name of the hotel. We would like to see a Penthouse casino presence and a Penthouse pool presence," Bell told Vegas Confidential during an interview at Planet Hollywood Resort in what is known as the "Stripper suite."

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Strip should think small

It was one of those (far from rare) moments of repeating myself and hoping no one else standing near Irish magician Keith Barry had heard this rant before.

Barry was talking about performing in the 1,500-seat "Stomp Out Loud" theater, when his cool but visually spare act would play better in a room one-third the size.

The Strip doesn't think small enough," I said once more of the show venues built in recent years.

I used to encourage designers of new Strip hotel projects to check out the classic-Vegas Suncoast showroom. Now I would direct them way, way north to the new Access Showroom in Aliante Station.

Sheryl Crow christened the room Wednesday. If she almost seemed outclassed by her surroundings, I can only imagine how Bret Michaels and his charm-school ladies will come off next Saturday.
