Celine set for 2010 return to Caesars by Robin Leach/Vegas Luxe Life.

Mega-successful Canadian superstar singer Celine Dion is coming home to headline at Caesars Palace. Vegas DeLuxe got an unofficial but solidly reliable confirmation that she will resume alternating performances with singers Bette Midler and Cher after Sir Elton John winds up his current contract. There’s even a good possibility that to welcome her back to the Colosseum at Caesars, there will be a one-night-only concert featuring all three divas on the same stage at the same time!

But first 40-year-old Celine, who has a home out at Lake Las Vegas, wants to try for a new baby. She told talk show host Oprah Winfrey that once her current world tour ends in just five months time — next March — she and husband Rene Angelil will attempt fertility treatments again. She became pregnant in 2000 after six years of trying.

MIKE WEATHEFORD: 'Stomp' closing in January.

Stomp Out Loud" will beat its last trash can at Planet Hollywood on Jan. 4, though producers hope to move the percussive revue to a smaller venue.

"We've done pretty well there, but it's a big theater," says Scott Zeiger, whose Base Entertainment owns and operates the 1,500-seat theater inside Planet Hollywood.

The show is doing respectable numbers at one-third capacity, but "it really belongs in a smaller, more intimate space," Zeiger says. "Stomp" is adaptable to other showroom options around town — the Rio? Harrah's Las Vegas? — because it doesn't require a fly loft.

The Planet Hollywood edition opened in March 2007, expanding the set design and cast size of the long-running off-Broadway hit (called simply "Stomp"), which runs in a 400-seat venue. But only in a couple of moments did the new version really flare out into Vegas-sized spectacle and take advantage of its expanded staging.

Zeiger says Base soon will announce a new show for the theater next spring, "something that more properly fills the space." He wouldn't spill the beans, other than to say it's not Mariah Carey, who has been linked to the property.

Producers are so confident in their ability to reopen "Stomp" by the end of next year that they are storing all the junkyard bric-a-brac that adorns the theater and lobby in a local warehouse.

"Stomp" closes the same day as "Mamma Mia!" at Mandalay Bay. Zeiger predicts winter will be a cold season for Las Vegas entertainment. In fact, he's afraid it's going to be "scary bad."

"I hope I'm wrong," he adds. But either way, "We don't need to drib and drabble on" through the slow months.

Faced with a 23% year-over-year drop in revenue, Riviera CEO William Westerman is saying "no" to any expenditures not absolutely necessary to keep the casino-hotel open, which includes scrapping $4.3 million to finish renovating the Riv's hotel rooms. So far this year, Riviera Holdings has eked out a modest profit, largely thanks to the retirement of debt. "We've survived 53 years, and we have a healthy cash position and we have a very excellent financial package of loans," Westerman told investors.

After announcing third-quarter profits of $244 million a year ago, Harrah's Entertainment today reported a 3Q08 loss of $130 million. CEO Gary Loveman appears to be looking for rescue in the form of legalized online poker, telling a conference call that the chances of that happening are better with the new Congress, due to changes in committee chairmanships.

Negotiations between FX Real Estate & Entertainment and Elvis Presley Enterprises have collapsed, putting what looks like the final nail in the coffin of an ultra-high-end, Presley-themed resort FX had hoped to build at the southeast corner of Harmon Avenue and the Strip. The place that was poker before poker was cool has opened a new room. Binion's has opened a 10-table room that advertises a max rake of $3 on all games, a comp rate of $2-per-hour, tableside food service, and special room rates for players. The room is located near the front of the casino on the old Mint (west) side.

According to a profile of its top executive in today's LV Review-Journal, the Speedway casino has already changed its name to Lucky Club (we thought it was pending). The marquee will be changed in December. And what are the chances of having two consecutive Today's News stories about new places with the name Lucky('s)?

Top Ten Casino Tips: November 2008 By Henry Tamburin

1. Casino business is down everywhere because of the poor economy.  Check the web site of your favorite casino to find special deals being rolled out by casinos to attract customers. This includes cheaper hotel rates, special casino promotions, and special meal deals. November and December is historically been the slowest for casinos and this year; with the economy in the pits, the deals will be especially juicy but you better book ASAP.

2. Here’s another tip on how to find great hotel deals in Vegas: go to www.lasvegasadvisor.com and click on the FREE Vegas Coupon banner on left side of home page.  You’ll be amazed at some of the deals available at the top hotels on the Strip.

Want to know which casinos in Vegas have the best video poke machines? Go to www.lasvegasadvisor.com and click on Best Video Poker.

4.If you play Three Card Poker, you should only make the Play wager if your hand contains a Queen-6-4 or higher rank.

5.Want to enjoy a fantastic three-course gourmet lunch on your next trip to Vegas? Go to www.rosemarysrestaurant.com, click on Current Promotions, then click on the $23 lunch promo. This restaurant is a landmark in Vegas and you be delighted with the food and service at a price that can’t be beat.

6.Check out Jean Scott’s blog on www.lasvegasadvisor.com. She often posts about special deals that she runs across in Vegas, which can save you lots of money.

7.The casino that is closest to the Las Vegas Strip that offers higher paying slot and video poker machines is the Palms casino located on Flamingo Ave (across from Rio).

8.The South Point casino located south of Mandalay Bay on the Strip returns 0.3% cash for video poker play (they also offer two times points from time-to-time, which gives you a whopping 0.6% cashback). They have quite a lot of full pay video poker machines, including full pay deuces wild, plus lots of casino promotions. This is where my wife and I currently play video poker in Vegas. Their buffet is also one of the best in Vegas, and so is their 75-cent hot dog in the sports book.

9.There are only three casinos in Las Vegas that still offer a good old fashion single deck pitch game of blackjack where a blackjack pays 3-2: the El Cortez, Four Queens, and Western casinos, all located downtown. The casinos on the Strip have single deck games but pay only 6-5 for a blackjack. Stay away from these games.

10. Many casinos offer special comps or multiple points for machine play which they will text to your cell phone. You just go to the Player’s Club and give them your cell phone number (for example one casino in Mississippi recently text me that I can have 7x points on a specific day … a teriffic deal in a casino that offers full pay jacks-or-better progressive machines.

Paris Hilton debuts new film in Las Vegas.
By: Melissa Arseniuk/Las Vegas Sun

Paris Hilton may have launched her acting career with a scandalous sex tape but her latest foray into the world of legitimate film made its Las Vegas debut Thursday at Planet Hollywood.

A handful of other “Repo the Genetic Opera” stars – Alexa Vega (“Spy Kids”), Kevin Ogilvie (a.k.a. Nivek Ogre from the industrial rock band Skinny Puppy), and Bill Moseley (“Halloween,” “Grindhouse”) – joined Hilton on the red carpet.

Good Charlotte guitarist Benji Madden was also there to support his girlfriend of nearly a year.

A special post-screening soirée was held across the casino floor at Privé nightclub, where the stars mixed and mingled after the show.

SHOW REVIEW: 'Criss Angel Believe'

It's sort of hard to 'Believe': In his new show, fans might be wondering if Criss Angel is still there.
By MIKE WEATHERFORD/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Midway through his new show, Criss Angel turns and asks his audience the night's big question: "Are you still there?"

He probably meant it as, are the fans he made with his slam-bang "Mindfreak" stunt-magic hanging on for this new career left turn; a journey through a Cirque du Bizarro ballet?

But the fans might be asking him the same question from their seats. It looks like their guy (most of the time, anyway), and talks like him. But is he still there?

So it goes with "Criss Angel Believe," which officially was unveiled at Luxor on Halloween. It's the shotgun marriage of Criss Angel, sort of, and Cirque du Soleil, kind of, where both seem to have their hands tied by new rules. Neither seem completely comfortable.

More here:
http://www.lvrj.com/news/33685929.html

NORM: Angel's belief in 'Believe' is strong.

Criss Angel believes in "Believe.

""We're incredibly proud and pleased," he said, with the magic show he created with Cirque du Soleil and helped launch Friday in front of a VIP crowd at the Luxor.

In a wide-ranging exclusive interview in his dressing room, Angel responded to some of the concerns I've heard, from angst over a bloodied bunny to the show's sexual and darker overtones.

The interview, our first meeting since April, was an extended olive branch on his part. He picked up the telephone about 10 days ago and we mutually agreed we regretted some harsh words in the aftermath of a public incident after the Miss U.S.A. pageant at Planet Hollywood Resort.

DOUG ELFMAN: New Criss Angel show is unbelievably bad, sad.

Wooooooooow. Criss Angel's new Cirque du Soleil show is terrrrrrible.

I had heard firsthand from some people who had seen "Believe" that it was abysmal and maybe unfixable, creatively. So my expectations were rock-bottom low (although open-minded), when I saw it Friday on opening night. And yet, it was EVEN WORSE than how it was described to me.

How bad could it be? Oh my God! Let me see if I remember how to spell this: "D.I.S.A.S.T.E.R."

CASINOS MARKET TO GAYS, LESBIANS.
Group spends $64.5 billion yearly in U.S.

By ARNOLD M. KNIGHTLY/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

No matter what California voters decide today on Proposition 8 — a state constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages — Harrah's Entertainment plans to continue marketing to gay and lesbian travelers.

And why not? As a group, gay and lesbian travelers spend $64.5 billion annually in the United States, data from the U.S. Department of Commerce and a study by Community Marketing Inc., a gay market research group, show.

"(Harrah's) realizes there's a demographic here that if you simply acknowledge they exist, that you have a little respect for them, they will be loyal," said Jeff Garofalo, a Las Vegas representative for the Human Rights Campaign, a national lobbying group. "If you know you're not going to face discrimination when you walk through the door, that goes a long way."

Since a state court legalized gay and lesbian marriages in California in June, Harrah's has increased its advertising to promote wedding packages for gays at Paris Las Vegas.

Lenny's Las Vegas by Len Butcher/Las Vegas Review Journal

Get ready for some laughs as The Comedy Festival returns November 20-22 to Caesars Palace in Las Vegas for its fourth year. Scheduled to appear at this year’s event are headliners Jerry Seinfeld, Ellen DeGeneres, Dane Cook, Katt Williams, Tracy Morgan and Jeff Dunham, who will be joined by Mike Epps, David Alan Grier, The Kids in the Hall, Russell Peters, Jim Breuer, Andrew Dice Clay, Jim Norton and John Oliver. In addition, Caliente Comedy will feature comedians Gabriel Iglesias, Pablo Francisco and Anjelah Johnson.

In addition to the comedy stars appearing in The Colosseum, the Palace Ballroom and the Augustus Ballroom, the Festival will showcase more than 25 up-and-coming comedians in the LOL Lounge (located in the Emperors Ballroom).

Tickets are now on sale and can be purchased for individual shows and packages online at thecomedyfestival.com, by phone at (877) TCF-FEST or in person at the Box Office at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace. Exclusive VIP packages are available online or by calling The Colosseum box office at (702) 866-1409.

One of the best shows in town is undoubtedly Jersey Boys, performing at the Palazzo, the Venetian’s sister property in Las Vegas. And now the hit musical about Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, is offering what it calls the ABSOLUT BEST SEATS IN THE HOUSE VIP Package.

Here’s what you get if you purchase the package: a complimentary ABSOLUT specialty cocktail and access to a private entrance into the theater through a VIP hallway that features memorabilia from The Four Seasons and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame; a full-color, oversized Jersey Boys Las Vegas souvenir program to remember their special night; and a seat in the front orchestra section. Not too shabby, but it’s gonna cost ya. The package runs $235 per person, plus tax. OUCH!!!

Coast Casinos makes things easier for players.
Despite the state of the economy and I will start with some good news for those of you who frequent any of the Coast Casinos (Gold Coast, Suncoast, Sam’s Town, The Orleans, Main Street Station, Fremont and California) where you have always been able to use your single players club card (Players Gold) to redeem rewards at the three downtown locations.

Now, Boyd Gaming, owner of the Coast Casinos, has introduced B Connected, a new players club card that not only replaces your Players Gold card, but can now be used at all of the Boyd Gaming-owned properties throughout the country. Your Players Gold card automatically switches to the new B Connected card, so you don’t have to worry about making any changes yourself.

Other Boyd Gaming properties outside Las Vegas are: Delta Downs Racetrack Casino Hotel in Vinton, La.; Treasure Chest Casino in Kenner, La.; Sam’s Town, Shreveport La.; Sam’s Town Tunica, Miss.; Blue Chip Casino Hotel in Michigan City, Ind.; and Par-A-Dice Hotel Casino in East Peoria, Ill.

NORM: Vegas Reflections
George Knapp recalls Sin City's Mafia days.

As fashion statements go, George Knapp's 1982 Halloween costume was definitely smoking hot.

He has Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal to thank for the inspiration. Their paths had crossed three years earlier.

Knapp, new in town and driving a cab to make ends meet, often stopped in to see his girlfriend, who served cocktails at Fred Glusman's Oz. "The hottest nightclub in town," Knapp recalled.

Glusman, who went on to own the at-times-infamous Piero's Italian Cuisine, "knew all the wiseguys since he had a clothing store in the Stardust," said Knapp, who months earlier had left the Bay Area and his position as a debate coach at UC Berkeley.

Knapp and his girlfriend were ready to move. After meeting some Las Vegas bartenders in East Bay, they decided to flip a coin — heads Hawaii, tails Las Vegas.

They headed for Sin City.

SHOW REVIEW: Keith Barry.
'Hypnomagician' leaves audience asking, 'How'd he do that?'

BY: MIKE WEATHERFORD/LAS VEGAS REVIEW JOURNAL

It's probably a coincidence — isn't it? — that Irish "hypnomagician" Keith Barry turned up in Las Vegas the same week as Criss Angel's grand opening. The two couldn't be more different, except Barry is the one doing the real mind freaks.

The young magician is pretty good with the comic banter, but his real aim is to genuinely mess with you. He serves up the "How'd he do that?" kind of head-scratchers people might be expecting from the guy over at Luxor.

There's a risk Barry's cross-discipline approach will be written off as redundant. His act juggles magic, mentalism and hypnotism, all of which at least one person is doing on the Strip already. And Las Vegas show-goers have never gone overboard for evening shows lacking the flashy sets or the dancing girls.

November 2, 2008 Vegas Values Report

Men for All Seasons.
Tale of legendary vocal group told through their music.
By Paul Szydelkp/Las Vegas Magazine

A story of persistence and friendship, separation and reconciliation, Jersey Boys at The Palazzo is not just a nostalgic succession of chart-topping songs. While The Beatles were launching a movement and other songwriters were protesting the Vietnam War, one character says, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons developed a distinctive sound and memorable lyrics, speaking to couples dealing with the swirling changes of the '60s and the girl "with circles under her eyes behind the counter of the diner."

The little-known, gritty narrative behind the endearing music is told from four distinct viewpoints of the original band members, boys who struggled to stay on the right side of the law, build an identity and gain commercial success from the rough streets of New Jersey.

When songwriter Bob Gaudio joined the group, the Four Seasons soared. Valli's gloriously soulful falsetto captured the feelings of romance and heartbreak. Gaudio's writing talent and business sense propelled the fledgling group with "Sherry," "Big Girls Don't Cry" and "Walk Like a Man." But conflicts erupted between charismatic founder Tommy DeVito and the others, and young Valli has to make a decision to bail DeVito out of rapidly accumulating debt. Distinctively raw language punctuates the spirited biography, and expectations build rapidly for a song everybody seems to remember, "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You."

While the music brings back memories and creates new fans, the story of Jersey Boys is compelling for many reasons for all seasons.

A Little Bit…Everything
Brother-and-sister team take on Vegas.
By Kate Silver/Las Vegas Magazine

That famously wholesome duo is back together and at it again. But this time, that wholesomeness is tempered by a good dose of Las Vegas as Donny and Marie Osmond hit Sin City.

Backed by a nine-piece band and a cast of dancers, Donny & Marie bring back the best they have to offer mixed with the modern marvels of a Vegas production show.

The show is produced by Danny Gans and Chip Lightman, and takes place on a custom-built stage with multiple video screens. As new meets classic, Donny & Marie reminds the world, once again, why this iconic brother-sister team is so beloved.

These Osmonds have been performers for about as long as their voices could change octaves. It all began with The Andy Williams Show. Donny was just 5 years old, and Marie was only 3, when Williams placed her on his lap and introduced her as "the youngest Osmond brother." The audience ate it up.

When the siblings reunited in September at Flamingo to perform some of their greatest hits, such as "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing," "I'm Leaving It All Up to You," "Deep Purple" and more, it was their first extended engagement in nearly 30 years. It's a reminder of just how timeless they really are. Especially when seasoned with a hint of Vegas.

Las Vegas Entertainment News By Chuck Rounds November 2008.

Criss Angel has officially opened his show in conjunction with Cirque du Soleil at the Luxor Hotel.  It is not what you expect of Criss Angel and diehard fans of Mindfreak are going to be disappointed…it is far more Cirque, and far less Angel.  Actually, the very first part is VERY much Criss Angel—which could have been done without Cirque, and then the second part is VERY much Cirque and could have been done without Criss Angel.

Keith Barry, an amazing psychological illusionist, is playing at Planet Hollywood for the month of November.  His show will amaze you…the feats are truly unbelievable.  He is hoping that with this limited run, it will inspire enough interest to have him return for an extended run in the spring of next year.

Scarlett:  Princess of Magic received the Female Magician of the Year award.  She has been performing at the V Theatre since August, and her show continues to improve and get better and better.

On October 21, Treasure Island commemorated the fifth anniversary of its production, the Sirens of TI, by renaming the street leading into the property as "Siren's Cove Blvd."  Formerly "Buccaneer Blvd," the new name celebrates the Las Vegas show that has welcomed more than 10 million viewers in the last five years – a true milestone in a city of constant reinvention.

Beloved singers and songwriters Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith will provide the magical sounds of the holidays while an impressive cast of national, world and Olympic figure skaters skate to the music of the season in the "Holiday Celebration on Ice" at the Orleans Arena on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. Olympic Silver medallist and U.S. National champion Nancy Kerrigan and six-time U.S. champion Todd Eldredge highlight the skating cast.  In addition to the legendary musical talent, champion figure skaters will ring in the holidays with unforgettable routines and breathtaking talent. Kerrigan and Eldredge will be joined by Olympic champion Ilia Kulik, World champion Yuka Sato, six-time Canadian National champion Jennifer Robinson, and World ice dancing champion and nine-time Canadian National champion Shae-Lynn Bourne. Two-time World Silver medallist ice dancing champions Marie-France Dubreuil and Patrice Lauzon, plus three-time World Silver medallist Surya Bonaly and three-time U.S. champion and World Bronze medallist (with partner Kyoko Ina) John Zimmerman, will make for an incredible holiday celebration.

Award-winning comedian Kathy Griffin has been making audiences laugh for years with her quick wit.  In September, her unique brand of comedy led to a second Emmy Award for Griffin's Bravo series "Kathy Griffin: My Life On The D-List."  On Friday, November 14 Griffin returns to Mandalay Bay to discuss Hollywood gossip and celebrity blunders.  Show times are 7 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. inside the Mandalay Bay Theatre.

Don't forget to put Friday November 7th on your calendar for the opening of the 2008 Las Vegas Showgirl Art Competition & Costume Exhibition at the Nevada State Museum. The third annual Cast and Crew Reunion will be included in this event.

Frank Marino has just celebrated his 23rd year starring in "La Cage," making him the longest running headliner in Las Vegas.  He has been in the show since its opening, and he plans to be there as long as they'll let him.  "La Cage" is the third longest running show in Las Vegas, behind Jubilee and Folies Bergere.

Opportunity Village…"The Magical Forest" opens November 22nd. The Enchanted Carousel, the Forest Express Trains, live music, sweet treats, lavishly decorated trees, whimsical displays, millions of lights and visits with Santa Claus provide people of all ages with a winter wonderland each night during the holiday season.  This season hold a truly magical surprise with new exciting attractions and an expanded Magical Forest that Las Vegas has never seen before.  Opportunity Village is a not-for-profit organization that serves people with intellectual disabilities by providing them with vocational training, employment and social recreation services that make their lives more productive and interesting. Once thought by society to be unemployable and unimportant in the community, people with severe disabilities are engaged, active residents who contribute to our society. Through Opportunity Village's programs and services, hundreds of people with disabilities are learning vocational skills and being placed in jobs throughout the community.

The fourth annual Comedy Festival, presented by HBO and AEG Live returns to Caesars Palace from November 20th to 22nd.  Jerry Seinfeld, Dane Cook, and Ellen DeGeneres will head the Comedy Festival.  Individual tickets and packages for this year's festival are currently on-sale.  For the full Festival line-up and schedule log on to www.thecomedyfestival.com.

November is a huge time for entertainment…I mean HUGE!!  This is prime time Vegas entertainment.  This is our busy season…which you'll probably be able to tell from the enormous entertainment schedule.

Superstar Voices in Concert

The popular show 'Last Comic Standing' does not actually have a voice competition with another version of their show, but it would be fun to watch Las Vegas' top impressionists battle it out in a 'voice-off.'  The stakes would be extremely high with $100 million vs. 'zero guarantees, pay to play' Las Vegas showroom contracts at stake.  Either way, recently named "Impressionist of the Year" Larry G Jones who is renowned for his song parodies and the accuracy of his voices will be the 'last impressionist standing,' and in fact the only long running impressionist still performing weekly in Las Vegas from November 22nd  till February 2009.

That's when Danny Gans ends his $150 million dollar contract at the Mirage to take a few months off before moving across the street to the Wynn. Danny will give way to America's Got Talent's Terry Fator who will replace him at The Mirage. Meanwhile, impressionist Gordie Brown will return tot the Golden Nugget for the 3rd time.  All three singing comedy impressionists (+ventriloquist for Terry Fator) will join Larry G Jones' ongoing 'Superstar Voices in Concert' show in Las Vegas when they open again in February 2009.

Performances are 9:00 pm Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday at the The Royal Resort is located at 99 Convention Center Drive, just off the Strip near the Wynn and Riviera Hotels.

Tickets are just $24 for general admission, or $34 for the VIP package which includes premium seating, and an autograhped CD and picture. Seating is limited and reservations are highly recommended by calling (800) 595-4849.

Country Superstars Tribute Now 7 Nights per Week

Country Superstars Tribute" recently celebrated their 300th show, Kicking Off a 7-night-per-week schedule. Since opening at Fitzgerald's Casino & Hotel on June 21, 2007, Las Vegas' only Country Music show has continued to gain ground with both tourists and locals (many Vegas residents claim to have seen the show ten or more times). Featuring a revolving cast of the best Country tribute artists in the business and a live 5-piece band (no tracks or lip-synching here!), the show has featured tributes to Brooks & Dunn, Tim McGraw & Faith Hill, Willie Nelson, Garth Brooks, Shania Twain, Toby Keith, Kenny Chesney – and now, with their schedule expanding to seven nights per week beginning October 1st, CST will be adding additional acts such as Charlie Daniels and Reba McEntire to the lineup.

The show is also planning on expanding into other markets – successful road trips have already been made to Tucson and St. George, Utah.

The producers, singers, musicians and staff thank everyone who has helped make CST a success: the media, the Las Vegas entertainment community, the friends, family, and the country music fans from around the world that have enjoyed this show!

Vegas4Visitors Weekly Awards By Rocl Garman

The Good Luck of the Week Award goes to Criss Angel and Cirque du Soleil. Their combo Cirque meets illusion show called Believe opened last week at Luxor to mixed reviews after a slew of bad press as the show ran through previews. But perhaps they don't need luck – the show has already sold more than $5 million worth of tickets.

The Good Credit of the Week Award goes to anyone who wants to stay at Encore Las Vegas, which is now accepting reservations starting January 12, 2009. You're going to need good credit since the room rates for the first few days are well over $300.

The Good Idea of the Week Award goes to the Tamares Group, operator of several Downtown hotels including the Plaza, which has submitted a proposal to build an art museum in the neighborhood. If approved and actually built (not done deals by any stretch of the imagination), the museum would go into a vacant building at the corner of 6th and Fremont, right across from the El Cortez and would include an arthouse movie theater and maybe a restaurant.

And finally, the Good Thing to Remember Award of the Week goes to the Spring Preserve, which as a part of it's ongoing Untold Stories Lecture Series will be presenting a group of people on November 6, 2008 who were intimately involved with the MGM Grand fire nearly three decades ago. Remembering the tragedy and heroism of the day should remind us all of some important safety lessons. For more info on the lecture call 702-822-7786 or visit the Springs Preserve website.

More Casino Cancellations By Rick Garman

MGM Mirage corporation – the company that manages hotels like Bellagio, MGM Grand, Mirage, and Mandalay Bay to name a few – has announced major cutbacks in their future plans for Vegas and elsewhere, part of an effort to bolster their sagging stock price. Shelved projects include the big resort that had been planned for the corner of Sahara and The Strip that was to be a partnership with Kerzner International, a company that manages resorts in South Africa, and most famously the Atlantis in the Bahamas. The 40 acre development was going to be a multi-billion hotel and casino complex that would've been integrated with a top to bottom overhaul of neighboring Circus Circus.

The proposed MGM Grand resort in Atlantic City has also been cancelled.

But the cuts don't stop with things that don't exist yet. The company also announced that they are massively scaling back plans to remodel and upgrade their Las Vegas properties. They had been planning about a billion dollars in renovations but now are going to spend a fifth of that. So I hope you like the way the casinos and rooms look now because for the most part, they are staying exactly the way they are for the foreseeable future.

Just how far have the stocks sagged? A year ago, MGM Mirage shares were trading for about $90. Last week they dipped as low as $10. The same goes for other publicly traded casino companies including Wynn Resorts which went from over $150 to around $30 and the Las Vegas Sands Corporation (Venetian, Palazzo) which went from over $120 down to as low as $5 per share.

Updated Hotel Review:South Point
By: Rick Garman/vegas4visitors.com

This hotel has a confusing corporate lineage that I won’t bore you with here, but the short version is this: after opening as South Coast the place was bought by Michael Gaughan, part of a famous Las Vegas casino family, and rebranded as South Point. Originally conceived as a sister to locals’ favorites like Orleans, Suncoast, and Gold Coast, the South Point continues to follow the successful locals’ casino formula: lots of low-limit gambling, plenty of low-cost dining and entertainment options, and comfortable and relatively inexpensive accommodations.

When the hotel first opened I complained that it didn’t have much of a personality. It felt bland and a bit impersonal, but it’s amazing what a new owner and a new attitude can do for a place.

South Point is located on Las Vegas Boulevard South, more popularly known as The Strip, but not in the region most tourists consider when thinking of the destination. It’s about six miles south of Mandalay Bay, right along Interstate 15 in a rapidly developing area of condos, apartment buildings, shopping complexes, and houses that was nothing but scrub brush a few years ago.

The overall scheme of the property is Southern California sunshine, all muted earth tones with white and gold accents. To be honest, this helped to contribute the bland complaint I had about the hotel but for compared to many newer Las Vegas hotels, which are the definition of the word bland, I don’t have as much of a problem with it as I used to.

The main floor is given over to the casino of course – an 80,000-square-foot barn of a space that when it opened provided absolutely no intimacy. But a reorganization of the floor along with additions like a high-limit area and a lounge has broken up the sight lines so that I don’t feel exposed like I did before, which is great because you don’t want to feel exposed when you’re feeling guilty about blowing the rent money or little Billy’s college fund.

There are plenty of games on which to do just that – more than 2,200 slot machines with plenty of video poker (all coinless, ticket-in/ticket-out technology), several dozen of the most popular table games, a race and sports book, a keno lounge, a poker room (more of a poker corner), and a giant bingo parlor on the second floor.

Ringing the room are the restaurants, bars, lounges, and a 400-seat showroom. There are no name-brand eateries here (except for Seattle’s Best Coffee I suppose) but they have all the usual suspects covered including a big buffet, a steakhouse, an Italian joint, and a 24-hour café among others. An addition since Gaughan took over added another couple of restaurants and a bar on the second floor.

Also on that second level is the aforementioned bingo parlor plus a 64-lane bowling alley with all of the latest high-tech wizardry the sport seems to demand these days, a video game arcade, and a 16-screen movie theater complex.

Other amenities include a very well-equipped work-out room (all the machines have their own TV screens), a nice spa offering all manner of massages and treatments, and a pool area with multiple places to splash around or lounge. They even have a sundry store that proclaims to have the lowest prices in town on packaged liquor, something worth noting if you are tired of paying twice the going rate for a six-pack at your hotel’s sundry store.

But the centerpiece of the hotel and the thing that makes it different from pretty much everywhere else in town is the giant Equestrian and Events Center, a 4,400 seat arena for horsing around and other entertainment. It features a 250×125 foot show floor arena, 1,200 climate controlled horse stalls, room out back for 2,000 head of cattle, over 100,000-square-feet of meeting and convention space, a bar, and snack facilities.

It has become one of the premiere equestrian facilities in the country and you can regularly see guys with big hats and buckles wandering the halls. During the National Finals Rodeo held in Vegas at the Thomas and Mack arena in December it is pretty much impossible to get near the place much less find a room here.

Of note is the giant statue of legendary casino magnate Benny Binion astride a horse just outside the equestrian center. It was donated by Binion’s daughter but was so big they had to cut holes in the walls to get it inside.

The existing 1350 guest rooms in a multi-winged 25-story tower are lovely, each around 500-square feet and completely packed with all of the conveniences you could possibly need including flat-panel televisions with movies and Internet access, separate high-speed and wireless Internet access, hair dryer, iron and board, coffee maker, and more. The beds are plushy, the furnishings are all simple and tasteful, and the towels in the moderately sized bathroom are soft.

Prices are a bargain, on most days, not only for what you are getting but for the city as a whole. Rates during the week are as low as $70 a night and rarely exceed $100, while weekends are as low as $80 and rarely go over $120. Not the cheapest hotel in town but when you look at what it has to offer in terms of amenities and appointments those are great prices.

Service was extremely friendly everywhere I went, a nice change from when the hotel first opened and things were a bit too cold for my tastes. Looks like Mr. Gaughan focused on this when he took over the property and it shows.

As stated, I found the hotel boring when it first opened as South Coast, devoid of personality. These days South Point may not be the most exciting hotel in town, but it has found its niche and is doing a great job of making a statement beyond just its low cost and high value.

Highs Very nice rooms, a lot to do, bargain rates.
Lows Location.

Bretts Vegas Views By Jackie Brett

LAVO at The Palazzo is offering a pre-theater dinner or a post-theatre nightclub experience. Chef Ludo Lefebvre has created a $30 per person, three-course menu that's served daily from 5 – 8 p.m. and is available to anyone with a show ticket at The Palazzo or The Venetian for that evening.

When the curtain drops, LAVO nightclub offers entertainment as top Strip performers celebrate upstairs after their shows. Each Tuesday, the "Jersey Boys" cast hosts LAVO Tuesdays, an industry night with DJ Five. On Thursdays, comedian Wayne Brady takes his turn at the helm following his show for residence night with DJ Chris Garcia. Cover charge for the nightclub is waived with a ticket stub from any entertainment show from The Palazzo or The Venetian.

Keeping with the entertainment theme, each Thursday, Friday and Saturday the pokers pros from The Venetian's interactive poker-themed stage show "The Real Deal!" host a meet and greet for the show's VIP ticket holders in the lounge at LAVO following the 5:30 p.m. show.

Las Vegas producer Dick Feeney became the 31st recipient of a Las Vegas Walk of Stars honor with his star located in front of New York New York. Visit www.lasvegaswalkofstars.com for more information.

Feeney began his career touring with the Boston-based band the Lewis & Clark Expedition and then formed his own group Gemini. In 1981, he produced his first show "Lullaby of Swing" in Honolulu.

In 1985, Feeney came to Las Vegas as associate producer of "An Evening at La Cage" at the Riviera and went on to produce "Crazy Girls" in 1987. In 1991 at the Sands, Feeney opened "Viva Las Vegas," which now plays at the Plaza downtown and remains the longest running and most successful afternoon show in Las Vegas history.

In 1992, Feeney organized the skydivers appearing in the hit movie "Honeymoon in Vegas" to form the now famous "Flying Elvi" skydiving team. Based in Las Vegas, the Flying Elvi is the only such team officially licensed by the Elvis Presley estate. In doing so, he actually invented the word 'Elvi,' which has now become the accepted plural of Elvis.

Feeney went on to produce the classic-Vegas dinner show "The Rat Pack is Back," the tribute to Frank, Sammy, Joey & Dean, that currently plays at the Plaza.

In the Sahara's Casbar Lounge, the country rock band Wolfcreek is holding free concerts at 9 p.m. nightly. Another lounge activity will the Bikini Bull Riding Contests with six ladies from Ba-Da-Bing Gentlemen's Club competing for cash prizes when they ride a mechanical bull on Nov. 7 at 10 p.m. Each entertainer will also pick out a cowboy in the crowd to compete with them in a "Frozen T-shirt Contest." The first three cowboys to complete the frozen T-shirt contest will escort the Ba-Da-Bing girls back to their club via Hummer stretch limo. In addition, two PBR riders will be making surprise guest appearances.

New York Strip or the 2.5 lb Main Lobster with a variety of sides to choose from for up to 25% off the 2008 cost – for example the New York Strip in 2008 is $44, but the New York Strip in 1999 was $33.  In appreciation for the support throughout the years from Las Vegas locals and guests alike, AJ’s will bring back the trademark grand piano every Friday and Saturday night from 9pm to close with local pianist, Peter Radd to play signature tunes from the 1960s.

AJ’s Steakhouse, a swanky but sentimental tribute to the classic Vegas steakhouses of the 1960s is closing its doors after 10 years.  AJ’s has offered an innovative menu throughout the years with dishes to please appetites of any kind.  Fine cuisine crafted in the gleaming open kitchen has produced savory items such as the Ahi Tuna Trio complimented with Serrano chilies and seared foie gras and the Guiness Braised Beef Short Ribs served with garlic potato puree, pearl onions and sage.  A signature trademark of AJ’s is that the beef cuts have always been aged-to-perfection and seared at high temperatures for tender masterpieces that have given the phrase “cuts like butter” a whole new meaning.

Monti-Licious by Monte Rock from The Vegas Eye

Saturday night, Oct. 25th , at Taj Majal in Atlantic City, your columnist, Monti Rock III, performed to a sold out crowd as part of the featured show -Disco Ball.  I revisited Disco Tex and his Sex-O-Lettes.  Vito Bruno, the  producer, put together ten dancers, a big band, and young Sex-O-Lettes  behind me and it was a triumph.  Thanks to the Trump organization all of the performers enjoyed first class accommodations and top of the line amenities.  It's good to be Disco Tex again.  With the see-out of the show,(about 5000 people), I guess I shouldn't be too surprised to find casinos in Atlantic City filled with alot of action. It was perfect for promoting my cd's and t-shirts and made me quite aware of star power. But, what do I know, I'm just a journalist.

While in New York City Criss Angel's show Believe at the Luxor celebrated the grand opening with a gala party.  So far, the reviews have been mixed..  I'll do my own review sometime in November and still hold to the idea that everyone deserves a chance to prove themselves and right now Criss deserves a shot.  One wrong click on the email send key set off a misunderstanding about  my invitation to the opening, but all is well again. I guess the best way to generate publicity for me is to be out of town at the right,(or wrong) time.

Last week I wrote about all the Cirque shows in town and how I thought it might be time for someone to come up with something new.  In my enthusiasm to make a point I goofed.  LeReve at Wynn is not part of the Cirque scene.  The powers that be must not think Cirque has reached its max here in Las Vegas because at this very moment a show about Elvis, a Cirque show, is being written.

The economy continues to struggle and that holds true for Las Vegas,  The casino and hotel earnings are way down, some by more than 50%.  There are at least two major properties for sale and many of the properties are making big cuts.  It seems as one restaurant closes, two more open and even though our Mayor Goodman keeps trying to generate business for downtown, it could take another five or six years to see any real development.

Downtown holds a couple of exceptions.  The Golden Nugget continues to be a mainstay for downtown and everyone is waiting for the arrival of Gordie Brown in February.  And we can't count out the Plaza which continues with Viva Las Vegas and The Rat Pack is Back.

Back on the Strip Donny and Marie Osmond are doing a brisk business at the Flamingo while Bette Midler continues to draw the crowds to Caesars Colosseum.  And as mentioned in an earlier column the word is that international sensation and adopted resident Celine Dion is waiting in the wings at the Colosseum.  Celine's earlier show was sold out, sold out, sold out for five years.  Her return would break records again, no doubt. but first she's trying to have another child..  Our beloved Cher is coming back to Caesars in Feb and will do her thing through May.  Stay healthy Cher-we all love you!

Breaking News: Planet Hollywood to host 2009 and 2010 Miss USA Pageants. By Robin Leach/Vegas Luxe Life

Moments ago a new, two-year deal between Donald Trump’s Miss Universe Organization and Robert Earl’s Planet Hollywood was signed to bring the beauty pageant to the Strip for two new consecutive years. Miss USA 2009 and Miss USA 2010 will be broadcast live from Planet Hollywood on NBC.

Paula M. Shugart, president of the Miss Universe Organization, announced that the 2009 competition will air live on April 19 from the Theatre for the Performing Arts. Paula, who used to work with me on our old Star Search show, said: “Returning to Vegas was not a difficult decision to make. The great success of working together in 2008 with the collaboration of the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, combined with the support of the Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority, was so incredible we decided to come back for the next two years.

“Last year’s contestants had a great time in the desert seeing many of the attractions Las Vegas offers. We can’t wait to show this year’s delegates and our viewers more of this exciting city!”

“Signature special events are home to Las Vegas,” said Rossi Ralenkotter, president and CEO of the Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority. “This event is truly a great partnership, leveraging the strength of each brand. Las Vegas is excited to once again host the Miss USA pageant.”

Robert Earl, co-chairman of Planet Hollywood, added: “We are delighted to welcome back the Miss Universe Organization. It is especially gratifying to know that we have the pleasure of hosting the Miss USA Pageant for the next two years. As an annual event, the Miss USA Pageant turns the national spotlight on Las Vegas and all it has to offer and is a huge win for the entire Las Vegas community. The partnership with the Miss Universe Organization, the Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority and Planet Hollywood has proven to be very successful.”

Miss USA 2008 Crystle Stewart, who was crowned at Planet Hollywood this past April, has been traveling the nation as an advocate for breast and ovarian cancer awareness, education, research and legislation. She will crown her successor at the
conclusion of the two-hour primetime telecast, before a worldwide TV audience including 7 million here in the United States.

Contestants from all 50 states and the District of Columbia will be judged in three categories: swimsuit, evening gown and interview. The show will conclude with one contestant being crowned Miss USA 2009.

Planet Hollywood is also the Vegas home for at least the next two years for the rival Miss America pageant. The competitors for that event move into the resort in January for the end-of-the-month live broadcast on TLC. The state winner contestants are currently filming a 10-part reality TV series that will broadcast for 10 weeks leading up to the finals. Last January, Kirsten Haglund was crowned Miss America, the youngest contestant at just 19 to have ever won the prestigious title.

The $2,000 truffle pasta and the $1,000 truffle soup. By Robin Leach.

Don’t panic! The prices aren’t quite that stratospheric yet — but inching ever closer! Two or three pricy platters topped with heapings of the rare and prized Italian white truffle, only found in Alba, will send the credit card into sky-high overdrive. You’ll find the precious delicacies starting next Tuesday at our five-star restaurants on the Strip. Check out Luciano Pellegrini’s Valentino at The Venetian and Wolfgang Puck’s Spago at Caesars Palace, where I’m going to splurge on my all-time-favorite truffle ice cream. At Restaurant Guy Savoy, also in Caesars Palace, the chef-owner himself flies in from Paris to oversee the highly anticipated return of the white truffle. Guy has created an amazing, three-course truffle meal of scallop carpaccio, pumpkin soup and poached egg and risotto — all with as many shavings of le truffe as you can afford! He’s also added a four-course Wild Game dinner with Foie Gras and wild squab, roasted grouse or mallard duck! Don’t even ask the price:

Just close your eyes and say,“Charge it.” As they say en France: a mere bagatelle!

Tweaks to Believe are ‘totally normal and standard operating procedure’
By Robin Leach/Vegas Luxe Life

Let’s end the rumors before they race out of control and do any damage that’s not intended.

No sooner had theater critics pounced on some aspects of the Cirque du Soleil show Believe, starring Criss Angel, than the rumors started, built up momentum and, before you knew it, everybody was predicting mass executions, death by firing squads and a whole series of Halloween horrors.

It was quite laughable, because they were fueled by people who don’t have the slightest understanding of the entire creative process of such a massive production and undertaking. To marry every element from music to magic, from costumes to choreography, from wardrobe to wizardry, from aerialists to acrobats, from dancers to designers, is a two-year, nonstop process. Take a look at the Cirque/Beatles production of Love DVD to understand all the behind-the-scenes, technical processes.

Marie Osmond feels at home in community — ‘We really love Vegas’
By Robin Leach/Vegas Luxe Life

“I finally feel I’m home,” said Marie Osmond when she talked to me for the first time about her new extended contract to headline at the Flamingo. She confirmed Luxe Life’s recent exclusive that big brother Donny let slip that they will probably be here for at least four years with the option renewals.

“Now I’m really a Vegan,” she continued. “We really love Vegas. We live here in a lovely home in Henderson. The kids go to school here, and the entire family is happy to have made the move. We’re in the community, and we’re here to support and take part in it.“

Marie explained that as part of the extended Flamingo contract, she will now be able to produce her new daytime talk show from the Strip next year. Pre-production will get under way in June, with the first tapings scheduled for August and a September start date. “It was part of the renegotiation, and we think Vegas audiences will be great for the TV show,” Marie said. “There are lots of things for us to do in Vegas with the show.

“Vegas is just as exciting — even theaterwise — without New York’s high prices or New York’s traffic. We’re in the desert, and we’ve got lots of room instead of being on top of each other.”

The Donny & Marie show has been a nightly phenomenon since its September start. Marie told me: “We’re packed every night — it’s even unbelievable to us. Every night after each show, we’ll meet and greet the audience, sign autographs and pose for photos for 30 to 45 minutes. We find some of the fans have traveled from as far away as Australia and England just to come see us. That’s amazing to us!”

Marie turned up with her daughter and other family members to watch the new Criss Angel Believe magic show at the Luxor, where she quipped: “If only I could get him to make my alimony payments disappear!”

Stomp stepping out in favor of new Peep Show By Robin Leach

Rumors that the Stomp Out Loud show at Planet Hollywood will close and relocate as of Jan. 4 have been confirmed as true. The dance cast revealed the producers’ decision and hope to move to another Vegas location.

In the meantime, Vegas DeLuxe also can now officially confirm that The Peep Show, a new adult topless cabaret will take its place in early March. The showroom will be shuttered in the interim for a multi-million-dollar makeover to turn it into an intimate, luxury VIP tables and banquettes section close and up front to the eye-popping stage!

The elaborate and expensive topless show will feature 16 dancers — that’s more than twice the number of most Vegas girlie shows. It also will have a live, five-piece band with two singers. Still cloaked in secrecy, though, is the identity of the two TV stars who will headline the striptease action.

I’m reliably told in a keep-it-under-your-hat whisper that on Nov. 18, we will be invited to meet the home-screen hotties and learn more about the show. For now, though, you’ve got the advance word, and on Nov. 17 you know Vegas DeLuxe will have all the advance info!
