Last of the red-hot showgirls.
By: Jerry Fink/Las Vegas Sun

The two dazzling shows are museum pieces, windows into Las Vegas’ glamorous past when feathers, furs and sequins barely covered leggy showgirls.

It’s hard to look at the scantily clad young dancers in “Folies Bergere” and “Donn Arden’s Jubilee!” and think of them as relics. But they perform in the last of the extravagant topless productions that helped propel a small desert town into the league of Paris, London and New York when it came to brilliant entertainment.

For decades endless rows of chorus lines helped gamblers forget their losses at the tables. The productions featured countless specialty acts from around the world, many of which rose from the ranks — such as Siegfried & Roy and Lance Burton — to become headliners. It was a heady period for ambitious young musicians, who worked two or more gigs a night and performed from sundown to sunup in orchestras and bands from one end of town to the other.

New music, magic acts give Vegas taste of something different.
By: Jerry Fink/Las Vegas Sun

Two dynamic shows have opened in Vegas — one is music, the other magic.

“Hitzville” is a Motown revue loaded with talent led by Jin-Jin Reeves.

“Magic at the Edge” stars Jeff McBride, an extraordinary entertainer who mixes magic and Kabuki theater in a no-frills production that will amaze you.

BROWN BACK AT NUGGET by Norm Clarke

Impressionist Gordie Brown
has signed a two-year deal that will put him in the Golden Nugget's new 680-seat showroom.

It's a return to the Nugget for Brown, who was billed as "Downtown" Gordie Brown when he headlined there in 2004 and 2005.

Brown is currently opening for Celine Dion on her North American tour.

Brown will open at the Nugget on Feb. 3, just days after Dion's tour ends Jan. 30.

The Nugget opted not to renew its contract for the one-man comic play "Defending the Caveman."

SHOW REVIEW: Terry Fator
Testing the Waters: Ventriloquist Terry Fator trying out new segments during run-up to Mirage debut.

By MIKE WEATHERFORD/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Terry Fator's got talent, and America loves him. There's no arguing that.

Does he have an act that will sustain that adoration for five whole years? Time will tell. But there's no raining on his parade right now.

The ventriloquist, who hit the jackpot on "America's Got Talent" last year, tells his packed house at the Las Vegas Hilton that he will stay after the show to meet them. The line forms three or four people wide, and runs more than 60 yards back, from Fator's post near the showroom doors to the Shimmer Cabaret and beyond.

Whoever wins the third season of "Got Talent" on Oct. 1 will have eyes full of dollar signs after Fator rocketed from state fairs to a five-year deal at The Mirage, touted to be worth $100 million. (Tickets aren't yet on sale for shows starting Feb. 9, but capacity houses at $100 per ticket would generate more than $30 million per year).

Las Vegas Top Ten Values September 2009 from The Las Vegas Advisor.

1. Steak Dinner – Ellis Island – 24 Hours – $6.95
The complete steak dinner at Ellis Island is the best-value meal deal in a city full of good-value meal deals. It’s a 10-ounce filet-cut sirloin, which comes with salad, garlic green beans, choice of potato, and fresh microbrewed beer, all for $6.95. You can’t beat that with a stick.

2. Shrimp Cocktail – Golden Gate – 11 am-2 am – 99¢
The Golden Gate shrimp cocktail went up a buck last April after more than 15 years at 99¢? The one that shocked the bargain-city faithful to their collective core? The one whose 100% increase should’ve been enough to drop it entirely from consideration? That shrimp cocktail? Well, there’s more to this than meets the eye. First, all you have to do is show a players club card to get the shrimp at the old price. Sure, the extra step (if you’re not already a member) might’ve docked the deal a few spots, but a coupla sign-up bennies mitigate the five-minute inconvenience. More important, the shrimp are bigger and better.

3. Breakfast Special – Wild Wild West – 24 Hours – $1.49
The $1.49 breakfast special at Wild Wild West is the same one we’ve been touting for the past several months that’s also served at Wildfire, Gold Rush, and Magic Star. However, now it’s available 24 hours at WWW, as opposed to just midnight to 11 am at the others.

4. Sign-Up Promotion – Hooters – Daily – Free
The power of the Hooters players club sign-up is in the free tickets for the Bobby Slayton show, although some other goodies come with the deal.

5. Happy Hour – Blue Martini – 4-8pm – 50% off
Of the many excellent happy hours around town, the non-casino HH at Town Square’s Blue Martini stands out with 50% pricing on fantastic food and drinks for four hours every evening. Plus, the happy hour has become a sizzling social event that attracts lots of Las Vegas locals. It’s the perfect excuse to head down to Town Square, which continues to develop into a dining, shopping, and entertainment force.

6. Buffet – Mirage – Daily – $13.95-$24.95
The Mirage Cravings buffet is convenient at center Strip, has better hours than most (opening for dinner at 3 pm), and features an expansive choice of gourmet offerings. Tour the large selection first to take in the variety: a half-dozen soups; dim sum, sushi, Chinese appetizers, and salads at the Asian station; antipasto bar; barbecue station; bagel fixin’s; made-to-order salads, extensive desserts; and more. The Mirage is the best-value gourmet superbuffet, with the highest quality and lowest prices, among Las Vegas’ best spreads.

7. Fontana Bar – Bellagio – Daily – $6
The $6 charge at the Fontana Lounge is the cost of a beer to satisfy the one-drink minimum and see the show in Las Vegas’ classiest lounge.

8. Hot Dog – South Point – 11 am-5 pm daily – 75¢
Removed from the Top Ten is the Tropicana’s “Comedy Stop,” which implemented a surprising $2 price increase after years of standing pat and at a time when most prices in town are going in the opposite direction. (What can we say? The “Comedy Stop” is independent, but it’s still the Trop.) Taking its place is the hot dog sold from the sports book cart at South Point. It’s just 75¢ for an all-beef Vienna, with kraut and onions added at no extra charge. The same deal is available in the Suncoast sports book, but South Point is more easily accessible, and you can check out the casino’s new tower.

9. Parlay Card – Hard Rock – Weekly – Free
Number 9 on this month’s hit parade is the Hard Rock’s excellent free-parlay-card deal, introduced mid-season last year, but rockin’ the whole 17 weeks this year. You can play a free 4-, 5-, 6-, or 7-team parlay with an expected value of at least $3.13 per card.

10. Monday Night Football Parties – Sam's Town – Mondays – Free
Football parties will be the highlight of Monday nights through December. We checked out a bunch of them and found one, the party at Sam’s Town, to be of Top Ten caliber. You have a choice of a free hot dog or  hamburger, and the servers load ‘em up with tomatoes, lettuce, onions, and jalapenos if you like. You also get a free beer. We’ll cover all the parties in detail in the October LVA

Barry Manilow Writes The Songs, Performs With Passion In Las Vegas

By: Erika Bayer-Polak
Source: www.accessvegas.com

Who hasn’t sung Barry Manilow’s “Copacabana” at some point or another? Well, if you generally only sing the song in the shower or car because you’re too uncomfortable letting the general public, or certain loved ones, know your true fondness for the tune, imagine being able to sing it unabashedly with about 1,600 other people. Yes, it can be quite a feeling.

Manilow’s show, “Manilow: Music and Passion,” is more than a concert, it is a true Las Vegas show with dancing and sets and boas and all of those Las Vegas-themed props that come to mind. Considering many of Manilow’s hits have been somewhat mellow tunes, the show is surprisingly up-beat and energetic. While he still sings his universally known crooner melodies, such as, “Mandy,” “I Write the Songs” and “Can’t Smile Without You,” among others, he manages to keep the pace of the show lively.

It is also quite a sight to see the sexagenarian swivel and thrust his hips like he is conjuring Elvis’ spirit — yes, Elvis played the showroom numerous times — and as he does so, the audience who cross every point on the age spectrum react and respond enthusiastically.

An unusual aspect of the show is that throughout the concert Manilow receives standing ovations by a decent portion of the audience after each song, granted this may or may not occur during every show, but that is beside the point. The amount of gratitude and respect his audiences have for him is beyond the norm, but not out of line for a man who has had such a distinguished and lengthy musical career, and it probably helps that his voice is as strong as ever.

During the show Manilow, not surprisingly, covers most, if not all, of his major hits, but he also takes time to let his backup singers shine, which not all performers do, and this seems to say quite a bit for his character and ego. His backup singers are deserving of their time in the spotlight, they can dance and sing with the best; their performance during a medley of songs from the 1960s is terrific.

If you plan on seeing this show, of course it would help if you enjoy at least one of Manilow’s songs, it will give you something to look forward to, but even if you do not know of one of his song’s that you are fond of, chances are, you will still have a blast. It is hard to not get into his show, it is more than a concert and probably more fun than most people expect, even his die-hard fans, and that is a tough sell, but he manages.

Slot Reviews by Gayle Mitchell

Game of Life: Gettin’ Paid: Atronic. 86-96%. 3 spins.
This version of the Game of Life provides a progressive jackpot and features ‘add-ons’ that are miniature icons where when five are displayed anywhere, the Spin and Win Bonus event begins on the top screen. The result of the wheel spin is either added credits or the Paycheck Bonus. For the Paycheck Bonus, the screen changes to display 9 paycheck cards, one of which is the progressive jackpot win. You qualify for three picks and possibly more if you grab additional bonus symbols. This progressive jackpot can mean you are ‘gettin’ paid’ an extra $1000 or $2000.

Heart of Vegas: Aristocrat. 87-95%. 3 spins.
It’s all about Vegas with the symbols of the city and a heart that is wild. The familiar ‘Welcome to Las Vegas’ sign is the scatter pay and awards 10 free spins for 3 of them while the wild heart appears on the next reel and stays for future spins. This is the main feature of the game in that a wild heart is added after each spin thus the symbol appears on 4 of the 5 reels after 5 spins and stays for the following 5 spins. This results in some rewarding spins when 80% of the reels are wild. Also, should the Welcome to Las Vegas sign appear during this round, you get 5 more spins and the process of adding wild hearts begins again. The wild awards for this game will do your heart good.

Glitz: Wms Gaming. 86-96%. 1-2 spins
Five reels, 60 paylines, gemstones and jewelry supply the ‘glitz’ for this slot. There are plenty of ways to win as 3 of the 5 reels display four symbols while the first 2 reel symbols become wild symbols and multipliers during a freebie spin event. There are 3 ways to enter the free spin bonus round—a) scatter pays displayed on third, fourth and fifth reels, you then select a bonus symbol that is held for extra credits. b) matching symbols on reels 1 and 2 are then held during the free spins. c) if both ways are displayed, you select a bonus and the number of free spins is increased to 20. This game ‘sparkles’ in a lot of winning ways.

Vampire Weekend's hot streak continues with Vegas debut.
By JASON BRACELIN/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

If their nameunds like it was cribbed from some dodgy, low-budget horror film, it's because it was.

Borrowing their handle from a homemade movie their frontman made when he was a kid, Vampire Weekend thankfully don't suck like the titular fiends of said flick.

Awash in pan-global influences and a pronounced literary bent, Vampire Weekend's influences range from percussive African music to touches of classical to spry, highly self-aware indie rock.

As such, you can hear elements of the Police, Paul Simon and Pavement in their equally symphonic and understated tunes, which refract about in any number of directions, like light passing through a prism.

It's a somewhat unlikely sound that's catalyzed an equally unlikely success story: After garnering early buzz on the Internet last year, Vampire Weekend's hot streak has continued, as they were named "The Year's Best New Band" in Spin and played "Saturday Night Live" this past spring.

Check 'em out when they make their Vegas debut next week. It'll be a lot to, um, sink your fangs into.

See Vampire Weekend at 8 p.m. Monday at The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel, 4455 Paradise Road. Tickets are $20; call 693-5066.

NORM: Together Again

Flamingo performers Nathan Burton, Marie Osmond cross paths 17 years later.

For years, it has been one of Nathan Burton's prized possessions.

It's been in his collection of show business keepsakes since he was a teen.

Now 35, Burton was an aspiring magician in Fort Smith, Ark., in 1991, "doing birthday parties and school shows. Anytime someone needed a magician, I was there."

At one of his shows, somebody liked what he saw.

"I got a call from a promoter," he recalled.

Next thing he knew, a poster was being plastered all over town. The teenage son of an Episcopal minister was opening two shows for touring Marie Osmond.

I asked him if the poster was framed.

"It will be after she signs it," he said. That's because Burton and Osmond now share the main showroom at the Flamingo Las Vegas.

"We've gone full circle," he said.

Donny and Marie Osmond opened a six-month engagement this week at the Flamingo. Burton headlines the 4 p.m. show.

"I opened for her 20-some years ago, and now we're on the same stage," said Burton, who signed with the Flamingo last April, his first major headlining gig in Las Vegas.

His road to the entertainment capital of the world took him from library gigs to Europe, South America and Japan, before he arrived in Las Vegas in 1999.

He started here as an act in "Showgirls of Magic" at the San Remo, now the Hooters Hotel. From there, he moved to the V show at The Venetian's C2K nightclub before joining David Saxe's V Theatre at the Aladdin, as an act. About two years ago, he started his own show at V Theatre before jumping to the Flamingo.

"By far the biggest thing ever," he said, "was 'America's Got Talent.' "

He didn't win the NBC show's first season, but the exposure was worth a million to Burton.

SHOW REVIEW: 'Jeff McBride: Magic at the Edge' and 'Scarlett — Princess of Magic'

Tricks of the Trade: Magicians rely on some old standards, though one with a little more flair.

By MIKE WEATHERFORD/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Criss Angel is one busy guy, what with a multimillion-dollar show at Luxor just around the corner.

But he wasn't too busy to scoot over to the retail mall at Planet Hollywood a few weeks ago and check out "Scarlett — Princess of Magic," a bottom-rung entry on the Las Vegas entertainment ladder at the V Theater.

I believe this tells us two things. First, that magicians, like other very specific professions, are at once a supportive and jealous breed. Second, most of the male ones were nerds when they were young, and the thought of any female practitioner in fishnets still drives them wild.

And maybe it's not just magicians. Those who remember the lovely but limited Melinda, "The First Lady of Magic," know the fascination can spill over to the larger public. That's why the newly minted Scarlett stands as good a chance of selling tickets as slick veteran Jeff McBride does at Palace Station, even if their two shows are as far apart on the magic spectrum as a fifth-grader and a doctoral candidate.

The Atlantic bottlenose dolphin was the eighth dolphin to be born at the habitat.

The unnamed calf was born after a two-hour labor. It has been thriving since birth, habitat officials said.

The calf, as well as the habitat's other dolphins, are on display for public viewing.

NORM: Strip club deal was oh so close.
From: The Las Vegas Review Journal

The question has been heating up for more than a decade: Will strip clubs eventually end up inside Las Vegas gaming palaces?

Executives for the Houston-based adult entertainment giant Rick's Cabaret, the new owners of Scores, swear they had a deal in 2000, with a 2001 opening at Caesars Palace.

Arthur M. Goldberg, who turned Park Place Entertainment into a casino empire, was the force behind making it happen, said Eric Langan, president and chief executive officer of Rick's Cabaret International, Inc., the largest publicly traded gentlemen's club operator in the world.

"It was going to be a joint venture on the 19th floor in the old health club and spa," said Langan during an interview Wednesday. "We even had a private entrance."

As we spoke, Langan's longtime marketing executive, John Gray, made a call to headquarters in Houston to get the date on the letter of approval from Caesars Palace's front office.

"It was dated Aug. 31, 2000," said Gray, who was involved in the negotiations.

Goldberg died Oct. 19, 2000, at age 58 from complications from bone marrow failure.

At that time, Goldberg headed Park Place, which operated more than two dozen casinos, including Caesars Palace, Bally's, Paris Las Vegas and the Las Vegas Hilton.

"After Arthur's death, Park Place nixed it," Langan said.

"We estimated we would have generated $36 million in sales the first year just from Park Place-referred customers," Langan added.

Eight years after the near-miss, Scores is the first foray into the Las Vegas market for Rick's Cabaret, which closed its deal with DI Food & Beverage last week. Rick's took over Scores on Friday.

Under terms of the agreement, Scores managing partner Dennis DeGori, who ran Club Paradise for years, cannot be part of a strip club within a 25-mile radius of Las Vegas for two years.

The biggest issue that's keeping strip clubs out of local casinos, Langan said, is the lap dance. "They don't mind topless," he said. The concern is having resorts associated with the "perception of prostitution," he said.

LENNY'S LAS VEGAS: Looking for the perfect body.
Excalibur unveils automated poker room; auditions for scary people.

By LENNY BUTCHER/LAS VEGAS REVIEW JOURNAL

If you love your body, or anyone else’s, this might be the event that will appeal to you most. It’s Olympia Weekend at The Orleans, Sept. 25 -28. Mr. Olympia is a bodybuilding competition held annually by the International Federation of BodyBuilders and winning this event is considered to be the highest accolade in the professional bodybuilding field.

Fitness enthusiasts from around the world will take part in Mr. Olympia, Ms. Olympia, and Fitness and Figure Olympia Championships. The parallel contest, Ms. Olympia, is specifically for female bodybuilders. In addition, Fitness Olympia and Figure Olympia are held for fitness and figure competitors, respectively. This year, Las Vegan Jay Cutler is competing to defend his Mr. Olympia title for the third consecutive year.

Ticket prices range from $54.50 to $212.50 and can be purchased at www.orleansarena.com or by calling The Orleans Arena Box Office at 702-284-7777.

Talk about taking the fun out of everything. The Excalibur has become the first Strip resort to fully automate its poker room, installing 12 electronic tables. Progress can be great, but it’s always at the expense of humans. In this case, some 40 dealer positions were eliminated but the room still employs a staff of 20 cashiers and poker hosts who have been trained on the system.

The MGM Mirage-owned resort is offering free-roll tournaments every morning and low-limit cash games to build interest in the refurbished poker room. Excalibur officials said revenues from poker had been falling and interest in the game was waning. As well, installing the electronic tables was a way to make live poker less intimidating to the resort's middle-market customer base.

Here’s how it works. Players sign in using an MGM Mirage Players Club Card, which makes the games cashless. The tables, which can be set for low-limit Texas hold 'em, Omaha and seven-card stud, keep track of statistics and other game data. The tables are electronic but poker players compete against other poker players in a live game. The tables have a feel that combines video poker with Internet poker in a poker-room setting.

The tables have individual touch screens for each player and a 40-inch flat screen in the middle to display community cards, players' table stakes and the pot. The individual screens show players their hole cards. Like live poker, the casino does not know the hole cards nor does the player have to show them after folding. The electronic machines keep a record of the action that could be used to settle disputes about collusion or other allegations.

DOUG ELFMAN: HouseSeats.com has good deals.
Source: Las Vegas Review Journal

One of the more promising ways to get cheap tickets in our increasingly expensive city is through a Web site called HouseSeats.com. This week, the site offered not just "free" tickets to see Brian Wilson at Buffalo Bill's, but a free hotel room too.

Tickets aren't actually free, but they're close enough. You pay $39 for the first two months trial, for which you get two free tickets to as many events as you sign up for; $89 for a year to get two tickets to shows; or $169 a year for four tickets to events.

A friend who uses HouseSeats never sees "free" tickets for Cirque du Soleil or Cher, since those shows don't need seats filled. But if you look at what's available at HouseSeats, you might assume which shows are doing, uh, less business than Cher.

My friend says he's picked up HouseSeats tickets recently to see Blue Man Group, Penn & Teller, Sarah Silverman, Kansas and Peter Frampton.

Last week's freebies included Blue Man Group, Barry Manilow, Billy Bob Thornton and The Boxmasters, Vicki Lawrence, Bobby Slayton and "Showtime ShoBox" boxing.

This week, HouseSeats is giving away tickets for "Scarlett — Princess of Magic," "Marriage Can Be Murder," "Country Superstars Tribute" and "Superstar Voices in Concert — Larry Jones."

CIRQUE DU O.J. By Norm Clarke
Source: Las Vegas Review Journal

Two of the most famous courtroom reporters of their time are covering what might rank as the biggest trial in Las Vegas history.

Vanity Fair's Dominick Dunne is in failing health but plans to be on hand to chronicle O.J. Simpson's most serious brush with the law since his 1995 trial, when he was accused of killing his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman.

Simpson's trial on charges of armed robbery and kidnapping begins today at the Regional Justice Center.

Joining Dunne, who turns 83 next month, will be Linda Deutsch, special correspondent for The Associated Press and the news agency's lead courtroom reporter since she covered Charles Manson's trial in 1970 in Los Angeles.

Deutsch, who covered Simpson's eight-month trial in 1995, has booked a suite on the Strip for six weeks.

Dunne was famously on the receiving end of a Frank Sinatra "hit" in the mid-1960s. While dining at The Daisy, an upscale Los Angeles restaurant favored by celebrities, Dunne was tapped on the shoulder by the restaurant's captain.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Dunne," apologized the man, "but Mr. Sinatra made me do this." With that, Dunne was punched in the face. Sinatra, who was seated nearby with his daughters Tina and Nancy and fiancée Mia Farrow, had paid the captain $50 to send Dunne a message.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: 'Shear Madness' banking on locals.

The producers of "Shear Madness" might be living up to their show title by challenging the very definition of Las Vegas entertainment.

Namely, they are opening a commercial production somewhere besides a casino.

Is that a collective shrug I sense from my pals and gals out there? Let it sink in. "Shear Madness," an interactive murder-mystery comedy, is not community theater. It's not a university-affiliated fine arts program. And it's not going into a locals casino. It's not even bound for a quasi-casino space, such as a shopping mall attached to one.

No, "Shear Madness" is building out its own 300-seat venue at the Town Square shopping center on Las Vegas Boulevard. As the newest beacon in a city that's all about what's new, the center lives up to its name. Compare the throngs of young, attractive people packing its bars to the casino floor of the Sahara — one of the producers' other options — and you begin to understand why Town Square looked like a stronger choice.

Slot Faves Disappearing by Rick Garman

There seems to be a battle brewing between some major casinos and the big-time slot machine manufacturers over some of the most recognizable one-armed bandits on the casino floor. Both Paris and Bally’s have removed the “Wheel of Fortune” progressive jackpot machines, with Harrah’s company spokespeople saying they aren’t as popular as they used to be, which seems strange to me since they are almost always full with players whenever I’m in pretty much any casino anywhere.

Instead it may be about – what else? – money. Many slots like “Wheel of Fortune” and “Megabucks” that feature statewide progressive jackpots are not owned by the casino like virtually every other machine in the room. Instead they are owned by the slot manufacturer who has to pay out the big jackpots when they hit. The casinos get a cut of the revenue but not the whole ball of wax.

Expect that this is just the opening salvo in a battle that will probably see some of those revenue sharing deals renegotiated.

10th Anniversary Special:Top 10 Places to Play. By Rick Garman

Vegas4Visitors.com celebrates its 10th Anniversary in September 2008! I’ve been writing about Las Vegas for more than ten years now but I was visiting the city long before that. Over the years I have spent more than my fair share of time in the casinos, usually in front of one slot machine or another. I’m not much of a table games player unless it’s Three Card Poker, preferring instead for the mindless diversion and instant rush winnings of the one-armed bandits for my gambling fun.

People ask me where I like to gamble and in general my response is “anywhere that I win.” So I thought it would be fun to look at the places and machines around Las Vegas where I’ve done the best. Not all of them are there anymore and they aren’t always rewarding, but for me these are my Top 10 Places to Play.

1. Green Valley Ranch, $1 slots near the buffet. Over the years since it has opened I have done better on these machines as a group than any other in town. They are all tied to their own set of progressive jackpots that can pay off as much as $5,000 on any spin and often pay random $25 bonuses even if you haven’t hit a winning combination on your machine.

2. Planet Hollywood, $5 slots near the escalators to the nightclub. Planet Hollywood hasn’t been around for very long but I have won more money at that casino in shorter period of time than any other, most of it on the very generous $5 slots.

3. Harrah’s, $1 slots near Penazzi restaurant. The small collection of Blazing 7 machines hits remarkably consistently. It’s often tough to find one that doesn’t have someone using it, but when you do it can be worth the investment.

4. Flamingo, $1 slots near the lobby. There are fewer of the Blazing 7 machines in this area than there used to be and they haven’t been as generous the last few times I’ve been there, but for a long time this area was one of the best places to gamble in Las Vegas.

5. Red Rock Resort, $1 machines near the food court. Like those at Green Valley, these machines are also tied to random progressive jackpots but these are shared across multiple casinos. Still, I usually do very well here.

6. Green Valley Ranch, 25 cent video poker, multiple locations. There are lots of video poker machines around this casino but look for the double-double bonus poker progressives – those are the ones that I usually do well on.

7. Las Vegas Hilton, $1 slots in the space theme casino. My days of winning here are long gone but I have very vivid memories of walking entire armloads full of coin buckets to the cashier from the machines that were located in the far back corner of this casino.

8. Stratosphere, $1 and $5 slots to the right of the main entrance. For a long time there was a group of machines along the walkway between the main casino and the north casino that I did really well on.

9. Golden Nugget, $1 machines near the Spa Tower elevators. They’ve recently redone this area but for years the machines here – a mix of standard themed and variations on the Blazing 7 – were tremendously rewarding.

10. Bally’s, $1 machines in the center of the casino. Incredibly loose slots made Bally’s a favorite of mine for a very long time.

10th Anniversary Special:Top 10 Hotel Closures of the Last Decade. By Rick Garman

Vegas4Visitors.com celebrates its 10th Anniversary in September 2008! Over the last decade, Las Vegas has seen a bunch of classic hotels fade into the history books. I thought it would be fun to look back at the places that no longer grace (or disgrace as the case may be) the skyline.

1. Desert Inn – Just after its 50th birthday, Steve Wynn closed one of the Grand Dames of the Las Vegas Strip, a place that had helped define the city as an oasis of fun in the sun. When it opened in 1950, it had the tallest building in Nevada at just over 3 stories high. It was the home of Dan Tanna for “Vega$” and remained in good condition until the end. Wynn Las Vegas and the upcoming Encore now take up the land where the DI once stood.

2. Stardust – Opened in 1958, the Stardust was the last to open of the original “classic” Vegas hotels that included names like Dunes, Flamingo, Sahara, El Rancho, and more. Although it went through a series of declines in its later years, it was still popular for budget minded gamblers. It is being replaced by Echelon.

3. Binion’s Horseshoe – Yes, Binion’s is still around but the original zeitgeist of Benny Binion’s Horseshoe disappeared a few years ago when the hotel went bankrupt, closed, and was reopened with new management who just wanted the Horseshoe name.

4. Westward Ho – One of the first motels on The Strip, the Westward Ho was mostly famous for its low-rent rooms and 99 cent hot dogs. It was torn down to make way for a hotel than never happened and it now just an empty lot.

5. New Frontier – The second hotel on The Strip, in business since 1946, finally closed last year as a rundown shadow of its former glory. The land will be the home for an homage to New York’s famed Plaza hotel.

6. Showboat/Castaways – The hotel opened on the far east edges of Downtown Las Vegas in the 1950s as The Showboat, complete with a riverboat façade. It was remodeled and rebranded as The Castaways in 2000 and then went bankrupt and closed in 2004. It was torn down in 2005 and is an empty lot now. Trivia – the hotel’s main claim to fame for a long time was that it had the biggest bowling alley in the world.

7. The Aladdin (original) – The site of Elvis and Priscilla’s wedding doesn’t really fit on this list since it was imploded in early 1998 but I’m still counting it.

8. The New Aladdin – Just a couple of years after they rebuilt the Aladdin bigger, better, and much more expensive it went down in what was the biggest bankruptcy in Nevada history. The hotel was remodeled and rebranded as Planet Hollywood.

9. Boardwalk Holiday Inn – It opened in the 1970s under a different name but it was really its era in the late 1990s as the Boardwalk, complete with its Coney Island themed façade, that the hotel is most known for. It was torn down in 2006 to make way for CityCenter.

10. The Maxim – If you don’t remember The Maxim, you’re probably lucky. Located just east of The Strip on Flamingo, it had become one of the cruddiest hotels in town by the time they shut it down, gutted it, and turned it into the very fine Westin.

No. 1 celebration.
Latin stars converge on Vegas for event bigger than Cinco de Mayo.

By: Joe Brown/Las Vegas Sun

If ever there were a time to shout “Viva Las Vegas!” this would be the weekend for it.

Here in Las Vegas (which means, of course, “the meadows” en espanol), Mexican Independence Day is mas grande than Cinco de Mayo. Mexicans celebrate their 1810 independence from Spain — Grito de Dolores — every Sept. 16. And thousands of Mexican visitors head north for Vegas (which was, of course, once on the northern frontier of Mexico) for a big weekendlong celebration with most of the biggest names in Latin music — Luis Miguel, Enrique Iglesias, Marco Antonio Solis, Alejandro Fernandez and Jaguares, for starters — at nearly every marquee room in town. It’s practically a Mexican Woodstock.

It wasn’t always this way.

The Mirage Reignites Las Vegas Strip with Dramatic Transformation of Iconic Volcano

The Mirage today announced details of a dynamic redesign to its signature Volcano.  Known the world over for its iconic Strip-front feature, The Mirage has joined forces with legendary Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart, Indian tabla sensation Zakir Hussain and Fountains of Bellagio design firm WET, to create an all-new audio/visual spectacle.  The top-to-bottom overhaul is the final step in the property’s ongoing transformation and is scheduled for completion late 2008.

The Mirage set a new standard for innovative Strip-front attractions when The Volcano first erupted in 1989.  Raising the bar once again, The Mirage has enlisted the Grammy Award-winning talents of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame musician Mickey Hart and Indian musical virtuoso Zakir Hussain to create and perform a one-of-a-kind soundtrack arranged exclusively for the iconic blast.

“To put percussive sound to the image of fire and have it dance around a lagoon is something I’ve never done; I’ve never birthed a volcano,” said Hart.  “Zakir and I immersed ourselves in the legends and myths and studied what really makes a volcano work.  The result, a true union of the senses, will rattle your bones, just like a real volcano.”

Tasked with bringing the latest innovations to the project, WET will forge a primal volcanic environment of sound, light, music and heat.  WET’s choreographed FireShootersä – which send massive fireballs more than 12 feet into the air – were designed specifically for The Mirage using the latest developments in flame-expression technology.  The FireShootersä will punctuate the performances with eruptions of fiery “lava” that will flow down the mountain’s fissures in a series of lively flames.  As the eruption ignites the surrounding lagoon, the FireShootersä will bring Las Vegas’ signature blast within feet of spectators.

Further enhancing the overall experience, The Volcano will feature a new Meyer Sound state-of-the-art sound system.  An award-winning industry innovator, Meyer Sound is widely recognized for providing the gold standard in audio systems, as heard in theaters throughout the world, including The Mirage’s own LOVE Theater.  With more than 60 Meyer Sound cabinets strategically placed throughout the lagoon, Hart and Hussain’s invigorating composition will immerse guests in the volcanic rhythm.

The new Volcano is the crowning jewel of a transformation project that began at the property in 2006.  During the past three years, The Mirage has introduced new amenities including The Beatles’ LOVE™ by Cirque du Soleil, nightlife outposts JET Nightclub and The Beatles Revolution Lounge; the luxury adult pool BARE, and restaurants created by the world’s most acclaimed restaurateurs and designers.

A recent $110 million room and suite redesign has further enhanced The Mirage’s leading-edge position.  Striking new decor and dynamic designs offer guests a comfortable home away from home.  From luxury amenities to modern furnishings, the resort’s 2,765 Deluxe and Tower Deluxe accommodations reflect an ambiance of contemporary upscale living, perfectly complementing the energy and excitement of the new Mirage.

“The Mirage and our fiery Volcano have long been symbols of the energy and excitement Las Vegas offers,” said Scott Sibella, President and COO of The Mirage.  “We recognize that to remain at the forefront of this dynamic destination, The Mirage must deliver trendsetting attractions that excite and entertain, giving our guests a reason to visit again and again.”

To discover more about the Volcano, see images and learn about the work in progress, and view interviews with the creators behind the magic, go to mirage.com.  There, visitors also may enter The Mirage Volcano Memories Contest and win a trip to The Mirage to see the new Volcano erupt later this year.

COOL FACTOR: HAS LAS VEGAS JUMPED THE SHARK?
Strip strives to keep crowds coming by constantly reinventing itself.

By SONYA PADGETT/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

There comes a moment in nearly every popular television show's history when, like a pandering politician, it will do anything just to get people to like it.

That's when the show surpasses the entertaining threshold and enters into the realm of ridiculousness, bringing in cute kids, fluffy animals, outrageous stunts, even aliens from outer space, all in an effort to retain its popularity. At that point, a show is said to have "jumped the shark." (The term refers to a 1970s episode of "Happy Days" in which the character Fonzie — in leather jacket and water skis — does just that.)

But what is it called when a city does the same thing? When it goes so far that it becomes a parody of itself, mixing a pastiche of attractions into a pot, hoping to cook up a popularity stew that everyone wants to taste?

That's called Las Vegas. And, according to trend watchers, Sin City is "jumping the shark" right now. But that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Chuck Rounds' Las Vegas Entertainment News
September 2008

The happy and sad times of September are upon us…parents are happy that the kids are back in school, while the kids are sad that school is back in session.  Businesses are happy that the convention season is about to begin, but businesses have been very sad because of the beating they have taken because of the economy.  I think that most of American is happy about the pending election, but also very sad that official campaigning has begun, and we'll have to endure the next couple of months of campaign ads.

The economy has hurt us all.  Tourism and gaming are down in Las Vegas…people don't want to pay for the gas that it will take to get across the desert.  The foreclosure rate of homes in the city has been staggering.  The budget cuts in the schools have been unconscionable—parents are being asked to pitch in and buy the supplies for all of the classrooms…it seems that even paper and pencils have been eliminated from the state budget.

The economy has taken its toll on the shows in town as well.  Over the summer, there have been about a dozen strong shows that have closed… "Spamalot," "Hats," "Toxic Audio," "Second City," Gordie Brown, Ronn Lucas, Rosanne Barr, "Ooh La La," and even "The World's Greatest Magic Show," just to name a few.  There have been a bunch of smaller shows as well…some that opened and closed so quickly that they never even merited a mention.

Of all of the shows that are going away, I think that I'll miss "The World's Greatest Magic" the most.  It was a great show in an unfortunate location, and in spite of tremendous ticket offers, was never able to draw the crowds that it needed.  It made a tremendous run at it, but when the going got tough, people decided not to venture over to the Greek Isles…it is a shame.

The only positive note on all of this is that more shows are offering discount tickets and half price tickets than ever before…It is a great time to get a good bargain on show tickets.

There are a couple of shows that will be opening in the near future that will hopefully spark a lot of interest…Donny and Marie Osmond will be the newest headliners in the Flamingo Showroom.  Beginning Sept. 9, the duo will delight audiences of all ages with their iconic style of entertainment, the 90-minute extravaganza will highlight Donny & Marie's greatest hits in a multimedia spectacle presented on a custom designed stage with multiple video screens and a large cast of dancers. This will mark the first time in 29 years that they will have performed an extended residency engagement in Las Vegas.

The Cirque du Soleil production of  "Believe," starring Criss Angel will open at the Luxor in October…tickets have now officially gone on sale, and the show promises to in fact be…unbelievable.

The trends of fall in Las Vegas are very much the same as elsewhere in the country—it's time to get back to work, summer break is over.  The pools and pool parties are starting to close, and the big business of conventions is on the horizon for our city.  We finally get a break from the summer heat and fall (which is one of the best times of the year,) is upon us.

The NFL is getting started—which means that sports books across the city will be happy, and thousands of wives will be seeing shows, as thousands of husbands are watching and betting on the games.

Olympia Weekend…the most prestigious event in the world of bodybuilding, returns to the Orleans Arena, September 25 through 28, 2008.  Mr. Olympia is a bodybuilding competition held annually by the International Federation of BodyBuilders (IFBB). Winning this event is considered to be the highest accolade in the professional bodybuilding field.  Fitness enthusiasts from around the world will take part in Mr. Olympia, Ms. Olympia, and Fitness and Figure Olympia Championships.

In keeping with the storied tradition of the Binion's legacy, Binion's Gambling Hall & Hotel has unveiled a new version of the famed $1 Million Display that, over the last five decades, has brought millions of visitors for a chance to pose with $1 million.  Binion's new $1 Million Display holds exactly one million dollars and is structured in a pyramid design of acrylic glass boxes filled with cash denominations ranging from ones to one hundred dollar bills.  The new display is only one of many changes taking place at Binion's during the remodeling and refurbishment of the property. The $1 Million Display is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Photo subjects must be 21 or older…(which is a shame…I got my picture with the million dollar display when I was 12.)

"V-The Ultimate Variety Show" is celebrating its sixth year in production.  "V" originated at the Venetian in 2002 and moved to the V Theater in 2003 when producer David Saxe bought the theater in the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino.

August 16th was the 31st anniversary of the death of Elvis Aaron Presley.  Still very much alive in Las Vegas, homage was paid to him by of fans at the statue of him in the lobby of the Las Vegas Hilton.

One of the best family events of the year is the 29th Annual San Gennaro Feast, they promise to be bigger than ever with more Italian entertainment, food, music and carnival rides. This huge Italian Festival is expecting over 150,000 attendees. The Feast will be held at 4245 Grand Canyon Drive and West Flamingo Rd., in the Grand Canyon Shopping Center, Sept. 9 through Sunday Sept. 14.  The State Fair-sized carnival featuring more than 60 spectacular rides and game-midway will accompany the Italian Festival the biggest we ever had.

…and right after the Italian festival is the Greek Festival.

The Magical Forest at Opportunity Village is now looking for volunteers.  It takes 70 – 90 volunteers a night to run the event, and it is one of the great celebrations in our city.  To get involved contact Debbie Smith at 702-880-4081 or write her at: smithd@opportunityvillage.org

That Players Can’t Get at a Traditional Poker Room
A private bar, bottle service, certified masseuses, music, plush couches, and video poker machines…sounds more like a nightclub than a traditional poker room. The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino has created a decadent atmosphere designed with the player’s comfort in mind to attract the world’s top poker players, as well as high-end bachelor parties, and private events, with Las Vegas’ first Poker Lounge.

The new 7,000-square foot, first of its kind, Poker Lounge is a full service poker room, with an inviting, lounge feel and the newest addition in the property’s $800 million expansion and renovation. The $30 million designed space features 18 poker tables including five private, high limit tables that have already turned the heads of some biggest names in the poker world, as well as Hollywood and professional athletes.

The trendsetting Poker Lounge will unveil a number of “firsts” when it celebrates its grand opening later this month including a full bar inside the venue and bottle service available for all poker players. Also exclusive to the Hard Rock Poker Lounge will be:

Full menu of food options for players available 24-hours a day

Certified Rock Spa masseuses available to players

All-female VIP host staff educated in poker and always on-call

High-limit slot and video poker machines inside the Lounge

Private rooms with large-screen televisions and private iPod docs for personalized music or movies available for bachelor parties, private events and tournaments

In line with the party and player-oriented themes, men’s and women’s bathrooms inside the Lounge

Special Poker Lounge comps including concert tickets and backstage passes for exclusive performances at The Joint, Hard Rock’s concert venue, as well as poolside cabanas for Hard Rock’s signature Sunday daylife pool-party, Rehab.

Utilizing the most up-to-date technology, the Hard Rock Poker Lounge will feature the Genesis Reservation System, a completely automated reservation system that will text message players anywhere on property when their name is called. The Genesis system is the ultimate in high-end service and is not offered at any other poker room in Las Vegas.

“We have brought in world-renown poker managers, dealers and players in the industry including Houston Waldie, Steve Cyr, Jimmy Miller, Steven Braverman and Blaine Goodwin to kick off the only Poker Lounge in the city,” said Steve Cyr, Hard Rock’s Poker Lounge marketing manager. “Hard Rock likes to push the envelope when it comes to entertainment, so the Lounge will be no different.”

The overarching theme of the Hard Rock Poker Lounge will be to offer any game, any limit, at any time however, the lounge will also feature limit and no-limit hold’em cash games on an ongoing basis. The game stakes offered will include $2-$4, $4-$8 and $8-$16 limit hold’em with a kill or no kill, and no-limit hold’em with $1-$2 blinds ($200 minimum-no cap buy-in), $5-$10 blinds ($500 minimum-no cap buy-in), and $25-$50 blinds ($2,500 minimum-no cap buy-in). Feast Buffet is one of Southern Nevada’s most popular buffets and a signature staple throughout many Station Casinos’ properties that features a variety of live cooking stations of the freshest prepared food in a buffet environment. Camacho’s Cantina will bring one of Southern California’s popular family-owned and operated casual Mexican restaurants to North Las Vegas for its Nevada debut.  The Camacho family, with roots in Sonora, Mexico, will offer traditional favorites such as fresh guacamole prepared tableside, fajitas, carnitas, mole, carne asada tacos, enchiladas, mariscos (Mexican seafood) and a variety of soups and salads.  No Mexican restaurant is complete without a little tequila and Camacho’s will rise to the occasion with over 100 different premium tequilas.  The Camacho’s family of Mexican restaurants in Southern California includes Camacho’s Cantina at Universal City Walk Hollywood, Mariasol Restaurant at the World Famous Santa Monica Pier, El Paseo Inn Restaurant at Historic Olvera Street, and Camacho’s Cantina & Grill in L.A.  Camacho’s has additional locations inside sports and entertainment venues such as the Staples Center, Dodger Stadium, the Home Depot Center, and the Pepsi Center, as well as airport locations at Los Angeles International and Ontario International.  Camacho’s will be open for dinner nightly Monday through Friday, and lunch and dinner on weekends.

Part of T.G.I. Friday’s appeal is its restaurant décor that celebrates the modern classic icons of the 1970’s and 80’s such as disco balls, Harley Davidson gear, snowboards, MTV’s Moon Man (or for Boomers looking at the same statue – a likeness of the first man walking on the moon). The Aliante Station location is owned and operated by the Briad Restaurant Group, LLC, the licensed franchisee that operates T.G.I. Friday’s restaurants in eight states. T.G.I. Friday’s will be open daily for lunch, dinner and late night dining.

"Montilicious" from The Vegas Eye

Once again you have to hand it to Jerry Lewis who always seems to rise to the occasion when it comes to the Labor Day Telethon for MDA. The goal for this year was one dollar more than last year's sixty-five million dollars. Seeing the old clips of a young Jerry Lewis with the likes of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin brings back memories for all of us. It was great too seeing my old friend Ed McMahon. Ed remembers me as the young and handsome character who was willing to appear on the Tonight Show with he and Johnny Carson at the drop of a hat. Yes, every time a scheduled appearance fell through, the Tonight Show car would pick up yours truly for a fast trip to the studio.

The South Point Hotel and Casino deserves our accolades for being so gracious to all the entertainers and the audiences for this year's Telethon. This was the third year for South Point to host the Labor Day Telethon and I suspect they're probably in line to continue the good work.

You can add Ooh La La at the Paris to the list of closings along with Ron Lucas at the Excalibur.and The World's Great Magic Show at The Greek Isles. They_even tried giving away tickets but there were no takers. According to Concerts West the biggest ticket seller for shows continues to be the one and only Cher at Caesers Colosseum. It's now official,. The Palazzo will turn the 40-40 Club into a sports book.

Over at The Flamingo, , Donny and Marie Osmond tickets have been selling fast and furious. –they open Tues Sept 9 And don't forget to check out Vinny Favorito also at the Flamingo. He's fast becoming the talk of the Strip for his comedy routines. By the way, Donny and Marie will be competing with the Osmond Brothers, who also will be performing locally later this month. There are enough Osmonds to become a sort of family "Cirque du Soleil". Osmonds all over the place!

Glen Alai , the man behind Penn and Teller at the Rio, tells me their numbers are great while Jubilee at Bally's (???) is offering tickets for $27 to entice locals. Listen people, don't pass up this offer. This really is a must see show.

Wes Winters, who's currently at the Steve Wyrick Theater at Miracle Mile in Planet Hollywood, took some time off to see his idol, Barry Manilow. Barry has been headlining at the Hilton and was very gracious to our Wes backstage after the show/. Steve Wyrick has a 1000 performance event on Fri Sept 12 along with a presentation if a custom SW1000 Chopper "bike"

Some of the casinos, including the Excalibur, are trying the latest gadget, which is electronic poker. The electronic poker machines eliminate the dealers which makes us ask, "Where are we headed?" The thought of no dealers changes the whole atmosphere, doesn't it?

With Donny and Marie Osmond covering the entire face of the Flamingo on Las Vegas Boulevard the time draws near for their debut.  Even though Toni Braxton made a hasty exit from the Flamingo due to health issues, it seems she's made a full recovery.  Don Marrandino, President of the Flamingo, has been very gracious about Toni Braxton and her scheduled appearance on Dancing With The Stars.   "You gotta have heart"Recently I was on thephone with Johnny Thompson, who seems to.many to be the master magician of the world.  Johnny has been a mentor to Las Vegas star Lance Burton and Criss Angel who is scheduled to debut his new show sometime in September.  Johnny was called to the Luxor in order to fine tune the bird act set for the latest Cirque show, Believe,  with Criss Angel.  It must have been a serious talk with those birds because there's been no change in the expected opening.

Among this weeks openings were The Eastside Cannery, which boasts a "tableside buffet", a very novel approach. A ballroom, sports book, bingo hall, are among some of the other features. Rok at New York-New York offers rocckand roll, hip hop, anjd top[ 40's for the different types of people coming stos this property.

Beginng Sept 21, The Fiesta  (W. Lake Mead)  will be featuring the best in salsa dancing on Sundays from 5:00pm-!0.00pm. The big Michito Sanchez band will be heating up the room as they do on Thursdays at The  South Point.

On the reality television rundown American Idol has added a fourth judge.  No, Paula Abdul is not out.  America Has Talent is a big snore except for Jerry Springer and Sharon Osborne.  Pamela Anderson should get off television altogether.  It was just announced that Donald Trump's latest version of Apprentice will feature Joe Francis who was recently busted for his part in Girls Gone Wild.  Donald Trump, sometimes down but never out.  He goes on and on and on.

Recently I caught a new arrival to the Flamingo, Vinnie Favorito.  Funny, funny, funny.  Vinnie's act is effortless and easy. as  he makes his audience the show.  Earlier he was appearing at O'Shea's downtown and originally started his Las Vegas outing at Binion's Horseshoe.  Vinnie is a prize,  performing for a full house and sold out shows seven nights a week.  This is one of those not to be missed shows and the guy is really  funny, or did I say that already?

On the same night I caught the 10:00 PM George Wallace show, "I Been Think'n" with guest star Jennifer Holiday.  George, another really funny man. always keeps his shows fresh and up to date,  and Jennifer, in great voice and looked beautiful.  The sound of her voice brought back memories of her Broadway appearance some twenty-seven years ago in Dream Girls where I first saw her.  Jennifer's performance can only be enhanced with live music.  Wish she would consider that for her next appearance here.

The Flamingo Las Vegas offered up a great evening with dinner and entertainment that sent my party home exhausted from laughter but warm hearted with music.
