'Criss Angel Believe' opening
Director defends magician's change.
By MIKE WEATHERFORD/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

The director of "Criss Angel Believe" has an honest if unconventional way of talking up a $100 million attraction.

To those who expect the Goth-rock magician's fast-cut TV daredevilry, Serge Denoncourt would say this:

"Don't come. It's not a good idea."

Cirque du Soleil has been on defense with the show, which celebrates its "black carpet" celebrity opening at Luxor today. Five weeks of ticketed previews have generated some hostile audience reaction and spread opinion that "Believe" is a big bore and/or short on magic.

Denoncourt and his collaborators have been tweaking and tightening, but they admit the larger battle is one of perception. The show's title is now a trust issue the creators surely never intended: Will Angel fans buy into an operatic production that isn't the rock 'n' roll magic show they believe they're coming to see?

Stars to line up for first glimpse of ‘Believe’
By: Melissa Arseniuk/Las Vegas Sun

A star-studded guest list of VIPs was released Wednesday detailing the colorful and high-profile personalities expected to attend the premiere of “Criss Angel Believe” on Friday.

The sixth Vegas Cirque du Soleil show will be unveiled Halloween night during an extravagant and appropriately spooky gala event.

Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberté will be in town to mark the occasion with Angel and the show’s co-writer and director, Serge Denoncourt.

Among their guests will be Evangeline Lilly and Dominic Monaghan from ABC’s “Lost,” Holly Madison and Bridget Marquardt, stars of E!’s “The Girls Next Door,” Christina Hendricks from AMC’s “Mad Men,” and Neil Patrick Harris from CBS’s “How I Met Your Mother” (and of “Doogie Howser, M.D.” fame).

Illusionist’s big ‘Ta-da!’
Speculation surrounds bad boy conjurer Criss Angel’s long-awaited show with Cirque. BY: Joe Brown/Las Vegas Sun

Just days from now, our long national nightmare will finally be over.

We’ll finally know the answer to the question that’s been burning in our hearts, minds and Twitter accounts:

Will “Criss Angel: Believe” live up to the hype and hate and save Las Vegas?

(What did you think we were talking about?)

‘Believe’ two days from public debut.
After weeks of performances, Cirque show’s progress evident.
By: Melissa\Arseniuk/Las Vegas Sun

Practice has made nearly perfect for magician Criss Angel.

After weeks of special “preview” performances, his $100-million Cirque du Soleil show, “Criss Angel Believe,” is in its final stages, almost ready to be unveiled to the public.

Tuesday night was the 35th and final preview performance before Thursday’s media-only show. On Friday, the show opens to the public during an extravagant Halloween night premiere.

“There’s nothing safe about this show,” Angel said. “Here you have lighting, you have costumes, you have special effects, you have the illusion, you have the artist, the character development. All of those things have to work harmoniously together in order to have the effect pulled off.”

Illusion is elusive in Angel’s ‘Believe’
By: Joe Brown/Las Vegas Sun

No wonder.

That — among its many, more obvious failings — is the fatal flaw at the heart of “Criss Angel: Believe.”

There’s just no wonder in it.

In fact, there’s shockingly little magic to be seen in this much-anticipated Cirque du Soleil spectacle constructed around a celebrity magician. No shock, no awe, precious little surprise, even.

Cirque throws everything in its considerable arsenal of stage genius at Angel — the expected array of lush, loud music, expert dancers and aerialists, lavish settings and boundary-breaking special effects, all intended to amaze.

The single most amazing thing about “Believe” is that it’s still so boring.

Angel, Cirque say ‘Believe’ presented unique challenges.
By: Melissa Arseniuk/Las Vegas Sun

Criss Angel says he’s living the dream.

His $100 million Cirque du Soleil show, “Criss Angel Believe,” premiered Friday night and as he walked into his Luxor theater, Playboy bunny Holly Madison was on his arm.

“Fifteen years ago I dreamt it and today I’m living the dream,” the magician said during a news conference Friday afternoon. “It just goes to show you that anybody can live their dream if you believe. And it’s not a line, it’s what I believe.

“This is beyond my dreams,” he said.

After ‘Believe’ premiere comes the after-party.
Luxor keeps details under wraps, but “black carpet” guests could have a late night.
By: Melissa Arseniuk/Las Vegas Sun

After five weeks of practice, practice, practice, it’s time to party, party, party.

“Criss Angel Believe” opened for preview performances on Sept. 26, and tonight, after three delays and a flurry of rumors that the show wouldn’t open at all, Cirque du Soleil’s sixth permanent Las Vegas-based show will make its public debut.

Angel and his cast will give two performances tonight, at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., before joining an exclusive poolside party that the Luxor and Cirque du Soleil are throwing for them.

Adam Fine "Casino Player" Publisher Passes Away

Just read in the current issue of Casino Player Magazine that it's Publisher, Adam Fine passed away in August at only 39 years old.

Adam gave me my first big opportunity in writing a column when I wrote for Casino Player for a year in 2000.

Even though my column was withdrawn from the magazine, Adam always kept track of my website and was amazed on how many members I had.

Every year he would donate subscriptions to his magazines as prizes in our football contest which he did once again this year.

Thanks for everything, Adam.

Steve's Las Vegas Quickies:

Treasure Island commemorated the fifth anniversary of its sexy outdoor production, "Sirens of TI," by renaming "Buccaneer Blvd" leading into the property as "Sirens Cove Blvd." The new name celebrates the iconic show that has welcomed more than 10 million viewers in the last five years.

Show times are nightly at 7, 8:30, 10 and 11:30 p.m.

This week, the Hard Rock celebrated an expansion milestone by holding a topping off ceremony for its new North Tower, which is part of the resort's $850 million expansion project. The new 17-story hotel tower is slated for completion in September 2009 and will feature 479 guest rooms, meeting space, 10 luxurious "pool suites" and a decadent 3,400-square-foot penthouse.

The Plaza downtown offers classic Vegas-style dinner shows with "The Rat Pack is Back!" impersonator production featuring a faux Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Dean Martin and comedian Joey Bishop recreating a nostalgic return to the Sand's Copa Room complete with the live big band, the Lon Bronson Orchestra.

"Hypnosis Unleashed"  hit a milestone on Oct. 23 when it celebrated its 2,000th show in Las Vegas at the Harmon Theater. The Bad Boys of Hypnosis, Michael Johns and Terry Stokes, will perform a dualing hypnotist show that night. Johns and Stokes have been working together at numerous Las Vegas properties since 2001.

Former Harrah's Strip headliner Clint Holmes will be making his Carnegie Hall debut with the New York Pops Orchestra on Nov. 7 in a concert series entitled, "New York Songs: A Love Letter To The City." Meanwhile, his shows at the Suncoast from Oct. 24-26 at 7:30 p.m. will feature selections from his Carnegie Hall concert, some of his favorite Broadway songs, and his musical director Bill Fayne, who is one of the Las Vegas Tenors. Tickets are priced from $29.95, call 702-636-7075.

"Sin City Kitties," a new topless revue, produced by Glenn Medas and directed by Michael Chambers (they also produce "Sin City Heat" in the Shimmer Lounge at the Hilton Hotel), will make its media debut next Friday in Whiskey Pete's 300-seat showroom at Primm, Nevada.

Country singer, Travis Tritt, has been inked to perform in the Tiffany Theater at the Tropicana Hotel, Dec, 5-6 with tickets priced as low as $60.

Resort developer Steve Wynn has sold the Johannes Vermeer painting he purchased four years ago for $30 million, sources have confirmed.

The identity of the buyer is not known.

Gay rights groups are asking Jerry Lewis to apologize for the second time in a year for an anti-gay slur. Asked for his opinion last week on the sport of cricket, Lewis told an Australian television station it was "a fag game." He added a visual: he pretended that he was holding an imaginary bat and made an effeminate gesture, according to The Associated Press. Lewis, 82, apologized for using the same word during his annual telethon a year ago.

Cirque du Soleil spokeswoman Anita Nelving has confirmed Criss Angel's claim here last week that the Luxor's new show, "Believe," is the No. 1 best-selling Cirque show. Angel's comment caused an uproar among doubters after a storm of negative reports and responses. Nelving told me Saturday that the four weeks of previews were sold out and grossed $5 million. She told local freelance writer and podcaster Steve Friess of VegasHappensHere.com that "In terms of daily sales, currently 'Believe' is averaging higher or equal to our other top-selling productions in Las Vegas." The magic production launches Friday.

Caesars Palace headliner Cher is a guest on the "Ellen DeGeneres Show" on Nov. 3 (3 p.m., Channel 8, KLAS-TV). Maybe Ellen can squeeze more information out of Cher on her health issues that caused her to cancel six shows this fall and another four earlier this year.

What happened to Paul Rodriguez? He was to host "The Real Deal!," the new poker-themed stage show at The Venetian. Vinnie Favorito has the role.

One week from today, either Barack Obama or John McCain will head to his rightful place at Madame Tussauds wax museum in The Venetian. The candidates' "clay heads" are sitting in London, waiting to be fleshed out after voters do their thing.

The winning clay head will be installed at Tussauds in Vegas, New York, London and Washington, D.C. Actually, a wax Obama already is posing at the Tussauds in D.C. He was shaped and put there last year once he became a presidential candidate.

It’s official this morning that America’s favorite brother-sister duo, Donny & Marie, will extend their contract as the resort’s headliners for two years, through October 2010.

Cher's first series of 2009 shows at Caesars Palace was announced Thursday. Tickets for the 35 performances, starting Feb. 21 and ending May 24, go on sale Nov. 3, the day of her appearance on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show."

Oktoberfest at the Hofbrauhaus Las Vegas started with Siegfried & Roy dancing to an oompa band and ends Sunday with chicken dances, "Roll Out the Barrel" and bratwurst. The Beatles tribute band the Fab Four has keg-tapping honors tonight and they're performing. Prost!

Morton's Steak & Seafood for Two for $99 at Morton's the Steakhouse, 400 E. Flamingo Road, has been extended through Nov. 28.

From 5 to 8 p.m. every Tuesday through Saturday, the Sahara is running a free $500 slot tournament. All new and existing Club Sahara members receive a free entry.

The company that operates three hotels in Primm has stopped taking midweek reservations at Buffalo Bill’s in an apparent effort to reduce room capacity and associated expenses.

Representatives of Las Vegas-based Herbst Gaming could not be reached to explain the closure of their Terrible’s-branded hotel Monday through Thursday evenings.

Via Brasil Steakhouse, an authentic Brazilian “Churrascaria,” offers 2-for-1 on all of their drinks during Happy Hour for the entire month of November.

Via Brasil Steakhouse will be offering 2-for-1 on all of their cocktails at the bar during Happy Hour for the entire month of November. Drinks include everything Via Brasil Steakhouse has to offer, from their signature Brazilian “Caipirinhia,” to beer and other cocktails.

Las Vegas' Riviera Hotel Casino is e-mailing customers to notify them of a new, uniform room rate, effective through Dec. 30, 2009 (but only if booked before Jan. 1). Sun.-Thurs, nights are $39, weekend ones are $59. These prices are not, however, reflected on the Riviera's online-reservation page, which shows triple-digit rates during Jan.-March of next year.

The Los Angeles Times' Movable Buffet column has weighed in on the Criss Angel/Cirque du Soleil Believe. Too much Cirque, not enough Angel is the verdict of the review, which deems it "a muddy mix" of the two: "there is virtually nothing … that is not better presented in another Cirque show or another magic show in Vegas." The show's illusions are described as being less like "Mindfreak" than Lance Burton. "The early moments … in which Angel is just being himself are actually the highlight of the show," concludes reviewer Richard Abowitz, who predicts major changes.

Sir Elton John resumed a new run of shows at the Caesars Palace Colosseum last night – and he’ll be there on Halloween Eve with his Red Piano show continuing through Nov. 9.

NORM: No fuss, no muss, no Monti Rock.

Criss Angel is holding a rare media event today, hours before the opening night of his magic show collaboration with Cirque du Soleil, and there's at least one question he doesn't have to worry about.

That would be: Why was disco-era gay icon Monti Rock III dis-invited from the opening of "Believe"?

The charge surfaced Wednesday in a blog by an overwrought local food and beverage publisher, who wrote: "Why in Gods name would anyone want to put a 70 year old man through this?"

According to Michael Politz, publisher of the Las Vegas Food and Beverage magazine, Rock — longtime entertainment columnist for Gaming Today — was dis-invited to the opening and the gala because they had "over invited people."

NORM: Vegas Reflections.
George Knapp recalls Sin City's Mafia days.
SOURCE: The Las Vegas Review Journal

As fashion statements go, George Knapp's 1982 Halloween costume was definitely smoking hot.

He has Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal to thank for the inspiration. Their paths had crossed three years earlier.

Knapp, new in town and driving a cab to make ends meet, often stopped in to see his girlfriend, who served cocktails at Fred Glusman's Oz. "The hottest nightclub in town," Knapp recalled.

Glusman, who went on to own the at-times-infamous Piero's Italian Cuisine, "knew all the wiseguys since he had a clothing store in the Stardust," said Knapp, who months earlier had left the Bay Area and his position as a debate coach at UC Berkeley.

Knapp and his girlfriend were ready to move. After meeting some Las Vegas bartenders in East Bay, they decided to flip a coin — heads Hawaii, tails Las Vegas.

They headed for Sin City.

SHOW REVIEW: 'The Real Deal'
Getting in on the Action: 'Real Deal' pits audience members against pros in game of poker.

By MIKE WEATHERFORD/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

It's easy to tell whether "The Real Deal" is your kind of show — if "show" is even the right word.

You would have joined in the group chorus of "No!" when host Vinnie Favorito asked, "Gavin (Smith) doesn't have a WSOP bracelet?"

You would have known what Phil Hellmuth did on ESPN. As in, Favorito: "You got a few boos" after your introduction. Hellmuth: "After what I did on the ESPN last night, if they boo me I don't blame 'em."

You could join in the argument between Hellmuth and Smith about why the Q-7 is called "the computer hand" in Texas Hold 'em.

Wow. To think that early this year, I wondered if a musical for Red Hat ladies was casting its audience net too narrowly.

But "Hats!" was a conventional stage offering. "The Real Deal" is a game show that aims to pull you right through the TV screen to sit at the table with celebrity pros. Think "Pleasantville" or "The Purple Rose of Cairo" for the La-Z-Boy World Series of Poker player.

The New Rooms : The M Suites at Harrah's Las Vegas.
From: www.vegastripping.com

In addition to the newly refurbished standard rooms at Harrah's Las Vegas, Harrah's Entertainment has recently upped the ante at their flagship Las Vegas property with a brand new offering - the M Suites. Taking cue from the wildly successful - and adventurous - Flamingo GO Rooms, the new M Suites (dial M for modern) give Harrah's notoriously stodgy rooms a thorough kick in the slacks, perfect for the suite seeking set.

Bedecked with a crazy quilt of contrasting textures and colors - deep maroons and browns, candy coated plastiques, two tone floral nebulae prints, topped off with curvy edges and brushed nickel fixtures - Harrah's new M Suites land somewhere between the J-Pop sci-fi of the Go Rooms and the sheer outlandish decor of the new rooms at the Mirage.

The M Suites were designed by Kurstin Schmidt at Urbane Design Associates whose resume includes suites & room designs for Caesars Palace, Ballys, Monte Carlo, Silver Legacy (Reno), Harrah's Reno and Harrah's Lake Tahoe among others. Perhaps the best known design from Urbane Design is the new(ish) poker room at Caesars Palace.

MGM MIRAGE RESTAURANTS AWARDED 2009 MICHELIN STARS HIGHLIGHTED BY THREE-STAR HONORS FOR JOËL ROBUCHON AT MGM GRAND.

Michelin Guide’s Las Vegas edition is a European nod to Las Vegas’ evolution into one of the world’s top dining destinations.  Seven of the seventeen restaurants honored with at least one Michelin star are within MGM MIRAGE properties.  Receiving top honors is the Michelin three-star restaurant, Joël Robuchon at MGM Grand, the only Las Vegas recipient of this well-respected distinction.

Earning an impressive two stars is Chef Julian Serrano’s Picasso at Bellagio.  Two stars is defined by Michelin as “excellent cooking, worth a detour” and is bestowed upon restaurants exhibiting “skillfully and carefully crafted dishes of outstanding quality.”  Chef Serrano’s signature creations, including Lamb with truffle crust and Medallions of Fallow Deer, are outstanding dishes that have contributed to this latest accolade.

Rounding out the honors and capturing one star are five impressive restaurants – L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon at MGM Grand, Le Cirque at Bellagio, MICHAEL MINA Bellagio, Aureole at Mandalay Bay and miX atop THEhotel at Mandalay Bay.

“We are so proud to have been recognized by Michelin for having many of the world's top chefs and restaurants within our resorts,” said Jim Murren, president and COO of MGM MIRAGE.   “The Las Vegas Michelin Guide accolades have been made possible by the enormous creativity of our culinary talent."

Joël Robuchon at MGM Grand was the “Chef of the Century’s” first fine dining restaurant in the United States and represents exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey” according to Michelin’s three-star criteria.  A three-star Michelin restaurant also is defined by the following.  “One always eats extremely well here, often superbly.  Distinctive dishes are precisely executed, using superlative ingredients.”

Chef Robuchon said, “I couldn’t be more proud of this restaurant and these talented chefs.  I am honored to receive this award for a second consecutive year and to have the only three-star restaurant in Las Vegas.”

The restaurant joins the ranks of only 69 other restaurants worldwide, including Jean-George and Le Bernardin in New York, to hold Michelin’s highest star rating.

Gamal Aziz, president and COO of MGM Grand, said, “Chef Joël Robuchon is one of those rare individuals with such drive, passion and pursuit of perfection, he was destined to achieve accolades such as the Michelin three stars.  MGM Grand’s culinary scene has been raised to new heights with the addition of Joël Robuchon.”

Chef Robuchon has a longstanding relationship with the Michelin Guide.  He was the youngest chef of record to receive three stars for his restaurant Jamin in Paris in 1984 and is currently the most starred chef in the world.

Robuchon and his team, including Executive Chef Claude Le Tohic, Pastry Chef Kamel Guechida and General Manager Loic Launay, have crafted an experience that has drawn raves from diners and media alike.  This esteemed honor joins numerous other awards including Esquire’s Best New Restaurant 2006, Bon Appetit Chef of the Year in 2006 for Robuchon and Pastry Chef of the Year for Guechida in 2007, Condé Nast Traveler “Hot Tables of 2006,” as well as a James Beard Foundation nomination for Best New Restaurant in 2006.

The Edge of Magic
Imagination tweaks perceptions of reality.
By: Melissa Arsenniuk/Las Vegas Magazine

Las Vegas has more magicians per capita than any other American city and this month the city gains another resident illusionist when the hybrid theater/magic show, Criss Angel Believe, opens at the Luxor.

Criss Angel has lived in Vegas for five years now, but the Mindfreak star hasn't taken a permanent headlining gig since he left New York in 2003.

Believe changes everything for Angel – and the magician couldn't be happier. He repeatedly refers to the production, created with Cirque du Soleil, as the "fruition" of 15 years of dreaming and hard work, and his enthusiasm is growing as the gala premiere approaches.

Following four weeks of sold-out preview performances, the $100 million spectacular opens publicly on Oct. 31.

"I'm very, very excited," Angel said, smiling proudly as he hints that he hopes his allegorical show will revolutionize magic. "I wanted the illusions to support the journey."

When he talks about the show, Angel's edgy rock star image softens and his mood resembles that of a proud father, eager to watch his son take his first steps. Beneath the ragged jeans, sparkling bling and styled alt-rock hairdo, he is as nervous as he is ecstatic.

While the magician should be under considerable stress, he hides it well. The months of long rehearsals and sleep-deprived nights aren't obvious when he speaks or when he performs onstage. Angel talks easily and freely, cracking jokes as he discusses the ups and downs of the creative process.

Still, he acknowledges the pressure. "Each person that's in the audience is paying their money – their hard-earned money in this very difficult economy – and I want to make sure I give them an experience they'll never forget," he said.

Believe is the sixth permanent Vegas-based Cirque show, yet Angel's collaboration with the Cirque co-writer and director, Serge Denoncourt, has resulted in a notably unusual production.

Billed as "haunting exploration deep inside (Angel's) inventive mind," the 90-minute journey features more than 25 of Angel's "mindfreaks," including his signature levitations.

Cirque's iconic attributes – imaginative costuming, innovative choreography, dramatic music, colorful characters and world-class performers – enhance Angel's act and bring an additional element of magic and whimsy.

Award-winning designer Mérédith Caron created Believe's exquisite and eccentric costumes, while 26-year-old Australian prodigy Wade Robson, of Fox's So You Think You Can Dance fame, completed the choreography.

The various components ignite onstage to provide a unique Cirque experience. Believe is part Mindfreak, part Cirque du Soleil, and Vegas-style spectacle through and through.

One Wicked Good Time
Fiesta fraternization hits the Strip.
By: Kiko Miyasato/Las Vegas Magazine

He was thirsty … still thirsty. Mr. D. Ablo had been scouring the Las Vegas Strip day and night and still could not quench his thirst. He had been to just about every watering hole in the city – coming up as dry as the desert in which he searched. He needed a namesake, a place where his devilish deeds didn't have a limit – where a Spring Break vibe could happen every day of the year. Finally, D. Ablo decided to erect his own place of worship, a place where the city of sin could raise its flag – a place after the devil's own heart.

Please Welcome Las Vegas' most sinful contender, Diablo's Cantina. Connected to the Monte Carlo and managed by The Light Group, the 10,000-square-foot Diablo's is located right in the thick of the action as the establishment stakes its claim on the Boulevard. Diablo's gates allow easy access directly off the Strip. The two-story den of iniquity entices passersby as they catch their first glimpse through the near floor-to-ceiling windows as pumping music flows out the door.

Soft lighting combined with strings of holiday lights and candles cast a gentle glow onto the rustic and vibrant décor, creating the perfect ambience for naughtiness. An ample bar beckons patrons to sidle up. For a bite to eat, take a few steps up where you can find groups of tables and cozy booths. The dining menu is both inventive and extensive, featuring Mexican, Southwestern and American cuisine.

But what the sinners of Diablo's really want to give up their souls for are the drinks. The tequila list features more than 80 choices of the libation – everything from your typical tequila to the rare and exotic. In addition to the staple margaritas, sangrias and beer, specialty drinks like the Sinful Vixen, Karma, The Chupacabra and The Frida Kahlo can be ordered by the pitcher. Drinks by the pitcher? Now we're talkin'!

Tucked in a corner is a set of stairs leading to the second floor, where the first thing you'll feel is the gentle breeze. The open-air design creates a coastal feel and allows unobstructed views of the Strip. Feeding the frenzy is another bounteous bar, where the "wheel of sin," once spun, determines drink specials. There's plenty of seating for the weary, but why would the weary come? Here is where the real licentiousness begins, as a stage hosts live bands and DJs, who draw patrons to the dance floor. Helping to raise your spirits and blood alcohol levels are the roaming tequila vixens – let's just say, muy caliente!

This multilevel playground named Diablo's is a friend to all: No cover, long lines – or elitist attitude. This place was built on fun; the upscale cantina is an unpretentious place to revel. And on Oct. 31, Diablo's hosts Dusk Til Dawn Halloween, an all-night bash with cash giveaways, live performances and a sexiest costume contest.

Is the Downturn Pushing Down New Year’s?
By: Rick Garman

It’s no secret that the battered US economy is battering the tourism industry in Las Vegas, with major declines in everything from room rates to visitor volume. So I was wondering if this was affecting room rates for New Year’s Eve, traditionally the busiest and most expensive time of the year. The answer seems to be yes.

New Year’s Eve is on a Wednesday this year, so that may factor into this a little (no 3 or 4 day weekend for most people), but even taking that into account, rates are generally lower and restrictions much less stringent. A few examples:
Bellagio is charging $600 per night for December 30 and 31, but unlike most years past where they have had a two or three night minimum at those or higher rates, there are no check-in restrictions this year.
Treasure Island also has no minimum and the 31st is at $400.
Bally’s has a 2-night minimum but it will only cost you around $400 for both nights. Not exactly what you’d call “cheap” but definitely cheaper than normal.

I didn’t look at every hotel but I only found one that was charging what I considered to be a typically outrageous New Year’s Eve price and that was The Mirage. Their website listed December 31st at – you may want to sit down for this - $1,000!

Show Review:Donny and Marie By Rick Garman

You'd have to be a total curmudgeon to not be charmed by Donny and Marie Osmond's show at The Flamingo. I am a total curmudgeon and they even got me. I think it was when Marie said I was cute. But that's probably a story for another time.

For those of you who have been living in a pop-culture free bubble for the last four decades or so, Donny and Marie Osmond are a brother and sister duo who rose to fame in the late '60s and early '70s as a part of, and later apart from, their Osmond Family singing group. Donny was the breakout star of the clan, a screaming teenybopper idol with hits like "Puppy Love" and "Go Away Little Girl."

In the mid-70s he teamed up with his younger sister Marie for a TV variety show (remember those?) and the hits kept coming as a duo with songs like "I'm Leaving it All Up to You."

For her part, Marie had her biggest solo hit with the country ballad "Paper Roses" in 1973.

But as the seventies faded so did the peak of their popularity, and to many "Donny and Marie" became synonymous with schmaltz and cheese (as in cheesy).

There were comebacks aplenty both in and out of showbiz. Donny toured for years with "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" and had at least one other big hit "Soldier of Love" in 1989. Marie had more country hits and developed a hugely popular line of dolls. They even reunited for a syndicated talk show a few years back.

But the reason that Donny and Marie are here in Vegas is because of a little show called "Dancing with the Stars." Oh, and Oprah.

Marie appeared on the show in late 2007 and generated lots of buzz over her performances and a rather dramatic post dance faint. Her popularity on the show got Oprah Winfrey's attention and the entire Osmond clan reunited for an episode.

And now the brother and sister duo are back on the stages of Las Vegas, performing regularly at The Flamingo.

The show mostly consists of covers of other people's songs, starting with some duets between the two of them backed by a solid band and some energetic dancers. Their teasing sibling interaction was always the core of their act and it is still charmingly in place after all these years. You can tell that these two have a genuine affection for one another that goes beyond the shtick.

Marie gets a solo spotlight for awhile followed by Donny on his own and then the pair reunite to quickly buzz through their greatest hits, some of which even they admit are not the pinnacle of musical creation in history.

That right there is what makes the whole thing so darned smile inducing. They know they became a bit of a pop-culture joke but they are in on it. They know they aren't the best singers or dancers but who cares? They're having good, clean fun and they invite you along for the hayride.

If you're looking to nitpick, some of their choices in cover tunes aren't terribly fitting with who they are as performers. Marie's version of the hard driving Eurythmics tune "Would I Lie To You" comes off as uncomfortable and not just because of the tight leather ensemble she wears during it. And despite Donny's hero-worship of Stevie Wonder, his medley of the man's tunes mostly served to prove that he's not Stevie Wonder.

But as stated, that's nitpicking and I don't want to go too much further in that direction because I think Donny and Marie's very devoted fans, many of whom were in attendance the day I saw the show, would probably come after me.

The production is filled with the kind of songs and laughs that one would believe used to be the forte of the Rat Pack. It's the kind of show Clint Holmes and Gladys Knight and even Toni Braxton, who had this very stage before the Osmonds, used to do.

But now the Vegas variety show belongs to Donny and Marie and we're happy to have them.

Hotel Review Eastside Cannery BY Rick Garman

In Las Vegas, a "local's" casino is defined as anything not right on The Strip or Downtown that caters mostly to the residents of the city through low-cost restaurants and entertainment, low room rates (for friends or families visiting from out of town), low limits on gaming, and other budget minded offerings. The Cannery opened on the north side of town a few years ago and followed the blueprint almost to a T. Now, a sister property has opened on the east side of town, and it both follows that blueprint and throws it away at the same time.

The Eastside Cannery is located on Boulder Highway, one big block south of another local's favorite Sam's Town and near Arizona Charlie's and Boulder Station. For those of you unfamiliar with the neighborhood what you're going to want to do is take Flamingo (that's the street between Caesars and Bellagio) east about 6 miles and hang a right. In other words it's nowhere near the places most tourists want to go but that doesn't mean you shouldn't know about it, especially if you're one of those people who is always complaining about how expensive Vegas has gotten.

It's hard to miss the building. At 16 stories it's one of the tallest structures in that area of town and just to make sure you don't miss it they have added colored lights that cast patterns across the façade of the tower. If you fly into town you'll be able to see it since it's right off the main approach to McCarran International.

The original Cannery has a '40s theme (think Rosie the Riveter) but this one updates things by a couple of decades with a subtle '60s theme. This is mostly exhibited with a series of large paintings of iconic free-love era imagery such as a Volkswagen van and various go-go style beauties.

But that's as far as the theme goes, with most of the rest of the main casino floor done in a warm industrial feeling with exposed ductwork and brick everywhere. It's a cannery, after all. Note the can shaped door handles on your way inside.

There are plenty of games for those so inclined; varied denominations of slots and video poker plus table games of all stripe. Interesting to note that most of the machines are ultra-modern, with touch-screens and LCD displays. Even the standard reel-based machines have extra technological bells and whistles, so if all you're looking for is a classic slot machine you may not be in the right place.

Surrounding the casino is a bunch of restaurants and lounges, mostly low-cost budget affairs. There is no formal buffet but they do have something like it in the form of Sweet Lucy's, which is reviewed in our Dining section.

On the top floor is One-Six, a restaurant and lounge that offers some pretty great views of the surrounding Vegas valley, unblocked by neighboring tall buildings.

The standard rooms are generously sized and come with a sleekly modern design scheme, all clean lines and crisp linens. Big padded headboards loom over the pillow-top mattresses, which faces a 37" flat panel television over a big dresser. There's a nice sitting chair (suede in the room I saw) and a writing desk plus floor to ceiling windows offering more good views. Other amenities include high-speed Internet, an in-room refrigerator (not a mini-bar), iron and board, hairdryers, and more. The bathrooms are small compared to most modern Strip hotels but more than big enough to get done what you may need to get done in there.

Deluxe rooms are bigger and add a wet bar to go along with the extra floor space. They also feature significantly larger bathrooms with showers and Jacuzzi tubs alongside pocket doors that open into the main bedroom so you can luxuriate and see out the windows at the same time.

There is a decent sized pool area with plenty of chairs, a small stage for summertime entertainment, and a snack bar. But you do have to walk through the casino to get to the area so that's a definite demerit.

The turn from the local's casino norm here is that there really isn't a lot else going on at the hotel. There is no bowling alley or cheap food court or movie theaters, so your onsite entertainment options are fairly limited.

I had some issues with the specific staff members I was dealing with to tour the facility but everyone else in the normal customer service roles seemed very friendly and eager to make me feel at home. It's a nice change of pace from the often impersonal service you see on The Strip.

The room rates are the thing that should really get your attention. Standard rooms can get as low as $49 during the week and $69 on the weekend. And although you'll usually pay more than that it's not a lot more and so that means you're getting a very comfortable room in a very comfortable hotel for a fraction of the cost you'll pay on The Strip.

Yes, it's a drive to get here, which means you'll have to have a car at your disposal, but you can still come out way ahead. I've used this hypothetical situation in other hotel reviews on this site, but let's say you're staying for five nights and you get a rate of around $350 for those nights here at the Eastside Cannery. Throw in another $150 for a rental car and that puts you at $500 for your trouble. Or you can stay on The Strip, which will probably cost you at least $150 per night and pay for cabs everywhere you want to go - that's at least $800 right there. Think of what you can do with those three extra bills.

The Eastside Cannery is not the best local's hotel in town, nor is it the best value. But it is definitely worth knowing about, even if you aren't a local.

Efforts to further career cost ‘Britney’ his job on Strip
By: Jerry Fink/Las Vegas Sun

Britney Spears tribute artist Derrick Barry lost his job with the female impersonation revue “An Evening at La Cage” at the Riviera, but the 25-year-old entertainer sees the loss as an opportunity to further his career.

He’s in the running for one of the leads in “Auditing Richard Biggs,” a comedy that will be filmed in Louisiana next year, he says. He’s been contacted by a playwright in New York who is creating a musical legends revue for an international tour next year. “He wants me to close the show as Britney, a 10- or 15-minute set,” he says.

He’s still busy doing his Britney act, recently appearing in San Diego and as a special guest with ventriloquist Terry Fator at the Las Vegas Hilton.

Lounge singer has moved up.
By: Jerry Fink/Las Vegas Sun

Five years ago T. Fox was performing in a wide spot in a hallway on the second floor of the Tropicana. The makeshift lounge was at the entry to the Island Buffet.

He shared the spot with a bird act.

The venue was confining, almost claustrophobic for the 100 or so fans who crowded into the close quarters to listen and to watch. But Fox energized the hallway with his nonstop audience interaction, doing impressions and singing covers of songs by the likes of Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Luther Vandross and Sammy Davis Jr. Standards, rock, R&B, jazz. Nothing was outside of Fox’s repertoire.

Today, the walls have come down.

He’s gone from an aisle to a six-lane boulevard — the Strip between Flamingo and Harmon.

Direct from Broadway.
‘Phantom’ music man has learned what works in Las Vegas, what doesn’t.
By: Jerry Fink/Las Vegas Sun

“Phantom” musical director Jack Gaughan arrived in Las Vegas at the right time.

He came to town as conductor with a touring company of “Chicago” in 1999 and never left.

Broadway, or at least overtures to Broadway, was beginning to blossom in the desert.

“The whole idea of Broadway West. I don’t know where it started. I think it started in New York because a spate of Broadway shows were coming west,” Gaughan says. “Well, we aren’t Broadway West. What we are is a town that has a lot of entertainment that competes for Broadway shows.

“I think those shows are successful here when they fit a certain demographic — and also have brand recognition, like “Mamma Mia!” with Abba music. ‘Phantom’ of course has its own recognition.”

NORM: Bellagio definitely is not on market.

An East Coast gaming giant made an overture to buy Bellagio from MGM Mirage early in the Wall Street meltdown but was rebuffed, it was learned.

The buyer was identified as Peter Carlino, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Pennsylvania-based Penn National Gaming, Inc., which includes casinos, racetracks and resorts.

Steve Wynn, who built the Bellagio in the late 1990s for $1.6 billion, said Carlino confirmed he "wanted to buy Bellagio but Terry Lanni said it was not for sale. That was three weeks ago."

Alan Feldman, vice president of communications for MGM Mirage, said, "These rumors fly around all the time." He added, "we're not in position to rule it out, if somebody had the money, but who has the money in this economy?"

Wynn's comment came during an interview in which he was asked whether he had an interest in buying back the Bellagio.

Wynn sold the Bellagio in June 2000 as part of his $6.6 billion deal that put his Mirage Resorts properties under the MGM Grand Inc. umbrella. He turned around and purchased the Desert Inn and built Wynn Las Vegas on the site.

If the MGM Mirage sells off any properties, Wynn predicts it probably would be the 50 percent it owns in the Borgata in Atlantic City with Boyd Gaming.

Wynn said his focus is on his own backyard.

"Don't look for me to buy anything on the cheap," Wynn said. He has big plans to develop the golf course land at Wynn Las Vegas, where he has a convention center project planned on the 150-acre site.

With a deep recession being forecast, "2009 will separate the men from the boys," Wynn said.

NORM: Smiling on Las Vegas.
Flamingo building wrap features toothy Donny and Marie.

Donny and Marie's pearly whites are putting smiles on management at the Flamingo Las Vegas.

A 67,500-square-foot building wrap that features their famous smiles is creating a lot of attention.

It's not only quickly become one of most photographed sites on the Strip, but many fans are requesting room assignments that match Donny and Marie's teeth and eyes, according to president Don Marrandino.

Marie's toothy smile is 8 feet high and five windows wide. Skytag, the company that made the wrap, estimates that if the size of Donny's head was true to life, he would be more than 1,000 feet tall.

To their right is a 20,000-square-foot image of comedy magician Nathan Burton.

Burton, who has the 4 p.m. show at the Flamingo, is convinced the wrap, and sharing the showroom with Donny and Marie, has made a major difference in sales.

"Of all the marketing I do, my ticket sales went up 30 percent overnight once the wrap went up. I did a record 550 people on Sunday.

"The economy's hurting everybody else, but I think it's helping me because people with families can't afford a Cirque show."

It helps, he said, that Donny and Marie, "appeal to everyone. They have superfans who come in 10-15 times. They're successful on their own, but together they're a powerhouse. With this economy, you're getting two for one."

Donny and Marie fans clearly agree. They're packing the 700-seat showroom.

Marrandino said an extension is coming "any day now."

SHOW REVIEW: 'O'
Decade later, 'O' still a memorable experience.
By MIKE WEATHERFORD/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Time has not been the enemy of "O." Success? Maybe.

But if you haven't seen "Le Reve," or other Cirque du Soleils that recycled too many of the red waistcoats from the 10-year-old aqua-spectacular, jump in. The water's still fine.

"O" is still that perfect junction between Cirque's early life as a classy circus and the broad-ranging theatrical entity it's now trying to become. The acrobats are the stars, but the staging makes it memorable.

The playing area morphs from deep lake to (almost) dry land in a few moments, creating one-of-a-kind visuals such as carousel horses circling over the water.

LEGENDARY LAS VEGAS HEADLINERS: Riveting Rose
ROSE MARIE: TV's sassy Sally enjoys lifelong career, including opening night at Flamingo.

By STEPHEN MICHAEL SHEARER SPECIAL TO THE REVIEW-JOURNAL

Most people probably remember Rose Marie as the wisecracking Sally Rogers from "The Dick Van Dyke Show" of the 1960s, but the performer with the trademark bow in her hair also played an important role in Las Vegas' storied past.

Rose Marie co-headlined with Jimmy Durante, Xavier Cugat and others on the opening night of Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel's Flamingo Las Vegas Dec. 26, 1946.

It was an easy decision to accept the job offer from Billy Wilkerson once she knew the lineup, Rose Marie told me during an interview this summer at her colonial-style home in Southern California.

NORM: E-mail about duo's return creates stir

An e-mail announcing the possibility that Siegfried & Roy would be returning to the stage "on a regular basis" is raising eyebrows.

The announcement, received by several local reporters about 7 p.m. Saturday, appeared to have come from public relations for the new "Raw Talent Live" show at the Sahara.

Eighteen hours later, another e-mail from the same e-mail address suggested the announcement was a hoax perpetrated by a hacker.

Sunday's statement from the public relations department for Viashow Inc. read: "Someone obtain the password to the Viashow PR account.

"The previous communication is completely unfounded and not true, please disregard … problem has been corrected."

Viashow, operated by Nicole "ND" Durr, is producing "Raw Talent Live" and ND's Space, an entertainment venue that is going into The Palazzo.

The initial e-mail I received included an invitation to interview Siegfried & Roy after they attended Sunday's "Raw Talent Live."

"The trio is have begun discussing the possibility of joining forces on a project completely separate from the one you reported on in January earlier this year that they're working on with Bernie Yuman and Ken Sunshine at the Palazzo.

"And yes, this project proposal could involve the icons returning to the stage with ND on a regular basis with their legendary magical act which captivated so many for years at The Mirage."

Siegfried & Roy reportedly have an exclusive deal to perform a one-time show for Larry Ruvo's "Keep Memory Alive" Alzheimer's gala at Bellagio in February. The deal includes a TV commitment.

The illusionists provided financial backing for Durr's "Havana Nights," which had a brief engagement at the Stardust in 2004.

An e-mail sent to Durr on Sunday was not answered by deadline.

VEGAS CLAY HEADS
By: Doug Elfman/Las Vegas Review Journal

Criss Angel sat down to have his likeness made for the Vegas Tussauds. His waxiness will show up in February in a revamped room called Viva Vegas, which will include the current waxy likeness of the Blue Man Group, Lance Burton and the Rat Pack.

Tussauds also is bringing in another new wax of a Las Vegas local. Chapman refuses to tell me which Vegas legend is coming to Tussauds. I looked at her and guessed Oscar Goodman because Oscar isn't waxed there yet, but she wouldn't spill the beans.

Coming to Tussauds on Nov. 10: Alvin and the Chipmunks, 18 inches tall. Coming Nov. 13: Daniel Craig as James Bond. (Admission runs $15-$25 for, variously, kids 7 and up; students, Nevada residents and seniors. For groups, 862-7805.)

Culinary revolutionary Puck re-opens Postrio at The Venetian.
By: Robin Leach/Vegas Luxe Life/Las Vegas Weekly

Single-handedly, since opening Spago in Caesars Palace back in 1991, superstar celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck has revolutionized the Vegas fine- dining scene. As the first starchef to arrive in town, he led the invasion of other big-name culinary kings who followed him slowly to Sin City. He opened follow-up restaurants all over the Strip, including Chinois, also at Caesars Palace; his bar and grill at MGM Grand; Lupo at Mandalay Bay; the Puck Café at Springs Preserve; and the newest, Cut steak house at Palazzo.

I haven’t forgotten Postrio at the Venetian — because its one of my all time favorite dining spots. It opened back in 2000, when movie superstar Sophia Loren first cut the red ribbon at The Venetian -– and its been a hangout for stars ever since. Wolf opened it after the success of the same-named restaurant he ran in San Francisco -– but decided earlier this year to give it a top-to-bottom makeover.

A few days ago, he came to town to officially reopen it after a monthlong closing — and it is spectacular. He even managed to have the bar free-flow right out of the restaurant into the main St. Mark’s Square, and its large enough to enjoy a meal there, too. Just behind, is a large chef’s table to seat 12 guests in one grouping or 12 single diners who want to make new friends over a magnificent meal. His menu that marries Mediterranean influences with seasonal American fare also got a new look and the restaurant design and decorations are all new, modern, upgraded and hip.

“It was time to modernize it,” Wolf told me. “I am thrilled the way it turned out. We managed to keep the outdoor café open while we did the interior construction — and amazing in this day and age we only ran one week late with our new-look project!”

Luxor President Rappaport takes $100 million bet on Believe.
By: Robin Leach/Vegas Luxe Life/Las Vegas Weekly

Bankrolling a major Strip spectacular is a major financial undertaking -– not just in these uncertain economic times but any time! Meet Luxor President Felix Rappaport, who made the ultimate $100 million bet on Cirque du Soleil and Mindfreak magician Criss Angel to underwrite their new partnership — and his 15-year-dream to bring Believe to fruition.

Now, just four days away from the glittering and glamorous first night gala, the MGM corporate executive is cool and calm about the mega-million dollar commitment he made the final “go-no-go” solo decision on. He told me: “I’ve been through this before. I understand how the creation process works -– and all that it takes to go from idea to final execution. I was at our other MGM hotels when Cirque launched Mystere and Zumanity along with their other Vegas shows. I have never met a more disciplined hard working star than Criss to ensure this works as a huge winner. I have absolute belief in Guy Laliberte and his Cirque team of creators and that they are 100 percent behind this being a total success.

“I know neither of them will rest until it is the best. The audiences will tell us what they like and want and I feel comfortable with all the progress the process has made since the first day of previews a month ago. Criss and Cirque will go on tweaking — that’s the way it is but I can tell you it is a spectacular entrance for the audience and just as spectacular a finale for them to remember.”

Rappaport acknowledged that some people who saw the first preview showcase were unhappy about certain aspects of the show. “It’s come a mighty long way — 10 times better — since then. There were so many construction and permit difficulties making a new showroom specially for this show. It’s turned out to be an incredibly marvelous and beautiful theater. Once previews got underway all the additional new illusions could be worked in -– and now they are all working incredibly well in Believe. Some members of the initial audiences didn’t even notice the other cast illusions because they focused everything on Criss but now people are understanding the show they see all of its other aspects of creativity. There are over 20 magical elements in this production -– not as stand-alones but as an integral part of the storytelling -– and that’s a real first.

“Like all Cirque shows this is a tremendous evolution process but it will be the best show possible -– and it will continue evolving even five or six months after this week — so that it will be a solid 10-year hit and beyond even that. Our faith has been borne out already with four fully sold out preview weeks. The gross was $5 million and in terms of daily sales

Believe is averaging higher or equal to all the other Cirque shows here. Cirque never leaves a show alone even when it’s up and running — they go on always improving it for the better and the same will be true here.”

The casino resort president told me that he and Criss are expecting a full turnout of stars — including numerous Vegas-based magicians and Strip entertainers -– for Friday’s celebrity gala on the “black carpet” and at the Halloween-themed pool party after the premiere performance. “It will be a fabulous night -– the best that show-business can be,” he promised.

Luxe Life returns with Day 3 of our countdown tomorrow -– after my backstage visit to Criss following tonight’s kickoff to the final week of previews. Luxe Life will interview Criss, Guy, director and co-writer Serge Denoncourt on Friday just hours before the curtain rises -– and we’ll have all of that incredible first night coverage with videos, photos and stories here at our new VegasDeluxe site as of 6 a.m. Saturday morning.

Vegas4Visitors Weekly Awards BY Rick Garman

The Job Security of the Week Award goes to Donny and Marie Osmond, whose show at The Flamingo is doing gangbusters apparently. Rumor has it that they will extend their six-month deal to as much as two years.

The Is Not-Is Too Argument of the Week Award goes to the various people who have seen the previews of the new Criss Angel/Cirque du Soleil show at Luxor. Widely distributed stories have some people saying it’s an unmitigated disaster while others are saying it’s really quite good. The official opening is Halloween night so expect to see lots of media after that.

The UFO Sighting of the Week Award goes to the M Resort Lightship, a big blimp with a giant LED screen on it currently floating around Las Vegas advertising the new hotel and casino set to open in 2009.

The Reprieve of the Week (and perhaps the Century) Award goes to The Tropicana. For the last 10 years or so there have been multiple plans to tear the hotel down or completely overhaul it, all of which, for one reason or another, have never materialized. The latest plan by the current owners was going to see most of the property bulldozed and rebuilt into a 10,000 room mega-resort. Those plans, according to the owner, have officially been dropped and the Tropicana will live on.

Show Review: The Jersey Boys By Rick Garman

Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons changed the face of American music in the 1960s. Their tight vocal harmonies led by Valli's soaring falsetto were layered over a mix of rock and Motown, turning the street-corner doo-wop genre from a bland past time to an international movement. Only the Beatles and the Beach Boys rivaled their success in the era and their string of consecutive hits were almost mind boggling: "Sherry," "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Walk Like a Man," "Rag Doll," "Let's Hang On," "Working My Way Back to You." The list goes on and on. Along the way, the group went through a string of ups and downs: struggling to get noticed, the pitfalls of sudden fame, massive money mismanagement, substance abuse problems, family drama… it’s the makings of every VH1 "Behind the Music" documentary ever produced.

It's an interesting story, I think, but one that is not fully explored in the hit musical "The Jersey Boys," now playing at the Palazzo in Las Vegas.

Audiences adore this show and it's easy to see why. It's a veritable walk down musical memory lane, packed full with almost every song the group ever did before, during, and after the peak of their fame. Combine great songs with an amazing cast that almost perfectly matches the original's energy and talent and you have the makings of a great revue.

But this is not a revue it's a full-on musical that attempts to tell the group's stories, both professional and personal. We see how they came together, how they fought to get noticed, and the inspiration for many of their hits. "Big Girls Don't Cry" came from a scene in a John Wayne movie, for instance. We see them getting married, getting divorced, fighting, making up, getting involved with the mob, breaking up, continuing on, recording music, performing music, dreaming up music, touring, fighting some more, and on it goes.

What we don't get, unfortunately, is any kind of true grasp of who these people were. Yes, we get that Tommy was the fast-talking, street wise hustler who essentially created the group. We understand that Frankie was a naive teenager with a talent he didn't know how to fully exploit. We see that Bob was the real genius behind the music, writing most of their hit songs. And we know that Nick was the relatively drama-free one. But we know all this through snippets of dialogue; brief, rushed scenes that seem mostly designed to set up the next song than to delve into an exploration of these characters and their motivations beyond fame and money. Everybody comes off as one-note caricatures instead of multi-layered human beings.

The only reason this is a problem is because in the second act, when the going gets tough as it always does in second acts, they seem to be expecting the audience to connect on some level to their struggles. When a family tragedy strikes Frankie, it is constructed as if it is supposed to be the emotional climax of the show. But the person at the heart of the tragedy is only glimpsed once for about 30 seconds and Frankie's relationship with that person comprises about two minutes of material throughout the entire two hour production.

What happens is heart-breaking but it doesn't actually break your heart because you don't know the players involved well enough to be that emotionally invested in what happens to them.

I'm spending a lot of time talking about this because this is musical theater, not just music. I think it’s important to understand that while "The Jersey Boys" is a terrific night of musical entertainment it isn't a terrific piece of legitimate theater, which it clearly aspires to be.

One other word of caution: Jersey boys from the '50s and '60s, were not, as a general rule, genteel creatures. This is not a family friendly show from a language and content perspective.

But who cares, right? You're going for the music and that's where the show shines. The audience I saw the show with was mostly made up of people of an age that meant they probably grew up listening to these songs and their enthusiastic response rattled the rafters. I grew up about a decade behind The Four Seasons' zenith but even I know great music when I hear it. Heck, I still have "She-hare-hare-air-air-air-ree bay-yay-bee" stuck in my head. There are worse things.

If you're a fan of their music, or of music in general, and your primary goal is to walk away (like a man, perhaps) having had a toe-tapping good time then this is the show for you. If, however, you want more theater in your musical theater experience, this one is going to disappoint, I think. I usually want the latter and while I was disappointed, the sheer strength of the songs and how well they were performed are what wound up mattering the most.

Updated Hotel Review: Caesars Palace By Rick Garman

When Caesars opened in the 60's it was THE place to see and be seen. Its audacious Roman Empire theme was great silly fun - the ultimate in tacky Las Vegas glamour. For good or ill (depending on your point of view, I suppose), most of the kitschy glitz is gone due to ongoing facelifts and expansions. Don't get me wrong, the look these days is truly elegant, light, and airy with expanses of marble and detail work done to continue the Roman theme. But Caesars really was the last place on The Strip where you could get a taste of old Las Vegas evoking images of the Rat Pack era.

Okay, I'm done complaining because once I get over those nostalgia pains Caesars is one of the most beautiful hotels in town. Inside and out you'll find ornate columns, colonnades, statuary, paintings, and toga-clad models walking around to give you that perfect photo opportunity (okay, so they didn't get rid of all the tacky stuff… Thank God!).

If you’re driving in, you’ll have plenty of time to admire the Caesars scenery as you hike from the parking garage to the registration desk. The fact that they don’t have sherpas standing by to help you make the ridiculously long trek through the casino laden down with luggage seems like a missed opportunity.

The lobby is huge and gorgeous, a rotunda with gleaming statuary and frescos. Even better, they have a single line check-in queue, eschewing the multi-line check-in that has become increasingly more popular for reasons that escape me.

The older rooms in the Forum Tower have gotten a rehab, turning them into simple but sleek charmers. Rooms in the Palace Tower (completed in '97) are more palatial - many have his and her baths connected by a dual shower stall. All are generously appointed and larger than average.

If you can, though, you should try to get a room in the Augustus Tower (completed in 2005). These giant 600 square-feet digs feature plush couches, a table and chairs, a writing desk, a sleek dark wood wall unit with a mini-bar, a flat panel television, and a bathroom big enough for the Gods complete with a whirlpool tub, separate shower, and plenty of marble. The beds are silly comfortable and the entire room gives you a feeling that you are staying someplace special.

And one other request you might want to ask for as you are checking in: try to get a room on the south side of the Augustus Tower so you can have an unparalleled view of the Fountains at Bellagio.

By the way, the rooms in the older Roman and Centurian Towers are pretty basic and you can find better accommodations for less money.

The casino and the rest of the public areas encompass what seems like more square-footage than it actually does. The years of adding on to the property have made this one of the most rambling, most confusing gaming areas in town – I can’t tell you how many times I was sure I was heading for the room only to find myself going in the complete opposite direction. Watch the signs is all I’m saying.

The good news about that rambling layout is that there are lots of options for gaming spaces. The main table area is under a dome that dates back to the very early days of the hotel. Adjacent on both sides are some slots and video poker.

Then you’re off to another land through the Pussycat Dolls casino area which features tables and pole dancers (fully, albeit skimpily clothed). It had to happen.

Next is the big sports book and then more casino with more table games and slots and video poker. You want choices, you got choices.

Of course, I'd be remiss in not mentioning the Colosseum - a 4,000-seat showroom currently featuring Bette Midler, Cher, and Elton John doing regular stands and other big stars popping up occasionally. It's a nice room but not quite like being in Rome.

There are nightclubs, the adjacent Roman Themed "shopping experience" The Forum Shops, and about a bazillion restaurants. Check the related reviews section of the Caesars page for more things to see, do, and eat there.

The pool area is among the most beautiful in town. Lush gardens surround the four pools, one of which has a covered colonnade in the center for cooling off. Adjacent to this is a spa, which among the usual suspects like massages and workout equipment, has a full-service salon, Zen meditation garden, and a rock-climbing wall.

Caesars Palace of yore and of recent is truly a glorious place but what price glory? A lot. I suppose the planets may align themselves in such a way that you might be able to swing a room here for around $120 a night on a very slow weekday but only if they are truly desperate (and they usually aren't). Normally you'll be forking over at least $150 a night on weekdays (often over $200) and a minimum of $200 on the weekends (often well over $300).

We love to celebrate the increasingly rare historic hotels in Las Vegas, but usually those places are better in our memories than they are in modern-day reality. But Caesars has created a blueprint for how you can keep an older hotel not just alive, but thriving. These really are Caesars glory days.

From "The Vegas Eye"

Rick Scores:
Ricks Cabaret is finally opened to the public and I can tell you from years of experience this is most entertaining gentlemens clubs in Las Vegas. From the minute you walk in you notice a spacious laid back atmosphere which is a needed change for this industry. This was also one of the first times when I could actually taste alcohol in my drink. For those looking for a more intimate surroundings you should visit The Grand Havana Room located upstairs. One unexpected suprise was the aerial acrobatics. It seemed as if these girls had come straight of a Cirque du Soliel. So if your looking for a good time this blogger would suggest checking out Rick's during their grand opening week and see for yourself.

Monti-licious from The Vegas Eye

This week in Las Vegas the political machine is on.  I'm quite impartial and really not politically motivated but let's be real, none of us can get away from it right now.  The television and radio ads, the signs along all the streets and the constant robo calls.  It's just too much.

In keeping with the political season, Bette Midler held a rally for the Obama campaign at Krave nightclub at Planet HollywoodFrank Marino made disparaging remarks about the Republican candidate, Sarah Palin, before introducing Bette Midler to the Obama  supporters.  I can only add,  "watch your step Frank, it's not good to be bad to Sarah".

Sarah Palin was in Las Vegas this week where the crowd started gathering some five hours before her arrival.  Before arriving in Nevada to make the Reno and Las Vegas scenes she appeared on Saturday Night Live, and was delicious.  The ratings for SNL were the best in the last thirty years.  Someone out there likes her, that's for sure.

Seems like both of the major parties keep trying to dig up dirt and quite frankly, I'm over it.  I even turned off television's The View because there's just too much political nonsense.  With only a few days left you have to wonder what more there is to discuss.  One thing for sure, history will be made in November.

For the last few months I've been talking and writing about the opening of Criss Angel's show Believe at the Luxor which will be another Cirque Du Soleil creation.  It's finally time for the opening but I will be out of town doing my own comeback, or maybe it's another comeback,  at the Taj Majal in Atlantic City.  Not to worry, I'll catch the show when I return but through all the delays and hype surrounding Believe, we still have to give Criss the benefit of the doubt.  After all, he does have television credentials and creation of this show cost over 100 million dollars.  Without benefit of seeing the show, and in my opinion, I think Las Vegas has reached its max on Cirque Du Soleil.  Too much Cirque!

Cirque Du Soleil productions are featured all over Las Vegas such as Love at The Mirage, Ka at the MGM, Zumanity at New York New York, Mystere at TI, which was the first to hit Las Vegas, but the winner of the Las Vegas Cirque scene is "O" at Bellagio.  I'm not even sure if that's all the Cirque shows in town but you get the picture.

This trend holds true for the magic shows.  Las Vegas has a way of going from theme to theme.  Just a few short years ago Las Vegas was touted as the perfect family vacation destination.  That theme only lasted a few seasons.  Even the addition of roller coasters on the strip couldn't seem to manifest the ideal scene for the entire family.  The idea was an amusement park with gaming.  What I'm trying to see or feel as a columnist is something new, something innovative, something creative.  Are we themed out?

Enjoyed the opening of a fabulous new restaurant Via Brasil Steakhouse at Charleston and Ft. Apache.  I say fabulous because it's another one of those dining experiences with an outstanding wine collection. and impeccable service.  Of course the menu and presentation is important but I was also taken by the decor.  Some might consider an evening at Via Brasil a bit on the pricey side for an off-strip restaurant, but you can be the judge of that. The menu is price-fixed" -with 3 different tiers. -all of which include exceptional food.

My wonderful friend Dick Finney received his star on the Las Vegas Walk of Fame.  Dick and yours truly have shared a rather long history and I'll always remember how kind he was when I arrived in Las Vegas more than ten years ago.  Dick  is one of those rare mainstays in Las Vegas and is known as a co-producer of La Cage at the Riviera as well as Viva Las Vegas and the Rat Pack is Back both showing at the Plaza downtown.  We all love Dick Finney and he deserves his star. Speaking of downtown, The Plaza (name change coming up??) is fast becomng the entertainment capital of this area., what with The Rat Pack, The Dome, their own R&B vocal group, and Viva Las Vegas.
