McCarran sees largest traffic decline since 2002.
By Benjamin Spillman/Las Vegas Review Journal

Traffic at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas fell 8.6 percent in July to about 3.9 million arrivals and departures.

The decline reflects an ongoing trend in Las Vegas tourism due to a rocky national economy and high oil prices that make it more difficult to travel.

The latest dip at McCarran, which is the largest since February 2002, marks the ninth consecutive month of declining airline visits, including a slight increase in February due to an extra day thanks to leap year.

Among the top five airlines serving Las Vegas, only American posted an increase. It took nearly 185,000 people to and from Southern Nevada during the month, a 3.6 percent increase.

Comic takes raunchy act to bigger digs at the Flamingo.
Favorito is up for insulting you seven nights a week.
By: Jerry Fink/Las Vegas Sun

Insult comic Vinnie Favorito moved from the tiny O’Sheas a few weeks ago and is packing the 200-seat showroom at the Flamingo, renamed Bugsy’s Cabaret after Second City closed up shop.

“They have unleashed me,” Favorito says.

As if anyone ever had a leash on the Boston-born comic famous for taking no prisoners in his war against political correctness.

“I was going to say on my new sign ‘Comedy that walks the line,’ which is what George Carlin use to say to me,” Favorito says. “But (Flamingo President) Don Marrandino said no, it’s got to be edgier, racier. So I put on the sign, ‘Vinnie Favorito, completely f’n’ crazy.’ ”

Favorito performs at 8 p.m. seven nights a week, sharing the showroom with the topless “X, Burlesque,” which starts at 10 p.m.

Steve's Las Vegas Quickies

Comedy legend Jerry Lewis is sharing more details about his being detained at McCarran International Airport July 25, after a security guard found a .22-caliber gun in his luggage. It was a gift given to him at last year's Muscular Dystrophy telethon at South Point, he told Entertainment Tonight. Lewis said he hadn't traveled since receiving the gun. He was cited by the Metropolitan Police Department for having a working firearm.

The Scintas, who have been headliners in Las Vegas since 2000, are shooting a sitcom pilot around town.

Legendary baritone Robert Goulet will be posthumously inducted into the Nevada/Artist Hall of Fame on Sept. 18 at UNLV's Artemus Ham Concert Hall. Other honorees will be entertainer Clint Holmes, architect-developer Tony Marnell, Nevada Dance Theatre co-founder Vassili Sulich and the rock group The Killers. Goulet, a Grammy, Tony and Emmy award winner as well as a Las Vegas headliner, died in October of pulmonary fibrosis.

Primm Valley Casino Resorts is offering 500 free tickets to every concert until the end of the year. To sign up and for the concert sked, visit www.primmconcerts.com.

"Magic at the Edge." starring Jeff McBride opens tonight  at Palace Station.

McBride has a three-month contract with options to extend, though Station Casinos' long-term plans for the space may result in the demise of the lounge.

A decade-old ban on the use of cell phones and other electronic devices inside Nevada sports books was lifted for one year on Thursday by the state Gaming Commission.

Commission Chairman Pete Bernhard said in supporting the move that regulators realized there's a lot of "purely innocent use of cell phones in casinos" and that casino patrons using the phones often don't understand why they're told to stop.

Andre's at the Monte Carlo has closed for renovation. The original Andre's French Restaurant, 401 S. Sixth St., has reopened after its annual vacation.

For Las Vegas residents only — the Las Vegas Hilton is giving away slot machines via a drawing on Wednesday at 5 p.m. in the Space Quest Casino. Tickets can be earned playing at the machines using your Resorts Destination Card through Tuesday.

2008 Restaurant Week
This year’s annual fundraising event will take place from Sept. 1-7 at a multitude of Las Vegas area restaurants. You pay just $25.08 per person for lunch or $50.08 per person for dinner at the finest eateries in town and a portion of the proceeds goes directly to Three Square to help end hunger. Click here or call 702/644-3663 for a complete list of participating restaurants.

While Terry Caudill is rolling out a new version of the legendary million-dollar display at Binion's Gambling Hall, there will be at least one significant difference: Having your photo taken with the million clams will no longer be 'on the house.' According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, "to get a photo with the money, a customer needs to sign up for the slot club and plunk down $20 for the souvenir and $25 in slot or table play."

Blogger Steve Friess paid a visit to Paris-Las Vegas yesterday and discovered a little-heralded innovation by Harrah's Entertainment: Automated kiosks that conjure up maps and directions for the property. "You just choose from the menu what you're looking for … and then it generates a map for you with a line suggesting your path," writes Friess, who has photo coverage of this effort to create an even more user-friendly Vegas.

The long-awaited ultra poker room at Hard Rock opened today. It's a beautiful room, with hot cocktail waitresses working the surprisingly bustling floor. The stakes ranged from 3-6 limit to low-blind no-limit when we checked this afternoon.

According to blogger John Curtas, the restaurants at Encore will include: Theo's, featuring "market-driven" Italian cuisine as interpreted by Theo Schoenegger; Switch, helmed by former Le Cirque chef Mark Poidevin; Botero Steak; a Thai sushi restaurant to be named later. Opening of Encore is currently slated for Dec. 22.

MGM Mirage
has rolled out a half-dozen new travel offers. Expiring first (Sept. 27) is a three-nights-for-the price-of-two deal at Luxor, starting at $79/night (promo code: PSTAY8). From now until Sept. 30, a two-night stay at Monte Carlo includes $20 credits for room service and the spa, plus $10 worth of slot play and a $35 suite-upgrade option (code: "Labor Day"). Also now running, until Oct. 30, is MGM Grand's "Summer Last Chance!" Book a $79/night room or higher and you'll qualify for VIP access to Tabu, a variety of suite upgrades, two free poolside drinks and a $35 "activity credit" (code: INB202).

Mandalay Bay
has three simultaneous "Endless Summer" offers going, going from $110/night to $170/night, and named "Tan," "Bronze" and "Gold," running Sept. 1-Nov. 30. All include $300 in Mandalay Place coupons. Other incentives either escalate according to the package level (such as the restaurant discounts, travel credits and cabaña rates) or only available at "Bronze" or "Gold" level. The former includes half-off Mamma Mia! tickets, plus comped Moorea Beach Club and Mix Lounge entry. "Gold" buyers get the Moorea and Mix comps, but also land free spa passes in lieu of discounted show tix. Promo codes are PFALL1, PFALL2 and PFALL3, for "Tan," "Gold," and "Bronze" respectively.

The newest topless show on the Strip has proven to be short-lived. Ooh la la, at Paris-Las Vegas, will close on Aug. 31, following its 11 p.m. performance.

With 12 days to go before it closes permanently, business appears strong over at the Las Vegas Hilton, where Star Trek: The Experience was drawing long lines for its thrill rides, museum, etc. How is the attraction holding up after 11 years? Stiffs & Georges had a look and filed this report.

The fifth season of NBC's late-late-night "Poker After Dark" will land at the Golden Nugget, the property announced today. The Nugget's poker venue, The Grand, will be the location for a 60-episode shoot. Lensing will take place Oct. 26-Nov. 5, with the resulting shows to be aired in 2009. Leeann Tweeden will host and competitors are expected to include Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu, Doyle Brunson, Howard Lederer, Chris Ferguson,  Jennifer Harman and Phil Hellmuth. "Poker After Dark" airs at 2:05 a.m., Mon.-Fri., and 1 a.m. on Saturdays.

It took until 12:25 this afternoon for the local paper to pick up on what LVA reported Aug. 12: Excalibur closed its poker room last night, preferatory to replacing live poker with automated PokerPro tables. That's the route Trump Plaza, in Atlantic City, went when introducing poker to its mix of game offerings, even though Trump Entertainment CEO Mark Juliano says of them, "They're boring. There's no interaction."

"What's the best inexpensive place in Vegas to go get rip-roaring drunk?" That's the latest "Stripper Poll" question at Vegas Happens Here. In early voting, LVA favorite Ellis Island (a hardy perennial in our "Top Ten") has taken the lead. Roseanne Barr came on strong down the stretch in the Stripper Poll for "Worst Regular Comedy Act," forcing early favorite Carrot Top to eke out a one-vote victory, with Danny Gans a distant third.

It's been reported in a few different places that Harrah's is pulling "participation slots" off its floors. A participation slot is one for which the manufacturer gets a percentage of what the machine wins. Casinos have long disliked this arrangement, but it's been necessary to keep some of the more popular slots, most notably, Wheel of Fortune. Harrah's will apparently analyze the affect on revenues to determine its future slots mix.

Sunset Station has unveiled its new race & sports book. There will be $3,200 and a trip to the Breeder's Cup up for grabs this week in drawings Aug. 22, 29, and Sept. 5.

Sugarcane has opened at the Palazzo. It's a 4,000-square-foot late-night club that's part of the restaurant SushiSamba. It's open Thursdays-Saturdays from 11 pm to 4 am; there's no cover charge.

How To Be A Casino Expert by Bill Burton

Many players visit the casino and only play slot machines. This may be fun but you are missing out on the excitement of playing the tables games. The main reason players do not try a new game is because they do not feel confident venturing onto the main casino floor. Learning the games and the casino procedures is not as hard as you might think. I have put together a series of short"How to" tutorials to help make you a casino expert.

Global Ice Age Begins as Minus 5 Brings Unique Ice Lounge Experience to Las Vegas.

A lounge in which everything is made of ice is about to become the hottest destination in the United States; and, the forecast calls for Las Vegas, known for its 100-degree heat, to become a whole lot cooler - as cold as ice.  This September, New Zealand-based Minus 5 Group begins an American ice age when it opens the first permanent ice lounge experience ever in the United States at Mandalay Place, located adjacent to Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino on the famous Las Vegas Strip.  To sneak a peak at this “cool” venue, go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y73frhcai14 . Building an ice lounge in the middle of the desert is no easy task, but with years of knowledge and expertise Minus 5, a world renowned hospitality group famous for their unparalleled ice lounge creations, the scorching Mojave Desert is the perfect location to showcase this incredible experience.  The Las Vegas location will be the first of many U.S.-based Minus 5 ice lounges, with other locations currently in the development stage in New York, Miami, Hawaii, and Los Angeles.

“We look forward to being the first full-sized ice lounge attraction of this kind in the United States.  We take pride in being one of the most visited man-made attractions in Australia and New Zealand, and look forward to recreating that experience in the U.S.,” said Craig Ling, president and founder of Minus 5.  “We are excited to introduce what is a truly unique experience to an American audience and we believe Las Vegas is the perfect city to continue our global expansion.”

The Minus 5 Ice Lounge, named for its constant frosty temperature of minus five degrees Celsius (27-degrees Fahrenheit) is currently under construction and set to open September 2008 at Mandalay Place, adjacent to Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino.  Everything inside the 1,200 sq. ft. Minus 5 Ice Lounge is made of ice, including the walls, the bar, the sculptures, the chairs, and even the glasses from which guests sip exotic vodka cocktails (non-alcoholic “mocktails” are available for guests under 21).  To ensure guest comfort in the sub-freezing environment, guests are provided with winter gear that includes sheepskin-lined parkas, gloves, and booties.

“Minus 5 celebrates the art of ice, and we continually re-invent the experience by recreating the lounge and sculptures every 6-8 weeks,” said Ling.  “We take enormous pride in the quality of our product and the uniqueness of this experience.”  So much so that the Minus 5 ice sculptures and other fixtures are carved from crystalline Canadian ice and then shipped to Las Vegas where they are re-assembled on-site at Minus 5.  The ice cocktail glasses are made from pure New Zealand spring water and are shipped in their frozen form all the way from Kiwi-country.

Admission is $30 per person and includes a premium vodka drink for guests 21 and older or a non-alcoholic drink for younger guests.  Minus 5 Ice Lounge is currently under construction and is scheduled to open in September 2008.  Reservations, group, corporate and wedding arrangements can be made by calling 702.632.7714; or lasvegas@minus5experience.com.  For more information, www.minus5experience.com.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: 'Got Talent' a good thing for 'La Cage'

Is America ready for a singing Britney?

You can't always count on the real Britney Spears for live vocals. But Derrick Barry says he's prepared to move his female impersonator act beyond lip-sync if the "America's Got Talent" judges allow him.

"If I have the chance to showcase live vocals, I think that would take it to the next level," says the "An Evening at La Cage" performer who was featured Tuesday on the NBC talent show.

Today's results show — which, like Tuesday's effort, was pretaped — will let the world know whether Barry gets cut from the competition or comes back after the Olympics as one of 40 finalists for live episodes of the talent show.

Show Stagnation by Rick Garman

When Cirque du Soleil opened Mystere at Treasure Island in 1993 it was a revolution in terms of entertainment in Las Vegas. Up until then the city’s showrooms were mainly filled with magicians, showgirls, female impersonators, and has-beens. But Cirque changed all that, ushering in a dramatic era that made everything from the Blue Man Group to “Mamma Mia!” to Celine Dion possible.

Today, Cirque is almost literally running the show with five productions in permanent residence and another two opening within the next year – the magic themed Believe at Luxor opening in September and the Elvis Presley show at CityCenter set to debut in 2009.

So as “Mamma Mia!” heads toward its closing date in January 2009, many are questioning whether another Cirque production is the right idea for Mandalay Bay, from hotel insiders to the media to, well, me.

Don’t get me wrong, Cirque shows are always eye-popping spectacles and are often artistic levels of expression that you would never expect to see in Las Vegas. But I think it’s time for something new in the Sin City show scene. We have plenty of Cirque, we don’t need another Broadway transplant, no more topless women or men, no more whirling blades of death magic, and please, please have someone tell Michael Jackson that we’re over him.

What does that leave? Well, I’m no Las Vegas show producer, but I have one idea that people who are Las Vegas show producers may feel free to steal. The idea is simple, really: television.

Co-produce a show – it doesn’t matter what kind as long as it’s entertaining. It could be a competition style reality show like “American Idol” or “Dancing with the Stars,” a talk show (Jay Leno is going to be looking for a gig next year), or a game show (“Let’s Make a Deal” used to tape at the Las Vegas Hilton and “Wheel of Fortune” still does occasionally).

But here’s the kicker: the tickets are free. The hotels and producers will make their money off of television advertising revenue and can open up a gift shop, restaurant, and nightclub all themed to the show to make more dough.

Vegas4Visitors Weekly Awards by Rick Garman

The Delay of the Week Award goes to The Plaza – not the existing one in Downtown, but the new one planned for The Strip based on the famed New York hotel of the same name. The Israeli based company behind the project announced they are delaying groundbreaking from this year to sometime in 2009, which should push the opening back to 2012 at the earliest.

The Bon Voyage Award of the Week goes to ventriloquist Ronn Lucas who is packing his bags and going on a cruise. More specifically, the entertainer is shutting down his Vegas show and will instead travel for private events including some on cruise lines.

The Brrrrr Award of the Week goes to Minus 5, the all-ice ultra-lounge that will open at Mandalay Bay in October. Everything in the club will be made of ice and that includes the seats, the walls, and even the glasses that the cocktails come in. Guests will be given parkas to ward off the temperature inside the place, which is kept at… you guessed it… minus 5 degrees. I thought people came to Vegas to escape the cold?

And finally, the Second Bon Voyage Award of the Week goes to me and fellow travel writer Mary Herczog who will be departing on our annual road trip entitled Plucky Survivors See America on August 27, 2008. You can follow along with us through our website PluckySurvivors.com as we travel more than 2,400 miles through the deep south including stops at a BBQ championship, the Salt and Pepper Shaker Museum, the Colonel Sanders Museum, and other roadside oddities. There will be no column the weeks of September 1 and September 8 while I’m away but you can get your Rick fix on PluckySurvivors.com.

10th Anniversary Special: Crystal Ball Gazing - Part I
By Rick Garman

Vegas4Visitors.com will celebrate its 10th Anniversary in September 2008! One of our readers, Tony, reminded me recently of a column I wrote way back in 2003. In it, I predicted what Las Vegas would look like in 2007. As a part of our ongoing 10th anniversary series I thought it would be fun to look back at what I thought the city would be like to see how close I was and in part 2 (below) I'll take a look out into the future again.

Here are the predictions from the August 2003 story as they were printed with a reality check for each one:

Prediction:
Wynn Las Vegas will be the big success story of the decade, a super-luxurious concept from Steve Wynn that surprised just about everyone for how much of a hit it was. After it’s opening in 2005 the crowds (and the cash) poured in to get a look at the first new mega-resort in years and Wynn quickly announced details of the second of three hotels that will ultimately occupy the former Desert Inn site. Construction is already underway on hotel number two with 2010 expected as an opening date.

Reality:
I was really close on this one. Wynn has been the most successful new casino hotel of the decade and before it even opened Steve Wynn had announced Encore, a second hotel to be built right next door. The only thing I got wrong was the timetable - instead of opening in 2010, Encore will open later this year.

Prediction:
The success of Wynn Las Vegas caused a tidal wave of development on the north end of The Strip. Three of the classic Vegas resorts that lined that end of Las Vegas Boulevard are long gone now with the implosions of the New Frontier, The Riviera, and The Stardust. Massive new mega-resorts are going up in their place along with new development on the former Wet n’ Wild and El Rancho sites. As many as five new hotels, including San Francisco and London themed resorts, are expected to open within the next two years, all within a mile of each other.

Reality:
I got a lot of this one right also. The Frontier and Stardust are gone and there are massive new resorts going up in their place (The Plaza and Echelon respectively). Ditto for the old El Rancho where Fontainebleau is under construction. But the Riviera soldiers on and despite many attempts to build something on the land, the Wet n Wild site still sits there rotting in the sun. And of course the city-based theme architecture craze faded long ago so all of the new hotels will be more generically styled.

Prediction:
Back in ’04, The Sahara got a big boost from the monorail that opened, linking it to the south end of The Strip. To remain competitive, The Sahara is undergoing a major remodeling and expansion hoping to capitalize on the increase in traffic expected as the monorail opens to Downtown Las Vegas this year.

Reality:
I got this one partially right but for totally incorrect reasons. The Sahara will undergo a massive makeover after a big ownership change but it has nothing to do with the monorail, which wasn't the boon it was expected to be for hotels like this. And the Downtown line for the monorail didn't happen and probably never will.

Prediction:
Circus-Circus is also upgrading their offerings, attempting to solidify their hold on the family market. But that’s not the only action happening from parent company Mandalay Resorts. The fourth hotel in the Mandalay Mile, a stretch of hotels including Excalibur, Luxor, and Mandalay Bay is expected to open next year. It is being constructed just south of Mandalay Bay and will be connected to all of its sister hotels by a guided tramway system.

Reality:
Circus-Circus hasn't gotten its extreme makeover yet but it should in the next few years. As far as the 4th hotel for the Mandalay Mile, all that fell into the dustbin of big ideas when Mandalay Resorts was purchased by MGM Mirage a few years ago.

Prediction:
Just across the street, work is progressing nicely on the first of two new hotels that are replacing the Tropicana, which they tore down in 2004. This new hotel, expected to open sometime this year, will be about the same size as the old Tropicana but when the second hotel opens in a couple of years the property will feature more than 4,000 rooms.

Reality:
Yeah, well. You can't win them all. The Tropicana is still there unchanged and plans to replace or remodel it have been put on hold indefinitely.

Prediction:
The last, and probably most significant, major development on The Strip is going on next door to Bellagio, where MGM Mirage is building another mega-resort on the land formerly occupied by the Boardwalk Hotel. The 55-acre site will feature a gigantic hotel/casino concept that will be designed to appeal to a younger, more hip crowd like those who usually go to places like Hard Rock and The Palms.

Reality:
Check this one in the correct column. The development is CityCenter, an $11 billion complex of hotels, entertainment, casino, shopping, and residential offerings. It's set to open in 2009 and will aim for a younger, more hip market.

10th Anniversary Special: Crystal Ball Gazing - Part II

Looking back into the crystal ball, here are a few predictions for what Las Vegas will look like in 2013. Before we begin I want to stress that these are just predictions based partially on things that have already been announced but mostly on rumor, conjecture, and speculation. In other words, this is just for fun and I don't know anything for sure so don't take it too seriously.

2008 and 2009 were rough years for Las Vegas due to the troubled US economy but the city bounced back like it always has and things are going like gangbusters up and down The Strip in 2013.

The Plaza hotel is the newest showplace on The Strip, opening this year. It's a dramatic homage to the famed New York hotel of the same name owned by an Israeli company that is already looking into what they'll do next. Word is they are eyeing one of the older hotels on The Strip for possible redevelopment.

The other mega-mega-resorts that opened in the last couple of years are also doing well. CityCenter has been around for 4 years now and it continues to draw big crowds to its gleaming glass and steel edifices. Echelon, the hotel complex that replaced the Stardust, opened later than expected but is making up for lost time in a big way.

Encore was such a hit for Wynn Las Vegas when it opened in late 2008 that the ribbon had barely been cut before owner Steve Wynn announced his next big project - a luxury non-gaming hotel that would anchor a massive new convention center. It is expected to open next year.

Several other big hotel-casinos opened on The Strip in the last couple of years and most did okay but there was that one rather public bankruptcy that shall go unmentioned. It was the biggest in Nevada history but the hotel in question has new owners now and all should be fine.

Construction projects currently underway include the replacement for The Riviera, which was torn down in 2010 and for The Tropicana, which bit the dust finally in 2011. The hotels that will go in their stead will be aimed more toward the middle income market, a crowd that has been steadily ignored over the last decade or so in Las Vegas. Alas, no “theme” hotels though. That trend never came back.

We're seeing a lot of cranes on the far North end of The Strip as the next big development from MGM Mirage gets underway across the street from The Sahara. It includes a makeover of Circus Circus, several new hotels wholly owned by the company, and a partnership on another big casino-hotel with the South African company that owns Paradise in the Bahamas.

And of course, the biggest venture on The Strip is the master plan for the Caesars Entertainment family of hotels including Caesars, Harrah's, Flamingo, Bally's, Paris, Rio, and Imperial Palace. The multi-billion plan saw the implosion of two of those hotels with two going up in their place and massive makeovers for a couple others. They will all be linked by a new people mover system. All of that started in earnest in 2011 and should be complete by 2015.

But the biggest shocker surrounds that hotel that closed in 2011 and was imploded in 2012. Who would've thought that a massive Las Vegas casino-hotel that opened in the early '90s would be gone so quickly?

I’ll see you in 2013 to see if any of this is right.

Diamond songs sung true.
Impersonator may even top the real thing for Vegas crowds.
By: Joe Brown/Las Vegas Sun

You come to Las Vegas and you want things your way, right? This is your time, and you’re spending money, and you’re gonna have it just how you want it.

You’ve seen it on TV, you know how it works around here, you know how to slip 10 bucks to the maitre d’ to get a good seat at the steakhouse.

And you want to see shows and you want to impress your lady or whomever you’re with.

But some of the shows are just too dang expensive. And some of the stars don’t want to sing their biggest hit anymore, they want to play songs from that new album that you’re probably never going to buy. And they’re older or fatter. And the only seats you can get are far, far away.

But in small showrooms all over the Strip, you find plenty of close-enough entertainers. They are willing to be who you want them to be. And they’re going to make eye contact, put on a show for you, sing all their hits, pose for a photo afterward. And, for an hour or 90 minutes, you want to believe.

Henderson couple so ‘cavelike’ they’ll be married on ‘Defending the Caveman’ stage.
By: Jerry Fink/Las Vegas Sun

The producers of “Defending the Caveman” held a nationwide search for the “most cavelike couple” and found the winners in Henderson.

Henderson City Councilman Jack Clark and his fiancee, Olga Binyons, will be married onstage at the Golden Nugget on Labor Day weekend.

“They had to profess their love in 50 words or less,” producer John Bentham says.

Clark and Binyons were actually second choice. The original winners couldn’t attend the ceremony, Bentham says, because one of them is in the military and deployed to Iraq.

The marriage will take place on the “Caveman” stage following the

3 p.m. performance Aug. 31. The couple’s prizes include two nights at the Nugget, a tuxedo, a wedding dress and tickets to the show for 100 friends.

One outrageous party coming to Vegas, direct from San Francisco.
By: Jerry Fink/Las Vegas Sun

It started as a lark, a way to raise money for a nudist presidential candidate.

Over the past 30 years, the Exotic Erotic Ball has became a San Francisco institution.

Now the organizer is bringing a version of the uninhibited party to the Orleans Arena on Labor Day weekend and calling it the Strippers & Hustlers Ball.

One wonders why it took so long to reach Las Vegas. It seems a natural fit — an outrageous party in a city that takes pride in outrageous parties.

Last Comic Standing joins “Jubilee!” on Sunday.
By: Joe Brown/Las Vegas Sun

Iliza Shlesinger, who just took the title of "Last Comic Standing" on the NBC reality competition, will join the cast of "Donn Arden’s Jubilee! " this Sunday through August 27.

She'll be doing standup rather than the showgirl thing.

The 25-year-old comedian — who has also won MySpace’s “So You Think You’re Funny” contest and the title of “MySpace Girl of the Week" on the G4 Network — became the first female comic — and the youngest — to win on "Last Comic Standing," which taped its finale last week at Paris Las Vegas. In this clip, she's performing during one of the "Last Comic" standup showdowns.

Lenny's Las Vegas: New Poker Promo.

Coast Casinos poker rooms are now hosting the Fortune Flop Texas Hold’em Progressive where the winner gets 40 percent of the jackpot starting at $50,000. Here’s how it works. Any player dealt a Flopped Royal Flush (any suit) while playing Texas Hold’em at any Coast Casino wins 40 percent of the progressive jackpot up to $100,000. All players playing Texas Hold’em at the time of the winning flop share in that jackpot as prize money is divided among all players at each of the four Coast Casinos.

Once the progressive jackpot reaches $100,000, winning hands are added weekly to increase the odds. To give you an example, one Las Vegas resident recently won $30,000 by flopping a royal flush at the Gold Coast. Each of the 180 people playing in a Coast Casino poker room at the time of the winning flop won $250.

You win some, you lose some by Mke Weatherford.

David Saxe, producer of "V — The Ultimate Variety Show," remembers watching ventriloquist Terry Fator's promotional video and opting not to offer him a job in the revue.

"I thought he was good, but I didn't think a guy with puppets represented the show," he says.

Ah well, you can't call 'em all. But Saxe is making reparations by hiring the first winner of "America's Got Talent," Bianca Ryan, to sing in "V" Monday through Aug. 31. The singer turns 14 the day after her engagement wraps, and so wasn't quite in the same position as second-season winner Fator to capitalize on her TV fame.

DOUG ELFMAN: Shlesinger grins as they bare it.

You can't see Iliza Shlesinger on NBC's "Last Comic Standing" anymore because she won the reality competition two weeks ago. But you still can see her anchoring a comic news show on TheStream.tv — in her underpants.

"I'm not out to be scandalous," Shlesinger says. "Originally the (online video) studio was hot. There were lights and everything. And so I was like, 'I'm wearing a blazer to look professional, but I don't need to wear pants.' "

Shlesinger will be all covered up on Sunday, though, when she starts doing eight- to 10-minute routines at "Jubilee!" at Bally's.

SHOW REVIEW: 'Bite'
Staying in Character: 'Bite' embraces its outrageous premise — fangs and all.

By MIKE WEATHERFORD/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

There's boring bad and there's brilliant bad. Even when you're talking topless vampires, as in "Bite," they couldn't shake their groove fangs all of four years without a spark of warped genius.

Here's one way to explain it. Some other topless vampire show might decide to include "Nessun Dorma." But has anyone ever had Puccini's famous aria lead right into "Stairway to Heaven"?

Not even Michael Bolton thought of that one.

This is what separates "Bite," and its creator/producer Tim Molyneux, from your standard-issue girlie shows. Since "Bite" debuted on Aug. 13, 2004, the Strip has become ever-more hifalutin, shoveling dirt over hoot fests such as "Splash." Even rival topless revues, such as "Fantasy" and Crazy Horse Paris, now strive to be artsy and ambitious.

Small casinos keep it simple, friendly.
Formula aimed at regulars paying off — even in downturn.
By: Liz Benston/Las Vegas Sun

With its mirrored ceiling, black acrylic walls and hot pink neon accent lighting, the Rainbow Club & Casino in downtown Henderson resembles a 1980s-era nightclub, only with modern slot machines.

Many of its gamblers, retirees with fixed incomes, remember the days when casinos, for the most part, were budget businesses.

The Rainbow’s only restaurant (“Our meals are deals!” the menu declares) offers $7.95 prime rib and a $7.75 porterhouse steak — prices abandoned long ago on the Strip.

The casino’s determination to cling to the past is paying off at a time when bigger and fancier casinos are hurting in the economic downturn. And it’s not the only one.

A few small casinos across the Las Vegas Valley say they have not experienced the downturn that has affected larger properties such as those of Station Casinos and Boyd Gaming Corp., which owns the Coast chain.

State licenses new team at Tropicana
By Cy Ryan/Las Vegas Sun

The Nevada Gaming Commission today approved the four-man team appointed to restore the fortunes of the bankrupt Tropicana hotel and casino in Las Vegas and its sister resorts.

Board member Arthur Marshall said the new management has “strong leadership” and a “chance to reassert itself.”

Scott Butera is now CEO of Tropicana Entertainment, replacing Bill Yung and his Columbia Sussex Corp. The goal of the team, Butera said, is to improve the performance of the Tropicana and 10 other casinos in New Jersey, Mississippi, Louisiana and Indiana.

“We want to get the right financing package in place,” he said Thursday.

High-Voltage Nightlife

With first-of-its-kind technology and generous amenities, Rok Vegas caters to a city that just wants to party.
By Jack Houston/Las Vegas Magazine

Just as Katy Perry kissed a girl and liked it, New York-New York finds itself experimenting with its first full-on nightclub – and the results are just as encouraging.

On Aug. 29, the hotel famed for its New York skyline façade and Manhattan streetscape interiors welcomes a taste of Miami with Rok Vegas, an offshoot of South Beach's popular Rokbar. Perry, whose hit "I Kissed a Girl" has topped the charts for seven weeks, hosts grand-opening festivities on Aug. 30.

From the giant illuminated equalizer outside the club to the lineup of top DJs spinning rock mashups inside, Rok oozes electricity. An already concert-like feel is enhanced by a 20-foot-high, 360-degree video screen that displays music videos, live club feeds, laser shows and original images of sexy females and city skylines, all courtesy of the club's resident VJ. The screen, which divides up into 14 separate screens or can remain one continuous whole, is the only one of its kind in a nightclub. You'll never see the video repeat, claims Ethan Asch, Rok's partner and general manager.

Adding to the South Beach vibe is plenty of room to dance; all of the banquettes have wooden ledges to encourage dancing, and there is a circular platform in the middle of the dance floor for those with more of an exhibitionist streak. Those who crave seating should be pleased by the wealth of VIP tables almost everywhere you turn. "Personally, I think the whole room is a VIP room," Asch said. "There's not really a bad seat in the house." A Stripfront patio offers clubgoers even more seating options, with a separate DJ and bar creating a second party under the stars.

Bottle service is par for the course, but Rok also offers reasonably priced half bottles so guests can mix and match Grey Goose with Bacardi or Jack Daniel's with Don Julio. (And anyone who's familiar with Jägermeister knows it's probably best in a half bottle anyway.) Guests who prefer not to be tethered to a table will find the bar isn't a bad place to hit, either.

"I think the energy we're going to create in this room is going to be unbelievable," Asch said. "We put together the energy that we created in Miami and added the video element to it, which is going to be like you've never seen before. There is no other club like it."

G-Rated Vegas
Where parents say kids can play.By Valery Pine Behr
Las Vegas Magazine

Once considered the ultimate adult playground, Las Vegas has also earned a reputation as a family-friendly destination. It all started back in the late 1960s, when Caesars Palace owner Jay Sarno opened a circus tent-shaped casino complete with midway games and carnival rides and named it Circus Circus. Almost half a century later, the city offers a much wider range of entertainment options for pint-size visitors.

Parents who want to stay on the Strip will have no trouble finding fun, with a few attractions an absolute must for every family's itinerary. One of the most popular is Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay, which offers visitors an opportunity to see – and even touch – a variety of sea creatures and exotic reptiles from all over the planet. Just down the street at The Mirage, Siegfried & Roy's Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat provides a lush, intimate setting where guests can enjoy the duo's collection of tigers, lions and dolphins. And if adrenaline-pumping excitement is what the kids want, the whole family can experience professional race kart driving at Pole Position Raceway.

Taking time away from the Strip offers visitors of all ages a unique view of Las Vegas. A few miles from the action is the new Springs Preserve, a 180-acre cultural and historic attraction set on the Valley's original water source. Another great adventure is an overnight excursion to Loews Lake Las Vegas Resort. The kid-friendly, Mediterranean-themed property overlooks a 320-acre private lake and features a huge family pool with a waterslide, white sand beach and lots of kid activities (including day camp for parents who want some free time). And a visit to Southern Nevada would not be complete without a day trip to Hoover Dam. Considered an engineering marvel of the 20th century, it allows parents the chance to add educational value while visiting the Entertainment Capital of the World.

Pole Position Raceway When you sit down at a machine inside the 60,000-square-foot indoor racing arena, fate is in your own hands. The machine, an all-electric, emissions-free racing kart produced in Italy, is among the fastest in the nation and tops out at 45 mph. Any bumps or skids just slow you down. Put on a head sock and a helmet, and you're assigned a shiny red kart. Buckle up.

Siegfried & Roy's Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat One popular spot for animal lovers is Siegfried and Roy's Secret Garden, which features some of the duo's favorite big cats in an intimate tropical setting. Guests can wander through the habitat and see snow leopards, lions and panthers enjoying their leisurely lives. Part of the MGM Mirage Education Program, the venue's main purpose is to provide an educational experience for students, teachers and visitors.

Springs Preserve While parents enjoy the natural environs, kids will love the Origen Experience, chock full of interactive elements about the desert environment. They can view a cartoon on the water cycle, peer through night goggles to watch wildlife or even get "caught" in a flash flood. While they'll want to stay in the building all day, you can coax them outside by promising plenty of snakes, spiders and other desert fauna in the habitat area.

Shark Reef The amazing aquarium offers visitors a chance to get up close to predators, multiple species of fish and beautiful reptiles – all in a safe and secure environment. Two hard-to-miss areas are the touch pool and the jellyfish tank. The touch pool allows visitors to run their fingers over the smooth bodies of swimming stingrays and the jellyfish tank is truly mesmerizing.

Loews Lake Las Vegas Just a half hour from the Strip, Loews Lake Las Vegas offers a respite from the adult-oriented city. Besides the lending libraries of games and recreational activities found at most Loews resorts, the hotel also features a kids' concierge; SushiSKool, where kids learn about raw fish from chef Osamu "Fuji" Fujita; a "dive-in" theater at the pool; and storytime on Saturdays, complete with milk and cookies. Oh, and did we mention the 320-acre lake upon which the resort is located?

Hoover Dam Enjoy breathtaking views of Lake Mead and the Colorado River while visiting the highest concrete dam in the Western Hemisphere. Located just 20 minutes off the Las Vegas Strip, Hoover Dam is also one of the country's largest hydroelectric power facilities, producing 4 billion kilowatts of electricity a year. An awe-inspiring sight to see, Hoover Dam is a testament to human ingenuity.

Nathan Burton: ‘Comedy Magic’ and a guide to Vegas
By Nathan Burton
From: Robin Leachs' Vegas Lux Life

I’m your guest columnist for the day — Nathan Burton. I’m a comedy magician with the show “Nathan Burton Comedy Magic” playing daily at 4 p.m. at the world-famous Flamingo Las Vegas. I’m honored to be writing this column and I’m happy to report that I have my own piece of celebrity gossip to share. On Saturday, Aug. 3, Michael Jackson and his three children, Paris, Blanket and Prince, came to see my show, which Robin reported to his Luxe Life readers the day it happened. Still, I would like to say what a great honor it was to have him there. It was crazy to be performing and look out in the audience and see Michael in his disguise applauding and enjoying the show. I spoke to him afterwards and he and his children were very nice. It’s a great day when Michael Jackson compliments you and calls you "Mr. Burton."

My show, "Nathan Burton Comedy Magic," has been open at the Flamingo since April 2008. Before then, the show was at the V Theater inside the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood. I am honored to have a show inside the legendary Flamingo showroom, where one of my idols, Wayne Newton, performed for years. I have worked to become a professional magician since I was 5 years old and now that dream is a reality. One of my most exciting accomplishments is my big face up on the front of the Flamingo. It’s crazy to look up and see yourself 20 stories high! My sister, Emily, who works as my production manager, says that she gets scared every time she drives down Interstate 15 and looks over to see my giant head floating on the Flamingo. You'd think she would be used to it since she drives a car with my face all over it. In fact, my mother, Nancy Burton, who works for the show as well, drives a wrapped “Nathan Burton Comedy Magic” car. Having my sister and mother drive cars wrapped with the show logo is a great way to get free publicity all over town. Plus, everyone can tell where Nancy and Emily are at all times.

Show Review: Dirk Arthur by Norm Johnson

An old friend (he's not old, it's just that we have known each other for quite a long time) of this writer, Dirk Arthur, has an afternoon show at the Tropicana Hotel / Casino, "Xtreme Magic," which was a perfect venue for Nancy's grandkids. So, that's where we ended up last Sunday afternoon (we went to the 2 p.m. show). Arthur has the only magic show on the Strip featuring exotic cats, and are they beautiful.

The one-hour show features four dancer / assistants that are truly great looking and can actually dance! The show moves quickly from one illusion to another and are nicely performed by Dirk and his assistants. In one illusion, he takes an empty stage with one prop and before you can blink an eye, a helicopter appears from behind a curtain. One of the unbelievable illusions is when Dirk gets locked into a steel contraption with a huge drill bit hovering over his body. Within minutes, the drill comes down and supposedly goes right through him. Again, before you can blink an eye, he is standing in the audience, alive and yelling at the audience. It's a good one!

But, what the kids and audience really want to see are those beautiful cats Arthur uses in the show. Not only are they fantastic specimens of the cat family, but they are huge animals.

Dirk maintains his cats on a large estate and shows a film of their living conditions, which is truly amazing. The biggest cat is an orange Bengal tiger that is truly magnificent. He is raising a Liger (half tiger, half lion which is the only one in the United States) along with a baby African spotted leopard, and two of only 15 Snow tigers still in existence in the world.

One of the close-up illusions Arthur performs is when he makes a cone out of a Dirk Arthur poster, and amazingly, a group of white doves appear from inside the cone, followed by a large white goose.

This is definitely a show for the entire family and well worth the price of a ticket. Show times for Xtreme Magic starring Dirk Arthur are 2 and 4 p.m. daily except Friday. Tickets range between $22.00 and $27.50. For reservations call the Tropicana box office at 1-800-829-9034.

Plaza work delayed until '09
From: The Las Vegas Review Journal

Plans to build the Las Vegas version of New York's Plaza Hotel have been postponed, a spokesman for the project's owners told The Wall Street Journal.

The $5 billion Plaza hotel-casino development was scheduled to break ground by the end of 2008 on the site of the former New Frontier, for which the developers paid $35 million an acre, a record for Strip land. It was to open in 2011.

The project's groundbreaking has been moved to "sometime in 2009," said Michelle Tsang, spokeswoman for Elad IDB Las Vegas LLC, a partnership between the Elad Group — owners of New York's Plaza Hotel — and IDB Group of Israel.

The Plaza partners also have deferred payment of a $625 million loan used to buy the project site, Tsang said. Elad IDB paid a premium price of $1.25 billion for 35 acres at the height of a land-buying frenzy on the Strip last year.

Tsang said the owners plan to go forward with the project.

"They're definitely committed to building. Everything is still going ahead as planned; they're just not doing it in 2008," Tsang said.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: How much Cirque is too much for Vegas?

Fueled by money from Dubai, Cirque du Soleil is ready to soar around the world.

But its wings still could be clipped at Mandalay Bay.

Two weeks ago, Las Vegas' dominant entertainment player sold one-fifth of the company to affiliates of Dubai World, the Persian Gulf state holding company that also has a half-stake in MGM Mirage's CityCenter.

The Dubai money should aid the "acceleration of our development," Cirque's president, Daniel Lamarre, noted. Working with the developers on a Cirque production set for Dubai in 2011, "I've learned to trust them, and I was really impressed by the speed (with) which they're developing their organization."

DOUG ELFMAN: Dreams and fantasy leave nothing taboo.

It was a Playboy party, and like all Playboy parties, women wore see-through lingerie. They tiptoed in high-heeled sandals, making their thighs and things jolt like pistons of flesh everywhere you looked.

This party at the Palms pool on Saturday night was a Renaissance costume affair. So it was that 13 men in priest costumes paid $7,000 to rent a cabana, to stand out and get these women's attention.

"Do you know where we can find little boys?" one of the "priests" asked, staying in character, then he motioned toward a bar of cocktails in his cabana. "The confessional is this way.

"If this party was a confessional, the confession was that people take joy in shedding reality for fantasy. Whoever they are at 10 a.m. on Monday is not the person they want to be when given the chance.

It's finally here!  The show that MGM / Mirage brass tried to stop!  The show created by me, Michael Politz in my first stent as an Executive Producer.

A variety of sexy young people “confess” their wildest stories inside V.I.P. suites at the hottest nightclubs in Las Vegas to host Super Model Cindy Taylor. You may remember Cindy as the co-host to Art Mann on Wild On E!.  In this series it's “what happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay in Vegas.” Preview the first two episodes at a special day and time of Friday, August 22nd, at 9:30 PM ET on HDNet. Then, look for Vegas Confessions at its regular time of 8 PM ET on Thursdays, starting in September.

I smell EMMY!!!

Monti-licious from The Vegas Eye

The week started out with an evening at Palms Place where well known producer of Crazy Girls and La Cage at the Riviera, Mr. Norbert Aleman, previewed his latest creation. Las Vegas Crazy Girls Under Cover is a movie produced by Norbert and scheduled for pay for view television. It's kind of Norbert's version of Charlie's Angels. A sidebar note regarding yours truly, Monti Rock III, and Norbert. When I first arrived in Las Vegas Norbert and Steve Sciricca embraced me with open arms. Steve actually wanted to build a room at the Riviera for me but alas, I had other plans to become Cindy Adams on steroids. Wonder if it's too late to reconsider?

Jennifer Holiday will be appearing with George Wallace, the Mr. Las Vegas of the moment, at the Flamingo Aug 19th-Aug26th. Many of you will remember Jennifer for her performance in the original stage production of Dream Girls on Broadway. I'm excited to see Jennifer and of course George Wallace has become one of our favorite funny men. The Flamingo seems to have a lot going on with George Wallace as a regular, now he'll be joined by Jennifer Holiday, even if it's just a short time and finally Donny and Marie Osmond's tickets are on sale for their Flamingo appearances starting September 9. The Flamingo Cabaret is bringing in comedian Vinnie Favorito from his long time gig at O'Sheas. Vinnie, another of the "insult" comics ( along with Bobby Slayton) ,is one of the funniest comedians around.

Right now the biggest selling show is Cher at the Colosseum. And talk about timing, last week was the Cher Convention at Caesers Palace. Some of these Cher" look a likes" have been doing this for as much 27 years.Cher has yet to appear at one of these Conventions, but she does donate to thier charities.

The success of the Thursday night salsa dances at The South Point has resulted in the addition of Sunday afternoon sessions beginning Sept 21. It reminds one of Basin Street East in NYC whre Sunday afternoon dancing became THE thing to do. The Michito Sanchez band featuring percussionist Johhny (Dandy) Rodriguez provides the best in salsa dance music.

Seems like Palms Place is getting some free advertising from Hulk Hogan and his soon to be ex Linda. Linda wants to sell, at a profit no doubt, the four million dollar condo they were going to enjoy at Palm Place.

Raw Talent, the new show from The Havana Nights production crew is finally set to open at The Sahara on Sept 12. Let's hope all of the alleged backstage problems are behind them.

Laurence Fishburne To Join CSI:Las Vegas Cast.
From:www.vegastripping.com

Set your TiVos! Oscar nominated actor Laurence Fishburne has been tapped to join the cast of CSI : Las Vegas for the upcoming season. No, he won't be playing a sci-fi anti-hero, a tightly wound dad in the hood or a drug addled wife beating rock star.

Fishburne is no stranger to Vegas related roles, he recently portrayed casino security expert Cole Williams in the MIT Blackjack team pic 21, which wasn't nearly as good as the book it was based on even if Kate Bosworth lit up the screen.

Vegas Luxe Life by Robin Leach

Fabulous foods, wondrous wines make Vegas the world's fine dining leader.
“Champagne wishes and caviar dreams” are always true when they involve fabulous food and wondrous wines in the new Las Vegas — which has become the world’s new No. 1 dining destination. Now it's getting even more elaborate and expensive because the star chefs have literally turned the Vegas dining scene into a literal theater and nightclub experience.

The yellow pages listing under restaurants looks like the secret phone directory at the Food Network! Everybody from Wolfgang Puck to Guy Savoy, Joel Robuchon, Thomas Keller, Charlie Palmer, Michael Mina and Emeril LaGasse has extraordinary palaces of pleasure in this desert dining kingdom.

There are three specific trends developing here that will revolutionize the worldwide dining scene but also keep Vegas at the top:

* Restaurateurs have decided they don’t want their customers to leave! So when dinner is over with, it's simply time to drink and dance in the club lounge that’s now part of the scene.

* Damn the expense! Rare wines and pricey taste treats are reaching into the stratospheric level — and still the customers say "charge it" without batting an eye!

* No longer is it just food on a plate. Now it's biodynamic produce, organics and even molecular gastronomy. Vegas is truly in the forefront of the new “science of cooking."

There are two brand new restaurants in the just-opened Palazzo resort casino alongside The Venetian that have combined club-lounges right under the same roof. Sushi Samba from New York, Chicago and Miami is the largest of all, combining Japanese and South American fusions with both a chill lounge for mojitas and a nightclub for champagne. In Dos Caminos — the world’s largest Mod-Mex cucina with 750 seats — the guacamole and lobster is prepared right at your table. Forget tacos and a salsa dip — this cuisine rivals any French three-star kitchen king!

For drinking, dining and dancing without even moving, there’s the giant 55,000 square foot Asian-themed, three-story Tao complex in the Venetian, and the bordello-styled Cathouse in the Luxor with Iron Chef winner Kerry Simon and his lingerie-clad waitresses. Kerry also has the hottest new dayclub dining scene at the Palms with three different dining experiences in one restaurant, located in the center of the new Palms Place sixth floor. Italian superchef Steve Martorano says you can simply do whatever you want at his Rio resort café — and that includes dancing on top the tables if you wish! Pasta and towers of eggplant and mozzarella are just intermezzos between the disco sounds of Lou Rawls and Barry White!

But the new Charlie Trotter restaurant and bar at the Palazzo provides three absolute ultimate areas of eating: A chefs table perched high above the kitchen so dinner guests can watch the orchestra of kitchen sous-staff perform a symphony of skills below; a sushi-styled bar where you can choose seven- or 14-course nibbles from a 75-item list and a walk-through open wine cellar into the main dining room where the emphasis is on the freshest of fish and unique heirloom vegetables without butter or cream in the prep.

Money is no object in the land of wretched excess: who’s got the most expensive hamburger in town? At Daniel Boulud in the Wynn Las Vegas, it once started at $50, but Hubert Keller sells one with a fine bottle of Petrus for $600, and at the Paris resort casino Le Burger Brasserie gets $777 for its burger made from Kobe Beef and Maine Lobster with a 100-year aged Balsamico. Want lobster? How about $300-plus at The Palm in Caesars Palace. Want artichoke soup? How about $68 a bowl with black truffles at Guy Savoy upstairs. Guy has often served up a 10-ounce serving of caviar with it that costs $2,300! The best wine list in town is at Charlie Palmert’s Aureole at Mandalay Bay, where a "flying angel" will hunt through the three-story wine tower for a 1900 magnum of Chateau Petrus that will just add $45,000 to your bill! Dinner for a party of 12 at Joel Robuchon in MGM was a mere $20,000 tab! The baked potato which holds Beluga caviar atop a poached egg is just $235! Don’t complain — just remember that here, a restaurateur will gamble up to $25 million to create a new hotspot!

With so many celebrity super chefs in residence, no wonder you hit the jackpot at dinner these days rather than in the casino! Wolfgang Puck isn’t satisfied with six winners — he’s just opened a branch of his Beverly Hills CUT steak restaurant here, too! Emeril LaGasse has kicked it up a notch with his new Table 10, joining his Delmonico’s Steak House and New Orleans Fishhouse hot properties. Beloved Food Network star Mario Batali has opened a stunning steakhouse, Carnevino in the Palazzo, and an Enoteca winebar and cold-cuts brasserie in the Venetian. All are new concepts with new approaches to food with unexpected and unseen menu items.

My favorite trendsetter though is the ambitious Martin Heirling, who runs the sensational Sensi restaurant at the Bellagio and has been picked to lead the new food and beverage services at the monstrous MGM CityCenter's 10,600 all-suite four-unit hotel and condo tower compound. Martin uses four separate kitchens to produce different tastes on one plate — including bread from a clay Tandoori oven! He promoted ‘haute cuisine’ in an informal setting of casual fine dining. He wants more and more restaurants to “eat locally” instead of flying in ingredients from around the world — except for spices. But his firm vote is for biodynamic produce and wines. “This is a continuation and evolution of the natural and organic approach of past years. It's more serious and reflects a philosophy of growing and harvesting according to nature’s law,” says Martin. “This in itself is then reflected in better quality produce with both vegetables and vines.”

Vegas today is not just about amazing food and service. It's about presentation and clean cooking. If you’re visiting, don’t hesitate to ask the chef to let you into the kitchen and they will happily share their secrets and beliefs of the new Vegas — the one they believe leads the world with innovations. The ultimate battle is underway — and the guest always wins!

Terry Fator: Following in the footsteps of history:
Standing backstage waiting for my very first headline show in Vegas at the Las Vegas Hilton I felt the excitement mounting and heard the crowd tittering eagerly, excited about the show starting. ?I walked out on stage and did what I had done thousands of times before at every type of venue imaginable for small crowds — of as little as one person — to huge crowds of as many as 100,000, but something about being on stage in the one and only Las Vegas was different.

The energy felt different somehow. It is very hard to explain, but it is just dissimilar.? Maybe it’s the sense of history. The fact that almost every legendary performer of the past century in every genre of entertainment has graced the stages of this amazing city — from the Rat Pack to Dean and Jerry to Elvis — might have something to do with my feeling of awe every time I step on stage here.

Even though I had performed in Vegas many times since that first evening in October 2007, I still get that same feeling of wonder I experienced that night every single time I step out on stage. ?I can’t help but reflect on the history of the place. ?During the days of Vaudeville, the greatest accomplishment of those on that circuit was playing Carnegie Hall, a worthy goal to say the least. But something had changed during the decades following the heyday of those performers, and being a headliner in Las Vegas became the new dream of the entertainment world.

I had been caught in that dream since I was about 14 years old when I saw a television show that had a marquee with Frank Sinatra’s name shining above the Strip, announcing to the world that he had arrived. From that moment I began to dream of the day when I would be able to accomplish the same thing.

I had no idea at that age just what kind of an impact Sinatra had on the entertainment world, but my goal was never to be as important as he — only to have my name over the bright lights of Vegas like him, proclaiming my entrance into the big time.

Any entertainer has one goal, and that is to bring their craft to as many people as possible, some through the film world, longing to be on the silver screen and hobnobbing with the brightest stars of Hollywood in Beverly Hills.? Others want to be recording artists, bringing their music into the lives of millions through the magic of radio and other sources of distribution.

They dream of playing huge venues with tens of thousands of screaming fans egging them on.? While I have had the occasional flirtations with those forms of the entertainment field throughout my career, I never lost that burning desire to see my name in the bright lights of Las Vegas. No matter what I accomplished in my life as a performer I could never shake that feeling that this was where I belonged.

I would visualize myself here, closing my eyes and dreaming of what it must be like to fly into Vegas and see myself on a billboard, then to drive up to the casino I would be playing and see myself on its marquee. For decades it felt like a pipe dream. When you dedicate yourself to a goal and work toward it for more than 20 years it can certainly seem like it will never happen.

I never gave it all up, though.

I spent the next several years polishing my act, working as hard as I could to be the best, always seeing that final goal in my mind. I might have been performing for a room full of first-graders or 20 people at a fair on a stage near the midway trying to be heard over the noise of the rides and arcade games, but I treated every show as one more step to my ultimate objective of being a Las Vegas headliner. ?During my many trips to Vegas throughout those long years of dreaming I would stare for minutes at billboards announcing the headliners all over the city, all the while continuing aching for it to be me.

My wife and I would vacation here a couple of times a year and would walk the Strip, going from casino to casino, eating the fine food and seeing the shows that have made this city famous. Of course, there was also the occasional bet. It wouldn’t be Vegas without that, now, would it?

But at the end of our vacations I had to pack it all up and move on, performing at the small venues, honing my craft and continuing to long for my Vegas debut.

A few years ago I began to have thoughts like “Well, I guess that kind of thing happens to other people, not the Terry Fators of the world.” ?Wonderfully, I couldn’t have been more wrong about that. Through my hard work and dedication, as well as never giving up that dream, I have accomplished my goal of being right here as a major headliner in the greatest entertainment city on Earth.

After all the shows I have done here as a headliner, I still get that wonderful feeling of awe every time I step out on that stage. I’ll continue to do it three days a month through the rest of 2008 at the Las Vegas Hilton, and in February 2009 I’ll be doing it five times a week for five, possibly 10, years as the new headliner for the Mirage.

But regardless of how many shows I do in Vegas it just feels different here for some reason. I know that in some respects the shows I do here are just like any others, but it feels so much more special, at least to me. ?I hope I never lose that feeling!
